an analysis of the acoustic environment within the locker room at dubai offshore sailing club. Moments along a thirty second period of heavy use are mapped.

A group exercise for the masterplanning of thirteen sustainable mixed use dwellings in grangetown, cardiff. two typologies, a townhouse and a mews house were developed.

individual development of the townhouse typology, I took a three bedroom, five person unit and developed it in conjunction with the masterplan’s parti.

an Airport masterplan for newport. with two terminals, it is of similar scale and passenger capacity to manchester airport, and follows the stansted satellite model.

analysis of public amenities in pontypridd; it was interesting to interrogate the success of local retail, and we took a three dimensional approach to mapping the trends.

1.measure

My sailing club is a place of great sentimental value to me. The locker room was a place to cool off after a day in the sun, its sounds and atmosphere truly unique. I attempted to measure these subjective experiences through analysis of sound. thirty seconds proved to encompass the feel of the acoustic environment well. I also sought to perform a hertzberger analysis of how one finds privacywithin a public space.

the room gains heat most quickly through the windows, and the ac works to balance the effect.

2.Masterplan

grangetown is an area lacking community spirit, and one main design challenge was to create a sense of engagement with not only residents of the development itslef, but also the wider communiity as a whole. We saw a mixed use development with community centre, dining and retail linking two housing typologies as a solution which creaties oppurtunities for community interaction.

3.Dwelling

Taking the larger townhouse typology from the masterplan forward, I developed a three bedroom, four person house. The parti of the project was to continue the mass/void rhythm from the masterplan and reduce it to a domestic scale. I achieved this by creating a heavy brick wall to the north, housing the dwelling’s services, stairs and toilets, dissolving into a permeable timber clad south facade and terrace, transmitting light inside.

4.Airport

I was commissioned by students from the cardiff school of city and regional planning to develop a masterplan for a two terminal airport and airport city east of newport. The scheme is futureproofed, with runways and taxiways to accommodate the largest aircraft, and uses a typology of terminals as easy to navigate ‘sheds’ with services below, and isolated sattelite buildings for boarding and disboarding, accessible by train.

5.Analyse

By analysing pontypridd’s public amenities, location, frequency and success, we are able to better understand the city and make a considered intervention in the forthcoming project. after mapping general amenities, we discovered drastic trends in retail success with location along what is essentially a very short high street. modelling this in the form of a three dimensional bar graph allowed us to better understand the trend.

“The public toilets are extremely well maintained, what are your thoughts on their location?” “no one knows they’re there, and the ones in town are 20p a pee. pontypridd needs more public toilets.” [Museum and visitor’s centre coordinator]

marcus o’connell: wsa public amenities: Marcus O’Connell, chris ma, Ben Ludlow

Towards the north end of the high STreet, up to 90% of shops have gone out of business. local businesses and commercial high STreet names alike have suffered decreased trade as big brands take over the city centre. A similar, although less severe effeCT was observed at the south end of the STreet.
