Rates error anger By Rebecca Wallis
Number one place in Mareeba!
Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre volunteers and staff celebrated last week after being voted Mareeba’s number one tourist destination by Trip Advisor users. Pictured are the centre’s longest-standing volunteers Geoff Scurr, Cardie Peters, Mary Thompson and Milena Cek, with the cake made especially to celebrate the achievement. FULL STORY P7.
Evidence has come to light that proves Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) staff knew last September that an error had been made with the rates, despite mayor Joe Paronella claiming council had only recently been made aware of the issue. Proof the finance department knew there was an error six months ago comes amidst claims of a cover-up as ratepayers question how council hierarchy did not also become abreast of the issue. Angry members of the community want pertinent questions answered by staff and councillors such as why they chose not to investigate the mistake last year when it was first brought to their attention. The email dated September 29 clearly shows a member of the Rates and Revenue department acknowledging the error brought to their attention by a member of the public. They wrote back stating: “I take your point and have now passed on your query to Manager of Finance as a consultant was engaged to model the rates.”
The email correspondence is the second known attempt by a ratepayer to bring the errors to the attention of staff at TRC, the first was during the meeting held in October with the Ratepayers Action Group. “No-one from council acknowledged that they knew of the error at that meeting,” said Stephen Raso who was the ratepayer who handed council the spreadsheet explaining the error. “Yet the mayor has indicated repeatedly that they’ve only recently been made aware of the error. There is a sharp contradiction between the evidence and what the mayor is reporting to the public. “It appears to some in the community that there has been a cover-up of these errors. Council’s actions could be construed as either complete neglect and incompetence or concealment of the errors by some at TRC until it could be corrected next year. The mayor has a lot of explaining to do.” The extent of the fall-out from the error is yet to be quantified CONTINUED P3

Midwives to hold forum on maternity care The Women’s Unit at Atherton Hospital is inviting all women and community members interested in the future direction of maternity care in the region to attend a community forum on Wednesday March 14. The forum will focus on the implementation of a Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) model of care following the announcement late last year that the model would be introduced at Atherton. The midwifery group practice model will provide pregnant women with the opportunity to receive one-on-one care from a known midwife from the very first antenatal appointment until four weeks after the mother and baby are discharged from hospital. Women’s Unit Manager Dean Stevens said the MGP model had become popular amongst pregnant women as it was part of a larger movement putting the ‘village’ back around pregnancy. “Women get the chance to get to know the midwife looking after them. There are well researched benefits of providing pregnant women with care from a midwife they are familiar and comfortable with. “All the evidence shows that one-to-one care leads to better outcomes for mothers and their babies. Data shows this model contributes to shorter labours, a lessened need for pain relief, fewer pregnancy complications and improved breastfeeding rates.” Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Executive Director Nursing and Midwifery Denise Patterson said the community forum was an informative session for the community prior to the service commencing later this year. The forum will be held at the Atherton Hotel conference room at 6pm on March 14. RSVP by March 9 on 4091 0233 .
Mareeba dancers’ winning combination By Rebecca Wallis
Mareeba ballroom dancers Jimmy and Margaret Falvo are riding a wave of success on the dance floor after recently winning a major national competition. The 72nd Australian DanceSport Championship was held on December 8-10 2017 in Melbourne and attracts some of the best dancers from around the country. The couple, who met through dancing, won the Masters 2 C Grade Standard Ballroom class and placed second in the Masters 2 C Grade New Vogue class. Winning the class is the culmination of years of hard work for the pair. “We don’t have a regular coach and we’re not sponsored dancers,” said Margaret. “For the last 18 months have trained by ourselves. “ Jimmy and Margaret regularly fly to Brisbane and Melbourne to train with accredited DanceSport Coaches Denise Telfer and Laurie Peterson. “It is through their encouragement and support, that we have achieved our results,” said Margaret. It is the love of the sport that keeps the couple dedicated to their success. Their dream is to dance in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom in the UK. “With ballroom and Latin dancing you can be five or six or you can be 80 and still do it,” said Margaret. “It’s something that everyone can do and we love it.” Friendships, fitness and fun are just some of the reasons the couple love to dance. “You make some wonderful friends,” said Margaret. We get to travel all over the country which is so much fun and it keeps us very fit. “We do a lot of cross training at the gym and dancing itself is fantastic for core fitness.” The couple is looking forward to tackling more major competitions this year, including the biggest on the Far North – the Just Dance Cairns Ballroom Titles which take place in July.
Jimmy and Margaret Falvo met on the dancefloor and have been competing for four years.
Agave trial powers up at MSF Renewable electricity and biofuels made from agave are now one step closer, following kick-off of a groundbreaking trial by MSF Sugar, with support from the Queensland Government. Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick joined Member for Cook Cynthia Lui and MSF Sugar CEO Mike Barry last week to inspect the company’s first crop of over 3,500 agave plants at Arriga. “Commencement of
MSF Sugar’s agave trial is a major milestone in the company’s journey to develop its $60 million biorefinery complex,” Mr Dick said. “Once operational, MSF Sugar’s proposed biorefinery complex will be a world-first initiative that will see the company produce sugar, renewable baseload electricity and ethanol biofuels from one location, using locallygrown sugarcane fibre and potentially agave, a succulent plant native to Mexico and South America.” Mr Dick said the ben-

efits of developing a largescale agave cropping industry in the Far North were significant, for residents and local farmers. “Using both agave and sugarcane fibre as feedstock for the biorefinery and green electricity plant means both facilities can operate all year around rather than just nine months, which overcomes sugarcane’s seasonal nature,” Mr Dick said. “Agave needs little irrigation and grows well in low-grade agricultural land, so the potential future
income diversification opportunities for local farmers are considerable.” Mr Dick said that MSF Sugar has advised that its biorefinery complex was expected to generate 80 construction and farming jobs and a further 50 operational jobs. “Powered by an onsite bagasse and agave fuelled 24 MW Green Power Station, the MSF Sugar combined biorefinery complex is expected to produce 110,000 tonnes of raw sugar, green electricity for the grid and 55 million litres
of ethanol biofuel annually. The Green Power Station will also supply baseload electricity to 28,000 homes, 24 hours per day,” Mr Dick said. Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the project represents a major boost for the region’s economy. “MSF’s project here in Arriga is another step towards achieving the Palaszczuk Government’s vision for a $1 billion sustainable, export-oriented biotechnology and bioproducts sector,” Ms Lui said.
Mr Dick said the project was receiving funding from the Queensland Government’s Biofutures Acceleration Program to conduct a feasibility study which will consider all processes related to farming the new agave crop, making the biomass products (ethanol and electricity) and delivering the end products to market. This builds on funding from the Queensland Government’s Biofutures Commercialisation Program to demonstrate bioethanol production for agave at the pilot scale.

Accusations of a ‘cover-up’ at TRC From P1
but in a statement released on February 23 and in radio interviews throughout the following week, Cr Paronella made it clear that he believed there had been zero budget impact “and less than approximately 1 per cent distributional affects across the whole revenue”. Claims that have angered the ratepayers further who say his comments are misleading and confusing. “The concern is that the mayor appears to be misleading the public with information and statistics based on erroneous data from the TRC finance department. His comments are deliberately designed to give the impression that the error is inconsequential,” said Sandra Curcio. “This should not be about protecting council’s
image. It should be about protecting the ratepayers’ interests. If council adopted the attitude of ‘what is best for the ratepayer’, they would not be in this mess. By trying to save himself and others the mayor is completely neglecting the ratepayers.” Ratepayer Ed Kochi was one of three ratepayers that attended a meeting with the mayor, CEO, councillors and council officers on February 15 where they again brought the error to their attention. He claims that none of the council staff could confidently claim they had any idea of what effect it would have had across the shire. “At the meeting on February 15 we were told that a lengthy and thorough review process was necessary to quantify the extent of these errors. The
CEO Hurriyet Babacan and COO Bob Owen could not provide any details of how many properties were affected or the value of these errors until a detailed review was done” said Mr Kochi. “Yet the very next day, the mayor issued a media release on the TRC website. In his statement he was able to quantify the effects. He advised a ‘0 per cent budget effect’ and “less than approximately 1 per cent distributional affects. What do these statements even mean? 1 per cent of what exactly – properties, rates revenue, the council budget?” “Miraculously overnight the mayor was able to publish information that couldn’t be provided to us the day before. This information cannot be correct as it is based on tainted data from the TRC finance de-
partment.” Tolga farmer Stephen Raso was one of the first to notice the error and says he thinks the budget balanced despite the errors because property owners in categories F and G made up the shortfall. “We do not accept that there is a 1 per cent distributional effect and the council cannot claim a 0 per cent budget effect,” he said. “We accept that the council budget may have balanced, but this is due to a redistribution of the rates charges to other rates categories, which was agreed by all at our meeting. Essentially, ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’. “While a significant number of ratepayers may have received a discount, any shortfall was made up by other categories paying more than they should
have. This was acknowledged by the CEO. “The minimum general rate issue caused shortfalls in categories A, B and M which were largely subsidised by categories F and G being charged up to 90 per cent more than the year before.” As a result of complaints and protests by Category F & G ratepayers last year, council did concede a concession and capped F & G’s rates at a 15 per cent increase. “With every media release and statement published by mayor Paronella, he only further alienates himself from the public and those councillors who wish to have these errors dealt with in the best interest of ratepayers,” said Ed Kochi “The mayor cannot seem to acknowledge the fact that F and G ratepayers
Priors Creek petition presented to council By Rebecca Wallis
Nearly 3,500 signatures were presented to Tablelands Regional Council last week in opposition to plans for Atherton’s Priors Creek. Atherton Lions Club was behind the petition after concerns were raised over council’s idea to sell several allotments of freehold land within the Priors Creek Precinct. Councillors voted back in July 2016 to endorse a draft plan that is expected to feature a mix of trails, gardens and residential, recreational and commercial space and was put to the community for public consultation early last year. Terry Clark from the Atherton Lions Club said there were many people in the community who were unhappy with the current plans for the area and that they had spent three years investigating Priors Creek and the railway yards. “We and our supporters feel strongly that selling of
such valuable assets for financial gain is unethical,” he said. “This land and these allotments belong to the people of the Atherton Tablelands. They must remain as public land for free, open and common use for everyone.” The plan proposes a re-vamp and beatification of the current area in a bid to draw more visitors and locals to the area, but part of the plan is also to create new lots and develop existing lots to be developed for retail/commercial/mixed use. Mr Clark said a large portion of the community disagree with this aspect of the plan. “The plans show that these lots will be offered for sale to developers for private uses, such as residential units, shops and business premises,” he said. “We strongly disagree with this aim.” Mayor Joe Paronella said he welcomed the feedback and said the petition

have footed the bill for these colossal rates bungles. The mayor’s comments have trivialised a very serious and distressing matter for a great many ratepayers – and a great
many more who are yet to learn that they are affected.” Anyone who contacted TRC about the MGR error last year is encouraged to contact The Express.

POP UP SHOP AT WHO’S THAT GIRL would be taken into consideration before any plans are made for the area. “I can confirm that we received a petition this week regarding a request for dedication of the land at Priors Creek for recreational and playgrounds including a botanical garden,” he said. “I acknowledge the comments provided and the feedback will be taken into
consideration along with other feedback received when we undertook extensive community consultation.” Atherton Lions Club members have developed their own alternative plan for the area that retains the subject lots allowing full public use of the whole precinct. Their plan proposes a botanical garden with park, picnic and playground fa-
cilities. “We are ready, with council’s approval, to start building recreational and public facilities in the park,” said Mr Clark. “We suggest that council consider forming an advisory group or steering committee with interested residents and stakeholders from the public along with officers for the life of this major project.”

DIVISION 6 by-election MARCH 17
Focus on rates for Darryl Drury His defeat at the last election is not holding him back and he says he’s ready to go in with “open eyes and ears” ready to represent Division 6. “I don’t feel that the council right now is doing the right thing by the rate payers,” he said. “The rates are ridiculous.” Locally born and bred, Mr Drury has previously worked as a project manager and now a supervisor for a Cairns firm that flies all over the country refurbishing old parks. He is ready to step down from his job and step up into the hot seat as a councillor and says if elected, he would be ensuring there
COUNCIL rates will be top of the agenda for Tolga’s Darryl Drury who is hoping to be elected into council at the by-election on March 17. Tablelanders will be voting to replace Bronwyn Voyce who stepped down from the role in January. Pre-polling is open from March 12 at the council offices on Mabel Street, while on-the-day voting offers two locations, Tolga State School and Walkamin State School. The 62-year-old grandfather has lived at Rangeview for over 25 years and says he is ready for the challenge of being a councillor.
would be more communication with the public. “I want to go in there and gain their trust,” he said. “I will always fight for what is right and I think there should be more affordability for the rates.” Mr Drury is no stranger to council as he has lobbied them for the past nine years to improve the parking situation at Tolga State School. “I feel really passionate about safety for all the kids and grandkids at the school,” he said. “If you don’t speak up and stand up for what you believe, nothing will ever change.”
Darryl Drury, 62, is running for council.
Volunteer ready to step up
Well-known local David McConnell is no stranger to local government having been heavily involved in volunteering and community groups across the Tablelands Regional Council shire for years. The 64-year-old is a long-term resident of Tolga and a self-employed contract vocational educator. His motivation for putting himself forward at the up-coming by-election is to restore stability back to the council. “I’m committed to stabilising the functionality of council,” he said. “And I’d like to get the unity back in the community.”
Mr McConnell has been part of groups such as the Atherton show committee, the Maize Festival, the Tolga Scarecrow Festival and the Tolga Rail steering committee to name just a few and is the former president of the Tolga P&C. He is also a member of the local Rural Fire Brigade. Mr McConnell, a father and grandfather, says he has a passion for the community. “I want to look after the interests of the community,” he said. “I’m committed to the area and because of the instability in the past I thought it would be a good time to step up.”

Josh Wallace, 22, is an experienced Tolga businessman.
‘Visionary’ Josh’s fresh approach Young business owner Josh Wallace, 22, is one of six candidates in the running for Bronwyn Voyce’s old job at Tablelands Regional Council and says his ‘no- nonsense, get-stuffdone’ approach will make him the ideal councillor. At just 22 he is the youngest of the candidates but already has a wealth of experience in business and dealing with local government initiatives and organisations. Calling himself a ‘visionary citizen’ Josh has provided a progressive and positive approach to the community around him.
In 2013 he opened the Cottage Café in Tolga and during his time running the cafe has worked closely with the non-forprofit QITE. In the last six months Josh has enabled 16 job seekers to learn valuable core barista skills. In January this year Josh aided in the opening of the free book exchange ‘Little Library’ at Cottage Cafe, an achievement welcomed by the Tolga community and acknowledged by the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC). It seems becoming involved in politics was written in Josh’s history. His
grandfather Hector (Hec) Wallace was one of the eleven local government councillors who tragically lost their lives in the infamous 1990 Mt Emerald plane crash. “I am passionate about the importance of agriculture, small business and community on the Tablelands,” Josh said. “In my small business I take a ‘no- nonsense, get-stuff-done’ approach, which has worked very effectively at Cottage Café. If elected I would use this approach to get a fair representation of Division 6 at the TRC.”

Kate Yeoman said living outside of Division 6 will not hinder her ability to represent those who reside there. The only female candidate running in the race, Ms Yeoman, who lives in Malanda, is also the only candidate who brings with her a wealth of political experience having worked in Shane Knuth’s office for six years. “Working with farmers has been something I’ve been very passionate about,” she said. “I love listening to people. I can see an opportunity where other people only see an argument.” Ms Yeoman, 51, became Mr Knuth’s Chief of Staff before taking redundancy last year. She says a number of farmers approached her about running in the Tablelands Regional Council by-election on March 17, due to her tenacity and approach to a number of issues that have affected them over the years. “I’ve consistently followed up on a number of issues,” she said. “I’m used to hard work and I’m very fortunate that I have an amiable personality. But I’m just as happy in the boardroom as I am out fishing.”

A community meeting in Cairns this week, due to be attended by Bob Katter and Shane Knuth, will attempt to revive a Tablelands training program for troubled youths. The meeting will be held on Saturday, March 10 at Woree Community Hall in a bid to halt an increase in crime in the Far North. The Petford Rehabilitation Program ran for 25 years with government funding, helping over 4000 troubled children get on the right path and lead a productive and crime-free life. Since the funding dried up nearly 15 years ago, its instigator, Geoff Guest, now 91, has been continuing to help people in need who regularly come to him seeking guidance. Now, Cairns Safe Knights, a volunteer night patrol group, has joined forces with the Petford Wellness Association – the committee behind the rehabilitation program – to try

and instigate a motion to get the centre back up and running. So far it has the backing of Cairns councillors and politicians. It’s a program that Mr Guest says was invaluable to the lives of so many children and could benefit many more still. “We need to stop the cycle of crime in a family happening,” he says. “The whole family goes through the system and we need to help them. I’m not saying let’s give them money, but we need to teach them to prepare food, tend to a garden and make them responsible.” Mr Guest says many others have tried to replicate the Petford centre but none have succeeded because they failed to incorporate all of the aspects that made it so successful. “We need to relocate these youngsters, we need a remote place, where it takes a day to walk away because they will try and run away,” he says. “It takes about six
weeks to get them to settle down – change their diet, acupuncture, phototronic therapy.” Almost revolutionary in his thinking, Mr Guest is adamant that troubled kids are eating the wrong foods and not getting the right vitamins and minerals. He is also convinced that the youths need encouragement and the belief that they can become more than just a statistic. “There’s 30,000 aboriginal university graduates Australia wide and there’s 11,000 in jail,” he says. “We focus on the ones in jail which we’ve got to do something about, yes, but what about the ones that are successful? why aren’t we talking about that more? Why don’t we show these kids what they can become and tell them they can get there?” Although the majority of Mr Guest’s proteges were indigenous, a large section weren’t. He says poverty and crime are rife in all religions and that a wholisitc approach to re-
habilitating them is needed. “It’s no good just locking them up over and over again,” he says. “What good does that do? These kids come from homes where there is abuse and neglect. They don’t know any different. They need guidance to get them on to the right path.” The proposed facility would not be restructured at Petford Farm as it had been in the past but at a more remote location which has been made available south west of Coen, including a suitable airstrip for logistical support. Cairns Safe Knights founder Attila Feher-Holan said juvenile crime was out of control and police are exasperated with repeat offenders stealing cars and breaking into homes, assaulting elderly and stealing their possessions. “It just has to stop before the tourism industry is adversely affected,” Mr Feher-Holan said. “Every day the city gets bad publicity when we read of robberies and stolen cars
being driven dangerously through suburban streets by drivers as young as 13 years old. How long before an innocent bystander is killed? “We have called a public meeting to endorse the tried and proven Petford method and we must give Magistrates the option of sending offenders to the Petford diversion program as they had previously done for more than 20 years with highly successful results.” The Petford Wellness Association has strong community support but no funds to further its aims. “So far the response from the community has been overwhelmingly supportive,” said Mr FeherHolan. “It is important that the community attend the meeting to get this motion put to government. We have to let them know that we want this addressed, not with endless high cost bureaucratic talk-fests and programs, but with a proven model ready to be enacted now.”

Centre voted number one place in Mareeba By Rebecca Wallis
Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre has been voted the best place to visit in Mareeba by tourists on Trip Advisor, an accolade that manager Janet Greenwood says was achieved through team effort. “It is a great tourist attraction for Mareeba,” said Janet to her staff and volunteers last Thursday at a celebratory morning tea. “From the moment we invite our visitors into the centre, the welcome they receive at the front counter, the stories told, the jokes, the community ownership that you all have, it’s all part of the experience. “I wanted to say a big thank you to you all. It’s exciting to be a part of this centre and I hope you all feel the same way.” Mareeba Shire Councillor Mary Graham also attended the event to thank the 48 volunteers and five staff that have worked hard to help the centre become so popular. “I’d like to thank you for all your efforts, because without you guys this place wouldn’t be here,” she said to the volunteers. “We’ve

got the staff but it’s the back-up we get from you guys and it’s absolutely fantastic.” Although operating for around 20 years, the centre has recently undergone
changes such as the introduction of the Mareeba Heritage Coffee House and additional space for more artefacts in the museum. Together with the Visitor Information Centre, a
huge marketing push and a strong focus on customer service, the venue has now received the recognition it deserves. “It’s fairly casual, people don’t need to pay and
they can wander through at their leisure which I think people like,” said Mrs Greenwood. “People want personal experiences, and we’re able to provide that.”

Man charged in Donna Steele murder investigation
Detectives have charged a man with murder following extensive investigations into the death of Cooktown woman Donna
Steele last year. On Friday police attended a home in Mooroobool and took a man into custody. Following an interview,
25-year-old Matthew Ross White was charged with one count each of murder, misconduct with a corpse by interfering and enter
with intent. The young father and former local AFL player appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Sat-
urday morning and has been remanded in custody to reappear in Cairns Magistrates Court on May 2. Detective Inspector
Geoff Marsh has confirmed that the offer of a $250,000 reward for information would not be paid. “No reward has been
sought by any person who has provided evidence or information to the Queensland Police Service,” Inspector Marsh said.
Men’s Shed still waiting for site Members of the Kuranda Men’s Shed are hopeful they will find a site to operate from, after a six year search has so far proven fruitless. Darryl Douglass attended the recent Mareeba Shire Council meeting on
February 21 to try and get approval for a site in Kuranda he said would have been perfect for a shed the group was donated from the army. “They said if we could get it up here, we can have it,” said Mr Douglass. “But the one thing is that
we must have tenure.” Council officers had previously advised the group that the site could not be approved as a suitable location and instead offered alternative options. “It’s been pulled off the table now,” said Nicko
Djeric, acting president of the Kuranda Men’s Shed. “We are desperately looking for something private and there is a possible site in Speewah, but it’s not ideal. “We’ve been struggling with this for six years and
we’re trying every door and they’re all getting closed.” Mr Djeric said there was a “desperate need” for a Men’s Shed in Kuranda. “There are so many blokes who lose their jobs or their partners and then they lock themselves away
which leads to depression and suicide and no one’s talking about it,” he said. The first recruitment drive for the group saw 150 people come forward wanting to become paid-up members which would have made it the largest Men’s
Shed group in Australia. Despite the constant setbacks, Mr Djeric said they were still hopeful that a site would be secured soon. “Having our hopes dashed so many times is hard, but we will keep going,” he said.

Atherton Lions Youth of the Year Atherton Lions Club held their Youth of the Year club level competition recently which ended with a close finish between the three contestants. Lauren Davis and Ga-
briella Cuda from St Stephen’s Catholic College and Hayley Fullgrabe from Atherton State High School were tackled with some touch questions from the panel of judges including
“If you could be any character from a film or book, who would you be?” and “Do you think schools put too much emphasis on aiming for a university level OP score?”
Lauren Davis took out the Public Speaking award and was also the overall winner. She chose Liesel Meminger from The Book Thief as the character from
a book she most admired. She felt that schools did put too much emphasis on university level OP scores. Her prepared speech was on the plight of dairy farmers on the Tablelands.

Drama, comedy, thrillers and action on the big screen
There's another exciting week with two great new movies showing on the Rising Sun screen in Mareeba. First up is the comedy drama LADYBIRD. Telling the story of an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl who comes of age in Sacramento, California and of her journey enjoying her independence. Next is the award winning Oscar nominated crime drama THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI, starring Francis McDormand and Woody Harrelson in a powerful portrayal of a mother's quest to solve her daughter's murder. It has won awards at both the Toronto and Venice film festivals. The historical biographical drama THE POST, the incredible adventure sci-fi thriller, BLACK PANTHER shows one last time this Wednesday and the amazing family action adventure THE GREATEST SHOWMAN shows on Sunday for the final time.
LADYBIRD – Christine "Lady Bird" MacPherson is a high school senior from the "wrong side of the tracks." She longs for adventure, sophistication, and opportunity, but finds none of that in her Sacramento Catholic high school. LADY BIRD follows the title character's senior year in high school, including her first romance, her participation in the school play, and most importantly, her applying for college.
THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI – is a darkly comic drama from Academy Award nominee Martin McDonagh (In Bruges). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes (Academy Award winner Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with
a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson), the town's revered chief of police. When his second-incommand Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.

Women’s Day
Come together to celebrate and unite Tomorrow women in Mareeba and around the world will come together to celebrate International Women’s Day. The Mareeba Business Women’s Club are hosting their annual International Women’s Day event at the Mareeba Leagues Club and everyone is invited to come along and join in the fun and celebrations. Following the UN Woman theme of “Leave No One Behind”, the one hour, action packed event, promises to be inspiring, fun and enjoyable for all. Ladies will have the chance to hear from women in the community as they share their stories and celebrate what it means to be a woman in today’s world, both young and old. The event also includes a light lunch and each person
will receive a ticket into the lucky door prize to be won. Last year more than 40 ladies attended and the club hopes for an even bigger turnout this year. The event will also be a double celebration, as March is the anniversary of the relaunch of the Mareeba Business Women’s Club. The 2017 International Women’s Day event was the new clubs first and they hope to continue the annual celebration in conjunction with the Mareeba Leagues Club each year.
COME AND CELEBRATE: International Women’s Day event Coordinator Jenny Carmichael and Mareeba Business Women’s Club President Stacey Shaw are excited for tomorrow’s celebration.
The one hour event starts at 12.30pm tomorrow, Thursday March 8. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at So Swish at 115 Byrnes St, or by messaging the Mareeba Business Women’s Club Facebook page. Bookings close today, Wednesday March 7, at 5pm.
Meet some of the inspiring and diverse women in our community... Financial Independence for Women What is your relationship with money? This is a question asked by Deanna Percy and Denise Lee Long who are CPAs, financial planners as well as business and tax advisers. Australians ‘living the dream’ are: • Less stressed about money • More likely to seek financial advice • More likely to plan and stick to plans Many assumptions are made in estimating financial wealth at retirement e.g. that you’ll stay in the workforce for 35 years; that you’ll work full time for that period; that you’ll earn average weekly earnings. In reality however, women earn less, retire with less and tend to be less confident with investing. They are generally paid less, work part time and have career breaks to care for children and then parents. Take Claire’s story as an example… At age 25, she earns less than her partner’s rate of pay; Claire then takes a career break to start a family, then juggles her return to work with children and continuing family management; she works part time to undertake further study when the children are more independent but suffers financially after divorce at age 45. Or Sofia’s story, who at age 45 reduces her work hours due to health issues, then looks after elderly parents. Soon after, her husband passes away. Sofia retires with a low superannuation balance and must rely on the age pension from age 65. The impact on many women’s finances is that they have less in super and retire with less. They are often financially more vulnerable after divorce if part time work has interrupted a career path. Women generally retire earlier - sometimes when a spouse retires, sometimes to care for aged parents. Further, life expectancy statistics indicates that women live longer - on average 4 years more than men. Research by ASFA into superannuation account balance by age and gender in October 2017 shows the super gap between women and men is $157,050 to $270,710 which is a difference at retirement of $113,660.
Deanna Percy and Denise Lee Long with accounting associates Lisa Tunnah, Hannah Quigg and Donna C’Ward. Not available but also part of our team of very capable women are Giulie Alderton, Mary Stefanutti and Tracy Mazzer. However there are strategies for taking control of your finances: • Budgeting to save and manage your cashflow • Choosing the right investment options • Boosting your super • Protecting your wealth, family and lifestyle • Consider transition to retirement Many women consider that they have no need to seek advice because their assets or income are too low. This is a wrong assumption. Women are taught to manage their everyday finances and are engaged in general household budgets and financing. But very few are taught about investing at an early age. Some are engaged in investing later in their life, yet the Commonwealth Bank suggests that only just over half of women are engaged in their superannuation. Thinking both short term and long term is important. And a little bit extra can make a big difference. Learn about investing, prepare a budget, check your super, assess your insurance needs. Deanna and Denise say to all women, create an action plan. Seek advice. Plan for dreams as well as the unexpected so that you feel more positive about your financial future.

Supporting #PressforProgress International Women’s Day 2018
Where the day all began
International Women’s Day falls on March 8 every year – this year that is Thursday (tomorrow). The day that brings together global governments, women’s organisations, businesses and charities together has been celebrated since the early 1900’s and it commemorates the movement for women’s rights. The first observance of a Woman’s Day was held in New York on February 28, 1909, called “National Women’s Day”. Inspired in part by the New York event, March 8 was later suggested by the International Women’s Conference in 1910 to become an “International Women’s Day”. The 100 delegates in attendance from 17 countries agreed that an international day should be formed as part of a strategy to promote equal rights for women and women’s suffrage. The following year, it was then celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19, 1911, by more than a million people. Two years later, in 1913, the date of March 8 was made official and it has been celebrated on this day ever since all around the world.

NETTIE O’CONNELL
This busy mum runs not one, but two local businesses. While the first to admit it can be challenging, she wouldn’t have it any other way. Nettie is a Qualified Graphic Designer and Illustrator, who runs Nettie O Design and is the new owner of the What’s On & Where To Go magazine on the Tablelands. “It can be very challenging being a small business owner, but also very rewarding,” said Nettie. “Sometimes there is just not enough hours in the day, but I do love what I do and it genuinely gives me joy working with small businesses and the local communities,” said Nettie. It’s the diversity of clients and a love for being able to work
collaboratively with businesses to help them promote themselves, that drives this entrepreneur. Nettie particularly enjoys working with other women in building up their brands and businesses. The local magazine also allows Nettie to promote our great region. “There’s so much diversity across the region and I want visitors and locals to appreciate what we have on our doorstep. We are very lucky to live here.” The youngest of nine, Nettie grew up in Kairi. She lived and worked abroad for a number of years, before returning to the Tablelands after having kids. A single mum to two soccer crazy boys, Nettie also runs the Kuranda Rangers Football Club.

‘Fitness at its breast’ duo aiming for race MAREEBA locals Susie Alba and Mara Rooks are training for this year’s annual Great Wheelbarrow Race. The dynamic duo “Fitness at its Breast” will run 140km from Chillagoe to Mareeba to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). In 2014, Susie was diagnosed with hormone receptor positive breast cancer
and underwent surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Susie said she feels like she needs to give something back to help others. “I have seen many of my friends diagnosed and treated for this disease and sadly some have lost the battle,” she said. “We want to raise as much money as we can for this organisation which helps so many affected by the disease every year.”
New fence for Car Club in 50th year
Tablelands Competition Car Club celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and with a new fence currently being installed it’s shaping up to be an exciting season. Mara said this will be her fifth race and is looking forward to completing the race as a duo. “Susie and I both like to keep fit, are determined and like setting ourselves new challenges,” she said. “The community spirit
and comradery along the way is amazing and we can’t wait to see everyone as we come into Mareeba on the last day.” “Furthermore we love to help others and why not combine fitness with fundraising and raise funds for such a worthy cause,” Mara added. Race Chair, Councillor Nipper Brown is encouraging teams to get in early and register. “Jump online,
register your team and start training if you haven’t already,” Cr Brown said. “This year marks 15 years since the race began and we can’t wait to bring the gold home in May.” The duo is hosting a fundraiser dinner dance this Friday 9 March 2018 at the Mareeba Soccer Club and all are welcome. The cost is $40. Contact Mara on 0439 673 420 or Susie on 0403 839 291 to book.

Atherton finish minor premiers Atherton were dealt a good hand and played their cards well to finish the season minor premiers in the CFN 1st Grade competition. With 4 teams in the fight for the top 3 positions and all spots relying on last round results, the battle went down to the wire. Resuming the match against Barron River 2-141 after a delayed start Atherton were pushing for some quick runs before making a declaration and giving themselves a chance to pull off an outright win. Gerard Fox wasted no time adding to his 100 to be unbeaten on 121 off 89 balls when the captain’s call came. Fred Pittorino played his part scoring 44 not out, and Atherton closed their innings 2-176. Barron fought hard to deny an outright win, but were eventually bowled out for 105, one run short of Atherton’s 1st innings total. Michael Salerno led the bowlers taking 4 wickets, with Paul Nasser, Seppe Barletta, Luke Parnell and Dan Parnell all pitching in with one. The outright win saw Atherton post enough points to take out the
Cricket Far North minor premiership, although this was not confirmed until all results were made available later in the night. Atherton will now progress to the grand final to be played at Griffiths Park over 4 days 17, 18, 24 & 25 March. With the 1-Day and T20 trophies already in the clubhouse, the triple crown is now a possibility. Result: Atherton 2-176 (G Fox 121*, F Pittorino 44*) Def. U14’s have progressed to the semi-finals and will play Rovers at Endeavour Park on 10 & 11 March from 1 pm for their chance at defending their title. Tatti, Myrteza star as Barras bounce back By Liam Daly
Tyson Tatti and Zayd Myrteza combined to lead the Barras to their first win of the season, notching 20 points apiece in a 53-50 win over Fresh in Round 3 of the Mareeba Basketball Association Men’s competition on Thursday night. Tatti, making his season debut, and 14-year-old Myrteza were the difference for the Barras, who, after losing their first two games, managed to account for the previouslyundefeated Fresh in a seesawing contest. The Barras bolted out to a first quarter lead, but were forced to overcome a five-point deficit in the final period, after Fresh standouts Christy Perkins and Ely Simmons took control in the middle stages. Post-match, Tatti was satisfied with his return outing and a breakthrough team performance. ‘We played well as a team. It’s what we’re trying to do this season, just get out there and do what we have to to get a win,” he said. “It’s only upwards from now. We had two losses to start the season, now we’ve got a win on the board. “We’ll see if we can build on what we did tonight.”
Tatti blows by Turner.
Tatti made sure to share credit with his precocious young co-star, Myrteza, who was clutch down the stretch, scoring nine of the Barras’ last 10 points. “Zayd’s got the great three point shot. He can drive to the basket as well, but he’s got a deadly three point shot – catch and shoot specialist,” said Tatti. Barras captain-coach David Anthony, who led his side’s ultra-physical defence on the night, felt that Tatti’s recruitment would have a positive impact on the team’s season outlook. “Tyson has been a
good player for a number of years. He’s still a little bit rusty, but he’s got that ability to shoot from anywhere on the court,” said Anthony. “He’s plays with a very good defensive base and he’s got an eye for the game. “When he gets back to full fitness and game sense, he’ll be a very valuable edition for us.” Earlier in the evening, u18s contenders Brick Squad were back to their best, running away with a 44-33 win over Jets. Explosive guard Creflo
Morris turned in an eyecatching performance for Brick Squad, handling the ball with security and flair, distributing well and finishing at the rim. Jake Priestly continued his strong early-season form for the Squad, leading the offence while taking on the unenviable task of guarding Jets’ representative star Brandon Osbourne. Ryley Struber made an impressive return from injury for the Brick Squad, offering reliable scoring and intelligent defence.

Mareeba Gladiators jersey auction night
The Mareeba Gladiators rugby league team held their jersey auction night last Friday, March 2, at the Mareeba Leagues Club. Sponsors and supporters were treated to a night of fundraising for the 2018 season with almost $7,000 raised for the club. Club president John
Arcidiacono welcomed sponsors and supporters and set the agenda for the 2018 season as the Gladiators look to go a step further this coming season by not only securing a top four berth, but making a grand final appearance. Club officials are upbeat and the team under
head coach Matt Wakefield is in high spirits as they head into their first trial match this coming Saturday against the Mossman Sharks. The action at Davies Park will kick off at 5.30pm with the reserve grade followed by the A Grade match at 7pm.
It will be a long day for the Gladiators as the team conducts a fund raising jog for the Friends of the Mareeba Hospital Foundation on Saturday morning. The gladiators will assemble at the Mareeba Hospital at 9am and make their way through Byrnes Street where they hope
