beacon of hope “A place for all different creeds and beliefs; for all different people; for all different religions; for all humankind. A place for all.” The intervention was placed in the center of tanaf’s main street, where an old sacred building stands. This prioritizes the gathering of people over the efficiency of traffic and the memory of the place’s sacredness. It is structured as if the old one has had its roof inverted. Rather than a shelter from rain, it becomes a rain-water collector. Its concentric form is meant to reinforce the idea of togetherness regardless of beliefs. By passing through the outer ring the visitor faces the striking contrast: on the one hand, the outside world in strong sunlight, noisy sounds, reddish sand floor and brick walls; on the other hand, the entirely white inner space involved in quietness and soft light. A small opening at the center of the roof makes way to sunlight and moonlight – the meaningful junction between divine and nature. The new sacred building stands not only as a beacon for hope, but a spiritual and physical support for the present.

inside the fairytale “...everything that you bring to a child (...) must be given in the form of fairy tales, legends, and stories in which everything is endowed with feeling.“ - Steiner, Rudolf As the vessel of a fairytale collection, the proposal works intimately with the perception of reality and fantasy. It is conceived as a vehicle for imagination, such as a book. Each person’s imagination gives life and scenery to it. The project is concealed in the underground, surprising the visitor with a “secret door novel” experience. The old paper factory, river and greenhouses become the improbable doors to the fairytale. Arriving at collodi, visitors would find an almost untouched site. Curiosity and expectations arise. Once inside, textures, materials, geometries incite the imagination in innumerous ways. Tunnels turn into caves, bleachers into mountains, curtains into knights... Likewise the log once destined to light a fire, gets filled with the life of a puppet: the inanimate is waiting for an imaginative mind to be animated. Rather than a simple fairytale vessel, the pinocchio children’s library is the fairytale experience itself.

the urban breather Farming inside a skyscraper. How to verticalize agriculture in the center of one of the worlds largest cities in the world to solve distribution problems and anticipate future land shortage? The major challenge here was to provide enough direct sunlight and ventilation. To achieve this, nature became the inspiration of the project. Such as a tree, the building’s slabs are positioned seeking out for the sun. This is carried out on an ortoganl structure respecting the legal limits of the plot. The same structural system may be aplied in different regions using other slab distribution based on the sun’s position. In addition, a central atrium aids the natural ventilation. Closed programs such as administration and storage are in the lower levels, leaving the sunnier upper stories to agriculture. To control sunlight, the facade features an external structure on which screen printed glass panels are positioned wherever and whenever needed. Furthermore, the building has access to the Trianon Masp metro station, linking it directly to São Paulo’s main food distribution center: CEASA.

social catalyst As electrical cars become a reality, charging stations become more and more necessary. How should these charging stations be? And what should we do with the minimum 45 minutes required to charge a car? The project was designed for two different scenarios: city and country. In the city, it occupies parking lots on the street. Its structure, a simple modulated roof covers the car and the sidewalk if and whenever necessary. Programs such as a cafe, public bathrooms, benches and many other can occur under this roof. The objective is to become more than a simple charging station and promote social interaction. In the country-side the additional program becomes even more important. Travelers can stop to have a meal or even rest inside “capsule dorms. This provides support for long travels and helps to prevent accidents caused by sleepiness. Furthermore, its components are modular metal parts that can be assembled on site and transported in a standard pickup. This is an essential feature to provide countrywide accessibility.

The site is in the north portion of the bela vista neighborhood (são paulo, brazil), an undeveloped and forgoten triangular shaped urban isle, caused by the massive road system around it. Treating the island’s symptoms through a few strategic interventions, both in the urban and architectural scale, the aim is to recover this “urban organism”, hence “Recovery Through Incision”. The viaduct crossings are a key aspect, serving as development vectors. Dismantling the idea of a building with its boundaries between public and private, outside and inside, main entrances, elevator cores... The proposed “sample project” for one of the viaduct crossings dissolves itself into the urban tissue in a liquid tectonic. Commerce, institutions and large flux programs are located in these crossings. This way it becomes inviting, fluid and full of life and movement, promoting the crossing of pedestrians and development from the surrounding regions to the inside of the island.
