Coordinator
Hello Residents of Kerrisdale, This is my opportunity to introduce myself as the Content Coordinator for Neighbours of Kerrisdale. Here is a little background on who I am. I have a graduate degree in English Literature and have worked in marketing and communications for many years both in the corporate and the nonprofit sector, primarily the performing arts. My passion has always been focused on language and how we communicate ideas and create interest in ordinary events that have extraordinary people behind them. Everyone has an interesting story to tell whether it’s about the newest or oldest residents on your block, the neighbour who rescued your lost cat, or someone who has a unique hobby or job. We want to honour the hardworking soccer moms, dads and coaches who work together to ensure that every child in your neighbourhood gets to all the important events that make a childhood memorable. We want to share your travels whether around the world or in our magnificent province. Send us your photos, your stories, gardening tips, recipes, ideas for future feature stories. We want to hear from you so we can tell the neighborhood about people who make this community a great place to live, work, shop and raise your family! Volunteer your family or nominate a neighbor to be the focus of the monthly Resident/Business Feature. Think of a great, feel-good story to share with all the people who receive this publication. Do it now, while you have this letter in front of you. This magazine is about you and your neighbourhood. Your participation is important and I hope to hear from many of you very soon. With thanks, Richard Forzley Content Coordinator

A Life in Hospitality By Richard Forzley
Photos by Sarah Virag Life is full of unpredictable possibilities that often lead to surprising places. For John Teti that moment came in 1966 when he was offered a job in a remote BC town, an opportunity that was of little interest to a teenager. “I needed an exit plan so I could legitimately refuse the job. My mother suggested that I get involved in the family business, a decision I have never regretted,” he says. John comes from a long line of family members involved in the hospitality industry. In 1918, his family opened Puccini’s Italian restaurant on Main Street. Taking on the family mantle seemed like a good option and from 1967 to 1982, he took over management of the business and his future appeared to be settled. In 1982, he and his partner Roger Gibson leased a space in Vancouver’s warehouse district and created Richard’s on Richards, a cool old building in what is now Yaletown, complete with brick walls, high ceilings and a wood floor, a perfect venue for live music. Over the years, they went on to run a number of Irish pubs, including The Foggy Dew Irish Pub in Coquitlam, still operating today. Before that it was the Sonar Club in Gastown and the Shark Club on West Georgia in downtown Vancouver. With bars and live music as his primary business interests, the next step seemed obvious: move into the retail liquor business. 4
Together they now operate four stores in the Lower Mainland, including the Westcoast Liquor Company at 5503 West Boulevard and 38th in Kerrisdale, celebrating its 4th anniversary this year. The company offers a wide variety of fine wines and spirits but proudly specializes in authentic craft beers. “Our selection is constantly updated, ensuring that customers can find precisely what they’re looking for and learn more about the vast number of new beers available,” he says. “Our philosophy is based on providing locally produced products, particularly premium varietals and beers from BC, supplemented,” he says, “by high quality products from around the world.” The staff is always friendly and corporate support helps them stay knowledgeable through paid-for certification. “In fact, the store manager of our Kerrisdale store, Ben Treen, is one of only 40 beer sommeliers in Canada. We really do appreciate our customers and he is always available to make sure they leave happy.” For anyone unfamiliar with this relatively new designation, a beer sommelier is a trained professional who specializes in the service and knowledge of beer, including an understanding of styles, brewing, ingredients, history, glassware, beer service, draught systems, beer tasting and food pairings. June 2015
John, his wife Lori of 18 years, their 17-year-old daughter Sienna and their 10-year-old Golden Retriever named Dante, have shared a home in the Quilcena area since 2005. “My wife is a special education teacher at McKechnie Elementary, so the area is central to both of our work lives. We live in a great area with friendly neighbours. A wonderful place to raise a family,” he says. Travel is John’s other passion, although he admits it’s sometimes difficult to get the whole family’s schedule on the same page to make room for holiday time. “We go to Sun Peaks every Christmas with another family, and managed a trip to Italy a few years ago. That trip was a great opportunity to share my ancestral home with my wife and daughter.” A serious sports fan, John enjoys golf and skiing and closely follows his favourite professional teams, including the Canucks, BC Lions, the White Caps, the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Yankees. He is also a member of the Confratellanza Italo-Canadese, an organization that advances the interest of the Italian-Canadian community and its contributions to Canada’s multiculturalism. “My daughter is just as avid a sports fan as I am,” he says. “She plays ice hockey, soccer, basketball and runs track and cross-country.” An honour-roll student at West Point Grey Academy, Sienna is heading to the University of Western Ontario in the fall. “My life is very satisfying both personally and professionally. I could never have predicted the outcome when I first started on this path back in the ‘60s. Looking back it seems that it’s taken a natural progression from selling drinks in bars to selling bottles in a storefront,” he says. “I’m a contented man.” Do you know a neighbour who has a story to share? Remodeling
A BC s
ASK • BUDGET • CHOOSE By Brian Posch As we live in our homes, our wishes, desires and needs for the home change. Where you once saw a quaint little kitchen, you may now see nothing more than an obstacle to efficient living. Our homes are the largest investment we will ever make, not only financially, but also personally. That’s why you shouldn’t approach a remodeling project lightly. Remodeling can easily be compared to an itch: most people don’t go to the doctor with the first itch. They investigate the possibilities and try to heal on their own, oftentimes not knowing exactly what is wrong. If things don’t improve, most people will call a doctor to discuss their symptoms. As a trained medical professional, the doctor asks you for details and eventually provides a diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis and eventual treatment of your home’s issues, like diagnosing a rash, should start with very basic questions and a professional. The following ABC’s can help you when you get the itch to remodel:
Ask Questions: Analyze your home situation and
write down your thoughts. What are your needs and wants? What about your home causes you frustration? Are there areas that are consistently in disarray because they lack dedicated space for your things? What fears do you have regarding the project? It’s best to bring in professionals to help you come up with solutions. They are trained to do so and can help you through the process.
6
B
udget: Know your limits. Be ready to communicate a budget to your team of professionals. A reputable contractor will use this important detail to help guide project scope and provide you with a realistic initial proposal. Designers and contractors need to know these important details to help provide the best design possible. But try to be flexible. Remember, you didn’t start remodeling just to spend money. You are doing this for the “A” reasons.
Choose Your Team: This is equally important as
the first two steps. Naturally, you will want to do a standard reference check to ensure all of the basic needs are met. You want to be confident that you are hiring a design-build team that is committed to delivering on the A’s, meeting the B and exceeding your expectations in the process. When you start getting the itch to remodel, these ABCs will help you avoid making any rash decisions. Keeping your list of the A’s and constantly referencing it will ensure a positive outcome and a quality product for your investment. Remember, it's best to call in the professionals from the start. Be practical with your remodeling budget and hire the design-build team who you trust is capable of addressing the reasons you got the itch in the first place.

Superhuman Ways to Grow and Protect Your Brain (You Didn’t Know About)
You are born with only one amazing brain and even though medical technology is advancing exponentially, we still cannot do a brain transplant. It is imperative to take good care of your brain from an early age, so that it will take care of you as you age. The brain has many enemies, substances that act like brain kryptonite. Examples include alcohol, tobacco, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, poor nutrition, lack of oxygen (emphysema), neurotoxins (aspartame), sugar and MSG. Our brain also demands constant stimulation: “Use it or Lose it” is true in all aspects of our brain’s systems. Thankfully, our brain has the amazing capacity to recover and repair its own function when it gets injured with a process called Neuroplasticity where our brain creates its own formula to grow and repair itself called Brain-derived neurotrophic factor or BDNF. 10
Here are 10 scientifically researched ways to boost production of BDNF and drive neuroplasticity:
1
Physical Activity
Researchers have studied the effects of exercise on the brain and found it was never too late to start with activities to help our brain. They recommend activities or aerobic exercise for at least 20-30 minutes daily, as well as strength and balance training three times a week to regain balance and prevent falls. Here is a quick home test: Stand on one leg first with your eyes open, then with your eyes closed. You should be balance for 20-30 seconds if you don’t have significant hip, knee or ankle problems.
2
By Dr. Jan Venter
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 plays a key role in the metabolism of every cell. It is important for memory, mood, sleep, energy, vibration and balance. B12 is the largest and most complicated vitamin in our bodies. While food provides normal daily intake of B12, many of us have trouble absorbing it after age 50 due to lack of stomach acid attributable to stress, alcohol, food sensitivities and antacids (specifically H2 blockers or Proton Pump Inhibitors). Drugs can be chemical thieves of B12, especially Metformin, an oral anti-diabetic drug. Vegetarians or Vegans, also require extra B12 supplementation. B12 insufficiency may result in poor balance, numbness, tingling and burning of the feet or hands. Chronic lack of B12 may even lead to permanent nerve damage. June 2015
Methylcobalamin B12 1000 µg is a recommended daily B12 supplement. Some patients should check with their healthcare practitioner if they require extra digestive enzymes to increase absorption or B12 injections due to inability to absorb the tablets. Your healthcare provider can check your vibration and fasting Homocysteine level, which can be correlated to lower B12 levels.
3
Omega-3 Polyunsaturated fats (PUFA)
Research has shown BDNF can be increased by consuming Omega-3 Poly-unsaturated fats like wild salmon, mackerel, herring, avocado, chia seed, flax seed, walnuts, olive oil or Omega-3 supplements. Adding ½ - 1 tablespoon of Organic Coconut Oil twice daily to your meals can be neuroprotective - helping protect your brain against dementia, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative disease.
4
8
5
9
6
10
Lion’s Mane
Studies show that Lion’s Mane Mushroom increases BDNF. Some studies have shown that it can help improve cognitive function in patients with dementia. 1000mg three times daily is recommended.
Flavonoids
Flavonoids like Green Tea, L-Theanine, dark chocolate, Gingko Biloba and Resveratrol (found in Pinor Noir) have been shown to raise BDNF levels. A small square of dark chocolate at bedtime is a good way to raise BDNF levels.
Melatonin
Taking 3mg of Melatonin at bedtime boost the brain’s BDNF production. Switch off unnatural light (TVs, Tablets, Phones and E-readers) after 9pm as it inhibits natural Melatonin production.
7
Green Odour
Green odours, specifically volatile oils produced by plants, increase our production of BDNF. Taking a walk in our beautiful forests can actually help your brain!
Curcumin
Turmeric (yellow spice) contains curcumin, which increases BDNF, and a remarkable molecule called Nrf2. 1000mg curcumin daily provides optimal protection.
Yoga and Mindfulness based Meditation
Yoga and mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques have been shown to increase BDNF production. Thankfully Vancouver has an abundance of Yoga options.
Music
Music also stimulates BDNF production. Listen to the classics, especially Mozart and Beethoven, learn to sing, or play a musical instrument like piano, guitar or drums.

SURPRISING FACTS About Organic Lawn Care By Bart Cunningham
• The Secret’s in the Soil
The way to a successful organic lawn is found in the soil. Properly-aged compost produces a rich supply of beneficial microbes that nourishes the turf and helps it to resist disease. There are essentially two methods for releasing these microorganisms into the turf. The best way is to install several inches of compost into the soil preparation before installing sod or planting seed. The alternative is to apply the compost directly on the existing lawn. When properly applied, the beneficial microbes in organic compost will naturally improve the turf.
• Fast Food or Healthy Diet
Chemical fertilizers supply an “empty” food directly to the grass. This is similar to the “empty” calories we receive when we eat refined sugar. Microbes, on the other hand, provide complete nutrition for the turf. They decompose dead plants, combine nitrogen and carbon to reduce loss of nutrients, reduce disease, develop soil structure, maintain proper pH levels, decompose thatch, and regulate nitrogen supplies essential to keeping the grass healthy.
• Deep Water
When we maintain a shallow, frequent watering schedule, we encourage the above soil runners to weave a thick mat called “thatch” which prevents water and air from reaching the soil. Since the roots remain in the top inch or two of soil, a hot day will dry out the turf, leaving brown spots and dry soil. However, when we have a deep, infrequent watering schedule, the roots are encouraged to drive deeper and spread underground rather than toward the surface. It should also be mentioned that watering in the morning (4am-8am) is best. Watering in the evening encourages fungus disease, so avoid having moisture on grass after dark.
3272 Main St. Vancouver, BC
• Mow Higher
“If I mow short, then it will be longer before I have to mow again.” This idea seems to make sense, but the truth is, your lawn needs those grass blades to photosynthesize (convert sunlight into sugar) in order to feed the roots. When the grass is cut short, it must hurry to make more blades to photosynthesize in order to feed those roots. Therefore, it grows fast, using its stored sugar, which weakens the plant. Taller grass is healthier, with richer color, and it can use the stored sugar to produce rhizomes (more grass plants), which thickens the turf and outgrows the weeds. In short, mowing higher provides: • More shade to the soil, resulting in less need for watering • Deeper roots, which leads to less watering • Thicker turf, which leads to fewer weeds Neighbours of Kerrisdale

John Teti Recommends Langara Lodge’s Chef, Dave Bond’s
SALMON MARINADE
Suggested Drink Pairings for this Months Recipe from our friends Ben and Steve at West Coast LC - 5503 West Blvd.
INGREDIENTS
Ben’s suggested beer pairing for the marinated salmon is Fat Tire Amber Ale from New Belgium Brewing in Ft. Collins, Colorado. It’s a great barbecue beer that won’t overpower the dish. It has a character that pairs well with grilled meats and veggies. A touch of malty sweetness that balances out heat and a moderate hop flavour offers great balance with the citrusy-sweet and chili component of the marinade. A great introduction to craft beer for those unsure of where to begin. While drinking out of the bottle is orthodox at a summer barbecue, pouring this bad-boy into a glass will give the drinker the optimal flavour experience. For wine, Steve thinks the wonderful thing about salmon is you can satisfy everyone’s tastes by offering a red or white wine pairing. The bright red fruits , earthiness and hint of pepper in the Flor de Campo Pinot Noir from the California will match the sweet and salty in the marinade as well as the smokiness from the barbeque. The Pentage Sauvignon Blanc/ Semillon from the Okanagan offers flavours of citrus and tropical fruits to dance with the basil and cilantro with crisp acidity and great mouth feel to balance the sweetness of the maple syrup and the richness of the salmon. Whatever you choose, Salmon, Wine and Barbeque, how could you go wrong?
14
• 1 cup light soy sauce • 1 cup dark soy sauce • 10 oranges (juice) • 1 cup Saki • 1/2 cup maple syrup • 2 tbsp sesame oil • 1 tbsp ginger
• 1 tbsp garlic • Lemon rind (8) • Cilantro (bunch) • Basil (1/4 cup) • Chili peppers (pinch) • Rice wine vinegar (splash) • Cumin (3 pinches)

This is easy to do and fun. If you want to get parenty, you can teach your kids about the color wheel and color combinations, but really, just have fun!
By: Ginny Draftz Step 1: Cover the inside of the lid with white glue, covering the bottom completely.
Items needed: • Plastic lids • White glue, plenty of it! • Liquid food coloring • Toothpicks • Hole punch • String
Step 2: Squeeze two drops of each color into the glue. Step 3: Slowly run a toothpick through the colors to create a beautiful pattern. Kids will want to keep doing this part; caution them not to mix too much or their sun catcher will be brown. Step 4: Let dry; this may take several days. As the glue and dye dry, colors will continue to blend and form; have your kids watch the transformation! Step 5: When the edges begin to pull away from the lid, gently peel the dried glue off. Step 6: Put a hole punch about an inch from the edge and put a string through it. Step 7: Hang in a window for all to see!
