The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Ohio State administers the ACCESS Collaborative Program. This program aids single parents who desire the opportunity to attend college. We proposed to create a branch at Weinland Park that would serve students and the neighborhood. The program includes: residences, a day care center, classrooms, computer labs with internet access, a cafĂŠ and a garden center. Glass boxes were be placed among wooden facades as a way to display the activities in each part of the complex. The surfaces of the buildings take on different patterns according to the need for natural light and privacy. In the residential area, child safety was the main design driver, from the sliding interior panels to the enclosed shared backyard, so that all moms can watch all children at all times.

The Chelsea is a hotel in New York City which historically housed extended stay guests. It became well known because of the celebrities, rock stars and other sex socialites that made it their home and helped establish its reputation as a facilitator grocery of unique guest interactions. The intention of this proposal is to transplant the spirit of the Chelsea from NYC to Columbus, to a site in the Short North Arts District. The The Short North environment diverse community in this neighborhood would favor the “Chelsea” type of social and artistic interaction. The form of the building begins as a miesian, rectilinear high rise with a prototypical floor plan. This floor plan gets broken down by a stain that manifests itself throughout the building. The stain is used as a device that disrupts the existing plan and creates anomalies in the program and circulation. These anomalies turn into public spaces, becoming apparent in the façade. The skin of the building is composed of unfinished metal, so that the stain keeps growing overtime in the form of corrosion.

The idea of relative movement within water is the main focus of this project. Submersed in water contained within a vessel which itself is floating in water, one is able to move with or against the flow of the current carrying the boat. The boat allows the passenger the possibility of taking a break from the metropolis. In the boat, one can swim or relax in a hot tub. The main concept for this project is to have a shell within a shell. The former holds a lap pool with gathering areas for multiple people, while the latter supports this microenvironment and separates it from the untamed exterior. On the lower level, the outer shell holds hot tubs, a bar and dressing rooms. Male and female hot tubs are incompletely segregated – eventually joining one another in a shared tub.In Chinese culture, male prevails over female. The male form holds more power both in the working world and in personal relationships. The outer shell represents the male, which surrounds and protects the inside shell representing the female. The male is solid, massive and muscular and supports the female, which is delicate, smooth and more fragile. At one point the female form invades that of the male, expressing the more modern view of female independence and equality.

CAMBRIDGE ART CENTER

CAMBRIDGE ART CENTER CAMBRIDGE, MA Career Discovery Program, Graduate School of Design at Harvard, 2005 Instructor Farzana Ghandi The Art Center takes place on the Harvard Campus. The building proposed was also an art school. Because light is an important component to this program, I decided to experiment with the use of light in the building. The program wraps around a central light well, where the vertical circulation is located and highlighted. This light well shifts to a larger size and form as it reaches the roof, to funnel in the light. The auditorium and galleries are lit by narrow slits on the roof, while studio spaces have abundant light.

HOTEL AT THE MISSIONS

HOTEL AT THE MISSIONS SÃO MIGUEL DAS MISSÕES, BRAZIL Vertical Studio, Landscape Arch and Architecture, Ohio State University, 2009 Professors Ann Pendleton-Jullian and Jason Kentner Partnership with Marcela Figueira While in São Miguel, we identified the sensation of isolation as the greatest attractive feature of the town. Taking this into consideration, we propose an urban plan consisting of a shift in the main routes of access to the city to peripheral areas. This shift will stimulate the growth of the city within 3 urban peninsulas while enlarging the area surrounding the mission ruins and maintaining the feeling of remoteness in that area. Each of the peninsulas will take on a different approach: going from more rural, to more urban. We propose three hotels: each placed strategically adjacent to the peninsula that would allow a different speed of travel experience. The three hotels will vary in their built-to-landscape ratio respecting its adjacencies. We propose creating three units (bedroom, bathroom and garden), which would be put together in accordance to the needs of the tourists catered by each hotel.

NEW AIRPORT TERMINAL

NEW AIRPORT TERMINAL SANTARÉM, BRAZIL Thesis Project, Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007 Professor José Maria Bassalo Santarém is the third most important city in the Amazon region of Brazil. It is located almost exactly between the two most important ones, Belém and Manaus. Because Santarém is right on the junction of the Amazon River and the Tapajós River, it has shown great economical and touristic growth in the past years. The existing airport of Santarém serves approximately ten municipalities nearby and has experienced an intense increase in passengers since the major Brazilian airline Gol included it in its routes. The current infra-structure does not accommodate the new demand of flights and passengers. This proposal for a new terminal quadruples the airport’s capacity in terms of cargo and passenger demands, with its 11 thousand square meters divided in 3 stories. To make use of the year-round abundant sunlight of this tropical location, the roof is made of a translucent canvas tensile structure that would cut artificial lighting usage down to a minimum.

In this proposal, the application of the canvas is tensioned over the spatial latticed beam. The association of tissue and the metallic structure is repeated laterally, forming a light, easy to replicate structure.

In the center, the roof is raised to make room for a third level observatory, taking into consideration a habit of the local inhabitants currently: going to the airport for a stroll, a snack, and a view of the airplanes and of the river backdrop.

OHIO HEALTHWAYS

OHIO HEALTHWAYS Ohio State University, 2011 Professor Karen Lewis Partnership with Marcela Figueira This project proposes to connect the 3C’s through a Health corridor around a rail line. Ohio has three large internationally known hospitals, and because of its low cost of living, mid-size cities and lots of available space, it could be a successful destination for wellness. The population of Ohio could also benefit from the pursuit of an exemplary healthier lifestyle. Each of the hospitals, as train stations, would become a regional hub and create a new connection between the cities. The main idea is to transform the health experience from “ill” to “well”, bringing in the element of nature to tie together the different scales of wellness.

Water and Health

The 315 health corridor

The presence of water has the potential of changing the character of the health experience. Lining water fronts with parks adds the nature element to the scales of wellness, encouraging the pursuit of health.

Linking physical activites with the health facilities creates a new way of achieving a higher state of Wellness and allows the contact between different users of the system.

Revisioning the hospital room

There are four essential qualities that needed to be part of the long-term hospital environment: a sense of control, comfort, a sense of connectedness with life outside the hospital, and family environment, in order to transform the experience.

Wellness

Health is the general condition of a person in all aspects. It is also a level of functional and/or metabolic efficiency of an organism, often implicitly human. From Google dictionary: "The state of being free from illness or injury". Welness embraces beyond health. It is related to peace of mind, calmness and comfort. Hapiness is said to only be possible through welness. Being well means being in synch with oneself; with one’s thoughts and actions; feelings and emotions.
