Always ready for a change Energy is civilisation. The energy crisis has forced us to review the dominant, consumer-linked cultural models, leading to a radical change in the culture of design and of product. Contemporary technological research must give concrete body and shape to this change, and set up
favourable conditions for efficient energy use. Often the real problem is the relationship between theory and practice, or “manifesto” and “application” but in Reggiani’s experience, the two moments stand side by side in an evident ongoing dialogue.
Indeed, Reggiani’s talent has always been tied to an extraordinary capacity to epitomise the best technological innovation available in its designs and in its products, favouring the propensity towards effective and efficient solutions.
Reggiani’s choice In order to create an energy and design conscience, the company chose to develop a system to give hands-on shape to light. The Reggiani IOS, Interchangeable Optical System was created in 2005 and is the result of research conceived and investigated by Fabio Reggiani, exponent of a pragmatic and energy aware culture. This is the first system with interchangeable optics giving designers the possibility of creating extremely high energy efficiency solutions as well as great design freedom. Indeed, one substantial consideration lies behind the Reggiani IOS design: generally, the luminous efficiency of luminaires does not exceed 65%. Design flexibility has always been a Reggiani priority, in the past and in this case too. So, Reggiani IOS is an extremely high efficiency optical system that gives the luminaire integrating it a luminous efficiency of up to 90%. The Reggiani project for the future is the freedom and the pleasure of improving the quality of the environment.
A world where technology means less environmental impact, combined with energy efficiency and freedom of choice The key element of luminous efficiency is the optics. The possibility of the optics being separate from the luminaire and easily replaceable means the kind of lighting given to the setting can be changed without replacing the whole luminaire – this produces efficiency without limiting design freedom, on the contrary, enhancing it.
Everything in the Reggiani IOS, Interchangeable Optical System is designed to save: • lower energy consumption, thanks to the reflector’s luminous efficiency that can reach 90%, over 25% more than reflectors with traditional optics; • lower installation costs, because the simplicity of Reggiani IOS installation translates into greatly reduced assembly and replacement times compared to any other type of product; • lower initial outlay, because higher luminous efficiency means fewer luminaires to light the same area; • lower system costs, because fewer light points mean a simpler and more efficient system; • lower air-conditioning costs, because fewer light points and lower wattage installed mean less heat dispersed so the air-conditioning system does not have to work so hard; • fewer constraints, because with Reggiani IOS freedom of choice is not just a promise like so many others, it’s a fact. It is the possibility to really design light, to select the beam, the light source, the kind of luminaire you want to use for that specific setting.

In brief, if we compare a luminaire that uses the Reggiani IOS System with a traditional one, the difference in terms of overall saving is obvious. With Reggiani IOS there are savings on consumption, on the power used, on the number of luminaires, on installation and maintenance costs, on the system and on air-conditioning costs.

The power of innovation Reggiani interprets innovation as a strength connected to the area of knowledge that needs to be managed and directed also to optimise the transfer of innovation from the company to its interlocutors. Reggiani research works in carefully selected and ideal directions, not according to pre-set goals. The Reggiani modus operandi is oriented towards the system, to the analysis of needs. In this process, innovation and creativity go hand in hand.
Reggiani spared no effort in designing and producing Reggiani IOS, Interchangeable Optical System: strict inspection and testing leading to international certifications and the best materials, starting from the 99.99% pure aluminium. The Reggiani IOS System is made completely from recoverable materials.
The knurled edge makes the reflector easy to grip and attach, and it also comes with a built-in tempered safety glass and a twist-lock fixing system. In the Mira version, the rotation of the reflector on the twist-lock fixing system means the light beam can be adjusted from 0° to 360°.

Light follows function The Reggiani IOS System is the most innovative response that lighting technology now makes available to designers to create solutions in the pursuit of the highest degree of efficiency and flexibility. Reggiani IOS is a complete series of optics with a very wide range of light beams and colours, making it possible to change the lighting design layout of a setting at any time and very simply, maximising efficiency each time.

The light we need The optics of the Reggiani IOS, Interchangeable Optical System can be installed, moved or changed rapidly in several dozen families of Reggiani luminaires, guaranteeing users and designers unprecedented flexibility. The selection process does not start from the product design or housing, but from the light beam, in other words from the quantity of light really needed. Reggiani IOS, heart of the light, determines the width of the light beam and the efficiency of the luminaire, irrespective of the lighting body design. Once the desired light beam and quantity are defined, the product configuration or design most appropriate for the setting to light is selected. First the light is selected, then the light is clothed. A large number of Reggiani luminaires are set up for the IOS System: ranging from recessed luminaires through projectors and pendants, to exterior luminaires.

IOS Oro, chromatic evolution IOS with gold reflector completes a very wide range of extremely high efficiency optics at the service of architects and lighting designers. The “gold” metallic finish of the IOS reflector makes it possible to lower the colour temperature of the light source used in the optics by 300 K (Kelvin). Reggiani IOS products go on stage Like spaces and objects, light too has a key inuence on the quality of living. It means building a world and doing so at sustainable costs. Each successful design project is the result of a winning combination of identities and expertise, also taking into account individual needs and collaboration.
Reggiani is not interested in showing off, but in designing spaces where it is easy to live, in letting customers have their say and in the setting. Here are some of its most recent installations, which illustrate the Reggiani IOS System.

The ICONIC project in Dubai proved to be an excellent opportunity in the search for both integrated and specific lighting design solutions for the 250 brands, with lots of different merchandising categories (fashion boutiques, bars, restaurants, health centres, flower shops, footwear, music and gadget retailers) gathered under the one roof of a cutting-edge building in a unique city of the UAE. Problems concerning the control and management of the strong natural light, together with the need to generate a striking design solution for the various times of day were some of the topics included in the brief behind the choice of the lighting systems to use for a building whose main surface is curved glass from top to bottom and which has a large sized lobby. The decision fell to the Reggiani IOS optics fitted with metal halide lamps and LEDs.

The wide range of product families available in the recessed or track-mounted versions made it possible to develop formally different solutions, also from the aesthetic point of view, which satisfy the various needs of the many brands present. Special products and finishes were associated with a wide range of lighting and visual solutions for communication that integrated the IOS optics in all the settings, together with RE LED Luce where very low maintenance or dimming and dedicated control of the system were of primary importance, in addition to high colour rendering.
Optimising the variety of light sources used was one of the main goals of the project: metal halide lamps with Reggiani IOS Systems were used in the double height ceiling of the entrance, installed on beams with pulleys to support periodic visual merchandising and for maintenance of the luminaires installed very high. During the installation and start-up phase, it was fundamental to be able to change the optics and adjust the lighting design along with the product display.
UNISIO This is the recessed luminaire with exceptional visual comfort that is perfect for ďŹ xed accent lighting; it comes in three different diameters, with bezel or trimless. It is highly versatile so it can be used for different applications ranging from interior lighting of small spaces to large spaces with ceiling heights of more than six metres. The smaller diameter model can harmoniously ďŹ t into museum settings, while the larger diameters, with more power can be used in spaces with remarkably high ceilings.
VARIOS Die-cast aluminium, track mounted or surface mounted adjustable projector; the whole luminaire has optimum aesthetic balance of the volumes as a result of keeping the control gear and lighting body separate to favour the best heat dissipation. BISIO Fully adjustable recessed luminaire, with mobile shield and the capacity to turn from an inspot to a downspot in a moment. It is the perfect choice for all situations that require extreme flexibility. Adjustability in the horizontal axis is 358°, while it varies from +90° (DOWNSPOT) to -35° (INSPOT) in the vertical axis, depending on the models and the light sources. SOMBRADO Square or round, it is a completely trimless recessed luminaire with an extraordinarily pure style, perfect for adjustable or fixed lighting. The lighting project for TSTM in New York was developed by the Client’s design team on the basis of new concept, very precise design requirements in compliance with energy consumption standards ordered by the city of New York for the type of shops in question: 1.7 watts / m². Following detailed lighting simulations and tests carried out in sample areas, the final decision fell on a design solution that only adopts metal halide lamps, with narrow and medium Reggiani IOS optics and wattages of 20W and 39W. Ceilings reaching up to almost five metres and dark finishes made it possible to use all the potential of the high efficiency of the Reggiani IOS System. The recessed luminaires with multiple IOS optics were built into channels with bar systems for visual merchandising, which made it possible to maintain optimal distribution and angle of the light flow.
The luminaires for 20W lamps use different lampholders than the ones set up for 39W lamps to simplify installation and maintenance. The two different lampholders (G8.5 and G12) for the 20W lamps and the 39W lamps also made it easier to match the lamps. So, the overall lighting design solution on five floors strategically focused on reducing the variety of luminaires and light sources to facilitate maintenance and stocking of spare lamps. Still, the quality of the light required was guaranteed by the metal halide lamps with high colour rendering. In the triple height space of the lobby, a double pulley system was mounted so as to be able to set up this large area facing onto Broadway with visual merchandising and suitably illuminated artistic installations.
In the low circulation areas, where it was decided to install fluorescent lamps, PIR sensors (Passive Infrared Sensor) were used for a solution that could provide extra energy saving elements. In all the luminaires used, recessed and track-mounted, key factors to the success of the installation were: high efficiency of the reflectors, interchangeability and high adjustability of the optics, maximum simplification of the product types and emergency packs built into the recessed luminaires with Reggiani IOS Systems.

The retrospective dedicated to Richard Rogers, one of the names behind the “Beaubourg machine” has ended a long series of initiatives promoted to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary since the centre was established. The initial brief of AB Rogers requested a striking lighting solution that would use high efficiency light sources that could concentrate directed lighting on plastic models and drawings, sketches, drafts displayed and with an evenly lit “timeline” wall as backdrop, which would be in harmony with the chiaroscuro effects of the exhibition layout. Another design constraint came from the use of an already existing network of tracks installed very close to the ceiling. The design solution adopted meant developing a tailormade product, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, which involved the use of track mounted pendants suspended from cables and of steel, surface mounted pendants so as to be able to direct the light onto the large tables– display units where the plastic models are placed.
So, three operational levels were defined to develop the lighting project: • wall-washer light, track mounted AMBAR projectors with metal halide lamps, 70W, 6500 K, wide beam; • directed accent lighting, concentrated on plastic models, using the track mounted suspended AMBAR projector with 35W metal halide lamps, 4200K and anti-glare louvre; • accent lighting on drawings, sketches and drafts of designs using track mounted AMBAR projectors with 35W lamp, 6500K, narrow and medium beam. In keeping with the AB Rogers brief, the light was concentrated on the works only, not on the circulating areas. In the central, relaxation area where a section of the bamboo ceiling covering of Madrid airport was displayed, indirect lighting was used, reflected from fuchsia coloured seating. The objects that formed the setting, from tables to seating, to computer workstations were designed by Abe Rogers, designer and son of the architect. It was decided to use metal
halide lamps with Reggiani IOS optics throughout the whole exhibition space. In the lobby zone, AMBAR projectors, together with some MAANTIS luminaires completed the lighting design solution for the exhibition, highlighting the 1:10 scale plastic model representing the steel load-bearing structure designed for Terminal 5 of Heathrow airport in London. The partnership between the Rogers studio and Reggiani to develop the system of AMBAR projectors was particularly interesting and, in line with the philosophy of the Reggiani IOS System it proved to be very effective in this type of exhibition setting application.

A modern, transparent design reveals the technical complexity of the control gear, aesthetically and functionally detached from the aluminium body that houses an optical compartment integrating the Reggiani IOS System.
The technical and functional details become decorative, like the adjustment knob with red silicone rubber. Ambar comes in two sizes and as pendant, track- or surface-mounted luminaire; it is perfect for accent lighting and incorporates the advantages of the Reggiani IOS System in a beautiful, eye-catching object.
Lingshan Fangong Palace of Mt. Lingshan, Wuxi, China, December 2009 Located on the eastern side of Mount Lingshan and facing onto Taihu lake, Fangong Palace has an area of 70,000 square metres and is one of the eight grand cultural projects of the city of Wuxi, open to visitors since 1st January 2009. The Palace is a multifunctional cultural building, designed for conferences, exhibitions and events. The ceremonial hall was the site of the Buddhist World Forum in 2009; it can hold up to 2000 people, is fitted with a large,

rotating stage and has a total area of about 35,000 m² with a 30-metre high cupola lit by 1500 lotus flower lamps: a kind of large, star-spangled universe. For the first time in China, this location is an extraordinary representation of all the culture of fine Chinese artwork: Dongyang woodcarving, Dunhuang mural paintings, Yangzhou dry-lacquer sculptures and cloisonné enamels. The products that Reggiani selected in this case
respond perfectly to the lighting requirements dictated by extremely high ceilings and very solemn spaces of this site with its vertiginous and memorable structure. The light was also used to suitable highlight all the types of artwork throughout the palace.
RIOS Fully adjustable projector in three sizes, with a seductive goblet shape. Although it was designed for external use, it easily adapts to indoor use in settings with certain characteristics/critical points. The high degree of protection (IP66) means it can be installed in wet environments, for example where there are fountains or at considerable heights where scheduled maintenance is difďŹ cult.

Max Divani showroom, Altamura, Bari, Italy, October 2007 Inaugurated in 2007 for its 50th anniversary, the Max Divani showroom with 2,300 m² of exhibition area enables its customers to enter into contact with the quality of the products of one of the most renowned and long-established companies in the upholstered furniture sector in the Murgia area. One fundamental characteristics of the lighting project for the Max Divani showroom was the concept of flexibility over time. The functional and

optimal result was obtained using Trisio projectors with Reggiani IOS optics and 35W metal halide lamps mounted on a track system. By choosing this luminaire the exhibition layout can be freely changed at any time without any constraints. Through the contrast with the adjacent areas of the showroom, the goods on display are highlighted by using medium or narrow beam reflectors directed onto single seats or individual pieces of furniture.
The façade of the building stands out in the urban context thanks to the measured use of Metamorphosi ground recessed projectors, fitted with Reggiani IOS tilting optics and 35W metal halide lamps: the controlled, grazing narrow beam exalts the vertical nature of the architectural work and the rough texture of the outer skin through the contrast of light and dark.
TRISIO This is a highly versatile adjustable interior projector, which comes in three sizes and the following versions: pendant, surface mounted and track mounted. The optical compartment has a dynamic and essential design and it can be tilted to the desired position using the friction joint that can also be fixed in place with the screw lock.
METAMORPHOSI This ground recessed luminaire, fixed or with tilting optics, traces evocative pathways and meandering curves of light in outdoor areas, making it ideal for general or accent lighting in contexts that require high degree of protection (IP 67). Made from noble metals (AISI
316 Marine-grade stainless steel or bronze), this luminaire gives the outdoor or indoor setting a classic and refined ambience.
External landscape The external space expresses an anthropological, aesthetic and cultural dimension allowing the people who live there to use it as a moment of exchange in their everyday lives. The lighting establishes the actual idea of external space – garden, square, road, pathway – as a place to live in by day and by night, always. Artificial light means the green space can also be enjoyed outside the fine season. With lighting that can respond to the criteria of functionality as much as aesthetics, the garden no longer stays in the shadows, it turns into a landscape full of interesting elements.

On the other hand, the lighting of a square requires setting a scene, studying the relationships between the luminosities of the various buildings, coming up with a spectacular accent lighting design that is the instrument used to exalt and enhance a process of urban renewal and social conviviality. More still: the threshold of a church, whether it is visible, architectural, or whether it is seen as a bare space, is a solemn place. In this case, the lighting can only accompany the believers, discreetly, or inspire the tourist. The parvis is also a waiting area: lighting as an invitation to participate in the meeting.
An obelisk is an important sign of reference in the urban landscape. It often expresses the sense of belonging of a community to its land. The lighting project can restore this element to the night-time perception, attempting as far as possible to contextualise the visual effect in the landscape.
