T
HE Tablelands Regional Council will request the establishment of a ‘Without Prejudice’ meeting with the relevant parties involved in the de-amalgamation cash split dispute, which could see the matter settled out of court. Councillors successfully voted to accept the findings tabled in a report by Executive Projects Officer, Lachlan Peden – with the court date currently pencilled in for December 8 and 9 in Cairns.
In his report, Mr Peden said: “The TRC has engaged MacDonnells Solicitors and Barrister, Stephen Fynes-Clinton to represent our council in a challenge under the Judicial Review Act of the Minister’s decision on the de-amalgamation cash split. “This engagement stems from the fact that (the) TRC has to pay some $5.4 million to (the) MSC in respect to roads that were incorrectly classified in the Crowe Howarth report as belonging to the TRC – when in fact, they have always been MSC roads.

“The Crowe Howarth report containing the error, was relied upon by the Minister when making her decision to award $26,053,002 to the MSC and $26,024,048 to the TRC.” He added: “The costs associated with the action could be as high as $260,000, however if we win the case, it may be possible to recover some of the costs from other parties. Likewise if we lose the case, we may be required to pay some of the other parties’ costs.” TRC Acting CEO Matthew Hyde said negotiations on the issue had taken place over several
months after the decision was released in May. “We have commenced legal proceedings to get a fair result regarding the cash split decision resulting from the de-amalgamation of the Mareeba Shire,” he said. “This is to ensure an equitable result for our ratepayers and community.” Mr Hyde added that a request for the MSC to participate in the ‘Without Prejudice’ meeting had been successfully received by MSC legal representatives. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore declined to comment on the matter for legal reasons.

Long serving staff recognised at hospital The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service launched its inaugural ‘Recognition Week’ on Tuesday September 15 at the Cedric Davies Memorial Garden at Mareeba Hospital - to honour long serving and outstanding staff. Staff from both the Mareeba and Atherton hospitals participated in special ceremonies held across the Far North to honour 2840 staff across the CHHHS who have collectively given more than 33,600 years of service. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board Chair Bob Norman said it was a chance to honour the hardworking staff who worked around the clock to provide top quality healthcare to the community. Mareeba Hospital’s Community Health Nurse Unit Manager Kerry Grigg was one of the staff recognised for 35 years service, as was Amanda Powell for 33 years as part of the Oral Health Unit with Queensland Health. Mrs Powell went into nursing at the age of 18 and has worked at Mareeba Hospital from day one. She was joined by several other long-serving colleagues who have also contributed to providing top quality care to the Mareeba community. “I think that all the different people I have worked with over the years makes me want to continue in this field; all the dentists the students from JCU and the patients,” she said. “What I noticed has changed a lot is how we do infection control from when I first started. “The oral unit is moving ahead in leaps and bounds and is becoming very popular amongst patients.” A total of 280 staff were recognised on the Tablelands.

AN epic challenge awaits members of the Mareeba Mountain Goats mountain bike club, who will be participating in the upcoming Pump N Pedals FN Epic, which will be held on Sunday, October 4 from 9am. Held over three challenging distances (30km – ‘A taste of Epic’, 50km – ’50 Kays of Epic’ and 100km – FN Epic) riders will be treated to a picturesque backdrop and many unique elements. One of these elements is the sheer amount of elevation – particularly in the 100km component. Riders will climb a total of 2500m during their arduous journey. MMG members Pam Lavers and Debbie Jerome were excited about the event and said club participation numbers had been steadily increasing; especially at junior level. “The Mareeba Mountain Goats are community members who are interested in mountain bike riding,” Ms Lavers said. “Over the years, they’ve developed the mountain bike trails out at Davies Creek – which
is about 23km of trails. “It’s a free facility for the public to use out there and they run a number of events throughout the year – with the FN Epic the major event of the year. “All the entry fees from the Epic will go to just developing more trails and improving the facilities out there.” It is important to note that the FN Epic is inclusive for all ages (18+) and abilities across each distance, with any child under 15 required to ride alongside with a parent or guardian. Both Ms Lavers and Ms Jerome said they were thankful of Pump N Pedal’s sponsorship of the event, along with the involvement of the Kanjini Co-op – who has allowed access of normally restricted trails to the riders. It appears the man to catch this year will again be Jeff Rubach, who won last year’s 100km event in only 4 hours and 36 minutes. ‘A significant moment for Council’ Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore has described the draft of the MSC planning scheme as: “The most important document his council has produced”. At the regular Mareeba Shire Council meeting on September 16, the council approved the Draft Mareeba Shire Council Planning Scheme and will provide written notice to the Minister seeking approval to adopt the draft scheme. “Public consultation of the draft planning scheme was conducted between January and March 2013. “A total of 2047 submissions were received during consultation - 923 submissions were of relevance to Mareeba Shire,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “Council have considered and workshopped the submissions and minor changes have been made to the draft planning scheme in response to some submissions. “Each submitter will receive a written response from Council advising how Council has dealt with their submission,” Cr Gilmore said. Council will now proceed with the following informal community engagement/education process following the provision of responses to each submitter: Council officers will prepare
ers will conduct one (1) day walk in, face to face information sessions in Kuranda, Julatten and Mareeba to provide detailed information on how Council has responded to the issues raised during the formal public consultation of the planning scheme. “This is a significant document and a significant moment for Council. Council would like to acknowledge the hard work and effort put in by Senior Planning Officer Brian Millard and Planning Officer Carl Ewin, as well as the efforts of Cardno HRP (town planning consultants) and the TRC Planning Officers,” Mayor Gilmore said. “This document is based on work done by the previous Tableland Regional Council over a considerable period of time when the community was consulted by way of community meetings and displays of the material in every community in the TRC; and it will replace the previous planning scheme which was gazetted in 1994 and brought into practise in 1995,” Cr Gilmore concluded. A copy of the entire planning scheme will be made available on Council’s website and a hard copy will be made available at Council’s offices and libraries.

‘Totally Ridiculous Concept’ over contract By Justin Fris IN fighting for independence in the late 1770’s, one thing that the United States and Britain could never seem to agree on was the role of tea in society. Fast forward to 2015 and the purchase of tea bags and other small items in Tablelands Regional Council towns is causing an equally decisive wedge. TRC Cr Shaaron Linwood astounded much of the public gallery last Thursday morning, when she said council employees (for example those who work in depots and libraries in Herberton and Millaa Millaa) are only contractually allowed to purchase company items such as tea bags and coffee from Atherton. “It’s with much disgust that I note that Council
has signed a contract with an Atherton supplier, which now means the purchase of items such as tea bags and coffee are now supplied from Atherton; and council workers are not able to purchase these items from local businesses. “I believe this is an absolutely disgusting act from this council – with absolutely no consideration for the impact on small businesses in our regional areas who are struggling.” Acting CEO Matthew Hyde responded to Cr Linwood’s comments and said the tendered contract had been in place for several years – and that any potential motion suggesting otherwise should be considered very carefully. “The (tendering) contract has been in place for a number of years,” he said. “This contract was resigned recently.

“I suggest you have a report to consider the whole contract, not just a couple of matters. There will, or may, be compensation issues for the contractors. “That contract is with a local company within the TRC, so it’s better that you make an informed decision rather than an ad hoc decision.” Herberton Supermarket owner Shirley Howell said the TRC’s tender contract – along with cuts to other council services – have been devastating for the town. “The Council workers always used to come in and buy items from our shop,” she said. “We even used to cater for council functions – but now these services have been taken away.
“There was even a gentleman who used to come in for the TRC and process who came in to pay their rates. He was required to bring his own milk from Atherton.” These sentiments were echoed by a Foodworks Ravenshoe spokeswoman, who said: “I find it hard to understand why the council wishes to not support local businesses, let alone the cost of fuel to Atherton and time. I believe this decision is again showing the lack of support for local businesses, who seem to be the only ones interested in the town’s growth.” Many ratepayers within the TRC may agree with the headline ‘Totally Ridiculous Concept’ – ironic, given its acronym.

Candidate’s unique idea to get feedback from locals By Justin Fris
Liberal candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin received a visit from LNP Shadow Minister for Education and Training Tim Mander and MSC councillor Karen Ewin last Friday.
LIBERAL candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin spent last Friday along Byrnes Street in Mareeba spending time with hundreds of important people – Kennedy electorate residents. Originally from Mareeba and currently based in Georgetown – Ms Ikin is very much a people person and very passionate about what she does. Ms Ikin came up with a novel concept called a ‘Listening Post’, where she would sit in the main street and embrace feedback from anyone and everyone. On a week where the nation saw a new Prime Minister sworn in (Malcolm Turnbull) and a fierce by-election conducted (in Canning, Western Australia), Ms Ikin said all of her interactions were very positive. “Sitting here today in Mareeba, the locals have been extremely polite,” she
said. “They’ve talked mainly about the things that have been happening here locally – Panama Disease (causes and consequences), Native Title issues; and both title issues that were brought up, I was able to solve them today. “With regards to the leadership challenge, the main comment I suppose is that people are unhappy about the process – they see politics as being a nasty game and the stereotype of that you cannot trust a politician. “But generally, there is a sense of confidence in this government and they just want us to get along with the job. “The North Australian White Paper is a bit of a topic of discussion – just looking at where the opportunities are for the region.” Ms Ikin ran for the seat of Kennedy in 2013, where she polled a very strong primary vote. It was only after preferences were distributed, that she was defeated.
But rather than mull or be concerned over preferences, Ms Ikin said she would focus on working as hard as possible to instil her claims for election in 2017. With a strong view on persisting with youth and including them in important decision making, Ms Ikin added that she looked forward to working and meeting with several bright minds within the electorate in coming months.

TABLELANDS Regional Council ratepayers living in Mt Garnet have every reason to feel disillusioned about their local council, after yet another setback to the town. With Mayor Rosa Lee Long using her casting vote (along with support from Cr’s Peter Hodge and Geoff Stocker) in favour of officer Gus Yates’s report, the decision means that the installation of a new Patrol Officer in the town is now highly unlikely in the short-term, due to financial reasons. Since receiving a letter in September 2014 from the Mt Garnet Progress Association on the matter, this item has sat in the action list of each meeting agenda – ironic as now, there will be no action.
Cr Shaaron Linwood – who has fiercely lobbied for locals over the same period – said she would be prepared to salary sacrifice if it meant the town could receive better services. “Personally, I would happily salary sacrifice to help appoint someone even part-time, so that this small community which asks so little of Council, could be given a better service,” she said. “I have to wonder if we might not be much better served in using the money we are putting towards things like fighting the cash split legal costs, to instead go towards providing a much needed position to a very deserving small town. “There are local people out there who have become so concerned about the accumulation of mainte-
nance work that needs doing, that they have taken it upon themselves to get in and do the heavy pruning and cleaning that is required in some areas; and this should not need to be done. “I support the local ratepayers totally in their sincere belief that the best outcome for them would be to have in place a patrolman who lives in the town - who has pride in the town and who would be able to carry out a very wide range of tasks to keep the town functioning and maintained as it should be.” Cr Stocker said that although he could sympathise with those living in Mt Garnet, he felt a review of the delivery model in future years would be a great opportunity. “Financially at the moment, we are very much stressed,” he said.

BUTCHERY Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth, Meeting organiser Mick Borzi, CHHHS board Chairman Bob Norman and CHHHS CEO, Julie HartleyJones C.B.E
More than 150 concerned locals gathered at the Dimbulah Town Hall last Monday evening, after former Mareeba Mayor and health care advocate Mick Borzi called locals to unite to have their health facility upgraded. In the past, governments have plundered hundreds of millions of dollars from the Dimbulah community at the height of the tobacco industry. The State Government is now finding it difficult to decide whether they (Dimbulah Residents) should even have a new facility. Chairman of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health (CHHHS) Board Bob Norman
said: “In many instances, locals assume that the current facility is a hospital - it is in fact a health care facility - a first aid post if you will. “We have been looking at the facility for a number of years; acknowledging that it is due for a complete rebuild. If we had the money, we would start building immediately.” MP Shane Knuth was astonished by the determination and turnout by the locals. “Everyone acknowledges that this is an aging population, so health has become the most important issue to this community and its surrounding area. We’re hoping the strength of
this meeting, the support from the CHHHS board, the Mareeba Shire Council and the community it will carry some weight for the minister and the government to acknowledge that this need is real,” Mr Knuth said. Mick Borzi, who was instrumental in securing the future of the Mareeba hospital, said: “$1.2 million will do the trick - chicken feed in the overall scheme of health care - and this community deserves it and the State Government needs to act swiftly.” Locals were invited to sign the petition which will be presented to the minister.

TABLELANDS Futures Corporation chairman Michael Lawrence presented his quarterly update to the Tablelands Regional Council last Thursday morning. Within Mr Lawrence’s presentation, he outlined the international significance of the upcoming ‘Crocodile Trophy’ mountain bike race, which encompasses most of the Far North. An event which is beamed live on television into Asia and Europe – and provides several economic and social benefits to the region – has not appeared to be fully embraced by the Atherton township, which is one of the major stops for the race. Mr Lawrence said: “We’ve been co-ordinating with the staff in terms of getting better signage (for the race), in and outside the (mountain bike) park. “Because if people don’t know where the park is, they won’t necessarily be able to find it that easy. So there is naturally some investment attraction with that.” Cr’s Shaaron Linwood and Rod Marti – who are both loyal advocates for community events – spoke with Mr Lawrence about what local businesses can do to improve their output during the event. Cr Linwood said: “It is always of a huge concern to me that
this is a huge thing overseas and yet it whips through Atherton in the blink of an eye and 90 per cent of the population don’t even know it has happened. “My real point is the fact that mountain biking is huge in the area – but trying to promote that to locals with local businesses is very difficult. “The Crocodile Trophy is giving the region major promotion overseas and yet no one here even seems to know it is happening. And if we (TRC) could only lift the profile of the event to get more of the community onside, it would be very beneficial. “I look at a lot of the small businesses and they are not taking advantage of the opportunities that are there.” Major international events such as the Crocodile Trophy are extremely beneficial, both economically and socially for local towns. From added traffic in local accommodation, increased cash flow or even extended stays at local attractions – events such as these can provide longterm legacies to businesses of any size. The 2015 Crocodile Trophy will pass through Atherton on both October 19 and 20, which is part of Stages 3 and 4 of the race. Complete disarray plagues TRC meeting By Justin Fris Tablelands Regional Council ratepayers who live in either division two, four or six continue to be routinely denied an equitable position on several important issues that impact them. Last Thursday morning’s meeting saw TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long use her casting vote four times – with Cr Hodge (three times) and Cr Stocker (four times) using their support to get a majority needed to pass through the various motions or items presented. The meeting was adjourned for 20 minutes after emotions spilled over, with Mayor Lee Long, Deputy CEO Matthew Hyde and Cr’s Peter Hodge and Geoff Stocker holding a brief adjournment meeting outside the boardroom. After the meeting had concluded, Cr Shaaron Linwood was asked by The Express whether she and Cr Rod Marti had been invited to participate in the adjournment meeting with the group; she said they were not. Cr Marjorie Pagani (who this time successfully participated in a meeting via teleconference) confirmed that she plans to take legal action on circumstances that arose from the meeting held on August 20. “The reason for this, firstly, is that our Standing Orders prohibit comments being included in the minutes. “Secondly, the event (Cr Pagani declining to participate in the August 20 meeting) did not occur. I have a complete record of every conversation with councillors and staff on that day. “And subsequently, at no time, did I ever speak to Cr’s Lee Long, Hodge or Stocker (during the adjournment) nor did
Queensland Rail’s Operations Manager North Queensland Robert McCartney and Mayor Tom Gilmore on the new seat located at the recently opened bus station.
Commemorative seat gift by Queensland Rail Mareeba Shire Council and the local Mareeba community have been gifted a commemorative railway bench seat by Queensland Rail as part of the state’s celebrations of 150 years of rail in Queensland. The seat was specially made at the Railway Workshops in Ipswich, in conjunction with local manufacturers, to replicate a Queensland Government Railways platform seat from the 1920s; and has now found a permanent home at the new Mareeba bus stop on Walsh Street. Queensland Rail’s Operations Manager North Queensland Robert McCartney said the seat was a
special thank you to the Mareeba community and part of an initiative to donate 150 gifts to communities throughout the year. “Queensland Rail has a rich history throughout the state and has come a long way in 150 yearsbut the rail industry wouldn’t be where it is today without the contribution and support of Queensland communities,” Mr McCartney said. “This seat is one of just 50 which were donated to communities around Queensland and has been specially made at the Railway Workshops from an original mould, including the signature cast iron legs.
“This seat will provide the local community with a glimpse into the history of rail in Mareeba, and serve as a permanent reminder of this year’s celebrations of 150 years of rail in Queensland.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he was thankful to Queensland Rail for the donation. “It was a pleasure to host the steam train in February where Mareeba residents were able to help celebrate 150 years of rail in Queensland,” Cr Gilmore said. “Council would like to thank Queensland Rail for their generosity and momento to remember this historic occasion.”

they speak to me.” She added: “During the course of events, the meeting was adjourned. I was telephoned from the Mayor’s office – believing it was still in the council meeting. “I was not told the call was in the Mayor’s office. The Acting CEO has advised me he was directed to make the call from his personal mobile and to put it on speaker. “At no time was I advised that I was in the Mayor’s office and that the meeting had been adjourned. The Acting CEO alleged that there were three councillors listening in to the call in the Mayor’s office.” These claims have been denied by both Mr Hyde and Mayor Lee Long in recent weeks to The Express, with rationale structure and correct quorum of the August 20 meeting officially complying with LGAQ legislation. After Cr Pagani had concluded, Mr Hyde said: “I will reiterate what I said at the last Council meeting. Cr Pagani has advised that she will be taking legal action. “And I ask you (all) to consider what you make as a statement at this point in time; because it will or could, if Cr Pagani continues to lodge the legal action – be part of that course.” Various spot fires would flare up prior to the adjournment – with Mayor Lee Long considering suspending Cr Pagani for the remainder of the meeting – however this motion was withdrawn after the adjournment. For ratepayers in attendance, the meeting gave yet another sobering eyeful of complete disarray by six individuals who are expected to competently and cohesively govern their local jurisdiction.

The LAND Record breaking year Knuth continues in Mareeba continues
THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 1311 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday September 15, which was up 24 from the previous sale. This year will be one that many in our region will forget for quite some time – with records falling freely like rain drops. Midweight steers were in solid supply and improved steadily in price. A line of 22 C4 scores topped an impressive 276.2c/kg ($1,546.72). No heavier (750kg) steers were yarded this week – although this was made up by healthy averages across the board. Midweight cows were the flavour of the week after a mini slump, with a mem-
orable saleyard record Mid type heifers took a sizeable hit, and only made up to 242.2c/kg. Lighter types again dominated the bull component of the yarding and sold to a top of 249.2c/kg. 2 C4 midweights (500kg-650kg) fetched a memorable 276.2c/kg ($1,492.20) – which was a new saleyard record. If you would like to nominate your cattle for any upcoming sale, please contact your local agent or the Mareeba Saleyards on 0439 737 175. Sales commence at 9am on Tuesday, with nominated cattle required by 7pm each Monday night (prior to the sale).
Katter’s ‘disgust’ at coalition agreement By Justin Fris FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has voiced his disgust at the latest coalition agreement between the Liberal Party and the Nationals. A process which reportedly only took two hours – deeply disappointed Mr Katter, who said rural and regional areas were effectively being sold out. “The National Party rolled over in two hours. We’re deeply, deeply, disappointed,” Mr Katter said. “Minister Joyce raised our expectations - he made a very strong statement that they weren’t going to just walk into a Coalition Agreement; and yet two hours later they had a coalition, but with virtually nothing to show for it. “The last time we had a Country Party
and Doug Anthony was leader, negotiations went on for two weeks and it was very doubtful at the end whether there was going to be a oalition, because the Country Party were quite happy to sit as a minority government if they did not get what they needed for rural Australia.” Mr Katter shed some light into the negation process during the 2010 election, when he was one of four men who held the balance of power in federal politics. “We spent two weeks negotiating during this period and I put forward 20 priorities for the Kennedy electorate. 13 of these were agreed upon by the Liberal Party and seven were agreed by the Labor Party,” he said. “We weren’t just going to roll in bed with anyone – and they certainly weren’t going to drag commitment out of us.”

push for canegrowers By Justin Fris MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has continued his push for a better deal for local canegrowers in the Far North. Mr Knuth’s ‘Real Choice in Marketing Bill’ is set to be moved forward to December 3, where it will be voted on in parliament. “This move alone shows that there is significant support for our Bill,” Mr Knuth said. “I see this as recognition from both the Government and Opposition that there is significant support for our efforts to provide real choice in sugar marketing. “It is imperative action is taken. “This endorsement should be encouraging news for all of Queensland who survives off the back of the sugar industry. “This provides the numbers for the bill to be passed with the support from either the Government or the Opposition,” Mr Knuth said. “Immediate action needs to take place – it is clear this Bill is the solution the industry has been crying out for.” Independent Member for Cook Billy Gordon released a statement outlining his support for Mr Knuth on the matter. “Having worked in, and grownup around cane farms, in and outside of the Cook electorate, I have real, personal knowledge of the hard work and commitment of cane growers for the industry,” he said. “I’ll be reading closely all new propositions, including any further amendments to the Bill, from now until December, to ensure transparency and that changes suggested do not dilute the growers economic interests.” Tableland Canegrowers Manager Bronwyn Dwyer said she was thankful of the role both Mr Knuth and Mr Gordon played in the formulation of the Bill. “From a Tableland Canegrow

ers perspective, it was us who worked very closely with Mr Knuth to formulate a draft of the Bill,” she said. “We are very thankful for the support and time of both Mr Knuth and Mr Gordon on this issue. “The Bill is critical for local
growers, as we do need choice on who markets our share of sugar. “Having said this, it is important that Qld Sugar Ltd is still one of our choices – as they not only have access to overseas markets, but also currently control the sugar terminals.”
SUGAR REPORT Mossman Mill crushed 41,745 tonnes of cane at an average CCS of 13.62 for Week 18 of the crushing season. The factory had good reliability with the major issue being the throughput at the evaporators.

accuracies corrected, and at the same time hiding behind some misplaced right to silence when asked to correct the wrong (and then trying to have me removed from the meeting for seeking redress). It was, as he said, totally unacceptable. I urge people to come to these meetings to see the appalling lack of democratic process. The Mayor is at the helm of it - but it is Hodge and Stocker who are the enablers. When it appears as though rock bottom has been reached in this council, the ground falls away even further. Good luck to Cr Hodge’s ‘like-minded’ team candidates - if this is the standard of conduct they share. Marjorie Pagani, Tolga
tions of assault are the subject of an ongoing police enquiry again at tax payers expense and would have been concluded by now if Mr Gordon had co operated with police. The courts and voters will sort all this out in due course. The other claim Mr Gordon makes is that whilst he has been sitting out his nine months in the cafes of Cairns, he has scored several wins for the people of Cook. Mr Gordon claims he “Got back the Mareeba Airport after the LNP took it away last year”. The truth is that Labor promised the funds to upgrade the airport several years ago and reneged. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore and I put together the business case and lobbied the LNP for the funds which were signed, sealed and delivered during my term. Mr Gordon had nothing to do with it. The “water and sewerage stuff” he also claims again came from hard work by Mayor Gilmore and I. The boat ramps again were an election promise and delivered by me. What was funded and has since been canned by Labor under Mr Gordon’s watch are the birthing centre for Weipa, the renal unit for Bamaga, the Diwan Health clinic and the PDR is in tatters and the list goes on. It’s a matter for Mr Gordon how he can best serve the people of Cook - but he won’t get a free ride off the back of all the work the LNP did. David Kempton, Cairns
I refer to the most recent council meeting (September 3), where the minutes were accepted without debate, despite challenge from Councillor Shaaron Linwood. The minutes, prepared by the acting CEO at the direction of the Mayor, moved a ‘resolution’ “noting” that I had been “invited” by Cr’s Hodge, Stocker and LeeLong to participate in the council meeting. There are a number of issues here, all of which go to the heart of our democratic process; and to the inappropriate conduct of the three. Firstly, a “note” does not become a resolution. The “note” about the conversation with me ought not have been in the minutes, disguised as a resolution. Secondly, there was no such “invitation” – at no time did I speak to, nor was spoken to, by any of the three. It is a total Member for Cook needs to get busy and deliberate misrepresentation. When I raised this early on the morning of the meeting (which, ultimately, I was far In a Rupert Murdoch-based publication north of Cairns on too ill to attend) with the acting CEO, he agreed that I did not September 10, the Member for Cook Billy Gordon claims the have any conversation with any of the three (despite stating political blowtorch was applied to his belly - and now the alto the contrary in the minutes). He did say: “They were in the legations of domestic violence seem to have gone away - he room”. I reiterated that the minutes he had prepared at the can get on with the job after nine months of inactivity at tax direction of the Mayor were untruthful. He said: “Well, you payers expense. can debate that”. At the meeting which followed, Cr Linwood I am sure his two former partners whose lives have been did attempt to do just that – as was her right when the accu- ruined by these assaults sympathise with him. These allegaracy of the minutes was tabled for discussion. The Acting CEO said the accuracy of the minutes could not be debated because I had threatened legal action. There is no circumstance, ever, in which there is a gag on the right to debate the accuracy of the minutes. He deliberately misrepresented the situation to prevent debate on the minutes. Earlier, he had asked me what action I was going to take. I responded by saying “no matter what I say you will just run back and tell the mayor”. He replied “well, we can have two separate conversations then”. I declined this offer. He then asked me if I had taped the conversations with him (as there were never any conversations with the three or any of them), and I declined to respond. The Mayor had adjourned the meeting (and neither she nor the Acting CEO advised me of this), and according to the Acting CEO, she directed him to go into her office with Crs Hodge and Stocker, and phone me on his personal mobile phone – this was clearly so that I would not know it was a secret meeting away from the public and all other councillors. During the September 3 meeting, the three sat mute when Cr Linwood challenged their version of events – and then falsely voted for the correctness of the minutes. I have a record of the relevant conversations. The minutes are wrong; the actions of the three are dishonest, misleading and wrong; and the covering up/enabling of these actions by the acting CEO is also wrong. To add insult to the injury, the prior meeting was decided, in every case, by only the three, as the Acting CEO had given incorrect advice to Cr’s Linwood and Marti that if they left the meeting there would not be a quorum. The three then proceeded Open Mic Show to determine each matter at the meeting. One of those matters involved a development application in Yungaburra. Cr Hodge failed to declare a real or perceived conflict, and voted to approve the development, notwithstanding the marketing of that company’s land is carried out by his newly-selected Bush Poetry 7am ‘team candidate’ for division 6 (and her husband is Talent Quest 9am the sales manager). Yet in the following meeting (where there was no issue as to quorum) he did declare a conflict involving his ‘candidate’ for Malanda’s division – referring to his “team candidate” only as his “colleague”. Here is another person I raised these issues at the September 17the meetTyson Lucas for poster ing – setting out the details ofand the incorrect notations Saturday Night line up and minutes – and asked Cr Hodge to respond to my motion to have those items deleted from the record. Neither he, nor the Mayor, nor Cr Stocker, would respond. They relied on the Acting CEO (himself imBrothers 3 plicated in the deception) advising that they should Wendy Coppo not speak in case legal proceedings were launched. What a load of nonsense. If they were being truthBeccy Nethery TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE GATE ful, there would be nothing to fear from speaking Narelle Glover out. Cr Hodge then tried to have the discussion in BAR, FOOD, CAMPING & ALL AMENITIES ‘confidential’ session, away from the public – notw: www.fnqcmf.webs.com Tyson Lucas withstanding he was happy to make public the pree: wcmc1@bigpond.com Phoebe Jay vious statements when only the three of them were walkamincmc able to vote. I then gave Cr Stocker the opportunity Careless of correcting the wrong – or stating that I was being Kurdaz Country Band untruthful – as the allegations arose from dishonPru esty. He then moved a point of order, supported by 3 Blind Mice Spe the Mayor, to have me suspended from the meeting – but at no time would he deny the accuracy of my assertions (knowing by then that I had a record of the conversations). areeba I applaud the candour of Cr Marti’s accurate asodeo Bush Poetry 7am & sertions – that they had all severely compromised themselves, by denying me the right to have the inThis project is funded by Mareeba RADF – The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a

Palm Cove dishes up Reef Feast
Chefs will be dishing up tasting plates featuring local produce and home brewers will be battling for beer awards as an array of entertainment is served up at Palm Cove’s Reef Feast on October 8-11. Tourism Palm Cove President Francetta Bridle said the annual Reef Feast held alongside Palm Cove’s palm-fringed beach would celebrate Tropical North Queensland’s lifestyle and unique regional produce with nine events over four days encompassing food, wine, beer, fashion, art and music. “New to Reef Feast this year is an emphasis on the local farmers who supply incredibly diverse produce to Palm Cove’s 30 restaurants for their chefs to transform into tropical dishes and drinks to be enjoyed beside the Coral Sea,” she said. “Cairns Airport is presenting Reef Feast in 2015 as part of the Tropical Queensland Export Exchange, an initiative of the Airport, in collaboration with Cairns Regional Council and Trade and Investment Queensland, to grow the profile of Tropical North Queensland's produce and create international trade opportunities. “The Exchange involves 50 visiting media from the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists who will attend Reef Feast which we hope will result in an international profile next year.” Mrs Bridle said Reef Feast had become a much
anticipated event on the Tropical North Queensland events calendar with more than 11,000 people attending last year. “Our opening event, Cocktails and Coconuts on Thursday, October 8 will set the tone for four days and three nights of fun with a fire show, coconut dancers and canapes. “Prawns and Jazz at the Jetty on Friday, October 9 will be a great family evening overlooking the Coral Sea as the sun goes down with buckets of prawns, jazz and entertainment for the kids. “On Saturday, October 10 the third TNQ Beer Awards will be hotly contested by some remarkably talented home brewers and Taste of Palm Cove under the Stars will have tasting stalls operated by Palm Cove’s restaurants as well as music and entertainment. “The Reef Feast Palm Cove Market Day on Sunday, October 11 will feature farmer’s produce markets alongside stalls with tasting plates, arts and crafts. “In between there will be events for those who enjoy sparkling wine and fine dining, a golf day, a Kashmiri feast and Feast for the Eyes celebrating fashion, hair and makeup.” For more information on the events go to reeffeast.com.au.

What’s on at the Rising Sun Cinema
There's a pulsating program of top holiday fare at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema, with all the big new blockbuster titles playing in Mareeba, at exactly the same time as the rest of Australia. New on the big screen this week is the exciting family fantasy adventure PAN. Based on the story of Peter Pan, starring Hugh Jackmanand Amanda Seyfried. BLINKY BILL is a lovely and colourful new interpretation of this iconic character, in a film for the young and the young at heart. PIXELS and MAZE RUNNER - THE SCORCH TRIALS, are both top rate viewing and well worth seeing.
Pan
The story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.
Blinky Bill The Movie
Blinky Bill (Ryan Kwanten) leaves the little haven of Green Patch to search for his missing adventurer father Mr Bill (Richard Roxburgh) who left a year earlier to rescue lost animals. Blinky sets off naively, albeit with good intentions without telling his mother (Deborah Mailman). But he quickly discovers that the world beyond Green patch - the Outback - is a dangerous place and is confronted by a vicious feral cat Sir Claude (Rufus Sewell) and hungry crocodiles. He finds an unexpected ally when he meets Nutsy (Robin McLeavy), a feisty zoo koala plus Jacko (David Wenham), the nervous frill-necked lizard and two helpful emus (Toni Collette), who all help him on his adventure. Review by Louise Keller: Never give up is the theme of Blinky Bill The Movie, a family friendly road movie crammed with all things Australian. There are kookaburras, kangaroos, gum trees, goannas, tree rats, gum nuts, bush tea, a frill necked lizard, crocodiles, emus, possums, echidnas, platypuses, akubra hats and boomerangs. It's a colourful, high spirited tale with endearing characters, non stop action and plenty of heart, as Australia's favourite koala embarks on a grand Outback adventure in search of his missing father.
Maze Runner – The Scorch Trials
In this next chapter of the epic "Maze Runner" saga, Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organisation known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD's vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all.
Turia Pitt – Worklink’s annual Stress Less Day luncheon speaker Turia Pitt, a mining engineer, burns survivor, motivator and author of Everything to Live For, was running an ultramarathon in Western Australia’s Kimberley area in 2011. Turia, a young and beautiful woman, became trapped in a bushfire and suffered burns to 65% of her body. With too little unburned skin left for skin grafts, Turia was put in an induced coma in the Burns Unit at Sydney’s Concord Hospital while her body fought life-threatening infections and her surgeons imported skin from California. While the story of Turia’s survival involves many people – other race competitors, her rescuers, medical professionals – at its core is the strong will of Turia herself as she continues the long rehabilitation process with the loving support of her partner, Michael Hoskin, and that of their families in their New South Wales south coast hometown of Ulladulla, where the local community has rallied, raising funds to help with huge medical bills. Everything to Live For is also a love story. Michael, Turia’s handsome teenage crush who became
the love of her life, now cares for her as they plan a new life together; he is there to encourage Turia in her determination to move forward in an outwardly different body. Despite facing a future with multiple challenges, Turia is optimistic. She is driving again and studying for both her MBA and Master’s degree. She is walking in marathons and would one day like to run again. Above all, she wants her story to make a difference: her mission is to make skin a more prominent organ in the repertoire of donated organs. It is a miracle Turia lived when she was expected to die. But Turia was not ready to die – she had too much to live for. Turia will be speaking at Worklink’s Annual Stress Less Day Luncheon on Wednesday October 7, 2015 at the Cairns Convention Centre. Each year Worklink hosts the luncheon as part of Mental Health Week to help raise awareness about mental health. Tickets are $65.00 and are available from www.worklink.org.au. For more information contact Worklink on 4031 0877.

Method 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease light colored baking sheets with non-stick cooking spray and set aside. 2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Whip in vanilla, egg, lemon zest, and juice. Scrape sides and mix again. 3. Stir in all dry ingredients slowly until just combined, excluding the powdered sugar. Scrape sides of bowl and mix again briefly. 4. Pour powdered sugar onto a large plate. Roll a heaping teaspoon of dough into a ball and roll in powdered sugar. Place on baking sheet and repeat with remaining dough. 5. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until bottoms begin to barely brown and cookies look matte (not melty or shiny). Remove from oven and cool cookies about 3 minutes before transferring to cooling rack.

The competition quality was of a very high standard, with people of all ages taking part. Pictured above are: Margot Warnett (Champion Official Novice and Elementary), Gypsy Rose Parker (Champion

Senior netball finals conclude in Mareeba Celia Foret (Belgium) and Rachel Füglister (Switzerland) both enjoyed their time in Mareeba during the Cardiac Challenge last Saturday. By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba Netball Association heralded an end to the senIor component of their season last week. All matches were eagerly fought out throughout the year and gave further indication that netball’s popularity is blooming in the town.
BEAUTIFUL sky, smiling faces and few worries were bestowed upon those who participated in the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation’s ‘Mt Franklin Cardiac Challenge’ last weekend. The lengthy ride from Cairns to Cooktown – with all funds raised going to assist cardiac health – tested mental and physical resolve. Riders spent time in Mareeba between 9.30am and 10.30am, where they were eagerly greeted by local Mareeba Rotarians, other dedicated volunteers and quality local produce to snack on. FNQHF CEO Tony Franz said he was thrilled by
the spirit amongst the participants and volunteers – and that there had been minimal issues with the temporary closure of the Kuranda Range. “Currently if you look on our website, we have raised over $225,000 ($229,453) out of pure fundraising – with our entry registration funds potentially bringing in another $100,000.” The event also saw two teenage Rotary exchange students (Celia Foret and Rachel Füglister) from Europe participate – with the pair thrilled about their time in Australia and being able to fundraise for such a worthy cause. 2016 will mark the 10th year of the race, which should continue to go from strength to strength.

EXPRESS sPORT
Red Devils make a statement The Red Devils were at their fearsome best last Thursday evening.
Bendigo Bank Mareeba branch Manager Stephen Gear with Michael Blunt and Rob Matthews are looking forward to Saturday’s golf day.
All inclusive golf day to assist Ravenshoe survivors By Justin Fris
AFTER some doubts had been raised on whether the Red Devils were still in premiership contention, the Mareeba Basketball League officially had these dispelled. With one of the most clinical displays seen in recent times, the Red Devils punished a grossly undermanned Comets 96-24. Their tally of 96 was close to being a league record in the Men’s competition and could have been easily over the 100 point mark (they went 14/25 from the field in the last quarter). Looking at such a large margin, many would assume showboating and disappointment would have rained down on the court. Both sides fought eagerly to the final whistle despite the outcome gone – and the camaraderie between older and younger players was fantastic. The Comets – who were missing Fabio Nocilla – really struggled to stamp any kind of authority on the game from the outset. Going 0/5 from the field in the first three minutes of the game did little to assist them and they finished 0/10 for the quarter and trailed 18-0. Down the other end, the Red Devils got tremendous use out of every player which took to the court. Clinton Cameron was his usual livewire self, but always did plenty to involve his teammates. Juni Bordeos built on his good form this season, displaying excellent hustle on offence. If he continues to
shine, he could well be one to keep an eye on during the finals. The Comets would score their first points of the match with 5 min 11 sec left in the second quarter – meaning they went almost 15 minutes without scoring a basket. It is not so often that a team can enjoy a 41-6 lead at half time – but this was a luxury bestowed on the Red Devils. In the second half, the efforts of Brandon Osborne really stood out. He is quietly becoming one of the most established point scorers in the league. The Comets showed marginal improvement in the final quarter, but even they could only look on in amazement as the Devils showed true class. In other matches, a severely depleted MBA Deadleys suffered their first loss of the season, with Hot Air continuing to march along their merry way, with a 41-30 victory. The Barras are still without a win, but from all accounts showed great promise in their 37-30 loss to the Stingrays. Current standings in the league are as follows: Hot Air 19, MBA Deadleys 19, Red Devils 18, Stingrays 16, Comets 16, Express 11, Barras 7. In the Ladies A-Grade, the Gummaz continued their mini revival with a 52-35 victory over the Baiada Steggles, while the Serial Killers flexed their muscles with a 78-35 win over the Deadley Mums. Matches are held each Thursday evening in the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall on Walsh Street.
‘UNDER LIGHTS’
THE Mareeba Golf Club will host Saturday’s ‘Bendigo Bank Ravenshoe Blast Charity’ golf day, which is inclusive for all ages and abilities. Beginning at 10am sharp, the format will be 4-ball Ambrose, with entry $25 per person. All proceeds from the event will go toward providing ongoing support to all survivors of the Ravenshoe tragedy. Mareeba Golf Club captain Michael Blunt said the day would also include a
quality BBQ lunch and there is plenty to do, even if you aren’t interested in golf. “If people are interested in volunteering or assisting on the day, they are more than welcome and don’t actually have to play golf,” he said. Mr Blunt also passed on his gratitude to Bendigo Bank along with all sponsors associated with the event. There are heaps of great prizes to be won on the day. Phone 4092 1528 to register.
Close shave for Mareeba Bandits hands. Robert Taylor and Brendan Payne fell in consecutive deliveries during the following over and United suddenly had a serious sniff of victory. Low was supported ably by Cameron Martin, who ensured the runs dried up substantially. At 6/62 in the 18th over, Ricky Shave came in and stood up. Shave would finish on 35 not out, which included a special tonk for six straight out of the coaching manual. Chris Adams also put together a handy innings of 23, with father Robert ensuring the two wicket win with the final shot of the day. The Bandits travel to Rovers this weekend, in their first two day match of the new season.

THE Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club suffered some nervy moments during their opening one day match victory over United at Kerribee Park. After restricting United to 7/129 off their allotted 30 overs, it appeared almost a formality that the home side would successfully chase down the runs. The home side made a fantastic start to their mathematical equation, which required 130 runs off 180 balls. By the 6th over, the Bandits were riding high at 1/30 – scoring at five runs per over. But just as they appeared on course, United bowler Jason Low took matters into his own

MUFC’s miracle shatters Stratford By Justin Fris
FOR the hundreds who turned out to Endeavour Park in Cairns on Saturday night for the FNQ Premier League grand final, they were treated to one of the greatest sporting miracles ever witnessed in the Far North. Trailing 2-0 in the 89th minute and seemingly lifeless on the canvas, the Mareeba United Football Club scored three goals, two in injury time, to complete an astonishing 3-2 comeback victory. It had appeared for almost the entire 90 minutes as the night would belong to Stratford, who played a beautiful blend of both physical and skilful football for lengthy periods. Wayne Srhoj was a notable omission in the Bulls’ starting line up, with coach Alex Srhoj opting to rest him as a substitute due to a troublesome hamstring. Stratford captain Shane Raso began the game like a whirlwind, setting a fantastic example for his teammates. Teaming up with Dale Goodwin, the duo began to gnaw away gradually at the Bulls defence, who struggled at times to negate several attacking waves. The Bulls were uncharacteristically struggling in the middle of the park, with no real conviction in their midfield play.
This was eventually taken advantage of by Stratford in the 18th minute, with Joe Rusch engineering a sensational counter attack. After successfully controlling a hefty clearance from Angelo Serafin, Rusch clinically passed several Bulls defenders and cooly slotted his shot past Julian Madrid in the bottom right corner of the net. Despite taking the lead, Stratford appeared content to further extend their dominance on the match, with Rusch having two excellent chances on the stroke of half time to put daylight between the teams. This dominance was solidified on 50 minutes, with the blue and whites doubling their lead. Disbelief began to spread across the Mareeba contingent who had travelled for the match. Coach Srhoj would 15 minutes later make two pivotal changes – he would bring on Wayne Srhoj and Leo Cisterni – and the impact from then on was remarkable. Off the back of a string of near misses, the Bulls finally hit the scoresheet in the 89th minute after being awarded a spot kick. Anthony Mete coolly slot his shot past Serafin – and only two minutes would pass before David Ruiz would rifle home an emphatic equaliser. Sensing their rivals had lost momentum, victory was secured in the fifth minute of injury time, with Mete completing a marauding run through a
slipshod Stratford defence – securing victory for his side. Post-match, Coach Srhoj said: “At 2-0 down (emotions) it was one of frustration. We deserved something out of the game. “I didn’t think a 2-0 scoreline – especially second half – reflected the game and I’m purely proud of the boys.” Srhoj added that Wayne Srhoj was considered extremely doubtful prior to the match, due to his hamstring injury, but he was desperate to play alongside his teammates. Stratford boss Rohan Rusch was very proud of his men despite the defeat and was heartened by their season. “I was very proud of the boys tonight,” he said. “I thought we played good football – we got 2-0 up and I was really confident we could go on with the job. “But I think after 120 minutes of football last week, it caught up with us in the end.” In the Junior final the Mareeba Bulls under 12’s played a thriller match against Edge Hill and were unlucky to go down 2-0. In the Ladies competition, Edge Hill United triumphed 4-2 on penalties against the Southside Comets, while Leichhardt recorded a 3-1 victory over MUFC in the reserves. The MUFC’s U/16’s also recorded a 1-0 grand final victory last Friday.

U/16 MUFC Bulls prevail in thrilling extra time finish A good crowd at Endeavour Park, Cairns, saw the MSF Sugar Mareeba Bulls take on minor premiers Leichhardt in the FNQ Football U/16 grand final on last Friday night. The first half was a fast but even tussle – that after a period seemed to swing Leichhardt’s way with sustained pressure on the Mareeba goal. Only excellent defensive work from the backline and a season best performance from goalkeeper Kyren Cater kept scores level at half time. In the second half, both sides had their chances to put their side in front but neither was able to put the final touch through.
An entertaining midfield battle ensued and neither side making any defensive errors resulted in a 0-0 results after 90 mins. This Mareeba side had taken every game of the finals series to extra time. Five minutes into extra time, a perfect through ball put Liam Leporati into the box where he was illegally brought down and the resulting penalty by Mateen Latif put the Bulls in front with 15 minutes still to play. Despite their best efforts, Leichhardt was not able to break through and gave away another penalty in the second period of extra time; but a brilliant save by the Lions keeper kept the final score of 1-0 to MUFC.
