DRIVER’S LICENCE

NOV 2018 . Category A, A1, A2 OCT 2005 . Category B, B1

ABOUT ME I'm an architect. In 2012, after completing my academic degree and curricular internship, I created my own architectural office in Portugal, where I've been working ever since. Over the last 12+ years, I've acquired extensive knowledge in architectural and urban planning projects. I've developed building techniques for new construction and rehabilitation in different types of spaces and buildings (housing, social services, hotels, urban planning, etc.). Over the years I've worked on several construction licenses, detail and execution projects, measurements and quotes, monitoring and supervision of work, client management and architectural consultancy for land and building registers. I also acquired good communication skills with clients, and project and construction teams. I believe the key to success is a cooperative effort, motivation and dialogue between the various parties involved, from the project to the construction work. I believe that good architecture can have a very positive impact on society and people's life quality, in the regeneration and sustainability of buildings and cities, in clever resources management, in the preservation and promotion of culture, in comfort and safety, and in people's lives. So I always give my best in everything I do, seeing each project as an opportunity to improve the world. I'm easy to adapt to and learn from. I enjoy new challenges and am open and available to move around for new experiences in the field of architecture and construction. I consider it an enriching experience to have contact with other countries, other cultures, other ways of building...

HOUSE FREIRE DOS SANTOS On a farm near Vila Pouca de Aguiar, among some existing buildings, we found the ruin of a house at the southern end of the property, facing another ruined building on the neighbouring field. The ruin to be rehabilitated was an old stone house with two floors and an outdoor patio to the south, with an implantation area of 209 m². After a few visits to the site, and based on the desired housing programme, I began to define the fundamental ideas for the project: Keeping practically all the stone walls, as they are part of the house's history, opting for a solution of insulation from the inside, keeping the granite of some walls exposed; Working on the exterior patio and its relationship with the interior of the house, since it was the only source of light to the south; Use materials that establish a visual harmony with the existing stone, such as wood, glass, concrete, steel and the white of the new plaster cladding and partitions. The ground floor would be spacious and with as few rooms as possible, dedicated to the common areas of the house and services, such as the entrance hall, the kitchen, the lounge, a small games room, the laundry room and, separating the entrance hall from the

kitchen, we would have a volume that does not touch the ceiling to include the service toilet and storeroom. On the upper floor there was a private living room and 3 bedrooms with associated bathrooms. For each bedroom, a suspended outdoor balcony was created by designing a self-supporting piece of cor-ten steel, forming a kind of portico anchored to the exterior stone masonry walls. The staircase is the element that connects the ground floor lounge to the first floor mesanine room. The rehabilitation project resulted in a spacious house, full of light, with a contemporary language characterised by some elements from the past, such as the stone walls, the patio and the openings. In terms of the exterior fittings, thought was given to the space around the house. A swimming pool was designed, as well as a living space around it, using wood and stone left over from the reconstruction work. A new pedestrian access was also created next to the house by designing a colour-ten steel piece that includes an entrance gate and boxes for meters and mail.

02. HOUSE REHABILITATION . CASA EM VILA CHA

HOUSE IN VILA CHÃ In the centre of the village of Vila Chã there was an uninhabited house with some ruined buildings associated with it, which the client wanted to renovate. It was a traditional construction, similar to the surrounding buildings, but with different interventions from different times. It was made up of two adjacent volumes, each with two floors and floor elevations that differed by 90 cm. The southernmost volume was made of granite masonry. Further north, the taller volume, with more recent interventions, was made of plastered brick masonry. The rehabilitation project endeavoured to maintain the identity and history of the building, preserving some of its characteristics, such as the granite masonry, the volumes (2 levels), the ruins, some openings and the type of ceramic tile roof. Taking into account the constraints of the site and the intended programme, an intervention strategy was defined to meet the new needs, creating a wide, functional interior space with ample natural light. The project resulted in a very scenographic house, with different environments (some more spacious and open, others more private) and with openings framing different landscapes. Inside, there is also a strong relationship between the various interior spaces through openings and circulation space.

The staircase is a fundamental piece that connects the two volumes that make up the house. It appears almost as a sculptural piece, defining vertical access and organising the surrounding spaces on each floor. In terms of the housing programme, the lower level of the ground floor includes a storage space with direct access to the street, a small bedroom, a complete bathroom and a small foyer with access to the patio. On the upper level of the same floor we have a large space in the entrance area (which can be used as a lounge), completely open to the outside patio through a glazed opening. There's also a small room next to the main entrance and the laundry/machine room against an existing excavated rock that forms part of its exterior wall. On the first floor, on the lowest level, we have the open-plan kitchen and living room area, associated with a suspended outdoor balcony in reinforced concrete, facing the western landscape. On the upper level of the first floor we have a service toilet, an office with a view of the staircase and kitchen through an interior doorway and a view of the landscape through a doorway facing the balcony. We also have two bedrooms, each with a dressing room, bathroom and balcony. In terms of outdoor space, new access routes to the house were created in the rear area, through the existing ruins. The stone ruin next to the house gives way to a patio that establishes some privacy from the street and neighbouring buildings.

18

CENTRO SOCIAL PAROQUIAL PADRE SEBASTIAO ESTEVES VILA POUCA DE AGUIAR Centro Social e Paroquial Padre Sebastião Esteves de Vila Pouca de Aguiar [CSPPSEVPA] is a Private Institution of Social Solidarity [IPSS], created in Vila Pouca de Aguiar at the end of the 1980s by the parish priest of those times, with the aim of responding to a need of those days: a crèche. Later, in 2005, the building was extended to include another service for children and teenagers, specifically Free Time Activities [ATL]. It was recently realised that the building was no longer able to meet the current needs of a crèche, as it did not satisfy the requirements set out in the most recent legislation for this type of service. In addition, the ATL was no longer in demand as other activities for young people and teenagers emerged, such as sport, music, dance and others. It was therefore imperative to rehabilitate the CSPPSEVPA building in order to maintain the crèche service and at the same time expand its capacity to the maximum number of users required. Considering the size of the building, it was also decided to add new functions and thus respond to other new social needs in the municipality, such as an Occupational Activities Centre [CAO]. This would require an almost total reconfiguration of the building in order to create all the spaces needed to run this social facility. A preponderant factor in the project was the low budget limit, which meant that as much of the building's existing structures as possible were kept, and that all the spaces and compartments that could be used for the same or new functions were maintained. As such, the refurbishment of this building had some constraints, however, This intervention involved some demolition to allow for the construction of new spaces, as well as the creation of new structures and infrastructures, in order to fulfil current requirements

for this type of social service. The rehabilitation project focused more on the interior of the building, especially on organising the space and improving functionality, comfort and accessibility. The aim was to include new functional spaces and reorganise/adapt existing spaces, based on functionality, accessibility and circulation, the comfort and environment of the various rooms, as well as the articulation between them. In terms of the proposed spatial organisation, the various functional areas of the Parish Social Centre are distributed across the three main volumes that make up the building: The central volume is intended for the reception areas, the CAO's lounge and the kitchen, bar, canteen and laundry services. It is through this central volume that the building is accessed, particularly through the main entrance and/or service entrance. The east volume, meanwhile, includes the daycare centre, administrative services (technical offices and meeting rooms), toilets and changing rooms, as well as a multipurpose room. The institution's administrative services area is on the ground floor. On the first floor was the nursery with 2 activity rooms, 1 playroom with a nursery, milk cup and hygiene area, adequate sanitary facilities and a teacher's room. The multipurpose room remained in the basement, with remodelled sanitary facilities and storage spaces. The west volume of the building, due to its good sun exposure and connection to the outside space, housed the spaces intended for the CAO, namely activity rooms, sanitary facilities and AVD (Activities of Daily Living, similar to a one-bedroom flat).

04. HOUSE CONSTRUCTION . CASA EM S. MARTINHO

HOUSE IN S. MARTINHO PRE-EXISTENCE

The house proposed for Rua de S. Martinho will take the place of an existing residential building, built in the 1950s, with two floors. The lower floor, in the basement, is used for a cellar and storage, with a ceiling height of less than 2.00 metres, and the upper floor is used for living space, comprising a kitchen, living rooms, a bathroom and some bedrooms, access corridors and outside balconies. There is also an attached building, located on the highest level of the land, consisting of a single floor, which will also be demolished.

PROPOSED VOLUMETRY The property is irregularly shaped and has a steep natural slope in an east-west direction, with a difference of around 4.50 metres between the lowest and highest levels. The proposed building is located in the centre, coinciding with the pre-existence of the house to be demolished, and will consist of two overlapping volumes. In plan, the ground floor has an irregular trapezoidal shape that results from 2 axes: one coinciding with the extension of an existing wall, and the other parallel to the eastern boundary of the property. The upper floor has a rectangular shape, placed parallel to the wall that delimits the land to the east, aligned with one of the faces of the floor below. As for the exterior façade and floor coverings, natural finish materials were chosen, such as Nordic pine thermowood, grey wood-cement composite panels (VIROC), glass in black lacquered aluminium frames, exposed concrete and local granite.

HOUSING PROGRAMME On the ground floor we have the common areas of the house (kitchen, dining room and living room), service areas (laundry, toilet and pantry), garage and machine room. The common living spaces are contained in a single compartment, with a direct connection to the outside through a full-length glazed opening. On this floor there is also a patio that allows natural light and ventilation for the laundry room and engine room, which are in underground areas. On the first floor we have the house's private spaces, namely the office, bedrooms and bathrooms. All the bedrooms have an outside balcony and large glazed windows to make the most of the natural light and enjoy the views over the village of Pedras Salgadas. The office has a direct relationship with the outdoor garden space via the terrace to the north. As for the exterior, it was proposed to use granite cubes to pave the area around the house on the ground floor and an access ramp on the upper level, to the east of the house. On the upper floor, the patio will be landscaped with grass and tree species.

05. HOUSE CONSTRUCTION . CASA EM VIEIRA DO MINHO

28

HOUSE IN VIEIRA DO MINHO The land available to build the house had some constraints, especially in terms of accessibility and morphology. In order to build the house, it would be necessary to excavate the cliff in order to widen the access road to the property. On the other hand, after the earth movements needed to set up the building, it would be necessary to consolidate the land with retaining walls, guaranteeing the stability of the land and the buildings. In terms of the residential programme, the plan was to build a house with 4 bedrooms facing east, and a communal space consisting of a kitchen, living room, office and services, connected to the outside space (garden, swimming pool and barbecue) through large glazed openings. A support building for a garage and storage was also planned. The project focused above all on the design and shaping of the site, with an emphasis on the retaining walls as an organising element for the living space and the garden and circulation spaces (pedestrian and car). In order to overcome the approximately 10 meters of height in relation to the road, it was decided to propose retaining walls on 3 levels, integrating a large part of the living space on the 2 upper levels, thus diluting the housing programme in the landscape through 'habitable walls'. The first level of the retaining walls redefines the access road, making it about 2

metres wider, and integrates a new pedestrian access to the property, next to a small pre-existing stone house. The second level, with its more rectilinear design, integrates the house's private living space, intended for bedrooms and bathrooms, with views to the east. Highlighting the second level is a minimalist, white, gabled volume with a rectangular plan orientated east-west, with the largest glazed opening facing south. In this volume we have the common space of the house in the centre, comprising the kitchen, living/dining rooms and office, and on the sides the support spaces, such as the pantry, laundry, toilets and vertical access to the lower floor. To the east is the office with a complete associated installation, which could easily be adapted into a bedroom. To the west is the kitchen, with a connection to the outdoor barbecue area and access to the garage. The dining room and living room are in the centre, with views to the south over the pool and garden. The third level of the walls is further back, at the level of the white volumetry, and integrates the support spaces, namely the car garage, storage, barbecue and service toilet. All the spaces integrated into the granite masonry retaining walls have a flat, landscaped roof, emphasising only the walls, which are also façades. The roof of the white body is sloping and has a similar finish to the façades of this volume, also in white.

HOUSE IN CIMO DO POVO

The site available for construction is located at the top of the village of Cidadelha de Aguiar, on the western slope. It is an unbuilt plot of land with a steep slope from west to east, with a difference of around 25 metres between the lowest and highest levels. Given the characteristics of the land, it was decided to create a levelled platform, in a quadrangular format, which would allow the residential building to be built and, at the same time, create levelled outdoor spaces around the house for circulation and permanence (including the swimming pool area).

The natural morphology of the terrain made it possible to exploit the volumetry of the quadrangular platform in order to incorporate the outdoor swimming pool and a basement for the garage and technical pool area. On top of the platform rises the volumetry for the single-storey house, with a U-shaped plan, giving rise to a central patio facing the eastern landscape. The central space of the "U" has been given the common areas of the house. In this central area of the house we have the main entrance and a small associated volume, in which we have a service toilet and pantry. Then there is a large space that includes the kitchen, dining room and living room. This central space has a large exterior opening, orientated towards the east/south quadrant, with views of the patio, swimming pool and surrounding landscape. In the side wings of the "U" we have the house's private spaces, the garage and the laundry room. The north side wing includes the garage and the master suite (bedroom and bathroom). The south side includes a laundry room and machine room, next to the main hall, and two more suites, comprising a bedroom and bathroom. The building is accessed from the west via the main access door or the garage.

In the development of the project, the minimalist concept was explored in the design of the building, favouring pure, rectilinear forms, design and light colours, functionality between the various spaces, the absence of decorative elements, glazed surfaces that allow good natural light inside and a relationship with the outside. Natural materials with high resistance and low maintenance were proposed for the exterior façades and floors, opting for local granite and exposed concrete. A flat, landscaped roof was proposed for the roof of the house, fitting in with the surrounding green forest landscape.

The outdoor space surrounding the building has a path that connects the main access to the west with the secondary access to the south, allowing road traffic to circulate around the platform where the house stands. The rest of the patio is intended for cultivation and garden areas, adapted to the morphology of the land and in accordance with the intention of the owners.
