Aveley Lodge has been operating successfully for many years and had managed its recruitment requirements itself. The staff involved in recruiting new carers experienced a period of difficulty not only sourcing candidates but finding that at interview candidates were not as suitable as their CV or experience suggested. The Team Leader and Director eventually became exasperated when large amounts of time were being wasted for all involved.

Although it is easier to recruit staff for adult care than child care for residential homes, Aveley Lodge found a shortage of suitable candidates - often without relevant experience and not able to drive. At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, there was a surge of candidates into the care sector. Employees in other hospitality or service sectors were furloughed and considering other employment. However, as restrictions have eased, this pool has shrunk, and a shortage has returned. There is a noticeable shortage of candidates leaving school and college with qualifications in health and care subjects into the employment market on a long-term level.

Frustrated, repeated unsuccessful recruitment kept them from focusing on their core functions of investing in existing staff to provide the highest quality care for residents.
