The goal of the project was the activation of processes of urban regeneration and reuse of abandoned spaces in the city trough the development of the cultural infrastructure. It has been investigated the effectiveness of the integration of cultural policies with those of urban planning, and how to provide tools to support public decisions. The thesis contents workflow: - analysis of the literature regarding the role of culture in the contemporary city, which led to the adoption of the Cultural Planning theories as reference; - development of GIS technology, which allowed the creation of database of the cultural places of the city and to perform Spatial Analysis focused on the accessibility of cultural facilities; - finally, the development of strategies for urban regeneration have provided for the re-use of unused urban places in the suburbs of Bologna. Deep and controversial economical transformations have been hitting Europe. On one side they show a highly destructive potential; on the other side they are the key to undiscovered scenarios once unimaginable. Beneath the remains of ancient systems often lays the opportunity to write new cultures. Shipbuilding industry has been hardly struck by crisis: while great arsenals are in distress, medium and small ones ceased to work time ago. Therefore plenty harbor areas are now in search of a new vocation since they have a strategic role for the urban, economic and landscape value of the city. Which future to imagine for such areas? This is the challenge YAC proposes designers: redesign an old dismissed harbor area in a play-area that can take advantage of the particular situation between the sea and the city. The aim is to offer tourists and citizens a modern and appealing wellness and entertainment centre.

Outside the Box - Low and High Technologies for the Emergencies is a competition focused on identifying design ideas for resolving various problems in emergency situations. At this point in time the emergency has become the norm. During recent years numerous natural phenomena have upset the lives of many communities scattered across the globe. Examples include Fukushima in Japan, Haiti, L’Aquila in Italy and New Orleans in the United States. The Box is a small temporary structure capable of offering various services: a small space for work, a centre of organisation and meetings for governments or other bodies dealing with and managing an emergency. A space that is simultaneously a workstation and information centre open to public, with free wifi and internet access to allow to people remain in touch with the rest of the world. A fundamental role in the elaboration of the design proposal must be entrusted to technology, whether low- or high-tech. The challenge launched by the Competition is also that of uniting two unavoidable aspects of contemporary design: sustainability and parametric design (the use of parametric modelling software to develop three-dimensional models).

The study will investigate, using environmental pressures as a culture medium, the aesthetics of environmental mediators (clothing, body suits, prosthetics) to promote the exercise of personal feeling against the potential emerging in the form of complex-process-performance; sensitivity which is then applied to a system of generation of architectural forms and spaces as models of integration with physiology, culture, patterns of social life, environment.

The location pattern of urban facilities has always been an important factor for the evaluation of public places and their structural patterns. As one of the elements in public structure, cultural facilities have the same valuable importance in arranging and organising the public sphere. The locational distribution of cultural centres, theatre and cinema halls, museums and other complexes have been a fundamental parameter in urban planning as well. It has been taken in consideration two Cities that have been European Capital of Culture in 2000 and 2010, respectively Bologna (Italy) and Istanbul (Turkey). In this study, various types of spatial analysis methods have been used by means of geographic information systems (GIS); particularly trough Networks Analysis and other toolboxes, for example Urban Network Analysis, created by MIT’s researchers Andres Sevtsuk, Michael Mekonnen.

The project takes place in the Bolognese Apennines, a naturalistic park that connects ecologically Florence with Bologna with the aim to revitalize the area. The module is designed to serve as information point for tourist, birdwatch spot or just for relaxing in the middle of the nature. The location where to put these temporary boxes was decided after a careful analysis of the area, taking into account ecological networks, mobility, geomorphology, historical settlements and the presence of wildlife.
