Who’s Next in the queue?

line up: Shoppers queue up for the opening of Next at Affinity. Below, store manager Jemma Deeley. Pictures: Steve Bould

Shoppers line up for the opening of designer outlet Bethan Shufflebotham bethan.shufflebotham@reachplc.com

Shoppers queued out of the doors of Affinity Staffordshire as a brand new retailer opened. Fashion giant Next launched its 6,000sqft outlet store in the Talke shopping centre yesterday morning. Shoppers started a socially distanced queue outside the shop at 10.25am, ahead of its 11am opening time. But the ribbon was cut early, allowing customers in at 10.50am after queues stretched outside of the shopping centre towards the car park. First in the queue was Ryan Pender, aged 31, from Tunstall, who said: “We were gutted when the Tunstall one closed, so have come up to see if there are any bargains for the kids. “With up to 75 per cent off it’s a good deal, and you can get everything in one place at Affinity.” Thirty-year-old Jess Brough queued up with her daughter to do some birthday shopping. Jess, from Stone, said: “I didn’t realise the store was opening

today, but I could see the queue growing so thought I’d better get in it quickly. “It’s my daughter’s 10th birthday and she’s already spotted a jacket she likes through the window.” Next closed its Tunstall branch – which has been replaced by Poundland – during the coronavirus pandemic. It now has stores in Longton, Hanley, Festival Park, Stafford and Crewe, alongside the newly opened Talke outlet. The new store is allowing 23 customers in at a time, excluding pushchairs, and there are social distancing stickers around the store to remind people to follow Covid-19 safety measures.

There is a one-way system in place in the former Sports Direct unit, with separate entrance and exits. The store is selling children’s clothing, men and ladies fashion, homeware and gifts. Prices at the outlet start at £1, with men’s suits costing just £14, and last-minute holiday bikinis for £3. Manager Becca Cottier, aged 23, from Congleton, said: “We are so excited to open the new outlet and have some amazing deals in. “You won’t find these offers on the website, it’s only in the outlet. “We can’t wait to get to know our customers and make sure people get some excellent bargains in time for Christmas.”

Pupils told to stay at home after contact with virus Several students have been told to stay off school after coming into contact with somebody who has tested positive for coronavirus. The King’s CE School, in Kidsgrove, has not revealed whether the person diagnosed with Covid-19 is a pupil or a member of staff. But in a message sent to

parents, the school said: “Following advice from Public Health England, a small minority of our school community have been required, as a precautionary measure, to self-isolate following contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus. “The school remains open to all other students and our risk assessment is reviewed regularly

to ensure our students and staff remain as safe as possible.” The King’s is one of a growing number of Staffordshire secondary schools to have at least one confirmed coronavirus case. Others include Moorside High, in Werrington, St John Fisher Catholic College, in Newcastle, Biddulph High School and King Edward VI High, in Stafford.

‘This isn’t a film or a TV show, it’s real life... it’s my life’ Street attack victim features on Critical Condition tonight

scene: Police outside the Co-op in West Street, Leek.

Hayley P arker hayley.parker@reachplc.com

A Stoke City employee was left fighting for his life after being attacked in the street. Daniel Vickers suffered severe head injuries when he was punched on a night out in Leek. The 29-year-old was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital’s major trauma centre where doctors and nurses battled to save his life. Now his brush with death will be be retold when the first episode of the second series of 999 Critical Condition screens tonight. Daniel, a sports therapist at Stoke City FC Academy, said: “My first memory of the treatment at Royal Stoke was when I woke up and was asked if I knew where I was. “I was totally numb and in complete shock once everything was explained to me. “I was only in hospital for one week, but I don’t think I realised or came to terms with what had happened until three or four months later. “It has made me realise that you really don’t know what life is going to throw at you until something like this happens. “This isn’t a film or television show, it is real life, it’s my life.” Daniel, of Belle Vue Road, Leek, was assaulted outside the Co-op, in West Street, on July 19 last year. He suffered a bleed on the brain

/stokeontrentlive

SAFE HANDS: Dr Richard Fawcett, the trauma team leader and consultant who treated Daniel Vickers, right. and doctors had to relieve the pressure in his head by drilling a hole in his skull. A year later, following intensive physiotherapy, he is finally back on the mend, but has suffered many months of hearing and balance problems. He said: “I have life-changing injuries and am now severely deaf in one ear and moderately deaf in the other. “I still get headaches and dizziness, but I am determined to get back to work and live my life. “I remember a doctor telling me when I was discharged that it would be long and slow recovery time. “I work as a sports therapist and thought I can rehab myself, but when it’s brain and skull you have to be patient and let it take time to heal.”

The hard-hitting documentary features the hospital’s clinical teams as they confront the realities of emergency medicine. Among those tuning in will be Daniel’s grateful mum Yvonne Smith. Recalling the horror of that night, she said: “The whole experience was totally surreal and I couldn’t believe it was happening. “It was incredibly traumatic and if it wasn’t for the people who treated him at Royal Stoke, he wouldn’t be with us today. “I didn’t want to believe what they were telling me at the time, but was thankful they were honest and upfront. “It’s such an amazing place for head injuries and I can’t tell you how thankful we are to all the doctors and nurses involved in Dan’s care.”

Tracy Bullock, UHNM chief executive, said: “The first series of Critical Condition was so well received and we are thrilled to be part of this new series. “The series gives a unique insight into how our staff make splitsecond decisions, and how the whole of our hospital reacts to ensure that patients and families receive the best possible care.” Malcolm Brinkworth, from Brinkworth Productions which made the documentary for Channel 5, said: “ Working with the highly skilled staff at the UHNM was a real privilege. “Their dedication and expertise was humbling to watch, and we hope that viewers will see the remarkable work that goes on there day in, day out.” ■■999 Critical Condition will screen on Channel 5 at 9pm.

‘This is the biggest challenge I’ve faced’ A consultant at Stoke-on-Trent’s main hospital fears A&E being overwhelmed by a second wave of coronavirus and the knock-on effects of the first. Dr Ann-Marie Morris, below, has spoken as the Royal Stoke University Hospital prepares for a surge in cases if the newlyannounced measures prove ineffective. But she has also highlighted how the emergency department has also seen an increase in patients with alcohol-related conditions as well as more victims of violent crime. There are currently 14 people at Royal Stoke being treated for Covid-19 but this is expected to rise sharply. The city as a whole remains on the Government’s watch-list as an area of concern with an infection rate of 33.2, according to the latest figures. Dr Morris, who had Covid in April, said: “The public are worrying about a possible second wave but our second wave could be the knock-on effect from Covid. “Nationally, there has been an increase in suicides and cases of mental health illnesses. “More patients are coming through the doors with alcoholrelated conditions and we are dealing with more cases of violent crime. On top of all of that, Covid has not gone away and we are heading into winter, which is notoriously our busiest time. It is a perfect storm. Things are going to get a lot busier. I’ve worked in the NHS for two decades but make no mistake this is the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced.”

Barber’s warned after breaking rules A barber’S has been given a final warning and could be shut down after staff were caught breaking coronavirus rules. Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s trading standards team raided the business – which is in the ‘wider Burslem area’ – following a tip-off. They issued the shop with a community protection warning notice, which acts like a ‘yellow card’. If the business continues to break the rules it can be issued with a ‘red card’ and forced to close. Council leader Abi Brown said: “They were served with the notice

yesterday because staff were not wearing personal protective equipment and obviously they are required to comply with that notice. If they don’t we close them down. “We don’t have the power to fine the business because that is a police matter. “It was a tip-off from the public, as it generally is with these things, but our teams are also out and about doing premises visits. “We haven’t yet closed a barber’s down in the city but we can and it’s definitely an option that is being seriously considered.”

The Big Issue

Will Covid-19 contact tracing app be effective? The Health Foundation says there has been a failure to demonstrate how the technology has performed during trials

M

ajor questions about the effectiveness of the coronavirus contact tracing app have been left unanswered, a charity has warned on the eve of its launch. Failure to demonstrate how the technology has performed during testing risks denting public confidence as its success depends on uptake, the Health Foundation said. The NHS Covid-19 app is set to be released across England and Wales today to support the NHS Test and Trace effort, following months of delays, technical hitches and privacy issues. It uses Bluetooth technology to keep an anonymous log of those in close proximity to a user and can notify them if someone who was near them later tested positive for coronavirus.

DOWNLOAD APP: The technology was trialled on the Isle of Wight. The latest version of the app has been trialled on the Isle of Wight and in the London borough of Newham since mid-August. The charity is concerned people

have yet to see the results of these pilots and is calling for greater transparency around the development. It also wants assurances the

technology will not exacerbate existing health inequalities, leaving some people at greater risk of coronavirus than others. “With a virus that is transmitted as quickly as Covid-19, the automated contact tracing that the app promises could prove invaluable in reducing its spread,” said Josh Keith, a senior fellow at the Health Foundation. “Also, the additional features of the app, such as booking a test, reporting symptoms or checking the risk level in postcode district could provide a helpful single source of Covid-19 related advice and support. “However, for any major, nationwide public health intervention it is important the Government publishes evidence that it is effective and ready for mass rollout in advance of its launch. “This is key for building confidence in the app as people will want to know that it will benefit them and their communities. “But any data on the pilots that took place in August have been notably absent, leaving major questions over the app’s effectiveness unanswered.”

The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) responded saying that trials have shown the app works accurately and responsively, with positive feedback from users. Major mobile phone operators have also committed to “zerorating” all data charges, meaning customers will not be charged for data when using the app. “Ensuring a wide range of people download and use the app is essential,” a DHSC spokesperson said. “The NHS Covid-19 app forms a central part of NHS Test and Trace in England, and works alongside traditional contact tracing services and testing, to help individuals to understand if they are at risk of infection so they can take action to protect themselves and their communities. “We have spoken with groups with protected characteristics, such as age, ethnicity and disability, those experiencing health inequalities and those groups particularly impacted by coronavirus and the app and supporting material will be available in multiple languages.”

‘Risk in breaching international treaty’ Jonathan Gullis MP’s Personally Speaking article (Sentinel, September 22) reads almost as if it were a script handed out by the Conservative Party. The entire point, which Mr Gullis, right, seems to miss, is that the purpose of this Bill is to enable the United Kingdom to breach an international treaty – the withdrawal agreement with the EU – negotiated by Boris Johnson and enacted into law by Parliament in January of this year, when I dare say Mr Gullis voted for it. Mr Gullis remarks that the presentation of this Bill to

Parliament is not contrary to international law. This is disingenuous of him. Of course, mere presentation of the Bill is not contrary to international law, but if the Bill is enacted that will entail a breach of international law, as the Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis told the House of Commons in presenting the Bill. Mr Gullis says it is not by any means unusual to present legislation of this kind. Is Mr Gullis really saying that it is not unusual for the UK to breach the terms of treaties into which it has entered? Mr Gullis supposes there will be no risk to the Good Friday Agreement if the relevant provisions of the Withdrawal Agreement are breached.

The contrary is the case, as many commentators have pointed out. An essential provision of the Good Friday Agreement was the maintenance of an open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic. The Withdrawal Agreement seeks, so far as possible, to preserve that position. If it is breached in that respect the Republic, as a member of the EU, will no longer be able to keep an open border. Such a state of affairs would risk a beginning of more troubles in Northern Ireland. The Dublin government is dismayed about the course which the UK appears to be taking with the presentation of this Bill. Finally, whatever the outcome of the presidential election in America, both the Republicans and the Democrats have made it clear that if this Bill is enacted there will

‘Leave important issues to experts’ May I just ask a question? Why is Derek Payne, of Milton, on this relentless pursuit of the Government? I suggest he keeps his biased thoughts to himself and, as I’ve said on previous occasions, concentrate on matters closer to home and leave the most important

Shockingly, appalling. We voted based on Brexit, now I think they’re showing true colours under this pandemic. They’re not suitable to run the UK.

There’s only an outbreak because the Government says there’s an outbreak. They have the people scared witless so they go

I certainly would not have liked to have seen the mess Labour would have made of it all. I’m sick of it, the same as everyone else, but Boris is doing all he can in the circumstances.

Helen Adams

Put it this way, I wouldn’t like to have had to handle and make decisions.

Peter Dale

‘The fine needs to be revoked because it isn’t fair’ ‘Distraught’ benefit claimant fears bailiffs after fly-tipping fine Fahad T ariq fahad.tariq@reachplc.com

Benefit claimant Talitha Beales faces possible court action because of a ‘ridiculous’ £400 fly-tipping fine. Stoke-on-Trent City Council imposed the penalty after accusing the 21-year-old of dumping a chair and an empty cardboard box in an alleyway near her home. But Talitha says she had never seen the chair before – and she had last placed the box on top of her wheelie bin outside her Lovatt Street home. Now her furious mum – Angela Hartley – is calling on the council to revoke the fine. The 43-year-old, of Stoke, said: “My daughter had a delivery from

Amazon and then put the little cardboard box on her bin which is outside her front door. She says somebody has moved the box onto a sofa chair in the back alley across the road from her house. “They must have gone through the box to see if there was anything inside, and when they realised there was nothing in it they discarded it onto the chair. “The council’s fly-tipping people have then come along, seen her box on this chair, and done her for flytipping the chair. “She doesn’t even own a chair like that and there is no way she could have moved the chair on her own. She is distraught.” Talitha suffers with anxiety and is receiving Employment and Support Allowance and sickness benefit after being signed off work. She and her three dogs have moved

in with her mum because she fears bailiffs coming for the money. Angela added: “The fine needs to be revoked because it is not fair. I’ve even asked the council to come and look at her furniture to prove she hasn’t got chairs like that. “In my opinion, the council is an absolute disgrace.” The case has been referred to the authority’s legal team. A spokesman said: “We have been in contact with Miss Beales about this alleged incident. “As it is an ongoing matter, it would not be appropriate to comment further on this specific case. “We would like to remind residents, in general, to continue to dispose of their rubbish correctly and responsibly, using their household wheelie bins, the two tip sites or our bulky waste collections.”

dispute: The empty cardboard box Talitha put out, with the chair it was found on top of.

lder people vote more than any other age group and in the last election a majority of them voted Conservative. If they want to get in next time, I suggest the Government tread very carefully. After denying free TV licences to the over-75s and failing to protect thousands in care homes from the Coronavirus, it is now clear that they are contemplating abandoning their manifesto pledge to maintain the state pension triple lock. Instead of undermining the value of the state pension, the Government should be tackling pensioner poverty – which affects hundreds of thousands of people across the UK. Introduced in 2010, the triple lock is a legal guarantee that the basic state pension will rise in line with the highest of earnings, inflation or 2.5 per cent. Since that time, the triple lock has helped to increase the value of the pension – although it hardly allows people to live in the lap of luxury. The new state pension – for people who retired after 2016 – is just £9,110 a year. For those who retired before then, it is much less. Now, influential people, such as the think tank the Social Market Foundation, are suggesting that, because the young are bearing the economic brunt of the fight against the pandemic, the Government should make older people pay for the recovery by abandoning the triple lock. They say that it is only fair. In my 25 years working for the North Staffs Pensioners’ Convention, I have noticed that cutbacks and closures for the poorest are always advocated by those who have never had to scrimp and save in their lives. Also, cutbacks and closures are often put forward by these people on the basis that it is fairer. One group of deprived people are getting

Bring to mind Jacob Rees-Mogg lying back on the benches of the House of Commons – should you go without to keep him in the manner to which he has become accustomed?

more than another deprived group so we will bring them down to the same level to make it even. Perish the thought that you might ask the well off to pay more. To abandon the triple lock would be an attack on the principle of collective security in retirement and would be divisive. It would not just damage the present generation of older people, it would undermine the income of future pensioners. So the very people the Social Market Foundation claim they are being fair to will suffer as well. This is not about fairness, it is about ideology. The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, right, is hinting that he might be listening to those advocating walking away from the Conservatives’ triple lock promise. He would do so at his peril. Instead of cutting the state pension, the Government’s priority should be to fix the failing system in place to protect the poorest pensioners. Nearly four million older people today have an income that does not even reach basic levels and so they qualify for extra support in the form of Pension Credit. But they do not automatically receive the money they need – they are required to make a claim. As a result, it is estimated that about 1.6 million of that four million – two out of every five of those over 66 who are entitled to Pension Credit – do not apply. Why is this? Some do not realise they may qualify, some think it will be too complicated to make an application, some are worried about other people knowing about their financial affairs and others are too proud. This means that huge numbers of older people in Britain end up scratching out

a living, going without meals or afraid to turn on the heating because they do not have enough to live on. These are often people in the early stages of dementia, or suffering with poor mental or physical health. Pension Credit is called a safety net – but it’s a safety net full of holes. If the Government is serious about eradicating poverty in retirement they should ensure that every pensioner has at least a basic level of income as of right. But I am not holding my breath. It saves the Government money to turn a blind eye and allow people to struggle on in poverty. In the absence of effective Government action to improve the system, I urge older people to claim what is rightfully theirs. If it helps to convince pensioners who are reluctant to make an application, just bring to mind the image of Jacob ReesMogg lying back on the benches of the House of Commons and ask yourself if you should go without to keep him in the manner to which he has become accustomed. Not one older person should be struggling on the breadline in Britain today. For help in making a claim you can ring the Age UK advice line on 0800 678 1602. The line is open from 8am to 7pm every day of the week. Otherwise, the website is www.ageuk.org.uk.

Princess Beatrice alongside her wedding dress ahead of it going on public display at Windsor Castle from today

BRIEFING

The Colston name being removed from the venue

Colston name goes

A well-known music venue named after 17th century slave trader Edward Colston has been renamed as Bristol Beacon. The venue in Bristol city centre was built almost 150 years after the controversial slave trader’s death and the announcement of the new name is part of a £49 million refurbishment. Three years ago, the Bristol Music Trust, which runs the venue, said that the name would be changed in 2020.

Vaccination concern A fifth of people in the UK say they are unlikely to get a coronavirus vaccine if one is approved, a study highlighting “concerning” levels of misinformation has found. Three-quarters (78%) of 17,500 adults

surveyed by University College London researchers said they would be “likely” to get vaccinated, with 49% saying they were “very likely” to do so. But 22% said this was unlikely, and one in 10 said this was “very unlikely”.

Lorry permits plan

Lorry drivers will need permits to access Kent or face police action in a bid to avoid post-Brexit gridlock, the Government has said. Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove said work is ongoing to avoid the possibility of 7,000-truck-long queues in the county caused by a lack of preparation for December’s Brexit transition. And Tory former minister Damian Green has sought guarantees a system will be in place to help the smooth running of traffic across the Channel.

Beatrice merchandise goes on sale OFFICIAL souvenirs marking Princess Beatrice’s royal nuptials have gone on sale ahead of an exhibition of her vintage wedding dress. Royal fans can buy a china tankard and pillbox, shortbread biscuits, strawberry truffles and a tea towel, with all items featuring the image of a bee – a play on

Beatrice’s name to family and friends. The princess and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi’s wedding plans were left in disarray when the country went into coronavirus lockdown in March. The Queen’s granddaughter and her property tycoon partner were originally due to

marry in May in the Chapel Royal followed by a reception in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. But they eventually wed in a private ceremony, which was not made public beforehand, at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge, Windsor on July 17, in front of just a handful of

guests including the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. The souvenirs are decorated with the couple’s initials and feature pink roses, peonies, lemon blossom and thistles, secured with the white rose of York. The wedding gown goes on display at Windsor Castle from today.

Sunak focuses on plan to save jobs

Rishi Sunak has cancelled this year’s Budget and will instead prioritise protecting millions of jobs in sectors hit by the latest Government guidance on Covid-19. The Treasury said the Chancellor would outline his plans to extend and replace financial support during an appearance in Parliament today. His move comes after increasing pressure from business groups, MPs and unions to extend the furlough scheme as stricter restrictions are introduced. Number 11 said work on the scheme, first revealed by the Chancellor on Twitter, had been taking place in parallel with Budget preparations and the focus has been on jobs to avoid the expected three million unemployed. The Treasury said: “We will always be honest with people about the difficult trade-offs that are involved here. “Not between health and the economy, but between keeping people in jobs and helping them find new ones. And between help in the here and now and rebuilding in the future. That’s what people deserve.” The Chancellor initially announced his move via Twitter, with a graphic titled

Boris Johnson during PMQs yesterday

“Winter Economy Plan”. No further details were provided and it came as the Government confirmed more than 6,000 new coronavirus cases by 9am yesterday – the highest daily number since May 1. It also said a further 37 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid19 as of yesterday. This brings the UK total to 41,862. A source close to the Treasury said: “Noone wanted to be in this situation but we need to respond to it. “The Chancellor has shown he has been creative in the past and we hope that peo-

ple will trust us to continue in that vein. Giving people reassurance and businesses the help they need to get through this is uppermost in his mind.” The move followed comments by Prime Minister Boris Johnson about a “creative and imaginative” action plan to protect jobs, with unions and business leaders pointing to schemes used in other European countries. Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey said on Tuesday it was time to “stop and rethink” the furlough scheme in favour of a targeted approach. The Trades Union Congress, which outlined its furlough replacement proposal last month, said the Government must “fast-track a new plan” to protect jobs. The mooted plans would reportedly see the Government and firms share the cost of topping up wages for employees only able to work part-time due to the pandemic. At Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Johnson was repeatedly challenged about the looming prospect of support being withdrawn from firms and workers despite the prospect of the latest restrictions being in place for six months.

Burglar triggered business’s CCTV Owner watched thief, 31, in the act

Sentinel R eporter newsdesk@thesentinel.co.uk

Burglar Brad Jones was caught red-handed after the owner of a business he broke into watched him on CCTV from his home. The 31-year-old broke into a unit in Stoke on July 10. But he activated motion sensitive security cameras and one of the owners watched him moving around and called the police who caught him by a nearby canal. About a month later Jones broke into a room at a hostel and stole car keys to a Ford Fiesta while the owner slept. He crashed the car in Kidsgrove before abandoning it. Now Jones has been jailed for 21 months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, pictured. Prosecutor Daniel Oscroft said he entered a business unit at Lytton Street at 9.45pm. Mr Oscroft said: “He gained access through a small toilet

window. The reason he was caught was he activated the motion sensitive CCTV. “One of the owners watched the defendant moving around. He found the keys for a high value Audi sports car. He got in the vehicle and sat in it. He had a torch with him. “The police turned up with a police dog and searched the premises. The defendant tried to escape. The officer saw the defendant standing near a wall. He was talked down from jumping in the canal and was arrested and taken into custody.” Jones told police he had sat in a Mercedes van inside a separate unit. He accepted he had been a trespasser. He failed to appear at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on August 11 and while at large he burgled a room at a hostel at Etruscan House in Castlefield Street, Hanley, on August 17.

Mr Oscroft said: “He was staying at the hostel but he entered a room he was not allowed access to. “The resident had three vehicles. He took a bunch of keys from the man’s room and stole a Ford Fiesta. He took the vehicle and crashed into a lamppost causing damage to various parts of the vehicle.” Jones, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to three offences of burglary and aggravated vehicle taking. Stuart Muldoon, mitigating, said there have been significant gaps in Jones’s offending with no offences committed between 2006 and 2013. He was working as a bricklayer but lost his job as a result of lockdown. Mr Muldoon said: “He tried monkey dust on a number of occasions and he committed these offences. He was under the influence of drugs when he committed the burglary.” Judge Paul Glenn disqualified Jones from driving for 18 months. The ban will start when he is released from jail.

Officer lost control of his bike in ‘tragic moment of over-excitement’ Farewell: Fellow police officers form a guard of honour for Luke Van De Sande as his funeral cortege passes Hanley Station.

Experienced rider had ‘unblemished’ record Aimi Redfern aimi.redfern@reachplc.com

Experienced motorcyclist Luke Van De Sande died after a ‘moment of overexcitement’ saw him lose control of his bike and crash. The 28-year-old Staffordshire Police officer, from Trentham, was off-duty and riding with friends when the collision happened at Cold Meece last August. An inquest into his death heard he lost control while manoeuvring an S-bend between Swynnerton and Yarnfield – a route he was not familiar with – which caused his motorbike to leave the carriageway and collide with a tree. He suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene. In a statement, Luke’s childhood sweetheart and wife of three years, Abbie, said: “He had always been a happy-go-lucky person. He was a free spirit. He was happy with his home and work life. “He always had a great passion for motorbikes. He had a lot of experience and had owned all types and sizes of bikes. He was a very confident rider and was used to riding on various roads in different weather conditions. “He was a very safety conscious person and was very capable of servicing and maintaining his bike.” Luke joined Staffordshire Police in 2014 and became a full-time PC in 2017. He had been accepted to train as a firearms officer shortly before he died. The inquest heard he would often go out riding with his brother Adam – also a police officer – and other colleagues on his rest days. On the day of the collision, August 27 last year, he met up with two friends and fellow officers – Ben Allen and Andrew Shackleton – for a ride. They were able to communicate through Bluetooth devices in their helmets. As they travelled along Swynnerton Road, Luke overtook his friends as they approached an S-bend. In a statement, Mr Shackleton said: “Luke was a keen and passionate rider. Out of the group of motorcyclists I would ride with, he was the most talented.

‘free spirit’: Luke Van De Sande joined Staffordshire Police in 2014. “I was maintaining a distance behind Ben. I was shocked to hear and see Luke coming past me. As he passed both me and Ben were braking as we approached the bend. I heard Ben say, ‘Watch the bend’. “Luke’s manoeuvre surprised me – it was a moment of over-excitement. In my view he went into the bend too fast to be able to negotiate it.” Luke’s bike moved out of his friends’ sight prior to the collision. An investigation concluded that, having travelled around a left-hand bend, his orange KTM bike was in the wrong position to negotiate the upcoming right-hand bend. As he braked, one of his wheels locked and the bike travelled towards the nearside grass verge, crashing into a fence and a tree. Assistant coroner Sarah Murphy concluded that Luke’s death was as a result of a road traffic collision. She said: “Very tragically, this was a moment of over-excitement in an otherwise unblemished history of motorcycle riding.” Since Luke’s death, thousands of pounds has been raised for charity in his memory, including DocBike, which aims to eradicate motorcyclerelated deaths in the UK by educating riders and also provide roadside critical care in the form of motorbikeriding medics. The organisation’s Staffordshire arm is dedicated to Luke.

The show must not go on... Christmas panto is cancelled for 2020 Tom Burnett thomas.burnett@reachplc.com

JUST a day after saying its Christmas pantomime is going ahead this year, the Regent Theatre has revealed that ‘oh no, it isn’t’. On Tuesday, the Ambassador Theatre Group, which operates the Regent and Victoria Hall, confirmed all shows were suspended until November due to the coronavirus restrictions. Although it was hoped the deadline would mean Cinderella – the panto due to run from December 11 to January 3, 2021 – could go ahead, it has also now fallen foul of the coronavirus crisis. The performance has been postponed until next Christmas. Announcing the decision yesterday afternoon, the theatre said: “We can confirm our 2020 pantomime is moving to Christmas 2021/22. “While this is sad news, we are delighted that the magnificent production will return next year. “We will be contacting all

Stoke-on-Trent-born actor Jonny Wilkes has appeared in 14 pantomimes in the city. Speaking to The Sentinel in July, he said: “The thought of not giving a panto to the people of Stokeon-Trent is heartbreaking and something I can’t even think about right now. “Theatres are feel-good places where you get that escapism – and that’s something that we need right now. I hope we can come up with a strategy and a timeline now to get them open.”

What adds extra poignancy is that it is definitely a play for its time. It celebrates the dedication and spirit of workers and residents in care homes during what has been a traumatic time for them. But for me it also marked a welcome return for live theatre. Performers and theatres have perhaps felt a little bit ‘left behind’ by Government measures aimed at tackling the economic crisis caused by Covid-19. But this play shows more than ever why the industry matters. Watching (or listening) to imaginative writing and performing is important for mental wellbeing. I’ve missed live theatre. Here, for 20 minutes, I got to sample it again. And I feel all the better for it. n With Arts Council funding, the play is now virtually touring across England. The first week of performances are taking place in Stoke-on-Trent until Saturday to groups and individuals shielding or affected by the pandemic. pandemic. To help stop the spread of coronavirus, from March 30, the Government put in place temporary measures so eligible women and girls could take both pills for early (up to 10 weeks) medical abortion at home, following a telephone or e-consultation with a doctor. Between January and June, 86% of abortions in England and Wales were performed at under 10 weeks, compared to 81% in January to June 2019. That proportion has increased over the period, from 84% in January to 90% in June. The Government has committed to consulting the public on whether to make the measure permanent and women’s healthcare providers are keen to see the changes continue. Clare Murphy, Deputy Chief Executive at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) said: “These figures illustrate that access to abortion care has been one of the few healthcare success stories of this pandemic, with women able to access the help and support they need earlier in pregnancy. “Abortion is considerably safer than carrying a pregnancy to term, but the earlier it can be performed once a woman is certain of her decision, the better for both her physical and mental health.” She said telephone and e-consultations mean women don’t have to travel, sometimes considerable distances, to clinics, while juggling childcare and working commitments. RACING

Yazaman To Relish Newmarket Test Yazaman appears to have been crying out for a step up in trip and should relish seven furlongs in the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket. While William Haggas’ juvenile may not be the most straightforward horse in training, it is clear for all to see he is well above average. So far this season he has been placed in the Windsor Castle, July Stakes, the Richmond and a valuable sales race at Doncaster last time out. That contest was over six and a half furlongs, and not for the first time he was doing all his best work in the closing stages - which is surprising, considering he had the pace to be second over five furlongs at Royal Ascot. He wore a visor for the first time at Doncaster, in place of his customary blinkers, but never actually looked like winning at any stage.

What is not in doubt, though, is that he possesses plenty of ability. He gets 5lb from Ventura Tormenta, and may have more to fear from the onceraced La Barrosa - who nonetheless needs to take a big step up. Mildenberger has been seen just once since racing resumed in early June - but on a line through that run against stablemate Nayef Road in the Sagaro Stakes at Newcastle more than three months ago, he should prove very hard to beat in the Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes. The five-year-old has clearly had a problem since that big effort, but you never normally have to worry about fitness where his trainer Mark Johnston is concerned. While Mildenberger’s best form has been on the all-weather, he does have a win at Newmarket to his credit - so it is not as if he does not act on turf.

Dabbers’ delight as they break duck to take home county cup NANTWICH captain Ray Doyle admitted his side had completed their summer mission after lifting the Cheshire Cup. The Dabbers beat Cheadle in Sunday’s final to secure that particular piece of silverware for the first time in their history. The victory not only brought the curtain down on Nantwich’s season, but provided their campaign with some meaning after a strange time on the field. Recreational cricket was badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with leagues across the county being forced to revise their plans - and in some cases scrap them altogether. Nantwich were left playing a mixture of Twenty20 and 40over matches in a revised league programme, which meant that the cup had even more significance for them this year. “We spoke about targeting the Cheshire Cup because we had never won it before,” said Doyle. “The league was where we could try a few things out and learn because it didn’t mean anything. “Saturday cricket didn’t have the intensity that we are used to, although it was great to be out there with the lads. “We started off playing some T20 stuff and could test some aspects of our game like seeing what Griff (Ollie Griffiths) was like at the top of the order or if we used a particular bowler at a particular time. “We did learn a bit, but it wasn’t the same, so that’s why we focused on the Cheshire Cup. “If we had been knocked out of that early on, I’m not sure what our season would have looked like.” Doyle, pictured, won the toss on their visit to Cheadle and opted to field - and saw his bowlers turn in a fine display. They dismissed their hosts for 168 off the final ball of their 40-over allocation, with the skipper himself leading the way with 3-22. There were also a couple of wickets for spinner Griffiths, while Subhaan Mahmood was the star turn with the bat for Cheadle.

He made a run-a-ball 70, hitting four fours and three sixes, while Elliott Bullock (38) and Dan Brown (26) lent valuable support. “The way we have been batting this year 168 was a decent target,” admitted Doyle. “We bowled really well and it looked like they were going to go beyond 200 because it was the flattest wicket we’d played on this summer. “So to keep them to what we did was a good effort and it was nice from my point of view to pick up a few wickets.” Doyle then played a key role with the bat in Nantwich’s chase. He compiled 53, off 60 balls, featuring five fours and two sixes, while Alex Paterson weighed in with 36. But it still required a typically bighitting knock from Griffiths to see the Dabbers past the post. He needed just 13 balls to make 38 not out, clearing the rope four times along the way, as Nantwich sealed a five-wicket win with three-anda-half overs LIAM Banks has been released to go. by Warwickshire County Cricket “Griff has been Club. amazing this year The 21-year-old Staffordshire with the bat. team in this season’s shortened campaign. “It’s always disappointing when we have to let a former Academy graduate go,” said Warwickshire sport director Paul Farbrace. “Liam has given a huge amount to the club during his time as a Bear and worked very hard to make the step into the professional arena. “He leaves with good wishes of everyone at Warwickshire CCC and we wish him the very best in the next stage of his career.” Banks, who has also played for Staffs, has been playing his club cricket for Hem Heath this summer in North Staffs and South Cheshire League Division One. His last appearance for Warwickshire’s first team came in September 2019 when he scored 41 in a Championship victory over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. Banks’ chances of figuring in the senior side this summer were affected by the return to fitness of Bears legend Ian Bell and the continued emergence of two other Academy prospects. All levels of football will feel pain of recent ruling I T’S been a bad week for football and our clubs. Forget who won and lost this week, the bigger picture was the news that supporters won’t be allowed back from the start of October as had been hoped. That’s been put on hold by the government because of the rise in the numbers of coronavirus cases, and now clubs and their supporters are waiting to see when the rules might change. This feels like the first big disappointment for football since games restarted at the end of last season. Okay, those games were behind closed doors but we were at least able to finish the season and it looked like things were moving on. I’m sure lots of people thought we would have to start this season behind closed doors but then, after experimenting with some fans, the numbers we could have at games would start creeping up. That’s been put on hold so it’s a big blow, not just for aspirations but also financially. Some clubs will have been hanging on by their fingernails to what they had to keep going. If a worst-case scenario is no supporters for six months then the consequences could be huge for football all the way down the pyramid. Premier League clubs who have millions coming in, also have millions going out and lots of staff. But further down the pyramid it is going to be so difficult keeping business going. It’s a huge problem, for example, for the National League who were due to start their season in October on the basis that fans would be allowed in. Some clubs will be better equipped to get through this than others, but I feel sorry for all clubs whose hard work and planning hasn’t come to fruition. Stoke City had come up with that half seasonticket plan and Port Vale had also been planning hard for a test event which would hopefully have led to regular crowds. A lot of people have put in a lot of effort and it must be demoralising for them.

away-day joy: Vale continued their good start with victory at Exeter. Picture: Gerard Austin · BACK TO the actual games and Port Vale couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season than winning both their league matches. Well, at least that’s what you might think, but John Askey made it clear after that 2-0 win at Exeter at the weekend that his team can still play better. That’s good management. I am sure John is delighted to have won the opening games without conceding a goal, but he wants his team striving to improve. He’s setting standards and not allowing people to think ‘we are a good team and we have reached where we want to be.’ It’s a good start, but with two games gone, that’s all it is. If the Vale are in mid-table or below next May there will be disappointment so it is

John’s job to keep that expectancy and level of quality as high as he can for as long as he can. · CONGRATULATIONS to Hanley Town after they got through a dramatic FA Cup tie at home to Redditch this week to reach the second qualifying round. I say dramatic because they won it 3-2 with a late penalty from none other than Ricardo Fuller. When Ric signed for Hanley at the start of the season that said everything about his love of the game and his desire to keep playing at 40. And I don’t know why anyone would be surprised that he has stepped up when it mattered. Of course he’s come off the bench to score the winner. This is Ricardo Fuller!

JOHN Askey says his Port Vale midfielders will all have an important part to play over the course of the season. The Vale have plenty of competition for those positions as they prepare for Saturday’s League Two home game against newly-promoted Harrogate Town. Danny Whitehead and Scott Burgess started on the substitutes’ bench at Exeter last weekend as the manager went with a central midfield three of Luke Joyce, Manny Oyeleke and Tom Conlon. Askey says that strength in depth is essential. He explained: “We need that because we are going to need all of them and they all put a shift in. You can’t keep doing that for the whole season, so I will have to change it up.

Legend Fuller is spot on to seal Hanley cup win BET £10+ RICARDO Fuller came off the bench to score a late winner to continue Hanley Town’s FA Cup adventure. Stoke City legend Fuller settled a fivegoal thriller in the first qualifying round against Redditch United in front of a sellout crowd at Potteries Park. Now aged 40, he signed for Hanley for the love of the game earlier this month, having played for Nantwich Town last season. He was watching from the sidelines as Kieran Brown gave Hanley the lead with a well-taken volley and then Redditch were reduced to 10 men when livewire Jack Storer was sent off during the half-time interval. Yet Thomas Rankin levelled from the spot before Brandon Horton gave the visitors the lead. Brian Barton pulled it to 2-2, however, before he was fouled to win an 85thminute penalty when Fuller made no mistake. Hanley had already beaten Lye Town and Gresley Rovers to set up Tuesday’s tie - which was the furthest they have ever reached in the competition. And they continued to break new ground with their 3-2 success ahead of the start of the North West Counties League season, which kicks off next month. NANTWICH TOWN are also through to the second qualifying round following a comfortable 4-2 win at Tividale. Northern Premier League side Nantwich were heavy favourites against their Midland League hosts... and their quality shone through.

FOOTBALL CARABAO CUP THIRD ROUND

STOKE CITY

keeping his cool: Stoke striker Tyrese Campbell slots home the winner against Gillingham. Pictures: PA & Getty Images

A WELL-TAKEN one-on-one from Tyrese Campbell – steaming on to a superb through-ball from Jordan Thompson – was the difference as Stoke City booked their spot in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Stoke dominated territory and possession against Gillingham and Campbell was the man who they wanted the big chance to fall to in the 37th minute. He was the man you’d back to show utter composure and nudge a shot in as he paced towards goal. There could and should have been a second – and Jacob Brown will forever be bemused why he had one ruled out – but one was enough this time and Stoke are safely through. One of the main debates about Stoke so far this season has been about how they can be an attacking force when playing the wing-back system; how the wing-backs can flourish going forward. This is, after all, a team that was only out-scored by Leeds and Brentford in the Championship in the time after Michael O’Neill was appointed last season – but the manager can point to results to explain why this is the way to go for now. He made eight changes – reverting to something like the starting XI that beat Wolves last week – but kept the formation. He explained in the build-up: “Most importantly you have to build a system a little bit tailored to the players you have in the building. “That is part of the rationale why we reverted to a three last season. It served us well. In pre-season it served us well. Off the back of losing a home game we can’t decide it’s not the right system. my ball: Tommy Smith puts in a challenge on Gillingham’s Alex MacDonald. “Ideally we would like to have a balance and I would personally probably prefer a 4-3-3 system, but “Up until now we’ve been happy after defeat to Bristol City, is that I’m not sure we have the players playing with 3-5-2. We can change they had been more like 5-3-2 on at this minute to get that where we that to a 3-4-3 and the system can Sunday, pushed back far too much. would like it to be. Equally, it’s not change to a 4-3-3 from there. But here Stoke were 3-5-2 if not something we wouldn’t change. “People get bogged down 3-3-4 such was the licence that “We have to get through the in systems. What we want is Tommy Smith and James McClean period of the transfer window good performances and good were given to attack. closing and knowing exactly where performances aren’t always a direct In particular, Smith, captain for we stand with the squad as well. correlation to the system. We just the night in the absence of Ryan Trimming the squad, then it’s have to be flexible and get the Shawcross (as well as Joe Allen, easier to nail something down best out of the group of players we Jack Butland, Sam Clucas, Bruno when you’ve got fewer players to have.” Martins Indi…), was constantly deal with. The problem, O’Neill eluded too getting down near the corner flag

and sending over cross after cross in the first half. The problem was either finding the right forehead or getting on the end of them – and Stoke, although they dominated the ball with 72 per cent of possession before the break, were neat and quick without quite converting that into constant danger. Still they were patient, except for one when O’Neill had broadcasters reaching for their bleeper, when Thompson tried a pot shot from 25 yards and sent it sailing into the South Stand. There were decent chances, like one falling for Smith with a left foot volley deflected wide by Zach Medley when picked out by McClean and Campbell slipping in Tashan Oakley-Booth overlapping down the inside right only to see a shot saved by Joe Walsh. O’Neill must have been licking his lips at how much Harry Souttar was getting his head on set-pieces too and from one, worked deep across for Smith, again, to cross, he forced a sharp stop from Walsh after getting Robbie McKenzie in a tangle. Jordan Thompson was looking to thread passes through massed ranks of defenders and the one he pulled off for Campbell to break the deadlock. It was low and some 50 yards, releasing Campbell behind the defence to keep his cool and finish one-on-one. The second half was little different as Stoke camped out in front of

the Boothen End. It wasn’t a feast of chances, but when the chances came they were decent. There was Souttar at dead balls again, including one occasion when he won the header that went into the first defender and was then alert to win the rebound, smacking a shot on target from the edge of the area but straight to Walsh. McClean picked out Smith again with a fine deep cross but Smith isn’t Souttar… and Tymon made the crossbar rattle with a fierce leftfooted long ranger. Steven Fletcher won’t believe he didn’t score when Smith’s cross went past Gregory and just beyond his reach, unmarked at the back. And Jacob Brown couldn’t believe it when he had a goal disallowed for a supposed push that wasn’t especially apparent in real time or watching replays. Stoke will now face a last 16 trip to either Premier League Aston Villa or Championship rivals Bristol City, who play tonight. It is Stoke’s longest run in this competition – in a season when they haven’t been in the Premier League – since a memorable jaunt in 2000/01, when they beat Charlton with a Stefan Thordarson thunderbolt and Barnsley with a Rikki Dadason debut goal before coming spectacularly unstuck against Liverpool. Yes, it is now a cup run and young players and fringe players are giving the manager genuine selection decisions. That’s exactly what he wanted.

Potters’ performance in Carabao Cup win leaves O’Neill with plenty to ponder ahead of league date

boss facing big decisions

MICHAEL O’Neill praised his junior Potters who fired Stoke City into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup and into his thoughts for the Championship trip to Preston. Stoke eased to a 1-0 victory over League One Gillingham thanks to a first-half goal from Tyrese Campbell, dominating play with 77 per cent of possession. O’Neill, who had made eight changes to his starting XI from the league and threw down the gauntlet for each of them to keep the shirt, was delighted with the response. He said: “The lads who played tonight we’ll think about for the game on Saturday and that’s all we can ask. “I said before the game for them to give me a reason to come into my consideration for the weekend and they did that. That’s what we want. Young players are now really pushing to be starting players, whether they’ve come back from loan or pushing their way through. I think they’ve added a new dimension to the squad.” He added: “We dominated possession from start to finish and it was a well-taken goal. Some of our play was excellent and we have to be better in the final third. “Steve Evans (Gillingham manager) shouted for everything the whole game! My ears were bleeding after listening to that. “But we dominated the game and clearly deserved to win it.” Campbell, who has set himself a target of double figures this season, opened his account after getting

the nod up front alongside Lee Gregory. O’Neill said: “It’s good to see him on target. Like any striker he wants to score and it was a good finish. That’s when he’s at his best, running through in that situation. He knows what he’s got to do, commits to it and it was a good finish.” He added: “I hope he gets double figures. If you’re a striker and you’re setting yourself a target of single figures we’ve got an issue! All my strikers would have that level of ambition. “It’s early in the season, lads are still finding their game legs, but tonight was positive for a lot of players.” The assist came from a wonderful long through-ball from Jordan Thompson, who was central to Stoke’s energetic midfield trio. “Jordan, I thought, played very well,” said O’Neill. “He did a lot of passes. He’s very good in that type of game, very good on the ball. “He’s growing in confidence all the time as well. There are still little areas where he needs to try to improve in terms of opening the play a little bit, but he showed the quality he has and the reason we brought him to the club. “He’s growing in stature and responsibility all the time.” It should have been 2-0, but Jacob

Brown had a goal disallowed at the death by referee David Webb. “No idea at all why,” said the manager. “I don’t know what the referee saw because it was the clearest goal you’ll see. I think

he claimed the goalkeeper was blocked, but there wasn’t one of our players within three metres of the goalkeeper. It was an incredible decision.” O’Neill will tune in to watch Aston

Villa against Bristol City tonight, knowing he’ll face the winner away next week. He said: “It’s a good tie for us. Our focus is on Saturday now, a tough game against Preston.”
