Largo da Paz, in Bairro da Ajuda, is composed by small-scaled parcels and it is also characterized by two-storey houses. These parcels are usually occupied in two areas: the built one and the garden. Due to the reduced area of the lot, the built area and the garden were thought as a whole. Thinking in the garden as a continuation of the house this space became a courtyard. As the project developed this area was fragmented in three, creating two spaces in the ground floor and one in a lower level. More than simple courtyards, they became three additional rooms to the house. Since the program was very restrained, it was created a set of full and empty – built area and courtyards – in both floors and along the whole length of the building. The placement of only one courtyard in the basement floor results of the necessity of including in the program a space of large dimensions – an atelier – which did not share the same circulation area with the social area of the house. This particular space was a requirement of the client, a plastic artist named Daniel Barroca. In the ground floor, we can see that the house is organised along a corridor that works as a distributive space for all the house rooms. Due to the courtyards, beyond the physical relationship originated by the corridor, also exists a constant visual relationship between all the spaces of each floor. 08

travessa baluarte building MULTI-FAMILY HOUSE, COMMERCE, OFFICES, ART GALERY AND AUDITORIUM Lisbon, Portugal Arquitectura V e VI | 3rd year | ISCTE-IUL | 2009 Tutorship: Arch. Pedro Mendes

The project is located in the Avenida 24 de Julho, in Alcântara, an area profoundly marked by the different functions that we can find there – mostly residential and industry –. Since the beginning this project aimed to establish a mid point between these two distinct realities. The existence of two different levels in the parcel led the project to adapt to the lot morphology, in an attempt to make them inseparable. We can see this more clearly in the volume occupied by the art gallery and the auditorium. The northern part of the building starts to receive the highest level of the lot and it continues gradually developing its height until it reaches the Avenida 24 de Julho. Given the inexistence of green areas in Alcântara, the localization of the residential building aimed the creation of two large squares, one to the north with a more private character and another to the south which could also serve as reception area of the art gallery. The initial intention of the apartments was to create a strict barrier between its private and public areas. Their module is an apartment with four bedrooms whose central element is the living and dining rooms that are combined in the same space that allows it to touch both facades and also with the upper level through a mezzanine. In this project were also explored the apartments with one, three and five bedrooms. 14

setubal station BUS AND TRAIN STATION, COMMERCE, BAR, RESTAURANT Setubal, Portugal Projecto de Arquitectura I e II | 4th year | ISCTE-IUL | 2010 Tutorship: Arch. Pedro Botelho

The project for the Setubal Bus and Train Station is part of a program to revitalize the area occupied by the current Train Station of the same city. The study area varies widely in altimetry that results, not only from the morphology of the land itself, but also from the current position of the railways. Right from the start became a premise of the project to create links between all these levels and, at the same time, was drawn a plan to revitalize this piece of the city, where the presence of green areas allows the break of the existing constructive density in Setubal. One of the major concerns of this project was the circulation system of this area of the city that was clearly obsolete. This issue was solved by the addition of new streets that combined formed a hierarchic system. The form of the building results from the initial desire of connecting the three different levels of the lot - 8.4, 14.4 and 24.2 –. The lowest volume is parallel to Estrada dos Ciprestes and the upper one develops itself parallel to the Travessa dos Trabalhadores. The building with north-south orientation ensures the accesses to the train level and this area is illuminated through skylights with large dimensions. The building of Setubal Station ensures the horizontal and vertical circulations, in the interior and exterior spaces, trying to recreate, through an architectonic object, the city’s circulation. 22

haiti , back to square one URBAN PLANNING Leogane, Haiti

Leogane was one of the most battered cities by the earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, having assisted to the destruction of 90% of its buildings. Given that 65% of the Haitian population lives below the absolute poverty line, the reconstruction plan of the city should take into account not only the construction of the buildings, but also a plan the insures a gradual growth where the population would have a key role in development. The urban planning of the new piece of the city aims to maintain the existing lines before the earthquake and it begins with the definition of two distinct types of streets: one for vehicles and another one for pedestrians. One of the existing elements that had a major role in defining the territory was the National Street because it has a key role in the local commercial trades. Due to its importance and dimensions, this street has a central placement in the new urban plan and had a specific treatment allowing it to belong to that city. Haiti is a country with a tropical climate and in its territory there is a high chance of occurring earthquakes and hurricanes. To prevent another massive destruction, the new buildings were elevated 40 cm from the ground level, they would have windows in opposing facades, in order to facilitate the buildings’ ventilation, and this new constructions were also provided with shading systems. The materials applied must be from local productions to decrease the cost of the project. Taking in consideration the extreme poverty lived in Leogane, it is intended that the construction of dwellings results of a collaboration between the Government, companies, specialized institutions and the local population. In an early stage, the pluming and water distribution would only be made attached to a sanitary block placed in the centre of each block, but inside the houses was also designed a space that, in the future, could be occupied by a private wc. One of the initial objectives was to make the population self-sufficient; therefor land blocks were created to allocate agricultural activities, which vary in size and in private or public character. 32

Saint Vicent de Paul’s complex, in Leogane, witnessed, as the rest of the city, to its destruction during the earthquake of 2010. This project concept is “city within the city” based on the interpretation of the word city as an area where we can find answers to our daily needs. In this complex we can find: a church, a school, a kindergarten, a nursery home, a clinic, a nuns residence and a large area for agricultural land. Despite all of these functions chare the same space, it was not intended that they had a relationship too close in their daily life, so each of the functions have their own exterior area allowing them to have their personal identity. As the main roles of the Saint Vicent de Paul’s complex are the nursery home and the school, these were the most developed areas. The nursery home is constituted by three volumes – two of them are occupied by the rooms and living rooms, while in the third one has the kitchen and the dining area –. In these buildings there are twenty-four bedrooms, each of them with maximum capacity of five people and a private wc. Twelve rooms are prepared for wheelchair users. Concerning the school, the buildings are placed in order to create a central courtyard that can also be used by the kindergarten children. The school is constituted by ten classrooms, a library, administration rooms’ and also a canteen. In all the complex buildings’ a correct ventilation is assure through openings, in opposite sides of the building, that allow to open the entire facade in width and height. 40

braubachstrasse 25 HOTEL Frankfurt, Germany 5th year | TUD | 2011 Tutorship: Arch. SIA/BSA Meinrad Morger

The Dom-Römer-Areal is one of the oldest areas of Frankfurt and this project belongs to its reconstruction program, as a result, the history of the building became an important element. One of its historical particularities was to have worked, together with the building adjacent to its façade – Esslinger building –, as a hotel. Since the Esslinger building is going to be reconstructed faithfully, it was decided that the baroque facade existing in the 25th lot, was also going to be built. In this hotel, the public areas are communicant spaces with each other, from floor to floor, and the private areas – the bedrooms – live on their own. The ground floor and the first floor of the hotel – the only floors where there are no bedrooms – are visually connected through a mezzanine placed in the center of the building. This void is balanced with the lantern in the sixth floor. There are simplex and duples rooms but all of them, until the fifth floor, form a central cross where we can find the vertical accesses and also the lounge areas, which vary their placement from floor to floor. Organised in three areas – closet, bedroom and wc – in all the hotel bedrooms’ was given prominence to the resting area that was separated from the rest of the functions through a wooden panel. 48

These house facades are divided between a small-scaled residential street with no way out and an avenue that connects the Carcavelos village and the beach. Besides a garden with large dimensions, which allows creating different areas in the outside, this building also has a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean, from the terrace. This house had some thermal problems due to the lack of thermal insulation and also the lack of shading in the big openings oriented to south and west. The external thermal insulation, some openings that where closed and three shading elements, that were added to the building, gave him a new architectonic identity. A garage was also planned, a pure volume, that touches with one of its facades the existing building and ensures a covered access between the volume the garage and the kitchen. This volume has its roof in gravel that works as a visual extension of the south balcony until the east limit of the parcel. 58

This Parking is part of a rehabilitation project for Ilha de Tavira and this particular building, as well as the rest, respect the same formal language. Having a simple shape result of pure volumes and a single opening on the west façade, it is the coating that gives it a surprising inner life. This coating is also used in the rest of the buildings, creating a white oasis between the beach and the Ilha de Tavira forest. This building is intended to accommodate the transport that each of the local companies use to transport themselves and their goods through the island. Thus, besides the parking area divided by wooden partitions that compose twelve parking lots, in the interior of this building we can only find a cabinet for some counters. 66

The exhibition “Interiores 1900-1999” is a retrospective of the Portuguese Contemporary Design and Interior Architecture, and it is organised in distinct spaces dedicated to each decade of the twentieth century. The light has a prominent role in this exhibition, being the element that allows us to distinguish the different spaces with its contact with suspended curtains. The contact between these two elements reveals, in the textile, spaces that contextualize the exhibits pieces. The presence of this suspended textiles, likewise embracing the displayed objects, are the main element along the exhibition, guiding the visitor until the end. Taking advantage of the existing spaces besides the spaces correspondent to the decades represented in the exhibition, were also created peepshows where were presented slideshows, panoramas were built and films were projected. The execution of the film intends to recreate the environment originated by the contact between the light, textiles, displayed objects and the public itself, whose simple movement along the exhibition creates alterations in it. paris market lab COOKING SCHOOL AND RESTAURANT Paris, France Competition organized by : Archmedium | 2012 Project developed with: Eva Florindo

Located in the heart of Paris, a few steps away from the Saint-German Market, the building emerges as a new attractive point of this area, not only for its gastronomy program, but also for the building itself. Respecting its ancient history, the Market Lab conciliates the contemporary technologies and materials while creating a balance between the old and the new. The project maintains the upper facades and the typology of the existing building with an interior patio that connects all the spaces, bringing light and creating visual relations between all different divisions. The removal of the building´s ground floor facade, replaced by a glass wall, opened a new perspective to the street, allowing visibility to the interior space, defined by public functions. The location of the bar in this floor also brings a new life to the square on the north part of the building. The inner space tries to recreate the ambience of the Saint-German Market interiors into the building, mainly through its color. The corten steel also reflects this allusion by creating a rhythm on the ceilings that spreads into the new facades. The patio is the heart of the building, around which the main program is distributed, creating a fluid space and allowing the salons to always have a part with visual contact to the kitchen. The Market Lab pays a tribute to the history that surrounds it and simultaneously initiates a new stage of its life. 76

Although it is not an architecture masterpiece, Fábrica do Cavalinho, due to its circunstancial beauty and its own identity in the city’s industrial traditions, it is an important document of Guimarães history. Maintaining its identifying features allows the preservation of the place’s memory, giving it a new density. This proposal intends to give a new life to past, inserting it in the new sociocultural dynamics of the city, either through the planned program or a reconciliation of a new creative language. The existing building consolidates itself as a container of its historical and anthropological character, but also through a new present with new uses and aesthetics. In addiction to the global rehabilitation and constructive, architectonic and environmental recovery, it is proposed a preservation of structures and existing spaces, when the new uses allow it. From the complex the street that connects (and separates) the two existing volumes, represents not only the special centre of the entire composition but it also is the only element that connects with Av. D. Afonso Henriques, guiding the visitors through the interior of Fábrica do Cavalinho. As a result, this street assumes a major role in this proposal from where the entire program develops, freeing the east façade from accesses. The major architectural interventions consists on the refurbishment of the east and west facades, of the main volume. Inspired in the existing east façade, three voids were created there which allows the sunlight to come in and the possibility of a visual connection between the visitor and the interior of the building. In order to allow, not only a closer coexistence between the main building and the interior street but also to bring more light into it, it was proposed to demolish the west façade, exposing the building’s structure, only covered by a skin of distended steel. These interventions allow the assertion of a new urban image of Fabrica do Cavalinho. 82
