Ready, set, wheelbarrow Hundreds of locals are set to converge on Byrnes Street this Friday morning for the start of the annual Great Wheelbarrow Race. And race organising committee chairman Nipper Brown (pictured) couldn’t be more chuffed, hoping to see a repeat of the whopper $243,000 raised by competitors for charities last year. “They are doing wonderful things for charity,” he said. “The feeling you get, the sense of achievement, when people reach the other end...is just unbelievable.” Turn to pages 4 and 5 for more on the 2016 Great Wheelbarrow Race.
Can you afford to die? By Michael Serenc
MAREEBA Shire ratepayers could cop an increase of more than $450 for burying their loved ones under a new set of cemetery fees and charges approved by council.
The majority of new fees and charges, which take effect at the start of the 2016/17 financial year, have been increased from the previous 2015/16 list. That includes the cost of reserving a plot of land for a free-standing mausoleum, which is now $3867, up by $452 over the previ-
ous financial year. But Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore defended the price rise, telling The Express council was running its 10 cemeteries at a loss and needed to recover costs. “We are still subsidising our cemeteries con-
siderably and we still haven’t got full cost recovery,” he said. “The cost of the provision of cemetery services is quite extraordinary, because first of all, you have to have the land, then you have to maintain it.” CONTINUED PAGE 3

Building hands for those in need Imagine one day having fully usable hands and the next day only one, or none. This is more often than not the case for hundreds of thousands of people in the developing world. There are an estimated 384,000 people with not one, but two hands missing from a landmine accident. Sadly, most are children and there are more than 120 million landmines still set around the world, with 2000 accidents a month. While Mareeba Rotary might not be able to assist with clearing landmines, they are assisting in another, life changing way – by building “Helping Hands” for people like Sowan Kumara from Sri Lanka (pictured). Late last year and early this year, Mareeba Rotary successfully ran two Helping Hands building nights. Together with school students from Mareeba and Dimbulah and community members, 20 hands were made. “The Helping Hands Program is a truly unique program where participants build prosthetic hands that are then donated to amputee landmine victims throughout the developing world,” said Mareeba Rotary president Nina Akselsen Grant. “In just a couple of hours each participant made a real and lasting contribution and in doing so reminded us what it feels like to be engaged in a truly purposeful activity to help another human being. “The Helping Hands not only change the life of an amputee, but I believe it also changes the lives of the people who build
them. “The adults and kids involved all felt a huge sense of achievement and pride when they finished building their hand. “These hands give a person the chance to once again gain employment and live a fuller life. Participants also got to decorate the hands’ cases and write personal messages to the unknown amputees. 260 hands were delivered overseas last month by a team from the Rotary Australia World Community Service Helping Hands Program. Two of the hands were fitted to Sowan Kumara from Kandy in Sri Lanka. “Sowan was an inspiration to us all, he was so keen to operate the hands and do everything at once,” Organiser Terry Daley said. “He was a Tamil Tiger soldier and he lost both hands to a landmine in 2009. “I can't begin to tell you how happy he was, he left in tears.” Mr Kumara’s wife wrote a message that was delivered back to Mareeba Rotary: “My husband wants to thank you for helping us and giving him these great hands. My life will be better as I can now do things for my family and help other people at my work. Today is a great day for me and my family. Thank you again, from Sowan.” Mr Kumara will now also have two prosthetic arms with the hands adapted to them. The second batch of hands made in Mareeba will be delivered to Cambodia in August. Road warriors rev up for good cause A TOUCH of “Mad Max” came to the Tablelands at the start of this month as a charity car rally went pedal to the metal. The Leukaemia Foundation’s 17th annual IGA Charity Car Rally had 46 cars race from Atherton to the Undara Lava Tubes on April 30 and May 1, working their way through various challenges and checkpoints along the way. The Mad Max theme certainly caused a stir amongst competitors as “Charlize's Angles”, captained by Shaz Spannenburg, took out best-dressed, while Debra Telford’s “HardFast” team won best-dressed car. A whopping $30,566 was raised for locals suffering from blood cancer, with

Cost of burying your loved ones set to rise
According to official figures, council spent about $300,000 on cemetery maintenance, grave digging, burials and associated administration costs in the last financial year. All councillors, including the mayor, voted unanimously to approve the 2016/17 fee schedule in last Wednesday’s meeting, which will be incorporated into this year’s budget to be handed down on June 15. Cr Gilmore said he could not rule out another increase in cemetery fees and charges in next year’s budget. “I can’t predict what the costs will be in the next budget, we’re still dealing with the one now,” he said. “In my heart I would love to say to people it’s free... but it can’t be. It’s just one of those costs associated with living and dying.” Burials of homeless persons, and those whose assets cannot cover the cost of a funeral, are performed by the Queensland Government under the Burials Assistance Act 1965. Burial costs, which must be paid to council upfront, can be partly absorbed by the State Government if a family or friend is unable to afford the cost of burying their loved ones.
Top 3 biggest hikes in cemetery fees and charges for 2016/17: 1. Plot reservation for free-standing Mausoleum: $3867 – increase of $452 over 2015/16 2. Grave interment (burial) for persons over nine-years-old: $1625 – increase of $193 over 2015/16 3. Interment (burial) surcharge for weekends and public holidays: $1231 – increase of $185 over 2015/16.

CAMERAS set up along the Kuranda Range to record traffic flow could be turned against motorists driving dodgy vehicles. The devices, part of Transport and Main Roads’ (TMR) “automatic number plate recognition system” (ANPR) caused a social media storm last week after motorists mistook them for speed cameras. A TMR spokeswoman said the four cameras “record traffic flow volumes and vehicle classification on the range” but was tight-lipped about their future use. “We are trialling its use in detection of incidents and delays to help improve responses,” she said. “We do not intend to use the cameras to detect and identify unregistered and uninsured vehicles at this time.” The ANPR system was part of a $3 million project announced by Barron River MP Craig Crawford in December 2015. Permanent variable message signs will also be installed as part of the project. Mareeba police refused to comment on the cameras, saying it was a matter for TMR.

Great Wheelbarrow Race Full steam ahead for foundation
Indie Rose Foundation directors: Stephen Gear, Raymond Cater, Natasha Srhoj and Tim Ralph are excited to officially launch the foundation on Saturday night.
A CHARITY dedicated to making a difference to the lives of sick children and their families will be officially launched at this year’s Great Wheelbarrow Race. The Indie Rose Foundation will help ease the financial burden on Far Northern families with children who are suffering from a medical condition that requires specialised medical treatment away from their homes. Foundation director Tim Ralph said it was fitting the charity would be launched at the very race which helped raise money for young Indie Rose Taurima, who tragically passed away from leukaemia in 2014. “When the iNDIEstructables raced for Indie, we raised nearly $250,000 for the family between 2012 and 2014,” he said. “When we realised how supportive the community had been, we thought we needed to keep this going as her legacy and that’s how the foundation was created.” Mr Ralph said Indie’s parents, Jai and Jen Taurima, were flying up specially from Canberra to attend the foundation’s launch this Saturday at the Railway Hotel in Almaden. “They were a driving force behind the foundation as well because they realised the community had given them so much that they wanted to continue to give back to other kids and families who need help.” Mr Ralph said the focus was now to help make life a little easier for other sick children and their families. “We’re here to provide financial assistance, but we’re also here to provide assistance in a way that makes things happier, so it may be a family weekend away,” he said. “We know there are a lot of sick children out there, and once its fully launched and social workers and hospitals are more aware of the foundation, we’re going to need continued support.” The Indie Rose Foundation is run by volunteer directors, meaning every dollar donated goes directly to those who need it. Team to honour legendary pioneer FOUR generations of family will come together once again at this year’s Great Wheelbarrow Race in honour of one of the region’s legendary pioneers. Prospector Henry Dixon Howe frequently travelled to Chillagoe, Herberton, Irvinebank, Gurrumbah and Stannery Hills with nothing but his trusty wheelbarrow in search of gold during the late 1800s. After honouring their famous ancestor last year, Team HDH, will line up for another crack in this year’s race with several direct descendants and family members participating. Howe’s great-grandson and Team HDH manager Craig Darveniza said he now treated the race like a family reunion. “We’ve got a few relations who are coming up from Brisbane specially,” he said.
Prospector Henry Dixon Howe with wife, Mary Jane Pittman.
“It’s a good chance to catch up with everyone. We all sit down on Saturday night at Almaden and have a big barbecue.” Keeping the family ties strong, Howe’s other greatgrandson, Lewis O’Farrell, will be cheering on the team from the support van. Howe’s grandson, Innisfail man Les Scheu, remembered his grandfather, who was born at the Mary River Goldfields, as a tireless, tough-as-nails worker with a larrikin spirit. While he is unable to compete in the entire race, Mr Scheu and Howe’s granddaughter, Jill Hoad, will be at Chillagoe to help push the team’s wheelbarrow across the finish line on Sunday. It will be a feat sure to make their famous ancestor proud.

Great Wheelbarrow Race
May 13-15
Come on down – it’s Wheelbarrow race time When it comes to the crunch at this year’s Great Wheelbarrow Race, Nipper Brown reckons there’s one thing which tops it off. “Having competed in it before, the feeling you get, the sense of achievement, when people reach the other end...is just unbelievable,” he said. “It just makes it all worthwhile.” The Mareeba Shire councillor and race organising committee chairman is hoping for another cracker turnout at this year’s event, despite nominations being down on 2015. “The 11th year we held the race we had 74 teams, last year we had 54 nominations, this year we’ve got 44 but from my point of view, that’s a really good number,” Cr Brown said. “When you get to 74 teams, you end up with so much more traffic and the logistics of running the race is more full-on. “We’ve refined a few things for the race and brought more medical staff in to make it safer for the runners.” Now in its 13th year, the race continues to inspire dozens of locals and southerners alike to embark on a gut-busting 140km run from Mareeba to Chillagoe with nothing but a wheelbarrow

to raise funds for their nominated charity. Cr Brown said he had witnessed some inspirational feats during his time on the race’s organising committee. “Michael Harnischfeger from Amaroo Medical has competed in every race since the first in 2004 and he’s in his 50s,’ he said. “My mind goes back to 2014 when young Jared Hohns competed in the solo category. From the second day, at Petford onwards, he did it really tough. “He was at school at the time and one of his classmates got out of the car and walked with him, from Petford through to Almaden. That mateship is what got Jared to the end.” Cr Brown said he was confident the race would be able to repeat last year’s effort of raising more than $240,000 for charity. “Come down to the main street in Mareeba this Friday morning and support all the teams.” “They are doing wonderful things for charity.” The Great Wheelbarrow Race street parade starts at 9am this Friday along Byrnes St, before continuing on to the official race start at Vaughan Street.

TABLELANDS leaders have given the Federal Budget a resounding thumbs down, believing it delivers little for the region. “Jobs and growth” was the catchcry of Treasurer Scott Morrison’s 2016/17 Budget, but it was difficult to find much to cheer about. The $5 billion Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF), announced in last year’s budget, has now been joined by a $2 billion National Water Infrastructure Loan Facility (NWLIF), which provides concessional loans to co-fund the construction of water infrastructure projects. As with the NAIF, the NWILF was also flagged in the 2015 Northern Australia White Paper, but the budget has now given it a dollar value. Kennedy MP Bob Katter slammed the budget, saying it was all talk and no action. “North Queensland has been wiped like a dirty rag,” he said. “We haven’t got one dollar of either of those funds to build anything.” But LNP candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto said the loan money was there for the taking, if the right projects and investors could be secured. “There’s plenty of opportunities in the North for infrastructure,” he said. “We’ve had money on the table like we’ve never had. Until we have someone in the government, we will continue to miss out on these opportunities.” Mr Pavetto said he would be fighting for funding to seal the Hann Highway, which is estimated to cost about $120 million. As it stands, only $100 million is available through the Northern Australia Beef Roads Fund, announced by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in May last year. The fund makes targeted upgrades to key roads necessary for transporting cattle, but pales in comparison with Victoria’s $345 million Rural and Regional Roads package slated in the Budget. “There’s a lot of different cost estimates for the Hann Highway, it depends on who builds it,” Mr Pavetto said.
“There’s got to be some emphasis on it from the State Government as well...I’ll be doing whatever I can to make sure the Hann Highway gets funded.” Mr Katter said he wouldn’t be surprised if funding for the highway was announced in the lead up to the Federal election on July 2. “It will just be a politician’s pre-election promise,” he said. “That’s all we’re going to get and that’s not worth two bob.” Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro was supportive of the Budget’s company tax cut from 30 per cent to 27.5 per cent for businesses with a turnover of less than $10 million a year. “Overall, from a business point of view, it’s a good result,” he said. “It will be welcomed by most of the businesses in the Mareeba area.” But he was less optimistic about the NWLIF and its potential to be used in building the proposed $586 million Nullinga Dam, which would mostly benefit Cairns. “We should really have a good look at the business case, which needs to be developed,” Mr Moro said. “Our view is there needs to be further study and a look at other options which would be more beneficial to increasing water security for the Mareeba area and surrounds.” Mr Moro was also concerned about the government’s expected delay of the proposed backpacker tax for another six months, creating further uncertainty for local farmers. Darylmple MP Shane Knuth said the budget was lacklustre and questioned whether it was fair to give a tax cut to small business owners rather than “working-class battlers” in his electorate. “A tax cut is a good thing for small business, but it is the working-class battlers who support small business by spending their money,” he said. “A tax break to the battlers would have increased spending in our region.” Cook MP Billy Gordon to do not respond to a request for comment.

June deadline for council budget Mareeba Shire Council's Budget for 2016-2017 is set to be handed down in June. Cost recovery is the focus of this year’s budget, but council claims the majority of cases have simply undergone a CPI increase. “There are still council workshops to
complete final detail before the budget is handed down next month," Mayor Tom Gilmore said. "Costs for services are reviewed annually, with a cost recovery model applied wherever possible; however there are certain areas where this is discounted."

A GROUP of brave Mareeba State High School students and teachers have gone hairless for a good cause. Amid hundreds of their cheering peers, the looks of pain and embarrassment were hard to miss as a willing few shaved their hair or waxed their legs to raise a whopping $3195 for the Indie Rose Foundation last Wednesday. “It feels good to support such a great cause, the beaut thing is the way the kids react to it,” said newly-bald school principal Scott Whybird. “It brings a bit of a human side to what happens at school, and as a principal, it’s good to put myself out there and for our community to see our fun side.” Treating himself to a neat leg wax, there wasn’t much hope for School Vice-Captain Brett Girgenti as he writhed in agony. “This is not fun,” he quipped as another clump of hair came off his leg. battle with Leukaemia in 2014. It has since gone on to inspire hundreds in the Mareeba community, culminating in this weekend’s official launch of the foundation. That includes young Clayre Girgenti, 13, who took it upon herself to raise $1325 for the event, aptly named “Hair Free for Indie”. “I was there when Indie died, and even though I wasn’t close to the family, I just saw how it pulled everyone together and it was really inspirational,” she said. “I had my whole family here today which is really nice and all my friends have been so amazing, better than anyone could ask for.” Event organiser and teacher Tim Ralph praised the school community for their whole-hearted support. “We always get a good turnout, lots of kids and staff come to support it,” he said. “It’s become a tradition at the school so they’re going to do it every year now.”

With interest rates falling and the coastal property market set to rise again, is this a good time to buy in the regions? Outer-lying regions from Cairns are still affordable. Areas like Mareeba in developments like Wylandra Estate are a case in point. $77 per week – that’s the relatively small difference between buying and renting in a development like Wylandra Estate. Home buyers might be surprised to learn how small the gap between paying rent and purchasing in Wylandra Estate is. By making a few minor lifestyle changes – like making coffee and taking lunch to work – buyers could be stepping into a new home faster than they think. History has shown that property generally appreciates faster than the average person can save to increase their deposit. For example – a $500,000 house appreciating at five per cent per annum will increase your equity by $25,000 in the first year. That’s significantly more than most people can save during the same period. House price – $500,000 Weekly mortgage – $577^ Weekly rent – $500 ^ Based on a current standard variable mortgage over 30 years.
With great volcanic soils and a high water table in the underground acquifer Wylandra Estate is the best land on offer. Talk turkey on our house and land package. We will do a better than listed price* when you contact us directly (via phone, Facebook, our website or email). This is a real estate opportunity. With interest rates falling you will save on the house and any repayments. Act now because the offer expires on June 10, 2016. Farmers check out the new herbicide sprayer.
New sprayer zones in on crops A NEW-LOOK herbicide sprayer will give cane farmers better accuracy while being eco-friendly. The Queensland Government-developed “Dual Herbicide Sprayer” has been used on more than 11,000 hectares of crops, reducing the use of herbicide ingredient Diuron by more than six tonnes. “This is 6681 kilograms less our northern industry needs to purchase, and a significant reduction in the flowon to downstream areas,” said Department of Agriculture

The new seating at Eacham Memorial Park.
SEVERAL Tablelands community clubs have pitched in to deliver seating at Eacham Memorial Park. Three park benches were donated by Malanda RSL sub-branch, Eacham Seniors Club, Malanda Bowls Club and Malanda Rugby League Club. The Australian-made benches were constructed using recycled plastic bottles. “The members of our local RSL, seniors club, bowls club and rugby league club have worked together to deliver this project which is a great example of the contri-
butions our community groups deliver for our towns,” said Councillor Anthony Ball. “Also, credit to our hardworking outdoor staff for their efforts.” Tablelands Regional Council parks and gardens staff installed the seating in time for the Anzac Day services at the Eacham Memorial Gates. One of the park benches is dedicated to the memory of long-term Malanda Lions Club member Jeff Airey.

AGRICULTRAL plastic waste dumped in Mareeba will soon be able to be recycled after a southern company offered to help. Mareeba Shire council has approved a proposal by Capalaba-based Recycling Design and Technologies (RDT) to collect plastic waste from the Mareeba Transfer Station. The waste includes plastic fluming, netting, containers, film and bumper bars but at this stage will not include plastic mulch cover due to the high level of organic contamination. Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore said the proposal, at no cost to council, would help clear a large volume of waste which otherwise couldn’t be recycled in the town. “We say to our farmers: deliver it to the transfer station and these people will come up, bale it on site and take it away,” he said. “There’s no money in, no money out. Story-telling with a difference
TABLELANDS libraries are urging parents and children to join in the fun at a reading event like no other. To be held on May 25, National Simultaneous Storytime will kick off at 11am when librarians across the region read aloud I Got This Hat by Kate and Jol Temple. Councillor Katrina Spies will read I Got This Hat at the Atherton Library while Councillor Kate Eden will read the story at Herberton Library later at 2pm. “With seven libraries conveniently located across the Tablelands region, there is no excuse about not having access to free resources to help instil a love of reading,” said Mayor Joe Paronella. “It would be great to see a strong show of support with young children at our libraries on May 25 for this storytelling session.” Weekly storytelling sessions are held at 10.30am at the Atherton and Malanda Libraries each Wednesday, Herberton and Ravenshoe Libraries each Thursday and a “Rhyme Time” session at Yungaburra Library at 10am every second Tuesday.
just providing the space.” But Cr Gilmore said plastic mulch cover was an ongoing concern for council, as increasing amounts of it were left to landfill. While RDT is not currently recycling the material, the company is currently undergoing trials to determine the costs involved of recycling it. “The problem with plastic mulch is not the plastic itself, but the contamination. When they pull it up, it has an awful lot of vegetative material and dirt in it,” Cr Gilmore said. “You don’t want recyclable material going to landfill where you can avoid it.” Mareeba councillor and transfer station gatehouse operator Nipper Brown said he was “extremely happy” with RDT’s offer. “It’s better for the environment and saves us putting a lot of stuff into landfill,” he said.
Paramedics to sedate violent patients Paramedics will be able to chemically sedate agitated and violent patients after the State Government adopted all recommendations from a new report. Chemical sedation and tactical deescalation training were among the last of 15 recommendations delivered in the Paramedic Safety Taskforce Final Report. “A situation where 3300 paramedics, nurses, doctors and hospital staff are being assaulted or verbally abused each year is something we cannot accept as a society,” said Ambulance Services minister Cameron Dick. “It also delivers a revised tactical de-escalation and safety program – which is basically a self-defence
Kelly book to raise eyebrows A NEW historical book promises to turn the story of famous bushranger Ned Kelly on its head. To be launched next week, Ned Knight in Aussie Armour features a collection of generational revelations from insider sympathiser families, now resident throughout Australia, who played a role in the Kelly saga.

program.” Queensland Ambulance Service Deputy Commissioner Dee TaylorDutton said new clinical practice procedures would allow paramedics to administer the antipsychotic drug Droperidol to patients in situations with a high risk of violence. “The introduction of chemical sedation will allow a safer approach to the assessment of violent patients and help minimise the risk of hostile responses to treatment,” she said. Mr Dick said the ambulance service would also investigate the potential for new technology to help enhance paramedic safety.
Cairns journalist and author Eugenie Navarre has spent more than a decade documenting several grassroots stories, including shock new revelations about the life of Kelly. Ned - Knight in Aussie Armour will be launched by Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella at the Atherton Library on Tuesday May 17, at 10.30am.
SpottIng tHe SIgnS oF mental IllneSS Feeling a bit down or a little anxious is common. Our lives are often busy, stressful and complex. It’s not unreasonable that we would struggle sometimes. During these times we might just need to curl up with a movie or loved one or take a long quiet walk to refresh and recharge. Sometimes we can’t shake off the awful feelings no matter how hard we try. The heaviness in the gut or the racing heartbeat just won’t settle. That’s why 1 in 6 people will experience depression at some stage in their lives, while 25% of us will suffer with serious anxiety. In fact, often the two go hand in hand. The third film in The Divergent Series – ALLEGIANT comes to The Rising Sun Cinema screen this week, whilst MOTHER'S DAY starts its main run after successful previews on Mother's Day. Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Jason Sudeikis and Kate Hudson star in an excellent comedy MOTHER'S DAY. Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson continue in one of the biggest movies of the year. CAPTAIN AMERICA - CIVIL WAR. This is your last chance to see this all action adrenalin pumping epic on the Mareeba big screen.
MOTHER'S DAY
OPEN 7 DAYS FROM 10AM
all original st
Interesting and often funny intersecting stories – when Moms collide on Mother's day. Sandy (Jennifer Aniston) is a stressed-out, single mom who learns that her ex-husband is marrying a younger woman. Her friend Jesse (Kate Hudson) is a fitness freak who doesn't tell her parents that she has a family. Bradley is a widower (Jason Sudeikis) who's trying to raise two daughters on his own, while Miranda (Julia Roberts) is too busy with her career to worry about having children. When their respective problems start coming to a head, the Mother's Day holiday takes on a special meaning.
ALLEGIANT (The Divergent Series)
After the earth-shattering revelations of Insurgent , Tris (Shailene Woodley) must escape with Four (Theo James) and go beyond the wall enclosing Chicago. For the first time ever, they will leave the only city and family they have ever known. Once outside, old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless with the revelation of shocking new truths. Tris and Four must quickly decide who they can trust as a ruth-
less battle ignites beyond the walls of Chicago which threatens all of humanity. In order to survive, Tris will be forced to make impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love. Review by Todd Smith Allegiant, the third in the series of this dystopian young adult fantasy, was certainly an improvement from its predecessors, thanks to stronger direction, improved editing and better acting from its young cast, notably Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort and Theo James. It was entertaining, but lacked a compelling narrative arc that keeps the audience engaged and drawn to the finale. Here's hoping that the last will be the best.

Method 1. Line a 9 x 9 baking tray with parchment paper/cookie sheet and set aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the crushed peanut butter cookies, rice bubbles, flour, gluten, oats and mix very well. Set aside. 3. In a microwave safe bowl, melt the peanut butter. Pour the peanut butter over the dry mixture and mix very well until fully incorporated. 4. If the mixture is crumbly, using a tablespoon at a time, add the milk of choice until a firm batter is formed. Once it is, pour batter in the lined baking tray. Set aside to cool (you can put it in the freezer if you wish) 5. Melt the peanut butter chips and top the peanut butter fudge base completely. Refrigerate or freeze immediately until firm. Once firm, cut into bars and enjoy!

Mareeba Bulls – Bessell Cup champions
Under 6 junior Bulls at training in their new shirts: Nash Liaver, Milla Allen, Kenzo Tyler and Quaide Gostelow.
Professional look to junior training A SEA of orange and black has taken over the Mareeba Bulls juniors who are set to roar with their new look training shirts. Last week every junior player at Mareeba United Football Club received their very own training shirt, thanks to support from local businesses. “It’s all part of the club’s goal to create a united and professional approach, not only within the club, but to the whole community,” said Mareeba United Football Club Junior president Jodi Allen. “We want all the players, from juniors to seniors, to feel like they are part of the one club. “They were all so excited to re-
ceive their training shirts and it’s great to see the kids at training in the same uniform. “Training is vital preparation for game day and with these new shirts the kids feel quite special and know they belong to a club. “Hendle’s Sandblasting and Gostelow Limes have come on board as sponsors of the training shirts for the next two years. “Without the support we receive from local businesses things like this would not be possible.” Mareeba United Football Club has 140 players in junior grades from Squirts to Under 14’s.
Bessell Cup champions – the Mareeba Bulls combined Under 13/14 team.
The future of the Mareeba United Football Club looks strong after a combined under 13/14 boys and girls team returned home champions of the 40th annual Bessell Cup. Held in Ayr over the May Day long weekend, the two day football tournament was attended by teams from all over North Queensland. The team made it straight through to the Sunday afternoon grand final after playing five matches undefeated. They faced the NQ Brolgas (Townsville) representative team in the final and after a tightly contested match walked away cup champions, winning 3-2. The young team had the lead though the whole match with the final winning goal hitting the back of the net in the 50th minute. Coach Luch Avolio was ecstatic and proud of his team
after the grand final. “They played out of their skin the whole tournament,” Avolio said. “The Mareeba side was the only club based team, all the other teams were representative sides, so to walk away champions was just amazing. “They played the best of best in North Queensland and they deserved to win. “As a team they only had two training sessions together before the tournament, but if you saw them play you would think they played together every week. “They just gelled and played great together. “The Mareeba Bulls spirit came through.” Mareeba goalkeeper Josh Leporati stared throughout the entire tournament and walked away with an extra trophy after being named Goalkeeper of the Bessell Cup.
Atherton triumph in bowls pennants Atherton have claimed the champions title in the 2016 ‘Atherton Tablelands Bowls Pennants”. The event was held at the Atherton Bowls Club last weekend, where the locals took full advantage of the home green winning all four games. Weipa were once again runners-up, with Mareeba, after a strong finish, fading to be third. Both Weipa and Mareeba finished with two wins, but Weipa had the better
average. Teams from Mossman and Yungaburra also competed. That was first time Atherton has won the title for many years. Members of the club were not actually sure when the last title was won. Division 2 Pennants, held in Cooktown, was won by Cooktown. Atherton will now play the winner of the FNQ Pennants for the right to represent the TFNQDBA District in the zone finals later this year.

Red Devils win thriller THE Highlight of last weeks Mareeba Basketball fixtures was a thrilling 4342 win by the ‘Red Devils’ over ‘Ciggy Butts’, in the mens competition. The encounter provided an excellent display of Basketball by both sides and was one of this seasons best games. Ciggy Butts held a handy 25-18 half time lead, but the Red Devils experienced players Andy Harris and Clinton Camerson, spear headed their comeback after a long break. However Ciggy Butts showed that the championship title is not beyond them, with Fabio Nocella and Warren Thompson both playing strongly. Ciggy Butts competed with Red Devils throughout the last quarter, only going down by a single point.
In earlier mens games, Comets recorded an important 41-33 victory over Young Gs. The other mens fixture between Stingrays and The Express was also closely contested, with The Express narrow winners by 26-24. Junior fixtures on Thursday afternoon and Friday also provided tremendous entertainment. Throughout the various junior grades Mareeba Basketball Association are fortunate to have a good number of talented young players. Orange Tops under 18 side scored a 48-41 win over Pumas in a keenly contested clash. Scoring well for their respective sides were Jeremy McKay (13 points) for Orange Tops and Toby Kerswell (17 points) for Pumas.

Gators claim first points in local derby

Roosters Saul Lealaitatea crossed for two tries.
By their own admission it wasn’t pretty, but the Mareeba Gladiators scored a valuable 30-26 win over the Atherton Roosters on Saturday night. The Gladiators claimed first points in this years Tableland Cup in an old fashion local derby supported by a packed house at Roosters Stadium. Only goal kicking separated the two sides in the physical encounter. After leading 18-4 at halftime, the Gladiators did well to hold off a fast finishing Roosters outfit for a crucial win. Mareeba coach Josh Stowers said, it was an awesome night for local rugby league and he was very happy with the effort from his team. “As expected it was a tough one in front of a big crowd and a much needed win for us,” Stowers said.
“I thought Sonny Ray, Clint Posselt, Ian King and Kurt Jackson were strong for us in a bruising 80 minutes”. For the Roosters, it was a night full of mistakes and ended their 2016 unbeaten run. Contributing to Mareeba’s 30 was – Sonny Ray (2), Azariah Gutchen (1), Shihan Aue (1), Josh Stowers (1) and Jason Bail (4 goals). While Roosters try scorers were – Saul Lealaitatea (2), Jacob Rivett (1), Tomoli Nawaibalavu (1), Michael Hauraki and Darryl Grant (3 goals). The Roosters won the under 18 match 36-22 and also took the reserve grade honours over Mareeba, 34-20. This Saturday Mareeba host Innisfail, while the Roosters play Ivanhoes on Friday night at Smithfield.
The Mareeba Bulls have walked away with a near clean sweep after picking up four division wins from a possible five last weekend. The Bulls’ men’s premier, youth, second division and reserve teams all came away with the win, while the premier ladies ground out a tough draw at Innisfail’s Steve Corica Oval. But the main show in Innisfail was the premier’s clash, which had the crowd on the edge of their seats for the entire 90 minutes on Saturday night. The Bulls looked the goods early and dominated proceedings for most of the first half, but where unable to find a way past the Cutters' superb defense. The hosts were awarded a dubious free kick on the edge of the box right on half time, and it was former North Queensland Fury payer Lorenzo Sipi, who stepped up to send a rocket into the bottom corner of the net, giving his side a shock 1-0 lead at the break. The second half started as the first half finished, with the Cutters awarded another free kick on the edge of

the penalty area. They promptly converted it with a neat curling ball to go 2-0 up as the Bulls started to look in trouble. However, a spirited fightback by Mareeba saw Robert Pendenza and Paul Ruiz level the scores at 2-2. But the Bulls dug themselves into another hole when a clumsy Nicholas Tallarico challenge in the penalty area gave Innisfail a 3-2 lead with just 20 minutes to go. It would be former A-League midfielder Wayne Srhoj who came to Mareeba’s rescue, slotting the ball home to make it 3-all before Paul Ruiz scored his second goal of the night with a penalty kick on the 85th minute to close out the match 4-3. The win is the orange and black’s second on the trot, with coach Alex Srhoj full of praise for the reigning FNQ Football champions. “We showed again why we are champions,” he said. “We are not the best side in the league for no reason, we never give up, we never say never and we find a way to win, and tonight it was great to see the boys dig deep and get through it.”
Srhoj said Mareeba proved they were the better team on the night though the way in which they fought back from 2-0 down. “Whether you win by one goal or 10, three points is three points, and that’s the main focus, but we played some good football, and over all I think we deserved to win,” he said. Meanwhile, the Bulls’ reserves came away with an impressive 8-2 drubbing of the Cutters earlier that day, striker Damian Wildman bagging four goals himself. It was Wildman’s second fourgoal haul of the weekend, after scoring four the night before in Mareeba’s second division 6-0 thumping of Edge Hill. The club’s youth team also look to be finding their feet, working hard to come back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 against last year against Innisfail, who were last year’s grand finalists. And the premier ladies put the competition on notice with a 1-1 draw against the Cutters. Playing with their trademark fighting spirit and character, the team played some fantastic football and could have nabbed a win with a little more luck.
Full weekend of rodeo action and racing thrills Thrills and spills combined to create non-stop action and fun at the annual Mt Garnet Races and Rodeo held over the May Day long weekend. Organisers have hailed the 2016 event ‘one of the biggest and best ever’ with massive crowds flocking to the three day event. This year saw the iconic event return to a combined races and rodeo weekend – which organisers have attributed to the attendance. Clare Cupitt, secretary of the Mt Garnet Amateur Turf Club, said it was the biggest race crowds since the grass-fed racing days. “We were very happy with the turnout at the Saturday races, it was the biggest ever,” she said. The day featured seven races with more than 50 nominations from across the region. Off track, the fashion stakes were high. With a floral theme for the day, men, women and children of all ages showed up in their bright and fabulous creations. “We had the highest nominations ever in this year’s fashions on the field event,” Ms Cupitt said. “It was so great to see so many dressed up – from the kids to the adults. “Having everything back to the one weekend meant it was successful for all – the spirit and atmosphere was just amazing.” Sunday saw a full day of rodeo
action at its best with just under 300 nominations over the full rodeo program. Like Ms Cupitt, Kylie Rankine, secretary of Mt Garnet Rodeo Association, said the event was amazing with an atmosphere to match. “It was just fantastic,” she said. “Comments from spectators was that it ‘just feels right this year. “We had both local and interstate competitors, as well as spectators from overseas. “People came for all over and a huge thanks must go to all competitors for putting on a fantastic show.” The Sunday rodeo also featured a trade show with more than 20 exhibitors down show lane. “There was everything from kids toys to clothes, a jumping castle and more,” Ms Rankine said. “The trade show gives the event a mini show feel and a boost for local businesses. “ Mr Rankine said both committees had worked closely this year to bring the whole event together which resulted in a successful weekend for all involved. Both committees thanked all sponsors and volunteers and the support from all who attended – without which there would be no event.
