Fifth Year: Thesis Study

Urban Stitch This bridge serves to weave two paths together: that of the vehicle and that of the pedestrian. In doing so, two disconnected parts of Newport News, Virginia are brought back together. The weaving concept is derived from the need to integrate and interpenetrate the given landscape and also provide a symbolic form for the city. The presence of the bridge extends well past its physical boundaries and into the neighborhoods on either side. This provides a gateway to the path across the highway and an introduction to the language of the bridge. The pedestrian zone weaves in and around the vehicular zones, creating a cohesive yet delineated relationship to the car. This provides ample space for multipurpose uses such as shopping, dining, exercise, and cultural exhibitions. In this way the bridge becomes both a path and a destination that each side of Newport News can share.
