Chamber seeks answers on Mareeba dialysis services THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce is seeking answers from the Queensland Government over why the Mareeba Hospital cannot deliver dialysis services. The Chamber has been lobbying for health services in
the Mareeba community to be maintained and improved for many years. Currently, the closest dialysis units available to Mareeba residents are located at hospitals in Atherton, Cairns and Mossman.

Chamber president Joe Moro said the chamber was seeking information from the Queensland Government about the number of dialysis patients receiving treatment at nearby hospitals, along with their geographic location.
“We believe there are some 12 dialysis patients in the Mareeba area and sadly, these people are forced to travel away from home three times a week for treatment,” Mr Moro said. “This is not good enough – not for the patients nor their

Census and growth has shown no sign of easing. “The Chamber believes the Mareeba population warrants its own dialysis unit.” The Chamber has written to Premier Annastacia Palasz cz uk for an urgent meeting.
“Mum & Dad built up the family farm for the kids and a profitable future. But the kids are adults now with their own families and mature arrangements have to be made to secure everyone’s future. THE push to prevent limes being imported from Mexico to Australia and onwards to the Tablelands region has continued with local farmers voicing their concerns with Government officials during a specially convened meeting in Mareeba.

In front of a packed crowd at the Mareeba Leagues Club which included farmers and industry professionals local members Shane Knuth MP and Bob Katter MP reassured attendees they stand side by side against any potential lime importation from Mexico to Australia. “We want the State and Federal Government to knock this on the head immediately r Knuth told The Express. e ico already has issues which haven’t been resolved regarding citrus canker and now we’re talking about importing limes from an area that’s a bio security risk. “The allowance of lime importation into Australia and the ablelands could massively decimate the industry the message is clear; we won’t let this happen on the ablelands. Mutchilba citrus farmer Karen Muccignat told Department of Agriculture ater and nvi-
ronment officers the local lime industry will be destroyed if the application to import limes from Mexico is approved. “The Government is currently assessing an application from Mexico to import limes into Australia this is a real concern for local farmers because Mexico is the biggest lime producer in the world s uccignat said. ut more importantly their limes are susceptible to citrus canker and other diseases. any local family farms and our livelihoods are depending on the right decision being made by the overnment about this. Citrus Australia CEO Nathan Hancock was another to voice his disproval of the potential limes importation revealing his biggest current concern is the lack of a scientific enquiry around Mexico’s recent citrus canker outbreak.
Australia was only recently declared free from citrus canker following an outbreak in he said. he three year eradication program cost government more than million of which growers will contribute up to . million and the Australian industry is still recovering from the effects. It’s understood local lime farmers and representatives will look to further discuss the matter in the coming weeks and months with Queensland Agriculture Minister Keith Furner and Federal Agricultural Minister David Littleproud. D i d you k n ow ? Citrus canker has been described as a disease that affects citrus species because of a bacterium called X anthomonas axonopodis. This infection causes marks and lesions on the leaves stems and fruit of citrus trees including limes.

TMR ‘tied’ Council's hands in Byrnes Street upgrades has to come from TMR and the state member,” Cr Davies said. “Basically we were told, ‘ here’s the plans, you can’t say anything until its announced through the state member’. “We saw the plans and that was it, this is what your getting.” Cr Davies has agreed that there has been inadequate consultation between the public and the government bodies involved.

" There is nothing we can do now it is all in stone, it’s happening, the best we can do is say we will improve," he said. “Any statements about those works can’t come from us, it has to come from main roads – it is their project so anything we say, has to be approved by main roads. “All we can do is say hey this is happening… but anything that comes about the works has to come from TMR.”
CLEALL’S BUTCHERY THIS WEEK’S SPECIALS BY RHYS T HO MAS SEV ERAL members of the Mareeba community feel there has been little to no communication with residents over the recent controversial changes to Byrnes Street. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has begun construction on the installation of new wombat crossings in the main street of Mareeba, seemingly without any consultation with residents or business owners. The Mareeba Shire Council SC raffic Advisory Committee long advocated for changes to be done, particularly to the dangerous ost Office Centre crossing. After TMR agreed to upgrade the crossing they came back to MSC with plans to change the remaining existing crossings to wombat crossings, plus installing more along the street. Passionate community member Mladen Bosnic said he feels there has been no consultation with the community about the
changes to their own main street. “I don’t live in a vacuum, but I’ve never seen or heard of anything about the main street, it just happened,” he said. “The lights were always talked about to some degree, but the main street is an aberration at the moment. “With a wombat crossing people just herd there and then when they see a break in the traffic they cross. “I don’t agree with it, I don’t agree with the way it has been done.” Another concerned Mareeba resident took to Facebook over the past months questioning why MSC has had no communication with its ratepayers over the works on Byrnes Street. “I suspect that TMR and MSC have plans to change traffic flow conditions without any public consultation,” they wrote. “Surely we deserve to be consulted and allowed to have some rate payer input. “I refer to the incredible lack of contact with the public about street changes/ wombat cross-
ings and removal of car parking spaces. “I believe it is time for MSC to consult the ratepayer prior to making major street changes.” This view is shared by Mr Bosnic who believes that future decisions which impact a lot of people need more extensive consultation with the wider public. t’s a sad state of affairs if there was no consultation between council’s raffic Advisory Committee and TMR,” Mr Bosnic said. “Did TMR ride rough shot over them, it’s sad when council can’t have a say in what happens in their own main street. “The fact that a main street can cut through one of the major towns in the Mareeba Shire and council has no say over it whatsoever ust find that incredible. “It may be TMR’s road, but it’s council’s main street.” ead of SC’s raffic Advisory Committee, Kevin Davies said that TMR ‘ tied their hands’ with the main street crossing decisions.
“We wanted better safety on the ost Office Centre crossing so through the committee we were pushing to get something done,” Cr Davies said. “Main roads came back to us and said, yes we’ll do something and then they also came up with the other crossings.” Council was then informed of TMR' s decision for the upgrade of the numerous crossings on Byrnes Street but could not say yay or nay to the decision. “O nce the plans and the funding came through, that all

Public meeting to decide future of Memorial hall A PUBLIC meeting to determine the future of Yungaburra Memorial Hall will be held tomorrow night at the venue from 7.30pm. A recent online statement suggests the Tablelands Regional Council asset on Memorial ark off arrine oad is currently rarely used, and in a state of disrepair.
It’s understood the memorial hall has experienced declining usage in recent years with only one booking made in 2020. Meeting facilitators YAI Management welcomes input from local clubs, associations, groups and individuals about the possible future use of the hall or another purpose-built facility to complement the sports field
recreation Shed and tennis court. C staff will provide an update about the future of the hall in due course after the meeting. “Make sure you and your associations have your say,” YAI management committee member Karyn Bliesner said. “Don’t miss your opportunity to be there.”
Students strike for investment of clean renewable energy ATHERTO N students have participated in a recent nationwide strike to demand the Morrison Government says no to funding dangerous gas and coal projects. Instead, students and other protestors rallied at the parklands next to Atherton’s Cook Street roundabout for the investment of clean renewable energy, secure jobs and First Nations solutions to protect the country.
The recent strike was the biggest climate protest since CO V ID, with groups of people in capital cities, regional centres and country towns all exercising their right to make a peaceful statement. The day was organised by the School Strike 4 Climate network, with support from First Nations communities, unions, parents, and everyday Australians. “The Morrison Government

Knuth pushes North Johnson transfer project
Main Street Real Estate’s Daimin Kochi and Atherton Fire officer Jason Ryan have reminded landlords across the Far North to update their fire alarms ahead of next year’s January 1 deadline.
East Barron farmer Case Schoorl joined former Atherton Shire Council mayor Jim Chapman, Tablelands Regional Council mayor Rod Marti, Shane Knuth MP and Bob Katter MP to discuss the need for a Tablelands water assessment to immediately begin.
HILL Member Shane Knuth has continued his push for long term water security in the region declaring he wants a recently confirmed water assessment for the Tablelands to start immediately. Flanked by Federal member Bob Katter on the Tinnaburra Boat ramp near Yungaburra Mr Knuth told The Express it’s pointless to wait until next year when the assessment is expected to get underway. “We have received $3M for a water assessment to be done on the Tablelands and the North Johnstone Transfer forms part of that assessment,” Mr Knuth said. “We’ll be pursuing this project to be fast tracked; I know there is a timeframe of early 2022, (but) we feel that’s not good enough. “That’s too long to wait; I have spoken to the QLD Minister for Water Glenn Butcher about this and he’s not ruling it out. “What this does mean for water security on the Tablelands is a scheme that was supposed to have been con-
structed. “It’s an approved scheme, and it was designed back when Tinaroo was constructed. It was supposed to have been put in, but hasn’t been, so we’re only trying to finish off what should have been put in place.” Mr Knuth and Federal MP Bob Katter have been strong advocates of the North Johnstone Transfer project as have local irrigators and past and present members of the Tablelands Regional Council. NORTH JOHNSTONE TRANSFER – A SNAPSHOT • When Tinaroo Dam was constructed, it was recognised at the time that the dam would not meet future water demands, so the North Johnstone Transfer project was designed as a means of increasing water supply to Tablelands farmers. • The project is designed to take water during flood periods and transfer, by pipe, from the North Johnstone into the Barron River. When the North Johnstone River is back to its original environmental
flow the gates shut off. • It is believed that the estimated cost in the original design would be around $7080M. This will vary if it is revised. • This is an environmentally friendly water source. In other words, it is not another dam - it is a pipeline supply, underground, transferring water to top up Tinaroo Dam. • The project will ensure water stability and reliability all year round to benefit the agricultural industry and recreational users. • The project is a no-brainer and should have been built decades ago, however successive State Governments have shown a distinct lack of desire to build any water security infrastructure in the state. • However, progress has been made and the North Johnstone Transfer is now on the State Government’s radar and will be investigated thoroughly as part of the recently announced $3M State Government water assessment plan taking place on the Tablelands.
Landlords encouraged to update fire alarms ahead of looming legislation BY MICHAEL WARREN A LOCAL station fire officer has issued a timely reminder to landlords to update their fire alarms ahead of legislation that could prevent them from renting residential properties to tenants if they fail to comply with next year’s January deadline. Under the legislation Fire and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan said from January 1 next year rental properties would be required to have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, in hallways and on every level. If property owners fail to meet that deadline they face the real risk of being legally unable to rent their property, whether it’s a unit or house, until they fulfil the required obligations. “The law applies when new leases are commenced or an existing lease is extended, but we urge all property owners to transition to the new safer alarms as soon as possible,” the Minister said. “It’s simple - smoke alarms save lives and interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms are the safest option available. “This is about landlords putting the safety of their tenants first while also protecting their

The standout amongst
all these gins was the Navy Strength as it was also awarded Gin of the Year and Best in Show by Category “It’s awe inspiring that we can get a broad swash of products that kind of recognition,” Mark said. “We put as much passion and love into every product so there' s no reason why they, at some point, become a rockstar.” This was not enough for the local distillery however as they also took out World’s Best Pot Still for Iridium Rum at the World Rum Awards, the third consecutive award for this rum. In both 2019 and 2020 Iridium was the style winner before now being awarded best pot still in 2021. “It’s an interesting award to win and then to consistently

Training prevents stroke incident IT’S the best ultimate outcome for community health – delivering training to the public about a potential health issue, who then use their newfound knowledge in a potentially life-threatening situation. That’s what exactly what happened to Mareeba Hospital Clinical Nurse Michelle Sutherland and Mareeba Men’s Shed vice president ent uffield. Ms Sutherland delivered training about being aware of the signs of stroke at the Mareeba Men’s Shed and just four days later Kent recognised those very signs in his wife. “My wife was cleaning the car and I saw her in the corridor and I knew something was wrong,” Kent explained. “She was very agitated; her speech was slurred and I was trying to calm her down.” “She told me her arm felt heavy, and I thought, ‘ that’s it’ and I rang an ambulance. “Normally I would have driven her to the hospital, but I had heard Michelle’s talk about stroke and she said call an ambulance sooner rather than later.” Fortunately, Kent’s wife has made a full recovery after getting checked out in the Mareeba Hospital emergency department. “This is actually what we strive for in all our community presentations and it’s not unusual for us to hear this sort of

feedback. But it is incredibly satisfying,” Ms Sutherland explained said. “It’s really the reason why we do this training. It gives people the confidence to handle a situation that they might never have encountered before. Stories like this really make health promotion worthwhile.” “Mareeba community health has been partnering with the Mareeba Men’s Shed to present monthly health promotion and education sessions. GO ING from one of many to becoming one of none, Joe Guy’s story is unlike any other in the entire country living off the land, his wits and his love for horses. From a street kid growing up in Sydney to becoming an accomplished artist recording several albums, a playwright, musterer and clinician Joe has done it all. With the sole purpose of living his life in mind, 5 2 yearold Joe has spent all of his life
rst A NEW monument will be erected outside of the Atherton RSL after they successfully applied for and were awarded a grant from the Australian Government. The monument will be erect-
on the road and on the back of a horse, traveling the world breaking in some of the toughest horses, many to be thought untamable. Joe stopped over in Mareeba last week and put the call out searching for another horse to help him in his journey. Always preferring to take in horses that are going to be shot or given away, Joe takes them and gives their life purpose again before finding them bet ter homes. “These are all rescue horses, I only take horses that people
don’t want that they say are going to get shot that I can save and rehabilitate then find them a home at the end of the day,” he said. “I’m looking for a horse that nobody wants, something they love that could be saved. “If its unbroken I break it in, it takes me about seven days 10 days and I should be heading across country.” To get into contact with Joe and help him in his search for a horse head to his website at www.longrideroneofnone.com

their Service’ grant, providing the Atherton RSL with $97,200 to erect the new statue. Atherton RSL Community Club Grants Coordinator Darren Hughes was extremely pleased to be able to secure this grant for
the new monument. “All of us here at the Atherton RSL Club are looking eagerly to having this monument completed as it will be a piece of history in the making,” he said. “Since the last statues were
erected back after World War I, this will be a breath of fresh air in town.” The brass statue will depict an Australian soldier dressed in full battle gear, facing the front and entrance to the RSL.
ARO UND 120 brigade members including a strong contingent from the Tablelands attended the recent Northern Rural Fire Service Qld V olunteer Summit in Cairns. The overriding objective of the summit was for attendees to share experiences and knowledge with members from Kuranda, Speewah, Koah, Davies Creek, Fassio Rd and Tinaroo coming away with learnings about indigenous collaboration, mental health awareness, data capture aerial firefighting and drones. Another feature of the seminar was the RFBAQ – Q uikcorp innovation platform. As firefighters we choose to undertake activities that are dangerous, and this platform was created to ensure that more of us go home and fewer of us develop ongoing illnesses,” spokesperson Baz Child explained. “The platform is the catalyst for a conversation that will happen across Queensland over the next several months. “Brigade members who went over the platform at the summit were incredibly happy with what the RFBAQ are trying to do to increase crew safety.” Locals interested in seeing the innovation platform while it is still in Far North Queensland can do so from today at the Rotary FNQ Field Days.

CO MMUNITY members gather at Muluridji Park in Mareeba last Wednesday as Mulungu
Aboriginal Corporation joined with Ngoonbi Community Services Indigenous Corporation to
deliver a special suicide awareness workshop. The workshop was conduct-
ed to open up the conversation around mental health and suicide, with the aim to understand what the community needs and get relevant organisations and authorities on board. Mulungu CEO Gail Wason put forward the fact that Mareeba is one of the highest towns in Australia for suicide. “It’s a sad fact but Mareeba is one of 12 communities across Australia that has an issue with suicide, we’re one of the 12 highest communities for suicide,” she said. “The Government invited us to invite someone to take on the funding so that we can find out how do we help our mob? . “Particularly our young ones, how do we help them, how do we deal with this and how can we make it better. “If we can come out with some good answers about what we want in the future, that’s when we will get funding to address these issues.” Ngoonbi CEO Glenis Grogan echoed Mrs Wason’s thoughts and believes that the best way to address this issue, is together. “Together with Ngoonbi, Mulungu and the Mareeba community we will work together to identify what is it that Mareeba needs going forward,” she said. Another workshop will be held in June by Mulungu and Ngoonbi with more community discussion with police and local council in the books moving forward.

Art on the Barron painted a success A HO ST of artists from across ueensland flocked to areeba last week as the inaugural Art on the Barron workshop opened last Monday, running the entirety of last week. The workshop had local and interstate artists, young and old taking a page from some of the most respected and experienced artists in Australia. Artists were able to work with their tutors in depth learning new skills and adding them to their ever-growing repertoire. Merilyn Holmes from the Mareeba Art Society said it was a fantastic week and all of the artists learnt took home something new. “We were painting up a storm, there were no complaints about the workshop,” she said. “Everyone has learned something, even some people that have been painting for a fair while have learned something new. “It was a happy atmosphere
with lots of fun.” Kuranda artist Alenka Wood was e tremely satisfied with the workshop and how the tutors ran them, catering to everyone’s needs and skill levels. “I’ve learned so much and had a great time, Penelope (one of the tutors) was amaz ing she knows so much,” she said. “She is very adaptive, she realised that some of us had never been to a workshop and so she took us right back and went through it step by step. “It was very inclusive and nobody was left behind.” Another standout from the workshop week was the dinners that was provided as many artists expressed their satisfaction and gratitude for the meals provided. The workshop ended last Friday in the form of an art exhibition where all of the artworks done during the week was put on display for the wider public to see and admire.

Lights, camera, action for northern children BY MICHAEL WARREN AFTER a tough 12 months brought on by the lingering impacts of CO V ID the heartbeat and main meeting place of a small Tablelands town has recently experienced its best patronage in a long, long time. The iconic Ravenshoe Hotel, the glue of the small community, remained open during CO V ID and still delivered drinks and meals to locals during stages of the pandemic. Months on the Hotel and the town itself is starting to blossom
once again. “How exciting for Ravenshoe to see our town coming alive after all the restrictions due to CO V ID,” hotel spokesperson Wendy Stanford said in a recent online statement. “(It was) so lovely to see the Club hotel open (on the weekend) and now the Popular café ; it was awesome on Sunday. “We were fully booked and could direct travelling guests to our beautiful town to the Popular Cafe and Country Mile Café . “The Ravenshoe Hotel management is so very proud of our
dedicated team who worked extremely hard during Covid to deliver meals and alcohol when that was our only option. “Wayne and Wendy wish to personally thank our dedicated staff and the community for their invaluable support during these difficult times it is very much appreciated.” In other positive town news the popular Ravenshoe Bakery and Country ile caf coffee shop continue to trade as normal is the O ctopi Garden sanctuary and other resilient businesses throughout the town.
THE Northern Gulf Management Group has teamed up with local children to take part in the Heywire Paddock To Plate Film Festival this year. Thus far the group of 12 Gulf Youth’s have published three videos talking about local barramundi, chicken and lamb farms. Producer and Mentor for the Lamb video Kathy Rowling said the youth worked hard leading up to the final production, taking time out of their holidays to complete the project.
“The Gulf Youth in Ag team completed a in film making course with James Leech in the September 2020 school holidays,” she said. “The students split into three groups of four and each group worked with mentors like myself, V ickie Mylrea and Dan Wingett and Local farming enterprises Hillbillie Heaven, Stockade Farm and Barron River Barramundi. “Students also completed filming at ssence hole Foods and Barramundi Gardens.” Kathy said that the key
messages behind the YouTube videos are knowing the story of your food, buying local means fresher and that healthier food can have less road miles. The Heywire Youth Innovation Grant funded the local group and film maker James Leech donated time to teach the children basic videography skills. Small town baking queen BY ELLIE F INK Emily Curcio is just an average school girl from Mareeba State High School (MSHS) with a huge talent for baking. Her inspiration was not Adriano Z umbo, but the cake store down the road. Her love for Teez e Cakes has inspired two of her greatest and favourite creations, a rainbow dripping cake and a Jack Daniel’s cake. Emily started her business “Emily’s Creations” last year during the school holidays after spending most of her life baking with her mum Jennifer. She said that her business was a hit almost immediately, especially when she started going to the Mareeba arkets and donating profits to local charities. “My mum asked me who I would like to donate to and I wanted to do an animal related one because I love animals, so I chose to donate a lot to the Mareeba Animal Refuge,” she said. “Things started getting bigger when I started donating to them and they asked me if I wanted to do a cupcake drive. “Sandy from the Animal Refuge also donates eggs sometimes but otherwise set aside some of my profit from the markets to pay for all the ingredients.” Emily is currently hosting a cupcake drive in support of the Mareeba Animal Refuge. orms that can be filled out at he Seconds shop areeba Hospital, Fantasy Tails, V ets in IGA and 1st Concept Salon in Mareeba.

THE Herberton Lioness Club has joined many of its sisters in combining with their associated Lions Club officially becoming the Herberton Lioness Lions Club after their charter meeting last Wednesday. The decision was passed down last year that all Lioness Clubs must disband and no longer operate under the Lioness banner. This decision was met with pushback by many of the clubs who had built up a significant following and membership base over the years. The Herberton Lioness Club was made up of eight members, and all eight have decided to join the Herberton Lions Club. They will continue to operate as they have now just under the name of the Herberton Lioness Lions Club.

Members of The Great Wheelbarrow Race team Dad’s Army have used their hard raised funds to provide specialised equipment for the Mareeba Hospital. O ver $5000 was raised by Dad’s Army through numerous fundraising efforts such as boards which the team did many of. The money raised was then used to purchase two shifty mobility chairs and one viking walker for workers at the Mareeba Hospital to utilise. This equipment is mainly used by nurses in the difficult task of moving incapacitated patients during recovery from various procedures while the viking
walker is used for rehabilitation. Member of Dad’s Army Peter Gerdes said he was delighted to be able to present the hospital with this equipment that is in high demand. “The Dad’s Army team is really proud to be able to make the money for The Great Wheelbarrow Race and to donate it to the Mareeba Hospital,” he said. “We select a charity and we fundraise for them we’ve done the Mareeba Hospital for the past three years. “We were told that they (Mareeba Hospital) had a problem, and they needed these chairs specifically to help the nurses. SENIORS MENU INCLUDING DESSERT: $14.90 REGULAR MENU AVAILABLE!
This is the opening production of the 2021 season for Atherton Performing Arts. The script tells the poignant story of the life journey of two close friends, Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, told through their letters to each other. These letters follow them from children’s birthdays on through the very different paths they follow over years. Both characters come from privileged backgrounds, but it is clear over the course of the play that money does not provide all the answers to life’s challenges. The production opened at the Silo Road Theatre last weekend, eliciting plenty of laughs and just a few tears from the audience. Written by A.R. Gurney, “Love Letters” has captivated audiences around the world with its insight into love and life across time. This particular incarnation of the script is being brought to life by Kirsty V eron and Peter Whalley-Thompson, two relatively recent residents of the Tablelands. Performing as Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, Peter said “This show is a unique challenge to an actor. The entire show is constructed by the letters these two star-crossed lov-
ers write to each other. We have to make their story come alive without any of the usual theatrical tricks, purely with our voices. It’s been a wonderful experience to inhabit the character this way.” t has been a very different rehears al process from anything else in my experience”, said Kirsty V eron, who plays Melissa. “We did all the groundwork ourselves, but Z oom has made it possible for us to tap into the experience of an excellent director, Rod Wissler, who is based in Brisbane. Rod has directed several professional theatre companies in Queensland, including New Moon and TN Theatre Companies. Most recently, Rod was the Executive Dean of the Creative Arts program at QUT. His input into a play for voices has been invaluable.” There are o n l y t w o m o r e p e r f o r m a n c e s - this weekend on Friday 28th May @ 7.30pm and Saturday th ay . pm. Toogoolawah Stud Brangus breeder, Tammie Robinson of Three Hearts Brangus Stud judged the stud and commercial young judges and paraders competition on Sunday, and was extremely impressed with what she saw. She said 85 out of 85 of the students in attendance were great kids and she believed the future of the beef industry looked to be in good hands. Ms Robinson said she thoroughly enjoyed watching the

“Hillview” sets new standard at auction
BY S ALLY T U RLEY
UPPER Barron freehold property “Hillview” established a new high of $28,730.30/ hectare (11,625/ acre) for graz ing/ dry-farming country when it sold bare at auction on behalf of Les and V era Toomey, at the Atherton International Club last Thursday. Purchasers Laura and Bruce Nicholls arrived from the Gulf for the sale and were very pleased to be the successful bidders in a room full of competition on the day. They have been managing “Magowra” Station near Normanton for the last 4 years. Mrs Nicholls said they really had no idea of how the auction would go, but were reasonably happy with the final price of $1,860,000. She said their two children, currently away at boarding school had not yet seen the
place and would be very excited by the news. After being introduced by Elders Rural Property Specialist, Chris Atkinson, the auction opened with a $1.5 million bid and quickly rose to $1.8 million before dropping to $10,000 bids and peaking at $1.86 m illion. O nce auctioneer and manager of the Elders Mareeba branch, Mark Peters established the property was on the market, the bidding stalled and though the gallery of buyers were given what must have seemed to Laura and Bruce Nicholls, like an age to reconsider, they failed to up the ante. O riginally from cattle country near Clermont, Central Queensland, Mr Nicholls said they would be capitaliz ing on Hillview' s reputation for turning off good quality steers by graz ing cattle on the block, and would be building a house there eventually.

Featuring Barron River and highway frontage and located less than 12 km from Atherton, the 64.74ha (160 acre) property, which is on 2 titles with a spring fed creek and a bore, has been held by the Toomey family for generations. Boasting rich, arable, deep red soils improved with the classic mix of Brachiaria, Setaria and Glycine legumes, the property is ideally suited to fattening cattle or could be adapted to growing crops or plantations of trees. It is fenced into 5 paddocks and has an existing set of yards. While it was a painful decision for the Toomeys to let the property go, they said they would look forward to a new era for the block under the care of its purchasers and wished them all the best with their future ventures.

Mr Toms said its on- road crews experience a nearmiss anywhere f rom once a year, up to 10 or more times. “ We’ re currently seeing drive rs not slowing down,

Co u n c i l n e e d s t o c o n s u lt w ith Ra t e p a y e r s TH E RE is a serious issue arising f rom the remova l of the weig ht limit on the newly rebuilt O ld Barron Bridg e. H eavy ve hicles including semi trailers are currently using this route. This is also the pref erred access to Mareeba f or other motorists and the road isn’ t capable of handling the increased tra c. I ref er to heavy ve hicles coming throug h Mareeba vi a A nza c A ve / H erberton St / Constance St/ L loyd St then back on the road north at the Byrnes St L loyd St round about. The approach to the né w / old bridg e f rom the A nza c A v side is too sharp f or semi trailers to neg otiate without entering the opposite lane and the H erberton St / Constance St intersection has no dedicated turning lane and
has had serious accidents there eve n bef ore this incredi le increase in tra c. n accident waiting to happen. I can’ t blame them as they are not happy with the situation deve loping with the congestion created y the tra c lig hts and g eneral chang es happening in Byrnes St. I ref er to the incredible lack of contact with the public about street chang es/ wombat crossing s and remova l of car parki ng spaces. I believe it is time f or MSC to consult the rate payers prior to maki ng major street chang es. I f or one would be happy to o er my time free of any cost and I believe there are others with similar vi ews as F B has shown, to have reg ular meeting s with the MSC tra c advisory committee if indeed there is such a g roup. Y ou mig ht accuse me of sto ing the fires. ell that s because in the last major war they were prepared to g ive North Queensland to the enemy, Ja pan. Easy no-knead bread Ingredients
Method
1 package active dry yeast
1. Combine yeast and warm water in a large bowl. 2. Using a wooden spoon add in 1 cup of the flour and then the salt and mix until combined. Stir in the rest of the flour, one cup at a time, until completely incorporated. 3. Cover with plastic wrap or a lid that is not shut completely. Allow to rise for 1 hour. 4. Do not punch down the dough. Lightly oil the bottom of a cast iron skillet and srinkle a good amount of flour on top of the dough and then cover hands with flour. Take all of the dough and shape into a disk. 5. Place in the skillet, cover loosely with a towel, and allow to rise for another 30 minutes and preheat the oven to 180ºC. 6. Drizzle a little more oil over the top of the bread, and slash the dough with a knife creating an X. Sprinkle with coarse salt and rosemary leaves. 7. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is a deep brown color.

Tom, Tracey, Michelle, Amy, Kristy and families wish to thank the numerous friends, relatives, neighbours, and others who have so strongly supported them throughout Karen’s illness and passing. There are too many people and groups to personally thank and respond to, those who sent cards, flowers, messages, food, attended Karen’s service, and funeral wake; to make them truly memorable, and all who were generally there for and supported the family. Special appreciation to the Highly Strung Ukulele group for providing fitting musical tributes. Karen has had expert medical care throughout her illness, but she specifically wanted to thank Dr Sabine from the Mareeba Medical Centre who went above and beyond the call of duty in the care she provided to Karen. Also, the Blue Care nurses who attended Karen at home, right up to her passing. The Queensland Police Service for the respect shown to Karen on her last journey, the Lions and Lioness Clubs for their honouring Karen’s life. “We are very appreciative of Mareeba Toyota donating $1000 to the girls to help them go away,” Mrs Campman said. “It’s awesome without it we wouldn’t have been able to take the girls down, every little bit helps.” Sales Manager at Mareeba
Toyota Andrew Ford was happy to support Mareeba Netball and give the girls a chance to play outside of their current competition. “We’re just happy to see kids get selected in teams, go away an compete against other teams,” he said.
“I loved going away to play sports when I was a kid, sports are good for every kid, it' s a good way to either meet new people or have a look outside the bubble. “It’s all about meeting new people, meeting new teammates and competing against a different quality of players.”

A SMALL Tableland barefoot waterskiing club has shown that quality is better than quantity after four of their skiers became division champions after the recent QLD State Title Series. The series was held in Canungra in southern Queensland at the start of May with Katina
Davis, Darren Rogers, Lindsie Jack and Mark Mulford of Northern Region Barefoot Water Ski Club all coming back division champions. Katina took out the Senior Women’s division, Darren the Masters Men’s champion, Lindsie the Junior Girls champion
t h e r e c e n t Q LD
and Mark the Sub Junior Boys Champion O nly being a small club running out of Tinaroo, having four out of four division champions is welcome news to club president and champion skier, Katina Davis. “In the past we’ve had less
skiers go to states, so this is the first time we’ve had four skiers at states,” she said. “We’re only a tiny club and slowly building so it was awesome to take four skiers and those four skiers coming away as champions in their divisions. “We we’re very happy with that, you don’t just go there to come home with a trophy to go to perform your best.” Several of the skiers not only beat out their competitors but themselves, securing new personal bests. Unlike other clubs that take wintertime off due to the cold weather, Katina and the skiers in the Northern Regional Barefoot Water Ski Club use this time to train and hone their skills before competition time. “We ski through winter to train and to learn, so come summer we can put it all together,” Katina said. To support the small growing club and keep track of their exploits search them up on Facebook and let them know your rooting for them.

Bulls Masters light up Morrow Park MO RRO W Park in Atherton was the place to be last Friday as the Bulls Masters and local A-grade cricket players went head-to-head in an exhibition match. The match was played between local A-graders across the region and the Bulls Masters team comprised of some of Australia’s best players and local up and com-
ing cricketers. Atherton Cricket Club president Tony Potts said the day was enjoyed by everyone involved from the players right down to the spectators. “The day was excellent, it was the best day we’ve had,” he said. “It was a good crowd considering it
was Friday, a good crowd and good people. “Everyone loved it, we had a dinner on Thursday night and we didn’t get one bad comment.” The Atherton Invitational team won the match much to the delight of local spectators.
An e l e v a t e d Z e m e k i s Hu n t e r s h o o t i n g p u r e . A 4- point haul by Z emekis Hunter created excitement on and around the basketball court last Thursday evening. The Stingray’s shooting guard’s shot was pure and true wasting no time with mere dribbling, the opposing team ed evils were finally on the wrong side of a long-range barrage. The Devils had a strong team loaded with defensive guards in Ricaydan Wason and Z ayd yrte a as well as fleet footed forwards in Craig Farley and Z ac Myrtez a.
Jerome Gully was absent due to representative commitments, and in his absence young Hunter was pushed into the lead scoring role. In all, a miraculous eleven three-pointers from Z emekis. The best of which was over an outstretched Craig Farley hand, which ended with the defender acknowledging the shot and the shooter. In the end 91 to 73, with the Rays taking the spoils and Thursday 20 May 2021 will be long remembered as Z emekis’s day.
