BORGO PARAELIOS Rieti, Italy 1st prize Design competiton for expansion of Borgo Paraelios thermal/hotel complex Coworking with biro+ Studio, Bari / 2020 The expansion and redevelopment project of the Borgo Paraelios hotel complex guarantees a new thermal and holiday experience totally integrated with nature. The main thread of the project is water. The new entrance from the street elevates visitors on the panoramic terrace overlooking the spa and containing the cylindrical block of the reception, the compositional and functional project pivot. The main building contains all the spa functions and collects the water flowing from above in a system of internal and external pools. The accommodations are developed both in line and on terraces, keeping the intimate relationship with the water and the landscape alive. To a greater integration of the building contribute: a careful choice of cladding materials that recall the earth and the rock tones, the grafting of the buildings along the slope with a low amount of extirpated existing vegetation and the use of garden roofs .

RACHEL SMOLEN Eindhoven, Netherlands Competiton on New Rachelsmolen Campus Ector Hoogstad Architects, Rotterdam The proposal for the new Rachelsmolen Campus is based on the design of three new buildings, to be integrated with the existing educational fabrics. The design provides a green and water-rich landscape campus, with detached, recognizable buildings with lots of space around them for all kinds of activities. Each building has its own recognizable architecture, because diversity is an essential characteristic of a successful campus. The central building (A) has a meeting identity: it includes very dynamically enviroments and rooms; the second building (B) is a people-oriented healing environment with a lot of green and daylight; the third building (C) is provided of a high-tech quiet system for focus and student experimentations.

LAND GATE Kotor, Montenegro Master Degree Thesis Due to their geographical position and their physical conformation, the Bay of Kotor has always been the natural gate of the Balkans to the Adriatic Sea: in fact it is the deepest fjord of the Mediterranean. The project of the Land Gate is located in the village of Skaljari in the inner part of the Kotor Bay. The project’s aim is to give a new order to a part of the city that hasn’t a defined urban shape. The whole intervention coincides with the ‘size’ of the territory; the landmarks of the composition are at the two extremities of the Skaljari bay: the first one is an existing building, an example of exquisite modern Yugoslav architecture, the second one is a project element that fits along the coast. The two plates take place in a free area reclining on the natural elements of the territory, the coast line and the fresh water canals. The two architectural objects, one square and the other by rectangular proportions, define a large open space between them, which isolates them as ‘unique’ objects and links them as elements of the same nature.

ONDA 2020 Bari, Italy International Design Competition New Waterfront of Bari Mauro SĂ ito Architetti, Bari The regeneration project aims to increase the attractiveness of Waterfront places by enhancing their identity, adding new uses to the public space, researching a balance between tradition and innovation. The strength points of the project are the pedestrianization of the Waterfront and the creation of new Urban Magnets (squares, facilities, panoramic routes, access to the sea, reuse and new uses of the sea) that complete the morphology that is sometimes interrupted and unexpressed. The consolidation of the shapes takes place through small engravings and lifting of the ground to be realized through the use of local stone materials: new ramps and paths expand the public space to the sea and facilitate accessibility by creating new beaches and observation points.

GEOMETRIA PRODUTTIVA Verbania, Italy Europan 15, International Design Competition The project rises on a strategic vision, which, as a backbone in the whole area, allows it to evolve and adapt in different possible scenarios. The new Ex Acetati must include new functions, integrating the needs of different stakeholders and including new opportunities for public-private partnerships. The goal is to overcome functional homogeneity and isolation; to create a brand of the entire production park; to promote a development based on sustainable solutions, on the circular economy and co-production systems. The production space intersects with green spaces, for both manufacturing and agricultural use and public use. These spaces act both as a filter between the different areas of the area and as a buffer towards the other production areas. The project integrates the needs of different stakeholders and includes new opportunities for public-private partnerships. The goal is to overcome functional homogeneity and isolation, aiming at longterm resilience, which provides environmental and social benefits. The area is a production densifier, which intersects with cultural, research, leisure and training spaces. A grid generates a large-scale connection system that welds the different morphological patterns of Verbania. This matrix provides spatial alternatives for the Industry 4.0 model, based on green co-production and circular and sharing economy.

THE CUBE Amsterdam, Netherlands Europan 14, International Design Competition The project area is strongly characterized by the presence of private buildings of a productive nature. The removal of some volumes and the determination of new open spaces has allowed to regain shape to the urban fabric. New constructions of different sizes allow the meeting of both residential and work space: 3 large buildings are designed in order to mix working space and family life. The main building, which contains working and residential spaces. takes shape from a cube that is emptied and modeled to better adapt to new functions. The ground floor emptied is a common open space that relates to the canal and to the main roads. Inside the building is articulated in 6 levels each with a different conformation. In addition to the ground floor, the upper planks are shaped to accommodate the common terraces that are linked by an external staircase and work as roof garden for residents and workers. The facades of the building reflect the structure of the interior spaces.

LURAGO Lurago d’erba, Italy International Design Competition Kindergarten The school building presents itself as a declination of the classical idea of kindergarten according to which the sections’ rooms overlook a common atrium that serves as a meeting and interaction place. At the same time, the high environmental quality of the surrounding landscape penetrates within it and becomes part of the building. The primary goal of the project is to offer a constant interaction between school users and nature, as requirement of the Montessori method, nowdays rare experience within modern urban contexts. The limit between inside and outside are blurred. The elements that make up the school are single pavilions into the natural context. Each pavilion is held mutually by the common atrium typical of the traditional school, which triples its dimensions mixing internal - external character. The porch is partly closed by windows and partly open, and surrounds an open courtyard equipped for play and learning on the open area.

DWELLING IN THE PARK Bari, Italy Urban Design Lab The project area is currently occupied by military barracks. The aim is to evaluate the whole area through a residential intervention that respects the territorial morphology, as well as creating new green spaces. In particular, the central area has been thought of as a natural woodland space, which differs from the green of the courts that serves as a garden. The grammar of the project involves the containment of this central area through a series of redent that are divided into linear and short urban areas. Their massive structure differs from the lightness of the lodges, only present at the courts. To the east, a compact fabric of patio houses with its geometries recreates an urban space made up of streets and squares that reconnect the unequal fabric of the contemporary city with the large central green vacuum.

ESCUELAS EN RABAT Rabat, Morocco International Design Competition Taller bà sico de arquitectura, Pamplona The project aims at the development of a complex of school buildings, from primary to high school. The project area has a strong slope: from this the idea of a sequence of planes that regularize the different ground levels and among which the various school units take shape. Plans become the roofs of each building and are always protruding from them, to create a shadow system needed in such a hot place as Rabat. The façades are marked by a series of pillars that bind the roofs to the ground, while the exterior surface of the buildings is treated with painted ceramic elements typical of the place.

UMBRELLAS Bari, Italy Project of an umbrella cover The project involves the design of an umbrella cover that can be closed. The steel structure consists of a central pillar which holds 8 cellular beams that support the covering membrane. The beams differ in two shapes depending on they are diagonal or transverse. The umbrella can be closed by resizing its square plant to 5.5x5.5m and reaching a maximum height of 18m with its central pillar. The aggregation consists of 6 autonomous elements and the movement takes place through a hydraulic system acting directly on the central pillar. The beam movement takes place thanks to the telescopic configuration of the central pillar consisting of 3 cable cylinders. The arms change inclination by means of steel cables connected to the central pillar.

SIM HOUSE Bari, Italy Interior design project *built DED’A e Florio Architetti, Bari This interior design project aims to reorganize the space of a 200 square meters apartment. The main theme is the creation of ‘furniture islands’ which separate each domestic spaces. The usual corridor conception as a space that serves the individual rooms is therefore avoided: now there is the perception of a great environment punctuated by these furnishing elements, which contain and hide the wall partitions. The furnishings can be used both inside the bedrooms and the living area, both in the service area, with obviously different functions. The west side of the house is the service area, with two bathrooms that face the inner courtyard of the building complex, and the kitchen area: this is large and livable and for its spatial character it could be considered as an extension of the living area.

boXXX Bari, Italy Interior design project *built DED’A e Florio Architetti, Bari Removable and incorporating the existing pillars, the boXXX are equipped with dark spacer from the horizontal surfaces of the floors, in order to be light and floating in space. The absence of handles, thanks to push and pull or sliding opening systems, allows for pure and multi-functional boxes. The LED lighting integrated in the furnishings makes the boxes totally autonomous. The kitchen furnishings are made with white plywood panels. The storage area is located behind the kitchen and consists of continuous shelves on various levels. The central island fits between the kitchen and the mini spa with the double function: tableware on one side, archive and office station on the opposite side. The boXXX idea seeks to maximize the kitchen space while still allowing the variety of functions needed for the living space. The kitchen becomes home. The house is in the kitchen.
