volunteeredforserviceasasoldierintwowars.HeworkedfortheCentralIntelligence AgencyonRussianaffairs,andhesatatthefeetoftheworld=sgreatesttheologiansashe preparedforalifeofministry.HebecamechaplainatYaleUniversity,andheexpressed theheightofhishomileticalpowersaspastorofRiversideChurch.Hehelpedto galvanizeawarenessofthecivilrightsstruggleasoneofelevenFreedomRiderswho venturedtoMontgomery,Alabama,andhewrote,mused,andprayedinhisfinalhome inruralVermont.
Intheexpressionofhisopinionsandinhispublicministries,hewasnostranger tocontroversy.Andyethiswarmth,charmandbasicpositiveregardforallpersons wouldeventuallyearnhimrespectevenfromthosewhodidn=tshareoneiotaofhis positions.
