General Plan Scale 1/2000

Boavista Masterplan, Oporto, Portugal

The area under consideration for an urban intervention is located south of an important avenue (Boavista Av.) at the transition point from a traditional city block scheme to a modern urban layout, the Boavista Housing Park (Parque Habitacional da Boavista, 1962). It’s proximity to the city center, leisure facilities (Bessa Stadium), cultural facilities (Serralves Museum and Casa da Música), river, sea and main routes make it a privileged place for living. The strategy aims to respond and connect the different urban configurations, addressing its problems and seize the opportunity to create a strong dynamic public space system that holds character. For this purpose an exception in the volumetric solution is introduced: a tower block arises from a corner of the stable square plaza. This attention focus takes place at the center of the block in order to stimulate fruition and highlight a critical moment of the solution. Disrupting the orthogonal layout, a block set on “pilloti” relates the various intentions: _connect the traditional and modern urban schemes; _compensate the different distances to the avenue; _enforce the geometry of the new street; _enhance the tension created by the tower; _zoning the plaza without segmenting it.

Boavista Urban Housing, Oporto, Portugal This urban housing design reveals a clear social agenda: within its walls one finds various apartment typologies that are to accommodate different individuals /families. For this purpose, and making the most of the buildings urban and geometric circumstance, this housing system is composed by: a central group of two story apartments accessed by galleries over a small group of commercial spaces; an edge and corner groups of larger apartments that are accessed by the stairwell that serves the galleries; a few ground floor apartments accessed by a street where commercial use is inadequate; finally, above these ground floor apartments a similar two story apartment scheme that of the main group. A plaza and favorable light to the south. A private garden to the north. In order to benefit from both situations the social areas of the two story apartment are accommodated on the upper floor. Naturally this solution complicates daily access to the kitchen for groceries transport. However the advantage of having views over the plaza from the living room and private garden from the dining area of the kitchen was considered to overpower this functional particularity. Has an academic exercise it was important to question housing typologies and experiment different solutions in order to conceive a complex housing unit capable of accommodating diverse identities and needs. Even if rather silly at some points (for instance the almost impossible living room of the two story apartments) this design reflects the restlessness necessary for thinking contemporary urban housing.

The place is a diverse urban setting. Sidónio Pais Avenue to the south gives the site a vibrant urban feel. The block’s perimeter is of traditional city scheme but of diverse 85.36 levels of consolidation. An overpass road bring a sense of velocity to the area. A condemned building reminds us a close past of industrial occupation. The strategy is to continue the block’s east formation, reacting to the west formation, that even though fragmented, advances all the way to the avenue, leaving an open space between. It is intended that the building follows a hyper contextualizing logic. That it follows the same genetic code that composes the formation it continues: high density street front; low density occupation of the inner block. The building, formed as a physical and logical continuation of the block’s east formation claims independence by dividing itself into two “arms”. The swimming pool areas, technically and volumetrically more demanding, become the high density reaction to the city block, twisting at the end to protect 85.32 the building from the overpass road. The gymnasium results from the reinterpretation of the classic inner city block. It’s main spaces are articulated by patios that lower the density of the group. The volumetric solution adopted creates a central public space, between the new building and the existing west formation of the block. This central space is to become a mainly green space, in which parking spaces are accommodated. This green area has two ambitions. Firstly it is to establish a a moment of pause between the two block formations, east and west, allowing for the least consolidated one to grow accordingly to the needs of the city. Secondly it proposes a contrary occupation of the inner block than usual. By allocating the parking spaces there fruition from inside out is stimulated. The proposal intends to act /react on /to a consolidated axis, leaving the rest of the block free for evolution. The intervention follows themes from the site, both typological as well as geometrical, giving new meaning and life.

Dance Lab, Glasgow, United Kingdom 48m of Clyde’s Riverfront. Forty-eight. The Clyde & Fox Site is at proeminent urban situation with great potencial both to participate on the River´s regeneration as well as to enrich the depth of the ´River Walk` towards the city centre. A Dance Lab is taken as an instrument for urban life dinamization, setting off new activities that will promote urban regeneration. The proposal’s urban moves are two: the establishment of a clear relationship between Clyde and Fox Street, through the building; the regeneration of the Clyde waterfront by relandscaping and introducing a new moment of street crossing that connects the suspension brigde and the buidings main entrance. The first is given by the two foyers that cross the buiding, being the main one that actually allows a physical connection of the two streets and comes in sequence of the suspension bridge, leaving to the second foyer only visual permeability. The second follows this connectivity ideal. Link Clyde’s ´Street Walk`to Clyde’s ´River Walk` using subtil ramps that connect existing moments, such as the Suspension Bridge, to new ones, like the urban balconies that relates to the perpendicular street. The rest is landscaping... The design process begins considering the wish of establishing a relationship between Fox and Clyde Street through the site, attempting to adress the diferent scales of each street as well as the diferent densities of the site’s block. The solution comes as a three bar scheme, in which the external ones relate to the city fabric, adressing it’s issues, leaving the midle one to mediate the other two.

General Plan and Elevation Crossing the site’s needs with the programme to accommodate, this midle bar comes to mediate the private/ public dialogue. To each one of the spaces it creates is atributed the degree of public and private. The midle bar tilts both in reaction to the diferent scales of the surronding ones as well as to create apropriate ambiences to each space.: the main public foyer opens up to a glazed cover; the private foyer, sees it’s walls closing in tight as they progress in height leaving but a strip of a window open at the top, giving this space the intimate feel it requires to become the main dweling space for dancers. The side bars have their precedent in Glasgow’s sandstone buildings. Whereas the central bar assumes a diferent caracter from the surronding arquitecture strongly supported by Kolhaas Casa da Musica. The diference in programatic interpretation lies in the assumption that a dance school’s auditorium being used with reduced frequency wouldn´t activate this central space on a daily basis. Thus the café /bar takes this space making the most of the oportunity of creating a new special place in Glasgow. The precedent influences also materiality: white concrete contrasting with the stone walls of the side bars; green glazing at end of the space relating to the river; corrugated glass at the transition space to the auditorium.

Apartment, Oporto, Portugal, collaboration with Architect Michael Miranda

A B

The existing apartment, in a 70’s Heargraves da Costa Macedo’s building, was decaying and out of date regarding it’s compartments. The renewal was to transform the three bedroom flat into a single bedroom apartment. The former big room was given to the living room, providing it with a larger area and south light. The other two room and bathrooms where joined to create a generous suite. With the exception of the living room, all the spaces where designed within almost minimal dimensions, consequence of the geometric circumstance available. The living room, the privileged space of the house, worked out very well, having it’s living area next to a south window, benefiting from it’s warmth, and the dining area next to the kitchen to the north. The central space is a formal transition space, necessary to breathe. The chief architect is at the same time client and interior design expert. His personal taste exhales from the materials, furniture and objects. It is his home, and for those who now him this is clear. The collaboration occurred because of the client /architect’s lack of availability to develop the necessary technical drawings, but became much more: he accepted various solutions that solved problems discovered by detailing the hand draw schemes, several furniture designs and construction supervision from demolition to screwing the last light bulb in.

Louriçal House, Pombal, Portugal, Client Rui Rico dos Santos

“Perhaps it is good to keep a few dreams for a house we will live in later, always later, so late we will not have time to built it. A house that was final, symmetric to the birth house, would prepare thoughts and no More dreams, severe thoughts, sad thoughts. It is better to live in the provisional than in the definitive.”

Gaston Bachelard

The house’s relationship to the surroundings is the genesis of the design. One wanted to understand the village’s morphology in order to intervene coherently. So we can say the initial position is contextualizing. Searching a continuity relationship with the village’s street facing buildings - has such the house is street facing, but as well the rural nature of the landscape - small pavilions are displaced as support to agriculture, one achieves an integration that transcends morphology and formality. However it is through a formalism that this integration is achieved. The house is composed of different volumes, functional boxes, that establish a relationship with the surroundings accordingly to their nature. The garage and service volume is joined to the neighbor wall. The bedroom volume faces the calm village street. The living volume faces the surrounding aqueduct. Each element explores the potential of the site, critically adjusting it’s configuration and functional nature to it. Light, views, accessibility, privacy... They are all different themes when considered in an urban setting or a rural one.
