PLANNING for Savannah in the Round has ramped up with festival director James Dein recently briefing the event’s community and volunteer groups during a specially convened meeting at Mareeba Heritage Centre. The group heard Dein deliver the latest developments around on site safety, COVID

matters, volunteer inductions, artist information and the finer details about event parking and camping logistics. Planning for the September 29 – October 3 event is moving full steam ahead. “We’re expecting around 3000 people per day at the festival, we have people coming from all over regional

Queensland,” Dein told The Express. “The majority of others that have bought tickets from interstate but can’t travel because of COVID restrictions have happily decided to roll their tickets over to next year’s event, or alternatively, they’ve been issued refunds with absolutely no questions asked.

“Planning for the event continues, we’ve been thrown some curveballs but we continue to plan for a wonderful festival. “It’s also important to note our community groups and volunteers are paramount to the success of the event and we warmly welcome their contribution throughout the festival.”

Caravan residents given marching orders BY MICHAEL WARREN

DWELLING owners hopeful of being granted a last-minute reprieve or lengthy extension to permanently remain at a local caravan park have been dealt a heavy blow with Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) reiterating its position that residents must exit in the coming months. Those who have holiday homes at Yungaburra’s Lakeside Caravan Park and others who live in MDTA dwellings recently received revised Notice to Leave letters. Among them was one addressed to Jenny Sadar who just weeks ago made an impassioned deputation on behalf of fellow dwelling owners at a July TRC Ordinary Council meeting in Ravenshoe. Ms Sadar has lived and

occupied site 13 at Lakeside Caravan Park for the past ten years and had hoped Council had since had a change of mind. However, Ms Sadar was left devastated by the letter’s contents. Council’s August 27 letter to Miss Sadar noted “Whilst Council’s intention to require long-term tenants to vacate has not changed Council has considered your request for an extension of time,” the letter read. “In light of your particular circumstances Council is willing to grant an extension to vacate to 30 November 2021.” Ms Sadar had received previous correspondence instructing her to vacate the park by August 31 but had remained hopeful of being granted at least six months’ grace to reconsider her next move.

The short stay of execution comes despite Council drafting a motion at its Ravenshoe ordinary meeting that read that “Council authorise the CEO to approve extensions of time of up to 12 months to vacate premise” - a motion that was carried 6-1. Ms Sadar previously noted that the potential upheaval and relocation of her MDTA dwelling would cost upwards of $16000, money the resident said she simply doesn’t have. In total Ms Sadar said those responsible for 13 dwellings on the site have been asked to relocate from the park. They include five who own permanent dwellings and a further seven who have privately owned/ holiday homes at the facility. Just days ago TRC responded to The Express Newspaper’s

It is time for some results. It took four days before you even acknowledged on your website that there was an outage in the area.” A Telstra spokesperson told The Express the issue had appeared to be resolved by Monday morning, August 30. “Last week we replaced some cabling to the mobile antenna which has restored site performance to the level experienced prior to the fault condition,” the spokesperson explained. “As of this morning all indications were that the site was operating normally, but as a precaution we’ll have radio lines staff attending this week to do an additional site assessment. “Customers can report a fault by contacting us on 13 22 00.”

request for comment about the matter. “At the July Council meeting we agreed to consider requests for extensions of time to leave for up to 12 months,” TRC CEO Gary Rinehart told The Express. “We received a number of applications and these were assessed on a case-by-case basis, dependent on the applicants’ individual circumstances. “Some tenants reside at the park while others use the sites as holiday accommodation. “We considered it reasonable to grant a longer extension to tenants who need to find alternative accommodation. “We will continue to work with the residents and holidaymakers on their transition from the park.”

TABLELANDERS who experienced recent issues with mobile phone and internet connectivity outages have seen their circumstances improve over the past few days. Just days ago prior to the improvements Tablelanders in their droves had taken to social media to vent their frustrations with those based in Atherton, Tolga, Herberton, Yungaburra, Lake Eacham and surrounding townships having all experienced the performance problem that plagued the region for more than a week. Telstra had informed residents their planned “maintenance works” would be completed by 5.30am, August 28, however the telco revised that to 6am,10am, then a further time to be advised. At the time the ongoing matter had left residents and local business owners more than frustrated with Atherton Chamber of Commerce president Bree Hargreaves penning an online letter to Telstra in hopes to have the matter urgently addressed. “Telstra, I would like to introduce you to my frustrated community members, we have been without mobile phone/data service for at least a week,” Ms Hargreaves’ letter started. “We need an immediate response – surely you have a mobile tower or other solution you can bring to the

Info for single-use plastics A FREE breakfast information session is being held in Mareeba on Tuesday, September 14 to help inform businesses about the challenges the new singleuse plastics ban has brought. The ban was introduced last year and came into effect as of September 1, making the supply of single-use plastic straws, stirrers, plates, bowls, cutlery and expanded polystyrene takeaway food containers, banned. Gulf Savannah NRM has decided to hold free information sessions in Mareeba and Georgetown to help identify possible alternatives to singleuse plastics. Gulf Savannah NRM CEO Zoe Williams encouraged local business people to get involved and find out how they can replace the widely used utensils. “Changes like these will make a real difference for our fragile Gulf Country environments,” she said. The Mareeba session will be held next Tuesday September 14 with the Georgetown session set to be held the following day. To register for the sessions please contact Chelsea Smith on 4092 1088.

Tablelands Council Tourism campaign Touches the Top TABLELANDS Regional Council's (TRC) tourism campaign – Touch the Top, went live earlier this month and after three weeks in market has exceeded industry benchmarks for conversion, awareness, and engagement. “We are thrilled with how the campaign has launched,” TRC Mayor Rod Marti said. “To have such a high level of conversion and engagement already is a positive sign that the digital campaign is resonating with our target audiences.” Touch the Top has been designed to increase awareness and consideration of the Atherton Tablelands as a destination to 'top off your trip' when holidaying in the region or for those in Townsville, Cairns, and surrounds to consider taking a short break and discover the area. Leveraging the core experience pillars of nature and adventure, the campaign was developed following a

rigorous consultation process that involved industry groups, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, local news outlets, local community, and tourism business operators. ‘The collaborative approach C7EVEN, our destination marketing provider, took to help inform and develop the campaign has helped to ensure its success, and we would like to thank all those who met with us, attended our workshops and events, and sent feedback,” Mayor Marti said. ‘We are proud to be showcasing our wonderful region, supporting our local tourism operators, and we look forward to seeing what the remainder of the campaign generates.” C7EVEN Director Sara Crowe is delighted with the early campaign results. “We are proud to partner with Tablelands Regional Council on this project, and to see the extraordinary response

it is having in the market,” Ms Crowe said. “We have unashamedly targeted audiences that present the best potential for travel outside of peak periods and yield for the region's business and tourism operators with this campaign. “As the campaign grows, we are eager to continue the positive trajectory with an increased focus on local insights of the real, rich, and unique experiences the Tablelands has to offer.” The Touch the Top digital campaign will be in the market from August to October 2021, with the traditional media element public in September 2021. So far, the campaign is exceeding industry benchmarks in terms of conversion rate, level of online awareness, and click-throughs to the TRC, Queensland Parks and Forests, and National Trust websites. ONE of Atherton’s biggest community support organisations Better Together is looking for compassionate and like-minded individuals to join their board. Initially know as the Atherton Neighborhood Centre when it was founded in 1986, Better Together provides services such as the Aged Care Standards and Human Services Quality Standards. While they continue to provide these services Better Together has also moved to include home maintenance and modifications to the elderly, counselling and psychological services to families, young people and anyone with issues surrounding alcohol and

other drugs. CEO of Better Together, John Russell said that the wide range of services they currently offer is all thanks to the boards of management. “Better Together’s boards have been key drivers in providing new and different approaches to solving community issues,” he said. “We really encourage people from different professions and experiences to consider Board membership. “Different perspectives inform and enrich our open discussions, which in turn, help in generating creative and clever community solutions.” President of the Board of Management, Alan Hogg

said that having a position on the board gives you a key role in shaping the community agenda. “It’s an opportunity for an individual to speak up and advocate for the beautiful area we live in and actually do something constructive for the issues that impact us a community,” he said. “If you identify a gap in services, or better ways of making the Tablelands better, being a board member gives you a constructive way of building that vision. “By adding your voice and vision to the community agenda, we really are better together.” For more information email info@bettertogether. com.au

Future of triathlon unclear BY MICHAEL WARREN

TRC voted to withdraw their financial support of the Yungaburra Triathlon.

THE future of the Yungaburra triathlon remains clouded after Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) agreed to withdraw its financial support of the iconic local event. TRC did however move to confirm it does intend to assist the community in identifying a “sustainable event model for the future”. The discussion about its future started normally enough with the Officer recommending a motion to support the continuation of the Yungaburra triathlon and to endorse a budget adjustment of $30,000 for the 20-21 financial year to engage an events manager to run the event. However in a surprise move Cr Cardew, during discussion said the time for Council’s support of the Yungaburra triathlon “has come and gone” and that “we’re flogging a dead horse” by continuing to inject funds into the event to keep it afloat. Instead Mr Cardew immediately tabled a new motion “that Council does not support funding the continuation of the Yungaburra triathlon”. The motion, seconded by Cr Hodge, continued to be debated before the new motion was carried 5-2, leaving the planning of next year’s event up in the air.

Meantime, Council carried a 6-1 vote to appoint temporary contracted managers at Lakeside Motor Inn and Caravan Park from September. The decision though wasn’t without controversy, when, during discussion Cr Cardew recommended to close the park altogether, but to continue the garden and open spaces upkeep. In response Cr Bilney said he was against any potential closure of the park while Cr Wilkes said Council faced serious “reputational damage” if any move was made by TRC to shut the gates at the Caravan Park. Lastly, those invested in the future of Yungaburra Memorial Hall now face a clear “use it or lose it” scenario with clear guidelines in place to determine the aging facility’s ongoing future. Under the officer’s recommendation Council will use the following assessment parameters “evidence of multiple ongoing periodic (weekly) bookings and multiple bookings per month, for uses that cannot be provided to the same standard of service or better in other Council or privately owned facilities located within Yungaburra.” In other words the hall needs to be consistently utilized or it faces a different future.

Proposed tenancy laws to assist renters

A LOCAL housing expert believes proposed new tenancy laws will provide renters with added security and protection as they look to remain in long-term housing arrangements. In recent times the State Government’s Community support and Services Committee rubber stamped proposed new tenancy laws which will provide renters with more clarity and increased rights around rental agreements. “Regarding the change of tenancy laws in particular – some of the laws being put into place are actually going to protect the tenant more so,” Mareeba Community Housing Company general manager Patricia Goldfinch explained. “Previously you could give a

tenant a notice to leave (once the lease has finished) and provide no reason as to why the tenant has to vacate the property. “What the proposed changes will do is now ensure owners must supply a reason or grounds as to why the tenant(s) have to vacate upon the lease agreement finishing. For example, that notice to leave may be that the owners’ wish to sell, or simply move back into the property. “Either way there will be less of a focus on ticking ‘no grounds’ and more so clear transparency around what the reason was for the owners wanting the tenants to vacate.” Despite the positive development a tenant advocacy organisation suggested more can still be done to assist those who

find themselves in the rental market. “Every day we speak to hundreds of Queensland tenants worried about fast-rising rents, lack of property availability, inadequate maintenance to their home and the increased risk of being evicted,” Tenants Queensland CE0 Penny Carr said. “Parliament is considering its proposed new laws and we are running out of time to get our rental laws right. “This is about creating stability for Queensland’s 1.8 million renters and giving families the protection they need to be safe and secure in their homes.”

Dam rescue mission preserves Irvinebank tin mining history A RESORATION project has preserved a delicate heritage-listed piece of Far North Queensland’s colourful tin mining history. Since late last year, local contractors have been carefully repairing the 135-year-old Loudoun Weir at Irvinebank on the Atherton Tablelands, supporting seven direct jobs in the process. The operation involved a painstaking mix of a CCTV camera, 20 wheely bins worth of concrete and a hunt for just the

right type of tree, with the guidance of locals. Resources Minister Scott Stewart said the finished product was a great example of his Department of Resources’ often-unseen work protecting the state’s heritage. “The first European tin, copper and gold discoveries in the 19th century have left Queensland towns like Irvinebank, Gympie and Charters Towers with a lasting historical tourism legacy,” Mr Stewart said.

“Thanks to decades of advances in environmental and engineering science, we can now maintain that legacy and keep the surrounding communities and natural environment safe.” The original timber Loudoun Weir was built in 1885 as part of the Vulcan tin mine complex, with the mill and treatment works on its foreshore. The weir was upgraded to concrete in 2006, but retained the original timber in the weir’s façade.

The first leak was spotted in a 2017 routine inspection and an incoming water entry point was sealed off as a temporary measure. The permanent seal job started in December 2020 with a significant void found in the weir wall. With the help of a CCTV cable, departmental staff established that five cubic metres – or 20 wheely bins – worth of concrete would fill the void and stop the leak. Once the dam stopped over-

flowing mid-year, six logs in the heritage-listed weir façade also had to be replaced, requiring input from locals on like-for-like timber – not to mention the challenge of swapping in 40 metres of logs with heavy machinery on a tight worksite. Irvinebank Progress Association president Robyne Perkes said the department’s work was “a godsend”. “It has saved our dam, which is a significant part of the history of our town and plays a big role in tourism for us,” she said. “John Moffat built that dam

to start the Loudoun Mill and Irvinebank itself. “The town is very appreciative of the work that was done to seal the dam again and also retain the heritage value of the timber logs in the dam wall. “We are really happy with the work of the department, and the whole town thanks them for maintaining such an important part of our community.” Loudoun Weir is one of 21 non-commercial dams and weirs maintained by the Department of Resources.

Putting the freeze on ice THE Australian Anti Ice Campaign (AAIC), with support from local business, Hansen Ford and Mareeba Toyota, are holding a series of Anti Ice Workshops at Mareeba High School, Saint Stephens Catholic College and Dimbulah High School between September 10 and 14. Local attractions showcased in Discover Perfect campaign THE people and personalities of the Atherton Tablelands feature in a series of new videos encouraging self-drive and flydrive visitors to experience the region’s heritage charm, outstanding natural beauty, foodie and cultural attractions. From innovative trail blazers in the gourmet and bush tucker food industries to Indigenous cultural heritage, pioneer history and wildlife interpreters to nature loving adventurers, each gives a unique insight into why the Atherton Tablelands is such a special place and why people should visit. The two-to-three minute videos are part of the six-month ‘Discover Perfect’ campaign, highlighting the Atherton Tablelands and its hero experiences. Stars’ tell their unique stories amid naturally beautiful environments, from the rainforest and waterfalls of the southern Tablelands through to the open forest and crystal waters of Davies Creek near Mareeba and beyond to the sculptured savannah landscapes. Full of warmth and wonder, the compact works were created by Tanya Snelling for Tourism Atherton Tablelands, to centre around the organisation’s themed trails map booklet, published in the trademark Discover Magazine. Tourism Atherton Tablelands chair Eddy Nye said the videos aimed to show just how special the people of the Atherton Tablelands were and to shine the spotlight on some of those in the industry. “The Atherton Tablelands is a special place and that is reflected by those who live here. They are the real stars and the perfect choice to promote the perfect experiences we have here,” Mr Nye said. Those featured include Frank Gallo from Gallo Dairyland, famous for its cheese and

chocolate, and Geraldine Maguire from Rainforest Bounty (Food Trail), Darryl Cooper from the Historic Village Herberton (History Trail), Willie Brim from Buluwai Country (Cultural Heritage Trail), hiker and adventurer Michael Warren (Great Outdoors Trail), and Alan Gillanders (Wildlife Trail). Mr Gillanders has operated Alan’s Wildlife Tours, a natural history tour specialising in birds and mammals, for more than 20 years. “It is a real delight when somebody has wanted to see something for a long time and we manage to give them a good view of it. They just light up and, in some cases, they tear up,” Mr Gillanders said. Buluwai Cultural Custodian Willie Brim is proud to share stories and the wonders of the savannah and rainforest, including ancient rock art of his country. “Keeping the culture alive and sharing stories is very important - it helps people really understand the way we look at country and the way we look at life in general,” he said. For Geraldine McGuire, the destruction of thousands of acres of prime rainforest in Indonesia was so devastating that on her return home to Australia, together with her husband they purchased an old farm and began replanting rainforest together with tropical fruit trees. Today, Rainforest Bounty is known for its innovative and award-winning tropical fruit products and cooking school. “We want to leave a legacy of a whole new industry that’s available for the Atherton Tablelands that is based on regenerative farming, regenerating soil health and promoting diversity,” Ms McGuire said. Council to investigate drain concerns BY MICHAEL WARREN TABLELANDS Regional Council has moved to resolve a potentially serious accident from occurring after a dangerous hazard inside an Atherton drain was brought to their attention by a local resident along with Atherton Chamber of Commerce president Bree Hargreaves. Atherton’s Kathy Kilpatrick raised the matter on social media and said her 92-yearold father, who is visually impaired previously wrote to TRC regarding his personal concerns about the drain in Mcconaghie St. Ms Kilpatrick’s father, who uses a gopher, wanted Council to consider erecting a fence or barrier in front of the drain so no one walking or travelling past would suffer a fall or be impaled on the prongs. Council initially called to tell her father the

drains weren’t a matter for concern, but just days ago Council contacted Ms Kilpatrick to inform her they were aware of the problem and issued her with a reference number. Over the past few days The Express understands TRC has relocated the steel covers to where they should be while Council’s engineering team continues to look at how to improve general safety next to the road and alongside of the drain. “We appreciate the community bringing their concerns and requests for service to our attention,” General Manager for Infrastructure and Planning, Mark Vis told The Express. “We are aware of the situation regarding the drain on Mcconaghie Street and will be investigating further. “We’ll contact everyone who has been in touch once a decision has been made.”

MP’s call for Kennedy Highway to be added to the National Land Transport Network KENNEDY MP Bob Katter has written to the Federal Transport Minister requesting that the Kennedy Highway from Cairns to the Atherton Tablelands be added to the National Land Transport Network, which would help get more federal assistance for the route. Mr Katter and State Member for Hill, Shane Knuth, have been advocating for a new section of the Kennedy Highway to be built from Davies Creek to the Cairns CBD, commonly known as the Bridle Track or Kuranda

Bypass. Currently, motorists are waiting up to 20 minutes at Kuranda’s ailing Barron River Bridge which is permanently down to one lane. “The Kennedy Highway is vital to supporting primary and secondary industries on the Atherton Tablelands and Cape communities of North Queensland,” Mr Katter wrote to the Minister. “It is a vital connecting route of national significance due to its essential link between

industry and market. I seek your assistance to classify this road appropriately. “It has been previously suggested that the Kennedy Highway be considered a part of the National Land Transport Network and I would ask for your assistance in gaining that determination. “I’m aware that the Network was reviewed and updated on 1 July 2020 to ensure it included nationally significant major road and rail links. I strongly believe that this route

meets the criteria of the review and warrants addition to the network.” As the Network is determined by the Minister, I formally seek your consideration to classify the Kennedy Highway as a significant road of the National Land Transport Network.” Member for Hill, Shane Knuth said it was evident that there were massive issues with the current Mareeba to Cairns road with a high number of accidents and road closures that increases during the wet season.

“If the Federal Government ruled the Kennedy Highway a road of national significance and a part of the National Land Transport Network, it would take the burden off the State who could focus on other statecontrolled roads,” he said. “This would open the way for federal funding and for a new fast-tracked highway from the Tablelands to Cairns that will take 35 minutes off the journey without delays and provide a massive economic boost to the region.”

Kool dogs will feature at upcoming stockdog herding workshops in Mareeba.

Kool dogs to feature at local workshops BY MICHAEL WARREN

A DIFFERENT type of working dog that’s Kool by name and nature will get its time to shine during upcoming workshops next month in Mareeba. This will be the 10th year the Koolie Club has held its Stockdog herding workshops locally. Well-known trainer Tony Cock, who manages a station near Theodore in Central Queensland will again run the workshops, which will be conducted from September 1420 at the Mareeba Pony Club.

“The aim of these workshops is to help teach people and their dogs how to work stock with their working breed dogs,” event spokesperson Kylie Wilson told The Express. “The event attracts a diverse group of participants from near and far. “We have many local property owners, station owners and staff from the Cape and Western Queensland and also many interstate participants. “Our event also attracts many suburban herding enthusiasts that want to broaden their horizons and try a new hobby

with their best friend.” The spokesperson said the workshops also have another purpose. “The Koolie is one of the lesser known breeds of Australian Working dogs,” Ms Wilson explained. “We are trying to bring this fantastic breed out of the shadows and show their versatility as a working dog. “Koolies make great assets to a working team, as they have great drive and are always looking to please.” For more information phone Jackie Hunter on 0488 968 470.

Free breast screens

RESIDENTS of Chillagoe and Dimbulah will be able to benefit from some free health services as a breast screening service is set to make the trip through the towns. It was identified that one in seven women in Australia will develop breast cancer at some stage during their lifetime. A free breast screening service such as this is one of the most common and effective ways to identify breast cancer in its earlier stages.

BreastScreen Queensland Cairns Service will be visiting Dimbulah Primary Health Centre from 8-15 September, followed by the Chillagoe Primary Health Centre from 1617 September, in their new truck Kukuwam. Health Promotion Officer for the service Sandra Peut said that this was the first time that Kukuwam (meaning hibiscus in the Torres Strait Creole language), was visiting the area. “Regular two-yearly

screening at BreastScreen Queensland offers peace of mind, and our dedicated female staff will set your mind at ease and answer any questions you may have,” she said. “A breast screen can detect small abnormal changes, often before they can be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor. “Early detection can save your life, providing the best chance of effective treatment, increased survival, and improved quality of life.”

Newly gazetted Wenlock River crossing one of most dangerous tracks on Cape York COOK Shire Council could have left itself out on a limb after Council facilitated the gazettal of a new tourist road through the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve on Bertie Haugh station, north-east of Weipa. The Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve is owned and managed by Australia Zoo. The crocodile-infested Wenlock River runs through the 320,000 acre reserve where Irwin’s Coolibah research station is located. The controversial new track has been the talk of Weipa for

months after the zoo and the station lessees complained about tourists trying to access the unmade track traversing some of the most hostile and remote countryside on Cape York Peninsula. Property lessee John Witherspoon, a veteran Peninsula cattle producer has condemned the route taken by the shire council and a group of Weipa mine workers who trailblazed a track using GPS technology. Mr Witherspoon said the track had to cross several creeks and essentially goes through

the middle of the property making its biosecurity program inoperable. “The track that was gazetted and signed off by the council is not the route the zoo representatives and I agreed to at a meeting several years ago,” Mr Witherspoon said. “The agreed track which followed the property’s northern boundary crossed the Wenlock at Stone’s Crossing but went north using an established vehicle crossing on Bertie Haugh Creek following the northern boundary to Bramwell tourist resort.

“Stone’s Crossing near the Coolibah camp is one of the most dangerous river crossings on Cape York and should not be used by southern or overseas tourists who have no idea about local conditions or the large number of crocodiles that have been recently recorded going through the crossing. “The crossing is influenced by the tide and it can be deep making a safe crossing impossible. There are large holes in the river bed and a car can easily get stuck in them. “If a tourist gets stuck, just

Bertie Haugh Station lessee Mr John Witherspoon (in rear of vehicle) inspects Stones Crossing on the croc-infested Wenlock River which he says is one of the most dangerous tidal river crossings on Cape York. The crossing was gazetted in 2020 and made a part of the new road.

as locals can, then a tourist with kids or elderly passengers getting out of the car in waistdeep water become easy bait for crocs and sharks as well as risking getting washed away and drowned. “There is no phone service or help available in this remote area. “It is irresponsible for Weipa tourist operators to direct unwary drivers to take this fourwheel drive route when it is just a track through the trees that is barely trafficable with quad bikes.” Mr Witherspoon said he was concerned about fences being cut that had been erected long before the road’s gazettal, potential stock theft and fires which could be started by tourists, who had little idea about cattle property management and the danger of fires. Mr Witherspoon said Cook Shire Council has not addressed the potential liability it could be exposed to when tourists have an accident on this bush track. Cook Shire Director of Infrastructure David Klye apologised for station fences being cut but shifted the responsibility for biosecurity

issues such as weeds and stock theft onto the state government. “I am sure that you are aware that the state government has enacted legislation with respect to both these issues, however, there are very limited resources for surveillance and enforcement,” Mr Klye said in a letter to Mr Witherspoon. “I am sorry that your fences were cut. The issue of fences was discussed with the person arranging the travel prior to their travel. My advice to the party was that Council has no record of the issuing of any permits for the erection and maintenance of any fences along the road reserve. “I did explain that in such a remote area that it may be possible that some fences could exist and that they should repair any fences that they needed to cut to complete their traverse. “I trust that this is the case, I will be disappointed if the fences were left down. “The original route agreed to by Australia Zoo and Mr Witherspoon has been discussed with local native title holders and will be presented to state government authorities as an alternative the newly blazed track.”

New weighbridge for Kuranda transfer station A NEW weighbridge and gatehouse are set to be installed at the Kuranda Transfer Station in coming weeks with works now nearing completion. The works initially started in August with a suspected completion sometime in later October. The new weighbridge will change how people enter and exit the site, during the construction period people have been asked to be mindful of the works and gatehouse workers. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin said that the upgrade was identified because of council’s Waste Management Services Strategy. “Council aims for a better

way of managing waste at its sites, by harnessing the potential value of resources that have traditionally been discarded,” she said. “Council has endorsed strategic priorities which will guide our transition to a more circular economy, reduce the amount of waste disposed of to landfill, and provide a more sustainable source of end-oflife products and materials. “Mareeba Shire Council remains committed to reducing waste to landfill by increasing recycling opportunities, promoting reuse of organic waste, reducing illegal dumping and supporting sustainable practices.”

Western women access wellness day BY SALLY TURLEY A DESIRE to infuse more of a culture of beauty into the west through "fun, fashion and glamour," led Mt Garnet's new Chaplain, Sharon Karsikas to present a 'Women's Wellness' day in Mt Garnet last Saturday. The event which focused on empowering women through knowledge about services and opportunities within their community and increasing their self-confidence by enabling them to present themselves at their best every day, attracted 32 participants from around north Queensland . As a former personal stylist and beautician, Ms Karsikas used her own collection of vintage and pre-loved clothing to show women how to dress for their body shape and explore a variety of looks to build their self-esteem and help them take that first step towards pursuing their dreams. Ms Karsikas told participants that it was "important to work

with what you have got" and that it was "never too late to achieve your life goals". She said her aim was to "build people up, help them see the possibilities and then help create an opening for them." The positive response from the wellness day already has her planning her next event – a two day women's 'Shine' workshop to be held in Mt Garnet on the 11th and 12th of September. Shine is a solution focused personal development program for all ages and includes sessions on value, identity and self worth, as well as nutrition and fitness and dressing to look your best. During her 10 years as a chaplain with Scripture Union, Ms Karsikas has presented Shine workshops in Mt Molloy and Tully, designed school programs for students in Weipa and Townsville, worked with rural women on properties and was a founding member of the thriving Cassowary Coast Business Women's Network.

Models, Margaret Chandler, Taleah O'Brien and Dakota Dumford rock the western wear look for the audience.

Elsa Lim and Donna Holland were up from Cairns visiting friends. Owner of the local "Rumours and Whispers" cafe, Val Wells (R) chats with Monica Moore during a smoko break.

Mt Garnet girls Lyn Arnett and Irene Dodds had a lovely day at the workshop.

Mt Garnet CWA members, president, Cathy Walker, Secretary, Judy Hewlett and Judith DeZwart catered on the day. The group have been keeping to keep their branch, which began in 1926, alive into the future. They are down to 5 members, all in their 60's, 70's and 80's, and they would love to welcome new people into their club.

The choir delivered a beautiful rendition of "How Great Thou Art" on the day.

Larissa Smith, Peggy Lee, Deborah Redfern and Margaret Chandler glammed it up on the catwalk.

Cattle safe entry grids make biking easier

Davies Creek Mountain Bike Park now has a grid installed as an entryway, letting bikes in and out while keeping the neighbouring cattle in.

MAREEBA Mountain Goats Inc. has put their innovative minds to the test, creating an entry point for mountain bikes to go in without letting cattle out at the Davies Creek Mountain Bike Track. The newly installed grid has made it easier for mountain bikers utilising the popular track to get in without the hassle of climbing over the gates. President of Mareeba Mountain Goats Inc. Steven Soda said the new entrance will benefit mountain bikers as the park’s popularity continues to increase. “Over time the park became

more popular, we felt the need to improve the design so people didn't have to lift their bikes over the gate they already had,” she said. “We had a few members volunteer their time, we received a bit of funding and we had a few members of the club donate time to put it together. “We have put quite a bit of thought into it so it is safely utilised, especially for younger kids and their families.” This project was also funded by the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport, as a way to get the community back into sport after COVID.

Better connection for remote communities

RURAL and remote areas of Far North Queensland can look forward to bigger and better mobile coverage including residents of the Carpentaria Shire. including the construction of new mobile bae stations, satellite small cells and battery backup solutions. Telstra regional general manager Rachel Cliffe said it would vastly improve their existing 4G mobile coverage in the region. “They will provide improved connectivity for residents, farmers and tourists, and will be particularly important during natural disaster events like floods,” she said.

Waterwater recycling working NAIDOC for Douglas Shire residents Celebrations

at Mareeba High

ABORIGINAL and Torres Strait Islander culture was in the limelight at Mareeba State High School (MSHS) last Thursday with the school hosting its annual NAIDOC Day celebrations. The day saw Grade 10 students learning spear and boomerang throwing on the school oval in their third lesson, plus a sausage sizzle, painting and Defence Force talks during lunch. The afternoon consisted of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, sharing their culture and entertaining their peers through dance. Overall, the celebrations were a huge success, with hopes for it to carry on into the future.

Douglas Shire Council’s Wastewater Treatment Plant team members.

OVER 200 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of recycled water was used to irrigate and maintain the luscious farms and green of Douglas Shire Councils (DSC) golf courses and farmland in the last financial year. About 540ML of recycled water was repurposed in the 2020/21 financial year by DSC using their extensive wastewater treatment processes to remove waste from water, ensuring it can be safely reused or returned to the environment. 2037 wet tonnes of dewatered sludge was taken by contractors and used as organic fertilizer and soil conditioner across a range of farms in the shire. DSC Mayor Michael Kerr said the Mossman and Port Douglas Wastewater Treatment Plants played a vital role in everyday lives. The amount of work that

goes into handling your waste once it goes down the drain and how we then use it in practical ways is truly mind-boggling,” he said. “I would like to encourage the community to watch the educational videos on Council’s website to get an in-depth understanding of how the treatment plants work. “We know how important protecting our environment is and it is fantastic to see all the work that is done behind the scenes.” Wastewater comes from residences, local commercial and light industrial sites, such as clubs, caravan parks, restaurants, commercial laundries, oil company retail outlets and hospitals. However, it does not include roof water or surface runoff which many people use and recycle into drinking water.

Guest speaker Doug Hastie.

Students from Mareeba High performed cultural dances at the celebrations.

Cleaning up Herberton HERBERTON locals will be participating in the Great Northern Clean Up on September 12 as a way to make their small town more appealing to travellers and locals alike. Event organiser Tim Fisher said this event is very important for the town and anyone is welcome to come along. “We will meet at 8am outside the council building and we will decide where to clean up from there,” he said. “From there we will choose which street needs the most

cleaning up. “I think it's important that the town looks good and with the rubbish strung around everywhere and it doesn’t make the town look very good, especially to the people visiting at this time of the year.” Registrations will take place at the front of the old Council building on Grace Street from 8am, with participants being urged to wear enclosed shoes, gloves and a hat. Rubbish bags will also be provided.

New Netflix series to be filmed in FNQ THE Far North’s attraction as a screen production hot spot is ramping up with the latest ten-part drama series commissioned by streaming giant Netflix to be filmed in the region. Irreverent will be filmed in Mission Beach later this year with the beauty of the region featuring across US television screens. Netflix and NBCU will be co-commissioners on Irreverent, a series about an American crook hiding out in a small Australian reef community in Far North Queensland, posing as the new church

Reverend. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Netflix’s commission of Irreverent is a great example of Queensland-filmed content for the global market. “This is one of the three landmark Universal Studios Group productions lured by the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy in 2020,” the Premier said. “Securing these three productions is a critical part of Queensland’s economic recovery, contributing hundreds of millions to the local

economy and importantly creating thousands of local jobs.” Far North Queensland Screen Champion, Speaker of the Queensland Parliament and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt, welcomed the announcement and said Irreverent would commence filming at Mission Beach later in the year. “The Far North is an incredibly diverse backdrop for screen productions,” Mr Pitt said. “Having productions like Irreverent film here, not only boosts the local economy

and creates local jobs, but it shows off our spectacular region. “The natural beauty of Queensland’s Far North will be streamed into living rooms across the world., affirming the region’s status not only as a production paradise but also as a bucket-list destination for future travel.” Netflix Director of Content for ANZ Que Minh Luu said Queensland would be an important element of the drama. “We were drawn to Irreverent by its warmth, optimism and celebration of community with a uniquely Australian

sense of humour – like Northern Exposure in Far North Queensland,” Minh Luu said. “We’re thrilled to work with NBCUniversal International Studios and Matchbox on bringing this premium drama series to life for our ANZ Netflix members.” Screen Queensland CEO Kylie Munnich said that Far North Queensland is a unique production location, like nowhere else in the world and in high demand from both domestic and international productions. “The tropical north creates a tense and exotic at-

mosphere for drama, and the story of Irreverent, set in a small reef community, is a perfect fit for Mission Beach," she said. “This production, together with other recent dramas including The Steve Jaggi Company’s Dive Club filmed in Port Douglas, underscores the region’s expansion as a screen hub, with the new Screen Queensland Cairns studio set to be operational by early 2022.” Irreverent will screen exclusively on Netflix in Australia and New Zealand, and on Peacock in the U.S.

New bridge on the way Mossman’s sugarcane industry will now have an easier time carrying their tonnes of sugarcane to and from farms and the mill with the construction of a new bridge underway. Douglas Shire Council (DSC) finished building a new bypass at Anichs Bridge on Finlayvale Road to allow for the construction on the new bridge, upping

the load limit to 44 tonnes. The new bridge structure has been designed to withstand the battering it suffers from flooding, although it will do nothing to change the frequency of flooding. DSC Mayor Michael Keer said the increased load limit would improve safety at the crossing.

“The steel bridge girders and cross braces are corroded which impacts the ability to safely transport heavy equipment such as cane harvesters, tractors and haulage across the creek,” he said. “With cane harvesting completed in that area and a bypass in there, our crews can start closing the existing bridge and working on building a new one.” The piles for the new bridge have been ordered and are set to be delivered on site in early September with pile driving scheduled for mid-September.

A new bridge being built will allow for more secure delivery of sugarcane to the local Mossman Sugar Mill over the sugarcane season.

New chapter for mango hybrids

BIG steps are being made in the mango industry with three hybrids that were produced during the National Mango Breeding Program moving onto their next phase of commercial development. The three hybrids currently named NMBP-1201, NMBP4069 and NMBP-1243 are being grown by over 20 growers in orchards across the country, including Queensland. In 2015, Newmanco was identified to have the

Now the involved parties have agreed that the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) will take on the licensor role moving forward. “Newmanco fully supports the new project team and wishes them every success,” Newmanco’s Brett Kelly said. “The expertise and resources to be provided by DAF is fantastic news for those involved, such as the nurseries providing high health growing material, the growers nurturing their trees, and for mango lovers alike. “The new project team continues to bring these exciting varieties to market.” DAF General Manager Horticulture & Forestry Science Lynne Turner said that now with regions orchards maturing, the next phase of the project will continue. “Now that some regions

Telpara looks towards second annual sale TELPARA HILLS

BRANGUS + ULTRABLACK

THE NORTH’S BIGGEST BULL SALE YOUR LOCAL SOURCE FOR WORLD CLASS CATTLE

Stephen Pearce from Telpara Hills is looking forward to their upcoming bull and female auction sale next weekend.

With a reputation of providing the best beef genetics to both seedstock and commercial buyers, long time cattle breeders Telpara Hills is set to impress buyers from across the region and the country at their second annual bull and female sale next weekend. TELPARA Hills is set to return after the record-breaking success of their inaugural cattle auction in 2020. The leaders in beef genetics will host their second ever on farm sale on the Tablelands next Saturday, September 18. More than 120 cattle left their property during last year’s sale with a successful 100 percent clearance, selling 96 bulls and 35 Heifers. This year the sale will be bigger and better with 114 bulls and 36 heifers up for grabs with hopes to make a another clear sale for the second year in a row. Out of the near 300 buyers for last year’s sale only 76 were in person while the remaining 208 were registered online buyers.

Telpara Hills boasts an impressive line up of Brangus and Ultrablack bulls, so much so this this sale is one of the biggest of its kind in Queensland. Stephen Pearce of Telpara Hills said that they had some tremendous success from their first sale last year and are looking to do the same if not better, this year. “A lot of people have the misconception that you have to travel a long way to get the really good cattle,” he said. “When in reality we have one of the world’s best Brangus herds and its right here on the Tablelands. “The cattle industry is really thriving at the moment so we are very excited for the upcoming sale.”

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

After consistently dominating sale yards in Rockhampton and Roma, Telpara Hills found that most of their buyers were from the Tablelands. Hence they decided to host their sales on the land, inviting those who would usually travel hours to buy stock, now only having to drive a couple of minutes. Local buyers are encouraged to take advantage of this ersource in the region. Telpara Hills look forward to opening their gates to buyers in person and online next Saturday, September 18 at 157 Marnane Road, Tolga. For more information contact Stephen on 0439 532 132.

y a s r u o y e v a H LETTERS to theEDITOR EMAIL: editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au

NRL double standards need to stop TO the uninitiated, the more than “cosy” arrangement that appears to exist between the NRL and the State Labor government appears to be all aboard and kosher - or at the very least a series of snap decisions that have been “enforced” by the ravages of COVID-19 and keeping Queenslanders “safe”. However a bit of history and open eyed observations could prove otherwise. Let’s see . . .since 1908 when rugby league (often touted the “workers’ game”) came to Australia and the Sunshine State there has been more than a few casual liaisons between rugby league and Labor. Not so very long ago there were even two State Labor leaders of note, namely Nev Warburton and Ed Casey and a whole lot of other State pollies who have had a more than fair grounding and association with rugby league as they ascended the portals of State power. From intending Premiers to serving ministers including Treasurers, Labor and League stand out as long term firm “buddies”. Why, in recently times, we have seen former Tableland raised former Premier Peter “Teflon” Beattie leave politics and then become the head honcho of the NRL - even though, he could name only a few of the 16 NRL teams competing at the time of his appointment, and by all accounts of those who knew him at the time was a lot less than average as a league player when on the Tablelands. Go figure. In more recent times, we have seen former State Labor pollie and Minister Kate Jones become appointed an Australian Rugby League commissioner no less. This year, Premier Palaszczuk and her cronies paid the NRL a reported $8 million worth of tax payer funds to host just one - that’s ONE - game in the 2021 State of Origin trilogy in Townsville and recouped only $5 million in revenue at the State government funded brand spanking new purpose built league stadium.

That’s a loss of $3 million for just one game of footy, according to basic maths. Within the past 10 days or so, the wives and girlfriends of now Queensland based NRL teams have been allowed carte blanche entry to Queensland despite enforced border closures and “no go” stances that apply to anyone else who requires medical treatment in Brisbane, are fully COVID immunised Queensland residents and others who have attended critical family and medical events south of the border. This abundance of blatant, farcical State government double standards that apply to the NRL at the exclusion of others just has to STOP. Just like the NRL, the Palaszczuk government keeps shifting the goal posts in the handling of COVID pandemic, and a host of other relevant fields of public interest and benefit. Wise people once claimed it a folly to mix religion and politics. Take a look at Palaszczuk and her mob and you can plainly see the double standards that are virulent in State politics and SPORT - all to the exclusion of others it seems. Barry Simpson MAREEBA

Festival a highlight of our time in Mareeba CONGRATULATIONS to all involved in the Mareeba Multicultural Festival. My husband and I have been happily stranded in Mareeba for the past six weeks and the festival was definitely the highlight of our time here. I went thinking I would stay a couple of hours and ended up staying the whole day! The food stalls provided plenty of mouth-watering variety. Thank you to Albania for the best moussaka ever and the fruit salad from the Tongan stall was absolutely delicious! I’m sure the fare from all the other stalls was just as scrumptious. It was wonderful watching the various talented musical groups and

everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their time on the stage. By the time the day had finished I felt like I’d been on a trip around the world. I think the people of Mareeba should be so proud of this annual event and it really showcased, in the most positive way, what community is all about. Thank you again. Sue Burnett MAFFRA, VICTORIA

We want to hear from our State Member DEAR Miss Lui, Please advise if you have sent the resolution from the large public meeting as per the letter to the Tables Office for tabling in parliament on August 31 or if you intend to speak on it in the House. Ken Harley, Chairman Kuranda Range Bypass Road committee

More common sense needed THE current proliferation of medical propaganda, we are being subject to from all levels of government and all forms of mainstream media and social media, is undoubtedly, the biggest psychological operation ever undertaken in the history of the human race. It is all biased towards one thing and one thing only. To get us all vaccinated with a supposedly safe and effective vaccine to protect us from a supposedly dangerous and nasty bug called the ‘Sars2-Covid19 virus’. It is neither safe nor effective, as evidenced by the latest medical reports coming out of both Israel and Iceland. Two of the highest vaccinated countries in the world. Over 80% of the new hospitalizations, with the new ‘Delta’ strain, are with vaccinated people whom have had the double dose. More proof required? How about the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) in America. As of the 13th of August, 2021. There has been 13,068 deaths from all COVID

vaccines administered and 54,142 cases requiring hospital treatment. That number of deaths is greater than for all previous vaccines combined in the history of US Medical reporting since VAERS started in 1990. We are not being told the whole truth from our governments or from our media. Yet, we are now being told that our children, whom are the most precious in our community, now require a vaccine to protect them from a virus that does not even kill them! We need common sense. We do not need the unelected medical establishment, whom are paid off by the big pharmaceutical companies, running our lives, telling us what we can do with our bodies and now, what our children are meant to have injected into their bodies, without the proper medical trials being done! Trials, that normally take 10 years to complete, not 6 months. Whatever happened to common sense? Bill Schutz MAREEBA

Vaccine passports not the answer OUR current crop of politicians have contrived to terrify the public over an invisible virus. They’ve used this mass terror campaign to subvert our long-established system of governance and grab unprecedented power for a small group, now operating without supervision or checks and balances. That group is the “National Cabinet” and its acolytes, and the author of this disaster of governance is Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Whole volumes will one day be written describing his many abuses of the Westminster system. There is no mechanism to keep this unprecedented “National Cabinet” from running out of control, and so it has - as we have seen with the ongoing attacks on our freedom, which mirror those of domestic violence offenders. However, because this subversion of governance is being replicated in nations around the world, we must accept that it is driven by a central organisation, and that organisation is

the World Economic Forum. Locally, the WEF’s main agent within the federal government is Health Minister Greg Hunt. From his bio on his personal website: “Greg’s achievements include being named a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum...” Hunt’s parliamentary bio includes this: “Director of Strategy at the World Economic Forum, Geneva from 2000 to 2001.” What a convenient background for our ambitious federal health minister during a contrived “pandemic.” So, what’s bad about the WEF? The Transnational Institute has correctly observed that the WEF’s Great Reset is really a global coup d’état – a plan for multinational corporations to capture global governance. The reality we’re living 19 months into an outbreak of a “novel coronavirus,” which is only fatal to those who would have died of any flu that came around, informs us that the WEF’s preparation has been thorough and the Great Reset is well underway. Nobody voted for our Prime Minister and Premiers to subvert our system of governance, steal our rights and freedoms, and enact a globalist plan for a world government run by multinational corporations. As the WEF’s own website says, “governments will gain new technological powers to increase their control over populations, based on pervasive surveillance systems and the ability to control digital infrastructure.” And that is what the “vaccine passports” will achieve – a global digital system for tracking individuals and shaping their thoughts and behaviours, controlled by multinational corporations as personified by the Davos-class billionaires. No newspaper will print these thoughts because editors are controlled by the Davos-class, which makes it vital that journalists and backbench MPs understand this reality. If our hard-won freedoms are to be preserved we must all wake up, refuse to comply, and push back – and journalists and backbenchers are best placed to spearhead this fight. Peter Campion TOLGA

“The photo was taken at the Gentle Annie Lookout on McHugh Road just west of Millaa Millaa. This lookout offers amazing views to the valley below. Visiting this place can be met with many different weather challenges but each one is a unique experience in itself, especially at sunrise. The beautiful old tree, timber fence and concrete seat add ambiance to the photo. This was taken before the new picnic table was installed which although useful can impede a great view for a photographer. In saying that, I recommend that you take some time to visit this lookout.”

THANK YOU To ALL who knew her To ALL who worked with her To ALL who share her life To ALL the kind words, prayers and thoughts To Atherton Hospital staff To Guilfoyles Funeral Service for a wonderful send off She shared her love, her smile to all - a bright light has gone out. She will be forever loved. Michael McCaul & Family - Malanda.

My sincere thanks and gratitude to the people who came to my assistance when I fell and fractured my patella. A lot of traffic passed as I lay on the footpath in pain, none slowed down or came to my aid. Alan Harris came by on his bike and called the ambulance and gave me comfort until they arrived. To the paramedics Nathan and Al, the care shown to me and your work ethics are commendable. The team at ED Mareeba Hospital, your concern for my pain and comfort were outstanding. I look forward to a full recovery having had the best treatment anyone could ask for. ALLISON HODGON

Invitational held for Mareeba gymnastics

PAGE 38 The Express, Wednesday, September 8, 2021

THE Mareeba Gymnastics club held an invitational competition in recent weeks with nearly 200 athletes coming to compete over the two days of competition. 190 gymnastics from Cairns, Mossman and of course the Tablelands flocked to the Arthur Randolph Lane Gymnastics Centre to compete from levels one to six and ages 5 to 15 years old. Mareeba Gymnastics Club coaching director Kelly Tulloch was excited with how the weekend went and the quality of performances. “The Mareeba Invitational Competition went amazing,” she said. “Gymnasts displayed remarkable strength, flexibility and performance throughout their routines. “Some of these gymnasts will be travelling to Junior State Championships which is to be held on the Gold Coast in the first week of the school holidays.”

Malanda bullride set to return

Reshuffle for Allstars round IN the opening game of the night, past Mareeba basketball president, Mark Wuth, turned back the clock to bang down a barrage of three pointers as Steve Hogan got his share of put backs. Young Stanley (The Mustard) Bustard strutted into the stadium for the close of the first half looking miffed that he had not been selected for the main event. To make his feelings known he still managed to bag 17 points in the second half. What could have been for ‘The Mustard’ if only the Herberton Express was running to schedule. The Allstars Game had notable omissions in Thomson, Farley and Washington, but the contest lived up to the hype, 74 to 70 Green over Turtles (Black). For Green, the efforts were shared and well coached by Tyson Tatti. The score sheet reflected Zayd Myrteza as their

second highest scorer indicative of some clever accounting by Steve Hogan and Sep Aloia. For the losing team, Ryan Mawdsley bagged 22 points including a mammoth half-time buzzer beater from the door

mat of the score bench at the midcourt. Ricaydan Wason chipped in for 20 points with seemingly endless time going to the hoop but to be fair he was a little off from outside.

Annual Tennis tournament success THE Mareeba Tennis Club hosted their annual Mazda Mitsubishi tournament at the end of August with players from across the region coming to compete. There were some closely contested matches being played over the day with clear skies, good temperatures and little wind to accompany the players. Brock Collins doubled up on the day winning both the A grade singles and doubles with his partner Chris Ellison. Jered Price broke through to

THIS year's Malanda Bullride is back, with their “breaking the barrier” spectacular, taking on the arena for the first time in three years on Saturday October 9 at the Malanda Showgrounds. The popular ride has seen cowboys and cowgirls from across the region since 2012, with this year promising to be bigger and better than ever. Malanda Bull Ride Coordinator and Committee Treasurer Kate Stokes said that it is an exciting event coming back after a three year hiatus. “We are hosting our seventh annual event for the first in three years due to a gap year and the sudden COVID outbreak,” she said “This year it promises to be better than ever with up to six hours of entertainment. “From 3pm we will start with the junior calf ride, mini bulls and then go to the popular open ride and there will be a big screen to watch it all on.” Ms Stokes said that her and the committee are ready to rumble with just a little bit of nerves to follow. “I think we are pretty excited, just a little bit nervous after our long hiatus,” she said. “Regardless of that I genuinely think this year will be the biggest and best we have had yet.” The event kicks off at 3pm with gates opening to the public

Mareeba Annuals kicks off spring racing THE SPRING racing season officially kicked off across the region in Mareeba on Saturday with racegoers enjoying a great day of racing, fashion and fun at the Annuals race day. With perfect weather, the country race day saw racegoers return to the Mareeba Turf Club to socialise off track and enjoy live racing action on track. The five race card was a highlight with experienced

jockey Shane Pawsey having the most successful day on track winning three out of the five races. The QTIS Maiden Plate started the race card with Pawsey winning on You Dreamt What. In race two of the day, the Mareeba Bracelet Benchmark, Lacey Morrison stormed home on Fluttering Pawsey then again returned

to win race three, the Class B Handicap on Macipenko and race four on Forgiato. The last race of the day, the Mareeba Cup was won by He's Wow Class ridden by Scott Sheargold. Racing continues this weekend with the Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival and will return the Tablelands on Saturday, September 18 with the Atherton Annuals.

THE Atherton Roosters have capped off their final home game of the Cairns District Rugby League season in style, by downing the Innisfail Leprechauns 20-18 at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night. It was one of the year's biggest boilovers as the energy stacked Roosters took down the second placed Innisfail first grade outfit. Wins also in the two earlier lower grade games gave the Roosters a clean sweep of celebrations over the visiting

Innisfail teams. In the main game, the Roosters welcomed the visitors to the Stadium with two converted tries in the opening minutes to set up an early 12-0 lead. Both tries were scored by winger Ty Grogan who also booted the conversions. Innisfail replied with two of their own tries in the lead up to half time which locked the score up at 12 all for the break. Hooker Glenn Dumbrell’s try mid way through the second term pushed the Roosters back in front 18-12.

However, Innisfail soon found the try line for their third try and the score was again locked up at 18 all with fourteen minutes left to play. With five minutes remaining, a penalty went the Roosters way and it was in a perfect position for Ty Grogan to kick the two match winning points. Grogan landed the extras which gave him a total of sixteen points for the game. Saturday’s win also retained the John Cole Toyota Mayors Cup for the Roosters with the prized trophy remaining in Atherton for another twelve months. The Roosters reserve grade side also delivered an upset in defeating the high flying Innisfail side 12-6. In the under 18 match, the young Roosters warmed up for the coming finals series with a 50-20 victory over Innisfail. Centre Keyarn Porter crossed for three tries in the Roosters total while half Aiden Carson grabbed a double. The Senior Roosters play their final 2021 premiership games against the Edmonton Storm this Saturday at Edmonton’s Petersen Park.

Magro claims main event MAREEBA Speedway hosted another round of thrilling race action on Saturday with John Magro dominating proceedings to win the main event. Magro claimed the feature race ahead of Anthony Gunnell’s NQ90 with Cameron Lowe’s NQ21 third, followed by Ryan Potts’ NQ20 in fourth. Earlier in the night Troy Duncan took a spin on turns one and two and was soon collected by both Gunnell and Potts. Shortly afterwards Duncan

also took a hit from Jake Hooper which soon ended any hopes of success on the night for both he and Hooper. Meantime Brody Duncan capped a strong night claiming the win in the main race of the Junior Formula 500s. In a closely fought final Duncan in his 48j won the feature race ahead of Nate Campbell in a 77j, with Summer Allen (15j) in third and Dylan Hedger finishing in fourth.

Bulls lockdown Comets with a draw THE Mareeba Bulls premier mens have managed to scrape out a draw after their Sunday match-up against the Southside Comets at Lindsay Australia Stadium in Mareeba. The Bulls were forced into a two-week hibernation as a snap

lockdown hit Cairns in recent weeks but now they are out in force. After winning their first game back last week against Innisfail United the Bulls were looking to start a streak heading into the end of the season, the Southside

Comets put an end to that idea however as they managed a 2 all draw. There are only two more games remaining in the regular season as the Bulls face off against the Marlin Coast Rangers and Edge Hill United.

There were several different categories for cars to enter for the race, matching up against similar cars to their own, keeping the race fair and exciting.

Gladiators secure win for last home game

A TWO-WEEK rest did little to calm the raging Mareeba Gladiators storm as they finished up their last home game of the season last Saturday night, taking away the win against Cairns Suburbs 26-18. From the first to the final whistle, it was a tough contest where mistakes were often punished by both sides, Suburbs broke through first after

some miscommunication by Mareeba caused a collision of friendly players. The Gladiator’s defense was superb on the night keeping Suburbs locked out even as they were inches from the line. The home side soon went on the attack and scoring a try assisted with some brilliant passing to get around the Suburbs defenders.

It was a back-and-forth contest for some time as mistakes proved fatal, but it wasn’t until after halftime that the Gladiators really pulled away. The game was all but decided after the Gladiators managed to secure three back-to-back tries as they edged closer towards the final whistle. For Gladiators stalwarts Jack Pedersen and Keripo Gutchen Gela it

was good to finish on a high as they have decided to hang up their jerseys and retire after the season ends. Mareeba Gladiators captain/coach Trent Barnard said that it was good to get a win for the last home game of the season. “The boys deserve it, it’s a long year and then COVID come again and knocked the competition on the

head for a couple of weeks,” he said. “It’s a bit of a reward from a long season and to get one back at home is really good. “A couple of draws and close losses stuffed our season up a bit.” Now the Gladiators will travel away for their last game of the season as they take on Ivanhoes in Smithfield.

Gladiators’ Finals Battle! Finals time for young Gladiators

Mareeba Gladiators Under 14 captain Chase Sheppard.

Mareeba Gladiators Under 14 side are through to their second semi-final this weekend after their win on Saturday.

MAREEBA Junior Rugby League (MJRL) has moved into the business end of their 2021 season with their young U14 and U16 teams both playing their semi-finals over the weekend. The young gladiators have spent all season toiling away in the Cairns District Rugby League (CDRL) arena and through some twists and turns, they have made it to the end. The U16s went up against Cairns Brothers on Saturday who proved themselves to be quality over quantity,

winning the semi-final over Mareeba. Despite going down in the match, Under 16's Captain Cain Hastie was proud of his team for making it this far. “It feels really good to get here at the end of the season,” he said. “The boys have been putting in throughout the year and really turning up for each other.” The younger U14s have proven their mettle time and time again, winning against Yarrabah on Saturday and making it through to the next semi this

weekend. Under 14s captain Chase Sheppard said that while Yarrabah was a tough side to beat, he had full confidence in his squad. “Full credit to the boys they have really dug in during the right half of the season, proud of them," he said. The Under 14's will play Redlynch this Saturday and a win will see them progress to the grand final on September 18.

Mareeba Gladiators Under 16 side lost their first semi-final on Saturday, brrining their 2021 season to an end.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT Season 2021 has been a great year for MJRL. The club has 264 registered players spanning the age groups under 6 through to under 16. These numbers are extremely pleasing after the 2020 season which was heavily impacted by the developing COVID situation. It cannot be understated the 124 volunteers consisting of grandparents, parents, caregivers and siblings filling valuable on field and game day roles. The under 6 and under 7 teams started the

year playing league tag, a modified game of league that involves limited contact. Watching these young kids embark on their footy journey has been a memorable part of the year. The highlight for me being the under 7s completing their tackle ready program and finishing the year strongly with contact games in a controlled environment with accredited coaches. The under 8s through to under 12s play non-competition games they are always competitive, played in good spirit and I can certainly say they hold their own when

competing against the Cairns based teams. The under 13 to under 16 sides play for points and ultimately a spot in the end of year finals series. Again, all sides are competitive in the Cairns competition. This year will see the under 14 and under 16 teams in the semifinals, which will be played in Cairns. Both have strong squads and are strong chance to advance through the finals campaign to the grand final. I’m looking forward to seeing both these teams progression and will be down in Cairns supporting the lads.
