Booking out Dartfish You must book out the Dartfish kit if you want to use it in a lesson. A paper-based form has been created for this purpose and this can be found in the IT Support Office or the PE Office. Dartfish TeamPro is only available for use on the Toshiba Laptop. This is the fully featured version of Dartfish. We have a cut down version called Dartfish Classroom. There are currently 15 licenses available for Dartfish Classroom and this has been installed on the school network.

Make sure you have: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Dartfish laptop (Toshiba) Tripod for video camera and laptop (if required) Video camera Extension lead and Firewire cable

Remember: • •

Dartfish only works with certain Video Cameras (DV) and thus will not work with the Sony HD Cameras around school. The Firewire cable used on a laptop is a different connection to those used on a PC. We have both available.

Laptop password is dartfish

Setting Up •

InTheAction Introduction There are 3 main uses of the ‘InTheAction’ mode: • • •

Stream live from the video camera Live delay, so that the live stream can be delayed for a set duration Record instantly from the camera to laptop

Remember: •

If you want to stream live or record instantly, you will need a power cable for the video camera. This mode will not work with the battery in place.

Getting Started 1. Once all the equipment is setup, launch the Dartfish application. 2. Click the 'InTheAction' button on the top menu bar 3. If two black panes appear, it means there is no video source and that something isn't connected correctly. Check all the cables and then click 'InTheAction'.

Live View Live View is the first button in the InTheAction pane. After following the 'Getting Started' instructions above, you should now see the Live View. You should see exactly what the camera sees. You can use the drawing tools on the right hand side (refer to drawing tools in this guide).

Live Delay The Live Delay button is to the right of the Live View button. Clicking the Live Delay button will delay the video stream for a set duration. You can change this duration to better suit your lesson but going to options -> InTheAction -> and changing the live delay time to whatever is appropriate. 45 to 60 seconds is usually enough time.

Recording Live When you are in live view you can record the footage. To do this you can click the record button underneath the live video. You can again change the recording duration the same way as changing the live delay. Click options - > InTheAction -> and then change the record duration. You'll notice then when you are recording you cannot see the live view video.

Playback There are a set of basic controls underneath the video will allow you to play, stop pause, rewind or fast-forward. Next to these controls is a bar with 0, 0.25, .05 and 1 labelled. This allows you to slow down the video play to half or quarter speed.

Organising Videos Renaming Appropriate Filenames When you record a clip via ‘InTheAction’ mode, it automatically saves it to the hard drive and will be placed in the ‘tray’ (bottom left of screen). To help keep videos organised, you can rename each clip. Perhaps calling the clip the name of the person or technique is a good idea. For example: Amy – Seat Drop

Categorising Clips – Creating Categories and Values Once in the player view, select the ‘Categories’ button. Underneath are the categories listed, and under each category are ‘values’. You can create new categories or values by right clicking in the categories pane.

Video Analysis Introduction The Analyzer mode is available on both Dartfish TeamPro and Dartfish Classroom. This allows you to use advanced tools to analyse video clips in more details.

Trimming You will want to trim videos for two reasons: • •

Cut out any unwanted footage Reduce file size

Trimming a video is very easy and is simply a matter of selecting a ‘Set In’ and ‘Set Out’ point and then saving. To do this, you must make sure you are in the Analyzer mode. Double click on a video so that it in is in the Analyser window. Drag the cursor to the point in the video you want it to start at.

Select ‘Set In’ once you’ve moved the cursor.

Next you will need to do the same but select ‘Set Out’. Your timeline should look something like the following. The lighter shade of grey is the part of the video that will be saved and the darker shade of grey is the part of the video that will be deleted.

Once you have set these two points, next you need to save it. Simply click on File - > Save Movie and then follow the wizard settings.

Multi-Screen Mode / Blend Mode The analyzer view allows you to use multi-screen mode. This simply means that you view 2, 3 or 4 videos at once. This is great for comparison. You can also use blend mode, which simply displays one video on top of the other.

Single-screen mode

Multi-screen mode

Blend mode

Each letter represent a video screen – with A and B select, two videos will be shown. With A, B, C and D selected, 4 will be shown.

Once you have selected multi-screen mode, simply drag in a video to fill the space as shown below:

Pressing play will play both videos at the same time.

Quick Magnify The quick magnify tool is great for quickly zooming on a specific point when the video is paused. To use this simply select the zoom tool on the left menu and then select the quick magnify tool. Simply move the cursor over the video. Quick Magnify tool

Flip Horizontal / Vertical Occasionally you will need to flip a video, especially if you are trying to compare two videos that are facing different directions. This is really easy to fix however. On the left hand side, underneath the Zoom and Move tool, click on either the flip horizontal of flip vertical buttons.

Key Positions A key position is a still image of a key moment in a video. You can easily navigate through key positions by clicking on the corresponding thumbnails. To do this: 1. Move the play head to the position you wish to highlight. 2. Click on the Add Key Position button.

A new key position appears with its default label underneath.

To add other key positions, repeat the two steps above.

Drawing Tools Introduction Drawing tools can help you analyse a video. Below is the drawing toolbar:

Highlighter Pencil Text Image Marker, line, spline

Time, distance, angle

Clone rectangle

Rectangle / Oval Silhouette Horizontal and vertical lines

On some of the icons is a small black triangle. This simply means there are more tools in that group. Right click on the icon and a small drop down will allow you to select more tools as shown on the right.

Clone Tool The clone rectangle is used to enlarge a certain part of a video. Simply click on the clone tool icon and then drag it on the area of the video that you wish to enlarge. You can then move and resize both rectangles.

Measuring Angles The angle tool can be selected by right clicking on the distance tool and selecting angle as shown below.

To use the angle tool, drag a line by holding down the left mouse button and then move the angle round and click again. It will automatically give you the angle degrees as shown below:
