Academic Project 2015

Hybrid linker

BogotĂĄ, Colombia

The idea of the project was to establish a connection between four different neighborhoods that are found at this point. An urban park of a metropolitan type was proposed that would generate that desired union. This with the intention that it could also fill the deficiencies related to the scarcity of green areas, educational institutions and housing densification projects that were projected for the area at that time.

The workplace was a large lot where the former Bavaria brewery previously operated. After being abandoned (and even during its operation), this space became a large island that separated four neighborhoods, each with very different morphological characteristics and urban dynamics. This is how the main function of the project became to make this place a space that could not only physically unite the four borders, but also use the potential that each one of them had in order to integrate them into this great metropolitan park. For the design of this park, the La villete park in Paris was taken as one of the main references, since the

proposal was made taking into account the different interposed systems that would make up the place. This is because this space would represent the union of four different fronts; In other words, the program of activities turned out to be very varied, in addition to having the challenge of connecting the four “border contexts. In this way, the vehicular and pedestrian traffic systems, the environmental system (bodies of water and trees), the housing system, the education and research system and finally the recreational system were raised.

Water is a fundamental element in the project, because for the time of its construction it is expected that energy can be produced through water, so the park would be self-sustaining.

2. Business building

This type of commerce was implemented in this way because informal commerce is very common in the edges of the place.

3. Sports building

They were mainly screened on the main road due to the future projection of making this area a space of great business activity.

4. Edificio de vivienda

Housing buildings are being raised due to future projections for the site. It is proposed to densify the sector and make the buildings have enough free space and connections between them.

Sports spaces were implemented due to the large percentage of young population in the neighborhoods. In addition to the lack of this type of space in the place.

Academic Project 2015

Exodus in Bavaria Bogotá, Colombia

The worksho consisted of taking conceptual projects carried out during the 70s-80s by architects and architecture studios with the intention of making an argued criticism about the way in which architecture is currently considered. This was done by taking the workplaces in which it was proposed to implement the idea developed in the conceptual proposals mentioned above.

The project chosen for the workplace comparison was architect Rem Koolhaas’ graduate thesis “Exodus”. As is well known, his work consisted in creating a scenario that expressed the “obtimity and ingenuity of visionary architecture”, expressing it through a walled linear city in which there was a utopian life and whose residents would be called voluntary prisoners of architecture . Taking into account what the large batch of the Bavaria factory represented at that time, it was decided to relate Koolhaas’s thesis from a dystopian point of view. Because this place

in Bogotá represented an enclave for those who inhabited its borders, it was decided to exaggerate this enclave as much as possible, in such a way that they would create scenarios that would suggest and show a criticism related to the situation generated in the place. For this reason, the enclave became the massive wall suggested by Koolhaas, thus highlighting the way the abandoned Bavarian lot was doing on site. Likewise, instead of creating internal spaces for leisure and pleasure, dystopian spaces opposed to the above were proposed.

7

Bavaria’s exodus

8

Scenarios of the exodus

Two perspectives of what the enclave would produce in a society willing to be locked up in an “empty place, without utility or life. The idea of a space similar to a jail in which no one would want to be in. Despite having taken the situation experienced in the abandoned lot to the limit and exaggeration, the criticism also leads to discover that these types of places can become spaces that definitely do not contribute anything to the city. They become islands that, after being used are abandoned, leaving problems and situations derived from an inert space; darkness, insecurity, loneliness ... In this way Koolhaas’s work is related again, because in the end it is a critique of the way in which architecture and the city are viewed.

Social housing Academic Project 2017

Social housing complex Bogotรก, Colombia

The project carried out is based on the main concept of establishing differences between the way in which social housing is perceived and priority housing. It tried to create awareness in the current situation in Latin America and how architecture can provide solutions to provide a better quality of life with the few resources that are allocated for these projects.

The project was carried out in a town in Bogotรก known for being one of the largest in the city but also with difficult social situations to handle for a context like Colombia. A detailed study was carried out about the urban dynamics of the same, this with the intention of being able to propose a housing project that would respond to dynamic dimensions. Some of the most important characteristics are related to the gradual growth of the home, parallel to the growth of the family nucleus. Likewise, it is worth highlighting the self-construction characteristic of the houses in this town. On the other hand, it is important to point out that the social situation of

the place was taken into account, so the project focused on making a detailed study of the types of families in the sector, together with the activities carried out for their survival. Three major typologies and an important variety of activities were found, always hindered by the difficult accessibility to the town and the high levels of insecurity. For this reason, this project was taken as the perfect opportunity to generate a change in the way of life of a part of the population studied, taking advantage of the great possibilities that social housing offers us to create sustainable projects.

Three types of housing were developed based on the three types of families most representative of the sector. All coming from the hexagonal shape: greater possibilities for better ventilation and lighting.

Types of housing intertwined with each other, coming from the same hexagonal shape, but with different open spaces.

Three-block buildings are formed with the intention of obtaining a better and more efficient occupation of the land.

Setbacks are generated in the way the dwelling is superimposed, thus confusing the circulation space between the building.

In this way, it creates an environment between homes that facilitates air circulation and an efficient entry of light.

13

Building plan with the three types of housing For the project, it was decided to implement the activity of urban terraces, since according to the study carried out, several of the families came from places where they were dedicated to cultivating and for various reasons had to travel to the city. Taking this situation into account, it was decided to contribute a little to this reality by designing spaces that could be used for the activity that they already knew how to do. It would also represent a possible economic aid, a fact that could possibly boost the agricultural development of this town and also a new type of economy.

1. Rectangular typology Designed for families made up of: Mother, father and two children. Greater cultivation spaces and less square meters built.

2. Octagonal typology Designed for families made up of: Mother, father and three children. Reason why it is a more spacious type of house.

3. Cross typology Designed for mothers head of the family. One of the most common typologies in the country and also in this town.

Sustainable building Academic Project 2017

Adaptative reuse Torino, Italia

This project was carried out during the master’s degree in the development of sustainable architectural projects. Reason why everything was given starting from the premise that reusing already built but abandoned spaces is a very positive way of contributing to the planet in environmental and architectural terms. Likewise, ventilation, lighting and energy use techniques were implemented to make efficient use of local resources.

The project was developed in Turin. A city characterized by being very industrial and the growth niche of Italian car factories and also of other types of products related to the economic growth of the country. In this case, an old fabric factory was chosen, for its time abandoned and with great potential to be reused since the structure was still in good condition. In this way, it was decided to create a market where agricultural products could be commercialized and also to install restaurants that used such products. As it is lived in the central markets of several cities in Italy.

17

Old factory Large warehouses where machines and storage spaces used to be. Little entry of natural light and built elements that were no longer used and could provide space for the creation of the central patio

Research Center

18

Proposal Elimination of second floors in two of the warehouses to improve the entry of light and ventilation. Elimination of elements to give space to the patio and insertion of elements that could make the space look lighter.

Analysis of the incidence of the implantation of a possible market in the place. Attractor axes and potential flows to attract. Important presence of housing and opportunities for new pedestrian paths that could connect with the project.

19

Comfortable thermo-acoustic boxes

The sustainable strategy implemented was to create boxes in which the activities that would require specific ventilation and thermal work could take place. Thus, not all the walls or roofs would have to be worked, as they represented more work and higher economic costs. In this way, the circulation would be outside the thermal space created, giving rise to small spaces in which the quality of the food and the restaurant products would not be lost.

Academic Project 2020

Waking up Honda BogotĂĄ, Colombia

The thesis at the end of the master’s degree was developed in a small city in Colombia, Honda. The abandonment of working in this place occurred due to its great historical background, since during the 20th century it was a city of great commercial importance since it served as a port of arrival and departure for ships with merchandise from abroad.

Downtown Honda is considered to be a heritage site and therefore of protection. However, the aid that the city has received in terms of programs that promote or take care of its architecture and also its urban dynamics are scarce. It is for this reason that the main issue was the deterioration of a deteriorating urban center with great potential to be reactivated. An urban project was carried out in which buildings in a state of abandonment and deterioration were recovered but in

addition to being patrimonial in order to create new commercial and, especially, cultural axes with which new dynamics more related to the large percentage of young population and the immense tourist potential of the city. This through the implementation of a specific program for each building recovered, in addition to its restoration and recovery.

23

Proposal urban plan Creation of new cultural and commercial hubs. The darkest buildings are the buildings recovered and used as triggers for new urban dynamics.

Alto del Rosario Church of great historical, cultural and architectural relevance. In front, on the square there is great potential for outdoor activities.

Cuesta San Francisco Street that connects the main axis developed in the project. Solonias architecture, cobbled street. It ends in the market place, also of great heritage value.

24

Market Former convent. Protected as a heritage building, it is located right on the axis of the river and the intersection of two very commercial streets in Honda.

Proposed Nolli plan Development of a very permeable urban first floor, due to the large number of cultural and commercial buildings on the most important axes. Synonymous with a very pedestrian city

Old Bavaria factory Old Union Theater GualĂ river River adjacent to the Magdalena River, one of the most important at the national level, as it connects the country from north to south. The GualĂ river divides the entire center of the city.

Building also protected at the patrimonial level. It is one of the most important, since there used to be around 7 in times of economic boom.

The largest abandoned lot in the center of the city (3 hectares) and with great potential to be reactivated, since its location is strategic and its large area allows a project that drastically influences the new development of Honda.

25

Scenario of commercial reactivation of the city

One of the main scenarios proposed for the development of the project was to make the city a very touristy place, a factor that would promote a new type of commerce according not only to the current needs of the city, but also to future projects to make Honda an indispensable place to visit when you arrive in Colombia.

26

Scenario of cultural reactivation of the city

This scenario is related to the potential of making what attracts people to visit the city is the presence of a cultural niche represented mainly by the younger generations. The idea arises because in the demographic research carried out it was found that the young population represents a large percentage of the population and also represents a great opportunity to transmit the customs that can make Honda a very culturally active space.

27

Old beer fabric “Bavaria”: Proposal

28

Reactivation of the old Bavaria factory lot It was decided to intervene in the lot of the old Bavaria factory since it turned out to be a great opportunity to make it a potentiating element of the development of the area. In the place, three buildings of industrial typology were rehabilitated to create centers for education, research and sports. In addition to creating a large green area that could be used for outdoor activities also using water as a climate control element.

29

Cultural center One of the restored buildings was the old factory warehouse. The area and the height of the place gave the opportunity to create a second floor and propose a program composed of: Music, dance, theater rooms and a library.

Honda’s temperature ranges between 32 ° and 36 ° throughout the year, so the ventilation and cooling system were of vital importance to the design. It is expected that in these buildings mechanisms that do not include air conditioning can be used, which is why the location of the windows, and the materials used for the facade were arranged with the intention of lowering the temperatures in the building.

The other reused buildings were those that were in better condition, within which there was one with characteristics of industrial heritage. The park is designed primarily for the use of children and young people, as the idea of the project was also focused on encouraging, through the proposed activities, the inclusion of this population in the development of the city of Honda. Thus, being the largest abandoned lot, it becomes a great trigger to start implementing the urban proposal designed for Honda.

Building desing Contest 2016

Cultural center “Portal el Tunal”

Bogotá, Colombia

The purpose of the contest was to build an urban facility that would respond to the needs of the environment chosen to work. The idea was to use steel in an innovative way and make the design an essential part. It was also expected that the workplace would have the conditions to contribute positively to a type of population that is mostly “homeless” or with critical conditions of a healthy quality of life.

The urban area is located in a lot near the “transmilenio” station (most used public transport in Bogotá) El Tunal. In other words, it is located at the entrance to the road that leads to Ciudad Bolivar, a town with difficult social conditions to manage. However, the reason for choosing this space was due to the almost zero presence of cultural facilities in the sector. The building is made up of recreational rooms, theaters, libraries, music, dance and arts rooms. Its irregular shape urges visuals and the importance of generating a large welcoming space that also accommodates outdoor activities. The area in which the building would be implanted is very

mountainous, so the idea was to highlight this context and also work with the ground to create space also related to the activities that take place inside and outside it. With regard to steel, a structure was developed that would allow large spans without the need to use many columns, this is how we worked with large metal structures joined together by beams and tubular joists, forming large section lattices in which it was possible also create spaces such as corridors or even some study rooms.

There are ample circulation spaces as it is intended to house a significant number of people. It was decided to leave a large space in the center through which the building is expected to be ventilated.

40

Fifth floor

Due to the large steel structure that handles both the beams and the columns, the spaces such as the bathrooms, the study and coworking rooms are located laterally, thus being able to curve large lights on cantilevers and terraces.

Foodtruck park

Bogotá, Colombia

The project was carried out during the practices carried out in Studio Creaq. It is a “food truck” park where a terrace was also built for the sale of “Bogotá Beer Company” beer. The task was to allow the trucks to enter and position themselves around the beer terrace, creating a festive and entertaining atmosphere.

Bogotá Beer Company is an emblematic beer company in Bogotá, known for having several bars around the city. Its style is characterized by being “pub” type spaces, warm, welcoming and at the same time fun. At the time he designed the project, he considered using a type of furniture already designed, combined with details related to the activity of the place and with the idea of a garden-type portico of the space where beer is sold. The lot located near the “pink zone” of the city is rectangular and lies be-

tween two buildings, so the space had to be measured depending on the way in which the food paths would enter and exit, since the main element was the island of beer sale. It was also important to leave spaces for circulation in accordance with the norm. At the time it was one of the first projects of this style, which is why new elements had to be designed such as the bars and the pergola.

43

“Beer garden

Care was taken to make the place have enough vegetation without drastically interrupting the flow of people. It was obtained by using ferns in the pergola and for the moment, two central trees that divided the space. Likewise, wooden partitions and small flower gardens were used that also served as dividers between tables.

Analog photography Academic Project 2015

Invisible everyday life Bogotá, Colombia

The spontaneous, the right moment, the reflection of the faces in the lens, the feelings and memories that evoke the images are infinite. The value that each person gives to what they observe is what gives life to things, what matters to us and our thoughts. Street faces wants to give life to the everyday, but invisible at the same time, the faces that make up our urban landscape, the beauty found on a street, in a square, in a park, the astonishing everyday beauty ...

The project was developed in an elective course at the Javeriana University. The basic concepts of analog photography are introduced and specifically in this exhibition topics of interest to each student were worked on. The theme chosen for the exhibition was “the portrait”, because from the author’s way of seeing, it is very interesting to experience in photography the way in which life interacts. It is very interesting to be able to fix details in gestures, features, attitudes generated by their relationship with the environment and life in general. In “invisible dailyities” an attempt was made to portray a very particu-

lar Latinomeríca phenomenon: informal sales. On the one hand, such a situation can be seen as the result of a government with few capacities to provide opportunities with which people have a better quality of life, without However, the other side of the coin shows us a phenomenon that we want to or not activate the city and it is too useful for citizens. Despite this, it is very common that for those who the street is their workspace, their activity and what they themselves build so positively for the city go unnoticed.
