Students’ chalk art experience Hannah Macleod, Jeannie-May Lyall and Natalia Westwood (pictured) were just three of the students that took part in a 3D chalk art workshop last week with international artist Jenny McCracken. Jenny was in Mareeba for the inaugural Mareeba Arts Festival which took place at Arnold Park on Saturday. Her visit included leaving behind a legacy of her work – a stunning ‘trick-of-the-eye’ mural on the wall outside the IGA building on Atherton Street. For more head to P5 & P7.

Farmers incensed By Rebecca Wallis

A vote of no confidence in Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) was carried by 160 rate payers at a public meeting at the Atherton International Club last Wednesday, despite the fact that council claim the issue is out of their hands.

The meeting was supposed to be an opportunity for the property owners to get a clearer understanding of why rates had increased so significantly for some land holders. But TRC mayor Joe Paronella and his councillors declined to attend, stating he will be holding a private meeting with a few

delegates from the group at a later date. As reported in last week’s Express newspaper, properties in the TRC shire were valued earlier in the year by the Queensland Valuer-General, with some properties in the Category F – Primary Production area jumping up in value by over 90 per cent. In an open

letter to ratepayers published on the TRC website before the meeting early last week Cr Paronella stated: “This regulation stipulates that councils must calculate the rates for land by using the rateable value of the land.” (The letter can be read in full in our letters section on P10). Cr Paronella also said

that only a small number of ratepayers were heavily effected by the increases with fewer than half of valuations in the Primary Production section increasing and just over a quarter experiencing a decline in land value, therefore seeing their rates decrease. He also said that 30 per cent had little or no change

in their valuations. But attendees of the meeting claimed the rate rise was significant for the majority of them and that council should have capped the increases as it had been done in previous years. “This situation has brought stress, depression and anxiety to the people in the area,” said Jerry Micola

who chaired the meeting. “There is nothing stopping the council from cushioning the blow, but instead they keep deflecting the issue.” Les Preston is a solicitor from Malanda who represents many of the land holders affected. Continued P2

Kids playground opens at Mareeba Hospital

THERE were smiles all round as Mareeba Hospital’s long-awaited paediatric playground was officially opened last Wednesday. No one likes kids sick in hospital, but the new $140,000 playground will now help make their stay a little easier to bear. The playground was funded through the Mareeba Friends of the Foundation, a branch of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, fundraising specifically for the Mareeba Hospital. Mareeba Friends of the Foundation chair Ida Portella said the playground came about through a grant from the Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank, Mareeba Rotary and the Mareeba and District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, along with in kind donations from local businesses and the entire community. “The Mareeba Friends have worked on this project for more than four years and it is evident that we continue to receive overwhelming support. Our purpose is to raise funds to provide additional equipment which improves services for patients and staff at the Mareeba Hospital,” Ms Portella said. “We want to thank eve-

ryone that supports the Mareeba Friends and the hospital – from the large donors to the smaller ones – every bit counts.” Since 2009 more than $350,000 in equipment has been contributed to the Mareeba Hospital. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Board chairman Clive Skarott AM said that he was proud to see new facilities added to help improve the experience of the Mareeba hospital’s patients, both young and old. “The new playground will provide an appropriate place for children who are either visiting the Mareeba Hospital or who are inpatients to enjoy playing in its colourful and inviting surrounds.” Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore echoed the comments and thanked all involved in making this possible. “It’s amazing what we can do together,” said Mr Gilmore. “When a community group gets together for the right purpose and they bring others with them and they end up with an outcome like this which will serve our little ones and their families for years and years to come, it’s a wonderful thing.”

FUN TIMES: Mareeba Hospital’s long-awaited paediatric playground has finally opened. Nina Akselsen Grant from the Mareeba Friends of the Foundation celebrates with Eva and Max McLennan at the opening.

Farmers band together over council rates

From P1 “The council made the decision to put the rates up but none of us are receiving anymore services than we did this time last year,” he said. “I encourage everyone here to speak to their local councillor and let them know that if this is not corrected they will not have a job next year.” Ex-TRC councillor Len Curtis attended the meeting

and claimed that under a previous mayor, Jim Chapman, a similar situation occurred. The then council chose to cap the rates at 15 per cent. After the meeting a letter was sent to the council outlining the content of the meeting including that a vote of no confidence was carried unanimously. The group also planned to form a Ratepayers Action Group, planned to hold

a meeting with the Valuer General and are asking TRC to implement a Rates Advisory Committee. The letter is also asking TRC to adopt a three year average for valuations, adopt an amended budget and issue amended rates notices. If changes are not made the group is planning a tractor rally in the centre of Atherton in protest of the rate hike. “You’ve got to band to-

gether,” said Mr Micola to the room of concerned locals. “If you think it’s bad this year, trust me it will only get worse. “This doesn’t stop here tonight. This is just the start.” Cr Paronella stated in his letter that he empathised with the ratepayers and was willing to work with them to find a resolution. “Understandably, the impact that land valuations

have on rates calculations has angered some ratepayers,” he wrote. “I can assure you that your Council thought long and hard about minimising this impact to the majority ratepayers through our overall general rates increase.” Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth attended the meeting and said he was in talks with the Valuer-General over the issue. “The size of the rate rise

no doubt is understandable that everyone is very ropeable about this and believes that council needs to look at averaging out the rates to the different regions,” he said. “I have been communication with the Valuer General who is ready to assist any land owner that feels that there has been an over-valuation of their property and to go back to the drawing board.”

Mickayla’s plea gets answered By Natasha Srhoj

Mickayla Strudwick now has a new lease on life thanks to community support. Pictured with mum Kerrie Hare, friend Jamilah Hansen and teacher Michelle Burgess.

WHAT might not seem like a big deal to some is a life changer for others. 13 year old Mickayla Strudwick’s life has been changed forever thanks to the generous support from locals. Mickayla, who was born with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH), is confined to a wheelchair, but now has the one thing she has been craving most, independence. Earlier this year a call for help to get Mickayla a new motorised wheelchair

and portable oxygen concentrator was put out to the public and answer they did with thousands of dollars in donations flowing in from businesses, community groups and individuals from across Mareeba and Atherton. $18,000 was donated for the custom made wheelchair and the oxygen concentrator, valued at more than $6,000, was also donated to make Mickayla’s dream a reality – two things that have made all the difference to this bubbly year eight students life.

“I am so happy,” said Mickayla. “I have independence now, it has changed my life and my family’s,” “Mum cried when she found out.” Run by a smart watch, Mickayla can now move around at home and school and go where she wants to on her own – the independence every girl her age should have. The chair has smart drive technology and is much easier to manoeuvre, plus the oxygen machine is smaller, lighter and has a longer battery life.

“It’s all because of the local communities of Mareeba and Atherton she has this,” said Mareeba State High School’s head of Special Education Michelle Burgess. “She now goes out at lunch time, she goes wherever she wants to go. Before she was confined as she had to have an adult to push her everywhere.” Mickayla turns 14 at the end of this month and this is the best birthday present she could hope for. “Thank you for changing my life,” said Mickayla.

vision of appropriate staff accommodation in rural and remote areas was a vital part of delivering local health services. “Thanks to this State Government funding, the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service will be able to deliver pur-

pose-built accommodation for its staff,’’ Mr Dick said. “The availability of good quality accommodation also helps ensure local health services in rural and remote areas can continue to attract and retain permanent staff.’’ The recently devel-

oped Rural and Remote Workforce Strategy for Queensland identified staff accommodation as one of the critical aspects in the recruitment and retention of workforce in rural and remote areas. These works are all part of the government’s com-

mitment to maintaining and improving the delivery of health services in Queensland as part of the Rural and Regional Infrastructure Package. Four construction jobs will be supported over the life of the staff accommodation construction project.

$1.5m boost to Mareeba Hospital Mareeba Hospital will be the location of a new $1.5million staff accommodation building, the Palaszczuk Government has announced. Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick said the accommodation project was further evidence of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to the future of Mareeba Hospital. “This accommodation project will meet the needs of Mareeba Hospital staff and the growing Mareeba

community, now and into the future,” Mr Dick said. “Mareeba residents can be assured that the Palaszczuk Government has no plans to close or downgrade State health services at Mareeba Hospital, now or in the future and there are no plans to downgrade the Emergency Department.” Mr Dick said he was very disappointed that the Turnbull Government had not restored the $2.1 million funding that it ripped out of the Mareeba Hospi-

Labour candidate hits back at energy plan Labor candidate for Cook, Cynthia Lui has hit back at the LNP’s so-called plan for energy following a visit by Michael Hart last week. Ms Lui said the LNP had their head in the sand on the real job opportunities and energy certainty that renewables were helping provide in Queensland’s energy mix. Ms Lui said, “The LNP’s only had two solutions to lowering energy prices over the last three years. One is selling our power assets and the other one is building an expensive privately-owned coal fired power station.” “Everybody knows when you privatise assets, costs go up.” “You only need to look at the other states who have privatised their power assets to see their record price increases.” $770 million was reinvested to shield regional Queenslanders from the sort of price rises being faced by the rest of Australia. This saw a cut to the

recommended increase in prices by more than half. The Palaszczuk Government’s intervention means that the increase of 3.3 per cent in Queensland was the lowest in any mainland state in the national energy market, with other states seeing increases ranging from 9% to 20%. Ms Lui pointed to the record investment locally including the Mt Emerald Wind Farm, Lockhart River Project and the Ma-

reeba project announced last month. “Locally we are seeing real jobs created as well as well as projects that are helping power our region.” “The Palaszczuk Government’s energy policy has helped stabilise prices as well as increase investment in renewable energy.” “Now is not the time to turn our backs on renewable energy like the LNP propose.”

Students from Mareeba, Dimbulah and Kuranda spent three hours creating this 3D illusion of a rocket with help from professional artist Jenny McCracken.

High schoolers learn the art of 3D illusion WORLD-RENOWNED 3D illusion artist Jenny McCracken took a break from creating a mural on the wall of the IGA building in Mareeba to share her creative talent with a select group of young aspiring artists. Last Thursday, students from Mareeba State High School, Dimbulah State College and Kuranda District State College spent three hours at Mareeba State High School with the artist learning the tech-

nique of creating 3D illusion chalk art. Head of Visual and Performing Arts and Languages at Mareeba State High School Kylie Lambert said the students that took part in the workshop all expressed an interest in the experience. “It’s a fantastic opportunity because Jenny is showing them how to do it as they go along,” she said. “They’re using a single point perspective to create a visual illusion.”

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

The students created a rocket emerging from a hole in the ground. Chair of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) committee, Cr Angela Toppin said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the students. “Jenny McCracken has a broad range of experience across many mediums. She creates 3D pavement art, trompe l’oeil (trick of the eye) murals, portraits, visual minutes, commissioned works and sculptures just

to name a few,” Cr Toppin said. “These students are presented with a wonderful opportunity to learn from and interact with one of the world’s most talented artists.” The workshop is funded by RADF, a partnership between the State Government and Mareeba Shire Council to promote the arts and culture in regional Queensland. Queensland Premier and Arts Minister Annastacia

Palaszczuk said RADF delivered on the Queensland Government’s commitment to foster diverse and inclusive communities, grow strong regions and provide training, education, and employment opportunities for Queenslanders. As part of the Mareeba Arts Festival which took place on Saturday, Jenny created a permanent trompe l’oeil (tick of the eye) mural in Mareeba’s CBD which was opened on Saturday morning.

Blooming great Expo Jillian Brown makes these outdoor wall decorations out of recycled tin cans.

O P EX DAY ON E DAY TWO

By Rebecca Wallis

The 31st Tablelands Garden and Lifestyle Expo was officially opened Saturday morning by Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth. The MP soaked up the atmosphere and admired the plants and garden paraphernalia that was on display from over 55 stall holders at the Malanda Showgrounds. Organiser Judith Ryan said the day was a huge success. “It’s been buzzing and we’ve got more stalls than ever,” she said at the event on October 7. “The raffle has been a huge hit with over $500 of prizes donated by local businesses.” Mrs Ryan said that all money raised from the event would go back to the community through various projects. Last year they donated a defibrillator to the rural fire service. The event has been a must-do for all greenthumbed Tablelanders for the last 30 years and this year visitors were treated to information on planting, weed identification and paving designs. One of the more decorative products on show were some outdoor wall flowers

EXPRESS yourself LETTERS TO THE EDITOR editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au

Open Letter to TRC Ratepayers from Mayor Joe Paronella

– Published on the TRC website October 3, 2017

Over recent weeks it has been publicised that a small number of ratepayers in the Tablelands Regional Council area have experienced significant increases in their rates for the period 1 July 2017 to 31 December 2017. When this Council was elected, we committed to act with transparency and integrity and therefore in the interest of ensuring the whole community is provided with accurate facts regarding this matter, I hereby present this Open Letter on behalf of Tablelands Regional Council. As many of you know, there has been a sharp increase in some land valuations issued by the Queensland Valuer-General in March 2017, which came into effect on 30 June 2017. This was the first land valuation issued for the TRC area since 2014. The setting of rates and the valuations issued by the Valuer-General are explicitly linked: all Queensland Councils rate land based on valuations in accordance with the Local Government Regulation 2012. This regulation stipulates that Councils must calculate the rates for land by using the rateable value of the land. The largest land valuation increases in the current rates period were issued for land designated by TRC as Category F – Primary Production, and a result, ratepayers who have experienced the largest rate rises are all landholders in this

PAGE 10 The Express, Wednesday, October 11, 2017

category. However: • Not all land values in this category saw increases, with fewer than half of the valuations increasing; • Just over a quarter of all Category F properties experienced a decline in land value – and therefore saw their rates decrease; and • 30 per cent of Category F properties had little or no change in their valuations. As a Council, we fully appreciate that some ratepayers are unhappy about their rates increasing in correlation with their land valuation increases and we have already taken a number of steps to address ratepayer concerns and also have plans for further action to ensure ratepayers are fully informed of their options. On Thursday 28 September, I wrote to the Category F landholders in the TRC area who experienced large rate increases, inviting these ratepayers to contact Council to discuss any aspect of their rates. With my letter was a Fact Sheet providing full and transparent details of how rates are calculated. Also in this Fact Sheet was included a comparison of TRC’s Category F rates with other councils, a comparison which highlights that TRC levies rural properties at the lower end of the spectrum. I would also take this opportunity to extend that invitation once again for any ratepayer seeking further information about their rates to contact Council’s Customer Service team or your local Councillor and we would be happy to setup a meeting with you. Understandably, the impact that land valuations have on rates calculations has angered some ratepayers. I can assure you that your Council thought long and hard about minimising

this impact to the majority ratepayers through our overall general rates increase. However, we have also not let this matter rest, Council has already contacted the Valuer-General asking for a full report into the March 2017 valuations and we will continue to press the State Government on this. I expect to be able to provide ratepayers with further information on this in due course. Some of you may be aware that a public meeting has been called by a group of ratepayers for Wednesday 4 October. It was unfortunate that Council received our invitation to attend the meeting after the event had already been publicly advertised. Further, the invitation also expressly stipulated that Council would ‘not be permitted to stray’ into the area of land valuations at the meeting when the fact is that land valuations need to be an integral part of the discussion about rates. Council will not be attending this meeting, however we have made a commitment to facilitate a meeting between Councillors and a small delegation from this group after they have held their public meeting, should they so wish. In closing, I want to assure all TRC ratepayers that my Council has worked extremely hard to provide you with an equitable rates regime even in spite of factors outside of our direct control including State Government-imposed land valuations and rating methodologies. As ratepayers, you are TRC’s most important stakeholders and we will continue to strive for your best interests. Joe Paronella, TRC Mayor

Rates rise rubbish

The TRC needs to understand that it is not only the farmers hit by horrendous increases in their rates that have had enough. I live on a 1 hectare property at Tandarra (Tolga), on the 21/3/13 my half yearly rate bill was $571.80, my latest rate notice is $1372.95. This is an increase of well over 100% in a little over four years. I defy anyone to prove to me that wages have increased by anywhere near 100% in four years? These increases are unsustainable and there is little doubt that there are people that have resided on the Tablelands for years that are looking to get out. Friends at Tewantin on the Sunshine Coast with a similar size property to ours, pay over $800.00 less rates per annum than we do. This is in a prime tourist area 5km from Noosa and a stones throw from Brisbane, yet rates are cheaper. The Mayor keeps using the valuation increases as the main reason for the rate increases, this is a pathetic excuse and absolute rubbish. When the Queensland Valuer-General last issued changes in the land valuations some years ago I approached then Councillor Alan Rockley with my concern what the valuation increases would do to the rates. I was told by Alan, that it is the Council that sets the rates and they would reduce the rate in the dollar to more than lessen the blow of the valuation increase. This was done and the rate increase for that year was 1.4%. For the continuing unsustainable rate increases on the Tablelands, we are getting little return as far as services. Jerry Micola, Tolga

Tolga overrun with crowd of scarecrows By Rebecca Wallis

If you’ve driven through Tolga recently and seen some static members of the community popping up around the place, you’d be forgiven for thinking they were a little ‘wooden’. The new additions to the town were all part of the bi-annual Tolga Scarecrow Festival which held its second ever event on Saturday afternoon and evening. “The idea of it was to bring the community together,” said event organiser Janice McDonald. “It’s not to make a lot of money, just have a fun family day where everyone can come without paying a lot of money.” The festival began at 1pm with stalls, live music, a bouncy castle and the judging of scarecrows that had been lovingly crafted by schools and individuals throughout the previous weeks.

There were also a host of good old fashioned games such as the egg and spoon race, a hay bale relay and the limbo. A display of stunning tractors were also on show and as the evening set in, stilt walkers from Kuranda provided additional fun. “The theme is farming and our motto is to bring everyone together,” said Mick McDonald, Tolga Lions president. “Any money raised goes back into the community through various projects.” Richard Standen is a community member who dresses up as Mr Scarecrow to add to the atmosphere for the kids. “The town really embraces it,” he said. “It’s growing because there are more stalls here this year and there were loads of scarecrows around the town leading up to the weekend. “It’s a really family friendly day out.”

The best of the Tablelands will be on show at the ‘Taste of the Tablelands’ festival this Sunday October 15. The annual event held at the Chinese Temple Grounds on Herberton Road, Atherton and hosted by the Rotary Club of Atherton, promises to be bigger and better than ever before. This year visitors are encouraged to spend the entire day at the Festival with non-stop entertainment, workshops, cookery demonstrations and competitions to enjoy throughout the day. activities and working artists will also be featured and of course the highlight of the day will be the gourmet food and cool drinks to tantalise your taste buds. Farmers from across the region will be selling their produce on the day allowing everyone to see and buy the best products from across the Tablelands and Far North Queensland. A cookery stage has been introduced in the open grassed area around the gourmet lane with cooking

demonstrations as well as several competitions. Interspersed will be a ‘Celebrity Cook-Off’ competition, which will see local well-known identities from across the Tablelands compete in a no-holds barred race to be crowned ‘Celebrity Cook’. The festival shows how diverse the Tablelands region is and what wonderful and amazing products are grown and made locally. For more information visit www. tastesofthetablelands.com.au. ‘The Voice’ star back in FNQ By Rebecca Wallis

The FNQ Country Music Festival celebrated 20 years in style over the weekend with The Voice 2017 winner Judah Kelly performing as the main act. Kicking off on Friday evening at Kerribee Park, Mareeba and going through till Sunday afternoon, country singers young and old, experienced and amateur took to the stage which was back in the main arena for the first in a long time. “I love performing at places like this,” Judah told The Express on Saturday. “I came here in 2012 and took part in the talent quest but didn’t win!” Judah performed late Saturday night to a delighted crowd, a set that included country covers and a few songs off his new album Count on Me. Prior to The Voice, Judah toured the State performing in shows like this and said he still loves the atmosphere. “I competed in talent quests all over the State

and then I started playing in bands,” he said. “Then I did the session muso thing and playing for people like Caitlyn Shadbolt – whoever would pay for a guitarist!” These days he is hot property thanks to his knock out performances on the The Voice as part of Delta Goodrem’s team. “It was an amazing opportunity,” he said. “At the moment there’s a lot of planning going on, but it’s going to get crazy. We’ll see what happens.” Still as down to earth as ever, the 20 year old says wherever his career goes from here, he’d love to come back to the FNQ Country Music Festival and perform again. “I’d love to come back if they’ll have me!” he said. Judah flew up from Brisbane for the weekend with his band and sat down to enjoy the other artists that performed on the stage including last year’s overall winner of the talent quest Darryl Chapman and Tyson Lucas.

Judah Kelly had a warm-up session earlier in the evening before he came on stage as the main act on Saturday night.

The Mareeba / Kuranda Baha’i Group invites you to...

Celebrate the 200th Anniversary OF THE BIRTH OF

Baha’u’llah

SUNDAY 22nd OCTOBER, 2017 “The Earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens” - Baha’u’llah Baha’u’llah, literally the “Glory of God”, is the Founder/Prophet of the Baha’i Faith. He was born on this date in old Tehran, Persia in 1817 of noble parents. This date is celebrated worldwide on the 200th anniversary of His birth. In Australia, it is a major celebration in the far-flung Baha’i community, including in Kuranda where a small but active community has existed for some decades. A number of commemorations are planned throughout Australia in the week leading up to this date, to which all are welcome. Baha’u’llah himself was persecuted, tortured, dispossessed, imprisoned, exiled and treated as a prisoner for most of his life, finishing up in the ancient prison city of Akka in Palestine, a place of pilgrimage for Baha’is. Baha’u’llah proclaimed a new Divine religion for a new global, united age. He taught that all the great religions originally came progressively from the one same supreme Deity, however named or described. Further, that all humanity is one race and one family. In this age humanity was evolving towards its long awaited and prophesised time of global unity, spirituality and peace, and that for this to happen it would have to emerge from its adolescence, a time of great trials and troubles, before emerging into its maturity.

Please feel free to join with us in these commemorations... You are most welcome! A stall will be open in the Original Market, Kuranda 16th to 20th of October with invites to evening discussions.

Details available on request or phone 0419 632 286 or 4093 9571.

The LAND Howe Farming slashes power bills A Mareeba banana farm expects to slash its power bill by about $40,000 a year by implementing the findings of an Energy Savers Plus Program audit. The Energy Savers Plus Program is a joint initiative of the Palaszczuk Government and industry that helps individual farmers tap into savings through on-farm energy audits, potentially saving tens of thousands of dollars. Howe Farming is now on track to reduce the power bill for one of its pump stations by 45% by installing a new variable speed drive and adopting a tariff change recommended in an Energy Savers audit.

Energy Minister Mark Bailey said the plantation expected to cut maintenance costs through the change. “The $35,000 cost of implementing these recommendations will be recouped in less than a year,” he said. “To date, one in five of the audited farm enterprises has implemented some or all of the recommendations to reduce their power bills, and they are reporting savings in line with those forecast in the audits.” Mr Bailey said the Energy Savers plus program covered virtually every major agriculture sector that used energy intensive-

ly in Queensland and the findings were now being shared with primary producers across the state at field days and on-line. The case studies show how applying best practice energy management strategies can increase productivity, reduce energy bills and contribute to good environmental outcomes. QFF President Stuart Armitage said the biggest uptake has been by irrigators improving pumping systems. “Crop requirements, climatic conditions, water licencing and irrigation channel conditions mean they don’t have the luxury of deciding when they pump water,” he said.

Women in farming encouraged by QFF

By Rebecca Wallis

Women who work in farming were giving some timely inspiration last week at a free workshop in Mareeba. The Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) held the event at the Jackaroo Motel on Wednesday October 4 which saw women who work in farm businesses across the Tablelands come together to discuss the role that females play in the industry. “We want to get women in farming to be the best business women they can be and to make a bigger contribution,” said Jane Muller from QFF. “We want them to be confident in business and to be growing their agricultural business - to be thinking about what sort of broader contributions they want to be making into wider positions.” Throughout the day the ladies heard success stories about women that have taken on leadership roles in rural communities and discussed the concept of the community’s perception of women who work in farming. “What we’re recognising is that traditionally it’s been the blokes that have gone on to the agricultural

industries and we’re seeing more women take on board these positions and from the industry association’s point of view we can see the value in having more women around the table and we’d just like to see more of them stepping into those roles,” said Ms Muller. “So the project is about how do we get the message through to our farm business women that they’re really welcome and they’d be really valued in those bigger leadership roles and help them find their way to them.”

The workshops are funded through the Office of Small Business under the Advancing Women in Business program and also supported by Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) and AustSafe Super. The workshops will help QFF prepare recommendations for the best way forward for leadership development for women in Queensland’s agricultural sector. “Sometimes there is a bit of a confidence issue and for a lot of women they probably are interested and

they are confident, it’s just those issues around how do you make the time, they’ve got family commitments, business commitments, probably local community commitments,” said Ms Muller. “We’re challenging women to have a bit of a rethink about is there a bigger contribution you could make and how would you need to re-organise your life a little bit in order to do that?” The workshops are also being hosted in Toowoomba, Bundaberg and Caboolture.

EXPRESS sPORT

Mareeba Exciting game of cricket cricket wrap MAREEBA Cricket had a busy and successful weekend Cricket Far North comp. On Saturday the Under 12’s played Port Douglas Muddies at Firth Park, Mareeba. The Mareeba side batted first and scored 6 for a 164, with Ben Miles getting 22 not out and Mac Cureton on 17 not out. Mareeba then bowled out Port for 157 runs with best bowlers being Ben Miles with 3 for 17 and Jack Kruse getting 2 for 19. A special mention goes to Hamush from Port Douglas who scored 104 not out. On Sunday the Mareeba third grade team travelled to Innisfail. Mareeba batted first and on an uneven wicket struggled to be all out for 88. Liam Bombardieri scored 31 of 54 balls partnered by Tyson Brown with 12 off 33, which steadied the ship and gave

the boys a total to bowl at. Mareeba then went out to field and all bowlers bowled nice and tight with the pick being Trevor Spry getting 3/20 off six overs and Tyson Brown picking up 2/6 off 4 overs. They needed 3 off the last over with 2 wickets in hand. On the second ball they tried to steel a quick single and got themselves runout, then got a single with 3 balls remaining. Needing 2 runs the Innisfail batsman hit one straight up only to be caught and bowled by Nick Turner. Mareeba’s second division team had a win in a very close game at the weekend. Mareeba batted first and made 9 for 147 with Paul Moss on 37 Rhys Thomas not out on 22. It came down to last over and Mareeba won by 1 run .

Atherton Bowler Jack Gardner.

The home crowd were entertained by an exciting game of cricket at Loder Park on Saturday. Defending premiers Mulgrave won the toss and elected to bat, posting 155 off their 40 overs. Tom Boorman was the best of Atherton’s bowlers, taking 3-14 off his allotted 8 overs, Seppe Barletta, Luke Parnell, Chris Adams and Hadyn Steele pitched in with a wicket each. Gerard Fox continued his great form with the bat making 63 off 57 in an otherwise slow start by Atherton. With scores pretty much parallel from the half-way mark on, the game was set up for an exciting finish. Tom Boorman coming in at number seven was set a task with the team needing 48 runs off 48 balls to win. The boys put up a great fight to have everyone on the edge of their seats and take it right down to the wire. Needing two runs off the last ball they gave it their best shot to run a bye for the tie, but Mulgrave executed a run-out to win the match by one run.

EXPRESS sPORT Basketball grand finals around the corner The Mareeba Basketball competition is presently at a most interesting stage with the semi-finals and then the grand final just around the corner. Certainly the various senior and junior teams can consolidate their position for the semi-finals by scoring victories in fixtures being played this week and again during the concluding round of the competition fixtures next week. No doubt teams who contest the semi-finals after finishing on top of the points table in their respective grade, will have a distinct advantage in their quest to progress to the seasons decider for the championship title. In the men’s round of fixtures decided last week, Blue Angels won a highly entertaining clash with Ciggy Butts defeating them by 72 to 59. Actually both sides played particularly well and at three quarter time Ciggy Butts were trailing by 48 to 54. But Blue angels held off any late challenge from

Ciggy Butts to win by 13 points. Jeremy McKay, Jonah Hastie and Tyson Tatti all scored a number of excellent baskets for the winners. While David McGrath, Zac Myrteza and Warren Thompson scored well for Ciggy Butts with some quality shots. The other men’s fixtures were closely contested with Barra’s scoring over spare parts by 36 to 34 and Stingrays 54 to 47 winners over Red Devils. A most absorbing ladies fixture between Shockers and The Dust combination was also on Display last week. Both sides were locked together on 12 points at the major break. An even third quarter saw Shockers edge ahead 22 to 20 when the final quarter commenced. However The Dust side scored a couple of important baskets over the concluding seconds to snatch a thrilling 29 to 28 win over Shockers. An excellent haul of 18 points by Dusts Yi’Chum Lin proved a telling fac-

tor in their success. While Tracey Leet top scored for Shockers with 14 points. Juniors fixtures resumed after the school holidays and resulted in comfortable wins to Hawkes Prey, Cavillers and Olympians. The one exception being Alex V.I.P who held off a very strong finsh by Andy’s Angels for a narrow 41 to 40 victory. This game featured a pleasing performance by the talented Luke Fresta for Alex V.I.P, playing well after missing most of the season due to injury.

Abby Toshach will represent Queensland in both hockey and cricket.

Abby makes state teams for two sports Young Tolga sporting superstar Abby Toshach is on fire with selections to both state cricket and hockey teams in recent weeks. The 13 year old Malanda State High School pupil is well known locally for her sporting accolades and her success is continuing after being selected into the Under-15 state hockey squad over the school holidays. Abby, who plays se-

nior hockey for Cairns, has previously represented Queensland Under-12 Schoolgirls and the Association Under-13s state team and will now go on to play for the state on the Under-15s team. Her recent success on the hockey pitch follows the recent announcement that she had been picked for the North Queensland State Academy for Cricket. Abby was one of six girls

chosen for the program from Townsville north – three of which came from Atherton Cricket Club along with Mason Blaney who also plays for the club. “We’ve done a lot of work to get girls into playing cricket on the Tablelands,” said Graham Lampherd who also coaches at the club. “It’s been a huge push and we’ve got a lot of young girls coming to play

now.” Abby will attend Queensland Cricket’s State Academy Program in Townsville in January 2018. “She is very driven in her sport,” said her father Gary Toshach. “She loves it and works really hard. Last year she was the only girl playing in the under 14 FNQ cricket competition.”

Queensland champs The Mareeba Bulls Under 14s team celebrate after winning the Champions Cup on the Gold Coast.

New coach for the Roosters Graham Clark is keen to get stuck into training.

Roosters announce new coach for 2018 Graham Clark has been announced as the new Roosters first grade coach for 2018, taking on the job of leading the Atherton Roosters Senior Rugby League team to victory in their 100th anniversary year. Clark is no stranger to the club as he was the assistant coach back in 2015 and is keen to get stuck into the job with off-season training starting on No-

vember 21. “I’m really looking forward to working with the young people,” he said. “I’m not going to make a lot of changes. We’ve got a good nucleus of kids and the foundations have already been laid, we just need to build on that.” Clark has previously coached the Innisfail Leprechauns and Babinda in the past and was president of the Babinda club in

1999. One of his sons, Graham, plays for the Northern Pride while second son James plays for the Canterbury Bulldogs. The Roosters finished 8th on the ladder this year. “We’re going to be working really hard during the off season to prepare for next season,” said Clark. “There is an opportunity for kids there that want to work hard. It’s going to be an exciting year.”

FOURTEEN soccer mad kids can officially call themselves champions this week after a gruelling week of games on the Gold Coast saw them win the under 14s Gold Coast Champions Cup. The players from Mareeba United Football Club travelled down for the tournament which saw them compete against teams from across Queensland and New Zealand.

The tournament came just a week after the Mareeba Bulls under 14’s took out the grand final of the FNQ Football junior competition where they defeated Marlin Coast Rangers 3-0. This is the first time a Mareeba Bulls team was invited to participate in the weeklong event. After seven days and eight games undefeated, the team were finally

crowned champions on September 30 after defeating Olympic FC 2-0 in the grand final. “They put in 150 per cent and beyond to take out the title,” said Coach Luch Avolio. “I’m really proud of them.” The Gold Coast Champions Youth Cup is one of the most prestigious soccer tournaments in the southern hemisphere and attracts the most elite teams from

across Australia and New Zealand. “We went against some really big clubs and they beat every one of them,” said Mr Avolio. “The level of soccer was beyond expectations.” This was the first time Mareeba entered a team into the tournament and the first time that a far North Queensland team has won the Gold Coast Champions Cup in its 21 year history.
