BALL SUCCESS: Honey Ali-Allen, Acting Chief Superintendent Brett Schafferius, Senior Constable Aleda Day, Superintendent Rolf Straatemeier and Acting Inspector Mark Stewart.
Police ball had it all GLITZ and glamour combined to raise money for a good cause at Saturday night’s Tablelands Police Ball. Almost 200 people turned out for the Melbourne Cup themed-event, which was held in support of local po-
lice staff battling serious illness. Revellers, such as these officers (pictured), were wined and dined at the Mareeba International Club, taking part in Fashions on the Field, dancing and even race sweeps.
Storm terror Local farms damaged by wild weather By Michael Serenc AT least two Tablelands farmers are counting the cost of damage to their properties after a series of freak storms ripped through the region. Dimbulah farmer Carmine Rantucci could not believe his eyes as a system blowing rain, hail and winds pushing more than 100km/h appeared out of nowhere, cutting through his mango and avocado crop on the afternoon of November 5. “We were re-packing some pumpkins under the
shed. We could see it and hear it but thought it might miss us but then all of a sudden, it was just “bang”,” he said. “It wouldn’t have lasted more than a quarter of an hour. The wind came in, then the rain and hail.” Mr Rantucci said he didn’t feel scared as the storm hit, given he and his family were in relative safety under his packing shed. In addition to damaged fruit, Mr Rantucci said the storm’s hail cut through and damaged dozens of trees, which would now have to recover before
they could bear fruit again. Others were beyond saving, avocado trees ripped from the ground as the storm passed through in just 15 minutes. The second-generation farmer owns one of three properties situated close together along Leafgold Weir Rd with his two brothers Sid and Chris. But he said it was his 65ha farm that copped the brunt of the storm damage, along with a neighbour’s. Mr Rantucci’s wife Lorna said the system was

QITE general manager Jillian Trout said Mr Srhoj would be missed by all the staff, but was thankful for his hard work and effort put in over the last 23 years. Peter Apel has replaced Mr Srhoj as chairman and will work closely with Ms Trout in continuing to provide QITE services to the communities in which they operate across the region.
Help spread Christmas cheer THE Salvation Army is asking Tablelanders to dig deep this Christmas as the organisation launches their annual Christmas Appeal. Salvation Army Atherton Corps Lieutenant Kate Cathcart said she was hoping for another outpouring of generosity the region is known for. “People do it quite tough all year round but at Christmas it is always worse because there’s a lot more need and there’s a lot of expectation to do something special,” she said. “But it’s also that time of year where finances are quite tough, there tends to be less work…It’s a pretty hard month for our community.” Cash donations, non-perishable food and new toys can be dropped off at Atherton’s Salvation Army Red Shield Family Store next to McDonald’s along Silo Rd. The donations will then allow volunteers to make up Christmas hampers to give to those families in
need. “This community’s a very generous one and that does shine through at Christmas time,” Lt Cathcart said. The annual Tablelands Toy Run, now in its 20th year, will be held on November 26, with all donations going straight to the Salvos. “The Highland Restorer’s Club put it on for us and that is a wonderful event which people can either donate financially or with new toys,” Lt Cathcart said. Locals needing assistance this Christmas can make an application for Christmas Cheer at The Salvation Army’s Salvo Connect office at 9 Silo Road between November 20 to December 9. They’re also invited to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Day luncheon which will be held at 12:30pm on Christmas Day. RSVP is needed by December 20.
GOOD CAUSE: Salvation Army Atherton Corps Lieutenant Kate Cathcart is urging locals to get behind this year’s Christmas Appeal.

‘I was in a bit of shock. I just wanted it to stop.’ FROM Page 1 “I was in a bit of shock, I just wanted it to stop,” he said. “We were too busy grabbing furniture that was sliding across the balcony of the house because it came out of nowhere.” Two 1000L chemical containers, known as shuttles, were also picked up and tossed into the air. “I saw them fly off until I lost sight of them and then the shed just let go,” Mr Yelavich said. “My weather station recorded 95 km/h winds.” While that storm lacked any hail, Mr Yelavich said the experience was frightening all the same for his family. “I tried to stay calm but my family was terrified. I had my 84-year-old grandmother here as well. She was very upset,” he said.
“It was bad, especially when I started to see the shed fly apart, that’s when it started to get scary.” Mr Yelavich said he would likely fork out between $30,000 and $40,000 to rebuild his shed, but was grateful only some of his crops on the 25ha property were damaged. “Some of my avocadoes are bruised but not all of them. I’ve still got a crop to pick,” he said. “I don’t want to see this happen to anybody, but I think I came out of it lightly compared to the fellas out at Leafgold Weir Rd .” The storm lasted about 10 minutes – eerily similar to the one that ravaged the Rantucci’s farm the day before. “It was just severe from the word go to when it finished, just like it was a mini-tornado,” Mr Yelavich said. “We’ve been through two cyclones but this storm was definitely stronger.”

Trout backs KUR-World
By Michael Serenc LNP candidate for Barron River Michael Trout has given tacit support to a proposed $640 ecoresort at Myola. “I haven’t been briefed enough on the scale or size of what’s there but certainly a 3.5 star hotel with education and health facilities is a good mix for the Tablelands,” he said. “We have probably the strictest environmental laws in Australia and we need to make sure whatever developments we do are sustainable.” But Mr Trout, who gained pre-selection late last month, said it was important to respect the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process currently being undertaken by the State Government to ensure KUR-World would be viable. The qualified support is consistent with comments Mr Trout made to The Express as Tropical Tablelands Tourism chairman in September, where he said the region needed three to five star hotels to capitalise off a boom in the number of Chinese tourists visiting. Mr Trout said he would be looking to hit the hustings in the Kuranda area to find out what mattered to voters. “My job will be listening to locals on what the issues are and working out what’s possible and what’s not,” he said. “Infrastructure is certainly one of the biggest
issues facing North Queensland.” Mr Trout highlighted his lobbying efforts while in office, with the help of local resident Bob Madden, to get Federal funding for a new mobile phone tower at Speewah that was officially switched on last week. “That was a massive concern, we had quite a few talks up there in regards to no communication. That blackspot through there was just ridiculous,” he said. “People in business today and emergency services will now have mobile service through that area. “They’re the sort of things that I’ll be asking the community about what they need.” Mr Trout said he believed the LNP had learnt its lesson following the Campbell Newman-led government’s defeat in February 2015. “Everyone learns from past experiences… and I wouldn’t be running again if I didn’t think I had something to offer,” he said. Labor Barron River MP Craig Crawford, who defeated Mr Trout at the 2015 State Election, welcomed the challenge. “Michael and I had a good campaign last time, I had no personal issues,” he said. “I think the Palaszczuk Government’s record is clearly there as a government that can achieve results, not only state-wide but locally.”

Mr Crawford said the challenge from Mr Trout would be a “good rematch” for Barron River voters. “They know both of us, they’ve experienced three years under each of us and it will make their decision a lot more informed,” he said. While he wouldn’t be drawn on KUR-World specifically, Mr Crawford said it was inevitable more developers would continue to show interest in the region. “We are going to see more prospective developers, more ideas about investment coming into our area and part of that will include the Kuranda and Koah area, pushing out to Mareeba,” he said. “A lot of those ideas will be based around tourism…We’re going to have to put them through the process.” The LNP is due to hold an Opposition Community Cabinet in Cairns this Sunday, with Opposition leader Tim Nicholls to visit Mareeba the day before.

Construction firm’s safety win
HIGH STANDARD: HEH’s Chris, Mark and Luke Bird are thrilled the company has achieved Federal Safety Accreditation.
MAREEBA construction firm HEH Civil has earned national recognition for their high safety standards after being awarded a top certification. The firm became one of just seven Australian companies to be awarded Federal Safety Accreditation (FSA) following an extensive audit. A FSA is considered the gold standard in Australian Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) and comes after HEH underwent a rigorous, two year audit of its internal management systems that focused on ensuring best practice in WHS. HEH director Chris Bird said the lengthy certification process was worth it, with the company now able to bid
for federally-funded, civil works exceeding $4 million. “We are proud of this endorsement as it is an apt reflection of our safety commitment to both team members and the general public,” he said. HEH currently has depots in both Mareeba and Cairns and is currently working on lane widening and drainage works on both the Kennedy and Bruce highways. Notable, past projects include the Gillies Range stablisation, expansion of Mareeba Landfill Cells, Kennedy Highway overtaking lanes, Bruce Highway lane widening and Mossman to Port Douglas road rehabilitation program.

CONFIDENCE: Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella, pictured here with his fellow councillors, credits the council’s new planning scheme for a rise in the number of building approvals.
MORE than $12 million worth of building approvals have been issued by Tablelands Regional Council so far this financial year. The data, collected in the first quarter, is nearly double the same period a year ago Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella said council issued 80 building approvals and 26 private approvals between July and September 2016 compared to just 60 approvals issued 12 months ago. “With confidence in our new Planning Scheme and growth opportunities in our region, we are see-
ing a significant rise in the number of building approvals processed,” he said. “Our proactive and supportive approach to assist developers is paying off, with our latest figures demonstrating significantly improved positive outcomes.” Council also provides a free pre-lodgement advice service for anyone looking at submitting a development application. The new planning scheme took effect from September 1 and was seven years in the making.

Field Days to come back with a bang ROTARY FNQ Field Days will be back bigger and better than ever next year, with the biennial event stretching out to a bumper three days. Rotary members, exhibitors and sponsors turned out for the event’s official launch at Kerribee Park last Thursday, as organisers gear up for North Queensland’s largest agricultural exhibition next May. About 480 exhibitors will line up at Kerribee Park, showcasing tools, trucks, tractors, tyres, markets and much, much more. Field Days chair Pauline Spackman said the event would run with the theme “Leading the Way”. “We’re just happy to continue getting big crowds and every Field Days I’ve been involved with…we’ve exceeded the previous year’s total,” she said. “It just continues to grow…This puts money back into the economies of Atherton and Mareeba.”
Mrs Spackman said the decision to extend Field Days from two days to three would give exhibitors more chance to showcase their farming products and services to the region. About 50 volunteers from Rotary, Men’s Shed and the FNQ Hospital Foundation will be on hand to help run Field Days. Mrs Spackman said the revellers would be entertained by several activities and spectacles across the three days. “The biggest highlight is the tractor pull. When that starts, the crowd just flocks over to it,” she said. “It’s not just farmers and agricultural people who attend field days, it’s your Average Joe and schools too because there are so many exhibitors that are from such diverse areas.” Mareeba Tyrepower, MSF Sugar and Mareeba Mazda are the major sponsors of Field Days, with all money raised across the three
days going to charity. Tyrepower managing director John Raso and MSF Cane Officer Gary Murphy said the event helped to both promote their businesses while raising money for a good cause. “Sponsoring local events is good for the community,” Mr Murphy said. Mareeba Mazda owner David Mete said his dealership was happy to continue with their long-standing sponsorship of Field Days. “It’s our fourth event as a sponsor. The last couple of Field Days have been very successful,” he said. “I am a Rotarian and I see where the funds are going and what they do for the community.” Rotary FNQ Field Days will be held between May 24 and 26 next year. Entry will be $5 per person with each entrant going into the draw to win a daily prize worth up to $1000.

Small business law welcomed TABLELANDS small businesses will now have better protection against unfair contracts with large companies after the introduction of a new law last week. The Federal law, which came into effect last Friday, aims to help protect small businesses employing less than 20 people from terms that are deemed to be unfair in standard form contracts with larger businesses. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro welcomed the move, saying it would help level the playing field between small and big business. “I think there’s a lot of evidence that shows people who have a lot of power in the market-
place use it to their advantage,” he said. “It’s not just about a free market, it’s about a fair market.” Under the new law, to be administered by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, contract terms presented to a small business may be struck out if they’re considered by a court or tribunal to unfairly benefit one party over the other. Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO) Kate Carnell said the law would give confidence to the small business sector. “When it comes to contract bargaining power,
Advertisement
the scales are tipped in favour of big business, so these laws are certainly a game-changer in this space,” she said. “At the moment we have a situation where smaller players who are doing business with the big guys, usually have no choice but to enter into a standard form contract that has been drawn up with little – if any – input from their end; basically they have to either ‘take it or leave it’.” Terms that could potentially be caught by the new law include: those allowing a big business to unilaterally increase the price of a service with no opt-out option for the small business, automatic rollover terms that renew contracts without the express consent of a small business, a term that
removes the liability of the big business while limiting the rights of the small business and terms that allow the termination of a franchise agreement by a franchisor without cause, and with no recourse for compensation for the franchisee. “Small businesses enter into an average of eight standard contracts a year; alarmingly, almost two thirds of small businesses claim to have experienced contractual terms and conditions they considered to be unfair,” Ms Carnell said. Small business owners who suspect a contract term is unfair can call the ASBFEO on 1300 650 460 or the ACCC on 1300 302 502 for more information.
Messy cash split cleaned up
Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella and Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore are happy to put their cash split stoush behind them.
Authorised by the Queensland Government, Ann St, Brisbane
THE spat over a de-amalgamation cash split between two Tableland councils is officially over after both sides reached settlement last week. Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) provided $1,537,529.62 plus interest in settlement of Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC’s) Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements costs and TRC will provide $1,728,219.81 plus interest in settlement after a court order on May 11. The deal followed a judicial review application by TRC over $5.49 million of the total $52 million in cash reserves split between both councils when MSC de-amalgamated in 2014. Deputy Premier Jackie Trad at-
tempted to resolve the issue in April 2015, splitting the $52 million almost evenly between each council but still including the disputed amount in the $26,053,002 given to MSC. TRC’s judicial review application was dismissed by Cairns Supreme Court in April this year. Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella said the cash settlement was a significant milestone in an otherwise long-running dispute. “From forced amalgamation and then de-amalgamation, the wider region has incurred significant change and disruption over the last decade,” he said. “Reaching agreement on outstanding monies owed by both entities has
been a detailed process and I am satisfied with the end outcome. “We are keen to work together to enhance economic, social and environmental outcomes, particularly with the similarities between our communities.” Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore said he wanted to continue building a “respectful partnership approach for the betterment of both councils”. “It is good to see two of the remaining de-amalgamation issues being resolved, with the only remaining issue being court costs which are being resolved through the court process,” he said.

Over the coming weeks and months Carl Portella, Managing Editor of The Express, will bring you a personal insight into a journey that has only been attempted by a few – a journey into living a healthier life, without the burden of weight. In part one, Carl looks at the lead-up to the decision that would change his life.
IT’S amazing what triggers your emotions when it comes to life changing situations. It was just the usual annual check-up with my local doctor Murray Towne, one of the most caring, astute, well-dressed professionals you will ever meet (I’m sure he won’t mind me saying that). After running some tests, including blood tests, he pointed out that from a health perspective I was not getting any better and generally moving in the wrong direction. In fact, with every year that passed I was adding to the already long list of things that could possibly happen to me and the implications they might have. It’s something that numerous doctors over the years have told me but I never really gave it much thought. This is what happens when we get older and we just have to go through the process until we eventually die. When we’re in our teens and early 20s and even into your 30s, you feel like nothing can hurt you, like you’re oblivious to everything around you. I still remember my late mother telling me to wear shoes because when I got to her age I would probably end up with arthritis. It went straight over my head. “Eat healthy,” she would say, again straight over my head. As a young person we are not interested in how we are going to feel in 30 years, we’re just living in the moment. Living in the moment that is, until eventually you get to that day that you have to do something about it. This was my day! I spoke with Murray at length about my condition and after a while we realised, to no one’s surprise except my own, that it was my weight that was causing the smaller

individual medical conditions that I had. “Damn,” I thought, “He’s going to put me on a diet”. He was aware that my condition was not from a lack of trying to lose weight, but the lifestyle and work ethic of having an office job where there is not much demand placed on your body except your brain. I’m sure people thought, and probably still do think, that I’m a lazy so and so, but I certainly don’t feel that within myself. Nowadays, it’s all about making ends meet and we forget about ourselves and concentrate on other things like entertainment, our homes, going out (or not going out when you marry) and sport, without giving much thought to how things will end up as we enter our twi-

This is not a matter of losing weight for my self-esteem or wanting to look good, it’s a matter of health. To my surprise, Murray raised the idea of doing something extraordinary that was now available to those like myself who struggled with diets and life-long suffering to keep the weight off. It sounded like something from a horror movie when he explained “Gastric Sleeve Surgery”, where they are going to remove two thirds of your stomach through four or five tiny holes in your torso. Murray assured me it wasn’t as bad as it sounded. I was about to find out.

And whatever you do… Don’t dump it! For more information visit www.asbestossafety.gov.au.

Tablelands remembers fallen HUNDREDS of Tablelanders came out to pay their respects to fallen servicemen at Remembrance Day ceremonies last Friday. Atherton, Mareeba and Yungaburra’s Afghanistan Avenue of Honour were just three of several towns in the region which conducted moving but sombre services to commemorate the end of World War One at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Veterans and well-wishers young and old
paused for a minute’s silence as the clock struck 11am, remembering the sacrifices made by Australians in all wars, prefaced by a solemn Last Post and finished with Reville. Avenue of Honour secretary Karina Gibson said a small but compassionate crowd of more than 100 veterans, residents and school children gathered for their ceremony at picturesque Lake Tinaroo. “It was very peaceful,” she said. “It was great to see the community come together to
pay their respects.” The ceremony also featured a Catafalque Party from Townsville’s 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. Yungaburra State School’s Alivia Gannon read the iconic poem “In Flanders Fields”, while Atherton State High student Eva Condullas gave a stirring rendition of the national anthem. “We definitely want to keep involving young people as they play a special role in
the service,” Mrs Gibson said. “People like to see them involved.” Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella spoke passionately in his commemorative address. “I am honoured to be part of the Remembrance Day event commemorating the servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country, those who have or are currently serving in our Defence Forces and our returned soldiers,” he said.

IGA Complex, 135 Byrnes Street, Mareeba A VIBRANT mural depicting the rich history of Mareeba Shire will be officially opened this weekend. The artwork at Mareeba Centre, painted by NQ Signworks co-owner Tom Cosic and AMK Art’s Anne-Maree Keating, began last November and was finished in June. Mareeba Centre co-owner Fred Cristaldi was thrilled with the end result, which primarily showcases the region’s farming, mining, indigenous and wartime history. “Never in our wildest dreams did we expect anything to come out like that,” he said. “The work Tom and Anne-Maree put into it is just absolutely amazing.” Ms Keating, a member of the Kokomuluridgi Tribe whose land the centre is located on, contributed to the indigenous artwork of the mural. Mr Cristaldi said the mural, which wraps around the centre’s walkway towards the rear entrance, also gave shopping centre customers an apprecia-

tion of the shire’s diverse history. “We tried to give a bit of background for people who are new to town or just passing through,” he said, highlighting Mareeba’s long involvement with tobacco. Mr Cosic previously told The Express the mural continually evolved as locals stopped to share with him their own stories of living in Mareeba. “A lot of people made contributions just through bringing up old stories and photos,” he said at the time. “Each part reflects something for all different people living around Mareeba.” Mr Cosic and Ms Keating were joint winners the “Traditional Signcraft Skills/Airbrushing or Handbrushing Murals” category at the Australian Sign and Graphics Awards in September. A small ceremony for the mural will be held at Mareeba Centre this Saturday from 10am, with everyone welcome to come along.

Zennith makes comeback
KURANDA hip-hop/reggae group Zennith is back with a bang after releasing an all new single. Poet A Rhymer combines a catchy reggae beat with some soulful rap and infusions of jazz in what represents a new direction for the band after their last album, Nothing to Lose, in 2010. Zennith songwriter and rapper Astro Brim said he felt it was time to get back on the horse after years spent touring several festivals around the country. “We played at the Island Vibe festival late last month and the response was overwhelming,” he said. “The buzz was really big so that’s exciting for us.” The new single was a natural collaboration between Brim (chorus), his father Willie (guitar riff), brother Aden and MC/percussionist Zami Coleman. In addition to the Brims and Coleman, the band features a plethora of musicians including Josh Stone (guitar), Alec Stirling (bass),

Kapua Gutchen (keys/backing vocals) and drummer Aarron Riley. “The song itself is based on a rhyme, so it’s got that hip-hop/reggae element,” Astro said. “But quite a few of our songs have a mixture of all different genres.” The song was recorded by producer Nigel Pegrum at Pegasus Studios in Cairns and mixed by PaulieB at Tanuki Lounge. Brim said the band’s music was

The LAND Local farmer named ‘Legend’
VISION: Walkamin farmer Dennis Howe was named “Legend of the Year” at the 2016 Australian Farmer of the Year Awards last Thursday. Kennedy MP Bob Katter was thrilled.
Plea to sort out tax
A TABLELANDS farming icon has been recognised for his innovative approach to the industry with two national awards. Walkamin farmer Dennis Howe was named “Legend of the Year” and awarded for “Excellence in Technology” at the 2016 Australian Farmer of the Year Awards last Thursday. Mr Howe said he was surprised and humbled to receive the dual honour after decades spent growing a variety of crops. The father-of-two, who is managing director of Howe Farming, currently farms about five different crops across several properties in the area. That includes 647ha each of bananas and sugar cane, 174ha of avocados, 77ha of coffee and 10ha of blueberries. He employs about 440 staff to manage the operation, with at least 50 per cent of those made up of locals. “We’ve been lucky, we’ve chosen the right crops to grow like avocados and bananas,” Mr Howe said. “Peanuts probably set us on our feet going back 20 years ago. “But you can diversify too much and you’ve got to be careful not to spread your resources too thin.” Mr Howe said he was always looking for ways to innovate and maximise his business’ potential, such as his use of an in-house developed farm management software program, “Farmboy” and a decision to invest in successful co-op MacKay’s Banana Marketing during 2011. “Internet technology has really evolved. We’ve got time clocks on all our farms, we can now enter data in real time. Compared to where we were 10 years ago it’s a huge change,” he said. “We’ve also developed better monitoring of our irrigation systems, but we’re still doing most of the expensive work on the farm the same as it was done 20 years ago.”
MAREEBA Fruit and Vegetables Growers Association president Joe Moro has demanded politicians quit squabbling over the backpacker tax. The tax is now at risk of defaulting to its original 32.5 per cent rate on working holiday makers earning up to $18,200 from the start of next year after the Senate voted against implementing the government’s compromise tax of 19 per cent last week. Instead, Labor moved to amend the tax Bill to 10.5 per cent which the Coalition has baulked at. If the amendment is passed by the Senate, the Bill will then have to be sent back to the House of Representatives for debate.
The continual need for manual labour when it comes to harvesting bananas and avocados means Howe Farming still relies on a large workforce to do the job. “There’s not a lot there you can actually mechanise,” Mr Howe said. “But you can always be innovative by focusing on production and trying to keep your costs as low as possible. It’s a combination of lots of different things.” To assist with banana pickers, Mr Howe has also invented the “Howeser” banana bagging machine, of which 34 have been built since 2008. Mr Howe said while his operation continues to evolve, it was now entering a period of consolidation. “I don’t think we’re going to see the growth over the next 10 years that we’ve seen in the last 10,” he said. “It’ll be steady as she goes, but I’m always looking for newer things and smarter ways of doing things.” Mr Howe said the cost and availability of labour, power prices, a steady water supply and the threat of Panama TR4 disease remained constant challenges for the local agricultural sector. But the second-generation farmer said he still saw a “bright future” for farming on the Tablelands. “Everyone’s got to eat. Agriculture is a pretty good industry,” he said. Howe Farming general manager Kim Mastin, who submitted Mr Howe’s nomination for the Awards, said risk-taking was the main catalyst for the company’s success. “Dennis is very forward-thinking – even though he’s an old fella he’s right up to speed with technology,” she said. “Reflecting on where we are now, it’s because he has taken those risks and diversified when industries were discouraging it.”
Mr Moro said both sides needed to stop playing games before it was too late. “The important thing is the 32.5 per cent tax is gone by January 1,” he said. “This area does not care if its zero to 19 per cent, but there needs to be an outcome.” Mr Moro said the entire Parliament – not the Government or Opposition – would be blamed for a failure to pass a workable backpacker tax. “If this is a political game, they’ll all be blamed,” he said. “There’s a great deal of concern amongst farmers and a great deal of scepticism at the whole of parliament.

A difficult week with both process and mechanical challenges that reduced the overall throughput for the week. A reduction in cane purity resulted in some stock balancing problems at the pan stage most of the week. Late in the week, No. 6 Mill did not appear to be feeding well after a maintenance stop when the pressure feeder chute came out. A bypass chute was installed on the mill to resume crushing again. “We need an outcome and we need it soon.” Under the Coalition’s compromise deal, announced in September, the government would take 95 per cent out of every dollar paid in superannuation to working backpackers. The changes, which would come into effect on January 1, followed a government review of 417 and 462 Visa labour. The age limit on working holiday visa holders would also be increased to 35 years, but there would be a $5 increase to the $55 Passenger Movement Charge (PMC), which is imposed when a person departs Australia.

Ingredients
Method 1. Line a large muffin tin with 8 paper liners and set aside. 2. In a microwave safe bowl or stovetop, combine 1 1/4 cups of chocolate baking chips with 2 tsp of coconut oil and melt together. 3. Divide the melted chocolate evenly amongst the eight cups, scraping down the sides of the paper liners. Refrigerate for around 10 minutes. 4. In two small bowls, add the hazelnut butter in one and the rest of the chocolate baking chips and coconut oil in the other. 5. If your chocolate hazelnut butter/homemade Nutella is too stiff, melt slightly until drippy. Remove slightly chilled chocolate cups and fill the eight cups with a tablespoon of the nutella each and optional crushed hazelnuts. 6. Place back in the refrigerator. 7. While it is chilling again, melt the rest of the chocolate baking chips with a teaspoon of coconut oil and top the eight cup and allow to cool until firm. 8. Top with optional sea salt and enjoy! Note: These make muffin sized cups- Feel free to make into mini muffin sized ones or smaller ones, using all 12 muffin tins available.

Hitting out for a good cause SPORTS-mad Tablelanders are being urged to tee off in a fundraiser for a local hockey team. The North Oz Magic Golf Day will raise money for Atherton’s North Oz Magic hockey team, who are hoping to compete at next April’s World Masters Games in Auckland. Golf Day organiser and team captain Pamela Clearwater said players could expect a tonne of fun at the event, with prizes for best dressed movie character, nearest to the pin, longest drive and much, much more. “It’s going to be a great day with lots of fun,” she said. “There’s going to be a lot prizes with donations from different businesses.” Auctions will also be held to raise funds for the team, including bids for golf cart hire. Ms Clearwater said she was hoping to raise about $5000 for the team, which will help pay for food, accommodation and transport while they were over in Auckland. “It’s a privilege to be able to take a team from here to compete in the World Masters Games,” she said. Held every four years, the Games are open to veteran athletes across several different sports. The Golf Day is open to teams of three players, with a full field of 36 teams hoped for by Ms Clearwater. Entry is $25 per player, which also includes a barbeque lunch. To book, call Pamela Clearwater on 0437 631 307.

WINNING RIDE: Former Mutchilba girl Hazel Shannon in action. PHOTO: The Horse Magazine/HLH Photography
A TABLELANDS rider has jumped her way into victory. Showing others twice her age how it is done, 24-year-old Mutchilba woman Hazel Shannon took out the 2016 Australian International Three Day Event earlier this month in Adelaide. Riding her ex-racehorse Clifford, the young girl from the Far North beat off stiff competition to easily better her seventh place

finish at the same competition last year. It’s a far cry from Shannon’s Pony Club days in the region. Nowadays she is based in NSW with Olympic dressage riders Heath and Rozzie Ryan at their property in NSW since 2009. “She is not a theatrical person,” Heath told Queensland Country Life earlier this year. “She is very quiet, very methodical and works hard.
“She is a real Australian kid. She has worked hard on top of Australian bush skills. She does not try for brilliance; her talent is fantastic but its not talent that does this – its real methodical work.” The victory represents a remarkable comeback for Shannon, who was nearly killed in a riding accident last year while competing in Albury. The Tablelands is home to several talented riders.

EXPRESS sPORT Cricket juniors make rep sides FIVE Mareeba cricket juniors have been chosen for representative teams, in a glowing endorsement of local talent. All rounder Angus Campman (U12 Development), batsman Jett Prien (U14), bowler Jarrod France (U14), bowler Braydon Olufson (U15) and batsman Chris Adams (U16 captain) all made Cricket Far North (CFN) rep teams. The achievement is a double win for France and Adams, who also made school Peninsula squads. The CFN teams will play against their State rivals over December and January, with the U16 side to play in the Bulls Masters Youth Cup in Mackay,
U15 squad to play in the State Championships in Bundaberg, U14 squad to play in Brisbane and U12 development side to play in the Ian Healy Development Cup, also in Brisbane. Mareeba Cricket Club vicepresident Michael France was thrilled with his players’ success. “Chris has been picked for Queensland as a batter as well in previous years and he’s probably one of the best that’s come out of Mareeba,” he said. “We’ve always got about five or six players that get selected each year.” Mr France said Mareeba punched above its weight when it came to producing junior cricket talent.

Culture change for Gators Ride for a good cause
OPTIMISITIC: The newly elected Mareeba Gladiators committee for 2017, including A grade coach Tye Ingebrigtsen (sitting, far left) and president Andrew Foster (second from right).
A PLAYING culture emphasising loyalty and dedication is set to shake up the Mareeba Gladiators next season. New A grade coach Tye Ingebrigtsen plans to set tough and exacting standards on all senior players as the club looks to avoid a repeat of a torrid season in 2016. Speaking to The Express on Sunday after the club’s committee was sworn in, Ingebrigtsen said while he wanted to create an environment where players enjoyed their football, it was important to emphasise commitment was equally important after this season’s struggles with player numbers. “No-one’s guaranteed spots next year and everyone’s going to have to fight hard,” he said. “Player depth is a big thing for me and
I’m looking to build a very strong 25-man squad.” After a dour second last place finish in 2016, Mareeba’s A-grade side is already looking promising for next year, with Ingebrigtsen recruiting former Canberra Raiders U20s halfback George House, former Northern Pride hooker Maddie Oosen, exWaves Tigers back-rower Liam Saumalu and former Auckland Warriors U20s fullback George Edwards. Senior players were given an insight into what would be expected of them at the club’s induction night on Tuesday, with Ingebrigtsen’s biggest challenge trying to get the new-look side to gel. “We’ll probably hit our straps midway through the season, but that’s probably the
hardest thing – getting everyone used to playing with each other,” he said. “I don’t think the club’s put any pressure on me to be successful in my first season. I put a lot of pride in my coaching, so I do want to do well. “We’re taking it step by step.” Ingebrigtsen, 25, is also taking charge of the club’s junior development to ensure strong pathways are maintained through to the senior ranks. Newly re-elected Gladiators president Andrew Foster was optimistic about the season ahead with Ingebrigtsen onboard. “Tye brings energy and professionalism and it’s what he does for a living,” he said. “We’re particularly pleased with his involvement with the juniors too.”
Wheelbarrow race date change Due to a clash of dates for events within the Mareeba Shire, the Great Wheelbarrow Race committee has decided to move the event to the third weekend of May. The 2017 event was originally scheduled for May 12, 13 and 14, but due to it clashing

A FORMER Tolga man is helping to raise awareness about mental health, one pedal at a time. David Edwards is about halfway through a gut-busting 2000km ride from Brisbane to Atherton in a bid to raise money for mental health organisation beyondblue as part of his “Reef Ride”. The 23-year-old who recently competed as a sighted pilot at the Paralympic Games in Rio, is motivated to the ride after losing his mother to suicide in 2014. “Riding from Brisbane to Cairns has for a long time been a dream of mine,” he said on his crowfunding page. “I lost my mother just over two years ago and I didn’t want it to be for nothing, I know she would greatly endorse this fundraising quest because of her love for riding and helping others.” A support vehicle is following Edwards with emergency supplies, spare parts, food and water along his journey, which sees him cover anywhere between 120km and 300km per day. All money raised goes directly to beyondblue. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/RR4bb
