Map of Baden-W端rttemberg & Freiburg im Breisgau

With

a superficie of 35,751.65 km2, BadenW端rttemberg is located in the southwestern part of Germany to the east of the Upper Rhine, it is the third largest of the 16 German federal states in both area and population. Is divided in four Administrative Districts (Regierungsbezirke), which one of them is Freiburg im Breisgau, the sunniest city in Germany. The city of Freiburg, is surrounded by many hills located on the western edge of the Black Forest in the Upper Rhine Plain. This beautiful landscape and the close sector of Wasenweiler (Kaisersthul) correspond to two important spots that concentrate high diversity of resident and migratory birds.

FAMILY CHARACTERISTICS OF BIRDS

Here are a shape-code of the main Orders and Families present in this guide.

The major

group are represented by Passeriformes Order, with more than 30 species.

Die Entenvögel ORDER: ANSERIFORMES FAMILY: Anatidae This order includes geese, ducks and swans. Their body shape is typically designed to allow them to float on water in an upright posture, with their legs paddling beneath. They have feet adapted for paddling and walking. Their diet include mainly plants, insects, seeds, bulbs and crustaceans. The primary habitats for birds in this order include lakes, ponds, wetlands, rivers and even artificial habitats in urban areas.

Die Schreitvögel ORDER: CICONIIFORMES. FAMILY: Ardeidae-Ciconiidae Members of this order includes the herons, egrets and storks. These wading birds generally have long necks, long legs, short tails and long spear-shaped bills. Herons have powder down, a type of feather that is not shed but becomes powder which conditions and protects the other feathers.

Die Greifvögel ORDER: FALCONIFORMES. FAMILY: Accipitridae – Falconidae Birds of prey such as hawks, eagles, kites and falcons. They have strong and curved talons. Their bills have hooked tips, sharp edges and a fleshy cere at the base. Members of this order have keen vision, are strong flyers, and are diurnal hunters. Their diet includes snakes, invertebrates, fish, birds, mammals and carrion. Sexes usually have similar plumage and the female is often larger than the male. One to six eggs are laid in a large, bulky nest. The young are semiprecocial with down and open eyes upon hatching. 14

2013

Die Tauben ORDER: COLUMBIFORMES. FAMILY: Columbidae Pigeons and doves have small heads, fleshy cere, short neck, soft, dense plumage, a large crop, and short legs. All are monogamous, lay one to two eggs, and secrete a substance known as "pigeon milk" to feed their young. Pigeons, unlike other birds, can drink by sucking up water, without needing to tilt the head back. The nestlings are altricial at birth. These birds are proficient fliers but spend a lot of time on the ground and on perches. live in a wide variety of places including urban areas, gardens, all kinds of vegetation, forests, rocky ground and open areas. Are typically plant feeders, eating fruits, seeds and parts of plants.

Die Spechte ORDER: PICIFORMES. FAMILY: Picidae The bill of woodpeckers is long and chisel-like. They generally have a stiff pointed tail and short legs. All members of this order are cavity dwellers. The young are naked and blind at birth, or altricial. While known as insect feeders, some of the members of this order eat fruit. For habitats, this group of birds prefer woodlands, forest, scrub and grassland.

Die Singvรถgel ORDER: PASSERIFORMES. FAMILY: Tyrannidae-Hirundinidae-Corvidae-Paridae-Sittidae-CerthiidaeCinclidae-Trogloditidae-Mimidae-Turdidae-Sylviidae- ombyllidae- PasseridaeFringiilidae. They could be coloured birds, often whit elaborate songs. Their bodies are usually stoutish or slightly elongate and they are often small to medium in size. Generally are fast fliers, often displaying rapid, short bursts of flight. They are also well adapted for life among tree-filled environments, so they are highly skilled at navigating branches and flower gardens. Used diverse environments, such as forested areas and scrub or grasslands. Food items include insects and spiders, nectar, seeds, fruits and small invertebrates.

FOREST & PARKS BIRDS

© Schlossberg view from Münster platz

Freiburg is recognized for being a “green city”. For that reason, the presence of the city in a “green belt” permits the creation and presence of several garten spots, urban and natural parks, cultural landscapes and nature reserves that allow to find diverse species of resident and migratories birds. In this chapter discover the main birds that we can find in native forest and urban parks. Some species are specialist in use old trees like the Schwarzpecht and other species like the Amsel use both canopy and understory. Some interesting areas close to the city include places such as Schlossberg, the old and general cemetery, Mooswald-Nord, Valentins Wald, Möslepark and the natural conservation area "Freiburger Rieselfeld" in the west.

Some interesting places 1

Schwabentor view, next to Schlossberg. This area present a beautiful view of the city and the same time an easy route to walk and to do birdwatching. Two interesting areas is a short trekking to the 30 meter-high tower in Schlossberg mountain. The second route is walking from the “panoramic view” of t the city through the forest to St. Ottilien.

2 Valentins Wald view, in the sector of Wiehre. This green area covers a big extension between Littenweiler, Wiehre and Günterstald. It is possible to do different trekking through the forest and reach the top of the mountain at more of 600 meters of high.

3 Roßkopf area, between Gundelfingen and Elbet. This mountain of the Black forest had 737 meter of high and several trails ideal to do trekking looking for raptors and woodpeckers.

The male and female are similar in coloration, with an orange breast and face lined with grey, brown upper parts and a whitish bell The upper parts are brownish, and the belly whitish, while the legs and feet are brown. The bill and eyes are black. The Robin is diurnal, although has been reported to be active hunting insects on moonlit nights or near artificial light at night. Male Robins are noted for their highly aggressive territorial behavior. They will attack other males that stray into their territories, and have been observed attacking other small birds without apparent provocation.

OPEN AREAS & FOREST EDGES

Š Way to Stegen

The transition or edge between two habitats (ecotone) is a good place to find high diversity. Also, open areas offer

the possibility to see raptors, such as the case of the family Falconidae, looking for preys. Besides, we can see small birds in beautiful display to attract to female or find territory (e.g. Passeriformes). In the surroundings of Freiburg, is possible to find several open areas related with cultural landscapes, that included grassland next to forest and parks, such as the area way to GĂźnterstald, the road to Stegen, Gundelfingen and all the way next to Dreisam.

In different parts of Freiburg it is possible to see birds flying. This is an important point at the moment to identify species, especially during the migratory season of some birds such as swallows (e.g. rauchschwalbe), swifts (e.g. mauersegler) or raptors (e.g. rotmilan).

I 'm a veterinarian by profession,

but have done research on wildlife in northern and southern Chile. Since October 2012, I've been doing a M.Sc. in Forstwissenschaften/Forest Science (Wildlife & Biodiversity line) at the University of Freiburg in Germany. So far I've gained a good knowledge of the birds of Germany, which gives me the chance of making this brief photographic guide. 108
