MARCIS KALNINS

marcis.kaln@gmail.com

Hello!

Through my experience working and traveling I have come to a deep belief of the most important aspect to keep in mind when designing a project of any scale. It is first to think about the experience of the people who are using it. And with that in mind find the right result through context, functionality and simplicity. marcis.kaln@gmail.com

During my architecture studies at the Riga Technical University one of the things I enjoyed was working in teams with other students. That is why I participated in many inter-university workshops (also wining first and second prizes) and two international EASA (European Architecture Students Assembly) summer schools in Finland and Spain. Erasmus exchange in Vienna University of Technology further fueled my love for learning the views towards architecture in other parts of the world.

MARCIS KALNINS

Organization of the surrounding space has interested me since I remember myself. As a small child some of my favorite days were when with the help of my parents I could again reorder the furniture and layout of my room. That is why inevitably my way later went to architecture school.

I was lucky to be able to work and gain valuable practical experience before, during and after my studies. Before and during the first year of studies I worked at architecture firm KUBS which was among the largest and leading architecture offices in Latvia. There along with the basics of architecture I saw the importance of setting a high level of execution and attention to every detail. Later during and after studies for two and a half years I had a chance to work with a renowned Latvian architect at his office BPB. With 2-4 people in the office working directly with the architect I was able to learn all the specifics of a project from beginning to the end. I worked on projects from interiors and private housing to urban developments and many international competitions. Through all phases of the projects. Just after getting architects diploma I made an internship in Rotterdam for half a year in architecture office BOARD. It was a young, dynamic, fast paced international team of architects. This experience was very inspiring and taught me to work on an international level. Here also I had the opportunity to work on the Grand Paris Systèmes MÊtropolitains project which introduced me to the city of Paris where I have moved now.

02

My name is Marcis Kalnins and I am an architect coming from Latvia currently living in Paris, France. For the past year and a half I have been working as a freelance architect on personal projects and collaborating with other architects and architecture offices, plus managing my personal furniture company. This has taught me to work well independently and has given a very valuable and thorough look at the whole deeper process of creating architecture outside of the designing itself. Now I am highly motivated to find an architecture office in Paris where I could apply all my experience on a whole new level.

Teika, Riga, Latvia Graduation project Professor Aldis Lapins Full project, research, design, graphic materials, models, presentations 01/2013

Well developed and attractive cultural infrastructure is an important sustainable resource for a city. Historically most of the cultural activities had been concentrating in the city centres. But it is very important to direct and develop these centres also in local communities outside of the centres to support development and growth of a city. This is a proposal for one such area of Teika in Riga.

A music school is expanding and requires new premises which would be combined with the existing building. The school is located just at the edge of a forest with a part of it inside the plot. Paris, France At BOARD architecture office with STAR Strategies + Architecture Research, highly detailed collages 09/2013

 While being members of the Scientific Committee of the AIGP - Atelier International du Grand Parisin the framework of “Systèmes Métropolitains”, this project with a help of striking collages tells an allegorical story of how Paris became greater, but eventually had to die to save the Grand Paris.

The story along with the collages were also combined into a 30 min video and a book.

The famous Jour de Pluie in the suburbs

The story starts with a myth: “Just before the birth of Paris, his mother dreamt that she gave birth to a burning torch. This dream was interpreted as a prophecy of the fall of the city. The child would become the ruin of his homeland and therefore had to be killed to save the kingdom The myth is continued into a story about a parallel universe where Paris evolved through a different path than in our reality. Through various episodes in the life of Paris using exaggerated allegories with existing problems and real life events we see the struggles of the city and its people. And how the city of Paris through its death makes way for something greater than it the Grand Paris.

A Grand Ensamble with a royal garden

All of this is accompanied by large amount of fantastic collages of the city of Paris, its architecture, famous artworks and maps.
