An architectural masterpiece
Nestled in the hills above the Marbella coastline there is a residence whose sophisticated, one-of-a-kind architectural styling, art and features mark it out as the outstanding contemporary property in this part of the Mediterranean.
One of a kind A property without equal in Marbella, El Nido brings a new level of architectural refinement to a setting known for its climate and glamorous lifestyle. El Nido belongs to an international category of homes found from a collection in top exquisite locations around the world, a home of art and design styled by a renowned architect with the likes of Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Cristiano Ronaldo among his clients. A specialist in designing sumptuous villas, Joaquín Torres was commissioned by the owners to create an outstanding family home of exquisite style, comfort and sophistication inspired by a love of architecture and art.
They could have opted for architects like Zaha Hadid or Norman Foster, but instead chose Joaquín Torres, seduced by his proposal for a villa whose interplay of lines, space and light places it in the top league of modern international homes. In commissioning a Spanish architect for their Marbella home the discerning and highly knowledgeable owners of this magnificent property neither played it safe nor compromised on style, comfort or execution. “We had a vision for this home and Joaquín brought it to life for us,” says Lisa, the inspiring force behind the realisation of the project.
In a different class El Nido is the product of a labour of love, built for sophisticated owners who wished to create a truly special home that stands out for its style, quality and the exceptional living environment it offers. “We wanted a contemporary villa that is also a true home, not cold and abstract.” The 10.000 m2 of Travertine style marble bought as a single block from a quarry near Alicante is the first step in this process, as it dresses the villa in light tones that provide the building blocks for an architectural vernacular that plays with horizontal layers, given an added dimension by converging and diverging lines. Where many contemporary designs offer the predictable geometry of right angles, El Nido is a study in subtle stylistic detail that has both
form and function. Glass windows provide privacy whilst supporting cleverly layered architecture in which the cantilevered roofline that extends over part of the terrace area is a recurring feature differently interpreted in the kitchen’s central island and the study’s magnificent working space. Skilful design means that every room in the villa is fed by natural light, offers a unique, intimate ambience and forms part of a home whose different spaces flow together through visual communication.
The cantilever design and a language of diverging lines create a mesmerizing architectural effect

Free-flowing interior and outdoor living spaces that blend clean lines with architectural detail
Exceptional living spaces At El Nido, style and design become visible elements as soon as the imposing steel gate glides open to reveal an approach to the house that especially in the evening will take your breath away. It immediately becomes evident that this is a home of refined form and concept. As you follow the entranceway to the sound of trickling water features soothing the senses, the eye catches more and more of the ingenious detail that is woven into the linear exterior of this magnificent villa.
At the heart of the living space is The Pulse, a 15-metre high steel structure that can be enjoyed from many different vantage points in the home, including the magnificent world class spa that offers a private hair salon, dressing areas, a gym, sauna, steam room and a wet bar bordering the 17-metre heated swimming pool and large Jacuzzi. The art in the salon similarly catches your eye as you flow on into an ambient formal dining room with bespoke furniture designed and made to measure by the architect.
As in many different parts of the villa, the sheer beauty of the architectural styling is further enhanced through tasteful décor and artwork, here in the form of an ‘urban forest’ artwork by Rafael Llamazares, whose outlines complement a section of the home that encompasses two large private guest suites with independent entrance and an imposing study with double-height ceiling. On the upper floor are three spacious bedroom suites, as well as the master suite with his and her dressing rooms, a panoramic terrace and a private study.
It looks out upon a softly backlit modern wine cellar that is also connected to the clean, elegant functionality of the Poggenpohl kitchen whose lighting by Tom Dixon adds a perfect finishing note. Venture on into a comfortable family room with the latest cinema equipment or step onto a terrace with inviting fireplace that leads out onto a magnificent outdoor area in which even the swimming pool, ATP standard tennis court and professional outdoor kitchen and dining area are sumptuously stylish.
Though it features an exceptional standard of materials used and high-tech features – such as a vertically opening lift sliding door and outdoor high definition TV screen that disappears at the touch of button – it is above all the architectural aesthetic and sophistication of El Nido that ensures there is no other property in its class in Marbella.

Cascada de Camoján Select and private, Cascada de Camoján is one of the finest and most sought after addresses in Marbella. Close to all amenities yet peaceful and secure. The most exclusive part of the luxurious gated residential area of Sierra Blanca, Cascada de Camoján backs on to a protected natural area at the base of Marbella’s enigmatic La Concha Mountain. The verdant beauty of this domain is matched by the magnificent views over the coastal area and the Mediterranean Sea enjoyed from here. Yet in spite of a setting so close to nature with the commanding vistas afforded by an elevated position, Cascada de Camoján also finds itself just minutes away from the best that Marbella has to offer.
This includes not just the town itself, with its fine dining, shopping and professional services, but also the marina of Puerto Banús, the finest choice of golf courses in Europe, glamorous beach clubs, luxuriant spa resorts, racquet clubs and the lively social scene of a highly cosmopolitan town. Private clinics and first class international colleges add to the range of amenities in a vibrant coastal area little more than two hours from historic cities, ski slopes and a surfer’s paradise called Tarifa – all of it only three hours from Europe’s main capitals.
Arne Quinze The work of controversial Belgian artist Arne Quinze features in prominent locations around the world – from the Statue of Liberty in New York to Rebirth in Paris and Sculptures at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
His bold forms and complex installations evoke the drama and intensity of modern urban life, their textural solidity offering an antidote to its fast-paced, fleeting nature. To own one of his pieces is to create a private zone where you can contemplate the sinuous metal branches that reach up to the heavens with a simple but highly effective single colour tonality. Among his appreciative clients are the owners of El Nido, who were moved by his concept for a sculpture that would form the beating heart around
which the house would be designed, built and come to life as a home. The imposing, one-of-a-kind 15-metre steel structure now takes pride of place in the central communicating courtyard of this imposing modern villa. At night a choice of lighting projections add another dimension, allowing you to use the steel structure as a palette to suit your mood. The Pulse is the finishing touch to an architectural gem and an integral part of the philosophy that built it, yet it may one day very well be worth more than El Nido itself.
JoaquĂn Torres From his base in Madrid, JoaquĂn Torres is the creative spirit behind the A-Cero studio that has created many of the most important luxury villas in Spain and beyond. The architect is known for a style that can be called Modern Mediterranean, and one that is ideally suited to a setting such as Marbella. Given his personality and drive, each project has to surpass the previous one, resulting in a quest for the idealised blend of form and function. A master of geometry, he begins the process by manipulating space at will to conjure up a series of interior and exterior settings that are aesthetically arresting, sophisticated and yet also intimate and comfortable. Such spaces form a continuum that interacts at will, seamlessly flowing into one another and visually connected in a way that integrates even the largest property and makes it one, living organism
that you would just love to call home. In this way kitchens, terraces, spas, studies and even garages are brought into the whole. At El Nido the architecture strikes you as soon as you set eyes upon it; the interplay of converging and diverging lines offering a variety of detail that is engaging yet never superfluous. Modern yet solid, this is a stunning architectural villa that incorporates the latest technologies and luxuries, but above all sets a new standard in the foothills of Marbella. We believe JoaquĂn Torres has outdone himself once again.
