Mareeba man has travelled to Sydney for a dual organ transplant, in a bid to return to a relatively healthy and hap py lifestyle. Damien Hughes, who has battled type two diabetes since the age of 21 (1995), has been through a significant amount of emotional and physical strain in recent times. “All my troubles really began in 2010, as my
“I was dialysing at home of a night,” he said. “A regime of 8 hours, 7 nights a week; and after five cases of peritonitis infections in two years it was time for some changes.” Fast forward to Valentine’s Day 2015 and Mr Hughes finally received a call he had been waiting extensively for. “A long awaited call came on Valentine’s Day morning from the transplant team at Westmead Hospital in Sydney; to say that it was my turn and matching organs had been donated,” he said.
eyesight began to fail,” he said. “It was found that I had early stages of retinopathy. “By 2012, I had a vitreous haemorrhage, which needed open eye surgery in Brisbane and follow up laser treatment and injections which have continued up until this day.” Mr Hughes’ plight took a turn for the worse in 2013, suffering kidney failure. After Peritoneal Dialysis was deemed the only option, he undertook a rigorous regime.
“I was told to immediately get to the airport and fly to Sydney, which I did without delay. “I was in theatre by 11pm for a six hour surgery. I was a little bit hazy on recovery but I felt different.” For mother Helen, Damien’s journey has been extremely consuming for the family, but they have been faultless in their support for him. “Before he was originally diagnosed, we

Currently 14 years of age, Billy is a prefect at Atherton State High School, along with holding various positions at both student council and junior leadership level. Academically, he is pushing himself to the limit, studying the following: Physics, Maths C, Senior Astronomy and Astrophysics, Chemistry, Authority English, Maths B and Music. Tiarne Reedy was victorious in Mareeba’s ceremony, while Kate Wilcox walked away with success in the public speaking component of the competition. Ms Reedy, who attends St Stephen’s College, is president of the school’s representative council. She has also shone academically. Billy and Tiarne will now advance to the Zone judging on March 14.

NEW secondary student leaders were acknowledged at a special Mareeba State High School ceremony last Tuesday. Changes to high school eligibility (from 2015, students in year seven begin high school) mean that two new cohorts of students have begun high school life. Students were addressed by school staff throughout the assembly, with key information on upcoming events and expectations clearly conveyed. New students were encouraged to ‘expand their mind’, due to the high school chapter of their life being extended by a year. Clayre Girgenti and Kyle Hastie were unveiled as the school’s year seven leaders,

Growers to benefit from new course QUEENSLAND Commodity and Services has teamed up with Rural Training Queensland to offer local canegrowers a nationally accredited sugar pricing and risk management course. The course (which will be free) will be held at a series of locations, including Mossman and across several towns on the Tablelands. All sessions will held between March and April, with canegrowers able to walk away with more opportunity to grow their enterprise. QCS CEO Nick Walters said the course would give greater insight into forward pricing for all attendees, along with solid comprehension of financial management techniques.
“Upon completion of the course, growers will be able to confidently manage their own forward pricing and identify and manage risks that have the potential to influence their pricing,” he said. “Participants will also receive a nationally recognised competency towards a Diploma of Agribusiness Management. “This training is proudly funded and supported by the Queensland Government through its Industry Partnerships Strategy Program.” If you would like any further information on the course, or to register interest in participating, please visit www. qcs.com.au.

noticed a big change in Damien’s behaviour,” he said. “He went to the GP and then began a series of medication and diet changes.” Helen said the last three years had been brutally tough on her son, who had undergone a series of eye operations (to stop bleeding on the eye) along with his dialysis. The hardest moment for the family came during one fateful day in Smithfield, where Helen and her 90 year old father-in-law needed to carry Damien into a cafe, while he was experiencing a blood sugar ‘low.’ Over 1.1 million have been diagnosed in Australia, with 100,000 new cases in 2014, an average of 280 new cases every day. Type two diabetes (which ac-
counts for up to 90 per cent of all cases) is a result of the pancreas not providing enough insulin or there is little or no response between insulin and human body skin cells. Mr Hughes’ family have set up an account to help him get back on his feet after he recovers from the transplant and welcome anyone who may wish to donate toward it. Both Mr Hughes and the family stress that he only requires a portion of donated funds ‘to initially get by’, with all remaining funds being returned to the Mareeba Hospital, along with the Atherton Renal and Cairns Base Renal unit. The account details are as follows: Account name: DAMIEN HUGHES REHABILITATION FUND. BANK: BENDIGO BANK: BSB: 633 000 ACCOUNT NUMBER: 1541 73 363.

APA Theatre under threat I have enjoyed the APA performances at the iconic igloo over the past five years. It is a pleasure to see children, youth and adults performing on stage at such an historic venue and convenient location. I just slip across to do some shopping, before going to a local performance and then head home. Now, there appears to be a threat to our beloved APA Theatre’s position. Perhaps in the initial design a competent architect would have planned for the future. Tableland Investments would have been better initially designing a double storey weather-proof car park, instead of aggressive business people trying to oust a valuable community group. It appears they want to uproot existing buildings like the local APA theatre to make room for more carparks, because they didn’t get it right the first time. Maria Parenti-Baldey, Millaa Millaa
Now is the time to only buy local If ever there was a boost to the “Buy Australian” and “Buy Local” campaign, that boost came courtesy of the disgraceful episode of the contaminated frozen berries in recent days. This should be a wake -up call to all current governments and a source of shame for previous ones who sat on their hands over many years and did nothing. To his credit, Bob

Katter has been consistent on this issue for years, with little success. Because of Government policy, we are at serious risk of illness because we are eating foods from, mainly Coles and Woolworths, that are grown in soil enriched with human byproducts, washed in contaminated water, and then frozen for us to eat. On the other hand, our farmers have to comply with standards that are so strict that these standards are stifling the ability of those farmers to stay viable while they try to compete with imports. Of course our farmers should abide by strict standards of cleanliness throughout the whole process , and they do, but so should those countries from whom we import. Farmers in the Lockyer Valley recently asked for Government support to build a processing factory in their vicinity. The now defunct Queensland Government, under the influence of Jeff Seeney, refused their request. Nothing further needs to be said. Peter Beatts, Mareeba
Community group should not be bulldozed When Tableland Investments started their planning for their shopping precinct, they were well aware that their land was bound by Wilkinson’s Engineering, Atherton Performing Arts and the adjoining roads. Yet they designed and developed a shopping complex with parking for their customers that they now

deem inadequate. So, this group of local businessmen along with their southern associates (Scott Property Development Investment) wishes for a local community group to move. Perhaps these developers did not realize the State Government owns this land and council the building; and as such, it is an asset of the people of Queensland. Also, Silo Central does have adequate parking according to council regulations. Atherton Performing Arts (APA) has been using this building since 1981 as a community based theatre. We the members of APA,are extremely happy with this theatre and question why a group which has contributed to the cultural growth of the community for over thirty years should be asked to move. In 2011, APA met with Tableland Investment and Scott PDI, where the investors made the statement that: they realised APA would not be interested in shifting unless provided with a theatre equivalent to the current; but with improvements as an incentive to move. APA clearly stated in 2011 they were open to negotiation, and we still wait three years and four months later for Tableland Investment and Scott PDI’s response. The lack of response along with their presentation to council last week, would tend to indicate their wish to bulldoze a local not for profit community group; then follow by bulldozing the APA Theatre. Attendance is another high priority for the school in 2015, with school administration aiming for a 95% attendance record for every enrolled student. School staff are tremendously proud of some former students, who have began their new transition to secondary schooling superbly. At Mareeba State High School’s recent award ceremony for year seven and eight cohorts, several former Biboohra State School students achieved highly.
Felicity Pollard is one student who has hit the ground running in 2015, being awarded the ‘Community Spirit’ across year seven and eight. Sam Beattie was awarded a scholarship through success in English, while Lacey Gibb achieved a similar honour in performing arts. Clayre Girgenti and Jaylen Boyle were also commended for their achievements, with the Biboohra community hoping more success is on the horizon.

BREASTSCREEN Qld are sending out an urgent plea to women in the Atherton area, as numbers in their free service have spiralled. Located at the Atherton Showgrounds until March 13, women are able to access this service and put their health at the forefront. BSQ Promotion Officer Rowena Cramp said the facilities currently offered in Atherton were equal to of those expected in Cairns. “We are fortunate to have the opportunity to move this state of the art equipment across the region with our mobile service,” she said. “This ensures the same quality care and access for all women, no matter where they live. “We are currently down about 347 ladies with lots of free appointments left. “If we don’t fill these appointments we will have to leave Atherton earlier and move onto our next site so these appointments don’t go to waste. “We want to give ladies the opportunity to know this service is available now and remind those that might have forgotten to jump in and book their appointment.”

Katter calls for priority on food labels FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has called for the Abbott Government to enforce tighter restrictions on food imported in Australia. Mr Katter’s plea comes after four people had fallen seriously ill in Sydney, after eating tuna from a cafe in Sydney. The tuna in question had been imported from Thailand. In Canberra alongside independent senator Nick Xenophon, Mr Katter said he was determined to co-sponsor a bill (Imported Food Warning Labels Bill 2015) with Federal Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, into parliament this week. “Had the Government listened two years

He doesn’t have a choice at the moment as he doesn’t know where the product comes from.” Mr Katter said himself and Mr Wilkie had consulted with producers of Australia’s fish and prawn market and would do their upmost to represent them. “My prawn farmers, an industry worth about $600 million a year, has been destroyed down to about $30 million a year,” he said. “Why? because we have hygiene and environmental standards that are not applied to

But today, consumers are paying the penalty. “The issue today is tuna. What we absolutely know is that the prawn and the fish farms in the countries north of Australia, where the vast bulk of Australian fish farming takes place, dump raw sewerage into the rivers and creeks and that water is put into the fish farms.”

Attendance on track in Mareeba By Justin Fris
MAREEBA schools have recorded a promising start to school attendance in the New Year, bucking a trend set across the Far North. A recent report from State Education Minister Kate Jones indicated that the region’s overall attendance had dipped below 90 per cent two years ago, with FNQ state school’s attendance rate below 80 per cent. No such problems have occurred in Mareeba, with the successful establishment of the ‘Attendance Accord.’ A system which has been embraced by local business along with stakeholders, the concept is designed to bond everyone together and maintain excellent attendance across the board. St Thomas’s Parish School has successfully implemented a new electronic method of recording attendance, with parents or guardians notified via SMS if their child is not at school.
FNQ education stakeholders have earmarked an ideal overall attendance figure of 92.2 per cent across the region, with the current rate at 91.3 per cent. Mareeba State School Assistant Principal Hannah Simpson said she had witnessed an impressive start to the year, especially between the prep to year three age group. “11 out of 20 classes between the prep to year three range have commenced the year with a 96 per cent attendance rate,” she said. “Of those remaining nine classes, the rate is around 91 per cent.” Ms Simpson also praised the efforts of the school’s new family liaison officer (Marcia), who has played an integral part in helping students get to school. “Along with Marcia, I myself have done 12 home visits this week,” she said. “These visits are really important as we can sit down with parents and do our upmost to help support getting their child to school.”
Mareeba State School had four students in Term 4, 2014, achieve 100 per cent school attendance.
NQ musicians being heard in Cairns By Justin Fris
MUSICIANS across the Tablelands will be making themselves heard in Cairns this weekend, with the NQ State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) conference being held. The conference will be made up of 171 students who will be representing 31 different schools and colleges across the NQ region. All course attendees have been nominated by their schools as a result of proven excellence and application to their talent. Locally, musicians from Atherton State High School, Malanda State High School and Mareeba State High School will participate. Atherton State High School will have five representatives at the event, which will include: Shana Backshall, Jordan Dennis, James McElligott, Kailey Stroud and School Captain, Georgia Whybird. This will be one of the first major commitments of the year for Ms Whybird, who has shown promise in several fields outside of secondary schooling. Three of Australia’s most renowned conductors (Dr Rob Williams, Mr Stephen Chin and Mr Tim Sherlock) will put the students through their paces, which already has been described as ‘intense’. The culmination of the weekend conference will be a special concert, which will be held at St Mary’s College from 1pm on Sunday afternoon.

THE infamous Tractor Pull is set to make a triumphant return at the 2015 Rotary Field Days at Kerribee Park in May. Last held in 2013, the Tractor Pull was immensely popular with organisers and spectators alike, which plans under way for a purpose-built track. Tractors (with an 80 horse power capacity) will compete over a set distance of 120 meters. They will pull a sled and meet a series of specific criteria. Rotary FNQ Field Days Committee chair Ida Portella said she was hopeful the tractor pull would again entice lots of visitors to the event. “This year, we are investing in making the tractor pull bigger and better, with an improved sled, a dedicated emcee and a better demonstration area,” Ms Portella said. Local inventors are also being encouraged to step forward and participate in the inventors contest, with two categories on offer. Competition organiser John Hardy said there were several opportunities for entrepreneurs to shineon the big stage. “This competition, sponsored by the North Queensland Register and Travel Experience.com, often serves as a platform for bigger and better things for the inventions, with exposure guaranteed to thousands of people,” Mr Hardy said. “The class winners will receive $500 cash each, with the overall winner to also receive $500 cash and free travel and entry in the Australian National Field Days in Orange, NSW, in October.”

Language of our local country By Carl Portella and Justin Fris
Michael Quinn with his new dictionary, “Ngirrma Djabugay”, which will be released on March 13 in Kuranda.
SINCE calling Kuranda home in 1986, English anthropologist Michael Quinn has worked collaboratively to help preserve one of Australia’s oldest indigenous languages. With guidance from the local Bama community, both parties have worked intently to ensure that the Djabugay language fends off extinction. This passion has culminated in the release of a new dictionary, dubbed ‘Ngirrma Djabugay’ which will be released on March 13 at Kuranda’s CWA hall, from 6pm. Mr Quinn said there were several inspirations of the project and recounts his initial encounter with the Djabugay language. “When I arrived in Kuranda in 1986, I was fortunate enough to meet one the last initiated member of the tribe,” he said. “His English name was Lalfey Thompson; and this man laughed at me when I asked him to tell me about the people and the history. “He then said the only condition would be that I learnt the language first. “But he encouraged me; and in fact, inspired me.” Mr Quinn went to great lengths to study the Djabugay language, often walking in the rainforest listening through headphones. “If you grow up with a language around you, it’s very easy,” he said. “But, when you come into it from outside; and you are not hearing it spoken all around you... Sending report cards via email appears to be a sign of the times in 2015. By Justin Fris
MAREEBA State High School is set to trial sending out report cards via email, which will commence at the end of term two. MSHS Assistant Principal Teena Seidenkranz said the proposal had been the pipeline for several months, with herself and Jo Soothill (Principal) having regular discussion with the school staff and stakeholders on
the matter. “We had been initially concerned that not all parents may have regular access to their email or internet,” she said. “Therefore with the trial, we will continue with the traditional ‘mail out’ of reports, along with the new electronic method.” Prior to her tenure in Mareeba, Ms Seidenkranz had spent time in several schools in the Gold Coast region, who had successfully imple-
mented similar innovations. Currently the weekly newsletter is available across several different platforms, including an app which can be downloaded off any smartphone. BRIDGE OF “PEACE…S”
A bridge was needed to span a spoon drain in the backyard to access the Tobacco Display. The best quote was $2000, not on our shoestring budget. We had to do it ourselves. With instructions from our ‘Blind Builder’, we filled the drain with donated sand, built a casing over the sand, and filled with donated cement. The cement dried. Now to remove the sand, easy? Not so. The sand had packed rock hard, so the Fire Brigade was called. “No trouble at all, only too happy to help”. Their big pressure hose saved the day. Nearing the end, hand rails were needed. Four steel dray wheels seemed appropriate, two each side welded together, but we had no welder. Not to worry, a local earthmoving business lent us a welder for a day. “Trust me” said our welder, and ‘Trust me’ did a wonderful job. He welded the wheels into place and odd bits and pieces over the spokes with a piece of donated chain over the top of the wheels to anchor them down. The finished product is outstanding. A signpost made out of an old saw blade was kindly donated. The whole effect is excellent. Many countries have a “Bridge of Peace” – we have a Bridge of ‘Peace…s’. Thanks Mareeba!

ALP clarifies position on live export By Justin Fris
THE Palaszczuk Government has clarified its position on the live export trade, after remarks from a recent article had been taken out of context. Agricultural Minister Bill Byrne said he was a long-term supporter of the trade and was keen to work equally with all sectors of the industry, to maximise opportunity for all. “Last week I was asked to comment about a proposal by the former Member for Keppel, Bruce Young, to export live cattle from Port Alma,” he said. “Unfortunately media reports have not given a clear representation of my views and I want to clarify that position, to kill any suggestions in the industry and beyond that I will do anything to harm the live cattle trade. “The facts are that I have been a long-time supporter of the live cattle industry and I recognise its value to the beef sector. “Queensland is a world leader in cattle and beef production, with live cattle exports from Queensland ports reaching almost 200,000 head
Live export not only injects much needed money into Australia’s economy, but it also guarantees over 10,000 jobs in the agricultural industry.
in 2013/14. “I support diversity in the cattle sector; and as minister, I will work with both exporters of live cattle and meat processors to maximise economic opportunities for all.” Several representatives from the LNP and KAP were concerned after the release of the Rockhampton-based article, with Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter urging his MP’s to meet with Mr Byrne. “We have advised the KAP state members
that they get into see this Minister quick smart; to tell him that over a five year period, properly handled, we can double the cattle numbers in North Queensland,” he said. “Every cattle farmer knows that this is a reasonable target.” Federal Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch said that the live export trade was the ‘lifeblood’ of northern Australia; with the majority of the country pastoral-based. Mr Entsch, who has travelled extensively in
consultation with pastoralists, graziers and stakeholders, said many are still recovering from the trade’s suspension during 2011. “The disruption of trade had a profound impact on northern Australia,” he said. “Not just economically, but socially and environmentally as well. “Any government (regardless of political party persuasion) should stand up and squeal that ‘We will not consider any changes to the live export trade.”

Inventor Ron Larkin with his new ‘BioBowser.’
Dairy farmers can save money and the planet THERE have been several misnomers of the dairy farming industry, which has lead to accusations of causing environmental problems. This myth has been quickly dispersed by a Brisbane-based inventor, who has a created a system whereby farm waste can be turned into free energy. Effectively, cow manure can be used into heating, electricity or even engine fuel. The bio digester (BioBowser) system produces methane gas, with leftover material able to be
used as nutrient-based fertiliser. Mr Larkin said the amount of waste available and the flexibility of the system can suit a wide range of clientele. “All we need to know is quantity if waste available on a regular basis and the energy requirement and we can tailor the BioBowser system to suit the individual needs,” he said. “If the amount of waste increases or more gas is needed, we can put in more units as the system is modular. “A dairy farm milking three to
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
400 cows is likely to have five tonnes of manure waste in a day; which can produce 80 M3 of biogas, which is the equivalent of 60kg heat value of LPG. “This amount of gas is likely to be sufficient to meet the usual energy needs (such as milk chilling) or water heating. “Each BioBowser has to be tailored to suit the circumstances, such as the production of electricity or the use of gas (as a fuel for farm machinery) being plumbed into a farm site.”

INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day Make it happen – Sunday, March 8, 2015
Celebrating women Women all over the world will celebrate International Women’s Day this Sunday, March 8. International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the amazing achievements of all women, while calling for greater equality. The first international women’s conference in Copenhagen in 1910, the German socialist, Clara Zetkin proposed an international women’s day to assist in achieving the right to vote for women. The resolution was unanimously approved by representatives from 17 countries, however at this time only three countries around the world supported women’s right to vote. Each year International Women’s Day has a theme and the 2015 theme is ‘Make It Happen’. Make it Happen is aimed at encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women all over. How will you make it happen? This year women are also encouraged to support International Women’s Day and use your voice via social media with #MakeItHappen, #womensday, #IWD2015, #internationalwomensday and #PaintItPurple. The first International Women's Day was held in 1911. Thousands of events occur each year to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women's groups, corporations and the media celebrate this day. International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity to get together with your family, friends and colleagues and celebrate all your achievements and talk of ways to make it happen in 2015.
Here are some local inspiraring women who are Making it Happen...

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS Starting tomorrow at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema, is the powerful action packed drama thriller, based on the true life story of Chris Kyle, AMERICAN SNIPER – an excellent human drama. Set during the recent Iraq conflict starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Millar. Continuing for a second exhilarating week is THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, with its all star cast and most entertaining story, whilst Colin Firth returns in more screenings of KINGSMAN – THE SECRET SERVICE, back by public demand. This is an entertaining comedy thriller that takes a light – hearted look at the whole spy business. If you missed it, there is one last chance to see FIFTY SHADES OF GREY today, Wednesday March 4.
SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL As his imminent marriage to Sunaine (Tena Desae) draws near, Sonny (Dev Patel) is struggling to find time to do justice to his new project - acquiring a second property to expand his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. There is only one vacancy, causing a predicament for newly arrived guests Guy (Richard Gere)
and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Meanwhile, regular guests Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench, Bill Nighy) have joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their relationship is going, Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle) are working through their relationship and whether or not it should be exclusive, Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two suitors, while Muriel (Maggie Smith) is the keeper of everyone's secrets.
AMERICAN SNIPER
Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread he earns the nickname 'Legend.' However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He faces faces a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to 'leave no one behind.' When he returns home to his wife Taya (Sienna Miller) and kids, Chris finds
that it is the war he can't leave behind. Review by Louise Keller: It's like being there - right in the midst of a war zone, where life and death rely on split second decisions. For Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), the deadliest sniper in US history, the responsibility of making the call as to whether or not to pull the trigger, is something he does not takes lightly. Based on Kyle's book depicting his experiences, Clint Eastwood's hard-hitting film is intense, harrowing and extremely personal, as it exposes us to the immediacy, perils and unpredictability of war. It is impossible not to be moved by this affecting and confronting film whose dramatic arc canvasses context, background, personal life and the consequences. The tone of the action scenes is similar to that of The Hurt Locker; we are immersed in gunfire, danger lurking around every corner. The unpredictable can - and does - happen at any given moment. Look out for the scene in which an Iraqi local invites the soldiers to eat at his table and the sequence in which Kyle faces off with the sniper from the other side. Aim small; miss small is his motto. After 1,000 days in Iraq over four tours, 160 kills and the loss of close colleagues, Kyle returns home only to continue to hear screams and gunfire. But this time, they are only in his head. Eastwood addresses the psychological issues effectively and with candour. The final sequence is profoundly moving, its calm simplicity a sharp contrast to the frenetic chaos of the war action. The end credits roll in respectful silence, a fitting tribute to an exceptional patriot as well as those who serve and protect their country. This is the story of a remarkable man, as told by a remarkable filmmaker.

Mareeba United Football Club COME & RUN WITH THE BULLS IN 2015! A message from Mareeba United Football Club President –
Raymond Cater... 2014 was a year the Mareeba Bulls will long remember. Winning nine out of a possible 11 trophies in the Senior Men's FNQ/NQ football competitions including the much sought after Crad Evans Shield. Our ladies team finished just outside the top five. All our senior teams will be looking to repeat, or go one better in 2015. We are defending champions in three men's divisions. The pressure will be on us, but we have the class and confidence to rise to the challenge. The club's junior sides competed in Cairns for the first time in 2014, with outstanding success across every division. We have already taken giant steps forward in 2015, with eight junior and four senior coaches completing there youth level coaching license. This is a first for the Bulls, as we are encouraging our coaches to embrace a single vision across all age groups. Alex Srhoj has taken on the role as Technical Director of Coaching; and will oversee and help guide our volunteer coaching staff. Alex is the club’s C license accredited coach. He is also backing up as Premier Division coach along with: Marcello Savaglio, Reserve Division, Jim Hatchman, Women's Division and Ronnie Leporati, Youth Division. With the clubs committee members Mario Terranova and Michael Cipolla, also doing the course. Our junior coaching team is: Rosie and David Rantucci, Luch Avolio, Andrea Soncin, Rum Latif, Robert Battistin, Sandro Soncin, Mark Simmonato, Dennis Fregona and Victor Madrid. The club is backed by a large and committed committee, consisting of 18 members, who are all pulling together as one for the club and game. The club is continuing to revamp the Borzi Park complex, with new field perimeter signage now available. We have also secured the club's long term future with gaining another 7000sqm for additional training and playing fields. These fields will play a crucial role in developing our junior and senior teams of the future. The Bulls have always prided themselves on a fun family atmosphere at games and a safe secure environment for functions, 2015 will be no different, as the club celebrates an historic milestone; its 70th anniversary. For the first time in the clubs history every team form under six through to Premier Men's, will be dressed in the same playing kit and off field apparel. The club will also be holding its 70th birthday bash sometime mid year the date TBA. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our current & past sponsors, supporters and players who have continued to make the Mareeba Bulls the #1 football club in N.Q. I hope the wider footballing community of Mareeba will support our sponsors whenever possible. I also look forward to seeing the junior kit sponsors launch in a few weeks time in The Express.

Bulls eye back-to-back Mazda Cup crowns By Justin Fris
Stratford from all reports has had a sterling preseason on the track and will be keen to make amends for defeat in last season’s grand final. The Southside Comets have also recruited soundly across the board, while Edge Hill United will again feature prominently as a dark horse for the title. Ladies football will also be a major component of the day, with Edge Hill United and Innisfail heavily favoured to reach the business end of proceedings. MUFC and the Southside Comets are also expected to have improved seasons, which should ensure an intriguing from Mareeba Mazda group stage. With shorter matches and extensive catalogue of quality football, both grand final matchups will extend late into the evening. Local band Careless will be cranking the tunes until the wee hours of Sunday morning, with players and guests from the entire FNQ community encouraged to kick on and celebrate the beginning of the 2015 season.
MAREEBA United Football Club will conclude their pre-season training with participation in the upcoming Mareeba Mazda Cup tournament on Saturday, March 7, at Borzi Park. The Bulls, who will go into the event as defending champions, will need to soldier on through a solid day of football if they again wish to be crowned preseason champions. Changes to the structure of the Mazda Cup will mean the Bulls Alex Srhoj and David Mete (along with all other with the Mazda Cup. competing clubs) will play up to five matches in a day, of new 20 minute halves, if they make the final. Potentially having to toil under oppressive humidity and heat will be a massive ask for all teams, especially younger members of each squad. Players have completed six weeks of solid preseason training and are cautiously optimistic about their chances in the tournament. MUFC Premier Men’s Coach Alex Srhoj said the shorter match halves would be beneficial ahead of an www.mareebamitsubishi.com.au unpredictable early group stage phase. “With shortened games of 2x20 minute halves, anything can happen,” he said. “Three group matches, a semi and potentially a final will test the boys if we are to make it through. “We have ramped up training over the past two weeks; and last weekend’s intraclub game was just what we needed to get the bodies into condition heading toward the tournament.” Despite their excellent credentials, there are several other sides who will have plenty to say in how www.mareebamazda.com.au MUFC fares on the day.

Mareeba United Football Club COME & RUN WITH THE BULLS IN 2015!
Great expectations By Justin Fris
EXPECTATIONS have never been higher for Mareeba United Football Club, who will again be looking to entrench themselves in finals action. Talking of titles can be a difficult task, especially so young in the year, but club officials are optimistic their club can again rise to lofty heights. MUFC Premier Men’s Coach Alex Srhoj said there was a healthy level of confidence in the group, with both coaches and players acutely aware of what they must do.

“Naturally, we are not cocky, but we are confident, he said. “We raised the bar last year; now we need to work even harder to evolve and keep our standards high once again. “And hey, if we tick all the boxes and focus on what we can control, then you never know; perhaps it could be on the cards once again. Srhoj’s men have had to cover some major losses in the off-season, with 2014 Golden Boot striker Elliot Gardner moving on due to work and travel commitments. Along with Gardner, Kane Alderton, Victor Madrid and Steven Cater will not be kitting up for the Bulls this season. Srhoj acknowledged the loss of these players, but assured MUFC members and supporters that there is still plenty of quality in his side. “We still have plenty of quality, he said. “Any side with seven former state-league players and a national league player has to believe in their ability. “They have to believe in their ability, believe in each other and in the squad as a unit to achieve the goals which we set out. Senior players can feel confident that there is a solid contingent of younger players forging a successful start to their careers. Srhoj said he is excited about several talented 21 and 22 year old players who are on the brink of reserve and premier team selection. “There is some talent coming through, he said. “They all saw Ben Fresta break through the ranks last season. “Now the opportunity is there for a handful of others to make the move; and this is really exciting to see. Srhoj will also have Marcello Savaglio returning this season as the club’s reserve team coach, where several players will be competing heartily for spots.
MUFC focuses on youth development SWEEPING desire to further improve youth football at MUFC has resulted in several key additions for the coming season. For the first time, the Bulls are preparing to field separate youth and underage sides (from U/15 , U/16 and U/18) in a bid to strengthen senior ranks. Newly appointed coaches Ronnie Leporati and Andre Soncin are keen to ensure all footballers receive every opportunity to enjoy themselves and developed under the MUFC coaching philosophy. At training last Thursday night, Mr Leporati said he was impressed with the numbers in his squad, with some new players joining.
“During the pre-season, we’ve done a lot of work mainly on firsttouch passing, he said. “We all took part in the recent coaching workshop, which was good for the club. For MUFC Premier Men’s Coach Alex Srhoj, youth development is essential; and is keen to join forces with Andre and Ronnie to make all teams successful. “It’s so important to the club, he said. “It means everything for the future and I (along with the entire club) will be working with Andre and Ronnie to make sure this idea turns into a reality. “It’s going to be a bit of a balancing act, but I’m sure we will be able to achieve it.

LADIES football is set to become another major talking point in 2015, with MUFC fielding another senior side. Last season was a season of learning for all involved with the squad, with such experience able to be drawn on for the following season. Edge Hill United and Innisfail are regarded as perennial heavyweights in the league, however MUFC is determined to throw down the gauntlet to them this season. With such a large talent base at its disposal this season, MUFC has put in a lot of work over the off-season to make sure the all ladies squads are supported extensively. Part of this process was the signing of senior ladies coach Jim Hatchman (pictured), who has already provided an energised feel to the squad.
“I think across the board, everyone is extremely excited, he said. “We have a good balance of older and younger women within our playing squad. “Having said that, we always have room for a few more; so we welcome anyone who would like to join us. Mr Hatchman, who has coached youth football prior to his current tenure, recently attended a coaching workshop with other MUFC coaches. The weekend-long coaching masterclass compounded Mr Hatchman’s love of football and he has adopted several strategies and ideas from the session. “I think it’s good that all teams throughout the club are following the same game structure, he said. Mr Hatchman is originally from Caboolture, which is on the outskirts of Brisbane. He has spent the majority of his life in the Far North, along with time in the cape.

THE word ‘United’ within Mareeba United Football Club will take on new meaning this season, with every player from juniors to seniors dressing in identical kits and polo shirts. After a positive response from the Mareeba business community, Alex Srhoj and Raymond Cater have seen their dream come true. “The response from local businesses and a couple of new big companies was overwhelming,” Srhoj said. “It’s hard to express the thanks to all businesses who have made this possible.” International clothing company KAPPA have signed as the club’s official jersey partner and also provided the club polo shirts. Along with KAPPA, Claude Cater Mensland has returned as major partners for the Premier Men’s squad, Moro Autos with the reserves and Travel Experience. com Mareeba, for the senior ladies. Seven new partners have also joined the club, which include: Redsun Fruit Agencies, Cairns Hardware, Curcio’s Bakery, PIMS, That’s My Physio, Break Thru, along with Mareeba Glass and Aluminium and North Queensland Security Fitters. Local sugar mill company MSF Sugar have also signed on as the major jersey partner for all five senior teams, along with The Express Newspaper. “The club works hard to make sure it is a partnership, not just a donation,” he said. “We want to be able to give back to the businesses who have supported us.”

The team at Joe Torrisi Real Estate: Online Producer Joshua Torrisi, Sales Representative Peter Dwyer, Principal Joe Torrisi and Administration officer Trina Torrisi.
Joe Torrisi celebrates a year in business JOE Torrisi Real Estate is celebrating the completion of their first year in business and the team would like to thank all their clients, colleagues, family and friends for their support over the past year. “We've built a lot of great relationships already, and we're looking forward to strengthening them even further,” Said Joe. “We would like to take this opportunity to say thanks for helping to make Joe Torrisi Real Estate a success”. A year on, Joe Torrisi Real Estate has expanded with local Peter Dwyer, joining the sales team. Peter is a familiar face having lived in far north queensland for more than 46 years. Peter possesses a wealth of agricultural knowledge having worked in key roles on farming properties in the area for the past 18 years undertaking all aspects of operation, as well as providing chemical/fertilizer sales and advice. Peter also has a background in hospitality and tourism and most recently in property investment.
“We are excited to have Peter join our team. He has the understanding, skills and knowledge to assist all buyers,” Said Joe. Joe Torrisi Real Estate prides themselves on offering a personal approach, service and dedication. Here is what some of their clients had to say.... “I felt at ease and very comfortable with Joe. He genuinely listened to me, and offered advice without ever making me feel pressured. He listened to my concerns, understood what I was looking for in a new home and accepted my feedback on properties without prejudice. Joe was very responsive with scheduling inspections, extremely diligent with appointments and responses to my enquiries. Joe was upfront, honest and professional with his negotiations and communications, from the initial property enquiry and inspections, through to the purchase of my new home. As Joe and his family are locals of the area, I felt I could

totally trust their advice, knowledge and expertise in the property market. If you’re about to undertake a property purchase, sale or just need advice on the local market, I would recommend Joe and Trina, you won’t regret it”. Sonia Van Dorssen. “We cannot thank Joe and the team enough for all your help and support during the purchase of our first block in Amaroo Estate. The whole process of purchasing land was very new to both of us being quite young. It was kind of like a foreign language. Joe was extremely professional and patient and his passion and knowledge shines through. Dealing with Joe has given us a sense of confidence in our choices and where we can go from here”. PROPERTY Amaroo – building dreams, creating lifestyle When you consider the advantages, the decision to build a new home over buying existing, is an easy one. Today’s knowledge of home building has improved enormously over the past few decades and new homes are built better than ever. They are solidly constructed and well designed for today’s lifestyles. New homes are highly energy efficient, and offer new flooring products, roofing and windows. The building products of today work better, last longer and look better. The result is a brand new home that is far more comfortable and healthier, easier to maintain and more enjoyable to live in. Existing homes do not come with a warranty. If something goes wrong, you have to deal with it, no matter what the cost. Building a new home offers peace of mind. Certified builders stand behind their work with a warranty. Building a new home allows you to have what you want from the very start. From layout, colours, appliances to cabinets to flooring, new home builders offer a wide selection of standard and up-grade options. You can choose what suits your own lifestyle, desires and budget. Old homes have hazards such as asbestos, lead based paint or faulty wiring. They may predate building codes that have improved and changed over the years. New Homes have been tested to meet the strictest of safety standards. Building a new home gives buyers lead-time to sell their home and/or to do some planning and designing. Lots at Amaroo are now under construction, it is achievable to be in your new home by Christmas this year. If you are a first home buyer the First Home Owners Grant is an absolute bonus. Amaroo Land Sales Office open, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 3pm, or by appointment anytime. Phone Deb on 0409 321 000.

In Memoriam Ryley Piper Hogan 06/11/2010 - 09/03/2013 Your big brown eyes, your cheeky smile, your gentle touch, and your loving heart are just some of the things about you that we miss every day.
Phyllis Bimrose 28.01.37 – 25.02.14
Your smiling face and loving ways are with us every day. We miss you Mum. All our love Glenys, Joe, Giulia & Elena, John, Jenny, Bec & Hayley, Christine, Darryl, Brodie & Kelsey.
13.10.82 – 05.03.07 We will always remember, The adventurous life you lived. And keep alive those memories, Through everything you did. Yes, memories have a magic way, Of keeping loved ones near. Ever close in mind and heart, Are the ones we hold most dear. So as we gather and recall, Special times that we went through. With all the memories that warm our hearts, We honour the memory of you.
Forever loved, forever missed, forever in our hearts, Dad, Mum, Damon and Grandmum Rose.
AAron Zenel 13/10/82 05/03/07
GOD’S GARDEN God looked around his garden and found an empty place, He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again, He saw the road as getting rough and the hills were getting hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids, and whispered “Peace be thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home.
Sadly missed, Uncle Robert, Aunty Cris, Teresita, Rosita and Joseph. Like us & Join our 5,601 Facebook friends!

Students on the ball for cluster trials By Justin Fris
SECONDARY students across the Tablelands battled tirelessly in a bid to be recognised by talent scouts last Friday. Held in Atherton, students with a passion for hockey, rugby league and netball competed in a series of trial matches to determine Peninsula squads for an upcoming regional carnival.
In the U/15 netball trials alone, 50 girls were competing for 12 spots. And even for a failed mathematician, 50 into 12 doesn’t go. Representative coaches in attendance gazed over the court watchfully, looking for netballers who had excellent court sense, along with an ability to involve other teammates in the game.

Dimbulah represented at swimming sprint championships
Simon Muccignat completes some team roping.

LOCAL rodeo and roping competitors dusted off their boots and saddles last weekend for a jackpot event at Dimbulah. The two-day program hosted by FNQ Time Events and the Top End Western Horse Club saw more than 60 riders take to Buckingham’s Arena, competing in team roping, breakaway roping and barrel racing. Thirty-five teams lined up for the jackpot team roping on Saturday with lethal brother/sister duo Keir Tilse and Daley Tilse of Mareeba taking first place. Daley teamed up with cousin Brandin Tilse to place second, followed by Simon Muccignat and Jack Campbell in third. The open barrel race was hotly contented, but
ended up being another family affair in the placings with Tracey Leet taking out first and second place on her two mounts, just edging out sister Kym Clarke in third. Abbey Kent took out the 8-17 years barrels, ahead of Kelly Shepherd in second and Kaitlyn Everingham in third. While youngsters Max Cockrell and Jace Hughes were placed first and second respectively in the Under 7 barrels. On Sunday, many competitors returned to the arena for a practice cutting day, hosted by the Top End Western Horse Club. FNQ Time Events will host its next competition this weekend (March 8) at a venue yet to be decided.
Ford drives Bandits to away win in Tully By Justin Fris
Futsal success for local youngsters FNQ futsal side ‘One Touch’ recently competed in the U/11 A-grade grand final, capping off an impressive summer season. Three Mareeba lads will now focus on U/12 FNQ Heat duties, where they will play against the Townsville Fury.

BRILLIANT youngster Lachlan Ford added another quality performance to his season, with Mareeba crushing Tully by eight wickets on Sunday. The hosts fell victim to some confident bowling from the Bandits bowling attack, and were languishing at 9/78 off their 30 overs. In reply, the Bandits never eyed defeat, cruising along to 2/83 in the 18th over of the match, with Adam Roy (30) and Brendan Payne (18) knocking home the winning runs. Claiming 1/11 off six overs and being involved in two direct hit run-outs in the field, Ford’s deeds were complimented by Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams, who took 2/7 off his allotted spell.

STUDENTS converged on the Mareeba Pool last Thursday afternoon, for Mareeba State High School’s swimming carnival. All four school houses (Gregory, Leichardt, McKinlay and Kennedy) were all represented healthily along the grass banks, as everyone looked on at the remarkable spectacle in front of them. A 13 year school freestyle age group record was soundly trounced on the day, with Joshua Theakston completing his 50m freestyle in 28.75 seconds. The centrepiece event of the day were the relays, which gives neutrals and coaches alike the best indicator on who are the strongest swimmers under pressure. In the 50m pool, each race would have four legs (laps), with certain guidelines passed on to all by dedicated officials prerace. McKinlay house officials would have been chuffed with their newest crop of students, after two resounding victories in the 12-year old age group. The 13-year old girls relay produced the first climatic ending of the day, with Gregory and McKinlay battling for dominance during the 3rd leg of the race. However the McKinlay faithful had
their hopes dashed in the final 50m, with Kennedy sailing home to collect the victory. Another scintillating finish transpired during the 15- year old girls relay, with versatile athlete Sarrah Myrteza getting Gregory the victory off the back of true grit. After a bold start, Gregory had stopped to a walk during the penultimate leg of the race, before Myrteza began her second leg of the relay. McKinlay, who had looked certain for victory for half of the race, was eventually mown down by Myrteza in a photo finish. But by far the most enjoyable moment of the day, were the open relay races, where MSHS teachers (female and male) competed alongside their students. The camaraderie and humour between students and staff throughout the day was exceptional and shows both clearly have a healthy respect for each other. After official festivities had been finished, two races were held to determine the fastest overall students in the school. These races were won by Jackson Brown and Shenika McDowall. Aggregate point tallies were feverously tabled by judges, who adjudged McKinlay as swimming carnival champion, with 731 points.
NEWLY-elected Mareeba Gladiators President Andrew Foster is one of several dedicated volunteers who keep the wheels of rugby league turning in the town. Mr Foster, who grew up playing league in Warwick, has spent stints in Maroochydore and Roma. While in Roma, he met a young Darren Lockyer, who was training during the festive season. “I played some union in Roma and I remember we met Darren Lockyer,” he said. “He won a local passing competition and was always training, even over the Christmas break.” Having played, administered and watched his sons immersing themselves with the Gladiators, Mr Foster said he was excited to be able to give back to the code and the Mareeba community. Since becoming involved with the club five years ago, Mr Foster has undertaken a variety of roles, while his sons were players. “We have very good volunteers, who are committed for roughly seven or eight months of the year,” he said. Few would have little insight into how time consuming a matchday at Davies Park can be. As Mr Foster explains, it is all hands on deck for the 15 hour shift. “Matchday preparation actually begins during the week, where we begin to get certain food and drink items delivered,” he said. “On game day, we have volunteers that begin marking the fields from around 8am, while others pick up perishable food items and begin preparing them in the canteen. “The gates open at around 2pm and often festivities at the leagues club will wind up around 10.30pm. “We then are back bright and early at 8am on Sunday to begin the clean up, along with finalising player payments and first grade game footage.
“On Monday we are required to drive to Cairns to supply game footage to the CDRL; and by the time it is all complete, it’s back to training again on Tuesday night.” In his role as president, Mr Foster also has direct communication with CDRL officials. He attends monthly meetings and then informs the club on what has transpired. Mr Foster said he was pleased with the current crop of U/18 players and that significant strides had been undertaken during pre-season, due to the assistance of June Cotter at the Mareeba Pool.
