The Bulldog Way What is the Bulldog Way? This is Gardner-Webb Wrestling’s plan on building our brand through four main character traits, Integrity, Faith, Discipline, and Intensity. By committing to these traits in all areas, we will be creating an environment where team members will be able to grow in all avenues of life. Our first step in implementing the plan will be to define each of our pillars. Integrity Integrity can be defined as simply stating, “who we are when nobody is looking.” Integrity can be much more complicated, as you look further into what integrity is. The word integrity comes from the Latin word “Integer” meaning whole or complete. This can be compared to an internal support system, and the stronger your support system, the harder it will be to bring you down. To be a person who is considered to have a high level of integrity, it is important that one has congruence between what you say and what you do. Character can fall under the umbrella of integrity and will be judged in how you carry yourself in all you do (practice, class, public, on the bus, etc). Discovering and defining one’s core values is vital in defining integrity as your self-identity molds who that you are. Faith Faith shows a commitment to something without any guarantee of an outcome. Actively knowing that the object of your faith exists, remaining obedient to the principles of that central focus and being continuously desirous of maintaining that presence in your life no matter what state your current life is. Having a strong faith can cover areas of one’s life. Having a spiritual faith in Jesus Christ as our savior. Having faith in your teammates. Having faith in your coaches/bosses/leaders. Having faith in a system. Having faith in yourself. Life is full of question marks and there is no way to predict what our results are going to be. By committing to the processes and believing in what you are doing, you will get the most out of your journey. Discipline Discipline goes hand in hand with Faith, as it can be defined as a set of practices or guidelines that will direct you toward your goal. Discipline is a concerted, focused effort often involving sacrifice, dedication of resources and risk, which is directed toward accomplishment of your goal. One must train his mental, moral, and physical abilities as he develops his self-discipline. Discipline is a trait that forces one to make a decision to take action to follow through with a plan. Not taking action is a decision just as taking action is. Self-discipline is what drives us to continually stay on our faith’s path. Intensity Intensity is a mental focus that we must bring to the table in all that we do. By channeling a high degree of emotional excitement toward the task at hand, one can direct all focus toward the goal.

2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW The 2013-14 season will see the Gardner-Webb wrestling team and second year head coach Daniel Elliott returning 16 grapplers that were on the roster last season, led by wrestlers Hunter Gamble, Gray Jones, Robbie Golde, Tyler Ziegler, Cortez Starkes, Davante Andujar, Justin Kozera and Aaron Rabin who all have seen time in the GWU lineup on a consistent basis in the last two years. Although Coach Elliott and his staff have a lot of returners, the Runnin’ Bulldog roster is covered with youth from top to bottom with only four upperclassmen and 27 underclassmen which includes 15 newcomers. Gardner-Webb will count on the lone senior on the squad in Golde, as well as a number of other young returners in Andujar, Kozera, Gamble, Jones, Starkes, Ziegler, Austin Trott, Kyle Ash, Boyce Cornwell and Ryan Mosley to help lead not only the newcomers on the mat, but also the team as a whole as GWU goes through the challenging 2013-14 slate. Starkes returns at 125 pounds after breaking into the lineup for GWU midway through last season and will look to improve on his 14 wins from a year ago. Redshirtfreshman Alex White, as well as a trio of newcomers in Philip Anderson, Victor Blasucci and James Daniel, will all also push for a starting spot at 125 on the mat from the very beginning of the season. Both Golde and Ziegler headline the group at 133 pounds, as Golde returns for his final season on the mat after recording 17 wins last season and Ziegler moves up from 125 pounds to 133 pounds in his second year at GWU. Like at 125 pounds, a trio of newcomers in George Weber III, Ryan Hull and Tyler Gonzalez will look to provide depth at the position. At 141 pounds Andujar, a two-year starter, returns to the mat for GWU, as does Mosley, who went 21-10 last year at a number of open invitational tournaments during his redshirt

season. Freshmen Chris Vassar and Brian Inouye will also see time at 141 pounds, particularly in the open invitational tournaments, as both look to gain experience in their first year at GWU. With the loss of Ryan Medved due to graduation, the 149 pound class is wide open up with both Andujar and Mosley likely to see time there as well. Freshman Cole Graves and fellow newcomer Jeyson Guardado will also look to make a run at some mat time at the 149 pound weight class throughout the year. Like at 149 pounds, GWU four-year starter Alex Medved graduated to leave the 157 pound weight class open, which Coach Elliott and his squad feel will be filled by Ash. Last season the redshirt-freshman record 21 wins overall, which included four pin fall victories, three tech fall wins and three more major decision wins. Depth at 157 pounds will come from fellow redshirtfreshman in Trott, as well as newcomer Alex Bennett. At 165 pounds, gone is Justin Guthrie who started each of the last three years for GWU, and in is Trott and Joseph Evans. Trott led GWU with 26 wins last season overall between 157 and 165 pounds, recording 11 pin fall wins and 10 tech fall victories as a redshirt. Evans, also a redshirtfreshman, wrestled in 14 matches last season at a number of open invitational events. A tandem of freshmen in Alex Bennett and Brett Stein will provide depth at the position that contains a lot of youth from top to bottom. Returning at 174 pounds is Gamble, the 2013 Southern Conference Champion and GWU’s lone NCAA Division I National Championship automatic qualifier from last season. Gamble will look to continue his success into his sophomore season in 2013-14, after posting 24 wins last season in his first year on the mat at GWU. Fellow returners Rabin, Evans and Matt Kowalski, as well as freshmen Andy Bennett and Stein will all provide

depth at the 174 pound weight class, which is perhaps GWU’s deepest position overall. Jones, a 2013 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team member, returns at 184 pounds, as the second-year GWU grappler totaled 18 wins last season overall. Behind Jones at 184 pounds will be Rabin, fellow returner Zach Bennett and two freshmen in Andy Bennett and Terry Henderson. The 197 pound weight class will see a new face in 201314, as both Travis Porter and Blake Salyer wrapped up their GWU careers last season. Cornwell, a redshirt-freshman from Conyers, Ga., will look to start at 197 pounds, as last season he tallied 14 wins overall. Jones, Rabin, Zach Bennett and newcomer Craig Bailes could all see time at 197 pounds throughout the season as well. At the heavyweight spot, Kozera returns after redshirting last season in which he totaled 19 wins on the season, including eight pin fall victories. Both Cornwell and Bailes will provide depth behind Kozera at the 285 pound class. While youth is spread out throughout the GWU roster, Coach Elliott, his staff and his squad have high expectations in 2013-14, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs return nine grapplers that posted double digit wins a year ago. However, GWU will have to make strides on the road as the Runnin’ Bulldogs will host only three home dual matches throughout the entire 2013-14 season. Gardner-Webb will open up the season at the Virginia Quad Meet on November 2nd against the likes of West Virginia, Virginia and Anderson (S.C.), before heading back up to Virginia the following week to take part in the Hokie Open hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. on November 10th. Six days later GWU will once again head north, this time traveling to Ypsilanti, Michigan to take part in the EMU Duals on November 16th at Eastern Michigan University. At the duals, GWU is slated to take on Kent State, Eastern
Michigan, Michigan State and Utah Valley State. Gardner-Webb will then return to the state of North Carolina for the Wolfpack Duals on November 24th in Raleigh, N.C., in which the Runnin’ Bulldogs will square off with Lindsey Wilson, UNC Pembroke and N.C. State in dual match action, before opening up Southern Conference action on December 4th at VMI in Lexington, Va. Coach Elliott’s squad will then wrap up the 2013 calendar year with a conference dual match at Chattanooga on December 16th and at the Brute Invitational in Lock Haven, Pa. on December 29th. The 2014 calendar year will kick off with a road bout at George Mason on January 5th, before Gardner-Webb will host its first home match of the season on January 13th against Appalachian State in Paul Porter Arena. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will then return to the road for three straight road matches at Davidson, on January 15th, and versus both Columbia and American on January 19th in Washington, D.C., before returning home to host the Campbell Fighting Camels on January 23rd. Gardner-Webb will return a match from last season to the Duke Blue Devils on February 4th, before hosting its third and final home contest versus The Citadel on February 7th. The final three dual matches will be on the road against Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville on February 19th and versus both Cleveland State and Ohio in Athens, Ohio on February 23rd. The 2014 Southern Conference Wrestling Championships will be held on March 8th in Buies Creek, N.C. on the campus of Campbell University, as GWU will look to make it two straight seasons with a conference champion.

Former two-time NCAA Division I National Qualifier and Runnin’ Bulldog wrestler Daniel Elliott begins his second year as the Head Coach of the Gardner-Webb Wrestling program after taking over the reigns in April 2012. Elliott, who took over for former head coach Dick Wince who retired at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season after 22 years at Gardner-Webb University, served as the Associate Head Coach for the previous three seasons and has been on the GWU wrestling coaching staff since 2006. In 2012-13, Elliott’s first year as a head coach, he helped guide freshman Hunter Gamble to become GardnerWebb’s first-ever Southern Conference Champion. With Gamble’s Southern Conference Championship victory at 174 pounds, he received an automatic bid to the NCAA National Championships where he went on to win his first round match to join Eddie McCray and Joshua Pnieswki as the only three Runnin’ Bulldog grapplers to earn a win in the Championship bracket at the NCAA Championships. Since moving over to the bench as a coach in 2006, Elliott has seen at least one GWU wrestler make it to the NCAA Championships in six of the last seven years, including watching a record tying four student-athletes qualify for the nationals in 2010-11. Heavyweight Dustin Porter reached the NCAA Championships four straight years from 2007-10, while fellow GWU grappler Rob Tate reached the Championships in 2006-07, earning the Runnin’ Bulldogs lone victory at the national event that season. Under Elliott’s guidance over the last seven years, a number of different wrestlers have posted 20 wins or more over a single season with a handful of those grapplers accomplishing that feat multiple times. Dustin Porter finished his career with a total of 120 wins overall, a program high, and was a four-time NCAA qualifier and a four-time East Regional Champion, while Travis Porter, the younger brother of Dustin, recorded 76 wins over his career at GWU and was a 2011 East Regional Champion and NCAA qualifier. Twins Alex and Ryan Medved registered 97 and 59 career wins, respectively, during their time at Gardner-Webb and were both 2011 East Regional Champions and NCAA qualifiers as well, while in his final year on the mat at Gardner-Webb in 2011, Jonathan Velazquez was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2011 NCAA East Regional Championships, was a 2011 East Regional Champion at 184 pounds and also qualified for the 2011 NCAA National Championships. Off the mat, Elliott has worked hard in raising money for the GWU Wrestling program and its new practice and locker room facility. His fundraising efforts have allowed the Runnin’ Bulldog wrestling program to move into a new building prior to the start of the 2010-11 season, which when fully renovated will be one of the nicest wrestling only facilities in all of NCAA Division I with offices, locker room, team room, bathrooms and a large practice area. During his career for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, Elliott was a two-time NCAA Qualifier and a two-time Regional Champion at 149 pounds. In his last regional meet in 2006, Elliott was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler, while he finished the regular season with a record of 40-2 during his senior campaign and was ranked 10th overall in the nation at 149 pounds in the final national rankings.

Elliott, who held the school record for career wins with 108 when he finished his career, also holds GWU’s single-season wins record in addition to the most consecutive wins by a Runnin’ Bulldog wrestler in the program’s history. He also led the team in each of his last three seasons in takedowns. In the spring of 2008, Elliott competed in the USA Wrestling Northeast Regional and placed third in his weight class, marking the first time that he had placed at a senior-level event. Elliott graduated in May 2006 with a double major in History and Communications. Elliott then went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Sports Science & Pedagogy from Gardner-Webb in August 2008. Daniel is married to Paisley Elliott and the couple lives in Gaffney, S.C. with their dog, Monster.

Nate Schiedel was named as the Assistant Coach for the Gardner-Webb Wrestling program by head coach Daniel Elliott in the summer of 2013. Schiedel, who will work extensively with the upper weight classes, came to Gardner-Webb after a stellar career on the mat at Binghamton University in Binghamton, New York. A four-time NCAA Division I National Championship Qualifier for the Bearcats, Schiedel finished his career with an overall record of 121-32 and a dual match career record of 6510, including going a perfect 17-0 his senior season. Schiedel recorded a total of 35 pins over his final four years on the mat and posted 27 wins overall in each of his five years as a Bearcat. Competing at both 184 and 197 pounds over his intercollegiate career, Schiedel was a CAA Champion in 200910 and a three-time CAA Championship Runner-Up on the mat. The three-time Team Captain, who was ranked in the top20 nationally for four of his five years at Binghamton, was ranked as high as fifth in the nation his redshirt-senior season in 2012-13. Schiedel was also a University Greco-Roman National Finalist and a FILA Junior Greco-Roman All-American. During his time as a student-athlete, Schiedel also served as a wrestling camp counselor, working extensively with Olympic Wrestling Gold Medalist Tom Brands and six-time World and Olympic Wrestling Champion John Smith. Schiedel has worked at college camps at Binghamton, Oklahoma State and Iowa, where he instructed and was held responsible for the supervision of over 30 student-athletes each session and also assisted student-athletes in becoming successful wrestlers on the mat and valued community members off of it. He graduated from Binghamton with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics in May 2012.

Kyle Blevins joined the Gardner-Webb wrestling coaching staff as a Graduate Assistant Coach in August 2012 and is in his second season overall at GWU. Blevins, who along with head coach Daniel Elliott, works extensively with the lower and middleweights, helped guide freshman Hunter Gamble to become Gardner-Webb’s first-ever Southern Conference Champion in 2012-13. With Gamble’s Southern Conference Championship victory at 174 pounds, he received an automatic bid to the NCAA National Championships where he went on to win his first round match to join Eddie McCray and Joshua Pnieswki as the only three Runnin’ Bulldog grapplers to earn a win in the Championship bracket at the NCAA Championships. Under the tutelage of Coach Blevins, a total of 11 different Runnin’ Bulldog wrestlers, ranging in weights from 125 pounds to 174 pounds, posted double digit wins on the 2012-13 season, while seven of those grapplers tallied 15 or more wins on the year. Blevins, who was a standout wrestler on the mat at Appalachian State, was a two-time NCAA National Qualifier (2011 and 2012) and an NCAA All-American in 2012. He was also tabbed the 2012 Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year and was a Southern Conference Champion in his weight class of 165 pounds. In 2012, he finished fourth-place overall at the 2012 NCAA National Tournament, the highest of any unseeded wrestler in any weight class. Blevins also set program records for wins in a season with 40 victories overall and finished the year ranked No. 15 overall in the nation by both Intermat Wrestling and W.I.N. Magazine. Blevins finished his career with 124 wins, second most in Appalachian State history, with 78 those wins coming over his final two years on the mat for the Mountaineers. Blevins has served as a camp counselor at the Appalachian State University Wrestling Camps, where he has helped to manage day-today camp activities, assisted the coaches during drills and technique sessions, officiated camp competitions and matches, and assisted in housing responsibilities. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations with a minor in Business from Appalachian State University in May 2012. Blevins is currently working toward his Master’s Degree in Sports Science & Pedagogy from Gardner-Webb University.
2012-13 SEASON REVIEW With a first year head coach in Daniel Elliott leading the Gardner-Webb wrestling program, the Runnin’ Bulldog grapplers had a strong year in 2012-13, highlighted by GWU picking up its first-ever Southern Conference Wrestling Champion and seeing a wrestler return to the NCAA Division I National Championships for the first time since 2011. “This season has been an interesting year for my first as a head coach,” stated Coach Elliott. “We returned to the NCAA tournament after failing to qualify anyone in the previous year for the first time in GWU’s Division I history. We put three wrestlers into the Southern Conference finals, which was three more than last year. While our dual record wasn’t the greatest, we know that we have definitely made some major improvements this year. We placed wrestlers in every single tournament we competed in and had numerous guys with more than 20 wins on the year all while starting four true freshmen throughout the year. There has been a culture change within the program and it shows with three freshmen, which redshirted this season, recording over 20 wins on the year, which is a first for our program, and I feel really shows where we are heading. We have signed four top guys early who ended up having great seasons. While we could have had better results this year, there is a positive feeling in the room and everyone is excited about the future of the program.” The Runnin’ Bulldogs had six wrestlers, both attached and unattached, total 20 wins or more on the season, while freshman Gray Jones earned a spot on the SoCon AllFreshman Team. As a team, GWU finished fourth overall at the Southern Conference Championships and had one firstplace finish in Hunter Gamble, two second-place finishes in Alex and Ryan Medved, and a total of five other grapplers compete in the third-place match overall in their respective weight classes.

GWU’s Gamble capped off a solid freshman campaign, as he swept through the 174 pound bracket at the 2013 Southern Conference Wrestling Championships to take first-place overall and not only become the first Southern Conference Champion on the mat for Gardner-Webb, but also earned a spot as an automatic qualifier at the 2013 NCAA National Championships. At the Championships, Gamble became only the third GWU wrestler in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Division I history, joining Eddie McCray (2007) and Josh Pniewski (2006), to record a win in the Championship Bracket with a 5-3 decision over No. 9 Nathaniel Brown of Lehigh in the first round. Gamble, who was one of four true freshmen in the GWU lineup for most of the season, along with Cortez Starkes, Tyler Ziegler and Jones, totaled 24 wins overall on the season, which was second overall on the team. While a slew of newcomers in addition to Gamble and Jones having strong seasons, such as Austin Trott, Ryan Mosley and Kyle Ash, who all wrestled unattached and redshirted in 2012-13, tallying 26, 21 and 21 total wins respectively on the year, a handful of grapplers wrapped up their careers at GWU in 2012-13. Redshirt-seniors Alex Medved, Ryan Medved, Travis Porter, Justin Guthrie and Blake Salyer all finished their careers on the mat at Gardner-Webb in 2012-13, arguably leaving the program in better shape than it was when the pentad arrived back in 2008-09. Alex Medved recorded a team-high 27 wins on the year, which not only was a career-best in a single season for the 157 pounder, but it also gave him 97 career wins overall during his time at GWU, while his twin brother Ryan, bounced back from a season-ending knee injury in 2011-12 to tally 13 wins on the year and take second-place overall at 149 pounds at the conference championship meet.

Porter finished his career out at GWU with 20 wins overall on the year, giving him 76 career victories as a Runnin’ Bulldog, while both Guthrie, who was a preseason All-Conference selection at 165 pounds, and Salyer capped off their respective careers with double digit wins for the year. “This senior group will always hold a special part in my heart as they were the first guys I had any part of recruiting at Gardner-Webb,” Elliott continued. “They were part of a six-man recruiting class and having five guys finish the grind of a collegiate wrestling career shows a testament to their desire for success. Seeing these guys improve and grow over the past five years has been a great experience for me, and it hurt to see them fall short at the wrestling goals they had set out for themselves. These guys have laid the foundation for future Runnin’ Bulldog wrestlers and have set a great example for our young class now. Gardner-Webb’s future success on the wrestling mat will be because of the foundation and commitment that these guys instilled in the program. I am proud of their accomplishments and it was a great honor to coach these men.” After starting the season off at The Citadel Open and the Hokie Open in early November, the Runnin’ Bulldogs hosted its first annual Movember Duals on November 10th, where Gardner-Webb suffered a loss to No. 16 Virginia and defeated George Mason to go to 1-1 overall in dual match action. With a handful of wrestlers placing at both the Wolfpack Open and the King College Open over the next two weeks, Coach Elliott’s squad returned to dual match action in a huge way, defeating Belmont Abbey 35-8 at home on November 19th. The Runnin’ Bulldogs then suffered three straight dual match losses at the Hoosier Duals, which included a 24-21 Southern Conference loss to Southern Illinois –
Edwardsville, and a fourth loss at Appalachian State in the month of December to fall to 2-5 overall in dual match action and 0-2 in Southern Conference competition. Following participation at the Cleveland State Open and the Brute Invitational to close out the month of December, Gardner-Webb jump-started the 2013 calendar year with home bouts versus N.C. State, Davidson and VMI, going 2-1 overall during that span to improve to 4-6 in dual match action and 2-2 in the SoCon. Following back-to-back losses at Campbell and versus Chattanooga in dual match action, the Runnin’ Bulldogs stepped back into tournament competition at the Newberry Open on February 2nd, before dropping its last five dual bouts to Duke, The Citadel, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Cleveland State to finish the year at 4-13 overall and 2-5 in the Southern Conference. “It is hard to say that this year’s dual season was a great success by focusing on the results. Our record was not any better than it has been in years past, but if we look deeper, it is obvious that the team is growing and improving,” Elliott commented. “We suffered several close losses this year that could have easily had a different outcome. We split 5-5 in several duals, but unfortunately gave up some bonus points that we were not able to overcome. The improvement was there, just not in our results. We will continue to examine and evaluate our performances to be sure we keep improving each and every time we take the mat.” The future looks bright for Coach Elliott and the GardnerWebb wrestling program, as in addition to a highly touted group of early signees in Philip Anderson, Christopher Vassar, George Weber and Brett Stein, GWU will return a number of starters in Starkes, redshirt-sophomore Robbie Golde, sophomore Davante Andujar, and both Gamble and Jones. On top of that, the Runnin’ Bulldogs also return grapplers Trott, Ash, Ziegler, Mosley, Alex White, Joseph Evans, Matt Kowalski, Aaron Rabin, Zach Bennett, Boyce Cornwell and Justin Kozera, who all gained valuable experience on the mat in 2012-13 and will provide Coach Elliott and his staff an immense number of options as the program moves forward.

GARDNER-WEBB ATHLETIC TRAINING An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Dr. Heather Hartsell and the rest of the Athletic Training staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 22 varsity sports. Kevin Jones, the Director of Athletic Training, and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of thirteen certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The Gardner-Webb Athletic Training program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the School of Preventative and Rehabilitative Health Sciences. Upon graduation, athletic training students must challenge and pass the Board of Certification Exam to become Certified Athletic Trainers (AT). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY History
Gardner-Webb’s journey from a boarding high school to a thriving regional University is marked by remarkable growth, great determination, and unyielding perseverance. In 1903, the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations conceived a vision of an institution of learning where young students would enjoy “the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” On December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School, Gardner-Webb’s predecessor, was chartered. Even today, the University’s relationship with area churches is still strong. The institution was transformed into a junior college in 1928, and only survived the catastrophic Great Depression through God’s providential grace and the tireless efforts of numerous trustees and local champions of Christian education. Then in 1942, N.C. Governor and Shelby native O. Max Gardner began devoting time and energy toward strengthening and guiding the College. In recognition of his efforts, those of his wife, Fay Webb Gardner, and their families, the school’s name was changed to Gardner-Webb College. After World War II, the College experienced steady physical growth and academic development. New buildings sprang up, enrollments increased, and by the end of the 1960s, the College was ready to transition to a four-year institution. In 1971, Gardner-Webb earned its full accreditation as a senior college, and nine years later it began offering its first master’s degree in education. In 1978, the College became an early pioneer of modern distance education by launching the groundbreaking Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners (GOAL) Program. The GOAL Program enabled working adults to take evening classes close to home and complete their bachelor’s degrees, a truly

Born in Durham, North Carolina, A. Frank Bonner grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. The son of Francis Wesley Bonner (deceased) and Nilaouise Carnes Bonner, he was raised in a college environment, almost literally in the shadows of the campus of Furman University (Greenville, S.C). His father retired from Furman as Vice President and Provost, having served Furman for over thirty years as professor and, eventually, as chief academic officer. Frank’s parents instilled in him the values he still holds dear. To this day, his father is his model for everything that a teacher, academic leader, and university administrator should be. Frank Bonner graduated in 1969 from Furman with a B.A. degree in English. Coincidentally, his major professor was Dr. Phil L. Elliott, son of the legendary president of Gardner-Webb from 1943 until 1961, Phillip Lovin Elliott. After Furman, Bonner earned the M.A. from the University of Georgia in 1971, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. His specialty is Victorian literature, primarily the poetry of Alfred Tennyson, and eighteenth-century British literature, with a special interest in Jonathan Swift. In 1974, Bonner began his academic career as a faculty member at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. He was particularly active in civic life in Anderson, most notably as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Anderson County School District Five. Bonner was assigned various administrative responsibilities at Anderson and, immediately prior to coming to Gardner-Webb, was Associate Dean for Special Programs. In 1987, Bonner came to Gardner-Webb as Vice President for Academic Affairs. His role later evolved into Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and then Provost and Senior Vice President. He was named President in May 2005 and took office on July 1. Bonner has been heavily involved in accreditation work through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), serving on more than thirty accreditation committees, most of those as the committee chair. He is a member of the SACSCOC Board of Trustees and serves on the Compliance and Reports Committee. He has also served on the nominating committee for the Commission on Colleges and has chaired four NCAA Division I Recertification visiting committees. Bonner is currently Vice President of the Big South Conference, Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. While at Gardner-Webb, Bonner has remained active in civic affairs, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America Piedmont Council. He is a past chair of the Cleveland County Chamber, a Rotary past President, a Paul Harris Fellow, and he has been a board member for numerous organizations. He is a member of First Baptist Church, Shelby, where he teaches Sunday School and serves as a Deacon. After twenty-two years in the United States Army Reserve, Bonner retired at the rank of Colonel. Bonner is married to Florence Dell (Flossie) Black of Chester, South Carolina, also a Furman graduate. She is a retired high school mathematics teacher. They have two daughters, Alison Bonner Dalton of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Florence Bonner Crawford of Fort Myers, Florida. The Bonners have six grandchildren.

THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE The Southern Conference, which began its 93rd season of intercollegiate competition in 2013, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on Capital One Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.
