A LOCAL man who fought in the Fire Support Battle of Coral and Balmoral has been formally acknowledged for his services and undisputed gallantry more than 50 years after he returned home from Vietnam. John Williams, who moved to Mareeba more than 16 years ago recently received a citation – a green badge with a star in the middle – which signifies it was specifically earnt by Mr Williams. Mr Williams now intends to proudly wear the citation above his medals on important remembrance days, like Anzac Day. A 50th anniversary commemoration brochure publicly recounted the battle. It mentioned that in May
1968 the first Australian task force deployed two battalions to an area 20kms north of Bien Haa city in Vietnam to intercept and disrupt enemy forces withdrawing from the capital, Saigon and the Bien Haa-Long Binh base complex. Several fire support bases (FSB) were established to provide defended firing points with artillery and mortars which would cover foot patrols to be sent out by the battalions (1RAR and 3RAR). One of these FSB’s was dubbed “Coral” which was situated 7kms north of the town, Tan Uyen. “I’m very proud to receive this, I suppose it gives me closure, for a lack of a better word,” a reflective Mr Williams told The Express. “It will hopefully put some

ghosts to rest for me.” Mr Williams was just 19 years of age when he left for Vietnam in 1967. One particular memory remains firmly entrenched in his mind years after arriving back onto home soil following his Vietnam tour duties. “I remember flying back into Sydney airport in November 1968 at around 3am,” Mr Williams recalled.
“We did that so we didn’t encounter any angry demonstrators or demonstrations at the airport. At the time there were people against the war and the Australians participating in it. “Looking back, it was a very emotional time; it still is, it never leaves you, I try not to think about my time in Vietnam, apart from on ANZAC Day, but receiving this is a real honour and something I’ll treasure.”

Time to build new highway, not bridge says Knuth
Edmonton area now favoured as new highway exit point BY MICHAEL WARREN THE ongoing push to establish and construct a new dual lane inland highway to link Mareeba with Cairns has taken an interesting twist with a different outer suburb now thought to be preferred ahead of Redlynch. Throughout the year the Kuranda Bypass Road steering committee has advocated for it to enter or leave Cairns from Redlynch, however it’s understood Transport and Main Roads (TMR) doesn’t support that option. The Express however, understands that TMR views the picturesque suburb as too residential and simply not the ideal entry/exit point. As such it’s now believed Edmonton, or quite possibly an area near Gordonvale have both firmed as potential linkage options from Mareeba if the road was ever to be built. The new highway would also potentially include a 1.4km tunnel on the Cairns side to avoid any clash with existing World Heritage rainforest. That development comes after both Hill MP Shane Knuth and Kennedy MP Bob Katter met with TMR officials in Cairns to further lobby the case for the inland highway to be constructed as a matter of priority. The potential or even imme-
diate construction of the much talked about highway though hinges on the findings of a $1.6M planning study which TMR confirmed it’s currently in the process of finalizing. The study was commissioned to investigate capacity, safety and efficiency improvements of transport routes between Cairns and The Tablelands including any serious potential for the Kuranda Range Bypass Road. “The meeting with TMR officials was very positive,” Mr Knuth told The Express. “The desire for this highway has been pushed for more than 40 years; along with saving up to 25-30 minutes on the drive one-way this highway would open up other inland regions like Cape York, the Gulf of Carpentaria and the mineral province. “There has been a push for Redlynch, however I believe TMR is uncomfortable about this. “I believe some within TMR have put their cases forward that they’re uncomfortable with it coming out at Redlynch so there’s now an interest in it possibly coming out around Edmonton or just south of that area. “That seems to be the favorable exit point from the Cairns side of things at this present moment, as it’s a less residential area.”

HILL MP Shane Knuth believes the construction of a new dual lane highway between Mareeba and Cairns far outweighs the benefits of rehabillating the decrepit and troublesome Barron Bridge near Kuranda. Transport and Main Roads recently confirmed a $2.6M study just underway to investigate if the aging structure should be replaced or rehabilitated will be finalized in mid-October. Tablelanders have experienced ongoing delays and frustrations with the bridge since last October when TMR introduced traffic lights at either end and reduced the structure to one lane only. “The assessment into the future of the Barron Bridge will be released in October but the last thing we want to see is the State Government participate in the construction of a new $400m bridge,” Mr Knuth said. “Instead, the time is now right to construct a new $400m inland highway from Mareeba to Cairns. “There is still a lot of ongoing frustration with the Kuranda Range in regards to it being closed, sometimes two to three times a week because of traffic accidents and the like. “A real opportunity now exists to build this inland highway and open up this region.” State Road Minister Mark Bailey told The Express just weeks ago that “TMR expects the changed traffic conditions (on the bridge) to remain in place until October while investigations, testing, and repairs are carried out”.

Bendigo Bank committed to Ravenshoe community BY MICHAEL WARREN A SPOKESPERSON has moved swiftly to address rumours that Ravenshoe’s Bendigo Bank branch may close unless local community members volunteer to take on director roles with Ravenshoe-Gulf Country Community Enterprises Limited (RGCCEL). The spokesman confirmed with The Express that contrary to ongoing speculation “there are no plans to close the branch”. Instead, the bank expressed its ongoing commitment to the small Tablelands community. “Community Bank Ravenshoe-Gulf Country and Bendigo Bank would like to outline its commitment to partnering with and supporting the RavenshoeGulf Country community,” a statement prepared for The Ex-
press read. “The Community Bank model has always been about local communities working in partnership with the Bank to deliver community outcomes. “Bendigo Bank acknowledges the role the Chair and all other directors on the Board of Ravenshoe-Gulf Country Community Enterprises Limited play representing the community as part of this unique partnership model. It’s something we don’t take for granted. “The Bank also recognise that, like all community organisations, turnover and rotation of people on local committees and Boards, is essential. “The Board of RavenshoeGulf Country Community Enterprises Limited is currently at this stage in its development and together with the Bank, we are
working closely to recruit several new, passionate volunteer directors to continue to service the community. “Bendigo Bank and its Community Partners take very seriously the role we play in local communities and we are proud to service and support the wider communities of Far North Queensland (FNQ). “Across FNQ, Community Bank companies in the last financial year have collectively returned more than $231,000 to a range of community-determined projects including community facilities and for infrastructure, sports and recreation initiatives. “Together, we look forward to continuing to service our local Ravenshoe-Gulf Country customers and to supporting the wider FNQ community into the future.”
New plan to revive regional journalism
KAP Leader Robbie Katter has announced a new plan to help revive regional journalism.
A NEW plan to inject life back into the dying regional journalism industry has been put forward by Katter’s Australia Party (KAP) as they bid to secure State and Federal support. The Regional Journalism Rescue Plan embodies KAP’s support for journalism job security in regional Australia after recent years have seen Queensland’s rural and regional communities failed by trading regional papers for metro ratings. KAP Leader and Traeger MP Robbie Katter believes that regional papers are a lifeblood for the communities they serve, keeping the residents informed and up to date. He said rural and regional residents, unable to access local and reliable news content, would be the greatest victims of the trend. “When it comes to news, local content is key, we need trusted local media voices to inform our communities of local events and issues,” Mr Katter said. “Local journalism is on its knees, and this is in no one’s
PAGE 4 The Express, Wednesday, July 21, 2021
best interest. “If the Government and media organisations work cohesively, we believe new opportunities can be created for journalism in regional Queensland. “Moreover, this plan could serve as a print for the rest of the country.” Mr Katter said the KAP would write to both the State and Federal Governments seeking their assistance in providing a strong and sustainable future for regional journalism. Greg Watson from the Queensland Country Press Association said there were some real glimmers of hope in Queensland’s print sector. “There is a resurgence going on in Queensland country newspapers with over thirty news and/or independent publication start-ups since News Corp have stopped printing in regional communities,” he said. “These regional independent outlets have been strongly welcomed by the communities. “I think when the papers
closed there was an outpouring from communities who have lost their local newspaper.” The four points of KAP’s Regional Journalism Rescue Plan are: • Legislating regional quotas with regards to broadcast news (e.g. a minimum percentage of regionally-based reporters must comprise an entire network’s staff), similar to content quotas legislated for the networks by the Federal Government 1. • Immediate reinstatement of legislation requiring the State Government to advertise its official notices in print publications in regional communities where they exist. • In the short-term, subsidies for remote newspaper delivery costs to ensure papers are still delivered to all communities in Queensland. • The creation of other incentives for regional community media organisations to continue trading and employing local talent in journalism.

Historic church heritage listing success A HISTORIC Mareeba Church that has been standing for more than half a century has successfully been recognised as a piece of Australian and architectural history after officially being heritage listed in recent weeks. The Mareeba Uniting Church was built in 1960 on the Corner of Rankin and Walsh Street by renowned Cairns architect Eddie Oribin whose other works including his own home and studio, have been heritage listed. The application for the Mareeba Uniting Church to become heritage listed was lodged in February by the Australian Institute of Architects.
They felt that there are not enough post World War II buildings heritage listed and acted on behalf of the local community to keep the building in its original glory. Queensland president of the Australian Institute of Architects Dr Michael Lavery said that they are excited to have helped the local community in getting the church heritage listed. “The Institute of Architects is thrilled to assist in highlighting and having listed important heritage places in the state,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of listings for buildings post-World
War II and normally listings are put forward by private citizens, they’re time consuming and a lot of information required to do them. “We became aware that the church was going to have to sell the building and knowing that it was going to be sold we wanted to help the community in protecting it.” “It really is a fantastic example of this kind of architectural work and of this architects work.” The organisation that manages Uniting Churches across North Queensland, Perspiratory Carpentaria, has stated they do
not have a current decision on the future of the church. “Due to the heritage listing we are considering what might be the options for the property into the future,” a spokesman said. The Uniting Church in Australia Property Trust makes the final decision on the future of the church, whether it is to be sold or not. Becoming heritage listed does not mean that the church cannot be sold however it allows property owners to apply for State and Federal Government funds to assist the maintenance of the property.

Relocation date set for library
The Mareeba Library in Byrnes Street will close at the start of August as it begins to relocate to the Cedric Davies Community Hub on Anzac Avenue.
THE existing Mareeba Library on Byrnes Street will close its doors to the public for the last time on Saturday, August 7, before reopening at the new Cedric Davies Community Hub on Anzac Avenue. The new library will feature more space, dedicated learning areas and special levels of service, not previously accessible and will open to the public on Monday, August 16. With ample off-street parking, a coffee station, meeting room, a room for patrons to read and relax, increased public computer booking capacity, and wi-fi access throughout, MSC Mayor Angela Toppin encourages all members of the community to visit the new library.
Mayor Toppin said that the closure had been delayed from the original date due to the size of the relocation. “Library staff have worked to ensure that the move is completed as quickly as possible and means that library patrons will experience all the benefits of the new site,” she said. “There is also an area of the library dedicated to young people, bequeathed by Laurie Tracona, which will feature a collection of youth books and library items, a gaming console, television and study area. “Library staff are encouraging our library users to borrow resources ahead of time or to make use of the extensive online collection during the closure.”

Sammons legacy sets sail Tom and Sheila Sparks on IONA on Friday at Tinaroo Dam.
BY ELLIE FINK AFTER a lifetime's dream of constructing his own 18 foot long sea vessel, Dr Bill Sammon’s legacy was honoured at the Tinaroo Sailing Club
when IONA took her first sail across the dam. Although Dr Sammon sadly passed in the beginning stages of the Welsford-designed Pathfinder, the Wooden Boat Association of Cairns
(WBAC) was determined to complete this project after being gifted her by his wife. Now a long five years on, the President of the WBAC Chris O’Keefe said that launching the boat made him
feel beyond proud for their small group of boat enthusiasts. “I feel immense pride that our members have banded together to produce such a beautiful boat with a finish equal to that of a professional builder,” he said. “It certainly wasn’t easy, and near impossible at times given the delays imposed by COVID and other projects, however each of our members had one thing in mind, to complete her as a personal tribute to Dr Sammons. “The launch is one of the highlights of our annual flagship event, The Great Tinaroo Raid, which will once again be held at the Tinaroo Sailing Club where we are made very welcome.” Tom and Sheila Sparks of the WBAC have now purchased the boat and affectionately named it IONA at the launch. The rest of the program after the launch of IONA covered many events from paddling and rowing races, a Seagull outboard race and a peculiar propulsion race.

Increased visitors delights small town
Ravenshoe chamber calls for new, local members
RAVENSHOE and District Chamber of Commerce secretary Doreen Mortimore says town businesses and the local community were delighted with the increased visitor numbers over the recent school holidays. Ms Mortimore noted that local cafes were regularly full, public amenities were consistently utilised and the town’s normally sleepy main street (Grigg St) experienced a regular flow of foot traffic. Those developments are a real positive for Queensland’s highest town as it continues to bounce back from the lingering economic impacts brought on by COVID. “It’s been a really busy period for Ravenshoe, it’s just been completely wonderful to see,” Ms Mortimore told The Express. “Just moving about town over the break I noticed Grigg St park, for example, was regularly very busy. “There were families and holiday makers enjoying the solar run BBQs, or simply just enjoying the amenities, including the picnic tables. “The new car park was very busy, while the toilet block, which consists of two disability toilets, four ambience toilets and two mother change rooms were also regularly being used. “It’s just the influx of visitors the town needed, people have money to spend at the moment, considering no one can really go overseas, so it’s simply fantastic that fellow Queenslanders and those across the country that can travel, are visiting our part of the world.” Ms Mortimore said Ravenshoe has more to offer than what first meets the eye. “We don’t get spoken about much but I can promise you there is so much to do and see in our area,” the passionate resident said. “There are beautiful places like Big and Little Millstream Falls nearby, Dinner Falls and The Crater are only minutes away, while we have beautiful walks around town too. “We have such forest diversity around the area, which includes sections of world listed heritage rainforest. “We’d love people to also check out a place like the Millstream reserve, then consider having a coffee afterwards at the local bakery. The local visitor centre is another wonderful place to explore. “Come and visit Ravenshoe – we’d love to welcome you to our town.”
BY MICHAEL WARREN
A RAVENSHOE resident with a passion for the town’s ongoing viability and general sustainability has implored others to get involved with the local Chamber of Commerce. Much loved Chamber secretary Doreen Mortimore will step down from her role at the upcoming August AGM and in the interim has thrown the invitation out to other residents to get involved and help drive the future of the close-knit and sleepy Tablelands town. Ms Mortimore resigned from her position last year, but with no incoming personnel to take her place she stayed on to advocate and support her town. Now 12 months on and with Ms Mortimore to step down ahead the Ravenshoe Chamber have put a call out for people

to put their hand up and get involved. “At the AGM in August the secretary position will be vacant and I think it is a great opportunity for anyone out there to step up and take on such a position,” Ms Mortimore said. “In this particular role you’ll handle a range of tasks – it’s always important to note you are never alone, just ask and people will always help you.” The outgoing secretary said being a member of the Chamber of Commerce is a rewarding experience. “I have liked being able to inform the businesses of government decisions and of projects that they may be able to get involved in that would create extra funds for their family business,” she explained. “Another (highlight) is when you succeed in funding and are

able to do projects that help the community to have better knowledge and interest for visitors to come to our area, “TRC have helped us with RADF and Economic Development Funds for three of our projects and we appreciate this support.” Ms Mortimore also cited the Town Hall facelift, the placement of a large black and white historical photo on the side of the butchers for its 100th birthday and the achievement of a new concrete pathway from the NAB bank to
the butcher shop as some of her favourite memories during her five years in the role. “Ravenshoe's future is bright,” Ms Mortimore said. “The diversity we have within a 10km drive of the CBD is amazing. “Our forest is so full of wildlife; we have 13 possum species, plus flora and birds. We are the Highest Town in Queensland with altitude.” The Ravenshoe Chamber of Commerce AGM will be held on August 17.

Important role for Shorthorns in the North Tallangalook Shorthorn and Santa Gertrudis Stud prinicipal, Nick Trompf believes the Tablelands has much to offer bull-buying cattle producers and the meat buying public.
BY SALLY TURLEY SINCE the emergence of the cattle tick as a problem in the northern cattle industry and the introduction of Bos Indicus cattle as a remedy to that problem, the Shorthorn breed has been somewhat sidelined in North Queensland over the last few decades. But Tallangalook Shorthorn and Santa Gertrudis stud principal, Nick Trompf believes the breed still has an important role to play. Valued for its beef characteristics since the Shorthorn breed originated in England in the late 1700s, their genetics have been used in the develop-
ment of 40 new cattle breeds worldwide. Mr Trompf's grandfather Vic began breeding Shorthorns under the Tallangalook banner in Mansfield Victoria back in 1998 and Nick took a keen interest in the stud from the start. “I was transferred up to North Queensland for work in 2001 and bought a 170 acre block at Minbun in 2003. I moved the core of the stud herd up here and have continued refining the genetics since then. We have since sold Shorthorn bulls all around the state, from Beaudesert to Georgetown, to Central and Western Queensland,” Mr Trompf said.

“The Shorthorn is more susceptible to northern parasites, but if you are only maintaining a bull, it is not such a big issue and Shorthorn bulls are active, aggressive breeders, performing in commercial herds for up to eight years. “The Shorthorn cross steers produced display excellent weight gains, good feed conversion and increased marbling and tenderness and the cows are the most maternal and productive of females, breeding every year.” Overall the Shorthorn is the ideal breed for the production of high quality beef with its suitability for use in rotational crossbreeding programs for high
conception rates with minimal maintenance and in a recent Cargill “Beefworks” project, 290 Shorthorn sired steers had an impressive average yield of 60.52%. Tallangalook is the only Shorthorn stud north of Emerald and Nick and his wife Alison have recently expanded their operation to include a Santa Gertrudis stud. “We bought a Waco Santa bull three years ago to breed composites out of our Droughtmaster/Red Brahman commercial cows and were so impressed with the results we decided to launch a second stud,” Mr Trompf said.
“We paid up to $10,000 a cow/calf unit for four elite Santa cows with very high indexing EBV figures from a stud near Dalby. We sold our first calf at the Mareeba Field Days this year as an 812kg, two year old for $12,000. There was a lot of interest in him and we could have sold him many times over. “Similarly, we bought our last Shorthorn bull, a proven five year old Bayview sire in the top 1% indexing in breed for $15,000 and the day after, his first 4 sons sold to a top of $29,000, creating a new record to average $21,400/hd. “With no Shorthorn or Santa studs nearby, we have been forced to go shopping for our stock down south, but there is a great selection of most breeds here and it would be good to see local producers shopping for bulls in their back yard. “My ambition when I started the Better Beef Open Day in 2019 was to encourage Tableland cattle people to think of the area as a seed stock nursery
for beef genetics. With 13 leading studs taking part this year, buyers can take their time and peruse a range of breeds without pressure to buy. “The good quality soils and reliable rainfall here means we can also produce high end steaks to rival the best of them and with local butchers like Cross Custom Meats, focussing on buying and showcasing quality, local meats, customers are travelling from around the north to buy their superior product,” he said. Mr Trompf now spends the majority of his time farming between his Lake Eacham and Tarzali properties and said he aimed to double the number of bulls he sold annually from around 20, up to 40 sires per year. He still operates by his grandfather's advice to stick to middle of the road, sound, functional, early maturing cattle with good temperament and good feet and legs, that will give his clients plenty of options in their own business models.
Visitors to Nick and Alison Trompf’s Tallangalook Shorthorns and Santa Gertrudis stud next month will be able to view their Santa sire Waco M720. Impressed with results gained from crossing him over their own cows, the decision was made last year to turn Tallangalook into a dual-breed stud going forward.

A tribute to Daniel Mitchell DANIEL Mitchell has been remembered as a joyous, soulful, kind young man who spent every waking hour tending to others, a selfless dedication that has made a mark on everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing him. A tragic road accident in June of this year sadly took the life of Daniel who was on a trip away to Townsville. Born in Atherton on October 22, 1997 the 23 year old spent most of his life living on the

Tablelands, making friends and memories, always with dreams of where too next. Surrounded by a loving family and three brothers that he lived with, Daniel was brought up with the same kind of love and compassion that he constantly showed others. “Daniel came into my life when he turned eight and he’s been my child ever since,” Daniel’s stepmother Deborah Booth said. “It’s been a blessing to have
him in my life and have the joy in raising such a beautiful, strong, young man. “He really has done our family proud the way he grew up and developed. “He gave so much of himself to his friends and family.” Daniel has been in Deborah’s life for many years and together they made many memories, including one where Daniel was learning to swim. Jumping off the kayak and swimming to Deborah, taking
the leap which would prove be the first of many. This memory is one that sticks in Deborah’s mind as it pays tribute to his courage, his courage to jump off the kayak and the courage he continued to display in his life. Fitness was a passion for the young man and he could often be found in Furious Fitness in Atherton, a place he often told Deborah about, the people there, and how they helped him find a path.

Local creates app to take the stress out of fitness MAKING the jump from law to fitness is not one often seen in the working world, but one Mareeba local has made it work, going from a successful law firm owner to a thriving fitness app founder. Pietro Girgenti worked in Mareeba for 10 years after founding Girgenti Lawyers where he eventually expanded into Cairns then onto the southeastern corner in Brisbane where he sold it off mid-2019. Now Mr Girgenti could fully focus on his new Fitii Personal Trainer app which he ended up launching about a year later in November 2019. Mr Girgenti said that throughout his career in law he loved to provide passionate people with the tools to succeed and he found none more passionate than those in the fitness industry. “In the law firm the one part that I absolutely loved above all else was helping people who were really passionate about their craft, helping them succeed and being their support/guidance,” he said. “We had a lot of clients in the fitness space so we spoke with and worked with them, it is an industry where people are super passionate about the craft that they have. “Giving them the tools to concentrate on their business while we help grow it from a different side of things is really what inspired us.” The Fitii Personal Trainer app takes the hassle and anxiety out of looking for classes or trainers nearby, compiling a list of providers near you and giving you the easiest way to book. “We call it E-Harmony meets Uber in that you can find trainers or classes near you and you get to look at the profiles of the service providers and what they’re offering,” Mr Girgenti said. “It’s not Tinder because we want them to hang around longer than a night so it’s about pairing people up and once their paired up creating a seamless transaction. “It is intimidating trying to engage in

fitness services, in our market research we’ve spoken to so many consumers who didn’t know where to start or tried to reach out to trainers and never heard back.” Now nearly a year on from launching his app Mr Girgenti now has trainers in every single state and territory bar Tasmania. “We’re really happy and we’re constantly trying to iterate and innovate,” Mr
Girgenti said. “This is our version one and we’ve got some huge things in the pipeline we are pretty excited about. “Mareeba products go all over the country already, most of it is in the ag sector, but let’s bring technology onto that list as well.” The Fitii Personal Trainer app is available to download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple Store.

COUNCILLORS Peter Hodge and Bernie Wilce recently celebrated the installation of new signs with the Atherton Park runners. “This is a great example of community, industry and Tablelands Regional Council working together for a great outcome,” Councillor Peter Hodge said. “Funding for the project was provided by RATCH-Australia’s Mount Emerald Wind Farm Community Fund and we collaborated with Atherton Parkrun to deliver signs along
their course on the Rail Trail in Atherton. “Parkrun is a free, weekly community event that welcomes up to 60 participants each week. “The signs provide directions and distances, which facilitates goal-setting and improves the confidence of the participants. “We love to support the health and wellbeing of our community in any way we can and appreciate the assistance of businesses like the Mount Emerald Wind Farm,’ said Councillor Hodge.”

Kids learn new dance skills OVER the school holidays kids got the chance to spend some time learning and developing new dances with a special program run by Mulungu and the Australian Ballet Company. Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Service partnered with the Australian Ballet Company and Miriki Performing Arts to bring two separate workshops to the region. One of the workshops was for primary school aged kids and was held in Mareeba whilst the other workshop, geared towards older kids, was held in Cairns.
The kids got to co-create a new dance with the Australian Ballet outreach team to perform in front of their families and community. Samanthia Dooley from Mulungu said the kids were very excited to be able to learn and create their own unique dance. “It’s not everyday you get to dance with the Australian Ballet Company,” she said. “This will give our kids the confidence to believe and dream big of what they want to aspire to be in the future. “Over the five days the kids had lots of fun and laughter… the program’s outcome

AND as the Cinderella ball was just around the corner, COVID struck again, leading fairy-godmother figure Yolonde Entsch and the NAIDOC organising committee to postpone the long awaited Doomadgee event. After months of excitement, preparation and thousands of dresses being donated from every corner of Australia, the decision to cancel the “Under the Stars” NAIDOC Ball was one that didn’t come lightly. Yolonde made the announcement to Doomadgee and the wider community via Facebook, after being given advice by Queensland Health. “Our number one priority is the safety and wellbeing of this community and with many people already suffering from respiratory issues, nobody wanted to run the risk of bringing COVID to Doomadgee,” she said. “Also, given the nature of life in the community, it would have been impossible to ask people to dance 1.5 metres apart, especially when this community was so excited to have a Ball with a band from Cairns.” She has worked alongside the community of Doomadgee for years and has spent the past few months organising this ball. Her compassionate cry for formal wear donations was seen across the country and even parts of the United States, England and Canada. She knew though that she
couldn’t leave the community she was so passionate about without a night of fun under the stars. “Having seen how excited the women of Doomadgee were to choose a gown and get dressed up, I couldn’t leave without them enjoying a night of glitz and glamour, so we decided to have a fashion parade,” she said. “What I also loved was that a number of little girls got dressed up and walked the runaway with many members of the community coming to watch.” Doomadgee local Maria Mick said that the runway show was an amazing event for her small community, especially her daughter. “I loved seeing all the girls and elderly ladies getting all dressed up and professional for once because I am used to the only dressing up being in black and white for funerals,” she said. “My daughter, Destiny, had an absolute ball and she was even able to dance with a boy for the first time. “I am really looking forward to having a bigger and better ball soon.” The Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council alongside Yolonde and NAIDOC Organising Committee will work together in hopes to give the town of Doomadgee the Cinderella story they have been dreaming for.
Lui shares experiences at forum MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui discussed what motivated her to run for State Parliament in 2016 and what it felt like to be elected a State MP during a recent women’s leadership forum in Bamaga. Ms Lui also highlighted the challenges and opportunities she’s experienced along the way and the advice she has for other women who are interested in running for office. The event, part of NPA Family and Community Services’ program of professional development opportunities for women, is designed to celebrate, honour and inspire women as they pursue excellence at home, at work and in the community. Ms Lui said she was excited to share her leadership journey
with the attendees. “I was honoured to attend this forum and share my experiences of trying to balance parenthood, the ongoing need to travel which means time away from my family, the mix of urgent and long term needs of the electorate and being an accessible and receptive representative and advocate for our region,” Ms Lui explained. “It is a great privilege to be the Member for Cook and to be the first, but absolutely not the last, Torres Strait Islander in Parliament. “I encourage any woman considering running for office, seeking a promotion, considering study or further study, to give it a go. We are capable of much more than we can imagine.”

ATHERTON District Meals on Wheels has honoured seven of its most dedicated volunteers, with special mentions to Volunteer of the Year, Robert Scilironi. The awards were given on the group's special morning tea at Gallo’s Dairyland, with over 40 of their volunteers present to honour seven awards of the day. Atherton District Meals on Wheels President, Geoff Jensen honoured long service leave badges and a small gift to its longest serving volunteers for the first time and hopes to make it an annual occurrence.
“It makes me feel very humbled to have people who have been volunteering for so long, some over 10 years,” he said. “They rock up for three days a week and help cook and clean and deliver. “We decided to award long service badges to the members who have volunteered for over 10 years and we hope to do this around the same time every year.” Mr Jensen said that the committee also chose a long serving dedicated volunteer Robert Scilironi to be the 2021 Volunteer of the Year.
“Robert does a lot of work for the Atherton Meals on Wheels. He mainly specialises in preparing soups in the kitchen,” Mr Jesen said. “He also assists in the cleaning up afterwards, starts early in the morning until the evening and just really stands out.” The Atherton Meals on Wheels is “more than just a meal” and services the majority of the northern Tablelands region. Elders Insurance celebrates 20 years in business LOCAL business woman Jeanette Suffield has been working in the insurance industry since she was 16, now nearly 50 years on she celebrates the 20th anniversary of her own insurance business, Elders Insurance Tablelands. After spending a lifetime in the Insurance game, Jeanette Suffield made the leap to buy Elders Insurance Tablelands at the behest of the Elders Insurance regional manager. Starting in 2001 with just herself, one office and one other employee, Mrs Suffield has grown to have nearly 10 staff and two offices, one in Malanda and one in Tolga. Mrs Suffield’s feels that her decision to buy the Elders franchise and strike it out on her own was the “best thing” she ever did. “It changed my life really, at that time it was only a small

Local disappointed in big Bank charge A LOCAL man says he feels dupped after Westpac bank charged him $5 in monthly account fees over an eight-year period instead of advising him about a different account that was suitable for his needs but didn’t incur any regular fees. “When you applied for your account, you may have been eligible for a Westpac basic bank account with no monthly fees,” a recent letter to the man, who wishes to remain anonymous, said. “This option may not have been considered for you when your account was opened. This is our mistake, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.” The letter then went on to inform the local resident that his account would be automatically switched to the Basic account on August 27, with no change to features, except no monthly account keeping fees. The man also advised that Westpac had not offered to reimburse him for the eight years of fees it charged him to use the nominated account. “What burns me is the statement in their letter, ‘this option may have not been considered
for me’,” the man said. “Their staff member was either wilfully maximising their profits, or the staff member did not have full product knowledge regarding their accounts and options. “Either way it is a sad indictment upon Westpac. They either have or had a culture of profits before people or they have had very poor staff training. “Imagine the figures, if they have 100,000 of these such accounts, each month that’s half a million dollars in bank fees for absolutely not cost to them. Is it any wonder they are making billions.” Westpac said its moved to make things right going forward. “We regularly review our products and services, and during this process we identified some customers may have been eligible for an alternate bank account,” the bank said. “These customers are being moved to a basic bank account and we will put things right by making sure they are not left out of pocket as a result of this error.”

Old Chevrolets still going strong BY SALLY TURLEY THESE two gracious old ladies were spotted recently sitting amongst a fleet of rough and tough Toyotas, Nissans, Rangers, Pajeros and Colarados, out the front of the Oasis Roadhouse, west of Mt Garnet. The 1928 Chevrolets began their journey in a party of four vehicles, from Port Phillip, Victoria on June 8. They have towed camper trailers 2601km so far
and were heading to Karumba, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, the Oodnadatta track and on to the Flinders Ranges, before turning their heads for home. Owner/drivers, Bill Eldridge and Peter Langford were doing the drive as part of a long distance touring event held every five years by their organisation, the Vintage Drivers Club. With a top speed of 75km/hr, they had plenty of time to take in the scenery and contemplate the meaning of life along the way.
Restoration of Bill Eldridge's (left) Chev was completed in April, 2019 and he said as soon as he got the green light to leave Melbourne on this huge drive, he was off. His Chev had already clocked up 300,000 miles (480,000 km) and that figure would be significantly higher by the time they arrived back in Melbourne. Billed as “Bigger, Better and More Beautiful,” the Chev, with its standard four wheel brakes, strengthened chassis and dual
action shock absorbers won immediate approval in 1928 for its improved ride and quietness of operation. They were built as an alternative to the A Model Ford and were economically priced and easy to drive with their 21.7hp OHV 4 cylinder engine. They retail now for around $15,000 to $25,000 and up, depending on their condition, and according to Bill and Peter, they still provide a good ride.

ENTERTAINMENT Tales of Terror from Nightmare High School – a must see musical ATHERTON Performing Arts proudly presents its youth production for 2021, directed by Sarah Riber. Tales of Terror from Nightmare High School by Patrick Rainville Dorn and Stephen Murray is a horror Musical that goes oh so terribly wrong but then contrastingly bright and breezy and finally ridiculously right. There are ghastly things that occur, but thankfully, mainly in characters’ dreams. Weird and wonky happenings involving mashed potato, a mad dog and a locker stalker create fear in the bravest of hearts. Then the teachers totally let down their guard on weekends causing havoc among the students. What tortuous plan will they come up with next? And just who is the locker stalker? Come and find out at one of the four sessions of Tales of Terror from Nightmare High School at the APA Theatre, Silo Road Atherton between July 24 and 31. Harmonious and off beat songs provide soothingly ironic relief from the otherwise crazy mayhem.
Riber, a master with the musical, has a talented cast in the APA Youth Theatre, which she has guided to act and sing with confidence and flair. The budding young per-
formers sing catchy melodies with tantalising twists, sometimes in two and three part harmony. The young people act with a great sense of naturalness and ease drawing their audienc-
es in on the action. Viewers be prepared to be occasionally terrified, but mostly charmed. Remember though that this musical is not for the faint hearted. For that reason it is recommend-
ed for those 10 years and up. Of course while there are some scary moments, all turns out well in the end. You can book your seats for this compelling and lively musical at Tableland Books,
Vernon Street Atherton or online at athertonperformingarts.com.au. Covid principles apply. For further information phone Jacqui on 0449 082 307.

Changes to working holiday visas leave farmers high and dry BY RHYS THOMAS LOCAL farmers and their produce have been left high and dry after a recent change to Working Holiday Maker Visas forces them to fight over the already depleted holiday worker force. The Australian Government made a quiet change to the eligibility rules surrounding the visas in recent weeks, allowing holiday workers in regional areas to work in either tourism or hospitality sectors as an alternative to horticulture. This decision was made without any prior consultation with the horticulture industry who will feel the negative effects of this change the most. FNQ Growers president Joe Moro described the recent change as a “slap in the face” and is concerned about the effects it will have on farmers securing workers. “The horticulture industry was not consulted about this change so there is a lot of uproar
about that,” he said. “The timing of it is really shocking we don’t have a lot of working holiday visas in Australia at the moment… there is only about 100,000 out of 300,000 that are in Australia normally. “Why would you want to go and do a rough and tough job, when you can get a nice job in the tourism industry? “It’s not that we begrudge the tourism industry I know they are having their problems but the whole idea of the working holiday visas was to get them out to do the 88 days in regional areas.” Under the new changes Cairns has been identified as a regional area, meaning that backpackers can work in the massive tourism hub without traveling to work in areas on the Tablelands. After the Federal Government recently announced intentions to deliver a Seasonal Agricultural Visa, FNQ Growers wrote to the Federal Agriculture Minister urging the Government to include the Working Holiday
Visa Program in a multi-prong approach to solve seasonal labour shortages. A spokesman from the Department of Home Affairs has stated that the committee who recommended the change to the holiday visas “consulted widely.” “These changes to specified work settings for tourism and hospitality address recommendations of the Joint Standing Committee on Migration (JSCM) Inquiry into the WHM program,” they said. “The Committee consulted widely, considered 89 written submissions and over 1,000 emails from stakeholders and individuals across industry sectors and from around Australia and conducted 12 hearings attended by 87 witnesses. “Submissions were received from a range of agricultural industry bodies, associations and representatives including the National Farmers’ Federation and Growcom.”
SUPERIOR VERSATILITY
FNQ Growers President Joe Moro is concerned about the recent change to the Working Holiday Maker Visas.

Plenty of quality at Cairns Show Sale
Most successful exhibitors at the Cairns Show were Emily, Colby, King Billy and Dean Jonsson of Wombinoo Station, Mt Garnet. PHOTOS BY BERNIE ENGLISH.
BY SALLY TURLEY NUMBERS may have been down a little at this year's Cairns Show Sale due to the dreadful weather conditions on the Tablelands, but according to sale cocoordinator, Liam Kirkwood the quality of the cattle offered was exceptional across every class. “The three weeks of miserable winter rain knocked the cattle around a bit and caused the cancellation of 40 head prior to the sale, but the generosity of sponsors like the NQ Sale yards, Malanda Meat Company, Cross Custom Meats and WW Group Transport Ltd had a huge impact,” Mr Kirkwood said. Exhibitors were vying for a piece of the $10,000 prize money on offer after judging and the five meat-works buyers in attendance ensured solid prices at the sale that followed.
There were eight competitors and a crowd of around 50 to 60 spectators in the gallery for Sunday's Junior Judging and Judging competitions. “Considering it was our first year running the sale and it was held on a different date at a new venue, I think it went quite well. The Cairns yards were on the verge of being condemned and the Cairns Show Society approached us at Ray White Rural Townsville, to organise the 2021 event,” Mr Kirkwood said. “I do a lot of work up this way and between attending the Mareeba sale every week and working with clients, many of whom were old connections from my time at the meat works, I am around the Tablelands from Sunday to Tuesday each week. “The Show Sale will continue being held at the Mareeba Sale yards going forward, and
hopefully we can build it into a blue ribbon event attracting lines of cattle in 3-6 deck lots in the future. It was great to hear the Jonsson children were so excited about their family's win that they were fighting over who would take the trophy to school the next day.” Sale Class Winners were as follows – Single 0/2T Ox - Anthony Ball; Single 4T and Single 6T Ox - GE and JA Elmes; Pen of 3-6 0/2T Ox - North Qld Hay; Pen 3-6 4T Ox - Edmonton Plumbing; Pen of 3-6 6T Ox BAH Cattle Co; Pen of 10 Dryland Ox - Diamond 4J Farming Trust and Pen of 10 Coastal/Tableland Ox - WP and A Tranter. In the female section, winners were Single Trade Heifer 0-4T - WP and A Tranter; Single Export Cow 6-8T, Pen of 3-6 Trade Heifers 0-4T and Pen of 3-6 Export Cows 6-8T were
all won by Diamond 4J Farming Trust, as was the award for Most Successful Exhibitor at the show. Champion Bullock of the Show went to GE and JA Elmes; Champion Tableland/Coastal Exhibit – WP and A Tranter; Champion Dryland Exhibit Diamond 4J Farming Trust; Best Brahman Exhibit - BAH Cattle Co and Champion Pen of Bullocks of the Show - WP and A Tranter. In the sale results – Best price steers sold on account GE and JA Elmes to average 690kg and 358.2c/kg to return $2,471.58/ hd; Best pen of 10 steers sold on account WP and A Tranter to average 568kg and 353.2c/ kg to return $2,004.41/hd; Best pen of heifers sold on account Diamond 4J Farming Trust to average 480kg and 345.2c/kg to return $1,656.96 and 1 cow sold on account BAH Cattle Co at 525kg and 298.2c/kg returned $1,565.55.

WHILE we mostly have something going on in the community at any time of the year, it certainly is our busy time starting back in May with the FNQ Field Days. Of course, in addition to this, our regular Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning sessions have been well supported. Because of the effects of COVID-19 on the entire nation and world, our local Mareeba Rodeo was curtailed to just one day earlier this month and Mareeba Men's Shed was pleased and proud to support this fabulous annual event. Against the odds, our local rodeo still attracted a fair crowd of spectators and they all left smiling so that augurs well for the future Our next event will be to support the annual Christmas in July on July 25 at Davies Park. Sustainable living in Ravenshoe DISPLAYING clean, well fenced pastures and good shade coverage and shelter for stock this 134-acre property located at the end of a quiet country road offers excellent grazing in peaceful surrounds. Yards are well-maintained and functional, and sheds are in good condition. Water is sourced from a well, lifted to a tank and subsequently gravity fed across the farm. A small orchard of about 200 fruit trees, predominantly stone fruit with some avocados and some mulberry has also been established. Smaller sized and well fenced paddocks close to the house can be used for goats or sheep. Set amid an established garden is a beautifully renovated five-bedroom timber farmhouse. Rustic influences have resulted in a unique
and distinctive home characterised by an abundance of timber, exposed beams, and high ceilings. The roomy country kitchen incorporates pantry, dining and electric & slow combustion stoves and an enormous bathroom with free standing claw footed bath impresses with its individuality. The kids will appreciate the freedom of rural living and the school bus run conveniently passes the end of the lane. Regrettably, The Feast Of Our Lady Of The Chain will not be held this year. This was not an easy decision to make and many options were discussed however, due to building works on the school grounds and the limited access from that together with the continuous problems with COVID 19, we were forced to make this decision. We will however be having our normal Celebration Mass at 2.30pm on Sunday 12th September. At this stage and depending on the Covid restrictions at the time, we hope to invite any interested Parishioners to attend the Mass. A gully full of buckets A SENSATIONAL first quarter saw 18 points scored by Jerome Gully in the opening to the Winter season of the Mareeba Men’s Basketball competition. Gully spilled seven three pointers for the evening amassing a personal tally of 39 points for the Rays. Buckets 83, Stingrays 90. A highly competitive Buckets team provided considerable resistance with Brennan Collis crafting 36 points backed up by the quickness of Ricaydan Wa-
Netballers ready for northern league
son (24 points). After missing his first two attempts, Anthony Archie also kicked into over-drive contributing 18 points. Having secured Wason from last season grand final victors, Red Devils, the Buckets look rejuvenated and a genuine contender. Devils will need Zac Myrteza to find his way over to Walsh Street if they are to overcome the shock loss of Wason in the offseason trade.
Buckets leave Jerome Gully open on the threepoint arc at their peril.
LOCAL netballers will get the chance to participate in one of the only competitions being hosted outside of Queensland’s southeast corner with the inaugural Northern Netball League being held in Townsville. The Mareeba Netball Association will be sending down their U16 girls for a chance to play in the competition held at the end of the month. This competition is aimed to provide opportunities for players between 16 to 19 years of
age and a potential pathway to the Hart Sapphire series held later in August. “In preparation for this team members have been playing in our local senior competition as well as playing the Cairns U18 competition, building their skills, teamwork and match play,” Mareeba Netball Association president Michelle Cifuentes said. “The team has also been fundraising to help to get to the competition.”

Descendants of Arthur Rudolph Lane attended a special renaming of the Mareeba Gymnastics Centre to the Arthur Rudolph Lane Gymnastics Centre last Friday.
Legacy honoured with centre renaming AFTER pioneering gymnastics in Mareeba over a century ago, Arthur Randolph Lane has had his efforts recognised with the Mareeba Gymnastics Centre being renamed to the Arthur Randolph Lane Gymnastics Centre. Descendants of Arthur from across the country gathered in Mareeba last Friday for the official renaming including fifth generation gymnastic and Australian champion Callum McCarthy. Every generation of Lane’s each kept the tradition of gymnastics alive all the way down to the newest generation, each doing gymnastics at one point in their life. Desmond Lane, Arthur’s grandson, was
present for the renaming and said he felt extremely proud for his grandfather’s contribution to Mareeba gymnastics be recognised. “It’s very exciting and something we never envisioned that would happen,” he said. “It’s over 100 years since Arthur started gymnastics in Mareeba and it is a great honour to have the centre named after grandad Lane.” Arthur lane founded Mareeba National Fitness in November 1919, one year before Qantas was founded. From there he continued to push and develop gymnastics in Mareeba until 1951 at
the age of 69. Arthur then passed five years later at the age of 74, he is currently buried at the Mareeba Pioneer Cemetery. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin was excited for the Lane family and Arthur’s legacy to have the home of Mareeba gymnastics named after the man who started it all. “It is only fitting that Arthur Randolph Lane who contributed so much to the sport as an individual, and who also generated something of a family dynasty in Mareeba gymnastics, should have the honour of having the home of Mareeba gymnastics named after him,” she said.

Pride lose arm wrestle in Atherton BY MICHAEL WARREN A THREE try haul try to Hunters flyer Solo Wane and poor goalkicking from the home side helped PNG claim a 34-22 win at Atherton Junior grounds on Saturday night over the Northern Pride. Tries to Wane either side of half time, and a crucial third four-pointer in the 60th minute proved the difference with Hunters eventually claiming a five tries to four victory. However the end result doesnt reflect the closeness of the match with Pride only kicking one conversion from five attempts and scoring one
try less than the Hunters. Pride jumped PNG early with tries to Shawn Bowen (9th minute) and Grant Anderson (15th minute) helping the home side to an early 8-0 lead before the Hunters hit back with two converted tries to lead 12-8 at the main break. With the match well poised and a solid arm wrestle midway through the second half PNG broke the 16-all deadline in the 60th minute through Wane’s third try of the evening. Charlie Simon’s 69th minute try extended PNG’s lead to 24-16 and from there Hunter played the clock down
to secure its well-earned and upset 12-point victory. Pride sits 8th on the ISC ladder on 14 points and eight points adrift of ladder leaders Norths Devils. The Hunters third win of the season moved them to 11th on the ladder. Hunters 34: Brandon Nima, Solo Wane 3, Charlie Simon, Junior Rau tries Conversions, Boas 4, Simon 1. Beat Pride 22: Shawn Bowen, Grant Anderson, Matthew Musumeci, Bernard Lewis, Joshua Stuckey tries Conversions, Grant Anderson 1.

Roosters claim Tableland Cup THE prized Tableland Cup remains in Atherton after the Atherton Roosters delivered a 30-10 win over arch rivals the Mareeba Gladiators in Sunday’s Cairns District Rugby League premiership match played at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium. Atherton’s strong first half set the platform for their convincing victory in the local derby after they led 24-0 at the halftime break. The Roosters opened the scoring at the 4th minute when Ned Blackman went over off a top ball from forward Ben Whybird. Blackman followed with another soon after and the Roosters were now up 12-0. From here the Roosters continued to produce plenty of energy and were troubling Mareeba all over the park. Mareeba did have their chances but were denied by the Roosters who defended their line strongly. Tries to Ty Grogan and Brad Hammond got the Roosters further ahead and they had built a commanding lead for halftime. Glenn Dumbrell’s try soon after the restart pushed the Roosters lead out to 30-0 with 34 minutes left to play. Despite their brave effort for most of the match, the Roosters did leak some points in the final ten minutes when Aiden Morgan and Keripo Gutchen-Gela crossed for Mareeba tries. The Roosters made it a clean sweep over Mareeba in all grades by also winning the under 18s match 28-22 and the reserve grade 28-12. This Sunday the Atherton Roosters travel away to play Kangaroos at Vico Oval while Mareeba Gladiators play Brothers at Williams Park.
Roosters fullback Nick Pratten forces his way through the Mareeba defence on Sunday.
