Local businesses have come together to fix up a damaged war memorial just in time for Anzac Day. Rod Hickling from Savannah Steel Fabrication in Mareeba and John Raso from Mareeba Tyre Power (pictured) joined forces last week to replace disintegrated tyres and rusted rims on the century old canon at the Mareeba Cenotaph. The two businesses chose to donate their time and products for free in the spirit of generosity in time for Anzac Day today (Wednesday, April 25). Local historical researcher Elwyn Troughton was devastated to discover last month that the Cenotaph at Anzac Park on Byrnes Street had been tampered with and that one of the wheels on the guns that sit behind it had been slashed.
Mrs Troughton said this attack was just the latest in a long line of vandalism on the memorial that honours local men that took part in World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War. The Cenotaph was built through the fundraising work of the Soldier’s Memorial Committee, and constructed by Melrose and Fenwick. It was unveiled on Anzac Day in 1923. It has been moved a number of times around the town and in 2001 two military guns called 105mm L5 Pack Howitzer’s were added to the display by the President of the Mareeba RSL Sub Branch, Roy Blakeney and members. They were unveiled on Long Tan Day August 18, 2001. Services will be taking place across the Tablelands today for Anzac Day. More information about individual events will be on council websites.

Kuranda Men’s shed finally has a home By Rebecca Wallis
It’s been seven years in the making, but finally Kuranda Men’s Shed has a home. Last week Mareeba Shire Councillors voted to endorse the group’s application to occupy a portion of land to develop a base for members to meet and socialise, promoting physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
The group has been in negotiations with Council to access a suitable parcel of land for their meeting place. Council had previously offered the portion of a reserve which holds what was the old Civil Works Kuranda Depot which is no longer used. Consequently, the section of land has not been used for a number of years and the group accepted the offer. “We are elated,” said president of the club’s
steering committee Daryl Douglass. “We can’t wait to get started now. I’m lying awake at night thinking of all the little projects we can do now!” The portion of land includes an old shed which the group can use as an initial base of their operations and the site has sufficient area to allow for the erection of a new shed which has been donated to them by the Australian Defence Force.
“This is the original site that was offered but for various reasons was turned down, but we had so many ongoing issues with alternative sites, we went back and looked at this and the original problem with this site doesn’t exist anymore,” said Mr Douglass. “It was about sewerage but council got the site surveyed for sewerage so we can have toilets there now.” Mr Douglass said the club had been donated
multiple pieces of machinery for use in the shed, as well as timber which had been sitting in various locations while a venue was being sought. The vote was carried unanimously by all councillors and Mayor Tom Gilmore said he was pleased the group accepted Council’s offer. “I am delighted that we’ve finally come to this after all these years,” he said. “Council certainly encourages the building of
strong partnerships with the community and we are delighted to be able to assist this group who provide a wonderful service for gentlemen in our community.” The group will now wait for insurances and certifications before earthworks will begin and the shed will be erected. An AGM will be held before June 30 to elect a committee and finally get the group up and running.
More funding for arts projects Over the last three years, Mareeba Shire Council has funded 33 community arts, heritage and cultural initiatives, to the tune of $110,000, through Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) program. After a recommendation given by the RADF Advisory Committee, Council today agreed to fund seven projects under the community grant round of the RADF 2017/18 strategy. The funding is an ongoing partnership between the State Government and the Mareeba Shire Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. Chair of the RADF Committee, Councillor Angela Toppin congratulated the seven successful applicants. “It is wonderful to see Queensland Government support art and cultural projects in regional areas, and I look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition,” Cr Toppin said. “Creative opportunities are essential to the cultural vitality and wellbeing of the community by decreasing social isolation and sense of belonging to the community.”

A 46-year-old man was found growing cannabis plants in bushland near Watsonville after police located 130 mature plants and 46 seedlings with an approximate weight exceeding 380kg. The man will appear in the Atherton Magistrates Court on May 1.

homeless women and fights for domestic violence victims. For the month of April they will have a Pink Collection box at their store and last week local Intimo bra fit specialist Raylene Srhoj was one of the first to add to the stock. “It’s one of the last things you think about when you’re in a bad situation, but it’s one of those things that’s really impor-
tant so that’s why we find the need to have pads and tampons available,” she said. “Intimo support women. Not just in their bras and underwear but we do breast cancer awareness, we do Project Uplift and we donate bras with that. So Share the Dignity is right in line with our company morals in that way of supporting women.” Through Intimo Ray-
lene has also been a collector for the charity and staff at St Vinnies say there is a big need for this specific type of help. “This is the first time we’ve ever done this but we hear all the time about how important it is to women,” said Mary Bajramovic. It is part of St Vinnies on-going support for people in need. “We support domestic violence cases, any agen-
cies can refer into us and we provide support to them. One of them is the women’s shelter in Atherton,” said Anna Pietrograzia. The campaign is run every April and August. Roadhouse plan concerning locals
By Rebecca Wallis
A development application for a roadhouse business in Mareeba was approved by councillors last week, shocking neighbouring residents who say their standard of living will now be compromised. An application was lodged with Mareeba Shire Council on behalf of Greg Williams and includes plans for a tourist park, short term accommodation and a cafe and dining area on Williams Road which runs alongside the Mulligan Highway. The facility will be developed over seven stages and will ultimately service ‘industrial workers, road transport workers, rural workers and passing travellers’ with 143 beds as well as on site parking, a bus bay and communal swimming pool. Nine locals submitted objections to the application and five people wrote in support of the plans. Mr Williams says the business model is “badly needed” in Mareeba. “I’ve had hundreds of people asking me to build this,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from people saying it’s very needed for the northern side of Mareeba. There
is an acute shortage of accommodation there.” But residents living in Debel Close, behind the development, say they will now be subjected to late night noise from visitors and trucks pulling in just metres from their homes. “I’m extremely disappointed,” said Teresa Wheatley who says a buyer pulled out of the sale of her home when they found out about the development. “I’ve got this going in no less than 30 metres from my bedroom window and my back patio. How can I be expected to live like that?” Concerns were raised when the application stated that some of the accommodation would be for backpackers, leaving neighbours to speculate the facility would be home to late night parties, raucous behaviour and crime. But Mayor Tom Gilmore says he would never have approved the development if he thought it would impede on neighbouring residents’ way of life. “They worded it wrong,” said Cr Gilmore of the application. “The proponents have regretted that. So of course everybody was upset and I have every sympathy for the people next door who were con-
cerned about that because all of the bells rang. “I know they were thinking were going to have this lunatic place beside us that’s going to be smoky fires and people dancing around the place and on the booze, but that’s not what’s intended and I won’t live to be disappointed because it simply will not happen. “The way it’s been conditioned, the way it’s been structured, the way it’s intended, we’ll make it a successful addition for the kind of accommodation that we need in this town.” Cr Gilmore said the development would be more like a motel/overnight rest stop and echoed Mr Williams’ comments about its need. “This town’s been limited to three motels now for 20 years and that’s far too long,” he said. “A town of this size with the industry that’s growing here, I would suggest that we could do with two or three more on top of this one. There are other towns of smaller size that are far better served with accommodation.” Three councillors voted against the development including Cr Kevin Davies, Cr Nipper Brown and Cr Mary Graham. But with four votes in favour the ap-
plication was approved. “Of course it was a difficult decision to make because you worry about other peoples’ views,” said Cr Gilmore. “Had it been a backpacker place I don’t think it would have gone too far because of the concern of the neighbours and other things. But once it’s appropriately conditioned and once you understand the structure and the intent, I think a reasonable person would conclude that it will be ok.” Debel Close resident Lynn Blyth said she feels “shattered” that the development is going ahead. She bought her property in 2014 hoping for a peaceful place to retire after suffering the loss of a business and cancer. “If people can lose $100,000 off their properties which is conceivable, why is that not a concern for council?” she said. “We work in the community, so we’re committed to this community. I coach hockey and tennis. We’re the people that surely you want in Mareeba. “Why is Mareeba Shire Council selling out the residents? I feel like we’re being sold out as individuals for development.” Mrs Wheatley, a Mareeba resident for 30 years,
says she is now considering moving out of the shire. “I am shocked it how it went through,” she said. “I spoke to every one of the councillors in the weeks leading up to this and all of them said that they didn’t like the idea of backpackers accommodation but the minute they brought that up they said they worded it wrong. No way – it’s been in the plans right from the start, the drawings are there in black and white. “I am at a point where I don’t care if I stay in this town. If that can go in someone’s back yard, then what’s stopping them from doing it in other peoples’ back yards?” The proposed development will have a full time manager and only delivery trucks will be allowed into the precinct. The ultimate development includes a main building containing a cafe and dining area, kitchen, bar, office and reception with an associated shop, laundry and amenities. There will also be a manager’s residence, five single cabins, five queen bed cabins, five two bedroom cabins, eight single room cabins with two single beds, one disabled room cabin and two buildings with ten double rooms in each.
Dimbulah Kindy now has the funds to remain open thanks to government funding that was announced last week. Member for Hill Shane Knuth welcomed Minister Grace Grace’s commitment to provide $10,000 for the Kindy. “Small towns normally get rejected for this kind of funding but an injection like this, along with all the other community support the kindy has received, will keep this important service operating until perma-
nent measures are put in place,” he said. Mr. Knuth said the Dimbulah community had rallied behind the kindy and it had paid off. “When it became known the kindy was going to be closed down we got straight onto Minister Grace,” he said. “Services like this are so important to the survival of regional towns. “This is a huge win for Dimbulah, now we need to do what we can to secure the kindy’s future.”

CLUB NEWS With Mareeba Lioness Club The Lionesses have had a busy start to the new year. Commencing in February, we started the Pensioners with their usual morning tea and bingo which is always held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the CWA Hall. After a very successful cake stall, we donated $1,600 to Ovarian cancer research. We thank the public for supporting us for this worthy cause. In March, 13 Lionesses travelled to Cairns Sheridan Hotel where our annual Breakaway was held. 98 fellow Lionesses from around the Tablelands gathered for a weekend of fellowship and fun.
An excursion to the Cairns Aquarium was a highlight and Saturday night we had dinner and entertainment which was hilarious with Cairns Lionesses performing a fantastic skit. On Sunday, a forum was followed by Guest Speakers and a Mad Hatter’s Party. The 2019 Breakaway is to be held in Townsville so we are looking forward to that. In April, we had a late Easter for the Pensioner’s at their monthly morning tea and bingo. They were given cute little bunnies made from face washers and a chocolate egg. Mareeba Lionesses volunteer on a number of projects including Meals on
Wheels, Hospital Trolley, Football, and at various other events. On the social side, we meet for Coffee Capers once a month to celebrate birthdays within the club and in doing so we support the local businesses. Mareeba Lioness Club meet on the 1st Wednesday of the month so please come along as although we work hard we also have a lot of fun. If you wish to find out more information, please ring Carol on 40921584. Our annual Pink Ribbon Garden Party Date Claimer is Saturday 11th August at the Mareeba Turf Club. Hope to see you there.

Rare success for Far North cricketer By Rebecca Wallis
In what has been described by Cricket Far North as a “very rare achievement”, Mareeba boy Lachlan Ford has been selected for Cricket Queensland’s U19 Development squad. For the 18-year-old former Mareeba State High School student, this is the eventuation of a dream he has held for years. “This is the first time I’ve been picked for the state squads and it’s been a goal since I was about 12,” he said. “I’ve been working my ass off, then last year I thought ‘bugger it’. I’ve gone out with the approach to just enjoy my cricket because I’ve been putting way too much pressure on myself in previous years.” Lachlan has just started studying Sport Exercise Science and Psychology Science at JCU in Townsville and says that cricket is a “massive” part of his life. He plays first grade cricket for Rovers in Cairns and still travels back to Mareeba regularly to play for his home town team. Mum Meredith is CFN secretary and his dad was a keen player in his younger years. His success is amusing to those who remember how much he hated the game as a kid. “I’ve been playing cricket for 10 or 11 years now,” he said. “It’s been quite a journey. The first time I ever went to cricket I absolutely hated it. I wouldn’t have a bar of it at all. I didn’t want to wear the long white pants. “But mum took me along the next year and I sort of got into it.” Clearly developing a love for the game later on, he is now facing the possibility of competing at the
U19 National Championships if he is picked from the development squad in July. Either way, a kid from the Far North making the top 18 players in Queensland is not something to be taken lightly. “Usually you don’t get any country boys, it’s just those city slickers that get picked for everything,” said Lachlan, laughing. “They have more opportunity. “The selectors coach those boys day in, day out, training and weekends where they’re performing at Brisbane first grade which is basically your elite for club cricket anyway. “It’s unheard of to get three country boys on the squad.” Admitting he “dropped a grape” he was eating when he found out he had been selected, Lachlan was blown away by the opportunity. “My mum said ‘you’ll never believe the email I just got’,” he said. “I thought this is nuts. You might be a big fish in a small pond up here but then you go down there and it’s a massive pond. There’s a lot of talent down there. “It’s an honour to get picked.” But like all good sportsmen, Lachlan said he would never have made it so far without the support of certain people. “I wouldn’t be the cricketer I am without some of the guys here and the guys down at Rovers as well in Cairns,” he said. “Brendan Payne and Trevor Roy. Brendan especially. When I was first in third grade side four years ago, they could have gone ‘oh yeah, you’re some little brat coming from Under 14s’ but they brought me in and really showed me around. I’m really thankful for the opportunity.
accountable governance to promote the prosperity and livability of the Shire.” Mayor Tom Gilmore said the strategic priorities start with financial sustainability. “We will continue to manage our finances efficiently and effectively to ensure long-term financial sustainability, while bolstering capacity to provide a high level of service across all areas of the Shire, “ Cr Gilmore. Cr Gilmore said community engagement and promoting an active, safe and healthy lifestyle were also priorities over the next

In keeping with current trends with other regional Councils, Mareeba Shire Council will no longer offer building certification services, with an exception for remote areas in the Shire. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the private certification industry has grown. “An investigation into the market has revealed that there are sufficient private certifiers in the region to provide adequate service to the region.” Cr Gilmore explained. “For many years, Council has been offering building certification services however under
Local Government Regulations, this service is not mandatory.” Council will continue to assist those remote communities that are not frequently serviced by private certifiers. “We understand that people living in remote parts of our Shire may find it difficult to obtain a private building certifier, so we will still be offering the service in those remote areas,” Cr Gilmore said. More information, including a map of the building certification boundary, will be available on Council’s website.

Council budget set to balance In preparation for the upcoming budget, Council today adopted several scheduled fees and charges for the next financial year. Mayor Tom Gilmore said next year’s budget would again be a safe and sensible one. “There has been a slight increase in fees as you’d expect across the
board to keep in line with the rising cost of living and cost recovery,” Cr Gilmore said. “Our staff have been working diligently to ensure our budget puts Council in a sound financial position for a sustainable future.” Council is set to adopt the budget at a special Council meeting in June.
Charity auction success Over $13,000 was raised on March 24 for a grateful family in Speewah that has been rocked by a cancer diagnosis. Brad Martin was forced back to work last month weeks after finishing a second round of chemo and not long after having his oesophagus removed. The father of four was struggling to pay the bills as his wife Paula is a full time carer to their son. Upon hearing about their struggle, neighbours Mick Dowling and Tamara Kotzur rallied around getting donations to auction off at an event at The Billabong in Kuranda on March 24. The event was a huge success and the money
raised means that Brad and Paula are no longer feeling the threat of losing their home. Mick, from Farmall in Speewah, is now making the event an annual occasion, as an opportunity to bring together local services and businesses and raise money for other families doing it tough. Caption: Doug Stephens from AirBridge Communications and John Friend from Kur Cow. Doug donated a $3000 security camera package with professional install included which was purchased by John at Kur-Cow for $1800. John also donated his time and was the auctioneer on the day.

Mareeba woman Stephanie Bell has been instrumental in convincing Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter to push to get a life saving cancer drug made more affordable. Mrs Bell met with Mr Katter recently about getting cancer drugs Ribociclib and Palbocicilib put on the Pharmaceuticals Ben-
efits Scheme (PBS). Last week it was announced that the PBS have recommended both drugs be added to the scheme. Mr Katter has advocated relentlessly for the drugs to be added and has labelled the move as a ‘mighty step’ in the right direction. He confirmed that while he is confident that the ne-
gotiations regarding drug costs will progress swiftly, he will remain steadfast in commitment to keep the pressure on the Federal Government to see the drugs added to the PBS. “It is imperative that the Government addresses the current system of supporting those with life threatening illnesses, which
affects so many families in the community,” Mr Katter said. “I have urged the Minister for Health to address the additional cost incurred by families facing life threatening cancer, so that cancer sufferers may have an affordable drug readily available and have more time to live. Overall survival is of course the ul-
timate aim of treatment but progression free survival or slowing down the course of disease is also important to women. “Being able to delay the onset of chemotherapy and all of the associated toxicities and hospital visits that can bring, can make a huge difference to the lives of women with cancer,” Mr Katter said.
Free grazing workshop focuses on eco-farming
Soil health, pasture management and rotational grazing were popular topics at a free workshop on natural grazing methods in the Ravenshoe region recently. Terrain NRM brought a leader in ecological farming, Dick Richardson, to the area for the ‘Grazing Naturally’ workshop as part of its new Herbert River Gully and Grazing Program funded by the Australian Government through its Reef Trust Phase IV program. The workshop was held at Woodleigh Station on Monday, April 9. The project included earthworks to re-shape gullies, revegetation work,
fencing to keep stock away from streambanks, weed management and a fresh look at grazing practices. Landholders learnt about flexible, easy-to-replicate paddock grazing patterns. The workshop also looked at different grazing pressures for different paddocks and managing land on a case by case basis. The second in the series, a Stockmanship Grazing School field day and workshop will be held at Woodleigh Station from Monday 14 May to Friday 18 May. More information is available at www.terrain. org.au or by phoning Jen Mackenzie on 0438 206 343.

Navua Sedge program finishes TRC’s Navua Sedge Herbicide Co-contribution Program, launched in September last year, is coming to a close. The program, funded by the Works for Queensland Program, assisted landowners to manage Navua Sedge infestations. “It’s been a very successful program,” said Mayor Joe Paronella. “The work on private land complemented control measures being conducted on Council-owned land. The $84,000 provided by the funding has helped 130 landowners in our re-

gion. Karen and Dave from Malanda Rural Supplies have supported this program by providing advice, coordinating chemical orders and collecting invoices from landowners. We can’t thank them enough for their support.” Navua Sedge is an aggressive and invasive plant that competes with tropical pasture species and has low nutritional value for stock. Landholders involved in this round of funding need to submit outstanding payments to TRC by the end of the month.

The Mareeba Heritage Centre is now home to a life-saving piece of equipment, thanks to a generous donation from the Lions Club. After suffering from a heart attack himself, Mareeba Lions Club member Alan Carroll set about fundraising for an Automatic External Defibrilator (AED) – a small portable device that anyone can use to re-start the heart of someone suffering from cardiac arrest. It saves valuable time before professional medical care can be accessed. “It’s self-explanatory,” said Mr Carroll, who said special training to operate the device is not necessary. “It’s got two buttons, a green one and an orange one. You press the green

one and it talks to you and tells you exactly what to do. “You put the two pads on and it assesses the patient and if necessary it gives a shock and it tells you to clear everyone away and then it assesses again and tells you whether to carry on with CPR or whatever you need.” Mareeba Lions Club decided to donate the $3000 piece of equipment to the Mareeba Heritage Centre
due to the high number of people passing through. It transpired they were looking for donations of something similar. “Last year we had three occasions where we had to call an ambulance for visitors and I think they were related or potentially a heart,” said Heritage Centre manager Janet Greenwood. “We get 57,000 people coming through here per year.”
Mr Carroll, who is also a volunteer at the Centre and a member of the local SES, said the Lions Club would carry the AED with them a few times a year when attending local events such as Anzac Day this week. “You don’t really need skills, but I’ve done first aid and you’ve got a few of the staff here that have done first aid,” said Mr Carroll. “Doing anything is better than doing nothing.”

Four Tablelands youngsters have been named in the Cairns Show Association’s Rural Ambassador and Young Rural Ambassador Awards. Alyssa McNamara from Ravenshoe was announced last week as the Young Rural Ambassador winner, while Matthew Castino from Walkamin was announced as the Rural Ambassador Winner. Austin Watkin from Malanda and Bradley Mather from Tolga were runners up in the Young Rural Ambassador award. “It’s sending forth young people such as these into the community to promote the agricultural show movement in FNQ that assures the future of such events like the Cairns Show,” said Secretary Manager of the Cairns Show Association Victoria Crosb. “We are proud so many young people entered this award and it assures us the future is in great hands.” The award winners will now represent the Cairns Show at special events

someone who is competent, courteous, doesn’t break the road rules, drives at a safe speed? Everyone’s driving skills and experience differ, as do our individual views about risk
and confidence in how we drive. We’re also very quick to criticise others about how well they drive or how road authorities design, build and maintain roads.
Have a look at any social media forum or Facebook post about road safety. If there’s one thing that’s very apparent, it’s that there is no end of incompetent, rule-breaking and dis-
courteous people using our roads. It’s clear from social media that others need to lift their game if they want to drive on any road that you or I use. We also see no end of calls for greater police enforcement against those who do break the rules or put others at risk – after all, they are the problem, not me. So, just what are these rules we want enforced on others? If you think back to your days as a learner driver, you’ll remember there are lots of them – some you probably agree with and some you don’t. They are, however, designed to help keep us safer on the road. And who doesn’t agree with the principle of keeping us safer on the road? The issue, then, is how do we do a better job of ‘selling’ road safety? We have road rules based around safety
and we have drivers who overwhelmingly want to carry out their journey without becoming a road toll statistic. We also have a few million other drivers on Queensland’s roads who, we can assume, mostly want the same. We don’t like it when they drive in a way that puts us or our families at risk. Rather than think of other drivers as being the cause, maybe we should take a close look at what we could do to improve safety on our roads. How about we set a better example for those who aren’t as safe or good at driving as us? With your help, selling road safety could be much easier. For more information on safe driving practices, listen to RACQ Living’s latest podcast on Road Safety.

Searching for RACQ’s top model
RACQ are looking for Queensland’s best looking cars and motorbikes in an exclusive new competition NOTHING unites the people of Queensland more than their need for transport. For some, transport is just a means of getting around. But for others, it is so much more – cars and motorbikes represent a hobby, a passion, a calling and even a way of life. As Queensland’s largest motoring club, it’s safe to say RACQ fall in the latter, which is why they are proud to announce our exclusive new competition for motoring enthusiasts, RACQ’s Top Model. Like RACQ’s successful Pet Search competition, we are looking
for Queenslander’s to submit their motoring ‘pride and joy’ for a chance to be crowned RACQ’s Top Model. To be in the running, snap a photo of your car or motorbike and upload it to topmodel.racqliving. com.au for a chance to win free fuel, a Repco voucher and a starring role on the front cover of a 2018/19 issue of The Road Ahead. Entrants will need to stand out from the crowd in one of six categories (American, Asian, Australian, British, European and Motorcycle) and impress our expert panel of judges. Each category win-
ner will win a $500 Puma fuel voucher, while the Top Model winner will receive a $2000 Puma fuel voucher, a $1000 Repco voucher and a photoshoot for The Road Ahead. Plus, the entrant with the highest number of public votes will become the People’s Choice champion and win a $1000 Repco voucher and a $500 Puma fuel voucher. To celebrate their victory, all winners will be invited to attend RACQ MotorFest 2018. Get in quick – the competition ends on 31 May, 2018.
Learning the ropes Queensland’s learner driver test could receive its biggest overhaul in 40 years. The current multiple-choice, written learner driver test could soon become a thing of the past. A new, online training module and exam developed by Brisbane technology company Croomo, in conjunction with the State Government, could soon replace the existing paper test. The move to a more technological approach comes in response to reports that teens weren’t interested in studying the ‘old-fashioned’ way, with more than 30 percent of Queenslanders who sat the exam failing in 2017. Unlike the current 30 question, multiplechoice test, the new program – PrepL – requires students to work through multiple learning modules and complete more than 380 questions, challenges and activities before they can pass. Croomo Chief Executive Officer Daniel Bermingham said the course had already been trialled at multiple schools throughout Queensland. “The test itself is now an experience,” he said. “It takes around six hours to complete with more than 805 different interaction opportunities, which are randomised so no two experiences
are the same. “We’ve been told that it is rather intensive, but students said they prefer to be overwhelmed in a risk-free environment, than to be overwhelmed behind the wheel.” Mr Bermingham said most students didn’t complete the test in a six-hour block, but rather progressed through different stages over a 12-month period before unlocking the final pass/ fail quiz. “In order to pass they must first complete various challenges around road rules, the effects of alcohol and speeding, driving under the influence of drugs, the importance of seat belts, creating their own risk profile and what the values are of being a better driver,” he said. “Along the way, they will also see and hear the true-life stories of people affected by fatal accidents, including paramedics, firefighters and the loved one’s victims leave behind. “Queensland researchers also appear in video clips to explain details, like why our brains can’t cope with texting and driving, how alcohol impairs judgement and how seatbelts save lives.” The change in testing comes after Queensland Government research revealed drivers under the age of 24 were
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Queensland’s most atrisk road users and 60 percent more likely to be involved in a serious crash than mature drivers. “We really want to change young drivers’ attitudes towards the Fatal Five and hopefully see a reduction in fatalities and driving offences,” Mr Bermingham said. “Throughout testing, we found that teens just don’t understand how much being on the phone affects their reaction times and stopping distances.” RACQ Principal Road Safety Advisor Joel Tucker said he applauded the new test’s digital capabilities and focus on multiple safety areas. “The longer, more competency-based testing process should help ensure that novice drivers gain a better understanding of each topic,” he said. “Driving a car is a dangerous thing to do, so learners need to have a solid knowledge base, pay attention and drive to the conditions every time they get behind the wheel.” Mr Tucker said parents must also be proactive in their children’s journey to gain a license and drive, whether it be through supervised hours or choosing the right car to drive. “Giving your kids the
100 hours of supervised practice in the Learner licence stage is one of the most important things you can do to help them be safer on the roads, and it will help keep them safer throughout their driving life,” he said. “There’s also a major flaw in the logic of giving your kids a cheap old car ‘because they’ll probably crash it’ – you want your kids to survive, and they are more likely to crash because of their inexperience, so let them use your newest and safest car.”

MAREEBA UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB
Come & Run with the Bulls in 2018! President’s welcome to start of football season
Mareeba United Football Club president Remo Terranova is looking forward to a great year of football for the Mareeba Bulls.
As the 2018 football season gets into full swing I would like to welcome new and old players from our junior’s right through to seniors. The club has signed almost 250 players for the coming year and in my first year as president the committee I feel we are on the right track to win some trophies right across all competitions. From a personal point of view my aim is to have as many players who are passionate about football playing the game they love.
With six senior teams this year including a ladies team, two second divisions teams, reserves and premier, plus a youth division which the club has not had for some time, we feel confident that this will be a successful one. Football is the world game and we encourage everyone to have a good time, respect the rules and play fair. I would encourage everyone to come along to our first home game this weekend as we take on the Leichhardt Lions in all senior divisions starting at 1pm.

MAREEBA UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB
Come & Run with the Bulls in 2018!
Premier side young but able say coaches
Premier Mens coaches Marcello Savaglio and Angelo Tatti.
Mareeba United Football Club’s premier side has undergone some major changes since the last season resulting in new coaches and an almost entirely new team of players. Alex Srhoj’s departure from the coaching position at the end of last year has seen Marcello Savaglio and Angelo Tatti step into the hot seats and face a huge challenge straight off the bat with a young team made up of mostly reserve grade players and two new recruits. “It’s pretty much a new team,” said Savaglio. “We started with three players on the weekend that were in the last game of last season, the rest are all made up from resy players and a couple of imports from Cairns. “A lot of them are new to the senior comp. We’ve got three players from last year’s reserve grade team that basically made
their debut for the season. There’s one player from Atherton – he played second division last year. So it’s a big step for them to comp up and play premier league soccer.” It’s a tough stance to begin the season from, but confidence is high and new recruits Darcy McCormack from Innisfail United Football Club and Justin Sabbidin from Cairns have brought some experience to the young team. “The new imports bring a lot of energy, a lot of skill-wise on the field,” said Tatti. “They’re experienced and good leaders. Talking to the boys and helping them out on the pitch, it’s a new team.” The coaches both think the premier side will have a competitive year, despite the loss of some key players. “There will probably be a bit of a building phase

I hope to carry that knowledge on through. We’ll just be doing a lot of planning and getting the boys ready. “We try and mix things up. Keep training intense but enjoyable at the same time. That’s the main thing that we’re trying to do.” Looking ahead to the season, the coaches are aiming for a solid result. “We want to improve www.mareebamazda.com.au from last year,” said Sava-

Mareeba Lions take out annual bowls comp ON Friday night the Mareeba Lions lawn bowls teams became the local champions winning the annuals service clubs Lawn Bowls shield. Competition was fierce, but the other competitors simply could not match the precision of the Mareeba Lions.
The service club challenge is held each year between local clubs – Mareeba Rotary, Dimbulah Lions and Mareeba Lions. Mareeba Rotary came in third, 2017 winners Dimbulah Lions came second, with Mareeba Lions taking home the 2018 shield. A good night of fellow-
ship and sport was had with a great meal was served up by Mareeba Bowls Club prior to the game. “It has been reported that some less fit members of the Lions team are having trouble with sore limbs and a trip to the team masseuse may be required,” said a Mareeba Lion.

AVS’ U10-11 kids with their runners-up medals.
Mareeba based football academy AVS, enjoyed a break through weekend over the last two days of the school holidays, participating in the FNQ Youth Cup held at Barlow Park over April 15 and 16. AVS was invited to nominate a U10/11 side and the U13/14 side in the competition for the respective age brackets with academies coming from as far away as Sydney. Futboltec and Mongo football made the trip north, along with Football Centre of Excellence from Brisbane, the Mackay Crusaders representative teams, GoFull90 from Townsville and hosts Caravella Football Academy from Cairns. The kids from Mareeba, Atherton and Dimbulah were amongst some of the finest football talent from all around the country. Both teams played five games on the Sunday with the U10/11’s only losing one game to the big boys
Futboltec, along the way enjoying wins over Mackay, Mongo football, GF90 and Caravella FA, finishing second on the group stage. The older boys had a tough day at the office on the Sunday, up against some very strong talented teams from Sydney, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns, but regrouped on Sunday to draw 4-4 with Caravella, going down on Penalties and were 3-2 up against Mackay with only minutes left, but ended up going down 4-3 in extra time. It was a big learning experience said AVS head coach Alex Srhoj, “The U13-14 boys found it tough on the Saturday, but they regrouped on Sunday and showed they could match it, it was a huge learning experience, fast, strong and very technical football, but that is what we were here for, the opportunity to play at a high level against talent from all around the coun-
try.” Srhoj stated. It was the U10-11 kids that took the competition by storm on the Monday, turning a few heads with a 4-1 win in the semi final against Mongo football Sydney, lining up a rematch in the grand final against the big boys from Sydney, Futbolec. Only 24 hours earlier they taught the AVS kids a lesson with a 8-2 win, but in the final it was a different story with the team made up of kids from Mareeba, Dimbulah and Atherton held their own and took the game to the Sydney kid. In a very tough and competitive match, the scores were locked at 2-2 with only minutes remaining, but Futboltec found the breakthrough to win 3-2. According to Srhoj, the growth of the kids over the weekend was extraordinary and great to be able to see. “The kids just kept growing with every game, as their confidence grew, so
PAGE 22 The Express, Wednesday, April 25, 2018
did their belief and the way they recovered from the 8-2 loss on the Saturday to force the same team all the way in the final and only go down 3-2 was just amazing to watch” Srhoj stated. “It was an amazing opportunity for the kids and that is what we are all about, more development and more opportunities.” Young Dimbulah 10 year old Cooper Kennedy lit the cup on fire, taking out the Golden Boot in the U10-11 competition, turning a few heads scoring 21 goals over seven games. Srhoj is now looking forward to taking the kids to another level, seeing firsthand what the level of the city kids are at, there is no reason why the “boys and girls from the Bush” should not reach the same standards. Mareeba local, 13 year old Liam Waters, competed in the third round of the Motostars road racing competition in the senior category at Toowomba over the weekend. Rain threatened to affect the weekend with riders changing to wet tyres on the Saturday for the practice sessions. Liam had a lowside crash in the wet but he and his bike escaped relatively undamaged. Sunday arrived with perfect weather and with Liam qualifying second against local Toowoomba rider Tom Brown in morning session. In the first race Liam had a good start and fought to hold onto Tom but was unable to fight for first place coming home second. In the second race Liam slipped to third by the first corner after a poor start. On the sixth corner of the first lap Liam made a move up the inside under brakes of the other rider and was able to make the pass stick.
Unfortunately, with the time lost fighting for second position Tom was able to open a lead that wasn’t able to be breached over the rest of the race. A nice start in the third race saw Liam initially put Tom under some pressure with Liam pushing hard. Liam rode consistently and finished the day with second in the last race and overall. “After a rough Saturday in the wet I was glad the sun came out for the Sun-
day and was happy with my performance during the races. “Tom is a great racer and I am really enjoying the Motostars series.” Liam will be racing again on April 28th at the Mako Trac in Mareeba as part of the Interclub series between the Whitsunday Motorsports club, Road Racing Association of Townsville and the FNQ Road Racing Club. You can follow Liam on facebook, – Liam Waters Racing.

of play. But the rest of the half belonged to the Roosters who hit the line with four tries to take a 22-10 lead to the break. Yarrabah scored again soon after the restart but from here their discipline went out the window and the Roosters quickly took control on the back of a high penalty count. Three
conversions from Nigel Woodleigh and a try to Ned Blackman pushed the Roosters ahead 32-16 and sealed the points in a tough contest. Results of other CDRL first grade games played – Mossman 82 v Edmonton 16, Innisfail 18 v Suburbs 13, Tully 34 v Mareeba 2, Brothers 32 v Ivanhoes
16. Points table after three rounds – Brothers 6, Tully 4, Mossman 4, Innisfail 4, Atherton 4, Kangaroos 4, Yarrabah 2, Ivanhoes 2, Mareeba 0, Suburbs 0, Edmonton 0. This Sunday the Atherton Roosters play Kangaroos away at Vico Oval, while the Gladiators take on Brothers at home.
Bulls still finding their feet in league A new Mareeba Bulls outfit is still finding their feet in the FNQ Premier league, going down 4-0 to arch rivals the Stratford Dolphins on Saturday night. The Bulls went into the match smarting from last weekend’s 6-1 loss and looked the sharper side in the opening exchanges. But the home side lit up the match with only their first real chance when Dolphins left winger let fly from twenty yards to give Bulls custodian Adrian Vedelago no chance to open up a 1-0 lead. Stratford got their second only moments later with Jamie Gosling dancing his way past a couple of Bulls defenders before being brought down inside the penalty area with a clumsy challenge, and Joe
Rusch made no mistake from the penalty area going ahead 2-0. Then moments later Gosling ran riot again through the bulls defence to give the home side a 3-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes. It could have been more if not for Vedelago in the Bulls goal pulling off a string of fine saves. Being 3-0 down seemed to fire up the Bulls and they finished the half looking the stronger side, but were unable to find a breakthrough before the break. In the second period, it was the away side that again looked the stronger side, but really unable to force any really strong scoring opportunities. Apart from a 30 yard bullet from Ben Stabile, the Dolphins keeper was never really forced into much work,
despite the Bulls enjoying majority of the possession. As the game went on the Bulls turned to long ball football, opening up to much space in the middle of the park, allowing the Dolphins back in the game and Gosling made it 4-0 with only a few minutes left on the clock. It is a case of hard work and effort that is just not enough for the Bulls right now, the effort is there, the work rate is there, but the orange and black boys are just lacking that piece of quality at key moments throughout the game. A lot of new and young players are finding out the difference of class at the premier level, but they are close and once they settle and find their belief things will turn around quickly.
In other grades, it was a case of deja-vu for the Bulls reserves who totally dominated the match, but were unable to take all three points drawing 1-1. Damien Wildman equalized that game with the last kick of the ball. The Bulls premier ladies and youth sides were the shining light at Stratford on Saturday, with both sides still undefeated this season. The U18 boys played out a 4-2 win and after losing Serg Battistin to injury early on, the team recovered to go two from two in the league. Meanwhile the ladies fought hard for a impressive 4-0 win over the Dolphins with Chelsea Manitta and Jeannae kalinau scoring two each. But it was a fighting team effort
with only 12 girls available the ladies dug deep and worked hard for each other and kept the clean sheet for the first time in over a year due to work rate of the entire team. On Friday night both of the clubs second division and first division teams remained unbeaten. Youngster Dylan Cummings gave the first division boys a 88th minute win over arch rivals the Atherton Eagles, meanwhile the Bulls 2nd division boys travelled down to the Marlin Coast Rangers and came away with a impressive 2-2 draw. This weekend the Mareeba Bulls return home with the first Saturday night home game of the year against the Leichhardt Lions and everyone is invited to come and support.
