COVER

Heiwa: Heiwa is the pushing of the canoe on the unfolded mat to demonstrate how a canoe will actually sail in the ocean from the departure island to the destination island. The navigator uses one or more stars or constellations and uses the faunan etak (primary reference island and possibly a fauan yatil (secondary reference island) in tracking the course. Heiwa is also used to explain the feeling of the canoe's movement caused by the waves and swells hitting the canoe. Cover Design: Lawrence J. Cunningham and Manny Sikau

Editor's Introduction Welcome to Micronesian Educator, a journal reporting on educational research and practice in Guam and the Micronesian region . We have three articles in this issue. The first article, entitled "Contemporary Recollections, Maintenance, and Retention of the Japanese Language in Palau," focused on documenting elderly Palauans' recollections of their unique experiences in learning the Japanese language. Combining a single-case study method with other methods of data collection, the research on which the article is based drew on the experiences of fourteen Palauan informants. These elderly Palauans emphasized that the Japanese language has persisted in their minds, along with memories of life experiences from the period in which they acquired Japanese: memories that have not faded with time. Recommendations include further studies exploring the rate of diffusion of the Japanese language in Palau, and young Palauans' rates of recognizing Japanese words embedded in the native Palauan language. Based in part on the fact that Japanese is still widely spoken among older Palauans, this highly readable article makes a valuable contribution. The second article, entitled "Chuukese Migration to Guam: Toward Educational and Organizational Change, and Survival in a New Home," presents the findings of a recent series of data collections conducted with Chuukese migrants: summarizing their perspectives on the challenges facing Chuukese immigrants to Guam, and the solutions the interviewees recommend . The researchers distributed survey questionnaires to a sample of Chuukese migrants living in Guam, in order to learn what the migrants considered major problems and challenges associated with their transition, and conducted interviews at several different Chuukese churches in Guam . Authors emphasized the fact that in contrast to the experience of early Chuukese migrants to Guam, who arrived with highly respected traditional navigational skills and knowledge, the majority of current Chuukese migrants to Guam arrive without the employable skills needed to help them assimilate easily to life in Guam . Results from these data collections provide an interesting and detailed picture of the current opinions of Chuukese migrants in Guam. The third article is entitled "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in a First Grade Classroom." This article summarizes and draws inferences from research on ADHD-consistent behaviors as they surface in everyday classroom routines. The author of the article addressed this question by reporting on eight months of participant observation in a first grade classroom during which , in the course of fieldwork, one boy was diagnosed with the predominantly inattentive type of ADHD. The author supplemented ethnographic data with five in-depth interviews of other first grade teachers, discussing their experiences with similar students. The author points out those teachers cannot help but compare students in terms of their behavior, and that the relentlessly individualizing nature of the educational process means that the more difficult students in the classroom stand out. This article is written in a readily accessible style. We welcome active responses from our readers, and hope they will be encouraged to submit their work for future issues, so that this publication continues to provide an important medium for sharing empirical research, literature reviews, theoretical perspectives, opinion papers, and practical applications. Finally, I would like to thank all of the authors who contributed to this issue; and all of the reviewers, for their enthusiasm and dedication: without which this journal could not exist.
