University Gardner-Webb’s journey from a boarding high school to a thriving regional University is marked by remarkable growth, great determination, and unyielding perseverance. In 1903, the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations conceived a vision of an institution of learning where young students would enjoy “the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” On December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School, Gardner-Webb’s predecessor, was chartered. Even today, the University’s relationship with area churches is still strong. The institution was transformed into a junior college in 1928, and only survived the catastrophic Great Depression through God’s providential grace and the tireless efforts of numerous trustees and local champions of Christian education. Then in 1942, North Carolina Governor and Shelby native O. Max Gardner began devoting time and energy toward strengthening and guiding the College. In recognition of his efforts, those of his wife, Fay Webb Gardner, and their families, the school’s name was changed to GardnerWebb College. After World War II, the College experienced steady physical growth and academic development. New buildings sprang up, enrollments increased, and by the end of the 1960s, the College was ready to transition to a four-year institution. In 1971, Gardner-Webb earned its full accreditation as a senior college, and nine years later it began offering its first master’s degree in education.

Gardner-Webb Dr. A. Frank Bonner President Furman, 1969 10th Year

Born in Durham, North Carolina, Dr. A. Frank Bonner grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. The son of Francis Wesley Bonner (deceased) and Nilaouise Carnes Bonner, he was raised in a college environment, almost literally in the shadows of the campus of Furman University (Greenville, S.C). His father retired from Furman as Vice President and Provost, having served Furman for over thirty years as professor and, eventually, as chief academic officer. Bonner’s parents instilled in him the values he still holds dear. To this day, his father is his model for everything that a teacher, academic leader, and university administrator should be. Bonner graduated in 1969 from Furman with a B.A. degree in English. Coincidentally, his major professor was Dr. Phil L. Elliott, son of the legendary president of Gardner-Webb from 1943 until 1961, Phillip Lovin Elliott. After Furman, Bonner earned the M.A. from the University of Georgia in 1971, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. His specialty is Victorian literature, primarily the poetry of Alfred Tennyson, and eighteenth-century British literature, with a special interest in Jonathan Swift. In 1974, Bonner began his academic career as a faculty member at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. He was particularly active in civic life in Anderson, most notably as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Anderson County School District Five. Bonner was assigned various administrative responsibilities at Anderson and, immediately prior to coming to Gardner-Webb, was Associate Dean for Special Programs. In 1987, Bonner came to Gardner-Webb as Vice President for Academic Affairs. His role later evolved into Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and then Provost and Senior Vice President. He was named President in May 2005 and took office on July 1. Bonner has been heavily involved in accreditation work through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), serving on more than thirty accreditation committees, most of those as the committee chair. He is a member of the SACSCOC Board of Trustees and serves on the Compliance and Reports Committee. He has also served on the nominating committee for the Commission on Colleges and has chaired four NCAA Division I Recertification visiting committees. Bonner is currently Vice President of the Big South Conference, Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. While at Gardner-Webb, Bonner has remained active in civic affairs, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America Piedmont Council. He is a past chair of the Cleveland County Chamber, a Rotary past President, a Paul Harris Fellow, and he has been a board member for numerous organizations. He is a member of First Baptist Church, Shelby, where he teaches Sunday School and serves as a Deacon. After twenty-two years in the United States Army Reserve, Bonner retired at the rank of Colonel. Bonner is married to Florence Dell (Flossie) Black of Chester, South Carolina, also a Furman graduate. She is a retired high school mathematics teacher. They have two daughters, Alison Bonner Dalton of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Florence Bonner Crawford of Fort Myers, Florida. The Bonners have six grandchildren.

Administration Chuck Burch Vice President For Athletics Gardner-Webb, 1979 18th Year

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 18th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 31st year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Runnin’ Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in GardnerWebb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athletics facilities and the addition of seven new sports since arriving in 1997. The most recent addition, women’s lacrosse, will begin play in 2014-2015. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last seven academic years. In 2009-2010, Gardner-Webb posted its highest finish in the annual Big South Conference Sasser Cup, taking No. 4 in the final standings of the all-sports race. The women’s basketball team captured its first Big South Tournament title, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. Two other teams – women’s soccer and baseball – advanced to the league tournament title game in their respective seasons as well. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-2007. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of fans across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football and tennis teams, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 55, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is Associate Provost for Professional and Graduate Studies at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, Danielle and Amy.

Athletic An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training faculty and staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 21 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of nine certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at GardnerWebb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program recently completed its full accreditation by CAATE, marking an exciting moment in the program’s history. Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must complete a three-part examination conducted by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s Board of Certification to become Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, GardnerWebb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

Lacrosse

Spangler Stadium Ernest W. Spangler Stadium serves as the home venue for both Gardner-Webb football and lacrosse. With a seating capacity of 8,000 and a brand new artificial turf surface for the 2014-2015 season, Spangler Stadium stands apart as one of the finiest venues in the nation for FCS Football and NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse. The stadium was built in 1966 with a natural grass surface, which has undergone several reconditioning projects over the past 40 years. The stadium benefitted from a major renovation in 2004, which resulted in the sparkling GWU Football Center and an overhaul of the Hamrick Field House – which now houses offices for men’s and women’s soccer, track and field and women’s lacrosse.

Runnin’ Bulldog Lacrosse

Origins

of the

Game

The origin of women’s lacrosse can be traced back to the Indians of North America, who played a form of the men’s game in their preparation for battle. However, it was not until the mid-19th century that the English first played a unique style of a stick and ball game solely for women. Competing girls’ schools began playing this modern game in the 1860’s. Many of the general rules of play in those first games resemble those used today.

1982 Umass Lacrosse

The Basics Women’s lacrosse is a non-contact game played by 12 players: a goalkeeper, five attackers and six defenders. The game is played using sticks comprised of a hollow metal shaft, typically measuring 35.5 to 43.25 inches long, and a molded plastic head with a shallow netted pocket. These sticks are used to carry, throw and shoot a ball along a field with the objective of scoring goals. A goal counts as one point and is awarded when the ball completely crosses the opposing goal line between the posts and under the crossbar. The team that scores the greatest number of goals in the allotted time is declared the winner of the game.

What Do I

need

To Play?

To play a game of women’s lacrosse, you will need a lacrosse stick, a solid rubber lacrosse ball, a team uniform with kilt or shorts, gloves, sneakers or cleats, a mouth guard and protective goggles. Goalkeepers wear extra padding in addition to a full helmet.

A game is generally divided into two thirty-minute halves with a ten-minute break in between. Each half begins with a “draw” at the center circle between two opposing players. Team captains choose playing sides based on a coin flip before the game, and change sides at halftime. If the score is tied at the end of regular playing time, both teams will have a fiveminute rest and toss a coin for choice of ends. Six minutes (two three-minute periods) of stop-clock overtime will be played (Overtime one). The clock will be stopped after three minutes of play in order for teams to change ends with no delay for coaching. The game will be restarted by a center draw. The team that is leading at the end of six minutes wins the game. If the teams are still tied after six minutes have elapsed, the teams will have a threeminute rest and change ends. The winner will then be decided on a “sudden-victory” stop-clock overtime of not more than six minutes in length with the teams changing ends after three minutes (Overtime two). The game will be restarted by a center draw. The team scoring the first goal wins the game. Play will continue with “sudden-victory” stop-clock overtime periods of six minutes in length, with three minutes in between and a change of ends, until a winning goal is scored.

Rules Of The Game Women’s lacrosse begins with a draw at the center position. The ball is placed between two horizontally held crosses (sticks) at the center of the field. At the sound of the whistle, the ball is flung into the air as the crosses are pulled up and away. A draw is used to start each half and after each goal. The collegiate game is 60 minutes long, each half being 30 minutes. The high school girl’s game is 50 minutes long, each half being 25 minutes. In both collegiate and high school play, teams are allowed one timeout per half.

When a whistle blows, all players must stop in place. When a ball is ruled out of play, the player closest to the ball gets possession when play is resumed. Loss of possession may occur if a player deliberately runs or throws the ball out of play. Rough checks, and contact to the body with the crosse or body, are not allowed. Field players may pass, catch or run with the ball in their crosse. A player may gain possession of the ball by dislodging it from an opponent’s crosse with a check. A check is a controlled tap with a crosse on an opponent’s crosse in an attempt to knock the ball free. The player must be one step in front of her opponent in order to check. No player may reach across an opponent’s body to check the handle of a crosse when she is even with or behind that opponent.

Rules Of The Game A player may not protect the ball in her crosse by cradling so close to her body or face so as to make a legal, safe check impossible for the opponent. All legal checks must be directed away from a seven-inch sphere or “bubble” around the head of the player. No player is allowed to touch the ball with her hands except the goalkeeper when she is within the goal circle. A change of possession may occur if a player gains a distinct advantage by playing the ball off her body.

A slow whistle occurs when the offense has entered the critical scoring area and the defense has committed a major foul. A flag is thrown but no whistle is sounded so that the offense has an opportunity to score a goal. A whistle is blown when a goal is scored or the scoring opportunity is over. An immediate whistle is blown when a major foul, obstruction or shooting space occurs, which jeopardizes the safety of a player.

Fouls are categorized as major or minor, and the penalty for fouls is a “free position.” For major fouls, the offending player is placed four meters behind the player taking the free position. For a minor foul, the offending player is placed four meters off, in the direction from which she approached her opponent before committing the foul, and play is resumed. When a minor foul is committed in the critical scoring area, the player with the ball has an indirect free position, in which case the player must pass first.

The Field Of Play

The Field Of Play • Covers a similar footprint to a soccer pitch, measuring between 110 and 120 yards from end line to end line and between 60 and 70 yards from sideline to sideline. • Goals are placed between 90 and 100 yards apart measuring from goal line to goal line. • There must be at least 10 yards of space bewteen the goal line and the end line at all points along the entire width of the field. • The playing field itself is primarily composed of three areas: two attacking zones and a neutral midfield zone. Within each attacking zone, both an eight-meter arc and a 12-meter fan extend out from the goal. • A goal circle measuring 2.6 meters (8’6”) also encircles each goal. No player other than the goalie is permitted inside this circle at any point during the game except defenders when their team does not possess the ball. • Perhaps the most critical attribute of the field is the restraining line, which marks the boundary between the neutral zone and each attacking zone, and extends the full width of the field at a distance of 30 yards from each goal line. • In the center of the field, a circle with a radius of nine meters surrounds the center dot. In the center of this circle, a line measuring 9’11” in length is drawn parallel to the goal lines. • Along one sideline, space is alloted for substitutions, team benches, coaches boxes, a penalty area and the scorer’s table. The substitution area is located in front of the scorer’s table and centered on the midfield line. • Each team bench area is confined to the space between the subsitution area and that team’s restraining line while staying behind the scorer’s table. Coaches must remain within an area on their bench’s sideline between the the end of the subsitution area and their end line.

The Big South Conference For more than 30 years, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” On April 24, 1983, Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South and less than four months later on August 21, the Big South Conference was formed when Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop committed to the new League. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted fullfledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid -- an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 18 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to unprecedented new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership with double-digit member institutions for six consecutive years. Recent additions include High Point, GardnerWebb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 800 annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 325 All-Americans, has reached the quarterfinals in the FCS Playoffs as well as the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball; has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf; had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship eight times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection; had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals; had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country; had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice; has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006; has had nine NFL Draft picks; and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No.

2015 Media Guide

3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reached the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2011-12, the Big South had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans. In 2012-13, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams – and two playoff wins -- for the first time, had a women’s basketball team win a postseason game for the first time since 2005, had a Leaguerecord four men’s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selected for NCAA Regional play. This past season produced the League’s first FCS playoff quarterfinalist, had four postseason wins in men’s basketball, had its second women’s golf team qualify for nationals, and tied the Conference-record with 13 Academic All-Americans. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s Tamas Kovacs qualified for the 2012 London Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams has played in the NBA since 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won eight PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Two former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2014 (Eddie Butler and Tommy LaStella), while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA three years ago. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. As part of the League’s 30th anniversary celebration in 2013-14, All-Decade Teams were recognized for the first time in each sport. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past five years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 120 Academic All-Americans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last five years.
