Mareeba Shire Council workers go on strike over pay and conditions
EXPOSED: TRC’s second rates blunder TRC admits another error made with rates as finance manager resigns FULL STORY P5 By Rebecca Wallis
Another embarrassing blunder by Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has come to light, proving a second stuff up with this year’s rates that could mean thousands of rate payers have been incorrectly charged. A small group of ratepayers raised the issue with council last October in conjunction with the category F and G debacle that saw the council admit wrong doing and offer a concession to those affected. Steve Raso, Sandra
Curcio and Ed Kochi noticed there was also an error with the Minimum General rate (MGR) in the 2017/2018 rates schedule. TRC announced a four per cent increase to the MGR in last year’s budget, but when rates notices were issued in September 2017 the TRC finance department had actually reduced the MGR by four per cent. The group says the number of people affected is likely to be ‘substantial’. “Anyone can see it for themselves in black
and white if they compare the 2017/2018 rates schedule to the 2016/2017 schedule,” said Mr Raso . “This error runs right through the entire rates schedule across every category. The cents in the dollar rate is correct, but the Minimum General rate is four per cent less than 2016/2017.” After bringing the error to council’s attention last October, it was not until nearly five months later on Thursday, February 15 that the trio were continued P5

Koah man’s flight application withdrawn
By Rebecca Wallis
One man’s dream to fly instead of drive to work from Koah to Cairns has been delayed temporarily after an application to increase the number of flights was withdrawn from the council meeting agenda last week. Pat English applied to Mareeba Shire Council to increase the number of flights made from his Koah property from 52 a year up
to 365 a year, averaging one a day, with the ability to fly six times a day. Despite staunch opposition from a section of the nearby community, officers were recommending that the request be approved, with conditions, but Mr English withdrew the application before councillors could make a decision. 182 submissions were received by council, of which 169 objected to the proposed development, while 13 were in support.
“It is really noisy because we are in the straight line of this runway – it is 97 decibels when it comes over us. That is like standing next to a jackhammer,” said Nadine O’Brien who was one of the objectors. “He had an approval with conditions but he hasn’t adhered to it, despite us complaining for years to council.” Mayor Tom Gilmore stepped outside of the council meeting to engage with objectors and listen to
their concerns, before explaining that a submission must be assessed independently of complaints made against the applicant. He said he empathised with the residents but that he had to assess the application based on the rules. “It’s one of those things where people get emotional, of course they do, no question,” he said. “They get upset for good reason or bad. And I’m not to judge that. But I have to stay within the
bounds of my job and so do my councillors. “As for him breaching conditions, that’s another matter altogether. They’re very separate boxes.” Julie Brunt neighbours Mr English’s runway and said she is ‘disappointed’ with the way the council have dealt with the issue. “It’s a false premise they’re operating under,” she said. “I’m very disappointed that council is operating in that way. I expect better from the council
staff and I expect better of the whole council. This is a democracy and we need to operate that way.” Ms Brunt alleged there was a conflict of interest between councillors and Mr English claiming there were friendships that would muddy decisions – an allegation Cr Gilmore strongly denied. Cr Gilmore said he did not know when the application would be presented again but said that it would be assessed fairly.

Ross Johnson, Pompey Pezzelato, Alan Poggioli and Neal Rockley are all taking part in this year’s Variety Queensland’s 2018 Car Rally.
‘Kairi Boys’ gear up for charity outback car rally What happens when three Kairi farmers and one prominent businessman from the Tablelands get around a table at the end of another busy year? You get a great laugh and a load of heckling and hacking on each other, but you wouldn’t expect to hear a decision like ‘Let’s get a team together and do a car rally’ to be set in stone. But that’s exactly what happened. Something that may be on many a bucket list around our country is be-
coming a reality for Kairi farmers Ross Johnson, Pompey Pezzelato, Alan Poggioli and local business operator Neal Rockley. They are making a dream come true and have formed ‘The Kairi Boys’ as part of Variety Queensland’s 2018 Car Rally which will kick off from Gladstone in August this year. The ‘Variety Bash’, as it is affectionately known, is definitely not a competitive car race as such. Although a lot of high

jinx, practical jokers and good spirits are part and parcel, the teams travel in ‘rally style’ across Queensland on route to many isolated outback towns, bringing their good spirits with them as well as much needed funds for sick and disadvantaged children. Sitting down and having a chat with any of these ‘boys’ will put a smile on your face. Four popular fellas on a mission together to “put Kairi and the Atherton Tablelands on the map and bring a bit of cheer to
the bush” are sure to have some laughs along the way. In fact, everything about ‘The Kairi Boys’ is extremely positive and quite a bit sentimental. Ross Johnson explains that, ‘The Kairi Boys’ is an old team name from the past; it was the original, and unbeatable, tug-o-war team from Kairi. As a third generation farmer in the region Ross speaks proudly and explains that even the team’s colours will continue on like the original ‘Kairi
Boys’ and of course, match the local Kairi State School colours of black and gold. “We’ll be visiting tiny towns along the way just as small as Kairi, and we know how much heart small towns have and what it means for them when a ‘Bash’ rolls through,” he said. The crew will be gearing up over the next few months as they put together their “1984 V8 Holden Statesman Deville” and get her ‘rally ready’. You may be lucky enough to spot her
around town as she makes the transformation! Many of us often see rally cars passing through the Tablelands region but this one will be here to stay. For more information visit ‘The Kairi Boys’ Facebook page for the links to donate to “Variety, the Children’s Charity” where 100 per cent of all donations will help disadvantaged children. Mareeba council workers go on strike Mareeba Shire Council workers went on a one day strike last Thursday, February 22 over pay and work conditions.
By Rebecca Wallis
Around 60 Mareeba Shire Council workers went on strike last Thursday after talks with CEO Peter Franks broke down over pay and work conditions. The nonessential services workers came together outside the Mareeba Shire Council offices to protest over unfair treatment claiming they are underpaid in comparison to other council workers doing similar jobs. “We’re not asking for much more, we don’t want to cripple the council,” said CFMEU Union organiser Rolly Cummings. “But we don’t feel that
their offer of a 2.5 per cent increase for us is acceptable.” The workers claimed that Mr Franks had received a 10 per cent pay increase in the past six months which was refuted by council officials. Mr Franks also said in a statement that council employees receive above award wages and conditions. “Council commenced negotiations regarding the Mareeba Shire Council Certified Agreement and tabled a final offer in late 2017 which was rejected by the combined unions,” he said. “A group of staff elected to conduct a one day strike
and council recognises their right to take protected industrial action.” Mr Franks said that the council appreciates its staff and “as a measure of good faith retrospectively implemented the wage increase tabled in council’s final offer”, believed to be a 2.5 per cent wage increase. But the workers were not happy with the offer and claim they are paid less than other workers doing similar work for similar sized council’s around Queensland. “Expecting people of this community as rate payers to try and live off those wages is absolutely ridiculous, when the CEO is on a very tidy six figure sum in
line with CEOs in Townsville City Council and Cairns Council,” said Jim White from the Plumbers Union, North Qld organiser of Fixed Industries. “All we’re asking for is 3.5 per cent and a counter offer for the workers of Mareeba Shire Council.” The workers were also claiming there is no job security for them, a claim Mr Franks again denied. “All positions are permanent, unless special circumstances apply (eg. apprentice positions, grant funded positions)” he said. “Since amalgamation, only one position has been replaced by a contracted service and this resulted in a saving of over $50,000
a year. When any position becomes vacant, council reviews the position and determines whether or not the role is still critical and required.” Mr Franks said costs are kept as low as possible to allow for reduced rates for home owners in the shire. “Council has reduced the number of staff since de-amalgamation in an effort to reduce costs and hence limit rate increases for the community,” he said. “Council has no plans to outsource positions and has made this clear to staff on numerous occasions.” A council spokesperson said Mr Franks would not be sitting down to negotiate further with the workers.
Telstra bill scam warning
Rosemary Blundell.
A Mareeba grandmother wants to warn others of a phone bill scam that almost had her paying for a Telstra account she doesn’t have. Rosemary Blundell received a bill in the mail that looked exactly like your average Telstra letter and thought nothing suspicious of it, except that her home phone is with Optus.
After calling Telstra to find out why the bill was sent to her, she was informed it was a scam and that no such account existed. “They told me to just throw it in the bin,” said Mrs Blundell. “But I thought no I want to warn others because although younger people
might be aware of things like this, a lot of elderly people and a lot of Italian people around here wouldn’t know it was a scam.” Mrs Blundell took the fake bill to Mareeba police who passed it on to Mareeba Senior Constable Megan O’Brien. “I brought this up at
our Neighbourhood Watch meeting to let people know that these scammers are starting to target more recognisable businesses now, like Telstra,” she said. “I have advised anyone who has suspicions like this to contact Scam Watch via www.scamwatch.gov. au or by calling 1300 795 995.”
THE family of missing 19-year-old Mareeba woman Sarah Buckingham, also known as Sarah Booth, made an emotional plea for her to get in touch last week. Sarah was last seen leaving home in Mareeba on Sunday, February 18 before visiting her grandmother. Her car was found abandoned in Rockhampton. She was last seen
wearing a skirt and pink shirt with white writing on it. Police and family are concerned for her welfare as this behaviour is very out of character. A Facebook page Help Find Sarah Buckingham – AKA sarah BOOTH has been set up to try and find any information that leads to her whereabouts. Anyone with info can call Police Link on 131444.

Lakeland solar project complete Construction of Australia’s first co-located large-scale solar and battery project to be connected to the electricity grid is now complete. Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the project would provide reliable power to more than 3,000 households living on the grid’s fringe in Cape York. “This is fantastic news for communities in Cape York. There is no reason why they should not have access to reliable power simply because of their location,” Mr Entsch said. “The government, through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency,
provided more than $17 million to the $42.5 million Lakeland Solar and Storage Project, located near one of the most remote National Electricity Market substations in Australia. “The 10.8 MW solar photovoltaic plant and 1.4 MW/5.3MWh lithium-ion battery will demonstrate providing energy to the local regional community autonomously for several hours” Federal Environment and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg said the government was committed to delivering affordable and reliable power for all Australians.
Dedication recognised Carmelina Niceforo, otherwise known as Millie, is well-known locally for her involvement and dedication to entertainment across the Tablelands. Last week that dedication was recognised with an Australia Day award that she was unable to accept on January 25 as she was supporting her daughter Albina at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Instead Millie was presented with the Senior Arts and Cultural Award at the Mareeba Shire Council meeting on Wednesday, February 21. “Millie made an out-
standing contribution to the community over many years,” said Mayor Tom Gilmore. “She has assisted with Mareeba’s Carols in the Park as a performer, musician and conductor. “She has supported the Mareeba Multicultural Festival since its inception and participates in other community events including Christmas in July, Seniors Week and regular events at the Garden Settlement. “Millie initiated a monthly talent time to give local artists the opportunity to perform.”
Clamp-down on pet rego
MAREEBA Shire Council last week approved a shire-wide animal inspection doorknock with an initial focus on the Mareeba township. Mayor Tom Gilmore said it was wonderful to see pet owners being responsible. “The program proved to be successful with a number of residents registering their dogs and property enclosures being inspected to ensure safety and compliance,” he said. The selective inspection program aims to ensure that the owners of dogs comply with the registration requirements under the Animal Management Act (Dogs and Cats) 2008. The purpose of the program is also to ensure that owners comply with their duty to provide a proper enclosure
to prevent the animal from wandering as per Council’s Local Law (Animal Management) 2011. Councillor Gilmore is strongly urging residents to ensure their dogs are registered with Council andcomply with regulations. “There are serious fines for dogs that are roaming at large, and if they’re unregistered of course there are even more serious consequences,” he said. The program will commence 1 April and will run for three months. It will operate between the hours of 6.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Sunday, with the majority of inspections to be carried out during normal working hours. While the program is Shire-wide, the focus will be on the Mareeba township

TRC investigating error with rates
From P1
granted a meeting with the mayor, councillors, CEO and relevant officers where they allegedly admitted wrong doing and promised a “full and independent review”. By Monday morning the Finance Officer had resigned from her job reportedly for personal reasons and TRC had released a statement claiming that they were aware of the anomaly but that it had zero budget impact and would be addressed prior to the adoption of the 2018/19 budget in June. “This is a disaster of epic proportions,” said Mr Raso. “These additional errors are nothing short of a fiasco and expose total incompetence within the council’s finance department. “How they never noticed these mistakes is beyond us. This should never have happened and could have been easily avoided if
someone had compared the rates schedule to the year before.” Mr Raso said the categories most affected were A, B and M which contain the vast majority of rateable properties. The group say this error has resulted in some property owners with a lower valued property actually paying higher rates than owners of a higher valued property. “If you own a property valued at $84,000, your general rate is $1223, but if your property is worth one dollar more at $84,001 your general rate is $1129,” he said. “That is $94 less than the lower valued property. It’s madness.” Ms Curcio said the group were glad council had finally agreed to meet with them to discuss the matter but said she felt that mayor Joe Paronella was “still unwilling to be forthright with the public.” “This is a serious matter and is of significant public
importance,” she said. “We want to ensure that ratepayers are made fully aware of the errors, the extent of their effect and how they will be corrected by council.” Ms Curcio said they had sat on the information for five months and decided not to release it publicly in the hope that TRC would step forward and do the right thing. “It has taken ratepayers months of begging and pleading to get council to discuss these errors,” she said. “Finally, they have admitted that at least part of the rates schedule was in error. A small part of it was apparently intentional, although we found their reasoning for that to be implausible.” Although there were no concrete outcomes from the meeting, the three ratepayers were heartened to hear that TRC would undertake a full and independent review to determine the full extent of the errors and to
Nominations open for new councillor By Rebecca Wallis
Southern Tablelanders are going to the polls on March 17 after a by-election was announced last week to find a replacement for Division 6 Tablelands Regional councillor Bronwyn Voyce who resigned her post in January. Nominations for the position close on Tuesday, February 27 and one man putting his hand up for the job is born and bred local Owen Byrnes. The son of late exAtherton councillor Keith Byrnes whose cousin Ray Byrnes was also the mayor of Eacham Shire, 53-yearold Mr Byrnes certainly has the credentials for the job. Straight-talking and passionate about the community, Mr Byrnes says some locals have lost faith in their council and he wishes to be a part of restoring that. “I am very concerned about the direction things are going in right now,” said Mr Byrnes who lives at Tinaroo but grew up in Kairi. “I wouldn’t be applying if I didn’t think I could make a difference and if people like me don’t step up and take our knowledge and expertise and use
it to steer the ship in the right direction then you’re not going to achieve improvement.” Married with three grown-up children and two grand-children, Mr Byrnes said he is ready to reduce the work load of his business and step up into one of the toughest jobs going right now. Mr Byrnes’ ancestors first arrived on the Tablelands 130 years ago. There have been six generations of his family living in Division 6 and through his construction company, Byrnes Earthmoving, he has got to know every nook and cranny of the shire and many people living in it. He has spent the past month reading up on the rules and regulations a councillor must follow and has been meeting with a vast number of the community. If elected he will be withdrawing his offer to supply the council with earthmoving equipment through his business for the occasional plant hire. Mr Byrnes will be restructuring his business to conform with council duties and after numerous meetings with local residents and feels he needs to take a stand and nominate for the job. Mr Byrnes is aware that

councillors at TRC have faced a torrent of criticism over the past six months. One of the items Mr Byrnes would like to address is the perception of a lack of communication between council and the community. Mr Byrnes said one of the main reasons he wants to become a councillor is to maintain a good working relationship between the council workforce and residents, ensuring conditions and awards are fair to all. “Its imperative that promotion of local business and development is maintained to ensure job security for future generations and prosperity of the area,” he said. Mr Byrnes said he hopes the community will back him for the position. “With me what you see is what you get,” he said. “I’m not going in there for the money and there’s nobody that can deny my work ethic so if the community puts their faith in me, I will put my best foot forward.” Mr Byrnes said he wants to go into the job with a positive mind set and feels that more effective and efficient outcomes can be achieved. “I want long term sus-
quantify their value. In a statement made to The Express on Friday, mayor Joe Paronella admitted a mistake had been made but that the full extent of it was not yet known. “It has come to our attention that there is an anomaly with the adopted rating model used for 2017/18,” he said. “Based on our available data, we believe it has made a zero impact to the overall budget and has less than approximately 1 per cent distributional affects across the total revenue although we are trying to confirm the specifics of the distributional impacts.” He confirmed that an “independent review and verification of the anomaly is being undertaken” and that the Chair of the external audit committee has been advised. “Continuing in our commitment to transparent and accountable governance processes, there will be communication to the
public once the review is complete,” he said. “In going forward for the 2018/19 Budget, we are adopting a very robust process which will involve high level experts in the complex field of rate modelling. As we outlined in public communications last year we have engaged an independent consultant who is undertaking an extensive review of our rating framework including categories, bands, cents in the dollar amounts and discrepancies, some of which have been carried over from the previous rating schemes prior to amalgamation.” Cr Paronella assured that Tablelands Regional Council would be adopting a “revised and sustainable rating model to be used for future budgets.” He also confirmed that the Finance Manager had resigned “for private and confidential reasons” and that a replacement was currently being sought.

Nullinga Dam doomed under Labor Queensland hasn’t built a new dam in 10 years and it’s now obvious this lazy Labor Government will never build another. The fiasco surrounding the proposed Nullinga Dam proves they’re just paying lip service to Far North Queensland’s growing water needs. The Palaszczuk Government ordered a business case for the dam nine months ago and has now ordered a second – because the first wasn’t detailed enough. If they can’t even deliver a business plan there’s no way they will deliver the dam. The truth is Labor hasn’t got the guts to stand up to the Greens and fight for much-needed dams. Nullinga on the back-burner is a bad idea The Nullinga Dam has been put on the back-burner forever it seems now that Building Queensland has
decided the was not enough demand for any more water. The irrigators on the Tablelands would disagree after having their allocations cut in half last year and at the time of writing the dam sits at about 47%. Cairns is itching to get its hands on more water and now that Labor controls the city look out for a new raid on Tinaroo. The State Government recently put out a tender to demolish a 1200 megalitre, full dam on the property Springvale at Lakeland which the Environment Department acquired in 2016, so it seems they just don’t like dams anywhere. Why does the Labor Party hate farmers? I heard Bob Katter mention the Mitchell River and a plan to divert water from the North Johnson River into Tinaroo. He planned to get federal money and by-
pass the state. Unfortunately I remember reading a story in the Atherton paper a 18 months or so ago about the Agricultural Minister at the time, Bill Byrne, saying there would be no new irrigation dams in Queensland because there was little return on investment. He said there could be new dams built for city water supplies because they can get their money back much more quickly by charging councils and homeowners. Therefore we knew Nullinga would never be built because farmers grow food. I wonder what Labor politicians eat? Keith Courte Mareeba
Calm down Ms Lui over climate change
The new Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui (The Express, 21/2), may be misrepresenting the incredible resilience of Torres Strait Islanders in her maiden parliamentary speech by suggesting that “climate change” represents a “threat” to them. 19,000 years ago the climate changed abruptly; an ice age ended and seas rose 120 metres in a couple of quick mass-melts. The locals back then evidently had no difficulty adapting to the resulting rapid coastline changes. There is nothing to suggest that TSI people have lost that ancient adaptive capacity, so why does Ms Lui seek to frighten her constituents with terms like “impact” and “threat”? Peter Campion Tolga

New Swift Sport Turbo – test drive today MORO AUTO REPAIRS THE EXHAUST SPECIALISTS
Suzuki’s new Swift Sport Turbo hits the market with 38.6 percent more power and 113 percent more torque than the original Suzuki Swift GTi. And now, in 2018, Suzuki Queensland has unveiled the 1.4 litre Swift Sport Turbo delivering 103kW, but more importantly, 230Nm matched to six speed manual or automatic transmissions. “You can play the power stats game in almost countless ways,” said Suzuki Queensland’s General Manager - Sales and Marketing, Mr Stephen Craig. “You can even calculate your case in dollars per kW,” he said. “But in the final shootout, it comes down to matching the lightest possible weight, with the most appropriate amount of power and integrating them into a superb handling package, backed by an unchallenged reputation for outstanding reliability.” “And it’s across the combination of those fronts, with the added advantage of outstanding value for money, that the new Suzuki Swift Sport Turbo holds all the aces.”
“We have backed the new, higher levels of performance with key safety assistance features,” Mr Craig said. They include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) which assists the Swift Sport Turbo driver to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, by automatically accelerating or decelerating. The system uses millimetre-wave radar and can be engaged for speeds over 40km/h. The Swift Sport Turbo also has Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS). DSBS is a collision mitigation braking system using a monocular camera as well as laser sensors and receivers. The system is designed to detect obstacles such as pedestrians and cars directly ahead. If the system determines there is a risk of collision, it issues an alarm and displays lights in the meter cluster to warn the driver. If the system determines that the risk of a collision has increased even more, the Swift automatically engages forceful braking to minimise injury to people and damage to property. At speeds of 60km/h or greater, the Lane De-
parture Warning system predicts the path of the vehicle and issues the driver with a warning light as well as a vibration through the steering wheel, if it detects that the vehicle appears to be accidentally straying out of its lane. The Weaving Alert evaluates the driving pattern and issues a visual warning on the dash and an audio warning if the vehicle appears to be wandering such as through driver drowsiness. “The systems incorporate a monocular camera, a laser sensor and a millimetre-wave radar sensor to detect obstacles and lanes in order assist, rather than replace, the observation and vehicle management skills of the driver.” Mr Craig said. The Swift Sport Turbo also has a speed limiter which, for example, can be set at 40km/h when required for passing through roadworks or school zones during hours of restricted speed. Just like systems used on racing cars to limit their speed when entering and driving through the pits, it’s a
button activated feature. Another active safety feature is High Beam Assist (HBA) which automatically switches the headlamps between high beam and low beam according to surrounding conditions. The Swift Sport Turbo also has ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution; Electronic Stability Program; Hill-hold function on the six speed

The final romantic screening of the latest FIFTY SHADES FREED movie is this Wednesday, February 28, while the amazing family action adventure THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, shows one last time this Sunday, March 4.
The new historical biographical drama THE POST with Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Sarah Paulson premieres this Thursday at the Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba. Set in the halcyon end days of Richard Nixon's controversial presidency, the much awaited release
of this thrilling drama starts off an exciting week on the big screen. Also continuing for another week is the enthralling comedy drama I, TONYA and the incredible adventure sci-fi thriller from the Marvel universe, BLACK PANTHER.
THE POST – When American military analyst, Daniel Ellsberg, realizes to his disgust the depths of the US government's deceptions about the futility of the Vietnam War, he takes action by copying top-secret documents that would become the Pentagon Papers. Later, Washington Post owner, Kay Graham, is still adjusting to taking over her late husband's business when editor Ben Bradlee discovers the New York Times has scooped them with an explosive expose on those papers. Determined to compete, Post reporters find Ellsberg himself and a complete copy of those papers. However, the Post's plans to publish their findings are put in jeopardy with a Federal restraining order that could get them all indicted for Contempt. Now, Kay Graham must decide whether to back down for the safety of her paper or publish and fight for the Freedom of the Press. In doing so, Graham and her
staff join a fight that would resentatives. Her associahave America's democratic tion to that incident led to ideals in the balance. Things are changing...
When selling rural and agricultural property, experience and knowhow is of utmost importance to the seller. Choosing the right real estate agent is paramount; it’s the difference between selling and not selling your property. Michael Piagno and Mark Upham from Great Northern Realty between them, have over 40 years’ experience in this specialised field.
They are the kind of agents you need to have a successful outcome. Great Northern Realty will only have a maximum of 10 properties at any given time they look after, thus assuring that maximum effort is put into each property. What’s more Michael and Mark are totally mobile, their office is your property. Both have been trained by the best people in the world; understand the concept of market-
ing and most properties they sell are without a price leaving a pathway for both buyer and seller to negotiate the correct price of the property. Great Northern Realty are the only agency with a full research department with highly specialised staff that have access to a huge data base using the latest technology with access to agents from all over the world and with the knowhow of dealing with overseas clients.
The property and real estate market is constantly changing and evolving and keeping up with the latest trends, technology and sales techniques will only benefit the two negotiating parties. A new trend is “Corporate Buying and Leasing”. In his retirement a farmer may have the option to just lease his farm to a corporate entity thus ensuring a steady income for the duration of the lease and retain his property. Corporate real estate professionals like Great Northern Realty typically dedicate greater emphasis and time on multi-site long range planning and is almost exclusively focused on agricultural and commercials property types. With Mareeba, Atherton, Gulf and the Northern Peninsula’s rich fertile agricultural properties getting more recognition and in high demand, the team at Great Northern Realty have gained access to new markets and quality products with investors looking to capitalise in the future boom areas.
Experience is everything!

Red Devils thrash Barras in season start By Liam Daly
The Red Devils have made it back-to-back wins to start the 2018 winter season, riding a lights-out shooting performance from young guard Luke Fresta to register a comprehensive 66-22 win over the hapless Barras on Thursday night. Fresta poured in 25 points, shooting a Steph Curry-like 7 from 10 from three-point range. Fellow perimeter threat Kobe Ahwang played a cerebral supporting role, dishing assists and adding a highefficiency 11 points. Devils’ veterans Andy Harris and Craig Fairley controlled the tempo and provided the structure to let their young sharp-shooters shine. Big men Clinton Eales and Wade Smorfitt were dominant in the paint, rounding out a classy performance for the early
competition favourites. The Barras, missing departed star Daniel Ruggeri and young-gun Zayd Myrteza, gave away too many cheap points in transition and completely failed to close out on the Devils’ red-hot, long-range snipers. With two losses to start the season, and a plusminus deficit of more than 100 points, it couldn’t be a worse start to the season for last-year’s semi-finalists. They Barras will, however, take positives from a committed performance from new recruit Mark Plowman and another strong showing from much-improved big man Tommy Harvey, who had a team-high 16 points in defeat. The Red Devils’ demolition job sets up an intriguing top of the table Round 3 clash with The Highlanders, a new addition Maree-

Cooktown couple up for charity ride ba Basketball Association men’s competition, comprised of the cream of the u18s competition. Earlier, Jeremy’s Guns moved clear at the top of the table in the u18s, accounting for the Brick Squad 41-21 with a composed all-round performance. Fresta and Ahwang were again standouts in their first run for the night. Brick Squad captain Jake Priestly was typically strong in a losing effort, showcasing an unstoppable range of post moves on offence and piling up the swats on defence. Jett Fittock and Thomas Flynn were willing at both ends of the court, helping to keep the Brick Squad in the fight until a lack of substitutes took its toll in the fourth quarter, and the Guns went on an uncontested run to put the game beyond reach.
IT was while riding in one fundraising bike ride that Rebecca Buldo’s interest in another fundraising ride was piqued. The Cooktown nurse said the R’n’R MTB Adventure would be a family affair – with her husband Paul volunteering and brother-in-law Mick also riding. The R’n’R MTB Adventure is a cycling initiative of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, following the overwhelming success of the Mount Franklin Cardiac Challenge. Cyclists in the R’n’R MTB Adventure will travel from Mareeba to Forsayth in May, with the option of returning on the world famous Savannahlander train. “My passion came about from my good friends in Cooktown who encouraged me to join them in riding socially, which soon led to more serious training for the Cardiac Challenge. For some, they have never missed a year since its inception. It was during my second Cardiac Challenge
last year during one of the many chats you have with the cyclists in your pack, that one of the riders was promoting the R’n’R,” Ms Buldo said. “I mentioned this to my brother-in-law who lives interstate and he leapt at the idea. How could I say no? Clearly, this was going to be a fantastic opportunity. Events such as these contribute greatly in providing much needed funding and I feel proud that I can contribute.” Mick Buldo, who works in the defence force in Canberra, has been a commuter cyclist for 20 years and did the Mount Franklin Cardiac Challenge for the first time in 2016 and again in 2017. “For me, it was an opportunity to get motivated for a great cause – the professional connection to Rebecca’s nursing work, and also a great reason to catch up with family,” Mr Buldo said. And he’s planning to ride the R’n’R MTB Adventure on his fat bike – a normal bicycle but with oversize tyres to allow

The away team had them at 1 for 55 off 13 overs, eventually finishing on 4 for 135. Mareeba’s batting started off slowly and after loosing a couple of early wickets to be 2 for 7, they then started to put a few runs on the board being 2 for 61 at drinks. It come down to the wire, needing 12 of the last over, but they could only manage to get 5 loosing by 7 runs with some great batting by Damon Leeds, Ben Miles and Mac Cureton keeping Mareeba in the game. Mareeba’s Under 14’s played Mulgrave at Fuller Park on Saturday. In a rain affected match Mareeba
ended their first innings on 5/196. Angus Campman played a ‘Captain’s Knock’ to be 100 not out with support from Jamie Curcio on 43. Mareeba bowled well to keep Mulgrave at 2/62 off their overs. Liam’s podium finish Liam Waters, 13, from Mareeba, competed recently in the first round of the Motostars road racing competition in the senior category at Port Macquarie. Despite the lengthy drive to get to the event and having never raced at the track previously Liam still managed to put in a solid performance. In the first race Liam had a poor start and slipped to fifth by the first corner. He managed to eventu-
ally move into fourth place a lap from the finish however was unable to make up the gap lost before the end of the race. A better start in the second race saw Liam battling for third but he was pipped on the finish line. The final race saw the same battle recommence and after a nice move on the inside of corner eight just two laps from the end Liam was able to bring home a comfortable third place on his Honda NSF100.
“I was happy that as the day went on I felt more comfortable with the track and was able to push. The Honda lacked the horsepower of the Kayo 150’s I was riding against but it cornered better so I had to use that to my advantage,” he said. “It was nice to Liam Waters, 13, finished in 3rd place at the Motostars finish on the podium and road racing competition in Port Macquarie. it was great to race with again at the Motorstars Proserpine, Townsville and some of the best young Toowoomba round and at FNQRR Interclub series on riders in Australia” Liam will be racing the Mareeba round of the April 28 at the Mako Trac.
New committee ready to roll for 2018 The Mareeba United Football Club is getting down to the business of organising their season ahead after electing a new committee with a new direction at their AGM on Monday, February 19. The club is back on track after failing to attract members to fill the management committee after two AGM attempts. With financial discrepancies put to rest the MUFC is looking forward to another successful season as both junior and senior teams in all divisions begin to take shape.

Semi-finals ahead for Atherton cricketers
Atherton would appear to have assured themselves a Cricket Far North semi-final berth after claiming 1st Innings points against Barron River on the opening day of their 2-day match against Barron River at Crathern Park. Barron won the toss and elected to bat, but were not able to build any partnerships as Seppe Barletta and Luke Parnell claimed 6 wickets in their opening bowling spells. Seppe finished the match with impressive figures of 6-21 off 13 overs which included a hat-trick opportunity. Luke Parnell 2-29 and Tom Boorman 1-0 accounted for the remaining wickets as Barron were dismissed for 70 runs. As weather closed in, Atherton set about chasing the total and claimed 1st Innings points before the Tea break. Rain interrupted play soon after the Tea break causing a lengthy delay. As the rain cleared and play resumed Gerard Fox and Fred Pittorino showed their intent with Gerard piling on 43 runs off 23 balls to reach his century before rain set in again and play stopped.
