While I was enjoying my ice cream inside the

Cars & Coffee The Los Angeles Section recently had a look behind something many of us see daily, coffee. Just outside of the heat of downtown, in the city of Vernon, is the Gaviña coffee roasting plant. Whether or not you recognize the name, you have more than likely had their coffee. At over 1 million square feet (and growing), this huge, state-of-the art facility is filled with coffee from all over the world and equipment that is larger and more intricate than a house, all orchestrated by a dedicated team of professionals. What one may find astounding is that this is a family business, and despite its size and success, it certainly feels like one. We were able to get a personal, guided tour and tasting by Michael and Frank Gaviña, who graciously shared with the inner-workings of this amazing facility, explained the various types and origins of coffee, as well as shared their own family’s history. The passion is clear, from the enthusiasm of sharing the factory, to the sustainable business practices, ethical sourcing, and to our cupping (tasting) at the end. This was truly the fabled “cars and coffee” at the highest level! Mercedes-Benz Club of America Los Angeles Section Newsletter

www.300slclassic.org Applications are now open for the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Classic, the first ever 300 SL specific all-inclusive event with full support for rally enthusiasts, celebrating the engineering legacy and design heritage of the world’s first super car – the 300 SL. The 300 SL Foundation, formed by members of the Gull Wing Group International car club, in partnership with the Mercedes-Benz Circle of Excellence, the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center and the producers of the Going To The Sun Rally, has created the 300 SL Classic rally. For four days this November (4-8), participants in the 300 SL Classic will drive 1000 miles of the best backroads that northern Arizona has to offer: from Scottsdale to Winslow to Sedona to the Grand Canyon and back to Scottsdale. This 4-day 1000-mile rally will be similar in format to the Colorado Grand and the Copperstate 1000 – except that it will be a 300 SL - only event. The 300 SL Classic rally team is a group of enthusiasts with a wide range of vintage car rally interests and experience who share a passion for these iconic cars. Collectively the organizing team has compiled over 300,000 miles of rally seat time over the last decade. The routes for the 2018 300 SL Classic have been scouted and the lodging and catering plans are first class. Mechanical support will be provided by the expert team of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center. In addition flatbed support, luggage assistance and overnight security will be provided for participating vehicles from start to finish.

We have established the 300 SL Foundation as a separate charitable 501(c)(3) foundation (status applied for) to receive participants’ fees and seek sponsor support, to manage the rally, and to make donations to worthy charities, including our charity partner - Laureus Sport For Good Foundation USA. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a very special rally open exclusively to 300 SL Coupes “Gullwings” and Roadsters. A not-to-be-missed opportunity to enjoy a few days of challenging roads and explore the less traveled wide open spaces of the American West with the camaraderie of like-minded friends.
