holiday sensibility

oct-nov

C

lassic holiday with a bold twist

Within the women’s Ready-To-Wear Resort 2013 collection, the holiday sensibility is grounded in abstract traditional prints and streamlined silhouettes. Classic elements, including suiting, animal prints, metallic fabrications, and embellishments, are deconstructed for a fresh, modern twist on the holiday season. Silhouettes are clean and streamlined, with a pared-back take on tailoring. The aesthetic is strong, carried by the boldness of motorcycle jackets, visible zipper detailing, and leather contrast sleeves.

P

ixelation and Contrast

The holiday mood takes inspiration from highly contrasted and even distorted imagery. Reflections of light break up dark spaces to give depth, washed-out snapshots bring an air of nostalgia, and doodles by Hattie Stewart reinterpret and deconstruct traditional images of beauty. Classic motifs, including houndstooth and leopard, are digitally pixelated and blurred, while festive embellishment is either encrusted or appears as striking digital trompe l’oeil prints. The pared-back color palette results in a holiday wardrobe that is sophisticated and strong.

RE-SPRING PRETTY

The Pre-Spring sensibility of Resort 2013 emphasizes femininity and nonchalance, including body-conscious and fit-and-flare silhouettes in stripes, lace, classic floral patchworks, and engineered botanical prints. Buy-nowwear-now easy outfit builders include delicate silk tops and versatile day-to-night dresses in optimistic, bright colors, paired with chic navy solids. Although Spring is already in the air, cozy utilitarian outerwear lends an urban edge to this otherwise very feminine collection of Marc by Marc Jacobs iconic silhouettes..

EMININE, MODERN, AND FRESH

With ease and simplicity at its core, the Pre-Spring mood is light and bright. The inspirational imagery draws from a surreal representation of color found through manipulating light and playing on the potential exposure ranges to create different moods within a single image. Musical influences are melodic and ambient. The succinct and happy collection mixes bright, feminine hues with ultra-modern botanical prints for a tight, cohesive capsule of very wearable products that are the perfect precursor to Spring.

trompe l’oeil

Animal motifs in leopard and zebra add an unexpected element to holiday dressing. Seen in pop colors and tonal variations, these wild prints are found in outerwear, suiting separates, and everyday knits.

Traditional menswear fabrics, including houndstooth, herringbone and tweed, are refreshed by digital printing and distortion effects, including pixelation, blurring, and manipulation of scale. Find them in jackets, skirts, tops, and dresses.

Lavish trompe l’oeil prints of embroidered floral motifs over lace and photo-real printed sequins offer a casual take on holiday embellishments. Find them in sportswear-inspired sweatshirts and dresses, and silk pants and tops.

ODERN COCKTAIL attire

Taking classic styles associated with holiday parties and transforming them, Resort 2013 modernizes and redefines cocktail and festive attire. Following the aesthetic of pared-back tailoring seen throughout the collection, silhouettes incorporate streamlined and elongated suiting-inspired elements, in chic white, cream, and high-contrast black. Tuxedo-inspired skirts, pants, and cocktail dresses offer a timeless-with-a-twist attitude, while shimmering trompe l’oeil sequin prints upgrade sweatshirts and puffer jackets. Classic, seasonal metallic hues pop up in elevated leather pieces, including transitional motorcycle jackets and skirts. These pieces, alongside textural sweaters, embellished separates, and luxurious wool outerwear, provide a luxurious touch to the collection.

T’S ALL IN THE BAG

This season’s handbags and SLG’s drew heavily on music for inspiration, with an extensive range of distinctive yet casual products capturing a youthful, festival-ready spirit. A casual yet elevated new leather group called Softy Saddle features easyto-wear rounded silhouettes and satchel shapes that have an equestrian feel. Totes have been expanded on with a new group called What’s The T, offered across a wide range of price points, colorways, and fabrics. And of course, core groups reemerge with novelty varieties.

RAVEHEART

FAST FACTS:

fashion

A rave is a frenzied or boisterous party originating mostly from acid house music parties. Raves typically feature loud, amplified electronic music and light or laser shows.

The Raveheart group focuses on one key silhouette offered in solid and metallic leather. The slim cross body shape makes this bag the perfect hands-free party companion.

Braveheart is a historical film made in 1995 about Scottish warriors in the Middle Ages. It was directed by and stars Mel Gibson. It became famous for the intensity of the war cry (“braveheart”) of the main character, rebel leader William Wallace.

GROUP NAME ORIGIN: The group name is a play on words combining “rave” with “Braveheart.” Raveheart is the ultimate party (or rave) bag. It was inspired by a friend of one of our handbag designers who combined these two ideas for a Halloween costume she wore to a party.v MATERIALS: Solid: 100% Cow Leather Metallic: 100% foil coated Cow Leather body with lamb leather trim HARDWARE: Clamp logo plaque, metal finish varies by body color

Hattie Stewart Professional doodler and illustrator Hattie Stewart is a London-based artist with credits from magazines like Nylon, GARAGE and Interview. Hattie recently collaborated with Marc by Marc Jacobs to create illustrations for many of the design elements seen throughout the Resort 2013 collection. Her iconic “doodle-bombs” are showcased in Gift Giving, Jewelry, and Tech, and were a major source of inspiration for all of the Marc by Marc Jacobs design teams. We had the chance to sit down with Hattie to ask about her work, what inspires her and what she thinks about Marc by Marc Jacobs. Q:What can you tell us about your background? When and why did you start drawing? A: I grew up in Colchester, Essex, a great town full of amazing and talented people which is about an hour or so out of London, and gradually ended up in East London after completing my Illustration degree at Kingston University. My family has always been supportive of my work, as I’ve always drawn from a young age. I remember I used to draw my own toys, especially mermaids, as I was obsessed with The Little Mermaid, What I do remember is that I would spend an hour drawing them and 10 minutes playing, so doodling was always my priority!

Q. How did your style develop? A: The development of my style definitely wasn’t a conscious one. I just knew what I liked to draw. I started using one sketchbook a year and I have five now, so they are more like visual journals. Looking through them I can easily see how my work has adapted, changed, and been influenced by what’s around me and how it has led, visually, to where I am today. My uncles Paul and Terry on either side of my family also drew cartoons, so I would always draw with them when I was younger. Paul taught me skill, Terry taught me how to think. At the end of the day, style has to grow organically and you have to follow your own instincts and not be afraid of new ideas; as soon as you’re inspired you have to act on it, whether it works out or not.

Q: What artists have most inspired you? A: This changes all the time. I love the work of many of my peers such as Suzi Kemp, Kate Prior, Lynnie Zulu, and Kyle Platts to name a few, but I also love the work of Julie Verhoeven, Pauline Boty, Warhol, and Takashi Murakami. There are so many, but I pretty much take inspiration from anywhere and anyone. I especially love reading biographies and watching documentaries of all sorts. It’s not always necessarily to me about the work itself, but rather how people come to accomplish it. I am more inspired by the story behind an artist because as a young artist, I feel you are constantly trying to figure out your own identity, where you want to be, whether you’re making the right choices, etc. So learning about someone’s struggles can help to overcome your own. Q: Is there any thing you like to watch, or an artist or album you like listening to when you are creating your work? A: I love to watch documentaries; Art & Copy, Beautiful Losers, The Crash Reel, and anything nature related. I recently watched a bunch of documentaries with topics that went from the suffragettes, World War Two conspiracies, sharks, The importance of volcanoes, and a biographical documentary of the inspirational author Alice Walker. I will watch anything and everything! Music-wise it depends on what I’m obsessing over at one given time, but I can always rely on a radio station called Jammin 105, which my friend found on iTunes, that plays uninterrupted Oldies and Northern Soul which I LOVE. Q:Before you start working on a new project, do you have particular things that you like to do -- a sort of ritual perhaps--that help to inspire you? A: I always tidy away any previous projects so my head space is clear and ready for the new one. I tidy my room/studio, I get everything laid out, and set up hours of documentaries to watch whilst working. Finally, I make a cup of tea. If any of that is interrupted I find it hard to focus! Q: Is there a certain shop or restaurant you always visit when you are in NYC or London? A: Tiny’s Giant on Rivington Street in NYC for Coffee and yummy Veggie sandwiches at the Fix Coffee shop on Rivington Street in London!

Q: The artwork you did for our Resort 2013 collection has a lot of use of the “evil eye” -- where did the idea for using this element originate? How did they come together? A: Eyes have always played a key part in my work, as they are what really gives something character, and as well as their spiritual and cultural significance. They just bring everything to life. I always feel when creating work that I don’t develop ideas but create them. With this collaboration, I love how there are lots of spiritual or supernatural undertones, the eyes, the crow, the black cat… It’s subtle and underlying but open to anyone’s interpretation, not just my own. I like to think that my subconscious is working a lot faster during a project’s inception and creation, and in ways that my conscious mind only catches on to later! Q: How did the animal concept emerge? A:This was developed between myself and the Marc by Marc Jacobs team. Katie Hillier LOVES bunnies and so the animal concept was born! It was mostly about having fun. The idea of creating animals as the central characters was an exciting way to develop my own doodle-bomb project that was unique to the Marc by Marc Jacobs brand. Q: Which of the graphics you produced for MBMJ was your favorite and what do you like best about it? A: I love the Black Cat, I can’t really describe why, I just love how the illustration interacts and flows around the central character. The Zebra makes me laugh! I like my illustrations to be playful but tonguein-cheek. Hopefully this collection embodies that. Q: Is there anything about the Marc by Marc brand that you particularly connect with? A: Aside from everything? The youthful but grown-up aesthetic, and the playful, tongue-in-cheek attitude. I feel we embody similar spirits in our work. :) Q: What message would you have for some of the folks in our stores around the world who might also love to draw and be interested in illustration? A: Don’t get mad, get drawing. If you love it, then do it. It doesn’t matter who for or where it’s going to be. If it is what you love to do, keep going. Even for just the thrill of it.
