New studs bring more breeds
TWO new studs are taking part in the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day for the first time in 2024 – helping to take the event to a record 12 breeds.
Cherryburn Gelbviehs and Hilltop Droughtmasters and Millstream Mini Herefords will welcome visitors for the first time this year.
14 studs will take part in 2024 – with the event reverting to its traditional one-day format on Sunday 18 August.
The extra breeds reinforce the reputation that the Atherton Tablelands is the leading beef seedstock nursery in northern Australia.
While the past 12 months has seen the beef cattle industry endure a reality check following record prices in 2022, it is also the ideal time to invest in
genetics to improve your herds as bull prices, too, are much more affordable. It’s worth noting, the current softness in the beef cattle market has been exacerbated by a failed autumn in south-east Australia (and associated loss of confidence).
However, the mid and long-term outlook is extremely positive. Many industry watchers are predicting a strong recovery in prices next year and one which will be sustained for a number of years following.
This confidence is being driven by herd rebuilding underway in key beef producing countries of the United States and Brazil – and expected recover in Australian beef exports to China.
The US cow herd, decimated by drought, is at a 50-year low but with improved seasons in some parts of the country the herd rebuild is underway.
As a result America’s ability to compete with Australia in key export markets has been impacted – as highlighted by record exports in recent months of Aussie beef (and lamb) to the US itself.
As producers travel around studs during the Open Day it’s well worth remembering that the genetics in which you invest in 2024 will have their payday two years later, when the industry pundits are predicting a strong recovery in prices.
Better bulls not only produce better beef in your steers but also are essential in improving the performance and profitability of females.

PROUD TO SUPPORT THE 2024 BETTER BEEF DAY
EULUMA DROUGHTMASTER STUD - FOUNDED
This year come and see the future sires and females at Mareeba Saleyards
DROUGHTMASTER, Australia`s own beef breed, created from adversity by pioneering pastoralists.
Gordon Rasmussen`s property, “Euluma” overlooks the rolling hills at Julatten at the top of the Great Dividing Range, 56km North East of Mareeba.
“Euluma” was founded in 1963 by his late father Jack, just missing out from becoming a foundation stud of the Droughtmaster breed, at the time using some notable sires like Cherokee Cody, Woondoo Commander, Mungalla Alistair, Kengoon Afro Kaiser, etc.
Current sires are Lamont Viagra, Brigalow Park Zinc, Maunsell Park King Kong, Euluma 1006 and Euluma Bailey in single sire herds using a bull to cow ratio of 1:55.
The bulls are prepared on property at “Euluma” and are sold to both returned and new cliental. As a general rule the
better quality heifers are selected to replace the stud`s aged breeders and to other beef producers wanting quality replacement breeders.
As a stud breeder, I am a seed stock producer, I aim to provide to the commercial beef cattle producer with bulls and females that not only SURVIVE, BUT THRIVE with as little inputs as possible and produce the best beef possible in our harsh climate.
The “Euluma” Droughtmaster line has evolved over 61 years of meticulous selection to now provide functional, practical beef cattle, highly adaptable to
the sub tropical and tropical Australian environment.
At “Euluma” the important traits selected are fertility, calving ease, maternal instincts, weight gain, docility, parasite resistance, environmental adaptability and meat quality.
“Euluma” mission statement is to breed the perfect “BEEF MACHINE” for the Northern and Central Australian commercial beef industry.
At “Euluma Droughtmasters” we strive to breed quality genetics, irrespective of the season and grazing conditions.
Homozygous poll bulls in demand
Homozygous poll and packed with muscle – Tallangalook U04 is at work near Euramo after selling for $10,000.
Bulls guaranteed to take the horns out of commercial herds are increasingly in demand from buyers at Tallangalook.
DNA testing to determine the poll/ horn status of sale bulls is leading to greater awareness and interest in those which test with two poll genes (known as homozygous poll or PP). This genetic advantage ensures they will not sire any horned calves, regardless of the status of the dams joined.
Recent PP sales include Tallangalook U04 ($10,000) and Tallangalook Ultra U03 ($8000) - the first sons offered at Tallangalook by $32,000 sire Rosevale Reunion R130.
Tallangalook principal Nick Trompf said many of the stud’s customers were focused on PP bulls.
“Dehorning is a job nobody enjoys – and it can have severe negative impact on the calves as they can often be set back by the procedure,” Mr Trompf said.
“This month we had a repeat buyer of Shorthorn bulls at Tallangalook reach out to advise that the most recent bull his family had acquired had sired 66 calves in the past year out of horned Red Brahman cows –and every calf was poll.”
Tallangalook’s sale team at the 2024 Better Beef Open Days will feature a number of PP Santa Gertrudis and Shorthorn bulls, all semen tested and ready to work.
from Georgetown.
Value and surety at Tallangalook
BULLS that deliver the goods time and again for buyers are central to the breeding philosophy at Tallangalook Shorthorns and Santa Gertrudis.
Tallangalook bulls are backed by an array of tests, vaccinations, analysis, genetics and heritage including:
▪ Fertility - motility and morphology semen testing plus crush-side veterinary inspection
▪ Performance - raw data capture including birth weight, 200, 400 & 600-day weights as well as scanning for eye muscle, rib & rump fat and marbling
▪ Predictability - Genomics, Breedplan EBV or IGS analysis
▪ Health - vaccinations include vibrio, 3-day, tick fever, 7in1
▪ Genetics - elite sires are a feature in both Shorthorns and Santas
▪ Safety – temperament is nonnegotiable
▪ Value - bull prices start at $4000
▪ Heritage - in its 26th year, the stud is supported by an array of repeat clients
“Another advantage of using our bulls across tropical-based cow herds is the flexibility when selling their progeny,”
Tallangalook principal Nick Trompf said.
“This provides for more market options and improved cashflow – they can
be sold as weaners, feeder steers or carried through to bullocks. Butchers and feedlots love the meat quality from Shorthorns and Santa Gertrudis cattle.”
Tallangalook’s Santa Gertrudis sire battery includes Greenup Noble Q206 (EBV trait leader in 200/400 day weights and EMA), $32,000 Rosevale Reunion R130 (top 1% rib & rump fat and top 10% marbling) and meat machine Waco M720 (Tallangalook sons have grossed sales of more than $200,000) while the Shorthorns are headlined by Bayview Archer M15 (top 1% of breed for IGS All Purpose Index at +$151).
“This year we have also added Tallangalook Tyro T09 (winner of champion tropical bull at his only two show outings at Malanda and Tully) who combines the fertility traits his sire Maverick and comes from a cow family which has produced multiple sires at Rosevale,” Mr Trompf said.
While last year was a standout year with Tallangalook selling bulls up to $20,000, 2024 provides an ideal opportunity for buyers to capitalise on the change in the cattle market which has seen bull prices adjusted considerably.
A range of working age and younger stud Santa Gertrudis and Shorthorn plus composite bulls are for sale at Tallangalook, with prices starting from $4000.
SUPER SIRE’S STANDOUT YEAR
Greenup Noble Q206 at work again at Tallangalook in June 2024 after another summer joining season at co-owner Rosevale Santa Gertrudis. As always Noble remains in excellent condition – testament to his ultra-quiet temperament and easy-doing constitution.
Tallangalook’s leading Santa Gertrudis sire, Greenup Noble Q206, has had an extraordinary 12 months. Noble sired 76 natural calves across two studs – 35 at Rosevale near Jandowae (spring-summer
2023) and 41 at Tallangalook on the Tablelands (autumn-winter 2024). Other 2023 highlights saw a Noble son top the 2023 Rosevale bull sale and a Noble daughter at Tallangalook dominate the FNQ showring.
Santa Gertrudis, Shorthorn and composite bulls for sale. PLUS Noble Q206 on display. OPEN AT 86 Blake Rd, Barrine.
TOP SELLER
Noble son Rosevale Trafalgar T8 was top price at the annual sale at $37,500 (to Strathmore stud). Four sons at the sale averaged $20,625.
UNBEATEN
Noble daughter Tallangalook Scarlett T07 won supreme champion stud beef exhibit across 130 entries at Malanda Show (also champion tropical female at Tully Show).
Naturally polled, elite genetics and good temperament Murray Greys
GADGARRA Murray Grey Stud have been breeding quality purebred Murray Grey Cattle for more than twenty-five years.
We choose Murray Grey cattle because of their temperament, ease of calving, strong maternal traits, fertility, carcass quality and (because) they are naturally polled.
Over the years elite genetics have been carefully selected and sourced from Murray Grey Studs from all over Australia from as far away as Western and South Australia, NSW and Tasmania.
Our strong focus on structure, maternal traits, fertility, high milk figures, low birth weights as well as true to type of the
breed while maintaining carcass traits that have industry relevance has never wavered.
Local cattle breeders have been extremely happy with the hybrid vigour our bulls have put into their calves from breeds such as Droughtmasters, Brahman, Angus, British Whites, Composite and Dairy cows. Almost all of them have become return buyers.
It is our belief at Gadgarra Murray Grey Stud that strong cow families are the foundation to breeding quality bulls and females.
We are extremely proud to place on display the progeny from our two reference sires Onward Rawhide purchased from Onward Murray Grey
Stud NSW and Monterey Snowstorm top price Murray Grey bull at a prestigious Monterey Sale in WA. We were confident that they would complement our battery of matrons perfectly and they have delivered in spades.
There will be four bulls from our previous sire Glenliam Mister, (pictured above) ready to go out and work plus a few steers for sale on the day.
We welcome visitors to Gadgarra Murray Grey Stud on Sunday 18 August at RN 164 Gadgarra Road, Lake Eacham to see our wonderful breed of cattle for yourself.

Small cattle, big appeal
FROM small things, big things grow and that’s exactly what Scott and Rachael Bowden are achieving with the their herd of Miniature Herefords.
Starting in 2021 with two cows and a calf in the middle of the wet season, Millstream Miniature Herefords is now thriving on the Tablelands.
Miniature Herefords, known for their compact size and robust qualities, have found a perfect niche on the Bowden's farm. These pint-sized cattle offer high feed conversion rates and excellent meat quality, making them ideal for small-acre hobby farms, disability services support animals, cherished family pets and if you don’t get too attached, have great eating qualities!
The decision to venture into miniature cattle breeding was influenced by both their move to Millstream and the arrival of grandchildren, seeking animals that are easy to manage and safe for all ages.
The Miniature Herefords' calm temperament and manageable size make them not only practical for seasoned farmers but also an excellent introduction
Currently in the early stages of herd development, the Bowden’s are strategically focusing on retaining homebred heifers while planning to introduce an outcross bull in the near future. This careful breeding approach underscores their commitment to maintaining and improving upon the breed's renowned traits of hardiness, temperament, and meat quality.
Miniature Herefords trace their lineage back to pure Hereford stock and have been selectively bred since the 1970s, emphasizing adaptability to various climates and ease of care comparable to regular cattle. With their striking appearance and ability to carry more head per acre, these miniatures present an attractive alternative for farmers of all scales.
Investors, recognizing the breed's potential due to its limited herd numbers and commercial viability, are increasingly drawn to Millstream Miniature Herefords. The meat quality and yield of a Miniature Hereford is excellent, which makes them a commercial reality.
For those curious about sustainable farming practices or seeking a new
addition to their farm, Millstream Miniature Herefords promise not just a livestock choice, but a lifestyle commitment.
Scott and Rachael invite you to visit their farm and meet their miniatures firsthand at the Open Day on Sunday 18 August, located at 226 Jacaranda Drive, Millstream.
Quality, durable droughtmasters
A FAMILY operated stud since 2017, Hilltop Droughtmasters pride themselves on breeding a consistent line of quality Droughtmasters.
Their aim is to breed a durable herd of flatbacks with a strong focus on sound structure, muscle coverage, temperament, fertility and calving ease, with the ability to adapt to all climates.
Genetics for the founding herd have a strong Glenlands infusion through purchases from Waylanbar, Vitwood, Chilverton, Grandview and Waringle Droughtmasters.
Scott and Rachael Bowden for many years have bred commercial cattle and developed a good quality commercial Droughtmaster herd. This commercial success underscores their commitment to breeding cattle that excel not only in the show ring but also where it counts, on the market.
Emily's early involvement showing cattle through her school years and later, caretaking the Chilverton Droughtmaster Stud ignited her passion for cattle and the show ring. This experience was pivotal in inspiring the family to expand their commercial herd to a small, family-operated stud aimed at breeding cattle perfectly suited to Queensland's diverse climates.
What started with five registered cows and a bull from Chilverton, has now grown into a strong herd of approximately 80 stud and commercial breeders situated at Evelyn Central.
The Bowden’s have enjoyed premium prices for their weaner steers and commercial heifers through the saleyards, and their clients have been very pleased with the offspring of Hilltop bulls. A local butcher has purchased several of their bulls, being very happy with how the end product hangs up.
"We are very pleased with the consistency we have developed within our herd."
The Droughtmaster breed offers a range of advantages. They are known for their high reproductive rates, versatility, adaptability to various climates, good temperament, minimal handling requirements, efficient feed conversion, and the ability to produce superior crossbred offspring. These characteristics make them highly valued in cattle farming contexts.
Our family welcomes you to view a selection of cattle at 226 Jacaranda Drive, Millstream at the Open Day on Sunday 18 August.
Pinnacle Pocket Cattle – Senepol and Senepol Composites
PINNACLE Pocket was the first registered Senepol stud north of Rockhampton, established in 2006, and is the only registered Senepol stud in Far North Queensland.
The stud recently enjoyed success at Beef Australia 2024 in Rockhampton winning Grand Champion Senepol Female, the Breeder’s Group and Reserve Champion Senior Bull.
Stud Principal, Peter Spies said, “Whilst I was chuffed about the Grand Champion ribbon, I was more pleased winning the Breeders Group. It vindicates some of the tough decisions I have made by selling a core of Senepol females I bought down south in 2006-07 and selecting on fertility and starting from base Droughtmaster cattle, which I used to breed over a decade ago, and using select Purebred Senepol bulls to drive fertility. Whilst we breed purebred Senepol, we continue with breeding composites with Droughtmasters as well."
Based at Glen Allyn, east of Malanda –It is here we apply selection pressure on our breeders for fertility and insect resistance with high tick and buffalo fly pressure, nutrition and tropical heat/ humidity issues. Our Senepols are polled, slick-coated with large scrotal size and early maturity growth. We follow best-practice commercial husbandry. Early weaning, controlled mating and pregnancy testing with cows producing a calf every year. Our branding rate is typically over 90%.
We apply strong selection criteria to retained bulls and replacement heifers with emphasis on polledness, a tidy sheath, large scrotal size, slick coat, fertility, docility and structural correctness. In our females – early age to puberty is a must and cows get three months to get back in calf. It is this pressure on our breeders that drives fertility.
Senepols have been a fixed breed since the 1900s. They were developed from crossing a native Bos taurus breed from Senegal, North-West Africa with the English Red Poll on the island of St Croix in the Caribbean. They combine traits of heat tolerance and the ability to thrive on poor quality pasture with carcase quality, high fertility, feed efficiency, good temperament and Red Poll.
“To date, Senepols are the only breed available in Australia that are carriers of
the slick coat gene, identified by Dr Tim Olsen of the United States,” Mr Spies said.
“Smooth-coated animals are known to carry less tick burden in tick country, further improving the breeds' naturally high level of tick and buffalo fly resistance.”
With its sleek red coat and naturally polled head, the Senepol is still relatively new to Australia, but is used extensively in Brazil, South Africa and the southern United States, and has been used by Australian Agricultural Company in their composite breeding program since 1996 to produce their signature “1824” retail beef brand.
They have a significant ability to marble from an early age and their beef tenderness is ranked alongside the best British breeds.
Crossing with Senepols, increases hybrid vigour, lifts fertility, higher growth rates, increased muscling, better marbling and retail beef yield. However, Mr. Spies firmly believes the biggest driver of profit in the Northern Beef Industry is fertility, so Bulls need to have early scrotal development and high semen morphology to produce earlybreeding daughters.
An agricultural consultant in soil science and agronomy, Mr Spies uses a combination of conventional and regenerative practices to grow his Setaria, Brachiaria, Glycine and Shaw creeping Vigna legume pastures. This includes applied biology and good soil bacteria and incorporating legumes and
soil ameliorants for high weight gains, correct soil acidity, address the basalt soil's high iron and release phosphorous to improve the pastures growth and vigour, root development and disease resistance.
“We don't finish our bulls on any grains or silage, as we believe cattle need to thrive and grow in the environment they are destined to work in. Most graziers don't want a fat, bull, that takes time to let down. Ideally, a bull should have a head like an aristocrat, a back like a billiard table and a butt like a Rhino”.
That is our Pinnacle Pocket difference – our bulls are paddock-raised and sold out of the paddock to keep the cost down for buyers. Southern seedstock operations can't replicate our northern conditions to select for the tick, fly, nutrition, heat and humidity and southern imports struggle to adapt to our conditions. Southern operations cannot apply the same selection pressure and can go backwards in condition or take significant time to adapt.
Bulls are available for inspection throughout the year with the bulk of bulls rising two years of age in the spring/early summer of each year. Our cattle, bred for docility and fertility, are a pleasure to work with and we guarantee the fertility of our cattle.

Grassfed is key at Warrina
ESTABLISHED in 1987, Warrina’s selection criteria has focused on highly fertile, medium framed, docile, polled Droughtmasters suitable for all northern conditions and markets.
While concentrating on quality above quantity, Warrina Bulls area tropically adapted, easy doing, well-muscled cattle with tidy underlines.
As the Stud is located in the Wet Tropics, where conditions and climate are often extreme, replacement females are selected on stringent fertility performance and must be able to resist waves of Tick, Buffalo Fly and thrive in Tropical conditions while still producing Progeny capable of competing favourably against the best Cattle from Sub-Tropical and Temperate zones.
carry the best genetics.
Apart from selecting for superior physical and performance traits, we recongise that consistency comes from “Depth Of Breeding” and our breeders
Only the best of our male calves are kept for Sale Bulls which are mostly marketed privately, off grass, at 24 to 30 months.
We believe that this best provides
buyers with peace of mind of obtaining Bulls of high quality that are truly sound, ready for work and not overfed.
Peter Bauer and Julie Brotherton look forward to seeing you at Warrina, located at 66 Junction Road, Mungalli.
Delivering Droughtmasters that excel
THE Riverland Droughtmaster herd is backed by over 65 years of dedicated Droughtmaster breeding and production of stud and herd bulls.
The stud’s breeding programme is focused on structural soundness, fertility, performance, and docility, traits that directly influence the profitability of our clients’ cattle.
Environmentally adapted, the herd is bred to excel in a range of challenging conditions. They have proven they can handle harsher times and the droughts of Central and Western Queensland as well as the often-wet conditions of the Atherton Tablelands.
Preference is given to females that exhibit parasite resistance, calving ease, sound udders and good re breed rates, and we continue to put reproductive pressure on females with an annual pregnancy test and culling.
Bulls are required to have optimal scrotal size and motility and morphology at a young age to identify those that have early sexual maturity combined with good performance data. A thinner tropical hide and its associated light sheath is preferred. Riverland cattle are selected for a docile
temperament and have been for a long time.
As one of the most desired attributes of a purchased bull it makes for an easy move into their new herd and a safer working environment. Preference is for easy-doing, low maintenance cattle which in turn breed females with better conception rates and steers with improved performance.
“Our focus has always included commercially relevant traits in our stud cattle – growth, fat cover and weight for age.
"We invest in the best available genetics for our sires, seeking a balance of performance, fertility and carcass traits, and superior growth in a structurally sound package. This years’ display and sale cattle include the progeny of three new stud sires.
"Grass fed stud and herd bulls are fertility tested and are usually available throughout the year, with selected stud bulls offered at auction. Females are occasionally available by private treaty.
"We look forward to being part of the Better Beef Open Days, with stud breeders and replacement heifers on display, and heifers and bulls available for purchase on Sunday 18 August."
Fassifern’s focus on quality cattle
Fassifern Limousin and Droughtmaster Stud match individually selected bulls that will maximise and diversify our females’ full potential.
Although the key focus is to produce quality stud stock, the process of selecting breeding combinations is geared towards achieving the final product, an animal, to meet the requirements for a range of markets.
Our breeding program is strongly focused on docility, polledness, softness (fat), muscling, structure, growth and milk production. We pride ourselves in
performance recording for both herds and being part of Breed Plan for the Limousin herd. The majority of the Limousin breeding herd are French Pure or high-grade Limousins.
The Droughtmaster herd is primarily based on Glenlands and Warrina bloodlines, with the introduction of Minlacowie, Clonlara and Billabong AI sires.
Fassifern Droughtmasters also own two sires, Annandale Acres Canvas and Bryvonlea Richmond and look forward to the new calves due this coming season.
Cross breeding with Limousins increases hybrid vigour, resulting in higher growth rates, increased muscling, better dressing percentages and therefore, higher returns for producers. Composite Limousin/Droughtmaster bulls and females will be available in the future with breeding in progress.
The Pedersen Family look forward to welcoming visitors on Sunday 18 August, when the gates will open to view the quiet, quality cattle at Fassifern Limousin and Droughtmaster Stud as part of the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day.
View the cattle and meet stud principal, Brian Harriman from Reedybrook B Brahman Stud. Pictured is Tarramba True North, the bull purchased for $120,000 in 2023.
BAH the brand to buy for better beef
REEDYBROOK B Brahman Stud made headlines in 2023 purchasing top price bull, Tarramba True North 4664, at Rockhampton Brahman Week Sale 2023 for $120,000.
Stud principal Brian Harriman, is a third generation cattleman, born and bred at Reedybrook Station. The Harrimans are an established family around the Tablelands and multi generation ABBA members.
Having made significant and ongoing investments into stud cattle over the years, more than half a century of commitment and dedication is seen in the quality of the BAH branded cattle that Brian Harriman brings to the market in the Reedybrook B Brahman Stud.
Stud principal Brian Harriman has an unwavering focus on quality which manifests itself in the foundation herd and the quality of bulls currently in use.
"All our cattle are paddock ready, with genetic resistance to ticks and flies, suitable for harsh northern conditions."
The BAH brand came into being when Brian was in his early teens and old George Harriman (Brian’s grandfather) gave him some brahman cattle to start his herd.
Brian became a member of the ABBA with the breeder prefix ‘Reedybrook B’ and as the saying goes, ‘the rest is history’.
Reedybrook B Brahman Stud moved onto the Tablelands in 2019 and the stud now operates across two properties on the Tablelands and one on the East Palmerston, spanning 850 acres and a herd of approximately 550 head. A focus on quality manifests itself in the foundation herd and the quality of bulls and heifers currently in use. Little
expense is spared when purchasing stud stock and Reedybrook B Brahman Stud comprises some of the better known Brahman breeders including Ooline, NCC, Lanes Creek, Palmvale, Peter Tuxworth, Lancefield, Elmo and Fenech Brahmans to name a few. With AI capacity, the stud does implement AI programmes with purchased semen, which provides greater genetic diversity and flexibility.
Reedybrook B Brahman Stud offers registered bulls, herd bulls, commercial heifers and registered heifers for sale and with close proximity to the Tablelands and FNQ our stud is a great starting point for world class Brahman cattle.

Breeding Brahmans for performance, not fashion
DEBBIE Coleman has been principal of Yantee Creek Brahmans, for the past six years, since the passing of founder William Wallace in 2018.
As a passionate advocate of the breed, I am dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the breed.
Yantee Creek focuses on breeding for performance and preserving old bloodlines with a vision of big-framed animal with substantial bones and gentle temperament.
Currently, Yantee Creek Brahmans operates two small breeder herds - a red Brahman cattle currently joined to a noteworthy El Mariah old red stud
bull; and a grey Brahman herd currently joined to the impressive Rockstar 63.
A primary goal of Yantee Creek Brahmans is to breed polled cattle, without compromising bone, a highly sought-after trait among buyers. Recent progress has been made in achieving these objectives, and I have great satisfaction in seeing the herd evolve and improve over time.
Since relocating to near Malanda, wetter conditions have posed difficulties for calf rearing specially this last 18 months. However, Brahman cattle have a remarkable ability to acclimatise.
After three years at Malanda the herd is
adapting and on previous years even thriving. This year has been particularly challenging. The breed's natural tick resistance makes them well-suited to tropical conditions.
Despite the challenges, I remain committed to the breed and is excited to showcase the progress made at the upcoming open day.
Visitors can expect to see a display of younger cattle that exemplify the qualities and traits Yantee Creek Brahman Stud is dedicated to producing.
Debbie looks forward to seeing you at 468 Clarkes Track, Malanda on Sunday 18 August.
Gelbvieh breed joins open day
INTRODUCING a new stud to this year's Tablelands Better Beef Open Day, Cherryburn Gelbviehs. A selection of Cherryburn cattle will be on display at the Malanda Showgrounds on Sunday 18 August.
Cherryburn Gelbvieh’s was founded by Thomas Bewick at the age of 14, in 2007. Starting with the purchase of two Pittvale Stud Heifers, with some top quality semen, that was gifted to me by some leading studs to make a strong start in the breed.
After this came the purchase of another two females from Granite Gold Stud, in Stanthorpe in 2008 and a bull, Double J Cyril, from Guyra. Cyril was sired by Double J Zulu, who was named “The Best Bull in Australia in 2006” at BEEF Australia in Rockhampton.
The stud remained small for a while, however, only the best quality cattle have been kept. This laid a very good foundation of females, in consistency and quality in Type, Temperament, Structural soundness, easy doing ability, and their natural milking benefits. We continue to AI with the best quality semen available and we are also using our own bulls in herd.
Gelbvieh means Gold Catte and Originated in Germany in the early 1800s. They were bred as a triple purpose breed for Draft, Milk, and Meat. With the milk and meat traits continuing to present day. Gelbvieh are predominantly Polled with a smooth coat and are a solid red or black in colour. Cherryburn strives to produce easy doing, productive animals that will add value to your choice of Herd and Breed. Gelbvieh have the ability to cross over
any breed to produce an article with low birthweight, heavy weight for age, easy on the eyes, and ultimately increase your bottom line.
We look forward to seeing you all come to our open day at the Malanda Showgrounds and seeing for yourself what our herd is doing and can easily do for yours.

Beki Speckle Park – it’s the CARCASE that counts
BEKI Speckle Park look forward to showcasing their boutique herd as part of the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day.
On Sunday 18 August 2024, Beki will again display animals from their wider breeding program rather than just sale bulls.
When times are tough (and most people will agree that it has been a tough year for cattle producers on the Tablelands and beyond) the smart operators focus is on profitability. Speckle Parks are renowned for their excellent feed conversion and ability to thrive in a range of conditions – some say “superior output with less input”. These attributes coupled with superior high yielding carcases, soft flavoursome meat, fast growth rate, gentle temperament, high fertility and strong maternal attributes make Speckle Park the ideal choice in your beef herd, large or small.
In 2024, we will display some different Speckle Park bloodlines in our ET, AI and natural calves. We continue to strongly focus on temperament, animal health and welfare in our herd – quiet, happy and healthy cattle are productive cattle.

Contact us for a private inspection, especially if you are unable to make it to the open day.
We invite you to visit Beki on Sunday 18
August between 9am and 5pm and see our registered, pure and a small number of cross bred calves demonstrating how well Speckle Park offspring can do in FNQ.
Remember it is the CARCASE that counts!
Grey Poll genetics progress at Figtree
THE Figtree Poll Stud continues to progress its’ Poll Genetics. The latest stud sires are doing what were hoped in adding some thickness to the length and frame that we have in abundance.
The stud was established by Norm and Val Tuxworth who foresaw, earlier than most, the increased importance to the Cattle Industry of Polls. They spared no expense in investing in quality grey poll genetics from leading studs.
Ron and Jan Collier took over the stud after selling their New England holdings where they were large scale Angus breeders for the B3 market and now the stud is owned and operated by new owners, David and Maree Jones.
David and Maree purchased the stud
from Ron and Jan in July 2023.
They previously ran their owned successful cattle and sheep breeding operation of wool, mutton and beef west of Winton in Queensland.
We wish to continue breeding the same good poll genetics as the previous owners.
We have 14 rising three-year-old bulls with semen and morphology results.
We also have 19 rising two-year-old bulls, all for sale.
The Figtree bulls are prepared on the natural pasture and minimal rations of pallets. They are extremely quiet and easy to handle.
Our calves are ear notched at weaning time for DNA poll testing.
In the past reults have returned around 75% Homozygous Poll ( PcPc ). An outstanding result for a Poll Seedstock producer as they are.
Bulls are available all year for paddock sales and inspections are welcome anytime.
David and Maree look forward to welcoming you to ‘Figtree’ at 235 Turner Road, Tarzali on Sunday 18 August.
