Mike Simpson Head Coach • 13th Season Four-time NEC Coach Of The Year 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-07 Mike Simpson came to Gardner-Webb University in 1999 intent on building a competitive swim team from scratch. He has done just that with a women’s program that has enjoyed tremendous success both in and out of the pool and is looking to do the same with a men’s program that was started in 2007-08. Since the women’s program’s inception, Simpson’s teams won four consecutive Northeast Conference Championships from 2003-2007. The four-time NEC Coach of the Year recipient has produced over 100 all-conference selections, been rated as high as 14th and 30th in the nation, won an NCAA individual national championship and has had the highest ranked team GPA in the nation on multiple occasions. In 2011-12, Gardner-Webb swimming continued its tradition of excellence, both athletically and academically. It was a watermark year for the men’s program in particular and was full of stellar accomplishments, including a 2nd place fiinish at CCSA Championships as well as the program’s first ever win over conference rival Davidson. The men’s team finished with a 7-2 record in dual meets on the year. Not to be outdone, the Gardner-Webb women, who finished third at CCSA’s in 2011, posted a 8-3 campaign. In addition to its success in the pool, both programs demonstrated impressive dedication in the classroom. The women’s team posted the nation’s top GPA during the Fall semester - its third consecutive holding the top spot - with the men’s team rankning seventh in all of Division 1 for the Fall of 2010. The 2009-10 campaign was another successful season for both programs, as the men’s team finished in second-place and the women’s team finished third at the CCSA Championships. Overall, the men’s squad finished with a record of 6-2, while the women finished with a 8-3 overall record. The men’s team had 11 studentathletes to recieve all-conference honors and the women’s team had 10 studentathletes to recieve recognition, giving them a total of 21 on the season. Once again, the effort that the Runnin’ Bulldogs exhibit in the classroom was nationally recognized, as the women’s team finished the 2009 fall semester with a grade point average of 3.52, which was the best among all NCAA Division I women’s swimming programs according to the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), marking the third time that the team topped this list. The men’s program had cumulative GPA of 3.26, ranking sixth in the nation. In 2008-09 again both squads had a strong season as the men’s team finished in third-place and the women’s team finished fourth at the CCSA Championships. The men finished the season with a 4-4 dual meet record, while the women finished with an 8-2 head-to-head record. Each team had seven student-athletes receive all-conference recognition, giving them 14 total on the season. Again the Runnin’ Bulldogs hard work in the classroom was rewarded, as the women’s team completed the 2008 fall semester with a grade point average of 3.62 which was the top in the nation among all NCAA Division I women’s swimming programs according to the CSCAA. The men’s team was also top dog, as the men ranked first in the nation as well with a 3.33 GPA, just .01 of a point ahead of Georgetown University. In the spring semester, the GWU women’s swim program ranked third on the list nationally behind Rice and Cincinnati with a 3.55 cumulative GPA. The men finished 16th overall, tallying a 3.23 cumulative GPA. “Once again our swimmers have done a tremendous job in the classroom,” said Head Swim Coach Mike Simpson. “This is a tribute to their discipline, hard work, and dedication to being true student-athletes. We are very proud of our team for their great year both in academics and in the pool.” However, 2008-09 was also a year of firsts for the Bulldogs, as GWU swimmers Mallory Weggemann and Tucker Dupree combined for 13 gold medals and 13 national titles in the 2009 Spring Can-Am Swimming Championships in Gresham, Oregon on March 19-21. The event marked the first major swimming competition

since the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, hosting some of the world’s top swimmers from the United States, Canada, and Columbia. The 2007-2008 campaign could best be defined as a new atmosphere for Simpson. He guided the first-year men’s swimming program to a third-place finish in the newly formed CCSA. The women’s program also took third in the first-year league after departing from the NEC. Simpson led the women’s team to two conference titles while the men’s program boasted its first-ever individual title winner. With some of the most talented student-athletes in his tenure during the 20062007 season, Simpson guided his squad to its fourth consecutive NEC conference title while garnering his fourth straight NEC Coach of the Year award. Terra Wilson, who was named Most Outstanding Swimmer of the NEC meet, led a group of 10 that received all-conference honors. There, the Bulldogs set five NEC and school over the three-day meet. Wilson, who qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events, took home All-America honors in the 200 free after touching the wall in 1:45.40, finishing sixth. In the 100 free, her time of 49.03 earned honorable mention All-America honors by placing 12th. She ended her career by being named to the Mid-Major All-America Team for the second consecutive season. Outside the pool Simpson’s team’s credentials are just as impressive. In 2007, 11 student-athletes earned a spot on the NEC academic honor roll. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America tabbed the squad as an Academic All-American Team for the 2006 fall semester as the Bulldogs’ GPA of 3.419 placed them 10th nationally among all Division I women’s swimming programs. The honor marked the ninth consecutive semester in which the team had been ranked in the top-10 nationally. In 2005-2006, the Sarasota, Fla., native guided GWU to a superb 12-3 record en route to capturing their third straight NEC conference championship. The Bulldogs came back from a day-one deficit to take the championships by more than 100 points. GWU had nine student-athletes named to the all-conference team while once again for the third straight year Simpson was named the NEC’s Coach of the Year. For the second straight season, the Bulldogs won eight overall conference titles, as Wilson won the 100 free and 200 free, Taylor Simpson took first in the 200 IM and 200 breast, Whitney Hooley nabbed first in 100 back and Heather Roka won the 1650 free. Gardner-Webb also won two relay titles, with its 400 and 800 free relay units touching the wall first. Wilson became the first-ever swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championships in GWU’s Division I history. She earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 free and had a time good enough to make her an Olympic trial qualifier in the 100 free at the summer USS Nationals. Once again, the Lady Bulldogs excelled outside the pool in 2005-06, as GWU placed 14 student-athletes on the NEC Academic Honor Roll. For the second consecutive year Simpson was named the NEC Scholar Athlete for the sport of women’s swimming, and was honored by the ESPN The Magazine as a member of the Academic All-America Women’s At-Large first team and the All-District Women’s At-Large Team. The College Swim Coaches of America Association honored the Lady Bulldogs’ team by naming them as an Academic All-America Team. The Runnin’ Bulldogs finished fourth in the nation among all Division I Women’s Swimming programs.

GWU had perhaps its best season ever in 2004-05 as they turned in a 15-2 record and won its second conference championship in as many years. In only its second season as an associate member of the Northeast Conference, GardnerWebb led the NEC Championships from day one, and saw nine student-athletes named all-conference in 2003-04. Simpson was named the NEC’s Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. GWU won eight conference titles along the way, with Wilson winning the 100 free and 200 free, Simpson winning the 200 IM and 400 IM, and Roka winning the 500 free. Gardner-Webb also won a trio of relay titles, with its 200, 400, and 800 free relay squads taking conference crowns. As has become customary, Simpson’s team was also dominant in the classroom, as nine student-athletes earned spots on the NEC Academic Honor Roll. Simpson, with senior standing in the classroom, was named the NEC Scholar Athlete for the sport of women’s swimming, and the team as a whole was first in the nation in GPA among all Academic All-America teams named by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The 2003-04 squad posted a 10-4 record on the season and won the NEC Conference Championship in its first season in the league, while the 2002-03 squad posted 12 wins to match which at the time was the school record for single-season victories, and turned in a second-place finish at the Southern States Conference Championships in its final season of competition in the league. Gardner-Webb had five student-athletes earn all-conference accolades and set a school record for academic all-conference performers with an astonishing 17. Cheryl Horne and Simpson each won individual conference titles, with Horne taking both the 50 free and 100 free and Simpson claiming the 400 IM. In 2001-02, Simpson guided Gardner-Webb to a 12-5 record and a thirdplace finish at the Southern States Conference meet. Horne again took home all-conference honors, and was joined by first-time honorees Hamilton and Chester. The Lady Bulldogs improved dramatically on the previous year’s showing at the ECAC meet, coming in 11th and placing eight members on the All-ECAC squad. Five relay squads earned the distinction, while Chester, Hamilton, Horne and Smith all took individual honors. The 2001-02 squad also excelled in the classroom, earning CSCAA Academic All-American team honors.

Gardner-Webb made the jump to Division I athletics in 2000-01, but Simpson’s squad was up to the challenge. The Lady Bulldogs came in fourth at the Southern States Conference meet in 2000-01, again getting an all-conference year from Horne. In its first year of competition at the Eastern College Athletic Conference meet, GWU placed 19th and had seven swimmers named All-ECAC. Katie Alford, Megan Campbell, Sarah Fair and Horne all garnered the honor for the 800 freestyle relay, while Hamilton, Smith and Becky Henninger were tabbed for individual events. In the team’s first year of existence, 1999-2000, the rookie coach took a squad of only four girls and turned in a 9-1 record for a stellar inaugural year. GardnerWebb came in eighth at the Southern States Conference meet and had freshmen Melissa Smith and Horne named to the all-conference squad. At the NCAA Division II Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., the Lady Bulldogs placed 14th out of 29 teams, highlighted by Smith claiming the national championship in the 1650 free. The freshman’s winning time of 17:05.75 brought the program its first NCAA title just months after its inception. Simpson earned his stripes at the club and high school levels before moving to GWU for his first collegiate head-coaching job. Prior to his arrival, he coached the swim team at Venice High School. There, he guided Venice to its first-ever district title and produced a high school All-American and several all-state honorees. Before his stint at Venice High School, Simpson was making a name for himself on the club circuit, coaching nationally ranked teams in Ohio, Illinois and Florida. His Sarasota team took four state championships and placed second at the YMCA National Championships. Simpson’s 1985 Jolliet, Ill., squad also took second at the YMCA National Championships, taking home 13 individual national titles. That team turned out five senior national finalists and three Olympic trial qualifiers, in addition to setting seven national records. A 1980 graduate of Florida State University, Simpson transferred there from the University of Houston prior to his senior year. A swimmer at Houston, Simpson qualified for the NCAA Division I nationals his sophomore year. Simpson resides in Boiling Springs with his wife, Kathi. The Simpsons have four children – Taylor (27), Saxon (22), Logan (21), and Garrett (15), and one grandson, Mason Liam Jackson, born May 2010.

Assistant Coach Fifth Season

Assistant Coach First Season

Assistant coach Ashley Grogan enters her fifth season as a member of the Gardner-Webb swimming coaching staff. In 2010-11, Grogan helped to guide the men’s team to a second consecutive runner-up finish in the CCSA and the women’s team to another top three finish (3rd). The former Clemson standout displayed expertise in coaching the stroke and mid-distance groups in helping the men’s and women’s teams record a combined 15-5 dual meet record on the year. Thanks to Coach Grogan’s keen eye for talent as well as her passion for Gardner-Webb swimming, the men’s and women’s teams combined to put 19 student-atheltes on the CCSA All-Conference list, including one individual CCSA title (men’s 200 fly, Steven Caudill). During the 2009-10 season, Grogan once again worked with the mid-distance and stroke groups on both the men’s and women’s sides, helping both teams set new personal, GWU, and CCSA records. The men’s team finished second overall at CCSA Championships with an overall record of 6-2, while the women’s squad finished third overall at CCSA Championships with an overall record of 8-3 under Grogan’s direction. She also helped lead the men’s team to 11 All-Conference winners and 10 All-Conference winners for the women’s team. In 2008-09, Grogan helped with the day-to-operations such as the multi-practice times and sessions as well as conditioning. Grogan mainly worked with the middistance and stroke groups on both the men’s and women’s sides, again helping both teams to set new GWU and personal best records throughout the season. During her first season with the Runnin’ Bulldogs, Grogan mainly worked with the various sprint groups. On the women’s side, multiple student-athletes etched top-10 times thanks to her tutelage, helping re-write the Gardner-Webb record book. The men’s team, in its first season, posted some of the better times in the CCSA under her watch. Grogan also spearheaded the recruitment of the 2008-09 incoming class. Grogan starred at Clemson University during her collegiate career. She was a four-year letterwinner with the Tigers while earning a spot in the finals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship each season. Grogan had etched her name in Clemson’s record book, recording the fourth-best time in school history in the 100 yard and the ninth fastest mark in the 200 yard breaststroke events. In 2003, she was a Senior National Qualifier. After the completion of the 200405 season, Grogan earned the Coaches Award. Prior to her arrival at Clemson, she was a Florida high school state champion in 2001. Grogan and her husband Kelly were married in March 2007. The couple, which resides in Clemson, S.C., had their first child, Riley Victoria, in January of 2010.

The 2011-12 season marks the first for new assistant coach Mike Blum with Gardner-Webb swimming. Fresh off a three-year stint as an assistant coach at up-and-coming Florida Southern College (Lakeland, Fla.), Blum has recently experienced excellence in collegiate swimming at a program which has risen to the top of the NCAA Division II ranks. While at Florida Southern, where Blum also served as the Interim Head Coach for a semester, Blum coached the mid-distance and distance groups, which broke and reset every Florida Southern school record during his time with the Mocs. He helped to produce the school’s first-ever national qualifiers, turning out eight NCAA Division II All-Americans and one national champion. This past year, Blum served as the Head Age Group Coach and Assistant Senior Coach for the Sarasota YMCA Sharks in Venice, Florida. During his time with the Sarasota YMCA Sharks, Blum’s team won the 2011 Florida Swimming Junior Olympic Team Championship and the 2011 Short Course YMCA National Championship. He coached several YMCA National Champions and had a number of swimmers qualify for the nationals at both the junior and senior levels. Blum, who is originally from New Port Richey, Florida, graduated from Florida Southern College in 2008 with a B.A. degree in Physical Education.

Terra Wilson enters her second season as a member of the Gardner-Webb coaching staff as a graduate assistant. In addition to being on deck at every practice, she will be in charge of all of the dry land workouts. Wilson will also in charge of all of the food arrangements for all of the road trips. Wilson, who swam for Gardner-Webb from 2003-04 to 2006-07, was one of the most successful swimmers in the history of the program. In 2005-06, she became the first Gardner-Webb swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships, and in 2006-07, she was named the NEC’s Most Outstanding Swimmer, as well as earning All-American honors at the NCAA Championships, and being named to the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-America Team. Prior to her time competing for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, she was an All-American high school swimmer in California. Wilson earned her degree from Gardner-Webb in 2007 with a major in psychology.

Mƒjors Offered Perhaps there is no greater time to observe the academic quality of Gardner-Webb University than right now. All of the necessary factors for academic excellence – faculty, students, resources, curriculum – are working in conjunction with one another to gain widespread acclaim from alumni, friends, trustees, the media and the community. Over 130 full-time faculty members comprise a group of educators at GWU being heralded as the "premiere class of instructors ever assembled at the University." Over 80 percent of the faculty hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, and many boast of well-documented activities in the business and professional worlds. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1, Gardner-Webb is able to provide personal instruction to its students, who now number over 3,900, making Gardner-Webb the fifth-largest private institution in North Carolina. New technological features in our library enhance the learning experience for a higher quality student. The incoming freshman class this year averaged over 1020 on the SAT and a 3.5 GPA.

Administration Dr. A Frank Bonner Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his seventh year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005. After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005.

Gardner-Webb University President Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a outstanding faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.

Administration Chuck Burch

Pam Scruggs

Vice President for Athletics

Associate Athletics Director/SWA

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 15th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 30th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Runnin’ Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 53, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University, Danielle, a senior student at Brevard (N.C.) College, and Amy (17).

Senior Woman Administrator Pam Scruggs is in her 32nd year of service with Gardner-Webb University athletics, and remains one of the most vital components of the program’s success. Scruggs has served as the Associate Athletics Director and SWA since 2000. Scruggs provides the athletics department with consistent and dependable performance in a number of crucial administrative areas. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring the athletics department budgets, monitoring the operation of the department’s women’s varsity programs, overseeing game-day operations and assisting in the administration of the University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs plays an invaluable role in the success of Runnin’ Bulldog athletics. Scruggs was recently inducted into the Gardner-Webb athletics Hall of Fame for her meritorious service to the program. Pam and her husband, John, have one daughter, Bonnie, a student currently enrolled at Gardner-Webb.
