Chef Mark Cooper and wife Simone at Camp 64, Dimbulah.

Putting Dimbulah on the map By Rebecca Wallis

From cooking for Prince William and Kate Middleton to cooking for the country folk of Dimbulah, British chef Mark Cooper is causing a food revolution on the Tablelands with people flocking from all over the Far North to get a taste of what he is serving up. The Michelin star chef took over the café at Camp 64 on Dimbulah’s main drag in November last year offering a standard of food usu-

ally reserved for expensive big city eateries. It’s an unlikely place to find the former head chef from one of the UK’s most prestigious restaurant businesses, but he couldn’t be happier. “I saw a gap in the market here for really, really, good cooking,” he said. “Anywhere in the world there’s a gap in the market for really good cooking. It doesn’t matter where you are, it matters what you do. And the home made stuff, no one does that anymore.

We’re the last of a dying breed.” Mark trained under one of the UK’s top three Michelin star chefs, Michael Wignall, eventually taking over his job as head chef at the Devonshire Arms. The food is top of the range, contemporary and cooked to perfection – and good enough for royalty. “When Kate and Will got married, they came to the Island of Tresco and I cooked for them,” says Mark.

Lakes plans now online

Locals can now have their say on the plans for the future of the Bicentennial Lakes after Mareeba Shire Council released the concept drawing online for public consultation. Mayor Tom Gilmore is excited about releasing the vision to the public saying the Lakes has the potential to be a key focal area and visitor attraction for Mareeba. “This draft masterplan and concept drawing is a starting point for consultation with a view to developing documentation that will support grant and subsidy applications into the future,” Cr Gilmore said. “We welcome and value your views on the proposed revitalisation and encourage residents and community groups to take a couple of minutes and complete the online survey.” Public consultation closes on Friday 16 March 2018. Visit Council’s website to have your say.

Pantry to help those in need

The Community Pantry will have an official Grand Opening this week at 52 Rankin Street, Mareeba. The food pantry retail store is an inititiative by QITE that will help people in need with fresh fruit and vegetables sourced from the community garden. Not only helping those in need, it will also teach valuable employment skills in the communityand reduce food wastage. The Grand Opening will take place on Thursday, February 8 at 10am. Refreshments provided.

Mareeba State School principal Mandy Whybird with students Shania Rosenfelt, Shane Homfray and Lakeiya Swan.

Sausages for school kids Mareeba State School kids were treated to a free breakfast last Thursday to celebrate the start of the new school year. The sausage sizzle was

put on before school for all students thanks to Chaplain Tim Gunton. “It makes it a bit fun for the kids,” he said. “We started doing it last

term as a celebration to say welcome to the school.” 600 sausages were cooked and handed out to grateful students, half of which were donated by lo-

cal churches and the other from Walkamin company Morganbury Meats. The school’s P&C group were also instrumental in putting on the event.

Members of Youth with a Mission came all the way up from Townsville to help hand out the food on the day to the students.

Roundabout to be 1.62kg mango replaced with lights wins KP comp

Mareeba will be getting traffic lights at the intersections of Byrnes and Rankin Streets replacing the existing roundabout in a move that is claimed to be enhancing “bicycle safety”. The project will cost $3.47million. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said cyclists, pedestrians and motorbike riders accounted for 38 per cent of the state’s road toll last year. “It’s essential we reduce their representation in crashes,” Mr Bailey said. Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore welcomed the announcement. “This improvement to traffic management in our

main street will eliminate the roundabout which is considered to be dangerous to both cyclists and pedestrians in particular,” Cr Gilmore said. The intersection currently accommodates high pedestrian demands. “This outcome was prompted by a joint traffic management study of Mareeba’s CBD which revealed that the Byrnes and Rankin Streets crossroad is the busiest and most dangerous intersection in the town with over 15,000 vehicles passing through each day,” Cr Gilmore said. “While not currently at capacity, the high incidence of crashes and the significant pedestrian de-

mands would indicate that control of the movements is required to safely accommodate all road users.” Bike riding club the Mareeba Mountain Goats welcomed the move. “The Mareeba Mountain Goats welcome any initiative that aims to make cycling safer and hence encourage more people to take up the sport,” said club secretary Megan Harris. “As local community members ourselves we see the benefit to improving this intersection for all users – cars, cyclists and pedestrians. It is one of the busiest intersections in Mareeba and improving safety for all users is a good thing.”

Our annual KP mango competition has come to an end and we can announce that the winner for this year is 11-year-old Milan Maloberti from Mutchilba. with his 1.62kg mango. Milan’s aunt Anna has one of the oldest mango plantations in the area and says she had a bumper crop of whopping mangoes this year. Milan will be awarded with $500 prize money while second place and the winner of $300 is Sarah Westwood and third place and the winner of $200 is Weston Hilditch. The Express’ managing editor Carl Portella congratulated all competition winners and said he looked forward to seeing another wave of entries when the

competition started again in October. “The KP Mango Competition has always generated excitement amongst mango munchers across the Tablelands and it’s great to see that enthusiasm again this year,” he said. “I can’t wait for what whoppers fall off the tree next season.” Mr Portella also thanked the competition’s sponsors Lindsay Transport and Lindsay Rural and Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association (MDFVGA) for their ongoing support. The competition winners will be formally announced at a Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon in March.

Outback explorer sets up camp in Dimbulah By Rebecca Wallis

It’s a far cry from his wild days trekking across the outback with a pack of goats and two dingoes for company, but Owen Davies has fit right into Dimbulah since he opened his gallery come café two years ago. The author, station manager and explorer has got some stories to tell and stepping inside Camp 64 you will get a feel for many of them. Mr Davies rents out the kitchen and dining space at the back of Camp 64 to Mark and Simone Cooper, but the walls are adorned with restored relics of a life long gone, where living on the land was hard work, but magical. “People look at what I do and they think jeez that’s pretty amazing stuff and I

say, no it’s not,” said Mr Davies. “I say look at the explorers, they’re the ones that did the incredible stuff. I go out into the desert and I’ve got a sat phone, I’ve got a GPS, I’ve got topographic maps, I’ve got tracking devices. “When you’re out there for a few months you’ve got to deal with what nature throws at you, but you’ve just got to take it in your stride cos there’s no point in sooking about it. There’s nothing you can do about it.” Mr Davies has walked thousands of kilometres through deserts and bushland alone. He has worked as a safari guide and turned an abandoned 500,000 acre station in the Northern Territory into a thriving high end tourism business. The shop opened in 2015 and is named after one of the

stops he made while trekking between Camooweal and Birdsville on the eastern edge of the Simpson Desert. When he saw the old butchers shop in Dimbulah and its adjacent land were up for sale, he jumped at the chance to buy them. “I wasn’t too sure what I was going to do with it, but I thought no I’ll make this area here into somewhere that people can bring their crafts or whatever,” he said. He is now planning four new buildings on the vacant corner block. “A blacksmith’s shop, a rebuilt log building and two old style re-built sheds that will house vintage cars and vintage engines. A lot of it will be working. I’m going to generate my own electricity with an old style generator. “It’s going through the

application process now.” Mr Davies said that Dimbulah was on in the midst of a boom and had the potential to be a thriving tourism centre. “There’s some interesting stuff here, there’s a lot of history, there’s great places where you can look at birds and freshwater crocodiles,” he said. “To international tourists they think they’re in the outback when they come to Dimbulah.. “There’s a lot of talk that Dimbulah is on the edge of stuff happening. There’s a lot of development happening in the area in horticulture. Dimbulah is where it is happening on the Tablelands as far as development goes.” Mr Davies has written two books – Walking with Dingoes and Camp 64. Both can be purchased from his shop in Dimbulah.

Michelin star chef trades royalty for regional town From P1

“We cooked with armed guards watching us in the kitchen. That was pretty insane.” His wife, Simone, is a former ‘front of house’ employee for Gordon Ramsey in London but her British visa requirements meant that in 2011 she had to come back to her home town, Cairns. Mark followed, leaving behind the opportunity of achieving what only a handful of chefs in the world have ever achieved – two Michelin stars. “I did it for love,” smiles Mark. “But my career has been different since I got to Australia. I came here with the same Michelin star attitude that I’d made my career on, but I realised pretty quickly it wasn’t going to work for me. “I struggled to find

somewhere that would value my work. Everyone wanted me to take stuff out of packets or use predone recipes or whatever. But it’s not what I do. I got frustrated a lot.” After a stint working a gruelling 80-100hr weeks as the executive chef at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, Victoria, where he was responsible for seven different venues and 150 staff, he came back to the Far North and in search of something of his own. He heard that the café at Camp 64 was looking for new owners and within a few weeks had moved there with Simone and their two little boys aged two and four. Within the last 10 weeks the news of his credentials has started to spread and he is now regularly turning people away on Friday and Saturday nights. But this is

just the start of what he has planned. “I’ve put in an operation that suits everything, it suits the place, it’s rustic and it suits the atmosphere in here and it appeals to the general public,” says Mark who offers slow cooked pork belly, slow cooked ribs, salmon nicoise and salads as part of his menu, as well as wood fire pizzas and a range of French pastries. “The menu was just a basic one to get us going but it’s too simple for me, I’m going to refine things as we go and just gradually push on with it.” Later this month he is putting on a food-lovers dream event, showcasing his glittering talent in all its refinery. ‘A Night in Paris’ is an homage to his French training and will feature a 14 course dining experience

like no other. “It’s going to be a real fine dining event,” he says. “I’m doing a degustation, wine tasting with every course and my signature dish which I’ve achieved a lot of awards for – the beef wellington. I do it better than anybody in the world. “There will be a lot of molecular gastronomy and contemporary cooking and it’s going to be insane. It’s really exciting because usually I’ve got a team of 30 helping me do it, but I’m doing it on my own.” The event was almost sold out before it was even made official, proving that his gamble is paying off. “We’ve seen a 400 per cent growth in the business in 10 weeks,” he says. “There’s a real market for something special here and this menu that I’m doing here is a bit below where I’m going, but we’re

just teaching these people that I can cook and then the next menu will come out after this event ready for March and that will be a bit more refined again. “I’ve been finding my feet with everything with the kitchen, the people and the style of food, the new area, but I’m loving every second.” A Night in Paris will take place at Camp 64 on February 25. Cuda family descendants sought for Mareeba reunion Descendants of the Cuda family are organising a reunion in Mareeba in April and are wanting to hear from anyone with connections to the Calabrian family that would like to get involved. Committee member, Phillip Cuda, said, “The more the merrier. The Cuda motto is that you can never have too many.” Phillip said, a number of people from overseas and various parts of Southern Australia have already indicated their intention to attend events that will extend over two days. He said that descendants with the Cuda name can be found in many different countries but by far the largest number, 25%, live in Italy and mostly in Calabria. Argentina is second in number with Australia and North America

next. The Cuda name has a variety of meanings, but when loosely translated in Italian, it refers to ‘the tail.’ In Eastern Europe the word CUDA translates to ‘love’. In the history of Italian born Cuda the surname belonged to those found in places of high office, including the senate. Francesco Cuda (one of many) held the position of President of the Chamber of Deputies. Another Francesco Cuda, son of Filippo and Rosa Cuda born in Falerna in 1909 served two years in the army and then in 1937 he left his small farm and young family behind and became the first Cuda to settle in Australia. His wife and young son joined him on the Atherton Tablelands, later around 1949. From that point onwards, young men, gener-

ally around the age of 16 or 17 years were sent overseas by ship, alone. They left their homeland with one or two changes of clothing and a few dollars. These young men brought to their new destinations youth, vitality, strong-abled bodies, tenacity, resilience and the will to succeed. 79-year-old Arthur Leslie with his two dogs Mac and Panda that he rehomed from the Mareeba Animal Refuge.

Calling all dog lovers

By Rebecca Wallis

SEVENTY-NINE year old Arthur Leslie only went to the Mareeba Animal Refuge to look for a new dog, but eight years later he is a regular fixture at the Hickling Avenue facility, volunteering his time to walk the dogs. He is the only regular dog walker the refuge has and such is his compassion for the animals, he will spend five or six hours three times a week ensur-

ing every single one gets to stretch their legs. “There’s two big yards here and they alternate the dogs out there but if they didn’t get a walk they’d go nuts,” said Mr Leslie who relocated to Walkamin from Victoria nine years ago because of his asthma. The self-confessed dog lover rehomed two dogs from the refuge - Panda and Mac - but still makes regular time for the dogs that find their way to the facility and wait patiently for a new home.

“People come and go,” said refuge manager Jennifer Walsh. “We can have up to 30 dogs here at one time so it’s not possible for us to walk them all, it’s very time consuming.” Ms Walsh said Mr Leslie was a mainstay of the refuge. “I don’t know what we’d do without him,” she said. Volunteers are desperately needed at the refuge to help with walking the dogs that are awaiting a

new home. But ex-dairy farmer Mr Leslie reckons he gets just as much out of it as the dogs do. “I find it quite rewarding,” he said. “I can’t see there’s any point sitting around doing nothing and the majority of dogs are really good and in the time I’ve been here there’s been some really traumatised dogs come in and I always carry some treats for them. “Once you can get them to take something off you,

you’re half way there. But most of them are really nice dogs. “There are a few dogs I would love to have owned but I can only handle two so you’ve got to be practical about these things. “You get attached to them, that’s for sure, but it’s nice to see them get settled in a good home.” Anyone with a spare few hours a week that would like to help out at the refuge with either the cats or dogs, is encouraged to call Jennifer on 4092 3060.

Mayor needs to Cutting off the nose to spite face start listening Having just read Paronella’s letter to the editor in the other local paper on January 30 I can’t believe how one sided this is. One gets the impression that the mayor and the councillors are the only one‘s that are right. Is he suggesting that anything a rate payer says is a lie? Where does he get the idea that TRC rate payers are not his employer? He was elected by rate payers as mayor and if he is paid out of rates revenue, he is in the employ of rate payers until the next elections. Until then they need to start listening to the community. Isn’t it amazing that suddenly we are hearing from councillors. I don’t like what I am hearing, where have you been for the last two years? As a council you say you are proud of your achievements, does this include the massive rate rises we have had to endure for the last two years? Did you accept pay rises while passing on excessive rate rises? We moved to the tablelands eight years ago for a better and more affordable lifestyle this is no longer possible thanks to the councils increasing our rates by more than $1000 per year. If you were concerned about this you would be trying to reduce rates. This council has perfected less for more. You should be trying to get more people to move here instead of slogging the ratepayers. The last council had similar ideas and remember what happened to them, all of you are heading in the same direction.

Council’s determination to drive the bats out of town has lead to extensive vegetation pruning and clearing of some green spaces in Mareeba. Once shady parks enjoyed by locals have been vandalized to the extend that they have very little left to offer for humans and bats alike. A sense of deja vu remembering that Mareeba high-street once was lined with beautiful big trees giving people a welcome reprieve from the sometimes unforgiving tropical sun and heat. Apparently the real reason why the trees had to go then, was to do with the indigenous population making too much use (in some peoples eyes) of the pleasant shade and benches under the trees. Having been to New Orleans a city with similar climatic conditions I was impressed how mature trees were incorporated in the city design, making life in the heat a lot more pleasant. Insulated power lines weaving their way through the canopy of trees and big roots flowing onto the pavement seemed to be no concern. Can’t people see that removing trees because they are inconvenient is no solution? Nadine O’Brien Koah

More ratepayer issues out there

TRC Ratepayers need to know that there are other rates issues that may affect many more rates categories than just F & G. It’s believed that rating anomalies exist which have impacted the council budget and if left unresolved will compound, becoming huge problems in the fuGranville Spencer ture. Atherton Councillors have de-

nied any knowledge of additional rates problems in the current schedule. So, we can only assume those managing the rates either 1) don’t know they’ve made mistakes or 2) know & haven’t informed council. Since the Cat F & G crisis, ratepayers have repeatedly asked to meet with Councillors and the relevant council staff to discuss these additional anomalies in the current rating system. So far these requests have been denied. If we only point out the issues to Councillors, they will simply refer them to the very officers who bungled it in the first place. Ratepayers need the opportunity to cross-examine council’s explanations. Otherwise how do we get to the truth? If they are genuine mistakes, then at least we’ll know that it’s simple incompetence and not something more sinister. If there has been concealment of errors, then that is a very serious matter for the council. If we are exaggerating or exacerbating the situation, then council can easily put it all to rest by meeting and discussing. We’re happy to be proven wrong. Is the council? Sandra Curcio Tolga

TRC’s Division 6 Loses its Voyce

It’s a great shame to have lost such a talent in Cr Bronwyn Voyce, however it wasn’t the ratepayers who pushed her to quit. To try to ascribe blame to the Division 6 farmers is appalling. The Editor of the Tablelander Newspaper should be ashamed of himself for implying it. No doubt Cr Voyce was admonished for daring to speak up in support of her constituents. Although the Editor de-

voted one and a half pages to Councillors’ comments including a full page to the Mayor’s statement, I was interested to see there were no such statements from Cr Voyce or Cr Ball. I’m curious as to why the only two Councillors who supported the affected ratepayers and fought for a 10% concession did not make statements in his paper or even express similar views as the others. Cr Voyce, to her credit, acknowledged the Council’s responsibility for the rates bungle and was openly sympathetic to the Cat F and G ratepayers. In addition, for her honorable efforts, she was accused by a fellow Councillor at an open meeting for” throwing them under a bus”. So why would ratepayers oust one of the only two Councillors fighting in their corner? It simply doesn’t make sense! Whilst the gagging claim has been denied by all but one Councillor it shows that speaking out will still come at a cost. Mr Anthony did at least get one thing right. Division 6 has another chance “ to put up a viable, credible and sensible candidate for election”. The problem is finding someone willing to drop everything to take on the job mid -term and with the current regime in such disarray. Ideally it should be someone with previous TRC council experience, who knows the ropes and can hit the ground running. It would be a tall order for someone new to get their head around the system. I hope that whoever takes the job on will have the courage to ask the tough questions needed to get to the bottom of the ongoing rates fiasco. Ed Kochi Atherton

New doctors for Tablelands

Two new doctors will soon arrive in the Tablelands region via a James Cook University program training general practitioners across north western Queensland. Dr Meech Freeman and Dr Laura Koefler are part of a cohort of more than 130 doctors state-wide who are embarking on GP training through the Generalist Medical Training (GMT) program. The doctors fill muchneeded places in clinics and hospitals across regional and remote Queensland. Dr Koefler will be based at Amaroo Medical in Mareeba and Dr Freeman at the Atherton Hospital. “It will be great to work in a hospital setting as I have completed advanced training in obstetrics, and I am eager to continue to develop these skills,” said Dr Freeman. GMT Director, Associate Professor Peta-Ann Teague said the new training GPs will help to fill workforce gaps in many parts of Queensland. “JCU has coordinated the placement of new doctors from Thursday Island to Tewantin, Mount Isa to Maroochydore, and Cairns to Cloncurry,” Associate Professor Teague said. “We dedicate time and

Valentine’s Day engagements Almost 40 per cent of engagements are expected to happen between November and February — also known as the proposal season. According to a new survey, 43 per cent of Millennials say Valentine’s Day is their top day

ATHERTON HOCKEY INFO DAY THIS SUNDAY 11TH FEBRUARY

Give hockey a go in 2018 Looking for a sport for 2018? We encourage you to pick up a hockey stick and give it a go. Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association’s President Carrie de Brueys and Vice President Pamela Clearwater are very excited about the 2018 season. “The Atherton hockey family is very supportive and we love new players to the game; and urge those who haven’t picked up a stick for a few years; or even twenty years to get into hockey,” said Carrie. “If you’re aged from five to 105, we want you! “We have a Minkies format for our littlies (Under 8’s) where they learn skills, rules and as they improve transition to full games towards the end of year. Our DIV 2 kids are aged 12 and under, and our DIV 1 kids are our Under 16’s. “In previous years we have had four mixed teams in each division. We have an Open comp (16 yrs +) for our Ladies. We have had a strong Ladies Vets competition for many years (35yrs +), and hope this year to encourage more players to strengthen our existing teams and divisions. Divisions for this year will be finalised once we have all registrations in.” Never played before or not for a long time? That’s ok!! There is plenty of support and assistance for all ages, stages and abilities. “For the last few years our Tableland Tomahawks have travelled down each Friday evening to compete in the Cairns hockey competition,” said Carrie. “A huge shout out to Phil and the Emerson’s Bus Company who have trans-

“We invite all captains and coaches to attend on the day to submit their teams, but if you don’t have a team, don’t fear – we will find you one. “On Saturday February 17th we have our highly anticipated City vs Country event and Fun Day starting at 10.30am. “Stingers Hockey Club from Cairns bring a range of teams up to compete against us for a day of fun and competition. Make sure you come along and enjoy the day. The canteen will be open with hot food and cold drinks at the

So if you’re interested in developing to a higher level of hockey ATHA can help you achieve this. “We have a great team of volunteers, from the people who prepare and care for the fields; the coaches, managers, umpires, parents, wonderful canteen people ... to committee members. They all come together to make this happen. Come and be a part of it.” Hockey is competitive, but more importantly we want people to have fun, improve their fitness, make friends and enjoy the social aspects of team sport and being part of a community. Important skills are practiced and developed with physical activity – discipline, being part of a team, social skills and

motor skills. Team sports encourage cooperation and respect for others. What a great foundation! “The great thing about hockey is it’s at the same place and time each week,” said Carrie. “Games are played each Saturday at Loder Park, Atherton, with regular timeslots for all grades. Even better is once you pay your annual fee there are no ongoing costs each week.” Hockey is a cheap sport in comparison to many others; the annual fee works out to a weekly cost from as little as $7/week for littlies and $13/week for seniors. “Our Sign-on day for the 2018 season will be this Sunday February 11th 10am-1pm, however as we have online registration and payment system for all players, this can be done at any time,” said Carrie. “We will be there on the day to answer questions and assist people through the process if they are new to hockey.

Weekend writers retreat on the Tablelands

THE Tropical Writers group are inviting aspiring writers to a weekend masterclass on the Tablelands

from 16-18 February with best-selling author Kári Gíslason, who co-wrote Saga Land with his friend, ABC’s Conversations broadcaster Richard Fidler. Regarded as classics of world literature, the Icelandic sagas are among the greatest stories ever written. In 2015, Kári and Richard travelled to Iceland with a plan to make a radio series and write a book together. They criss-crossed the land to record the true stories of the Vikings over

a period of 1000 years up to the Middle Ages, all the legendary blood feuds and fearless warrior women made popular by The Vikings mini-series. The Sagas are fourty unique and authentic stories describing the settlement of Iceland, detailing the heroic Viking raids abroad and blood-feuds at home. Originally written on calf-skins, they are the absolute crown jewels of Icelandic culture, credited with being the true inspiration behind Lord of the Rings and the mini-series Game of Thrones. Now, as an Associate

Professor teaching Creative Writing and Literary Studies at QUT, Kári has taught in both Australia and Iceland. At the weekend retreat on the Tablelands, Kári will share how to bring memoir to life and use it to develop plots and characters. This entails writing from what you know, and turning lived experience into a basis for fiction or nonfiction works. Ingredients

1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Line a cupcake/muffin pan with cupcake liners. I prefer to use parchment cupcake liners* as the muffins will not stick to them at all. 2. Combine cauliflower, eggs, 1/2 cup cheese, almond flour, baking powder, Italian seasoning, onion powder and garlic powder. Mix with a large spoon or spatula until smooth. 3. Using an ice cream scooper, scoop batter into muffin cups, about 2/3 full. You should be able to fill 11 liners. Sprinkle remaining cheese over muffins. 4. Bake for 20-25 minutes until muffins are completely cooked and no longer wet to the touch. If desired, garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving.

In Loving Memory Of 18/05/1969 ~ 11/02/2017 A mother gives her child life, And love unlike no other. When that is taken away, She then becomes a grieving mother. When my angel’s heart stopped beating, My heart just broke right in two. They tell me there is reason, They say that time will heal. But neither time or reason, Will change the way I feel. For no one knows how many times, I’ve broken down and cried. But I hold her deep within my heart, And there she will remain. To walk with me throughout my life, Until we meet again. Greatly missed by her loving Mum.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT

Liam’s off to Moto Stars

THIRTEEN-year-old Mareeba motorbike star Liam Waters (pictured) is heading south to compete in the Moto Stars 2018 series for junior motorcycle road racers. The training and race series is being run by former Australian MotoGP star Damian Cudlin to promote young Australian talent and provide a path into professional motorcycle racing and Liam couldn’t be more excited. “The thing I love about racing road bikes is not only how much fun it is but all the friendly people I have met since I started,” he said. “My dream is to race MotoGP and whilst I am currently racing a Honda NSF100 I will also be working on developing my skills on a Honda NSF250R Moto3 bike.” Liam is a member of the Far North Queensland Road Racing Club (FNQRRC) and the Road Racing Association of Townsville (RRAT). He has only been racing for the 2017 season but has

already shown a surprising talent for the sport. At 1.4m and 30 kgs Liam is on the small size for his age hence his nickname “Midge” however in motorcycle road racing this is only an advantage where less weight means more power on the track. RRAT in Townsville has a thriving junior series which has enabled Liam to race against some of the best junior riders in the state. Fortunately for the Far North there is a great facility on the Tablelands for Karting and Motorcycle racing at the Mako Trac in Mareeba which has almost become a second home to Liam. If there are any young aspiring riders in the region that are interested in junior road racing then they should contact either the FNQRR or RRAT for further information. Liam is currently looking for local sponsorship to support him during the 2018 season. You can follow or contact Liam on his facebook page.

Soccer sign-on for all the family For all football fans, players and kids across Australia this year is just a little bit more special, with the mighty Socceroos making their way to Russia to take part in the FIFA World Cup. While Russia may be a long way from Mareeba, the Bulls are gearing up for a big year ahead, with the clubs young stars hoping to emulate the feats of their heroes at the world cup. The clubs is holding sign on this Friday night for all junior kids from six years to sixteen, with the

club in a unique position to be able to offer the entire family the opportunity to play the world game according to club TD Alex Srhoj. “It is pretty special when you can invite the entire family to sign up and play at one club – young sister, older brother, dad and even mum can sign up and play for the Bulls, we are just about the only sport that can cater for all levels male and female from 6 to 16 and seniors above” Srhoj stated. 2017 was a great year

for the club across all junior divisions with the U14 and U15 sides making the grand final, with the 15’s winning, the U12B side also made the semi’s as well as the all girls junior team, with 2018 expecting to be stronger and better. The club is looking to nominate age brackets from U6 all the way to U16 with all girls team in U7-8, U11-12 and U13-14 with numbers strong in 2017, the club is hoping of more young girls to join their brothers and come and play the world game.

“Soccer is fantastic for kids, it helps with all aspects of physical and mental development in a very safe and enjoyable environment. They learn to use their motor skills from a young age, but also its about being smarter better footballers” Srhoj stated. The clubs sign on evening is this Friday 5.30pm to 7pm at MUFC clubhouse at Lindsay Australia Stadium, all new and old players are welcome to come and sign and join the club and run with the Bulls in 2018.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Cricket Far North T20 final winners

Atherton followed up Saturday’s win with another title on Sunday after defeating Norths in the Cricket Far North T20 grand final. After winning the toss, Atherton elected to bowl first and Norths completed their innings at 5-148. In reply, Atherton claimed the victory 7-152 with two balls remaining. Mick Salerno hit the winning runs finishing with 20 off 12 balls. Brendan Nasser 38, Paul Nasser 35 and Gerard Fox 30 all scored well in Atherton’s run chase. Two day action continues for Atherton this Saturday when they host United at Loder Park. PICTURED: Atherton batsman Brendan Nasser.

Atherton’s big weekend of wins Atherton 1st Grade (pictured) have brought home the 1-Day shield with a 4 wicket win over reigning premiers Mulgrave in the 1-Day Grand Final played at Fuller Park on Saturday. Mulgrave elected to bat first and were forced to work hard for their runs by some tidy bowling and energetic fielding. Atherton’s bowlers worked to a plan, stifling the Toad’s dangerous batting line-up and were backed up by a great allround fielding effort.

Big weekend of junior cricket

In the Under 12’s comp Mareeba took on Douglas Muddies at Firth Park. Mareeba batted first and scored 99 with Jake Bombardieri 21 and Jonty Taylor 17 not out. Muddies then batted well to take the win by 17 runs in a close finish. Best bowlers for Mareeba were Jack Kruse 2/9 and Jett Apps 1/5. The Under 14’s saw Mareeba take on Norths from Cairns with the match ending in an exciting 136 all Draw with Mareeba batting second to chase down the total. All batters contributed well with openers Patrick Cockburn (21) and Joel Muccignat (19) getting off to a great start with a 60 run partnership. Mareeba improved their bowling performance as well with Joel Muccignat 1/4 and Bailey Olufson 1/3 being the best for Mareeba.

Michael Salerno picked up 5 wickets, Seppe Barletta 3, Dan Parnell and Tom Boorman 1 each and Paul Nasser gave nothing away with a miserly economy rate of 2. The highlight of the fielding was a spectacular airborne diving catch from Dan Parnell in covers. Mulgrave were bowled out in the 37th over for 122. Atherton lost a couple of early wickets and the game was delicately poised in the middle stages before Dan Parnell and Brendan Nasser steadied things

in a 32 run partnership. Brothers Brendan and Paul Nasser dug in next putting on a 54 run partnership, and putting the game out of Mulgrave’s reach before Tom Boorman finished off with a 4, winning the match with 9 overs to spare and 4 wickets in hand. Result: Atherton 6-125 (P Nasser 38, B Nasser 28, D Parnell 20, T Boorman 14*) Def. Mulgrave 122 (M Salerno 5-20, S Barletta 3-24, D Parnell 1-25, T Boorman 1-31)
