GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY Gardner-Webb University (GWU), located on 250 acres in Boiling Springs, N.C., is a private, four-year, NCAA Division I institution affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. GWU has been recognized as one of only 134 institutions in America on the John Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges. GWU enrolls over 4,000 students from 33 states and 34 foreign countries in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs. Small classes in a personal learning environment allow the university to feature a 15-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT DR. A. FRANK BONNER Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his sixth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005. After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with an outstanding faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS CHUCK BURCH Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 14th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 29th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last three academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 53, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and curremtly serves as the Dean of the Graduate School as well as a professer in the Physical Education Wellness and Sports Studies Department. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University, Danielle, a junior soccer player at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (16).

ASSOCIATE A.D./SENIOR WOMEN’S ADMINISTRATOR PAM SCRUGGS Senior Women’s Administrator Pam Scruggs is in her 31st year of service with Gardner-Webb University athletics, and remains one of the most vital components of the program’s success. Scruggs has served as Associate Athletics Director and SWA since 2000. Scurggs provides the athletics department with consistent and dependable performance in a number of crucial administrative areas. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring the athletics department budgets, monitoring the operation of the department’s women’s varsity programs, overseeing game-day operations and assisting in the administration of the University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs plays an invaluable role in the success of Bulldog athletics. Pam and her husband, John, have one daughter, Bonnie, a freshman at Gardner-Webb University.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY 2010 SEASON PREVIEW The 2010 Gardner-Webb University Volleyball team will be full of youth, as head coach Chris Phillips’ squad consists of five freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors and no seniors. However, the young Runnin’ Bulldogs will not lack in experience, as all seven of the returners saw action last season with five of those returners being starters. Juniors Laura Wilcox, Evan Moffitt and Lauren Evans will all be asked to be immediate leaders on the floor in 2010, while sophomores Molly Rhyne, Carol Solano, Melissa Richie and Dominique Bray will all be asked to up their game from their freshmen campaigns’ only a year ago. “We will be young again, but sometimes that works to your advantage,” commented Coach Phillips. “The good part about being young is that eventually you become older and more experienced.” MIDDLE BLOCKERS The strength of the 2010 Runnin’ Bulldogs volleyball team will lie in the middle, as Coach Phillips’ squad has strength in numbers with four middle blockers that will see time at the net. Junior Laura Wilcox, a two-time Big South All-Conference Second-Team selection and the 2008 Big South Freshman of the Year, headlines the GWU middle blocking core, as she led the team last season with 446 points and an attack percentage of .335 on the year. The twoyear starter, who was tied for the team lead with 368 kills and was second in total blocks with 60 a year ago, will look to not only continue to improve in the middle for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in her junior season, but also help guide the GWU team as a whole as one of only three upperclassman on the roster in 2010. “What’s wonderful about Laura is that she has two full seasons under her belt going into her junior year,” continued Coach Phillips. “The team will look to her as one of our leaders and I think she is ready for that role.” With the departure of Jessica Clayton to graduation and the transition of junior Evan Moffitt to her more natural position of setter, depth at the middle blocker spot comes by way of three freshmen in Amanda Murphy, Emily Holte and Tyler Cockrell. The trio of newcomers bring with them a slew of credentials, including five All-State team selections, four All-District team selections, two All-Conference Team selections and over five MVP awards, and more importantly experience in playing at the national level in AAU and club tournaments. “Wow, how many times do you get to sign three middles in a recruiting year,” Coach Phillips stated. “Each middle brings their own style and strengths – Amanda has great instincts at the net; Emily brings a big swing; while Tyler is quick and explosive. One if not all three of them will find themselves on the court this season.” OUTSIDE HITTER The outside hitter position is perhaps where most of the experience lies for the Runnin’ Bulldogs squad in 2010, led by returners Molly Rhyne and Melissa Richie. Rhyne, who was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team last season, was tied for the team lead with 368 kills on the year. Rhyne, who saw started and played in every set for the Runnin’ Bulldogs last season, will be asked once again to shoulder most of the scoring load for GWU in 2010. “Molly had a year of consistent court time last year, which will help her to be better prepared for this season,” continued Coach Phillips. “I look for her to be a smarter player with different types of shots.” Fellow sophomore returner Melissa Richie also saw quality time in her freshman season in 2009, tallying 234 kills, 265 digs, 46 aces and 21 total blocks on the year. Like Rhyne, Richie will look to continue to improve and grow from her first season a year ago, looking to be more consist both offensively and defensively for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. “Melissa will find herself back at the starting outside position again this season,” stated Phillips. “She brings a good tempo swing with improved shot selection as well as ball control.” Newcomer Erin Anderson should compete immediately for playing time, as the freshman helped guide her high school team to three consecutive district championships.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY 2010 SEASON PREVIEW “Erin might be our surprise player,” Phillips commented. “She is quick and explosive off the floor. She’s a player who has great versatility which could get her some quality court time.” RIGHT SIDE On the right side, sophomore Carol Solano returns, where last season she led the Runnin’ Bulldogs in total blocks with 74, which ranks fourth most in a single season in GWU’s Division I history. Solano, who was tabbed the Big South Defensive Player of the Week once last season, will once again be asked to be the defensive stopper at the net for GWU in 2010. “Carol continues to improve every time she steps on the court,” continued Phillips. “She brings a big block and a long swing and we’re excited to she how she grows again this season.” Freshman Meg Taylor will also see time on the right side for Coach Phillips in 2010, as the newcomer from nearby Spartanburg, S.C. brings a lot of experience and a strong work ethic to a very young Gardner-Webb squad. “Meg is athletic, strong and has good hands for a right side,” said Phillips. “She is going to be a great asset this season.” SETTER With the departure of four year starter Regina Feagin, GWU’s Division I career leader in set assists, the setter position will be filled by junior Evan Moffitt. Moffitt, who was moved from setter and right side hitter to the middle blocker position last year in the Runnin’ Bulldogs preseason camp, returns to her natural position in 2010. Moffitt, who saw some time at the setter position in 2008 as a freshman, posted 144 set assists that season and currently has recorded 183 career assists which ranks seventh in GWU’s Division I history. “Evan will finally get her chance to play the position she was recruited to play,” stated Phillips. “Evan brings intelligence, speed and an attack with her into the setting position. I look for Evan to be a solid leader for us this year.” DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST/LIBERO With Brett Wilson, who stepped up her game last season with a team-high 380 digs in her senior season, having graduated, Coach Phillips will once more look to someone new to fill the libero or defensive specialist spot in 2010. Junior Lauren Evans and sophomore Dominique Bray could both see time at the libero spot, as both have worked hard in the off-season to improve their ball handling and passing skills. Evans, who has battled injuries her entire career, will look to play more on the defensive side this season. Bray, who was recovering from off-season surgery for most of last year, could also see time at the outside hitter spot for Coach Phillips in 2010, as she is very explosive and has a great understanding of the game. “Dom and Lauren are both still working on transitioning into learning the libero position,” commented Phillips. “Both players are making great strides.” SCHEDULE Gardner-Webb will once more have a very challenging schedule in 2010, one that sends them all the way across the country to state of California. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will take on a handful of very tough non-conference opponents highlighted by the University of California, the University of San Diego and Weber State, as well as a slew of very challenging matches against regional opponents in Davidson, UNC Greensboro, Kennesaw State, Wofford and USC Upstate. The Runnin’ Bulldogs have improved over each of its first two years in the Big South Conference and will look to continue to do so against a very difficult conference schedule in 2010, one in which Coach Phillips and her squad have come accustomed to playing over the last few seasons.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY 2010 GARDNER-WEBB COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH CHRIS PHLLIPS SIXTH YEAR Head Coach Chris Phillips begins her sixth season with the Gardner-Webb volleyball team. She led the team to a seven-win improvement last season and guided the Lady Bulldogs to their fourth straight post-season appearance since making is first-ever postseason appearance in the 2006 season. Phillips came to Boiling Springs after spending 11 years as the head coach at Liberty and five seasons guiding the program at Lincoln Junior College in Lincoln, Ill. Gardner-Webb’s volleyball program picked up 12 wins in 2009, jumping up from five wins the season before. The young Lady Bulldog squad picked up a handful of firsts in the 2009 season, as GWU defeated Coastal Carolina and the Maryland-Eastern Shore for the first time in the program’s history and also picked up its first-ever Big South regular series sweep with its two wins over Radford. For the second straight season, middle blocker Laura Wilcox earned a spot on the All-Conference Second-Team, while freshman outside hitter Molly Rhyne was named to the All-Freshman Team, GWU’s second selection in as many years. Sophomore Evan Moffitt was named to the Big South All-Academic Team, giving GWU three student-athletes with postseason conference honors. Setter Regina Feagin finished out her career in 2009, rewriting the record books in GWU’s Division I history. Feagin is first in GWU’s Division I history in career sets played (467), first in career assists (4795), first in career service aces (157) and third in career digs (1273). Feagin also holds GWU’s Division I history single season records for assists (1348) and assists per set (11.74). In 2008, Phillips guided the program through its first season in the Big South Conference. She helped the team pick up wins in each of its first two conference matches, including the program’s first-ever victory over Winthrop. Under her direction, middle blocker Laura Wilcox earned six New Balance Freshman of the Week nods en route to being named the Big South Freshman of the Year in addition to making the All-Conference Second Team. In 2007, the Lady Bulldogs last in the Atlantic Sun, Phillips’ squad once again turned heads after being picked near the bottom of the league during the preseason polls. In addition to tying the school record for wins (14) for the second straight season, the program established a new benchmark for consecutive wins with six. The Lady Bulldogs etched their name in all 17 statistical categories in the school record books, including establishing or tying five new marks. Regina Feagin earned the program’s first-ever Player of the Week honors while later setting the single-season and career assist records. At least one member of the 2007 squad set all but one career statistical record over the season. With solid play from everyone the entire season, GWU defeated UNF and Davidson for the first time in school history while also sweeping fellow A-Sun Conference foe Lipscomb. During the 2006 season, Phillips’ team tied the school record for wins (14). Feagin earned Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team honors after shattering the school record for assists in a year with 1,280. Phillips has led the program to a nine-win improvement since the 2004 season. In all, Phillips has accumulated an impressive record of 393 wins and 346 losses in her 22 years of head coaching experience, including a 247-260 mark in Division I play. Her honors include being the first volleyball coach in Liberty’s history to win three conference championships and one of two coaches in Big South history to coach in three separate NCAA tournaments. During her stay at Liberty, Phillips led the Flames to Big South Conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 1997, 1999 and 2001 and was named Big South Conference Coach of the Year after the 1997 and 2003 seasons. Three student-athletes were named Big South Conference Player of the Year, 10 players were named all-Big South and five were named the Big South Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player during Phillips’ tenure in Lynchburg, Va. Phillips is every bit as committed to excellence in the classroom as well as on the court, and her student-athlete’s track records proves it. In 2001, Phillips’ Liberty squad finished second in the nation with a team grade-point average of 3.69, and over her 11 seasons at the helm of the Flames program, her teams maintained a GPA of 3.2 or higher in every season. She has continued since her arrival in Boiling Springs. Phillips also has a lengthy track record of directing and coaching highly successful volleyball clinics at colleges and high schools all across the country. At one point during her stay at Liberty, Phillips led a volleyball camp of over 400 participants. Prior to her time at Liberty, Phillips was the head volleyball and softball coach at Lincoln (Ill.) College from 1987-1992. While at Lincoln, Phillips helped the volleyball program climb into the National Junior College Athletic Association national rankings from 1988-1990 and posted a 146-86 record. Her time at Lincoln was highlighted by a 38-12 season in 1988, which saw the team finish ranked 15th in the NJCAA poll. Phillips earned her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Greenville College in Greenville, Ill., and graduated with an Associate’s degree from Lincoln College. Phillips has been very active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes throughout the course of her career, and she strives to use those Christian principles in her coaching and teaching styles. In 2008, Phillips was inducted into the Greenville College Athletics Hall of Fame. Phillips and her husband Ed live with their two sons, Fletcher Reese (10) and Dax Christian (8).

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY 2010 GARDNER-WEBB COACHING STAFF ASSISTANT COACH PHUONG LUONG FIFTH YEAR Assistant Coach Phuong Luong begins his fifth season with the Gardner-Webb volleyball program. He is primarily responsible for handling the setter training, offensive systems, both individual and team defenses, as well as serving as the recruiting coordinator. Luong spent the previous 14 years as an assistant volleyball coach at University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University, University of Wyoming and East Tennessee State University before coming to Boiling Springs in 2006. GWU’s 2009 season saw the Lady Bulldogs pick up 12 wins, the most victories since 2007, and saw another team etch its name in the GWU Division I record books, finishing second in service aces with 227 on the season, only one shy of the single season record. Luong had a freshman for the second straight season earn a spot on the Big South All-Freshman Team in Molly Rhyne, while fellow freshman Carol Solano earned a Big South Defensive Player of the Week honor. Solano also finished the season with 74 total blocks and 54 block assists, which both rank fifth in GWU’s Division I single season record books, while her 20 solo blocks is tied for the fourth most in a single season. In 2008, the team accounted for the fourth-most assists in school history 1,128 despite the change in the scoring system per set from 30 to 25 points. Also in 2008, Luong’s first freshmen class since coming to Gardner-Webb set new heights, as it had a freshman named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year and also be named to the All-Conference Second Team. Luong has helped guide the Lady Bulldogs to two of the best statistical seasons since the GWU’s move to Division I. The 2007 squad set school records for kills (1,634), kills per set (14.09), assists (1,519) and assists per set (13.09). The team had the second-most digs in school history with 2,115 and the second-most block assists with 229 in the program’s young Division I history. The squad was among the top-five all time in each of the 17 statistical categories that GWU maintains. The 2006 team recorded more kills per set, assists per set, service aces per set, digs per set and total blocks per set than the 2005 season. The team set single-season school records for kills per game, service aces per game and assists per game. The squad had the second-highest total blocks per game in school history as well as the highest hitting percentage. The 15.79 digs per game were the third highest for GWU in a single season. While attending Ferris State University, Luong played four years with the school’s highly competitive club squad as well as two seasons with the Grand Rapids (Michigan) AAU Junior Olympic 18’s Elite Team. From there, he spent two more years playing in the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association. In the spring of 1995, Luong graduated from Ferris State with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management and a minor in finance. Along with his duties at Big Rapids, Luong also served as a graduate assistant coach for the Ferris State women’s volleyball program. His duties included analyzing video for scouting purposes, coordinating team offensive plays during matches and assisting the coaching staff with practice and team workouts. In just one season at the head of the West Michigan’s Jr. 18’s AAU volleyball program, Luong led the squad to a first-place finish at the Michigan State AAU Junior National Championship, and all six of his senior competitors went on to play volleyball at the collegiate level. After his time coaching at various levels in Michigan, Luong’s coaching career soared to the next level, as he became the first assistant of the University of New Hampshire women’s team from 1996-1998 where he helped the Wildcats reach the conference tournament finals in his second year as coach. There he helped coach 3 All-Conference First Team and Player of the Year honors. The next step in his coaching career would keep Luong on the East coast taking over first assistant responsibilities at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, where the team posted backto-back 20-win seasons. There he also helped coach 5 All-Conference First and Second Team, Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. This led him to the head coaching position at Wentworth Institute of Technology men’s volleyball program. At Wentworth, Luong led his squad to conference championships from 1998-2000 and finished 13th in the final AVCA Div. III national rankings during the 1999 campaign. He coached 2 All-Conference First team along with having AVCA National Player of the Week honor in February 2000. Luong also spent two years as the coordinator with the New Hampshire Seacoast Junior Olympic Volleyball Program. He served on the board of directors committee and coached the 16’s and 18’s Elite Teams. Under his direction, the East Coast 18’s Elite team captured the silver division team championship at games held on the campus of Penn State University. During his time in various coaching capacities, Luong has held duties ranging from recruiting coordinator, planning practice, game preparation, scouting, game management, compliance, coordinating summer camps and tracking student-athlete academic progress.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY 2009 SEASON IN REVIEW Despite having only three upperclassman on the roster in 2009, the Lady Bulldogs continued to improve throughout the season, recording 12 wins which more than doubled its win total from 2008. The Gardner-Webb women’s volleyball team posted four wins in conference play, one more than in its inaugural year last season, yet accomplished a number of firsts throughout the season which included its first ever season sweep of a Big South Conference foe in its two wins over Radford and its first ever over Coastal Carolina. At home in Paul Porter Arena the Lady Bulldogs were a force to be reckoned with, as GWU picked up eight wins in front of its home crowd, the most in one season since winning eight at home in 2007 and nine at home in 2006. The Lady Bulldogs opened up the season at Illinois State in the Redbird Classic in Normal, Illinois, the home state for senior Regina Feagin, sophomores Laura Wilcox and Lauren Evans and for head coach Chris Phillips. The homecoming was not what the Lady Bulldogs would have liked, as Coach Phillips young squad dropped all three matches, one to host Illinois State, one to Oral Roberts and one to UT-Arlington, to fall to 0-3 to start the season. Gardner-Webb looked to turn things around as the Lady Bulldogs returned home to host the Runnin’ Bulldog Classic. After dropping back-to-back matches on Friday night, including a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the Wofford Terriers, Gardner-Webb responded by defeating the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Lady Hawks, the eventual champions, 3-2 on Saturday morning for GWU’s first win on the year. However, the win took its toll on the Lady Bulldogs, as Gardner-Webb then fell to Wofford 3-0 later on in the afternoon to fall to 1-6 overall. Hopes were high as despite its 1-6 record the Lady Bulldogs were beginning to play some of its best volleyball, as the young team went on to pick up two straight wins at the Catamount Clash, defeating both Western Carolina and Howard 3-1. With two straight wins under its belt, the Lady Bulldogs ran into a tough challenge, as Gardner-Webb faced off with Cleveland State on day two of the Catamount Clash. Cleveland State, who entered the match at 8-2, was too much for the Lady Bulldogs and handed Gardner-Webb a 3-0 loss to wrap up the two-day event. GWU returned home to blank North Carolina A&T 3-0, before going 1-2 at the Winthrop Volleyball Classic with the lone win being a 3-2 five set thriller over Davidson in dramatic fashion. Sitting at 5-9 on the season, the Lady Bulldogs kicked off Big South Conference play with a 3-1 loss at UNC Asheville on September 22nd, before picking up back-to-back wins at home versus Bethune-Cookman and on the road at Radford. After dropping a home contest to Presbyterian College 3-1, the Lady Bulldogs again won two straight games, beating Davidson at home 3-0 and then defeating the Lady Buccaneers of Charleston Southern 3-1 at home to move to 9-11 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Gardner-Webb then went toe-to-toe with the preseason favorite Lady Flames of Liberty on October 9th, winning the first two sets before ultimately falling to Liberty 3-2 at home. The loss took the air out of the Lady Bulldogs, as GWU then dropped its next three contests, all of which were conference matches. Back-to-back home wins over USC Upstate and Radford stopped the losing streak at four for the Lady Bulldogs. The win over the Lady Spartans of USC Upstate was the Lady Bulldogs 10th win on the season, doubling its win total from 2008, while the conference win over Radford gave GWU three conference wins, tying its total from 2008, and gave the Lady Bulldogs its first ever conference series sweep. Yet the season was not over for the young Lady Bulldogs, as Gardner-Webb hit a wall, dropping its next six contests, all of which were conference bouts, to fall to 11-21 overall and 3-12 in the Big South. With one more match to play in the regular season, the Lady Bulldogs played its best all around match of the year, as Gardner-Webb dominated from start to finish to defeat the Lady Chanticleers 3-1, sending the three seniors out with a win in their final home contest. With the win over Coastal Carolina, the Lady Bulldogs posted four conference wins on the season, surpassing its win total of three in its inaugural year in the Big South in 2008. Gardner-Webb’s 4-12 conference record put them as the No. 7 seed heading into the 2009 Big South Volleyball Championship tournament, putting them up against the No. 2 seeded Liberty Lady Flames for the second straight year. Liberty proved to be too much for the Lady Bulldogs, as Gardner-Webb’s season ended with a 3-0 loss to the Lady Flames in the first round of the conference championship tournament. For the second straight season, middle blocker Laura Wilcox was named to the Second-Team All-Conference, as the sophomore led the team with 446 points and 368 kills on the season. Wilcox was second on the team with 60 total blocks and was third on the team with 40 service aces. Freshman outside hitter Molly Rhyne was named to the All-Freshman Team, as she came on strong toward the end of the season. Rhyne, who was named the Big South Freshman of the Week on October 26th, tied for the team lead with 368 kills and was second on the team with 410 points. The Big South Conference also honored GWU’s Evan Moffitt, as she was named to the All-Academic Team. Moffitt, who was second on the team with 312 digs, fourth in blocks with 42 and fourth in services aces with 39, was rewarded for her work in the classroom, as she has posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.7812 while working toward her degree in Chemistry and a minor in mathematics. While the loss of seniors Regina Feagin, the all-time career assist leader in GWU’s Division I history, Brett Wilson and Jessica Clayton will effect the team in 2010, as all three played well in their final seasons at GWU, the future still looks bright for Coach Phillips and her squad. GWU will return seven of its 11 players next season, including its top-five scorers. With a solid core of the roster returning next season and the addition of the five highly touted incoming freshmen, the Lady Bulldogs have high hopes and expectations for the program not only now, but in the years to come.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quartercentury of existence.
