DEBES SABER La temperatura oscila entre 7˚C y 24˚C (45˚F y 75˚F). El clima es tan variable que en un mismo día se pueden experimentar las diferentes estaciones del año, pues pasa del frío al calor en un instante. Debes estar listo para repentinos cielos nublados y fuertes lluvias.

Colombia es un estado social de derecho democrático, autónomo y participativo. El poder ejecutivo lo encabeza el Presidente, y el legislativo el Congreso de la República. El segundo cargo más importante del país es el del Alcalde Mayor de Bogotá.

En términos de seguridad Bogotá ha mejorado mucho con respecto al pasado, pero como en cualquier ciudad grande del mundo, debes estar consciente de tus objetos personales (celular, tarjetas, cartera, computador) en lugares públicos. Consulta nuestras recomendaciones en la página 222.

Las calles van de oriente a occidente y su numeración aumenta hacia el norte; las carreras van paralelas a las montañas de sur a norte y su numeración aumenta hacia el occidente. Las direcciones indican tanto la calle como la carrera; por ejemplo, Cra. 7 No. 28-66.

Colombia es uno de los países con más días festivos en el mundo: unos 18, incluyendo fiestas religiosas, cívicas y patrias. Muchos se mueven para el lunes siguiente y por eso verás en el calendario “puentes”, palabra que identifica los fines de semana con un lunes festivo.

Hay abundante transporte público en Bogotá, incluyendo los buses pequeños llamados colectivos, el sistema Transmilenio, y el Sistema Integrado de Transporte (SITP). Infórmate en sitp.gov.co.

La Candelaria tiene un hermoso centro histórico; la Zona Rosa es un lugar de compras, rumba y centros comerciales; la Zona G es un punto gastronómico por excelencia; el Parque de la 93 ofrece zonas verdes, bares y buena mesa; Usaquén posee una plaza central, cafés y shows artísticos en la calle. Bogotá está a 2.600 metros sobre el nivel del mar, así que la altura puede afectar a algunas personas por la insuficiencia de oxígeno. Mantente bien hidratado, no te excedas en el ejercicio y consulta a tu médico ante cualquier síntoma.

Por razones de seguridad es mejor no tomar un taxi en la calle. Solicítalos por teléfono o a través de una aplicación móvil. Los taxis deben tener un taxímetro y, además, tener a la vista una planilla con la identificación del conductor, el vehículo y la tabla de tarifas.

Para reducir la congestión de tráfico, existe una medida de restricción llamada Pico y Placa. El arreglo funciona de lunes a viernes, de 6 a 8:30 a. m. y de 3 a 7:30 p. m., y aplica según el último número de la placa (par o impar) y la fecha. Infórmate en picoyplaca.info.

BOGOTÁ BASICS Temperatures range from 7˚C to 24˚C (45˚F to 75˚F). The weather is so variable that it’s not unusual to experience four seasons within one day, going from hot to cold in an instant. Always be prepared for sudden cloudy skies and heavy rain.

Colombia is a constitutional republic that adheres to democratic, autonomous and participatory law. The executive branch is headed by the President and the legislative branch by Congress. The second most important office in the country is held by the Mayor of Bogotá.

Security in the city has improved considerably since the 1980s and ’90s. But — just like in any other big city — watch your personal belongings (mobile phone, bank cards, wallets, computers) carefully in public. Review “Security Tips” on page 222.

Streets (‘calles’) run east-west and street numbers increase toward the north, whereas avenues (‘carreras’) run north-south and increase in number toward the west. Addresses indicate both the street and the avenue, for example: Cra. 7 No. 28-66.

Colombia is one of the countries with the most national holidays in the world, with an average of 18 per year. These are often celebrated on or moved to a Monday, which is why you will notice a lot of long weekends (‘puentes’) on the calendar.

Bogota sits at 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) above sea level, so some people may feel the effects of decreased oxygen at this altitude. Stay hydrated, don’t over-exert yourself while exercising, and consult a doctor about any symptoms of altitude sickness.

For security reasons it is best not to hail a cab on the street. Call one by phone or through a smartphone app. All taxis are required to have a taximeter and a yellow chart visible that lists the name of the driver, license plate number and price rates.
