The History Of

The New Liberty Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church

The Liberty Hill AME Church began 150 years ago. The first worshipers were Brothers Washington Dozier, Jacob Hardin, Elijah Winfrey and their wives. These brothers and sisters worshiped in a brush harbor down by the cemetery sprint. Through trials and tribulations, this group of Christians kept praying together and fighting for the cause. A white man, seeing their eagerness to build their church, gave them a piece of land on a hill and told them that they were “at Liberty Hill”. Although the hills were hard to climb, the members kept moving until the Lord heard their cries and answered their prayers. The church was built except for the roof. The minister at that time was Rev. J.R. Mosely, who mortgaged his horse and buggy to complete the church by putting it on the roof.

In 1964, the church was destroyed by fire.Under the leadership of Rev. W. S. Wren, and the help of GOD, and the insurance policy of $500.00 and a loan of $3,500.00 and the contributions from our devoted church members and the McDuffie County community, we made plans to rebuild. In April of 1965, Mr. J. L. Harris along with the McDuffie Board of Education made it possible for services to be held at the Pine Street Elementary School. Several months later, The Rev. T. B. Blandingburg loaned the church a tent, which was placed on the building site where worship service was held for five months. On November 28, 1966, the congregation marched in the new church singing, “When the Saints go marching in”. Under the leadership of Rev. W. T. Hicks, a vestibule was built, bathrooms installed, a piano purchased, gas heat added, a well pump installed, sheetrock added, and a pew painted. Rev. Hicks was called from his labor on February 21, 1970, and Rev. J. Baker served for five months. During that year, the debt was paid off, senior choir organized, and hymnbooks were purchased. Rev. W. B. Smith organized the Young People’s Division, Senior Citizen Host and Hospitality, Pulpit Aid, Lay Organization and Christian Aid. During the tenure of Rev. B. J. Jones, the church was paneled, two light fixtures installed, hardwood floors and carpet, church furniture and baptismal bowl purchased ($9,800). The members of the Stewart and Trustee Boards were Foster Wilson, Grady Jones, Joe Champion, Leroy Wilson, John Jones, Otis Kendrick, Willie Jackson, William Kendrick, Doris Hamilton, Simon Harris, and Jessie Champion. On August 9, 1977, Rev. B. J. Jones was called from service. An educational unit was added under Rev. U. S. Barber tenure, it housed the pastor’s study, women lounge, kitchen and furnishings. A day care center was organized. Stewards and Trustees were Foster Wilson, Grady Jones, Joe Champion, Leroy Wilson, Otis Kendrick, Willie Jackson, Norsie Martin Sr., William Kendrick, Doris Hamilton, and Jessie Champion.

8

Under the leadership of Rev. I. O. Sears, the church grew spiritually and economically. The Steward and Trustee Board members were John Jones, Norsie Martin Sr., William Kendrick, Willie Jackson, Otis Kendrick, Leroy Wilson, Doris Hamilton, and Jessie Champion. Under the leadership of Rev. Harry L. Dawkins, the church again grew spiritually and economically. The Day Care Board and center fell under the leadership and direction of the pastor and members, air conditioning was installed, ceiling and the church incorporated. The Steward and Trustee Board were H. Blandingburg, J. Jones, W. Smith, S. Blandingburg, M. Jones, F. Jones, and C. D’Antignac, P. Paschal, N. Martin, W. Jackson, A. Scott, and W. Kendrick. Under Rev. Lawrence Williams, a new roof, central air and heat were added. Under the leadership of Rev. Minnie P. Davis, new carpet was installed, sheetrock and paneling were installed as well as a PA system purchased. The Steward and Trustee members were W. Smith, L. Wilson, J. Jones, D. Martin, C. D’Antignac, L. D. Scott, M. Jones, G. Durham, P. Paschal, N. Martin, F. Jones, W. Kendrick, M. Boyd and R. Wilburn. Under the leadership of Rev. William A. Hopkins, the church was painted, work done on the inside, the yard was landscaped, a porch and walkway were added by the Usher Board. New air conditioners were installed, the storage building was repaired, a bus purchased, new annex flooring was installed, computer equipment was purchased, a communion set, and an aqua lighter was purchased. In the year 2000, under the leadership of Rev. Hopkins, the Steward and Trustee Board members were: D. Martin, C, D’Antignac, L. D. Scott, J. Jones, G. Durham, W. Kendrick, L. Kendrick, P. Paschal, C. Cummings, F. Jones, Norsie Martin Jr., H. Battle, M. Champion, F. Few, and K. Harris.

Under the leadership of Dr. Bobbie J. Kendrix, the church name was changed to the “New” Liberty Hill AME Church. She and her spouse (B. Kendrix) came to us in June of 2002 and were a blessing. We were Spirit filled and Holy Ghost touched. This woman of God preached under the anointing. Under her, many souls were saved and delivered. During her tenure, we purchased a sound system and a copier, paid off furniture note, purchased a fifteen-passenger van and a vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately, in 2003, a fire destroyed the kitchen in the church. In 2008, the Annex of the church was completed, and we held our worship celebrations in the fellowship hall. We are greatly appreciative to Bishop William P. DeVeaux and the Sixth Episcopal District. To our Presiding Elder, to our dearest patrons, Rev. Walter Moon and Bro. Larry Daniels for their continuous hard work, we thank you. As we thank these people from the bottom of our hearts and may God keep his loving arms around you and his spirit in you. Having completed her task, she has moved on to a greater calling. June 2009, the Lord sent us our Presiding Elder Ella Mae Samuels as our Pastor to lead us. Under her leadership, many tasks were completed. A fresh anointing is in our church, and we see growth of our new believers, because when the Holy Spirit works, there is movement, excitement, and growth. She came with a vision, a plan designed by God, to unify our church and bring back the spiritually broken and financially wounded. 1st Timothy 5:17 says, “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.” As every round go higher and higher, we truly give GOD praise and keep pressing on! The Reverend Michele C. Williams became the pastor of New Liberty Hill in April 2010. Her wisdom and spiritual being were immediately evident as we witness her yield to God’s will and work in her life. Her first act of obedience was to organize and facilitate an outstanding women’s conference/retreat entitled The Power of a Praying Woman. Rev. Williams’ vision for our congregation is limitless and she believes obtainable―she helped us to realize that with God all things are possible. 10

Nothing is done in her life or in God’s church, first, without prayer. We are blessed to have such a talented woman of God who teaches and preaches the Word of God with revelation and clarity. She embodies the essence of a servant leader. Eyes have not seen, nor ears heard what God has in store for the people of New Liberty Hill through the leadership of Rev. Williams. She kept “HOLDING ON TO GOD’S GOOD NEWS”. She improved the impossible for New Liberty Hill through prayer and her works, a job very well done. Rev. Williams moved on in April 2011 shining her light so that others may see the reflection of Christ through her. Rev. Nathaniel Kendrick, Evangelist Robyn Kendrick and family came to us in May 2011. He came with his vision to lead his sheep to another level and to serve this church as its leader, preacher, and teacher. The hills were hard to climb, but there is still a faithful community in the church and in our society. Mr. Robert Knox and First United Methodist, many Christians friends, family, and other blessed us with acts of kindness, the sharing possessions, acts of support through their giving. Rev. Kendrick and his sheep moved forward with boldness. (Matthew 17:9) As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen!” Rev. Kendrick overseer “Stand Firm” and completed many tasks: electrical work, sheetrock, carpet, window, sound room and system, light fixtures, painting the church inside and out. God promised to return his people to his Lord, and to do a new thing. Rev. Kendrick marched his sheep home on October 28, 2012. As Paul fought to preserve the Churches he loved, Rev. Kendrick preserved willfully The New Liberty Hill AME Church. On Sunday, October 27, 2013, “Where Jesus Walked Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, God Has Truly Smiled on Us” our Sixth Episcopal District of the AME Church Bishop Preston Williams II and our Episcopal Supervisor Dr. Wilma Webb Williams marched with Rev. Nathaniel Kendrick and his congregation, celebrating the Dedication of the New Liberty Hill AME Church sanctuary.

11

Under the leadership of Rev. Kendrick, many souls were saved, and many members returned to the church.(Acts 18:21) But as he left, he promised, I will come back if it is God’s will. Then he set sail from Ephesus.Rev. Kendrick’s vision to lead his sheep to another level was fulfilled enough, so that he could move on to another task that he needed to complete. Through the Holy Spirit, he is grounded in faith of God. God gave him courage enthusiasm, and energy to spread His Word to all parts of the earth and to people living in worlds that are different. He moves on, to let his light shine because he knows that God has truly smiled on him. Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision the people perish.” In May 2014, Rev. Terrie Patterson came to us. Rev. Patterson vision statement for the spirits of kingdom living and kingdom building for a 21st century church by meeting the people where they are. She added new handicap signs and new tables. Rev. Patterson and members hosted the Annual conference breakfast for the Bishop. Our church continued to show growth numerically and spiritually. Members are meeting our obligations without hesitation. The steward and trustee board members are Dorothy Martin, Velma Morgan, Earnest Jones, Christine D’Antignac, Betty Burnett, Percy Paschal, Lois Kendrick, Sandra Bowdry, and N.L. Martin. 2018, Rev. Patterson organized a birthday club that is to help with long- and short-term financial goals, as we learn to spend money God’s way. Sis. Pat Durham was appointed as chairperson. In 2019, we thank God for Rev. Terrie Patterson who has been with us as our leader for 5 years.Mark 14:8, she did what she could-Jesus was praising Mary for her unselfish act of worship. The essence of worshipping Christ is to regard him with utmost love, respect, and devotion and be willing to sacrifice to him what is most precious. Our Leader Rev. Patterson is willing to sacrifice to him what is most precious, she respects the dignity of everyone, and her words are unfailingly positive. She teaches: to do thy duty, that is best; leave unto the Lord the rest. 12

During our Anniversary celebration on November 24, 2019, a corner stone was unveiled. Rev. Patterson, our Leader and the New Liberty Hill Church members understand that Jesus is the Chief Cornerstone. We built this cornerstone on the foundation. Sometimes the process is wonderful; sometimes it is painful, but in the end, we are being built into a holy temple with Christ as our Chief Cornerstone. In January 2020, Bishop Reginal T. Jackson, Presiding Prelate of the Sixth Episcopal District; speaker for the Laying of the Cornerstone Stone and the dedication of New Liberty Hill to the exclusive worship of our true and living God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. From March 2020 to June 2021, virtual worship services and meetings were held due to the Covid 19 pandemic. From June 2021 to present we continued in person and virtual worship services, enabling us to continue kingdom building on a broader scale. We have developed community partners to increase our giving and community building capacity. In conjunction with our community partners, we continue to assist in the education of our youth, increase voter participation and care for the needy. We have made necessary repairs and upgrades to our edifice, which encourages church attendance. A permanent metal roof was added to the education center due to continual needing repairs, due to structural imperfections. We continue to grow with the help of God’s Holy Spirit.

God Our Father, Christ Our Redeemer, The Holy Spirit Our Comforter, Humankind Our Family “Worship in Action “ We Shall grow through evangelism, financial commitment, and edification.

Mission Proclaim the Gospel of Christ, to maintain the worship of God, and to inspire a love for Christ. Demonstrate God’s Spirit through worship, witnessing, and minister to the needs of the people of this church and the community. 13
