ElizabethGurleyFlynnisoneofthemostimportantfiguresinthehistoryoftheUS left.Herparticipationin“theworking-classmovement,”asshecalledit,spanned nearlysixdecades,from1906to1964.InspiredbytheIrishfreedomstruggleand appalledbytheexploitationandgrindingpovertyshewitnessedaroundher,Flynn dedicatedherselftotheabolitionofcapitalismandtheliberationofworkers everywherefirstasaSocialist,thenaWobblysyndicalist,andfinallyaCommunist. Sheorganizedworkersintounions;ledstrikesinavarietyofindustries;supported anti-imperialistmovementsaroundtheglobe;galvanizedresistancetofascism; protesteddeportationofimmigrants;advocatedforprisonreform;championed laborandpoliticalrightsforwomen;foughtforcivilrightsforBlackAmericans; anddefendedcivillibertiesforlaboractivistsofallideologicalstripes.Itisno exaggerationtoclaimthatFlynnwasinvolvedinjustabouteverymajorcampaign oftheleftinthefirsttwothirdsofthetwentiethcentury.
Flynn’scommitmenttocivillibertieswasacharacteristicandenduringelementof heractivismandaforcethatshapedherlife.FromherWobblyyearstoher leadershipoftheCommunistPartyoftheUnitedStates,Flynnwasatrailblazerin theAmericancivillibertiesmovement,anardentandactivedefenderoftheright toholdandexpressone’sownpoliticalviewsandtoassociatewithlike-minded peopleinpeacefulpursuitofeconomic,social,andpoliticalchange.Ratherthan surrenderresponsibilityforcivillibertiestothecourts,shechampioned“popular constitutionalism,”theideathatordinarypeoplearecapableofdefiningand protectingtheirrightsthroughvigorousdebateoftheConstitutionandactive supervisionofthelegalsystem.AlthoughFlynn’scommitmenttocivilliberties neverwavered,themovementtowhichshecontributedsomuchabandonedher. In1940,theACLU,anorganizationthatshehelpedfound,expelledherfromits executiveboardsolelybecauseofhermembershipintheCommunistParty.An examinationofthehistoricalrecordshowsthatFlynn’scommitmenttocivil libertiesmatchedorevenexceededthatofothersinthemovement,including thoseontheACLUboardwhojudgedherandfoundherwanting.Itwasher politics,nothercommitmenttotheConstitution,whichbotheredhercriticsand ContributorBio
