shape of formless this portfolio contains the result of the experiences collected to date. It reflects the relationship between ideas and reality, abstract and physical. I am interested in space which is formless. that is why I am interested in design in its multiple scales and uses, manifestations and questions.

The project started on the crisis of modernist architecture and urban planning in China. The city of Beijing represents one example of a collection of closed systems and generic architecture. The materialization of closed boundaries inside the city is not only physical but also social, ethics and political. With the project of urban regeneration, we worked on these edge conditions with a multiscale approach, from the urban scale to the architecture of the buildings. We explored the transition from objects to the idea of fluid space which is shapeless. It is at this point that in-between represents a fundamental dimension where the traditional city become a potential for the future urbanization and not only the heritage of the past. A new urban porosity enriched the experience of the area we took under exam, but it was not enough. The porosity expanded in the definition of the buildings around it, in the creation of borders, which are open, interactive, permeable. The architectural solutions adopted surfaces as open-ended elements, out of the paradigm "form follows function", leaving an unshaped space inbetween. The dimension of the space in-between represented the space of culture, able to evolve and mutate with people and uses. The space between represents the quality of the space and the quality of the relations between people and the urban environment.

The exercise aimed to explore the variations inside the typology of the courtyard house. The work is embedded in the traditional context of the city of Nanjing, in a peripherical historical area. The fragmentation is represented in the city, at the urban level as in the small illegal addition to the historical houses. With this idea in mind, the project is conceived as an assemblage of domestic elements inside the rectangular boundaries. The city is represented in a single cell. The elements can expand or multiply with the same dynamics of the outside. In this sense, the cell is not isolated but influenced by internal and external needs or economic possibilities. The distributive elements are however the most important part of the building, representing the glue between the elements, formally and functionally. They are the exception inside the rule.

The project represents the transformation of the architectural concept of "elements" into an urban concept. The resilience of the concept relies on its ability to scale-up. "Distributive carpets" works around the morphology of the city or, in other terms, with the morphology of the open space. Inside the dense traditional Chinese cities, the street represents the public space par excellence. On the contrary, the disruptive modernization of the country made the street as a non-public, non-open element. The project is based on the distributive relationship of the elements, which are part of new development, as a new framework of public life. The capillarity of the public spaces reminds the intertwining of carpets and tissues, forming a network of possibilities. This concept represents an a-dimensional rule for the distribution, bridges, streets, corridors inside the houses, going beyond the definition of what happened at the single cells.

The project explores the boundaries of urbanization toward the countryside in China. The experience is embedded in the unique context of the Winter Olympic Games of Beijing in 2022. This event moves the entire mechanism of urbanization of the Hebei province, along the infrastructurization of the countryside. The extremely divided realities of the city and the countryside are, in this case, disrupted by the new highway that crosses the fields. Two different elements are now critically joint with all their contradictions and collisions. The countryside is not the future here. Duanmugou, an almost abandoned village, want to find a new transformation. This is an edge condition. The question of the project aims to see the village beyond its physical boundaries in a new ecological system, where multiple scenes can take place. The masterplan explores the cohabitation of different systems and startegies, working at the same scale of a megacity. The collaboration with the inhabitants explored the question of urban and rural and its fragility. Definitions which become blurred in their borders.

The project reflects the debate around education today. How education should prepare students in any field and not only architects. On what should the students be educated. The project claims the rejection of the educational philosophy where professors inject knowledge in students. The rejection of a standardized and formal relationship. This building is designed from its intimate interiors and the meaning of culture as the foundation of communication. It represents this transformation from the linear chain factory toward a fluid and open space, where diversity and resilience can expand. The school assumes the posture of an organism colonising the old and capturing the external condition of the world. Its interiors are open cells connected with each other, fostering serendipity and informal dialogue.

The project represents a common reality in Italian and European cities: the result of industrialization and its following abandonment. However, beside potential industrial skeletons there are traces of those who came before: small and crystalized activities who lost their battle against the big industry. Today this could represent an alternative potential inside the crisis of welfare and factories. The technological and innovative craftmanship could create a new system using those traces of the past. The project creates a linear sequence without the romanticism of the past, investigating how the impact of the new agricultural experimentations, and technologies could enrich this neighborhood and the life of its resident today as well as in the future. The adaptivity of this layer of the city could represent a vision for what is defined as a fragile city.

The project analyses the impact of the label co-living on its people. The building, beside Parc de la Villette in Paris, aims to investigate the relationship between the building and the city, in particular, the movement of people inside the building. Working in the outskirt of the city require working at the periphery of the architecture. The movement of people is a dialogue between inside and outside. The corner of the block is sculpted by a vertical distribution, a street where people of the co-living can engage in a conversation and share their thoughts. In this way, the building can be read as an urban aggregate, without the definition of a closed community. The horizontal plane of the street enters inside the building, distributing the single residences. Distribution is not only a place for movement, it is a shared space with unforeseen collisions.

Gated communities represent nowadays a common reality around the world. Many of them are planned but some are just leftovers, communities who saw walls built around them by others. In this case, the Watermill Community is one of the last category and today it is surrounded by the highways and the boundaries of Tsinghua University's campus. The thick wall separating the school and the urban village represented a potential artefact. For us, the original brick wall was too thin. The new wall is designed not as a line of separation but as a meeting volume, where the diversity of the urban conditions can interact and obtain benefits from the contact. The translucent building reunites two opposite faces in a buffer space for both without being a blind edge. The volume become a light and open snake which reunite two isolated islands.

The exhibition represented the space of the words. "Voices" is the series of exhibitions brought by Vladimir Belogolovsky where the voice of an architect is brought to the physical space. The exhibition compared two generations of architects, half of them, American and the other half from China. The exhibition is designed in a fluid movement of words, without models or drawings. The exhibition is based on the fragments of the several interviews and condensed in the dynamic space of Philip Yuan's building. The exhibition wants to make those voices loud enough to be heard.

"Human Gaps" is a personal project explored on Instagram. It represents the exploration of different cultural contexts, materialized in forms and practices, rituals and habits. Following the current age of disinformation and fake news, captions and images are disconnected, creating an impossible or ambiguous dialogue. However, behind the conception of the assemblage, resides similar questions. Similar issues to which human beings responded with different answers. The objective of the project is to break the idea of differences and contrapositions in the world through broken bridges.

"Shape of Culture" is a personal exploration in formless forms. Culture is an invisible layer between organisms: fluid, borderless and unstable. With this premise, the project wants to experiment with the abstract visualizations of this layer, transforming it in a solid and visible state. The exploration wants to think about culture in a different way, not seeing culture in its symbols but in terms of its form. It is an on-going project of experimentation through different media. The limitation of understanding the complexity, become a definition of choices. But it is this awarness of the silent aura, which become audible and visible only when we cut it, that makes this experiment a continuous mutation.
