Chalk art just one part of art festival MAREEBA Arts Festival will take place on October 7 at Arnold Park, Mareeba. There will be fun activities and demonstrations, music, arts market stalls, a chalk art mural and a chalk art freestyle zone. This free community event will kick off at 10am through to 3pm.

Kuranda street to get an upgrade Therwine Street will be revived under the Kuranda Infrastructure Program. Council this week approved the Redevelopment Project and is inviting expressions of Interest from suitably qualified contractors to take on the exciting development. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the overdue project will improve the streetscape and correct footpath deficiencies that have manifested over time as the village has evolved as a tourist destination and visitor numbers increased. The $1 million project will be funded through the Kuranda Infrastructure Program. “It is envisaged that calling for expressions of interest will attract qualified contractors and allow Council to develop an appropriate scope of works within the allocated budget,” Cr Gilmore said.

Helping feed those in need

By Rebecca Wallis

In a first for the Tablelands QITE has opened the doors to a food pantry store for people in need. The Community Pantry officially launched last Wednesday in Atherton and is a place for struggling families to buy discounted

food. “The idea behind it is for people in need who can’t buy groceries towards the end of pay day,” said QITE Tablelands Site Manager Keely Trout. “We buy from stores and sell at half price. Once a fortnight people can get a referral card and they come here and have a $10 limit

so they can get $10 worth of food.” The Federal Government-funded project is run by work-for-the-dole participants who also make environmentally-friendly bags for the pantry users. “It is something that there definitely is a need for,” said Ms Trout. “We see people all the

time asking about food vouchers and things like that and there are only so many things out there you can assist them with. Grocery bills are huge, especially if you’re trying to eat healthily.” The pantry sells non-perishable food items and any fruit and vegetables donated by farmers,

as well as bread donated by the local bakery. The Community Pantry is open every Wednesday between 9am and 4pm at 2/46 Main Street, Atherton. Anyone wanting to donate items to the pantry can drop them off on Wednesdays at the Pantry or into any QITE office.

NBN tower to go ahead despite objections

JOURNALIST Rebecca Wallis

A 40m telecommunications pole that will provide NBN internet access to 132 homes in Ravenshoe has been approved by Tablelands Regional Council despite objections by locals. Councillors voted last Thursday at their monthly meeting to approve the

facility with conditions although a number of nearby residents wrote to express their concerns over the health implications of having a tower so close to their homes and the visual impact it will have on them. One resident lives just 450m from the proposed

site of the tower at 29 Bew Road, Ravenshoe and is concerned about the effects of electromagnetic radiation emitting from the tower. But officers who assessed the application by NBN Co Ltd stated that the EME report complies with

planning scheme requirements. Concerns over the visual impact of the tower were taken into consideration and a condition of the approved application is that vegetated screening be implemented at the site. “It is considered that

provision of improved internet capacity would have social and economic public benefits for the local community to ensure that those ratepayers receive services comparable with their urban counterparts,” wrote Senior Planner Peter Pattison in his report.

“On that basis, it is considered that (on balance) the proposal can substantially comply with the scheme, subject to conditions. “It is therefore recommended that the application be approved subject to conditions.”

Thieves target older generation’s homes By Rebecca Wallis

The family of an elderly couple that had their home broken into in the early hours of last Tuesday in Mareeba want other pensioners in the town to be security savvy as they believe a group of indigenous youths are targeting older home owners. Delma and Irio De Rose were in bed asleep when a group of youths climbed a down pipe at their twostorey home and pushed through a screen on the

window before climbing in. “They then walked into my parent’s room and stole my Dad’s wallet out of his bedside draw,” said daughter Maria Martino. “Mum heard a noise and woke up to see someone with their face covered and a torch. She called out to my sister and the thieves ran out the front door which they had opened. They had also propped the screen door open with a pot plant. “They were all very shaken by this.” Mareeba Police tracked

down the thieves the next day, retrieving Mr De Rose’s wallet, although the money had been taken. Mrs Martino wants other elderly people in the area made more aware of what lengths some of these thieves will go to steal from local homes. “I’m telling this to create awareness to the fact that these low lives are targeting the elderly (and let’s face it Mareeba has their fair share of elderly people),” she said. “We need to make sure that the oldies have the cor-

rect security measures in place. “My parents thought due to the height of their home they would be fine. “It’s a costly exercise especially in large homes and it angers me that the people that made Australia are being treated this way. “Please look out for these precious people in our community.” Senior Constable Aleda Day from Mareeba Police said house break and enters are very common with thieves often gaining entry through an open or un-

locked door or window. She offers this advice: 1. Make it as difficult as possible for an offender to gain entry i.e. install and use key operated locks on doors and windows, don’t place keys under door mats or in obvious places. 2. Make it as difficult as possible for an offender to exit with your property i.e. use the key-operated locks on doors and windows, make sure alarms are functioning. 3. Make it as difficult as possible for an offender to want to steal your property

A-maizing festival! The revamped Maize Festival was a massive hit on Saturday night in Atherton and the crowds loved the return of the parade back to the main street. Locals lined the streets to grab lollies and cheer on the floats before enjoying the range of food on offer from Jack Street and have a go on the rides. Kianna Darcey was announced as the Emerg-

ing Ambassador with Ashlyn Condullus the Young Ambassador and Charity Ambassador. Overall Best Float – Disability Matters; Best School/Kindy/Daycare Float – St Joseph; Best Business Float – Jaks Salon; Best non-for- profit Float – Atherton Golf Club; Best non-motorised Float – Atherton BMX; Best Shop Window Display – Salvation Army Family Store.

i.e. engrave or microdot all items of value. Senior Constable Day also advises not to try and tackle an intruder yourself. “If you do hear an intruder in the home, don’t risk injury,” she said. “Dial triple zero (000) at the earliest opportunity, leave the house immediately and go to a neighbour or somewhere safe. “If you come home and find your home broken into, report it to police and do not touch anything. Forensic evidence can easily be destroyed.”

Other tips include: • If you have off street parking, use it. If possible, park behind locked gates or in a locked garage. • Remove temptation – always lock doors and close windows when your vehicle is unattended. • If you must leave valuables in your motor vehicle keep them out of sight. • For maximum protection, an engine immobiliser provides the most effective deterrent, however, it offers no protection if a thief has easy access to your keys.

Have your say on power bills Businesses sick of rising power costs have the chance to have their voices heard with just one day to go until survey results must be in. The Queensland Electricity Users Network is targeting the Mareeba Shire region in a first-of-

its-kind survey to ascertain the detrimental effects rising power prices is having on businesses. “We have received 160 responses to our online survey and have a target of 200 surveys by August 31,” said co-ordinator Jennifer Brownie. “We know

electricity costs are causing pain to a range of businesses but to argue the case for lower power bills we need to provide evidence of the stress levels to policy makers such as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC),” she said.

The ACCC is holding an inquiry into electricity supply and prices and must deliver a report to the treasurer by 27 September. The QEUN will provide a report to the ACCC on the findings of the Mareeba business survey. visit www.qeun.com.au

Celebrating Seniors Week By Rebecca Wallis

Over 200 people came together at the Mareeba International Club last Friday to enjoy tea, cakes and entertainment as part of the Seniors Week Morning Tea. Hosted by Mareeba Shire Council, the event is held annually to “celebrate the wonderful contribution seniors make”. “It’s marvelous,” said Mayor Tom Gilmore. “It gets people out of their homes for the day and mixing together. It’s just lovely.” The Auslan Signing choir, Saints Band and individual performers took to the stage to entertain the crowd between rounds of cake, sandwiches and cups

of tea and coffee. “It is our chance to thank our seniors for their great contribution they have made and continue to make in our community,” Cr Gilmore said. Mareeba Shire Council also held a presentation on Thursday, August 24 at the library as part of the Seniors Week celebrations giving advice to seniors about preventing falls and staying healthy and independent. The program was delivered by physiotherapists from Mareeba Hospital for seniors and people who work with seniors, providing information on exercises for strength, balance, flexibility and endurance as well as advice on reducing falls at home and risk assessment tools for professionals.

Battle of Kokoda 75th anniversary

Mareeba man’s hard fought war George Seres came from an ordinary farming family near Innisfail. But in 1941 he enlisted in the Citizen Military Forces and shortly after was posted to the 49th Australian Infantry Battalion, tasked with defending Port Moresby. He was in PNG until February 1943, and fought in the battle of Sanananda where the Japanese troops outnumbered Australians by five to one. He rarely spoke about what happened out there, but the horror that was the Battle of the Kokoda Trail was forever etched in his memory. The campaign consisted of a series of battles fought between July and November 1942 in what was then the Australian Territory of Papua. The Japanese objective was to seize Port Moresby by an overland advance from the north coast, following the Kokoda Track over the mountains of the Owen Stanley Range, as part of a strategy to isolate Australia from

the United States. Australian reinforcement was hampered by the logistical problems of supporting a force in isolated, mountainous, jungle terrain. There were few planes available for aerial resupply, and techniques for it were still primitive. 75 years ago George Seres was in the thick of what was arguably one of the most iconic campaigns in Australian military history. “The worst part was when he was in the Kokoda Trail,” said his daughter Irene who lives in Mareeba. “I asked him about it but he didn’t want to tell me anything.” After he returned to Australia George worked his own cane farm down in Innisfail before relocating to Mareeba and working for the local council. Every Anzac day he would don his medals and march proudly. Two years ago aged 96, George passed away, but his legacy lives on.

New Aged Care Home offers comfort and style

Eric’s loving life at Kewarra Beach

KEWARRA Aged Care has opened its doors and newest resident Eric couldn’t be happier. The brand new home is conveniently located at Kewarra Beach, next to Kewarra Retirement Village and can provide accommodation for more than 90 residents in comfort and style. Eric, one of the first residents to move in, has settled in well and ‘loving it’. Eric and Margaret (pictured) have been together for 57 years and after Eric became unwell, Margaret made the difficult decision to find an aged care home where Eric could get the support he needed with day to day living. Most importantly, Margaret wanted peace of mind knowing that Eric would be cared for within a safe, comfortable and nurturing environment. She was particular in ensuring that Eric’s daily care needs could be met as he also has difficulty walking. Kewarra Aged Care’s dedicated care team have qualifications and experience in aged care,

always providing that on-hand support which put her at ease. She was very happy saying “the staff at Kewarra Aged Care have been really good at taking care of him. They are delighted with Eric’s brand new charming suite which views a landscaped courtyard. It is light and spacious. “Eric can look out the lovely big window and can see what is going on – the birds flying around and he’s fine. He hasn’t grumbling at all,” said Margaret. Eric is happy to call Kewarra Aged Care home where he feels safe, cared for and part of a community. Business Development Manager, Joyce Stephen said that a priority was placed on ‘ageing in place’, creating a home-like environment and a sense of community. “The home is a single level dwelling making it easy for residents to access outdoor spaces and the central common areas. It has been designed to capture plenty of natural light and the open plan design in the lounge and living areas, the modern art-

work pieces and the touches of timber has all added to creating a relaxed and attractive setting for residents to enjoy,” she said. The home has delightful suites with large ensuite bathrooms, a café, hairdressing salon, an area for arts, crafts and lifestyle activities, a private dining room for special occasions, as well as a variety of lounge areas with large screen TVs. There is a centrally located social hub in the heart of the home where residents can enjoy a variety of planned activities and entertainment. There is also a dedicated dementia wing for residents that require special or higher levels of care and assistance for everyday living. The home provides permanent residential accommodation, respite and dementia specific services. Kewarra Aged Care is open for tours by appointment and is located at 110-124 Cottesloe Drive, Kewarra Beach. Phone 4242 2000 or visit www.kewarraagedcare.com.au

Students inspired by fashion twins Mareeba State High School students were treated to some inspiration last Wednesday when fashion designers Tahlia and Aisha Bowie stopped by for a visit. The Torres Strait Island

twins boast an impressive resume of experience in the fashion world and now run their own streetwear label. The girls spoke to students about coming from an indigenous background

and breaking into such a fierce industry, detailing how they wanted a clothing label that represented their heritage. The visit was sponsored by the Business Liaison Association.

Dog inspection program MAREEBA Shire Council has approved an Inspection Program to be carried out across the Shire to ensure that the owners of dogs comply with the registration requirements under the Animal Management Act (Dogs and Cats) Act 2008. The purpose of the program is also to ensure that

owners comply with their duty to provide a proper enclosure to prevent the animal from wandering as per Council’s Local Law (Animal Management) 2011. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore is strongly urging residents to ensure their dogs are registered with Council and

comply with regulations. “There are serious fines for dogs that are roaming at large, and if they’re unregistered of course there are even more serious consequences,” Cr Gilmore said. Council recently conducted an Approved Inspection Program near the Mareeba Golf Club.

school to give the kids a closer look at what they do. “The idea is to get the kids together, it’s a fun day,” said Terry Wilcox from St Anthony’s. “A lot of these kids will end up going on to high school together so they get to know one another. It’s also great for team building and school community building.”

Legionella detected at Herberton Hospital Routine quarterly water quality testing is currently underway at all hospitals in the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service. One of the recent 38 tests taken at Herberton Hospital has returned a low level positive result for Legionella bacteria, of a type that does not cause human illness. The positive result was

from a hand basin tap in one of the shared bathrooms. The Health Service’s Building, Engineering, and Maintenance team has treated that particular pipe to remove any traces of Legionella, and are again retesting to ensure adequate control systems are in place. The bathroom has been closed and will only reopen

once testing confirms that control systems are operating effectively. Clinical services at Herberton have not been affected. Please note any risk to staff, visitors, and patients is extremely low. Routine testing for all other facilities is underway and due to be finalised by the end of August for this reporting quarter.

Wildlife artist coming to Malanda for talk World-renowned wildlife artist and mammal expert, Jonathan Kingdon, will be giving a public talk at the Malanda Hotel at on Thursday, September 7. Already well-known to many Tablelands residents from his period of residency some years ago at the CSIRO headquarters in Atherton, Jonathan will be sharing his experiences and thoughts about life in Africa. The Tree Kangaroo and Mammal Group (TKMG) is co-hosting the event with the Tablelands Regional Council, in association with the William T

Cooper retrospective, that starts on September 1 at the Art Gallery in Atherton. The pioneering Tanzanian-born biologist, Jonathan Kingdon (pictured) has made ground-breaking research with his writings in zoology, anthropology and biogeography, and his depictions of African mammals. President of TKMG, Peter Valentine, invites the public to attend the free presentation. “Jonathan Kingdon's contributions are always stimulating and thoughtful,” said Mr Valentine.

“As a biogeographer myself, I thoroughly enjoyed his book ‘Island Africa’ which looks at rare plants and animals in Africa. Kingdon’s Field Guide to African mammals includes his illustrations of mammals from apes to ibex, shrews to elephants, cats to rhinos, antelopes and many others. “It should be an excellent evening.” A frequent visitor to Australia and Queensland, Kingdon has drawn extensively on Australian schol-

arship in his discussion of how modern humans first spread across continents, including Australia. For further Information contact Peter Valentine on 4096 6171 peter.valentine@jcu.edu.au

Drink drivers try to outrun police research has revealed nearly half of drivers who suspected they were over the legal alcohol limit had taken a different route home to avoid being breathalysed. The alarming statistics were released as part of Queensland Road Safety Week, to highlight the dangers of

drink driving. RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said 13.7 percent of drivers surveyed admitted to driving while they thought they were over the limit and, of those drivers, 46 percent admitted to avoiding police random breath tests. “What’s most disturbing is these drivers

know they’re doing the wrong thing and are actively trying to get away with it,” Ms Ritchie said. “They’re not only putting their lives on the line, but the lives of everyone else on the road. “Drink driving contributes to around 20 percent of all fatalities on Queensland roads.” Ms Ritchie said

RACQ was also concerned 31.4 percent of female respondents believed they could consume more than two standard drinks in the first hour to stay below the 0.05 blood alcohol content limit. “The guideline for women is they can consume a maximum of one standard drink an

hour, so it’s really worrying so many don’t know their limits,” she said. Ms Ritchie said motorists needed to make sure they planned ahead for social activities which involved alcohol. The 2017 Queensland road toll stands at 153, compared to 157 at the same time last year.

How do you choose a trustworthy automotive business? The Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland) is proud to showcase the reliability of their members through the Professional Circle; a symbol introduced in 2016 which represents ‘proof of professionalism’ in the Queensland automotive industry. The symbol is designed to alert consumers that businesses with the Professional Circle on display are respected professionals

and have committed to the benchmark of Industry Standards. The public recognise the Professional Circle as a business that maintains the highest of industry standards set by Queensland’s automotive industry peak body, MTA Queensland. All businesses are subject to a stringent approval process by their respective divisional committee before becoming approved as

an MTA Queensland member. MTA Queensland Group CEO, Dr Brett Dale said, “The importance of Queensland automotive businesses being a MTA Queensland member and displaying the Professional Circle could be the difference between a customer choosing to use their business or looking elsewhere. “Consumers are assured the 10 Commitments of the Professional Circle are met by

MTA Queensland members including honesty, professionalism, transparency, courtesy, integrity, care, clarity, proactivity, accountability and compliance. Queenslanders are aware that the 10 Commitments of the Professional Circle certify an incredibly high standard of professionalism in which they can trust.”

red light fines in QLD RACQ has expressed its shock at the high number of red light camera offences, as it revealed 30,000 fines were handed out across Queensland over 12 months. “Running a red light is simply inexcusable

and can have serious consequences for all road users at an intersection,” Ms Ritchie said. “It’s a complete disregard for road safety and there’s no reason to take an unnecessary risk. “Too many motor-

ists are choosing to run a yellow light to gain a few extra seconds, and with more than 150 lives already lost on Queensland roads this year, motorists need to change this behaviour. “Yellow means stop if

it’s safe to do so, not go faster.” “We’re keen to hear from our members about any intersections around the State so we can work with DTMR to make further improvements to road infrastructure.”

Driveway run overs can turn holidays into tragedies

Vehicle friendly highway to begin in Cairns The future of Queensland motoring is well under way and it’s electric. Environment Minister and Acting Main Roads Minister, Steven Miles has begun rolling out the first of many fast-charging electric vehicle stations beginning in Cairns and extending throughout Queensland locations as far south as the Gold Coast. Queensland’s peak industry body, the Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland), is leading the way in automotive disruptive solutions and praises the government for its forward-thinking approach on the future of automotive techno-

logical changes. “Electric vehicles can provide not only a reduced fuel cost for Queenslanders, but an environmentallyfriendly transport option, particularly when charged from renewable energy,” Mr Miles said. Dr Brett Dale, Group CEO of MTA Queensland said, “It has been clear for some time that electric vehicles are the way of the future, and it’s very pleasing to see the Queensland Government responding in such a positive manner. “Their vision to facilitate increased uptake of electric vehicles in Queensland whilst getting as many people as possible on

board the electric vehicle revolution is terrific for the motoring industry. “MTA Queensland is committed to educating and preparing the automotive industry on the incoming technological disruptions through hosted symposiums called Carmageddon. These events are designed to educate the industry on technological advancements coming our way and present opportunities to capitalise from a business perspective. We will continue to work closely with the Queensland Government to ensure the automotive industry is prepared for the fastpaced automotive disruptors.”

RACQ has urged parents to be vigilant around driveways during the upcoming school holidays, with three Queensland children hit on average each week in low-speed vehicle run overs RACQ spokesperson Steve Spalding said the holiday period was a high-risk time for children to be run over, especially around homes. “With children playing around the house over the school break, we’re urging parents to be alert around driveways,” Mr Spalding said. “It’s shocking these types of incidents are happening so frequently with eight children killed each year across Aus-

tralia after being run over.” Mr Spalding said driveway run overs commonly occurred when young children were unsupervised or had been playing near a vehicle. “When reversing visibility is poor and children wander into the path of the vehicle, tragic incidents can occur. Parents need to ensure their children are supervised at all times and play areas are sepa-

rated by fences from the driveway,” he said. Former Wallaby Brendan Cannon’s 16-month-old son Sam survived a terrifying incident in 2010 where Mr Cannon accidentally reversed over his child in his Brisbane driveway. “It’s impossible to describe how that moment felt – we’re just so incredibly lucky we still have our beautiful boy,” Mr Cannon said. Mr Cannon said parents needed to be on

high alert when driving around children. “Sadly, one moment of driveway complacency can turn into a moment of tragedy,” he said. “We need to be diligent and consistent in taking measures to prevent incidents like this from occurring. Parents need to be conscious of this every time they jump in the car.”

Mossman Mill plant availability and throughput were above budget for Week 11. The factory processed 46,146 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 319 tonnes/hour. The major issues for the week occurred around the pan stage with numerous stops for high stock levels as the pan station struggled to maintain seed production and turnaround times. Other down time for the week was for the intercarrier chain idler shaft breaking, shredder tip inspection and repair, and failed boiler tube repairs late in the week. The CCS continues to be on budget. • Total for week: 46,146 tonnes • CCS for week: 13.61 • Total cane crushed to date: 429,820 tonnes • CCS average to date: 12.45 • 2017 crop estimate: 930,000 tonnes

Thank You THANK YOU!

It gives me great pleasure as chairman of the Mareeba Multicultural Festival Committee to acknowledge the vast amount of co-operative and community support that has created by far the best festival in nineteen years of operation. I especially thank each and every one of our generous sponsors, The State Government (Multicultural Affairs), and the various ethnic groups, people who mounted cultural and food displays, performers and artists and of course the many thousands of the general public from throughout the Far North who contributed to our success. I also wish to pass on a special mention of appreciation for the personal support and committed effort of each and every one of my committed members. These include Mareeba Shire Council, Fred, Frank, Sabrina, Fatima, Milli, Uto, Coco, Francesca, Gina, Carl, Jennefer, Mary and everyone else who assisted us in our endeavours. I trust that this has proved an excellent base from which we can look forward to a similarly successful festival in 2018. In appreciation, GIULIANO CORDENOS, Chairman, Mareeba Multicultural Festival Committee

Ladies cricket cup success

Defending champions – The Maiden Overs took out the winter season ‘Lacy Bra Cup’ last Sunday.

The second season of the popular ladies cricket ‘Lacy Bra Cup’ came to an end last Sunday in Mareeba. Five teams competed in the winter season cup, with teams from Innisfail and Mulgrave and Cairns joining the comp. Just like the first summer season held earlier this year, there were ladies playing that had never stepped on a Cricket pitch before – the Lacy Bra Cup all about encouraging fun and participation. “This was most definitely achieved with lots of positive feedback given,” said cup founder Trisha Spry. Defending champions, the Maiden Overs, once again took out the title this season after coming in second place on the ladder

behind the Cricket Chicks team. “The ladies comp has not only been fun, but also was a platform for the players to raise money towards the McGrath Foundation, through Pink Stumps Day, with $509 being collected over the four weeks of the event,” said Mrs Spry. Cricket now continues with the Mareeba and District Cricket Club about to kick off it’s new season and they are calling for players to join the ranks. Grades start from Under 8’s, T20 Blast (8-12), Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and two senior mens teams. The club sign on will be held on Friday September 15 at Firth Park from 5pm, or sign up online through playcricket.com.au

Shockers after double

The Maiden Overs in action.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

The Shockers senior ladies side are endeavoring to clinch consecutive championship titles after scoring another victory in Mareeba’s basketball fixtures last week. Last season’s top side was always in command of their clash with Miakats and were never trouble to score over Miakats by 34 to 18. However the Dust ladies combination also showed that the season’s top title is

not beyond them. They produced a strong performance to defeat Gigglers by 32 to 21. Leading 16 to 12 at half time, Dust maintained their advantage after the long break to register their good 11 point success. Sunni Lin showed the way for the Dust ladies with her outstanding basketball skills. In an unusual situation, the senior men’s competition resulted in forfeit wins

to Barras, Stingrays and Red Devils. Their opponents were unable to field sides mainly due to illness. Certainly entertaining Junior High School fixtures were on display last Thursday afternoon. The early fixture saw warriors prove a little too solid for Chicago B’s, gaining victory by 44 to 22. The second afternoon fixture between Caviliers and Olympians was keenly contested throughout the

encounter. Caviliers were holding a 27 to 20 lead when the half time hooter sounded. Although trailing Caviliers when the second stanza commenced, the Olympians’ youngsters still appeared capable of a strong second half fightback against Caviliers. However Zayd Myrteza provided a major hurdle for Olympians to overcome with his free scoring tally of 27 points.

Wynter Brooks was another player who contribution well for the winners with 14 points. Also turning in a creditable performance for the winning side was Mateou Le’eane. The Olympians side had a number of good performers, in particular Brenan Collis, Nicolas Fogale and Dinithi Heenkenda cause some anxious moments to Caviliers through the fixture.

Sport and Rec plan input Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella has called on the community to get involved in developing the next Sport and Recreation Plan for the Tablelands region. “This plan is about making sure we have a diverse range of sport and recreation opportunities and that all residents have access to good facilities to keep them active and healthy”, the Mayor said. The Mayor also announced the appointment of a community reference group to work with the project team throughout the study. The group’s role will be integral in ensuring broad community engagement as well as testing ideas and directions for the new plan. “We are building on the success of the last plan and want to ensure the community has multiple opportunities to tell us their concerns and ideas for the next five years.” Cairns-based consultants Otium Planning Group have been appointed to work with Council on the plan and an extensive community engagement program is being finalised. Mt Garnet pool reopens The Mount Garnet Pool has re-opened following the installation of a new Token Access System. The decision to re-open the pool was reached following a recent meeting between Council and Workplace Health and Safety QLD. A token operated turnstile has been installed at the pool to enable access to the five lane, 25 metre pool without the reliance on an operator at the facility. Tokens are available for purchase from the Mount Garnet Visitor Information Centre for $2 per adult and $1 per child under 18 years of age. An additional control to be implemented includes a limit of four children for each accompanying adult to allow adequate supervision as well as ongoing monthly risk assessments

and daily pool checklists. The pool re-opening using the Token Access System will be on an ongoing trial basis, and Council will continue to liaise with Mount Garnet community groups, WHS QLD, Council WHS, Council Parks and Gardens and Council Facilities to provide the best outcomes for the use of the new system. Council has also recently provided a bronze medallion course at the Mount Garnet Pool to improve local community knowledge on water safety, as well as checklists and ongoing community engagement on use of the pool. For more information on swimming programs and if you are interested in undertaking volunteering at the pool contact Council on 1300362 242 or email info@trc.qld.gov.au.

Australia’s Imogen Smith at the 2014 Crocodile Trophy.

Gearing up for 2017 Crocodile Race The “MEPT – Crocodile Trophy 2017” is only a month away – Australia’s and the world’s oldest and most legendary mountain bike stage race will start on 16 September in Cairns and take it’s international field of riders through the Tablelands to Port Douglas, where the event will finish on Four Mile Beach eight days later on 23 September. For the 2017 edition, the organisers of the “Croc” have just announced The Middle East Peace Tour (MEPT) as its principal sponsor and events partner. The MEPT is the first

cross-border sporting event for peace in the world. Cyclists from all around the world will be permitted to participate in its inaugural race in March 2018 – from amateur and hobby cyclists to professionals – all are welcome to support the idea of peace in sport, says Gerhard Schönbacher. Schönbacher, a former professional road cyclist and the founder of both events, is proud that his two races complement each other so well. “Just as I´ve always wanted to discover and explore the most beautiful

Golfers battle it out for Summer Cup Another fantastic day was had at the Ravenshoe Millstream Country Club with members battling it out for the Summer Cup Trophy – American Foursomes. This particular Trophy has been within the club since 1955, with

regions of Australia on the bike with my Crocodile Trophy racers, I´ve had a life-long dream to create a cycling event promoting peace with the participation of athletes from all countries and entities in the Middle East area,” he said. The MEPT starts on the March 9th in Amman with a circuit race in the City Centre and finishes in Jerusalem March 15th. Just like the stage plan of the Crocodile Trophy, Schönbacher added, the seven stages of the MEPT were very versatile and passed through the spectacular scenery

and unique sites that are so characteristic of this region. Over the past 23 years the Crocodile Trophy has attained a real legendary status internationally and locally in Australia – it attracts a wide variety of cyclists ranging from amateur and hobby riders to former professional and current elite racers. This year the Dutch three-time Tour de France stage winner Erik Dekker will be at the start line alongside the French National Marathon Champion Miguel Martinez.

Imogen Smith heads up the large Australian contingent at the Crocodile Trophy this year. The 2014 Elite women’s winner will return to Cairns after a major injury on the road earlier this year. The adventure racer Joanne Koy is stepping up from amateur into the Elite category in the Crocodile Trophy this year with respectable results on the National Marathon racing scene this year. In the men’s the Australian riders include many multiple Crocodile Trophy finishers and category winners such as Garry James.

Prems miss out on semis The Mareeba Bulls Reserves and Second division mens sides will fly the flag for the club this weekend in the first of the FNQ Football semi-finals. The clubs Premier mens team missed out by a solitary point after the weekends match between the Stratford Dolphins and Innisfail Cutters ended in a 1-1 draw. The disappointing outcome for the premiers brings to light the controversy from last weekend’s match where the Bulls were denied the win from three very contentious referee decisions

that would have taken the side through to the semis. The Bulls Second division Orange team will host the Atherton Eagles this Friday night in Mareeba in an elimination semi-final. The Reserves will then travel down to Stratford on Sunday to take on the Leichardt Lions in another elimination semi-final. The Tableland derby on Friday night promises to be a cracker with both sides going into the match on back of last start victories. The Eagles last game was a 3-0 win over the Bulls, so the homeside will be out

for some revenge and nothing will be sweater then to knock the Tableland rivals out of the finals race. On Sunday the clubs Reserves will be bolstered with Adrian Madrid and John Ghensi now available to play. With everyone fresh and ready to go, the side will head into the match against the Lions confidant, but cautious of a Leichhardt side on the back of a 13-2 win over the Marlin Coast Rangers.

14 year old’s aiming at the Championships Toby Greenwood is already the national U15 Gravity Enduro Champion.

Young Toby Greenwood would love to tackle the international competitive mountain bike scene but until then his sights are aimed squarely at the Gravity Enduro Mountain Bike Championships in Adelaide this October. The 14-year-old St Stephens High School student has already made a name for himself in the sport with 16 podium finishes last year, including winning the U15s 2016 Gravity Enduro Championships. This year he has to compete in the U17 category due to his 15th birthday falling on the same day of the event and dad Ashley is working hard to try and

raise the funds for the trip. “It’s always hard to get to these events when you live in this part of the world,” he said. “But he works hard and it is his passion so we’re doing all we can to get him there.” Toby and his family have raised around $1000 so far thanks to the generous donations of local individuals and businesses. He also has the backing of the Australian Sports Foundation which offers donors tax deductible donations. “He loves his sport,” said Mr Greenwood. “We’d just love to give him that opportunity to

compete nationally.” Toby has been a member of Tablelands Cycle Sports and competes regularly in events throughout the State. Gravity Enduro is a form of mountain bike racing that was developed a few years ago and is gaining popularity. The first Gravity Enduro Championships were held in Cairns three years ago. The competition is held over five timed stages. Anyone wishing to help Toby compete in Adelaide at this year’s Championships can make a tax-deductable donation via www.asf.org.au/athletes/ toby-greenwood/

TEAM

Gators through to qualifier

Mareeba’s Clint Posselt heads for the try line to win the match.

The Mareeba Gladiators A-graders took to the finals field for the first time in five years on Sunday at Barlow Park, Cairns. They came up against a very determined Yarrabah team that pushed them all the way to the final whistle. With both teams going neck to neck throughout the game it was local boy Clint Posselt that scored

the winning try with just eight minutes left in the game. It was Clint’s first time playing finals footy in a Gladiators A-grade jersey. Coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said it was a tug of war. “Both teams knew what was on the line and our buys stood up when it counted,” said Coach Ingebrigtsen.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

“It was a very physical game, very fast paced – it was what you would expect of a final. “They gave it their all and in the end we got what we came here to achieve, a chance to play Innisfail for the right to play in the grand final.” said Ingebrigtsen. Next week is going to be just as tough, if not

tougher, as the Gators sustained three further injuries to players Mattie Oosen, Ian King and Kian Grogan. That brings a total of seven first graders unavailable to play which will surely test the clubs depth during the match. Kick-off will be at 2pm this Sunday at Barlow Park, Cairns.
