WHY THIS GUIDE TO DUTCH JAZZ? We would like to give you a quick insight into all the Dutch acts at North Sea Jazz Festival this year. This booklet introduces you to a wide variety of promising Dutch bands and artists. You will find out The Netherlands has a lot to offer in the field of jazz. The booklet is an initiative of Buma Cultuur, InJazz and North Sea Jazz Festival. Buma Cultuur is dedicated to music and composers from The Netherlands. InJazz (formerly known as the Jazzdag) is organized with the goal to bring the jazz world, both national and international, together. It is the official kick-off of two weeks of jazz in Rotterdam followed-up by North Sea Round Town and the North Sea Jazz Festival. We hope to see you at the Dutch shows!

INJAZZ InJazz is the biggest jazz network and showcase event in the Netherlands which takes place in Rotterdam. It brings together the entire jazz sector in a dynamic setting in two days. During the day, the conference programme of InJazz is attended by professionals such as composers, musicians, representatives of national and international clubs, venues and festivals, as well as booking agencies, record labels, management companies, media and delegations from several foreign countries. At night, inJazz hosts a showcase festival with a variety of Dutch bands which is free of charge and open to the public. Also, various European jazz festivals like the EFG London Jazz Festival and Jazz sous les pommiers present promising bands from their countries at this showcase festival. Every year during inJazz the winner of the prestigious Buma Boy Edgar Prize is announced. This is the most important Dutch prize for jazz and improvised music. Recent winners are Oene van Geel (2013),
Jeroen van Vliet (2014) and Tineke Postma (2015).
www.inJazz.nl BUMA CULTUUR Buma Cultuur supports and promotes Dutch music copyright in both The Netherlands and key export markets for Dutch music. Buma Cultuur is founded by the Dutch collecting society Buma. Buma/Stemra is the collection society for music authors in The Netherlands and represents the interests of its members worldwide. www.bumacultuur.nl NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL At the world-famous North Sea Jazz Festival, the audience can enjoy the past, present and future of jazz every year for three days in Rotterdam. This year more than a thousand musicians are expected, spread out over 150 performances and thirteen different stages. www.northseajazz.com

JORIS ROELOFS ROPE DANCE LIGHT-FOOTED MUSIC FOR ALL AND NONE MODERN CREATIVE NORTH SEA JAZZ COMPOSITION PROJECT 2016
Joris Roelofs (clarinet, bass clarinet); Bram van Sambeek (bassoon); Harmen Fraanje (piano); Clemens van der Feen (bass); Martijn Vink (drums).
Each year, the North Sea Jazz Festival commissions a promising Dutch jazz composer to write a free composition. In 2016, the honour goes to clarinetist and composer Joris Roelofs. Joris Roelofs (1984) graduated at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he now is a lecturer himself. In his career he played with many musicians from all over the world. In 2003, he was the first non-American to win the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship Award. In 2011 he put together a trio with Ted Poor and Matt Penman, and recorded two albums with them. Roelofs was inspired by composers such as Debussy and Guillaume de Machaut. He hopes to unite techniques from classical and jazz music in his composition assignment, aiming to reserve space for coincidence and improvisation. Besides that, he will include powerful and dynamic melodies. FRI 8 JULY 2016 17:45 - 19:00 MADEIRA

JAMESZOO QUINTET AVANT-GARDE - ELECTRONIC
André Roligheten (tenor saxophone); Niels Broos (keyboards); Frans Petter Eldh (bass); Richard Spaven (drums); Mitchel van Dinther (electronics, machinery).
Dutchman Jameszoo only needed two songs to make a name for himself. On the EP Leaf People, released on the Kindred Spirits label, the title song which features American soul singer Coultrain, is wonderful. The second song, Slaves Mass, is more unfamiliar and a tribute to Brazilian musician Hermeto Pascoal. Jameszoo is a connoisseur of avant-garde jazz. His style can be placed somewhere between Robert Wyatt and electronic music; it’s colorful and progressive, yet chaotic and bizarre. Jameszoo has collaborated with John Coltrane’s former pianist Steve Kuhn and was able to contract the legendary Brazilian guitarist Arthur Verocai for a series of studio sessions. As a DJ he has shared the turntable with Jazzanova and Kode9. This year his songs received the enthusiastic attention of celebrated electronic hip hop producer Flying Lotus who signed him on his Brainfeeder label. FRI 8 JULY 2016 17:45 - 18:45 DARLING

Ronald Snijders (flute) Rory Ronde (guitar); Bassekou Kouyaté (n’goni); Mano Yeah (keyboards); Robert Pronk (bass); Yoran Vroom (drums); Giovanni Essed (percussion). special guests: Dwight Trible (vocals); Edmar Castaneda (harp) & Bassekou Kouyaté (n’goni)
Ronald Snijders is one of the best flutists in the Netherlands and by far the most swinging. Since he came to the Netherlands from Surinam in 1970, he has steadily built an oeuvre in which Surinam dance music, Caribbean salsa, bossa nova, funk and jazz are mixed together into unique, always danceable music. The first five (very funky) records by Snijders have become collectors’ items: much sought-after but hardly found. This inspired producers Nelson & Djosa to make the album The Nelson & Djosa Sessions. Bringing together Snijders with a.o.; Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba, Avishai Cohen, Jamire Wiliams and Ed Motta on this record. In this way they created nine scintillating new versions of Snijders’ lost songs. The recording sessions have also been chronicled in a documentary called Easy Man. MARK SCHILDERS’ FABRIK MODERN CREATIVE
Mark Schilders (guitar, drums, synthesizers); Bert Cools (guitar, electronics); Bram de Looze (piano); Thierry Castel (synthesizers).
You can truly call Rotterdam drummer and composer Mark Schilders a natural born drummer. The Dutch percussionist first sat behind a drum kit at age five and was taught by percussion legends like Amir Ziv and Jim Black at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. At a still very young age Schilders was already a member of renowned jazz groups like The New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, Reinier Baas’ More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble, Jeroen van Vliet’s Moon Trio and the Maarten Hogenhuis Trio. He also won the Princess Christina Jazz Concours (2008) and the Erasmus Jazz Prize (2011). At North Sea Jazz Schilders, who alternates between living in Rotterdam and New York, will perform his latest project Fabrik, where he improvises with his four-member band in a quest for - to him - recognizable elements in modern jazz music: song, calm, texture and groove. Her latest project is VanBinsbergen Playstation: an octet made up of leading Dutch musicians that first came together for a one-off performance at the BrokkenBal in March 2014. Afterwards, they decided to continue working as a band and in May 2015 they performed for the first time under that name at the Jazz in Duketown festival. Just as before, there are no boundaries and no stylistic restrictions just pure energy, raw and playful. The band’s CD Live was widely acclaimed. SUN 10 JULY 2016 22:00 - 23:15 MADEIRA

METROPOLE ORKEST
When you think of an orchestra, you think classical music. That’s not the Metropole Orkest. Playing jazz, pop, world, cabaret, film scores and folk, the Metropole Orkest have shared the stage with legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Brian Eno, Pat Metheny, Stan Getz, Bono and Steve Vai. The Metropole Orkest invest just as much in playing with the next generation of stars, like Antony and the Johnsons, Snarky Puppy, Laura Mvula and Gregory Porter. The Metropole Orkest has produced more than 150 albums and thousands of radio and television broadcasts, requiring over 600 arrangements per year in every imaginable style. Despite this musical versatility, people all over the world can recognise inimitable sound, style and identity of the Metropole Orkest. As the world’s leading pop and jazz orchestra, the Metropole Orkest is always looking to experiment and to be part of spectacular performances including events such as concerts in highway tunnels with Junkie XL or participation in the world’s first crowd funded opera videogame! - 24 -

Festival
Conference
23-24 June
Welcome to InJazz, a two day celebration of Dutch jazz. InJazz, formerly known as the Jazzdag, is the official and yearly kick-off of two weeks of jazz in Rotterdam followed-up by North Sea Round Town and the North Sea Jazz Festival. Located in Rotterdam, the jazz capital of the Netherlands, this network and showcase event serves as a hub for all things jazz, this year on Friday June 24 and Saturday June 25. Situated at the remarkable Kop van Zuid and Katendrecht area in Rotterdam music professionals and musicians meet at different stages in the well-known jazz venue LantarenVenster, the intimate Kantine Walhalla and for the first time at the nieuwe Luxor Theater. InJazz aims at gathering the jazz world together, both national and international. First and foremost the musicians, but also managers, programmers, radio and television makers, record label executives and of course the mass of jazz lovers.
CONFERENCE During the day, music professionals meet at LantarenVenster, where the two day conference program kicks off. Informative meetings and panel discussions will tackle new developments, challenges and opportunities. More and more foreign delegates are finding their way to InJazz and appreciate its broad approach. The popular matchmaking program takes place on both Friday and Saturday. A great way to meet other jazz professionals and musicians. Also, every year during inJazz the winner of the prestigious Buma Boy Edgar Prize is announced. This is the most important Dutch prize for jazz and improvised music. Recent winners are Oene van Geel (2013), Jeroen van Vliet (2014) and Tineke Postma (2015).
FESTIVAL At night, music lovers will be thrilled by the scintillating series of showcases. This festival programme is free of charge and open tot the public. Over 35 promising Dutch jazz acts, but also more seasoned groups, will hit the stage on Friday and Saturday night to show what they’re capable of. They hope to gain new fans and to level up their career. The next generation of jazz is attending under the moniker - surprise! - Next Generation
Jazz, rounding up the most talented master students of the Dutch conservatories. Some names of this year to remember are David Demuynck, Anouk Sanczuk and Alessio Bruno. Other attending groups this year are Kruidkoek (NL), Rohey (NO), EvenSanne (NL), Binker & Moses (UK) and the Michiel Stekelenburg Quartet (NL). A number of important European jazz festival promoters taking part in the Europeans inJazz programme have picked a remarkable jazz act from their country. It is the intention that these bands will perform at all of the European festivals in the near future, including InJazz. New this year at the inJazz festival programme is Edison Jazz/World 2016. This prestigious and international award show will be held at the nieuwe Luxor Theater on Friday night. Some of the winners of this year are the Metropole Orkest, CĂŠcile McLorin Salvant and the Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet.
2017 Will we see you next year at inJazz? In 2017 this biggest jazz network and showcase event in the Netherlands will be hosted on Friday 23 June and Saturday 24 June in Rotterdam. More information: www.inJazz.nl Contact: info@inJazz.nl
