FULL TIME JOB AT RENZO PIANO BUILDING WORKSHOP
Bo n Centre Santander, Spain Client: Fundación Bo n Total bldg surface: 8000sqm Budget: around 80M € (including tunnel and park) Phase: concept design and developed design
The “Bo n Centre” is a mixed use building located on the waterfront including: - 2500m2 of exhibi on spaces divided into two large galleries; - a 300 seats auditorium for high class concerts; - officies and classrooms; - a cafeteria and a shop; - a system of external walkways called ‘pachinko’. The interven on includes the renova on of a public park and the construc on of a 200 meters tunnel that will favour the connec on between the city and the waterfront.
2015-2016 Santander, Spain RPBW SITE ARCHITECT AT THE BOTíN CENTRE AUDITORIUM
As a site architect, I’ve been working on the definion of several interior details, together with the subcontractors and in coordina on with the consultants, the project manager and the client. An important part of the job was the verifica on on site of the design defini on through the produc on of several mockups. As an example, I was involved in the defini on of the auditorium, with the support of the acous c and electroacous c consultant. The most characterizing element of this space is the cladding of the walls composed by wooden lamellae. Behind the cladding, a system of retractable curtains and cylindrical sound-sca ering elements allows to adjust the acous c of the room, depending on type of performance. On top of the stage, the reflectors that are hanging from the ceiling direct the sound toward the audience.
2014-2016 Santander, Spain RPBW SITE ARCHITECT AT THE BOTíN CENTRE INTERIORS AND MEP
As a site architect, I was leading most of the details were was required a strong coordina on between MEP and architecture and I was also responsible for the electrical services. As an example, I’ve been working on the coordina on of MEP services in the wooden floor of the main galleries. A large number of electrical boxes and anchor points for artworks were distributed in between the plenum for air condi oning and hidden below the wooden grilles.
2014-2015 Santander, Spain RPBW SITE ARCHITECT AT THE BOTíN CENTRE INTERIORS AND MEP
As a site architect, I was supervising the design and construc on of the structure of the skilight in the second floor gallery, coordina ng the main structural engineer, Arup ligh ng and several subcontractors. A er the installa on of the roof, I’ve been working on the the coordina on of MEP services with the structure, visible through a translucent tex le ceiling. Several services were integrated within the linear tracks: data sockets, sprinklers, light sensors, CCTV camaras and hangers for art. The tex le ceiling, that is diffusing the light into the gallery, was developed as a bespoke detail and required the produc on of several mockups.
2013-2014 Santander, Spain RPBW SITE ARCHITECT AT THE BOTĂN CENTRE PACHINKO
As a fast-track project, the technical design stage for the Bo n Centre was completed on site during the construc on of the building founda ons and tunnel. During the technical design phase, I was mainly responsible for the ‘pachinko’ package, a system of glazed walkways and stairs that connects the two volumes of the building.

2013-2014 Santander, Spain RPBW SITE ARCHITECT AT THE BOTíN CENTRE TRAMPOLINE
As responible of the pachinko package, I coordinated the design of the trampoline with the structural engineers and the fachade subcontractors. The trampoline is the final point of the public walkways and is canlevering 9mt over the sea. In order to limit the expected bouncing of the structure and avoid possible problems of resonance, a mechanical damper will be installed at the p of the trampoline. A mockup to simulate the “feeling” of the trampoline with and without the damper was produced and tested in Del .
2013-2014 Santander, Spain RPBW SITE ARCHITECT AT THE BOTíN CENTRE MAIN STRUCTURE AND MEP
As a site architect, I was responsible for the main structure of the building. Together with the main structural engineer, I was coordina ng the structure with architecture and MEP. At this stage, the Revit model was a very important tool to prevent or solve the clashes and to coordinate different services in a o en very reduced space.
2013-2014 Santander, Spain RPBW SITE ARCHITECT AT THE BOTĂN CENTRE TUNNEL
While we were comple ng the technical design package, I was also leading the design and later on supervising the construc on of the 200mt tunnel. The tunnel opened in 2014 on the expected date and together with the increased surface of the park it oers a be er accessibility to the waterfront of Santander bay. The complex geometry of the entrances, the 5mt high concrete panels and a 30mt sliding door to access the loading bay of the Centro Bo n are some of the interes ng feautures of this infrastructure.

However, few elements remain unvaried durign the whole process and define the essence of the project: - the fact that the volumes are raised from the ground floor, to allow the publilc to reach the waterfront; - the overhang on the sea; - the division of the program into two volumes (exhibi on and educa on); - the existence of a central axis to connect the two volumes and establish a strong rela on with the urban pa ern of the city.
