Nardella’s estate stretches across the lush countryside of San Severo - Foggia, north of the sunny "Alto Tavoliere" of Apulia. The Nardella family business took its first steps in 1940, thanks to a strong "farming passion", and the entrepreneurial skills of "Nonno Michele", grandfather of Michele and Angelo Nardella, the current owners. Currently Nardella’s cellar is a technically advanced winery for processing and bottling located in the small village of Boschetto. It includes almost 20 hectares of fine vineyards, mostly located on the surrounding hills.

The main grape varieties include “Bombino Bianco”, a local ancient white variety, the native “Nero di Troia” and the internationally grown “Pinot Noir”.

Participating with Promosiena The family wine business was founded in 1938, in one of the most beautiful corners of Italy: Monte Cetona, in the heart of the green hills and vineyards of the Tuscan area of Valdichiana. Today, Barbanera stands for a dynamic and modern operation focused on export to Europe and beyond. Initially concentrated only on wines from Tuscany, the growing demand in recent years for wines from other Italian regions such as Puglia and Sicily has led to a broadening of the range of wines offered as well as a constant process of updating the winery’s technology. As a result and complementing Barbanera’s own lines such as Duca di Saragnano and Barbanera itself, the wines and their packaging can now be tailor-made to suit the customer’s needs. As part of the process of targeting new markets and new trade sectors, the company has also achieved certification in the principal organizational quality control systems: ISO, IFS and BRC. The Barbanera wines regularly win the highest awards in international competitions.

Contact Person: Francesca Bonfadini E-mail: francesca@bonfadini.it

Region: Lombardy In 1956, Giovanni Bonfadini, a winemaker in Franciacorta, started the Bonfadini winery. In 1993, Graziano, one of Giovanni’s seven children, took over the winery and continued to cultivate the vineyards and sell the grapes to large wine producers in Franciacorta. However, in the back of his mind, he always wanted to create something special with his own grapes. In 2007, his daughter Francesca, wanting to honor the work that her grandfather and her father had done, decided to start producing and bottling their own wines. In 2010, Nobilium Brut was introduced to the market as the first Franciacorta DOCG Bonfadini. The wine’s immediate success was not enough for Francesca. Her constant attention to the finest details of all aspects of the wine business, from the growing of the grapes, vinification, aging, aesthetic aspects of the packaging and marketing helped bring the 5,000 bottles of Bonfadini’s first year to 50,000 bottles of four very distinct classical wines. In 2013, with the addition of winemaker Gianni Gasperi, Bonfadini succeeded in establishing its own distinctive identity. Since then, their wines have received many awards and positive feedback in Italy and abroad. The future looks exciting: Bonfadini is investing resources to upgrade the winery to produce up to 100,000 bottles a year. New types of Franciacorta wines will be introduced and, as always, Bonfadini will keep its highest standards of excellence.

Umberto’s and Bruno’s important job and dedication today, over 40 years after the foundation, is matched by that of their sons, Danilo Notarnicola and Pietro Violo, who work at their side. The philosophy of all the producers is the creation of value in every single step of the production, from soil to bottle and maintaining the value of environment, territory, human resources, bio-diversity, rural beauty and hard work. Diwinexport is not a distributor but a network of small wine companies that share the export market and promote themselves as a group. All the 11 wine companies part of the consortium pay particular attention to the protection of the natural balance between the vineyard and the surrounding environment while producing the grapes: this means that maintaining the fertility of the soil is an essential prerequisite. Some companies work with natural biological processes while others follow ecological, sustainable protocols. Here, Martina Moreale carries on the project of her husband Roberto, founder of the winery. In Friulian language, the name “Roncal” means a terraced estate on a hill. Their vineyards are favored by an excellent exposure and the sandstone/marl soil ideal for growing grapes. At Il Roncal, the grape harvest is delayed on purpose in order to pick the grapes when they come to their full ripeness. The process is then carried out within the factory cellars, with traditional methods and under controlled temperature. In a perfect harmony of tradition and modern times, the shiny cold steel basins stand along the sweetsmelling oak casks where the wines mature and the fragrance becomes full-blown.

Located between Piedmont and Liguria, the region benefits considerably from coastal influences without it being close to the sea. The estate’s production of Gavi La Mesma DOCG comes from Cortese grape vines planted on 64 acres of fine medium-blend soil on southward exposed hillsides at an altitude of about 984 feet. Their aim is to make expressive wines through hard work in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar. La Mesma wines must preserve varietal integrity, vintage and a sense of place. They are exported all over the world. The farm is currently under organic conversion. Their goal is to ensure a long and healthy life to their vines. La Mesma encourages biodiversity: their vines are pruned with the Simonit and Sirch method. A final selection of grapes is made during picking, prior to soft pressing.

The rest of the land is an expanse of biodiversity-rich forest, arable crops and the green areas surrounding the winery and the guest accommodation houses (agriturismo). The microclimate unique to the area area is a mix of diverse features: the Judrio river, the Bosco Romagno Nature Reserve and, importantly, an exceptional exposure to sunlight. The Eocene marl in the soil, the so-called “ponca”, does the rest, imparting a distinct minerality, intense aromas and good structure to the wines. The native Schioppettino di Prepotto and the historical vineyard of Friulano, dating back to 1968, stand out among the Cru vineyards.

Region: Apulia In the 17th century, in Torrevento, the northwestern part of Apulian Murgia, a monastery was built entirely from stone. In 1948, the Liantonio family bought the estate (monastery, cellar and 141 acres of surrounding vineyards) and moved in their wine production and sales business, originally started in 1920 in Palo del Colle. In Contrada Torrevento, the winery grew under family management in the beginning and, since 1989, as Azienda Vitivinicola Torrevento. The company has almost 494 acres of its own propriety and 494 acres belonging to other owners but managed by Torrevento on the hills where the imposing Castel del Monte arises: a famous monument, octagonal in shape, in the middle of the Rural Park of Alta Murgia. The old undergrounds, 26 feet deep, are today perfect places to preserve wine. The ancient stable, recently rebuilt, makes for an ideal tasting site. The company owns a hotel, a restaurant, agriturismo bed and breakfast and horse riding facilities. Torrevento will undergo major reconstructions, extensions and technological modernization to promote economic development and growth, respecting the pre-existing original building – creating a perfect union between the old and the new – and respecting the Murgia territory and the Castel del Monte area. Torrevento has Certification ISO 9001 for the Corporate Quality, ISO 14001 for the Environment Quality and recently BRC and IFS. Thanks to the favorable mix of elements such as the selection of the grape varieties, the favorable microclimate, the rocky soil, the modern technology of fermentation, vinification and ageing and, finally, a perfect building for the preservation and ageing of wines, Torrevento actually improves on the most important native grapes, such as Nero di Troia, Aglianico, Bombino Nero, Bombino Bianco, Pampanuto, Moscato Reale and Moscato, Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera and Negroamaro.

Region: Apulia Apulia has been producing wine for 1,000 years and, even during the Middle Ages, it recorded a considerable production. Dante Alighieri describes Apulia as “a thirsty land where the sun turns into wine.” The grapes of Tufara Donvito grow in a very old limestone quarry where, during the Byzantine period, raw materials were extracted for the construction of the castle in Gioia del Colle (Bari) later expanded by the Emperor Frederick II. The Apulian artist Gino Donvito, whose work often evokes historical facts related to Frederick II, decided to honor the beloved emperor not only through art but also through the wine Tufara Donvito, explicitly dedicated to Frederick II. The importance of wine-growing development was also well understood by the monarch, although he didn’t drink: he had about a thousand grapevines imported from Campania and planted in the Castel del Monte area. The wine Tufara Donvito hides ancient stories from the land to which Gino Donvito and his daughter Luna are immensely bound. As the saying goes: “Time not devoted to Land or Art is time wasted.” Donvito is not only a passionate winemaker but also the artist waiting for inspiration to create a new artwork. He signs his art with an olive branch, a message of peace but, at the same time, the tangible mark of his extraordinary love for Apulia.

ITALIAN ORGANIZATION

The “Friuli Grave” DOC appellation covers about 18,532 acres on both sides of the Tagliamento River in the provinces of Pordenone and Udine in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The high Friuli plain, sheltered by the Alpine foothills, has a particularly original landscape marked with stony soils called “Grave” (areas closer to the rivers with lots of alluvial deposits). This large area was formed by alluvial matter washed down from the Alps by Meduna, Cellina and Tagliamento rivers. Over thousands of years, these rivers deposited enormous quantities of calcareous-dolomitic material that had been gouged out from the mountains by violent waters and washed along the course of their riverbeds. The entire plain is made of alluvial soils with large deposits in the northernmost segment of the DOC area becoming ever finer downriver. As well as being the source of the distinctive pebbly soil of the “Grave” area, the nearby mountains protect the valley from icy winds blowing from the north. This aspect, along with the mitigating influence of the Adriatic Sea, has created a climate that is particularly suitable for viticulture. However, there is another reason why the “Grave” area can produce wines of such high quality: the pebbles and stones that lie on the surface of the soils enhance the differences between night time and day time temperatures, reflecting light during the day and storing heat to release it at night. This enhances the ripening of the grapes and the development sugar and aromatic components. The results are intense and elegant wines. Producing approx. 200,000 hectoliters of wine per year, “Friuli Grave” DOC is the largest appellation Friuli Venezia Giulia, accounting for more than 50% of the region’s wine production. Wines made from white varieties are fresh, fruity and elegant while the reds are harmonious and aromatic when young and intense, and full-bodied when aged.
