Liquidlife mag autumn 2015

Letter To our Liquidlife readers, Wow, what an awesome summer we had on our glorious Sunshine Coast! I am very excited to share our Autumn Mag with you as we have some inspiring young locals who are taking the world by storm. Kelly Norris, our cover boy, is not only a charming, down to earth guy, but he is also carving up waves all over the globe. He has plenty of local businesses supporting him and I was lucky enough to meet some of the inspiring people in Kelly’s life. We also have a spread on the talented James Windsor. He knew what he wanted from a young age and due to his parents’ belief in him, and their obvious support of their son, James went worldwide with his passion for Wakeboarding. Parents play such an important role in developing and nurturing a child’s love of the water. I’ve chatted to some local Sunshine Coast kids who have told me of the different ways they love spending their time and I’m sure these have all been encouraged by their parents. My own parents were heavily involved in windsurfing for many years and my brother and I grew up at the water’s edge while my parents entered comps and spent time with friends, on the water. This passion lead to my brother, Greg, becoming a windsurfer at the tender age of three and it is no doubt that due to my parents’ example and encouragement, he still loves the water and has now extended this passion onto kitesurfing and surfing. As the coast calms down to a regular pace again, make sure you get out there and make the most of the amazing opportunities along our coastline! Enjoy our Autumn read… Liesl xx

There are many magnificent spots on the coast to get out on the waves for a surf. Coolum local and 2014 Carve Pro Junior Champion, Kelly Norris, picks his favourites as Yaroomba and Wurtulla. Originally from Gosford on the Central Coast of NSW, Kelly moved to Coolum when he was eight years old to focus on Nippers at Sunshine Beach. He did this for two successful seasons, becoming Champion Ironman and winning medals at State when he was 11. It was then that Kelly released that it was surfing that was his passion. He entered his first surf comp when he was 11 and has never looked back.

Kelly Carves it up Kelly says that it was his dad that ignited his love of surfing. On a family holiday at South West Rocks (about a nine hour drive away from us here), they got out the boards and after two weeks – Kelly was hooked. His dad travels with him on most of his surfing adventures around the world and is a great support as he has already surfed most of these spots himself. Kelly has surfed in many beautiful places including Samoa, Bali and the Cook Islands. However, he says the best places are at Sunset in Hawaii and Riviera De Lage in Portugal.

After competing in many comps over the years, his most notable achievements are winning the Carve Pro Junior in February 2014 and qualifying for the Australasia Pro Junior World Titles last November. Kelly aspires to be a pro surfer, and as 2015 is his last year to compete in the Pro Junior Series, he will be working hard in order to qualify for the World Tour in 2016 when he turns 21. He will be competing in a few World Qualifying Series events to boost his ranking. His sponsors: Futures Fins, House of Marley, FK Unlimited, SurfAir Beach Hotel, Emjays Coffee Coolum, Firewire Surfboards and Maxum Watches are all keen to support Kelly in his journey to become pro. Kelly remembers one of his greatest experiences with surfing was his first ever trip to Hawaii in 2012. He went over with a mate from Sunshine Beach and met up with Barton Lynch (ex world champion surfer) where they cruised along the North Shore stopping at the best spots for a surf. He loves how surfing clears his mind and he also enjoys getting out there with his mates for a ride. The thing that Kelly loves the most about our beautiful Sunshine Coast is that the people are friendly, the waves are good and he doesn’t mind taking a boat to Old Woman Island for a good old fish. So to all you readers – get out and carve those waves!

One night, two years ago, my husband and I were hosting a BBQ at our home with our 18-month-old son and newborn baby daughter. We had invited another couple over with their 2-year-old girl. We intentionally moved the BBQ inside the pool area, as we were concerned that the young kids might touch it and burn themselves, so my husband and his friend were by the poolside, tending to the hot coals. My friend and I were sitting down at the table, deep in conversation when suddenly, I heard my son screaming. It sent shivers down my spine as I realised I had lost sight of him over the past few minutes. I looked up to see him in my husband’s arms, dripping wet, fully dressed in his pajamas. It was about 16 degrees that night. He had

been playing around the pool ‘helping’ the men cook, when he fell, head first into our freezing pool. Thankfully, my quickacting husband was there and pulled him out, feet first, before he sank any further. I didn’t even hear a splash! That was a wake-up call to all of us that complacency and the poolside do not mix. The night could have had a much more sombre ending had Greg not seen Henry fall into that pool. As a mother of three adorable kids, Henry (3), Rose (2) and Jonty (4 weeks), I sometimes pinch myself at how lucky we are to live in this amazing part of the world, the Sunshine Coast, with its plethora of beautiful beaches, rivers and waterways. Lucky as we are though, the water is not without risk and can be a dangerous and unpredictable place. Each year in Australia our children continue to drown at our beaches and in backyard pools, dams and rivers. I cannot begin to imagine how I would cope if this happened to one of my children and in a place where living is so focused around the outdoors and watersports, to me it is a no brainer that my kids learn to swim. We are blessed by warm, balmy weather for so much of the year that at our house, the pool is a constant attraction. That said, even on the cool days, my kids are begging to go for a swim. It just seems to have a draw card that kids can’t resist, and they don’t seem to feel the cold like I do either! Knowing that they are taking part in a structured swimming class and are learning how to be safe around the water, gives me great relief when supervising their poolside antics. Every week we head off to swimming lessons where I watch these little creatures develop a confidence in and around the water. It gives me peace of mind that they are learning such important life skills. To me, safety is paramount, and I see the results each week as they show me how to safely climb in and out of the pool, reach for the edge, kick and paddle. They learn quickly and the water play becomes so natural, it is a joy to watch. Even at bath time I notice a water confidence that wasn’t there before. Not only are they learning how to swim, they are having fun at the same time, keeping active and developing a love for the water. Growing up as little Aussies, water will be a way of life for them. For now it is about becoming familiar, but it will be a skill that follows them throughout life, as they go on to become competent swimmers and participate in higher level activities such as nippers, school swimming and recreational watersports.

There’s an age old adage that says if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. That’s exactly the case for 19 year old world champion wakeboarder – James Windsor. Known as ‘The Cable Park King’, James fell in love with wakeboarding on a school trip to our local Go Wake Cable Park in Bli Bli. He said as soon as he started on the wakeboard and stood up, he’d fallen in love. He was so thrilled by the experience that he went home that afternoon and asked his mum for a membership to the park so he could go wakeboarding all the time. At just 13, James knew he had discovered a very real passion. He completed his schooling via Skype and finished a traineeship at the cable park. This allowed him to dedicate many hours of his day to training hard.

At 15, James left home to compete in the WWA World Wakeboarding Series. He travelled the world for six months and at the final round in Abu Dhabi – James won the World Title. People told him that it’s always hard getting sponsored by the big board companies in the USA, but as James got off the plane from Abu Dhabi, he had four waiting to sign him. He has now been on the Slingshot international team for the last two years and gets a lot of support from his other sponsors including: Loose Kids Industries, Go Wake Cable Park, Live It Travel and Kawana Sports Care. To date, James has won three World Titles, a Junior Man WWA Wake Park Title and two Pro Men World Wakeboard Titles. James is not done there and continues to strive to be the best he can and get quite a few more achievements under his belt. So watch this space.

Liquidlife | Autumn 2015 | Page #15

James goes for a ride every day, rarely does he miss one. He said it’s not a chore; it’s something that he loves to do. One of the things he loves about wakeboarding is when he wakes up early in the morning and the water is glassy and that it’s all him out there, he is in control of everything that happens. He says there is no better feeling than landing a new trick and encourages youngsters starting out to set achievable goals and work hard to reach them. He has designed two boards for Slingshot – a 2014 and 2015 edition of the Slingshot Windsor Wakeboard. He designed the whole thing – from graphics to tips and tails. Some of the best experiences James has had in his wakeboarding career were

winning two world titles at the same time for different categories in 2012 and also being invited to the Philippines to open a new wake park. One of the Governors in the Philippines is a massive wakeboard fan and invited ten of the world’s best riders to open his park. James says it’s the best in the world; he spent three weeks there the first time he went, a month the second and flew out again last October for his third time. This last time was not only for enjoyment but also as a judge for their Nationals Titles. If you are a wakeboarder – I think this must go on the bucket list! A true Sunny Coast boy through and through, he says “I’ve been everywhere around the world but I haven’t found a place as good as the coast”.

Autumn on the Sunshine Coast is my favourite time of year. The air is fresh and clean in the wake of those life-giving wet season rains, the damp soil nourishes a lush green landscape, and the salty ocean breeze leaves a fine white powder on the Tuckeroos that line the beach front. Strengthening onshore winds take the sting out of the crippling summer heat and by April, top temperatures typically settle back to a deliciously mild 25 or 26 degrees. Autumn sustains the strongest and lengthiest southeasterly wind spells of any other season. These moisture-laden winds stir up choppy seas and large ocean swells, and they channel a steady onslaught of showers from the Coral Sea, making March typically the year’s cloudiest and wettest month. Strong wind warnings for small craft seem to be an almost weekly occurrence, making life annoying or sometimes even dangerous for recreational water sports. Sea temperatures across the Pacific are still near their peak, encouraging the formation of tropical cyclones which further delay the onset of the calmer dry season.

Autumn nights on the Sunshine Coast remain typically mild until the first southwesterly outbreak of the season, usually in early/mid May. The dry, lipcracking southwest wind puts a sharp chill into the night air and often drags the mercury down to single digits around the airport and Hinterland. With the winter solstice (longest night) only a month away and the ground still damp from April showers, May is the Sunshine Coast’s foggiest month. There’s no better set up for a paddle in a kayak than a calm misty morning over a glassy lake. All the very best for Autumn 2015!

Both surfing and kiting put a lot of stress on your neck. In both sports, the neck is required to be held in extension for a long period of the time. This requires increased muscle work for both the neck and shoulder muscles, including those that “hold the head up”. In times of fatigue or excessive force, these muscles may go into spasm, creating tension on the upper cervical (neck) region. This increased tension may mean that joints in this area may not be moving in the way they should, also limiting the movement in the neck itself. Essentially, when these muscles spasm and the joints don’t move, they refer to the head. If the neck is irritated, you may feel pain in the neck or the head. Classically, the pain will begin in the base of the neck which is normally tender, and from this point, progresses to the head. Treatment of “cervicogenic headache” generally involves removing excess muscle tension and mobilising joints to restore range of motion. Often, relief is instantaneous but if the headaches are chronic or long term, then assessment of the area of neck/shoulder blade biomechanics and posture is required. See your local physiotherapist if this sounds like you.

Sunshine Coast kids are extremely lucky to grow up along our amazing coastline. It appears that the kids on the coast are just as involved in watersports as their parents are. We asked some locals kids what they love doing on the water‌

Zoe Valencic has been hitting Mooloolaba Beach for Nippers every Sunday morning for 3 years. She loves hanging out with her friends and being involved in many events, including beach sprints, team relays, flags and more! As part of Nippers, Zoe swims 3 times a week at Mountain Creek Pool. This has really helped her ocean swimming when she swims around the cans and body surfs back to the beach. Zoe’s other favourite event is the boards. Some days, getting out through the waves can prove a little tough but riding them back into the beach is the best fun of all. Rob, the manager, helps by teaching the kids about rips and the ocean.

Scye Collen regularly heads out on the Maroochy River, jetskiing, with her big sister, Agen, and their parents. They love going for picnics along the water and they enjoy being out in the fresh air after a busy week at school. Pumistone Passage is one of their favourite spots and they also enjoy freshwater jet skiing at Lake Borumba.

Millie Meredith loves hitting the beach with her dad, Steve, to go for a paddle.

Sean Saunders enjoys sailing in various spots around the Sunshine Coast. He entered the Inter-Schools Sailing Championships recently and his Sunshine Coast Grammar School Team was the overall winner.

Bryn Mailer first started swimming at 12wks old. His mum, being a swim coach herself, had him swimming before he could walk and Bryn says he would much prefer to be able to swim where he needs to go! Bryn trains at the Noosa Aquatic Centre and competes for Noosa Swimming Club.

Noah Sellers says, “Surfing brings people together. There is a sense of community when you are sitting out the back, surrounded by people who enjoy the same things as you. Surfing is not like other sports, because every wave you catch has its unique story to tell. You will never be able to catch the exact same wave you caught earlier, and be able to hit that exact same section.

Georgia Keong has been going to weekly swimming lessons since 12 weeks old. Her parents love the ocean and want her to grow up confident and safe in the water. She absolutely loves the lessons and interacting with the other bubs, but the lessons are as much for parents as kids, helping them to feel more confident and knowing how to safely introduce very young children to closing their eyes and holding their breath under the water.

Sunshine Coast Kitesurfing Girls enjoyed a day at Cotton Tree. They were given plenty of tips from local kite instructors, worked on their basic kiting skills while others learned some new tricks. The day concluded with a barbeque and drinks together.

Swiss Ball Reverse Fly This exercise is critical as it targets some of the opposing muscles predominantly when paddling. It is important to keep the weight light when carrying out this movement, as this exercise targets the rotator cuffs.

Swiss Ball Open/ Close Book with Med. Ball This core stability movement is great for developing both abdominal muscles, and the ability to counter balance movements.

Med Ball Bodyweight Squat Finally, this movement is critical in developing lower body strength and power, particularly when modern day surfing relies so much on weight distribution through the feet (i.e. Weighting front foot/ back foot).

Stepping into the icy cold waters of Cornwall, UK awakened something within me. The feeling of the ocean, the way each paddle carried me across the surface of the water, and the way it felt to drop into a wave, really was something special. It was in my late teens when I studied for my B.Sc (Honours) in Sports Performance and Coaching, with a foundation degree in Marine Sport Science that I realised I was studying something which is my passion. However, what was clear to me was that Surf development had so much room to grow. For me, developing Surf athletes, was a huge passion. With four years as a Professional Surf Coach and six years as a professional Lifeguard under my belt, the ocean became the common denominator of everything that has provided me with so many opportunities in recent years. Having coached in the UK, Australia, France and Spain, I’ve had the opportunity to coach in a huge range of conditions. Finally, I now find myself in a position as Personal Trainer at Jetts Fitness, Maroochydore, and as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Sunshine Coast Stingrays’ Female Sevens Squad. I specialise in Sport Specific development. I’m currently working with athletes from the worlds of Surfing, Rugby, Rowing, Triathlon, Surf Lifesaving and Muay Thai. Low fat, gluten free, low GI, organic, raw, low carb, high protein, paleo... Are you feeling overwhelmed by your health improvement choices? Many current health trends have their place in advancing health, however the majority of Australians do not even have the basics right, and therefore can’t sustain these practices for the long term. In my opinion, the single biggest factor contributing to our current health crisis is the growing and alarming concentration of additives consumed every day. As a nation, we are largely time

poor and consequently, risky convenience products seem to have become our everyday staples. Whilst our hectic lifestyle demands are unlikely to change, there is no doubt that we need to take responsibility and raise personal awareness on the levels of toxic chemicals we are allowing in our diets. If you could change one thing only for improved health (and your family’s health), then this should definitely be it! Additives and added sugars confuse normal body functioning. They contribute to the many frightening

physiological, neurological and behavioural issues we are facing, and are deadening our taste buds. The more we consume, the higher our bliss point and the greater the challenge for us to return to a normal, balanced diet. To make things worse, there are so many pitfalls and loopholes in the current monitoring of additives in foods available in Australia, that consumers are largely unaware of what they are actually depositing into their bodies. To get yourself started just follow these six simple steps:

• Ignore claims such as ‘no artificial preservatives, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours’. They may be sourced naturally, but that doesn’t guarantee their safety. • A product is not organic unless it is ‘Certified Organic’. Most supermarkets have their own organic, named brands, but most are just marketing stunts. • Be wary about choosing gluten free for health. Many manufactured gluten free products are packed with harmful additives. • Limit products with oil listed as an ingredient. Some of these include biscuits, sauces, fish fingers, nuggets,

pre-packed meals, canned fish and pastries. Whist oils must be listed as a product ingredient, the additives in the oil do not have to be listed. • Choose plain biscuits, crackers and chips over the flavoured types. • Be wary of low fat. Most low fat foods are thickened and flavoured with harmful additives. To ease your confusion, I encourage you to download your free comprehensive list of ‘additives to avoid’ in the wellness library at www.nextgenerationwellness. com.au. Begin substituting your everyday foods (breads, butter, cereal, yoghurts.) with

the better alternatives, by avoiding the additives on this list. The health decisions you make today, will unequivocally affect your tomorrow. Have you got it right?
