Attract more tourists

Over 790,000 tourists visit the Tablelands every year and local businesses can find out how to attract more of them via a workshop happening at the end of the month. Michael Nelson from Pinnacle Tourism Marketing and Renee Dembowski from Social Butterfly Marketing will be offering advice and information to local companies at the on Tuesday, August 29 at the Jackaroo Motel, Mareeba. Beaurepaires in Mareeba is one local business that makes the most of the steady influx of visitors. “Occasionally they buy some new wheels but more often than not they need to replace their tyres,” said Mareeba assistant manager Kyle Meek. “We’re fully equipped for any vehicle that comes in.” Networking with other businesses is an important part of good service, according to Mr Meek, who said his staff are happy to point a tourist in the right direction if they’re looking for a local mechanic or auto-electrician. “If there’s a tourist already over there getting work done on their vehicle and the mechanic sees they need some tyres, they’ll send them here, so it works both ways,” he said. The event is free and kicks off at 5.30pm.

Bike bus a hit with Malanda school kids By Rebecca Wallis

A Tablelands primary school Principal is encouraging children to ride their bikes to school safely with a ‘bike bus’ initiative. Malanda State School principal Mark Allen implemented the weekly Bikebus which gets children to meet at stops along a designated route every Wednesday morning. They then ride together to the school. “The Bikebus gives children the freedoms we experienced as kids riding our bikes, in a safe, supportive way,” Mr Allen said. The Bikebus is a formalised State Government program which encourages children to be active and safe by travelling to school on bikes in an organised group. “Malanda SS has an active SAFE-ST committee, which is a team made up of devote community members, who meet and work toward safe school travel for all children,” Mr Allen said. The school also has a ‘Scooter Bus’ which operates on a Friday morning, allowing the children to ride scooters to school safely.

Cook Shire council gets slammed Cairns MP Rob Pyne took explosive claims about Cook Shire Council to parliament last week, along with a dirt dossier against other councils throughout Queensland. Claiming he was exposing corruption in local government, the politician called for Cook Shire Council to be placed in administration. “I believe that there is nothing more important than exposing corruption in government administration

in the state of Queensland,” Mr Pyne said. “I did not sign up to ‘look the other way’ while corruption prospers. “I will not be a monkey for hire to throw my hand in the air when told to do so, that is why I left the ALP.” But Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott has responded stating the MP’s comments are nothing but “vexatious lies”. “Rob Pyne is not our representative, he is build-

ing himself a platform in the lead up to the election by knocking local government and giving himself something to campaign about,” Cr Scott said. “Rob, who I have had a friendly working relationship with, didn’t even do Council the courtesy of a quick phone call to check the information he has been given.” Admitting the council has in the past had problems, Cr Scott said Mr Pyne’s comments were damaging and hurtful to

members of the council individually. “One of the more hurtful allegations was a fabricated email, allegedly written by a Council staff member, who is clearly identified by their job title, which was not redacted from the file,” Cr Scott said. “That email was the subject of an independent external investigation, instigated by Council, and it has been proven as a fabrication.” The allegations against Cook Shire Council includ-

ed breaching local government regulations, outstanding native title issues, overspending and mismanagement, staff bullying and more. Mr Pyne was told in parliament to address his issues to the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC). Local ratepayers said they were supportive of Mr Pyne and his decision to bring hold the council accountable. “Our association believes that an ICAC style inquiry into local

government in Queensland is needed as the present system is broken and in urgent need for review and change,” said Toni Leigh from the Cook Shire Ratepayers and Residents Associatio. “How many more Councils does Mr Pyne need to expose before our State Government acts? “We call on the Queensland Parliament to act immediately: appoint an administrator to remedy maladministration in Cook Shire Local Government.”

Murder sparks new parole law

The Queensland government last week passed the ‘No Body, No Parole’ law that was instigated after the murder of Mareeba man Bruce Schuler. Mr Schuler disappeared more than five years ago while prospecting near Palmerville Station, northwest of Cairns. Two people were convicted of his murder but his body has never been found. His wife Fiona Splitt said that passing of ‘No Body, No Parole’ marked almost two years of dedicated advocacy. “This legislation not only acknowledges my

Crocs sighted in local waters An aerial view of Lake Mitchell showing the 4m saltie. INSET: EHP officers in a helicopter inspecting Mareeba waterways.

TWO large saltwater crocodiles have been spotted by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP) in waterways close to Mareeba. DEHP conducted an aerial inspection of the region last Tuesday (August 8) looking for crocs in Two Mile Creek, Mareeba Wetlands, sections of the Barron River, an artificial lake known as Lake Mitchell and various smaller dams. One of the crocs seen at

Lake Mitchell was 4m in length. “EHP wildlife officers will now contact the property owner to seek permission to access the land and remove the crocodile,” EHP’s Acting Executive Director for Conservation and Biodiversity Lindsay Delzoppo said. “Wildlife officers also spotted a crocodile, just over 2 metres in length, at Two Mile Creek. “Wildlife officers are

also working to remove a 60cm estuarine crocodile reported in a farm dam at Mareeba. “While there are known to be freshwater crocodiles in the Two Mile Creek area Mareeba is not recognised as typical habitat for estuarine crocodiles,” Mr Delzoppo said. The Crocodile Management Plan had been amended in June to allow for the targeting of crocodiles for removal within parts of the

Mareeba Shire. “EHP officers will respond to any crocodile sighting reported in this new zone by inspecting the area as soon as practical and targeting any estuarine crocodile they find there for removal,” Mr Delzoppo said. “The rest of the Mareeba Shire remains in Zone E, a General Management Zone in which any crocodile displaying dangerous behaviour will be targeted for removal.

The helicopter inspection will be followed by day and night groundbased patrols. “Winter is the best time of the year to conduct aerial inspections for estuarine crocodiles,” Mr Delzoppo said. “They are ‘cold-blooded’ animals and at this time of the year they need to spend time each day basking in the sun to regulate their body temperature, making them much easier to spot from the air.”

family’s grief and loss but all loved ones of murder victims, especially when we are unable to lay our loved ones to rest,” Ms Splitt said. “It’s been a long emotional journey to get to this day. I thank the Palaszczuk Government and everyone else who has supported me through this journey.” The laws will be retrospective and apply to people convicted of: murder; manslaughter; accessory after the fact, conspiring to murder; unlawful striking causing death; and misconduct with a corpse.

Help for Italian Centrelink users Around 1000 pensioners across the Far North were affected by the retirement of an Italian translator at Centrelink which they used to fill in forms and query letters. But thanks to Mareeba woman Carmel Seravalle, they now have someone to turn to. The translator was based in Mareeba but travelled as far as Innisfail and Cairns regularly to help those who did not have English as their first language. “They kept sending the forms away incorrectly and didn’t understand what was going on,” said Mrs

Seravalle, who has been offering unofficial help to locals for the past few months. Starting on the first Wednesday of September Mrs Seravalle will be opening her home at 151 Walsh Street once a fortnight for a few hours to anyone who needs help. “It’s something I can do for the community so I’m happy to help,” she said. The service will run 8.30am to 12pm fortnightly at Mrs Seravalle’s house until someone official steps into the role at Centrelink. Voices from remote Queensland A book based on the women who live and work in the Gulf of Carpentaria is being launched next month. Half the women live and work on the vast cattle stations of remote northwest Queensland as owners, managers or stock and station workers. The others work in businesses, tourism, education, health and aviation, or live and work on fishing boats out in the Gulf. Gulf women are selfsufficient, generous, and cope with almost anything that life and the environment throws at them; floods, drought, sickness, emergencies ... all the difficulties that come with running a cattle station and its staff, a fishing business, a family being raised and educated, or an enterprise

far from anywhere. They are forthright, outspoken and don’t take kindly to being told by outsiders what they can and cannot do. But what they can do is love their soul country, manage the challenges of isolation, the Wet, and the totally unexpected. Author Bron Blake, facilitated the Gulf Women anthology. She and the contributors agreed that all work would be voluntary so all profits could return to the Gregory region for community projects. This powerful book gives women a voice to tell their own stories of managing distant stations and stock camps, handling terrible accidents, floods, bushfires, and killing droughts. Of nurses, teachers, mothers (food and essential sup-

plies ordered from far away centres: delivery weeks or months), rearing families and educating their children through Mount Isa School of the Air. There are stories of new mothers on properties isolated and inaccessible for months in the Wet, women giving birth at home with only neighbours to assist, reminiscences from last century and World War II, and accounts of fishing in the Gulf in sometimes unimaginable conditions. ‘They told me that there was: “Nothing to write about, really.” It was brushed off with: “So ordinary it’s boring.” “Just what you do.” “Just life.” I hope these women see in print, for all time, just how extraordinary they are. How proud we are of them,” said Ms Blake.

BUTCHERY Cadets marching at the 72nd anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day.

A day to remember

By Rebecca Wallis

SEVENTY two years ago on August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered to allied forces marking the end of World War II. Nearly 40,000 Australian were killed during the war and 100,000 wounded. It is a significant part of our history and is remembered each year in memorials all over Australia and locally at Rocky Creek War Memorial Park.

This year the anniversary was marked on Sunday, August 13 with a host of dignitaries, servicemen and women and guest speakers. Veteran solder Phil English from Malanda gave a moving speech about the effect the war had on the Tablelands and left a poignant reminder about the legacy the war has left us. “Let us remember those who made the supreme sacrifice in fighting for Australia in all the wars that

we’ve been involved in since federation,” he said. “Our servicemen and women have fought and died for our freedom. Yet freedom today is under great pressure, freedom is dear to all of us. Let our convictions remain strong and our purpose firm so we may pass onto our children both the fruits of freedom and the will to preserve it. “There is no greater love than this than someone should lay down their life

for their friends, their bodies are buried in peace but their names live forever. “Today let us dedicate ourselves to the cause of justice, freedom and peace. “I urge everyone to be loyal to the ideals that have made our country great. Be proud to be Australian.” Other key speakers on the day included Atherton cadet Amanda Mazlin and RAAF Flight Lt Kristina Filippi. Military, ex-servicemen and women,

cadets and emergency services personnel marched in unison before a one minute silence and servicemen plaques were named on the Memorial Wall. After the official part of the day was over, attendees were invited on a tour of the Igloo by the Atherton Rotary Club. The event was hosted by Tablelands Regional Council and the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park Advisory Committee.

Going for gold

Geoff Shannon looking intently for gold at the North Queensland Miners Association Gold Panning Championships on August 12.

It’s an event that harks back to a bygone era where thousands came to the Tablelands region searching for gold. Now the history is preserved every year at the Gold Panning Championships – where amateurs and professionals can sift side by side looking for gleaming bits of treasure. Instead of going home with bags of gold, however, the competitors get a beautiful trophy and prizes.. Held on the same day as the Mareeba markets on Saturday (August 12), the event always attracts a crowd of onlookers and those looking to have a go. Classes are split into

categories including Speciality Panning, Juniors, Novices, Skilled, Vetereans, Open and Teams and there’s a raffle and photo competition too.

Ray Wallace came 2nd in the Veterans Gold Panning contest and 3rd in the Open category.

Members of the new Maize Festival committee Tanya Robertson, Alicia Jaggard, Kristy Higham, Amanda Cunningham and Jacqui Webb.

Maize Festival’s Modern revival By Rebecca Wallis

FIFTY-five years after the first ever Maize Festival, the event has been given a massive shake up. Still holding on to its community roots, the festival has now been given a modern twist to attract the younger generation. Happening in Atherton on August 26, the biggest change to the festival is the introduction of ‘ambassadors’, as opposed to its usual Maize Queens. Since the festival began in 1962, the traditional queen

contest has provided a platform for young women to get involved in the local community and help raise funds to feed back into local charities. “We wanted to shake things up a bit and make it more relevant,” said committee secretary Alicia Jaggard. “We introduced the new ambassadors program and opened it up to guys as well.” Ambassadors raise money for a local charity of their choosing and take part in workshops and events such as a Leadership Development Workshop.

Memorial planned for pilot killed in Biboohra Proceeds donated from this year’s Mareeba Military Muster (August 5-6) will go towards a long overdue memorial dedicating the tragic loss of a US Flyer that was killed on the 9th August 1943, near Biboohra. Second Lieutenant Andrew Kendel Duke was piloting a P-38 Lightning Serial No 43-2200, that was attached to the 5th Air Force, 475th Fighter Group, 431st Fighter Squadron . At 16.05hrs on the above date 2nd Lt Duke experienced engine trouble during flight over Mareeba, during his flight from Amberley to New Guinea. Due to this engine trouble Duke requested to land at Mareeba airfield but was advised to circle as the airstrip was being utilised at the time, but to return to land shortly there after. As Lt Duke circled, the aircraft experienced further

serious engine difficulties and it quickly became apparent Duke was unable to land at the airfield. Duke decided to attempt a single engine landing north from Mareeba to Biboohra. The aircraft began to lose altitude, and tragically crashed near the small township of Biboohra. Duke was killed instantly suffering horrific internal injuries and burns from the aircraft crash, and post explosion. The Memorial will stand within the garden area within the confines of the Biboohra Cash Store and Service Station along the Mulligan Highway. An official service is also being planned for August 9, 2018, exactly 75 years after the tragic event. Coordinator Michael Musumeci said: “Once again the support has been overwhelming from so many people, including the

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

“We’ve incorporated the workshops so they can get something out of it as well,” said Miss Jaggard. “It gives them a skill they can take away from the festival.” The committee has almost doubled in numbers this year with a lot of people outside of the core group offering help and support in different areas. “Everyone loves the festival and wants to keep it going,” said Miss Jaggard. “But we never get any help. We’ve had these ideas for a long time and now we’ve got some new mem-

bers we have been able to put a lot of the changes in place.” The layout of the festival day has also changed. Jack Street will be full of food vendors selling delicious edible items. Outside the Men’s Shed at the end of Main Street will be a display of vintage agricultural machinery and there will be free face painting for the kids and a petting zoo. Along with the festival procession the 2017 Ambassador will be announced, followed by live music, entertainment and dance performances.

Mareeba Shire Council. “The history of Mareeba needs to be not only highlighted to our visitors, but also to the younger generations, so the sacrifices of so many can be remembered.”

Relatives of Lt Duke have been notified in the USA, and are overwhelmed that the memory of 2nd Lt Andrew Kendel Duke will be remembered, and are so grateful.

Project helps the homeless By Rebecca Wallis

If you are young, indigenous and homeless, getting back on your feet can be tough. Which is why a Community Housing program aimed at teaching cooking, budgeting and healthy eating skills has been such a lifeline to a group of young women. Mareeba Community Housing manager Patricia Goldfinch said the six week program has been a huge success. “It’s really around them connecting with community, connecting with each other. But also looking at low cost ways they can provide food and items,” she said. “The girls said what they got out of it was around confidence-building and budgeting and that they also really felt that sense of community and that they were really getting that interacting with community elders. “And the community elders actually enjoyed it as well, so they’ve asked when can we do it again we will run and we’ll get their input as well.” The girls practiced

cooking recipes from their families as well as other practical and healthy family meals that are cost effective. At the end of the program they created and designed a booklet called ‘Cooking Together’ which lists those recipes for them to keep. It was launched officially last Friday to coincide with Homeless Awareness Week (August 7-13). “We had three indigenous community elders came in and they cooked with the young ones and it was really that sense of belonging that we found from the younger girls,” said Mrs Goldfinch. “The community elders brought in recipes and the young girls thought about things that their mums have cooked. After that we decided to bring it all together in a little booklet so they actually then have the recipes. It’s a memento for them to take with them.” The program will be run again in November offering help and advice on planning for Christmas. Firies warn of looming bushfire season in FNQ

Bushfire season is less than a month away and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) is urging landowners across the far north to act now to decrease the risk. Bushfire Safety Officer Michael Spartalis said targeted mitigation activities had escalated across the region as the season draws closer and weather conditions remain favourable. “So far we are happy with the progress that has been made with our preseason mitigation here in the far north, and the response of the communities has been positive,” Mr Spartalis said. “There is, however,

plenty of work still to be done, to prepare ahead of the season and this is where we need the help of all landowners.” Mr Spartalis said weather conditions meant it was critical that residents prepared their properties now. “It is still fairly green along the Region’s coastline, however as we head further west and to the Cape, vegetation is drying out rapidly,” he said. “This means it is prime time to reduce fuel loads, particularly in these areas, while conditions are favourable.” Mr Spartalis said it was important for landowners

to obtain a permit if they plan to light fires on their property bigger than two metres in any direction. “The Permit to Light a Fire system ensures burns are conducted at an appropriate time of the year, are suitably managed and emergency services are notified,” he said. Mr Spartalis also advised those burning to keep their neighbours in the loop. “Keeping everyone informed also reduces the likelihood of us receiving Triple Zero calls, meaning we can focus on allocating resources where they are needed most,” he said.

The LAND Growers convinced they can’t win importation fight Local lime farmers are confident that the importation of limes from overseas will be allowed to go ahead, despite their attempts to stop it. After a meeting last month, the Mareeba Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association sent off a submission to the Federal Government’s Department of Agriculture outlining their concerns with their draft review into the importation of Tahitian limes from the South Pacific. But Mareeba lime

ers.” A submission was sent to Government last week stating a list of disease and pest threats from the lime imports. “From our perspective, it is simply unacceptable that the Department of Agriculture would be willing to take such a risk which could have the potential to devastate the Australian lime industry,” it read. “As growers, we are concerned whether these pacific nations have the expertise and necessary bi-

osecurity protocols in place to prevent a pest or disease outbreak in Australia. “We simply cannot afford to contend with an even greater biosecurity and economic threat to locally grown limes and strongly urge the department to reject this proposal to import limes from the South Pacific.” The farmers are hoping to get Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce to come to Mareeba and meet growers to discuss the issue and get him board.

Knuth says voting down milk logo bill is a ‘sick joke’ KAP’s Shane Knuth warned people not to be fooled by the LNP and the Palaszczuk Government uniting to vote down the Fair Milk Price Logo bill. “This is a disgusting slap in the face by the government,” Mr Knuth said. “They pretend they are heroes, but all they have done is announce they will spend three years developing a scheme that we could have had implemented tonight. By then it will be too little too late. “It’s a sick joke. Based on the current rate of dairy farmers going under, another 210 farmers will have

to walk off their properties by the time the government’s pilot comes to fruition,” Shane said. KAP’s Sustainable Queensland Dairy Production (Fair Milk Price Logos) Bill 2016 would have created a voluntary scheme where milk processors could put a logo on milk bottles if they had paid the farmer a fair price for that milk. “When people go to the shop to buy milk, most of them want to buy milk that farmers have been paid a fair price for, and they are happy to pay a bit extra for that. But there is no way

for them to know which milk that is. We could have changed that tonight. It would have given consumers the power to support dairy farmers, and gone a long way to saving our rapidly dying dairy industry. But no. The government and LNP won’t support anything that isn’t their idea. I will tell you right now, dairy farmers do not care whose idea this is. They just need change, and they need it now, not in three years,” Shane said. In the year 2000, Queensland had 1500 dairy farmers, there are now just 430.

farmer Karen Muccignat said she believes the government will allow the importation to go ahead, potentially affecting her livelihood and the $31million local citrus industry. “It’s going to be a hard one to pull up,” said Mrs Muccignat, an executive of the Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association. “There’s a lot of politics going on with free trade. It’s part of the trade agreement, which we understand, but not at the expense of Australian farm-

Mossman Mill plant availability was below budget for Week 9 but weekly throughput was above target. The factory processed 43,980 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 323 tonnes/hour. One major down time occurred late in the week which was the failure of two superheater loop tubes in the Thompson Boiler. This repair required the boiler to be cooled before repairs could be undertaken. No. 1 Mill turbine governor had an electrical fault that also caused a lengthy stop. The Mill has continued producing JA brand sugar this week. • Total for week: 43,980 tonnes • CCS for week: 12.95 • Total cane crushed to date: 340,932 tonnes • CCS average to date: 12.20 • 2017 crop estimate: 930,000 tonnes

Stingrays’ impressive victory

The Stingrays senior men’s side registered a convincing 55 to 29 victory over Barras, in last week’s round of Mareeba Basketball fixtures. Barras showed encouraging form during the first quarter and appeared set to challenge their more fancied opponents, trailing narrowly by 8 to 11 when the quarter time hooter sounded. However Stingrays took control after quarter time and were never in danger of defeat, to register an excellent win by 26 points. Jake Priestly who scored 18 points, together with David Hawke, Jacob Bishop and Declan Ebner being instrumental in Stingrays success. For the Barras side, Lachlan Anthony and Tom Harvey played strongly. While young Zayd Myrteza having played well in junior fixtures earlier that night, top scored for Barras with 11 points. The other men’s fixture

played last week saw last season’s top side Red Devils defeat Blue Angels by 76 to 61. With Spare Parts gaining a hard fought win over Siggy Butts by 44 to 36. In the Junior fixtures, highly promising juniors were seen in action when senior high school division sides Andy’s Angels and Hawkes Prey clashed in a very entertaining encounter. Victory going to Andy’s Angels by 42 to 30. However Hawkes Prey juniors indicated that they are capable of gaining their share of success during the season. Showing out well for Andy’s Angels were Zac Myrteza and Jake Priestly. While Zayd Myrteza dominated the scoring with his 21 points. Jonah Hastie contributed 15 points for the Hawkes Prey combination, gaining good support from Declan Ebner and Riley Struber.

Wins continue for Roosters Bulls cut down Innisfail

Roosters centre Joel Turaga.

Atherton Roosters prop forward Paul Alofi scored three tries in his sides 36-26 win over the Mossman Sharks on Saturday night at the Mossman Showground. It was the Roosters fourth straight win and fifth from their last six games. The Sharks started strongly to lead 10-0 after only eight minutes of play before the Roosters clicked into gear to front the contest 22-16 at the break. Two of Alofi’s tries came shortly after the restart and this pushed the Roosters further ahead 32-16. Mossman hit back with two tries but the Roosters regrouped to hold off the late challenge and secure the

Gators go down to Ivanhoe’s

points. Giant centre Joel Turaga also had a strong game crossing for two tries while Nigel Woodleigh added another to give him ten tries from five games. The Roosters will be going for their fifth straight win in the competitions final round against ladder leaders Innisfail on Saturday. Atherton’s under 19 side remain in the semifinal hunt but must win this Saturday’s match with Innisfail. The final round Cairns District Rugby League premiership games are to be played this weekend with the Roosters hosting Innisfail in three grades from 4pm at Roosters Stadium.

It was a disappointing second last game of the season for the Gladiators after a 40-16 defeat to Ivanhoe’s on Friday night. The Mareeba A graders have held on to second place on the ladder just four points behind the leaders as they head into their last game this weekend against Suburbs. Innisfail Brothers are currently top of the table on 38 points. The Reserves also lost Friday night against Ivanhoes 30-16.

The Mareeba Bulls have moved back into the finals contention with a hard fought 3-2 win over the Innisfail Cutters on Sunday in Mareeba. The Bulls headed into the match knowing three points was the only thing needed if they were to get back in the finals hunt and they were made to work for it. Despite being 2-0 up with 25 minutes to play, it was also most deja vu for the Bulls fans as the Cutters fought back to 2-1, then the Bulls went 3-1 up, only for the awayside to claw back to 3-2. The win now sets up a tantalising match this Saturday night against the Southside Comets. While the Comets need a win to secure the premiership, the Bulls will need the win to stay in the top four. The Bulls came out

of the blocks a bit slow on Sunday taking about 25 minutes to settle in and with neither side finding the back of the net the scores was locked at nil all at halftime. In the second half the Bulls came out firing with Steven Cater scoring a quickfire double to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead in the 55th and 65th minutes. The Cutters then got one back in the 70th minute, but Paul Ruiz got the Bulls to 3-1 up in the 84th minute, before the Cutters again clawed one back in the 88th minute. The last few minutes played at a frantic pace with the Cutters last play of the game hitting the crossbar and bouncing out to finish the match 3-2 to the Bulls. In the mens reserves grade, the Bulls fought back from 2-nil down to
