Sports stars of Mareeba High recognised for excellence It was another memorable year for Mareeba State High School in the sporting arena at the 2015 Sports Presentation Night, held last Friday night. The young athletes of Mareeba High are true examples of hard work, excellent personality and pride for both their peers and school. HREE Far Northern councils (Cairns, Mareeba and the Tablelands Regional Council) initially were the subject of an explosive report, which was tabled in state parliament last week. Member for Cairns Rob Pyne delivered the findings of the report, which included an official case study of the TRC – highlighting a list of several alleged accusations and activities undertaken by council personnel (these allegations did not include the MSC). Mr Pyne was presented the TRC case study report findings in Brisbane from two TRC rate-

payers - Lyn O’Connor and Jason Ward - who compiled their findings over several years. Despite the allegations within the report being highly defamatory against several councils and individuals, Mr Pyne was able to freely discuss particular subjects and individuals in the house, through his use of the ‘absolute (parliamentary) privilege’ defamation defence. In essence, this means that any politician who is engaged in parliamentary debate (or referring to tabled reports) within the house can freely say what they like, with a complete defence against being sued. However, once they step outside Parliament House, this right expires. After releasing the documents last Tuesday,

Mr Pyne said he believed the current local government system in Qld ‘was broken’. “Local Government in Queensland is broken,” said Mr Pyne. “There is evidence of widespread misconduct in local governments stored in kitchen drawers and on home computers. “Whistleblowers aren’t currently protected. A judicial inquiry will provide the protections these people need to reveal what they know.” He added: “It’s a funny system where whistleblowers complaints are referred to the Council CEO and people end up without a job. The current system is failing Queenslanders.” Mr Pyne’s opinion was shared by The Serv-

ices Union, who echoed calls for the findings to be officially investigated. TSU secretary Neil Henderson said: “When the former Newman Government amended the Local Government Act, it opened the door to allow councillors to interfere with the decisions council employees make. “Local government employees do not have access to a dedicated bullying jurisdiction, like most Australian workers have under the Fair Work Act. “This is a major deficiency under the current Industrial Relations Act and we are currently considering this issue of which the Palaszczuk Government has initiated.” CONTINUED PAGE 3

AREEBA State High School hosted a memorable ‘Resourcing Women of the North’ function last Thursday morning, in commemoration of International Rural Women’s Day. With an emphasis of celebrating the strengths of rural women across the globe, 60 ladies (sell out crowd) took part in a variety of interactive activities and learnt from notable regional stakeholders. Along with local trailblazer Leanne Kruss (Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association development officer), Birdsvillebased entrepreneur Karen Brook offered her insight into life on the land. “I was keen to come back up (after last year’s event) and do a more ‘hands on’ event and work with some ideas,” Ms Brook said. “Last year, it was more ‘bringing your ideas to life’ and this year I wanted to share a bit more information –

and work with the ideas in the room. “I think we’ve achieved that today as we’ve covered a lot in half a day. From the ‘Quantum Leap’ to setting big worthy goals, which are things you have never done before, but you really want to do.” She added: “The women had the opportunity today to talk about their challenges and problems (on the land) and then ask for help, guidance and ideas from the individual group that they were working with.” Ms Kruss said she was encouraged by the number of high school students who attended the event and shared their concerns with their experienced counterparts. “In my role, I spend a lot of time trying to merge together links between the new generation coming through – our new leaders – and offering them opportunities to be involved amongst us oldies,” she said. “They are then able to see what goes on in rural and regional Qld. Today, we had 10 students that are agri-

cultural science students from MSHS as part of the entire workshop.” Ms Kruss added that an enthusiastic ‘steering committee’ had been implemented, which will go a long way to see the event be-

come an annual mainstay. Both ladies believe that having a resilient attitude growing up on the land has held them in good stead and are proving to be two shining lights for rural women across the state.

Mareeba born 30 year old Mirko Zuvelek (aka ‘Mick’) has Hodgkin Lymphoma, a rare type of cancer that is often referred to as a ‘young person’s’ cancer as it is prevalent in the 15 to 34 year old age group. Each year in Australia, around 550 people are diagnosed with it. Hodgkin Lymphoma got special attention in 2003 when singer Delta Goodrem was diagnosed. Like Delta, Mick was showing common signs of the disease including night sweats, unexplained weight loss and in his case, chronic coughing. In 2012, just three days before he was due to be married, Mick was found to have a tumour in his chest cavity and was later diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. The wedding was postponed (it finally took place a year later) and he and his family immediately focused on his treatment. His daughter, now four, was only two years old at the time. Over the past three years, Mick has been in and out of treatment due to a number of relapses. He is currently being treated at the Townsville Base Hospital with the chemotherapy drug “Brentuximab vedotin” that has only recently been made available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for Hodgkin Lymphoma sufferers. Being one of five children, Mick is fortunate to have two siblings (Katerina and

Denis) that are a blood a match allowing him to recently undergo a stem cell transplant. These sorts of transplants help cancer patients better tolerate and respond to higher doses of chemotherapy. Mick will be in hospital for approximately six weeks and will then spend the next eight months living directly across from the hospital at the Freemasons Leukaemia Village while in recovery. Mick’s eldest sister Nevenka is holding a fundraising dinner “Mick’s Mission” at the Dimbulah Memorial Hall on Saturday, November 14, 2015 to raise his spirits while he is in hospital. The money raised will be a welcome source of support for Mick who hasn’t been able to continue running his small plumbing business due to his illness. Already, the local community has shown enormous generosity but more help is needed to help Mick and his family get through the coming months. A dedicated Facebook page called ‘Mick’s Mission’ is a place where people can learn more about Mick and his story, leave messages of support and are welcome to make a donation. To book at table or seat at ‘Mick’s Mission’ dinner on November 14 in Dimbulah, call Nevenka on 0417 639 306. Tickets are $40 for adults, $20 for kids 5-16 years and kids under five are free. There will be live music and kids entertainment on the night.

End of an era for Dimbulah resident

Outgoing Tablelands Men’s Shed (Dimbulah district) president Dean Thomas.

By Justin Fris DECORATED Dimbulah resident Dean Thomas has officially resigned as President of the Tablelands Men’s Shed (Dimbulah district) last week. Mr Thomas, who has been nothing short of instrumental in ensuring the viability of the Dimbulah facility since its embryonic inception, said he would remain as a member of the shed - but would take a substantial break. “I found that the lack of locals coming in and using the facility made me have to wonder whether it was viable; and whether my time was well spent keeping it going,” he said. “My health was beginning to suffer because I wasn’t sleeping properly. This was due to the stresses of trying to figure out how to keep it running.” “I found it was time to have a break.” Despite an unfortunate end, Mr Thomas had several memorable moments during his tenure. He would work with local stakeholders and regularly interact with ‘work for the dole’ program participants, who would complete some of their hours at the facility.

“I enjoyed getting the shed and getting it built,” he said. “I enjoyed the interaction with quite a few of the guys during the initial stages who were very helpful in getting the shed running – John Farrugia being one of them – his support and effort was equal to mine, if not more. “We always received excellent support from the Mareeba Shire Council, through Councillor ‘Nipper’ Brown and Mayor, Tom Gilmore. “I also enjoyed the idea of what it was going to provide for the community, but it seems to me that the community are not interested.” Upon notification, Cr Brown said he was surprised that Mr Thomas had resigned; and was quick to acknowledge his commitment to the town. “I was very shocked and very surprised,” he said. “Dean’s been the major driving force behind it (of the Dimbulah Men’s Shed). He’s been instrumental in it being so successful.” During his regular correspondence with Dimbulah ratepayers, Cr Brown said he had never received negative feedback about the facility. “They think that it is good for the town because it helps people out,” he said. Mr Thomas believes the positive role a men’s shed can play in a rural community is significant and he hopes the Dimbulah facility will not fold. “It can provide – providing people are prepared to accept it – a friendly and supportive atmosphere for people who find themselves at a loose end; particularly retirees and the unemployed,” he said. “It can be a good place to just go and sit and have a cup of coffee with other likeminded men. It can be an adjunct to the Lions Club. It can assist the Lions – not just the people, but through projects and fundraising. “I sincerely hope it can continue.”

TRC ‘Case Study’ tabled From Page 1

By Friday morning, Deputy Premier (and Local Government Minister) Jackie Trad said that preliminary review of Mr Pyne’s report had been reviewed by her department staff – alleging that some new findings from the TRC case study may potentially be forwarded on to the Qld Crime and Corruption Commission. In a written statement, TRC CEO Ian Church defended his council’s current position, describing Ms O’Connor and Mr Ward as ‘disgruntled residents’. “We believe this is the work of two disgruntled residents who don’t agree with some decisions Council is making,” he said. “They have previously lodged complaints and have had them assessed not only by council officers but also the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, and the Crime and Corruption Commission as being unsubstantiated.” These sentiments were echoed by TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long, who said the TRC would comply and welcome any investigation. “We believe they do not understand the proper processes that apply to local governance,” she said. “We welcome any investigation into our processes and procedures to prove to a wider audience that there is no substance to these allegations. “It is extremely disappointing that Rob Pyne has not shown any transparency with this matter. We have received no contact from the

Member for Cairns regarding the allegations. “Tabling this information which is labelled as confidential into a public arena without seeking any information from those accused is a blatant disregard of honest, open and accountable governance.” Mayor Lee Long added: “The proper process for lodging a complaint regarding local government is through the local council, the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning or the Queensland Ombudsman. “We will not be providing any further comment until we have had an opportunity to review the documentation in detail and seek legal advice.” Ms O’Conner said: “This is not a witch hunt or a cheap shot at any individual mayors or councillors from any particular council. “(The) TRC and our experiences (with the complaints processes form) the bulk of the material tabled because that is the evidence we have available to us. “We have gone through the complaints process with the Director General’s office in 2014 and, by their own admission, it was a failure. “We have been through the complaints process with the CCC and the report from that was not even cut and pasted correctly. This was on top of the fact that the evidence on offer was never looked at. “Since the documents were tabled in parliament, many other people right across the state have come

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad.

forward. There is definitely something very wrong out there in many local governments.” Mr Ward added that he was keen to ‘stop the harm’ and minimise hurt for those impacted. “We make no apology for our part in forcing this matter onto the Palaszczuk Government’s agenda this week with Rob Pyne,” he said. MSC CEO Peter Franks said that the Council had received no correspondence from Mr Pyne on the matter and the report tabled in parliament made no mention of the MSC. He added that if future reports or correspondance did arise, the MSC would fully investigate and comply with them. “This Council runs very smoothly and has really positive corporate culture,” he said. LNP slams Palaszczuk Government’s reliance on Billy Gordon’s support Q.I.T.E. General Manager Jillian Trout (second from right) celebrates the achievement with Tua Alofi, Cathy Burton, Keely Trout and Toni-Anne Shannon.

290 jobs in 100 days

Earlier this year, QITE. instigated a new jobactive contract with the Department of Employment, with a campaign titled “100 jobs in 100 days to help clients into work with local employers. QITE has full time sites in Mareeba, Atherton and Cairns with part-time offices in Innisfail, Ravenshoe, Yarrabah, Mossman and Tully. As a not for profit community based organisation QITE employ over 75 local staff and manage the company from their Mareeba Office. The campaign was to encourage employers to call for any vacancies they had and friendly skilled staff would assist them in finding the right person for the job. The key to the success at QITE is engaging with employers to assist them with identifying opportunities to place job seekers; and to achieve the ultimate goal of making an impact on unemployment in their employment region.

The challenge was as much for QITE staff, as it was for the employers in the communities. Together, they made a huge impact and took measurable steps towards their vision, which is: Meaningful employment for all; adding value to the people we serve, their families and communities. The 100 job target was hit quite early in the campaign and the staff was amazed at their achievement by reaching 290 jobs in 100 days - that’s almost three jobs per day. A fabulous result for local jobseekers across the region. Jobseekers were placed into a lot of different industries, which has left QITE staff immensely proud. The hard work and commitment by QITE staff made this happen and they would like to thank local employers and businesses for their support.

LIBERAL National Party opposition leader Lawrence Springborg has lambasted the Palaszczuk Government’s reliance on the Independent Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, to push through controversial legislation in state parliament. The heat on Mr Gordon’s tenure in the Cook electorate has reached an oppressive-like nature, with alleged inappropriate image correspondences between himself and four women via social media dominating headlines across the state. These accusations have surfaced only weeks after Mr Gordon was officially cleared by police in regard to other alleged matters of an unsavoury nature. Despite being expelled from the ALP earlier in the year – the Palaszczuk Government continues to routinely rely on Mr Gordon’s vote to secure the status quo – especially when the two Katter’s Australia Party crossbenchers side with the LNP. Mr Gordon has faced intensified scrutiny from both politicians and Cape York- based indigenous elders, who believe he should resign. He has remained defiant on the subject, by refusing to resign and briefly addressed the parliament last Tuesday. “Over the last few days, certain statements have been made about me, Mr Gordon said. “I always believed that personal exchanges between me and other parties were private and consensual. “I’m determined to continue to represent the constituents of Cook, and better the lives of indigenous people in my electorate. “This is the only statement I will make on these

Independent Member for Cook Billy Gordon.

matters. Mr Springborg said: “Despite the pattern of concerning behaviour reportedly displayed by the Member for Cook, the Palaszczuk Government has refused to act, Mr Springborg said. “Billy Gordon’s vote is what keeps Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s government in power and she has now made it clear that she will do anything to hold onto it.

Chantelle Petersen and Jennifer Walsh are doing all they can to keep the Mareeba Animal Refuge operating.

By Justin Fris THE Mareeba Animal Refuge (MAR) is in dire financial straits - and the survival equation for staff is brutally simple. If they can’t raise $50,000 over the next 50 days, previous funding will run its course and the facility will be forced to close under its current identity and operation. MAR manager Jennifer Walsh said the facility had received excellent support from the Mareeba Shire Council and they were keen to renew a three year lease in coming months. However with soaring vet bills and overheads eating into the refuge’s finances, previous funding to keep the facility running

CLEALL’S

is almost completely gone. “This is actually council property, she said. “We have an arrangement with the MSC with a lease and our current lease runs out in November (next month). “I want to stress however, that although we have this arrangement with council, we don’t receive any government funding. We are totally dependent on charity and the generosity of the community. Ms Walsh said operation costs for the refuge totals $250,000 per year, with daily upkeep an almost never ending task. “Our biggest outlays are vet bills and wages, she said. “The workload is simply too enormous to rely on volunteers. We cur-

rently have one full-time employee being myself, along with three part time staff. MSC CEO Peter Franks said the MSC had recently undertaken some maintenance upgrades on the facility – and along with the MSC’s support, urged the community to join them in saving the facility. “We really appreciate what they are doing, he said. “We urge the community to get behind the facility. If the refuge is to close, the pets will be unable to re-housed and unfortunately have to be put down. To donate, please visit: https://ozcrowd. com/campaigns/help-save-the-animals-atthe-mareeba-animal-refuge-and-keep-theshelter-running-for-another-year/

The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is now open and accepting donations.

Local schools are getting behind the 2015 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, organising fundraising activities to help boost the annual appeal which helps those less fortunate in the community.

Mareeba couple win car in raffle Leon Trentin (Dealer Principal), Blue Skimmings, Vickie Skimmings, with Judith and Winston Jennings.

MAREEBA couple Judith and Winston Jennings were the lucky recipients of a 2015 Nissan Micra on Wednesday, October 14, in Atherton. In light of the tragedy which impacted Ravenshoe in June (cafe explosion), Ravenshoe residents Vickie and Blue Skimmings were keen to do something to help the survivors. After discussions with Chano (Owner) and Leon Trentin (Dealer Principal – Chano Trentin’s All-Wheel Drive Centre, Atherton), the duo received the donation of the Micra from Mr Trentin for the raffle. Days after being notified of the win, Mrs Jennings said she was still ‘elated’ by the win. She was contacted by Mr Trentin on the Saturday afternoon prior, with Mr and Mrs Jennings receiving the prize the following Wednesday. “I bought the ticket for the raffle – and basically that was that, she said. “I didn’t really give it a second thought, as it is a donation really; and I had plenty of other things going on at the time. “After I initially found out about the win, I thought it was a joke. My husband was actually out at the time and

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

he didn’t find out about it until he came home. Leon Trentin said: “It was something that didn’t take him (Chano) too long to think about. Blue Skimmings was the first point of call (in regard to the raffle) and Chano said: ‘give them a car’. Chano Trentin’s loyalty and representation to Ravenshoe is widely known, therefore there is no surprise of the magnitude of the gesture. Tablelands Regional councillor (Division 2) Shaaron Linwood said she was delighted to see a local couple win the car, along with much needed funds toward the GIVIT Ravenshoe Recovery appeal. “It was a wonderful donation by Chano, she said. “It’s wonderful that they are so supportive and you can always rely on Chano to be helping out when the need is there. It was also really wonderful to see someone local actually win it – and she was so thrilled when she heard. Mrs Jennings added that they would most likely sell the car in the coming months, donating a significant amount of the proceeds to help the survivors impacted by the Ravenshoe tragedy.

In the true spirit of Christmas, Mareeba Shire Council would like to help make the festive season easier for those in need through the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

Please give generously to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal at the Mareeba Shire Council Service Centre, Mareeba or Kuranda ... and help families in need this Christmas! Alternatively, donations can be made by cheque made payable to Mayor’s Christmas Appeal PO Box 154 Mareeba 4880 All donations are tax deductible

Zoe Quintieri, Katrina Kazim, Natasha Burton, Mareeba Rotary President Nina Grant, Helping Hands coordinator Logan Alderson and Milan Quintieri with the hands and cases they helped to make.

School students, parents, teachers and rotarians combined last Wednesday night to build ‘Helping Hands’ to change the lives of amputee landmine victims in Cambodia and throughout the developing world. The annual ‘Mareeba Rotary Student Leadership’ night was also held in conjunction with the ‘Build a Hand’ project, with more than 50 students, parents and teachers from Mareeba State High and Primary, St Thomas’s School, Dimbulah State P-10, Mt Molloy, Biboohra and St Stephens Catholic College schools attending. Organised by Rotarian, Lenore Wyatt, the leadership night was lead by the Dimbulah State P-10 Rotary Interact Club students and followed with speeches from the leaders of each school to update those in attendance on their school and lives. Rotarian and Helping Hands program leader Logan Alderson then broke the large group up into teams to build the hands. Each team built a hand (10 in total) from

scratch, decorated a case with artwork and a personal message for each recipient and then had their photo taken with the hand they built which goes to the landmine victim so they get to see who made them their new hand. The program not only changes the life of an amputee, it more often than not changes the lives of the teams who build the hands and Wednesday night was no exception - with all participants thoroughly enjoying the activity and knowing they were doing something worthwhile for someone in need. Mareeba Rotary President Nina Grant said she was thrilled with the night and it was great to see so many young students getting involved in our community and helping others in need. “Together we created an opportunity for a child or adult to be able to write and eat again and do it with fellow rotarians and our future leaders made even more special.”

Commending MSC’s support I would like to congratulate the Mareeba Shire Council for the decision made on October 7, 2015, to not support the National Heritage listing of Chillagoe’s Karsts. This will send a strong community statement to bureaucracy, the same sentiments have also been strongly represented to the Minister via myself, Warren Entsch, Senator Macdonald and Senator McGrath. The National Heritage List does not ‘protect’ anything – it is just a list saying that something is special. While having the list sounds alright in theory, the problem comes when this list is picked up by laws, such as the EPBC, which then cause extra paperwork and cost with no tangible outcome. The reason there is no tangible outcome is because these Karsts are already ‘protected’ in a National Park or through the Mineral Resources Regulations were they are specifically not allowed to be mined or damaged by mining etc. There is one Karst that had been quarried before all of the regulations came in – so other than that single Karst, the Karsts are safe and in this case the National Heritage Listing does nothing but unreasonably cost money for small businesses that are vital to a small community. The impact of this listing is much wider than our marble mines and Chillagoe, as it flows onto the lime industry and would also increase costs to our agricultural industries. A classic example of nonsensical green tape - where what sounded like a good idea at a Canberra desktop can cause significant harm in the paddock. Well done Mareeba Shire for standing for common sense and our locals. Noeline Ikin, Federal Liberal candidate for Kennedy

Snake bite victim says thanks Two weeks ago, a friend visiting from Narrandera, NSW and I went to the Mareeba wetlands for a walk to look for birds in the area. Not 20 minutes into the walk, my friend, Nella Smith, was bitten on the calf (of her right leg0 by a very large snake. I was the one who actually trod on it and it flared back and bit Nella, who was right behind me. Fortunately for me, another walker came along just as I was heading back to the Wetlands Centre to get help. He had mobile reception and called the centre and help came immediately along with an ambulance about 20 minutes later. After bandaging the area around the bite, Nella was put onto a stretcher and into the wetlands bush-bashing vehicle and taken through the bush to where the ambulance was parked. She was taken to Mareeba Hospital where the staff were prepared for her arrival and immediately went into action. I cannot thank the Wetlands Management, the ambulance rescue team and the emergency staff at Mareeba Hospital for their care and assistance during the early stages of Nella’s ordeal. She was taken by rescue helicopter to Cairns Base Hospital in the early afternoon and the test results indicated she had been bitten twice by a taipan - and a large one at that - from what I recall seeing in the instant when the snake obviously bit her.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Express reserves the right to edit letters

So my heartfelt thanks to all concerned as it was a very frightening experience and one that is still having an effect even after this time. The toxin has affected her optic nerves and she still has double vision, but that is improving. However the leg wound is still causing concern and will obviously take a long time to heal. When she arrived at the Mareeba Hospital, she was unable to open her eyes and although aware of the number of medical staff attending her constantly she has no visual memory of them except for the one nurse by her side all the time testing her blood pressure, heart and alertness for any signs of the toxin causing further complications. To the management at Mareeba wetlands, the ambulance guys who came, the emergency medical staff at Mareeba Hospital, the doctor and flight crew who took her to Cairns by helicopter and the emergency medical staff at Cairns Base Hospital who cared for her for four days until she was released, we cannot thank them enough – they all did an incredibly professional job. With thanks to you all. Max O’Sullivan, Leeton – NSW

Cook’s voice ‘lost’ under Gordon In this present time, I am struggling to find any thought of forward thinking from our local member of Cook and the Qld state government. In fact since February 1, this year, any such projects that would have indeed helped turn around the demise of the economic conditions in the north have been dismantled. Pulled apart to the point where we are once again having to fight for the survival of our areas with critical projects. Projects such as the silt and soil removal from Trinity inlet so that large vessels can come into port. Other projects that were stopped like the expansion into farming at Olivevale Station, the stalling of the road works in Cape York with a behind the door deal done with the land council and the list goes on. However most importantly since February 1, the electorate of Cook has lost a very important voice on the floor of parliament. A voice which equates to a vote on legislation such as keeping the June public holiday so that events important to our area can continue. A vote that will support the expansion of the cairns port, a vote for the Hann highway upgrade and all in all the Cook electorate has lost a voice and a vote that represents the needs and wants of all those in Cook. Have your say in The Express – Email us today! I joined Curves a year ago, I felt doing a bit of exercise would give me a lift coming into Spring. After all I didn’t think my diet was too bad. I attended when I could, fitting in around those around me. But I was in a rut! My Curves coach encouraged me to think about joining the 12 Week Body Challenge. I felt it may help me find ways to beat the burnout I felt was just around the corner. Why not give it a go. Initially the process felt overwhelming, as they say change is not easy. By week 4, I thought I would explode, it was all too hard! By week 5, I was starting to see results, giving me the motivation to keep going.

I realised I didn’t have to make huge life changes just simple and achievable ones, and re-evaluate my self-care with some quality “me time”. I kept going with renewed energy. This change in mindset has brought about some amazing results with the end of week 12 seeing me 5.5kg lighter, 46.5cm smaller and having shed an incredible 6.7% body fat. Amazingly the weight loss was not the most exciting outcome. It has been a holistic personal journey that will have long lasting life effects. Learning to love myself on a daily basis has resulted in me being stronger, fitter and healthier than I have been in many years and enjoying my life in a whole new way.

What’s on at the Rising Sun Cinema There's something for everyone on the Rising Sun screen this week. Matt Damon stars in THE MARTIAN, a dramatic space rescue adventure. Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline are sensational in RICKI AND THE FLASH. STAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON is a totally different musical experience, and an excellent drama/thriller at the same time. What's more, it's based on a true story. Another top notch flic based on a true story is EVEREST, with it's all star cast. This is probably the closest that most people will ever get to the action and the drama of climbing the world's highest mountain. There's stunning visuals, superb music and big time drama.

THE MARTIAN

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON

Review by Louise Keller: Humour is the unexpected bonus of this thrilling space rescue adventure that offers a bit of everything, as it keeps us on edge throughout. The story (adapted by World War Z screenwriter Drew Goddard from Andy Weir's novel) is dense, allowing us to connect not only to Matt Damon's stranded astronaut Mark Watney and feel his predicament, but to those who are pulling out all the stops to bring him home.

EVEREST

A climbing expedition on Mt. Everest is devastated by a severe snow storm. Based on a true story which claimed the life of New Zealand mountaineer Rob Hall and 8 others.

In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels-armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent-stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world's most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today

RICKI AND THE FLASH Ricki (Meryl Streep) is a rock-musician who gave up everything for her dream of rock-and-roll stardom with her band, The Flash. When her daughter Julie (Mamie Gummer) becomes distraught after learning her husband wants a divorce, Ricki returns to Indianapolis to be with her, her former husband (Kevin Kline) and her two sons.

Knuth continues battle MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth continues to maintain his push for a ‘fair go’ for those living on the land. Mr Knuth was left deeply concerned with the Palaszczuk Government last week, with a continual flip flopping on land clearing legislation. With landowners already battling enough with drought, Mr Knuth feels this uncertainty is the last thing they should have to deal with. “Queensland is suffering the worst drought in history, and many landowners are unable to use their water entitlements to grow fodder for starving stock as a result of the government shifting the goal posts for

clearing vital portions of their land,” Mr Knuth said. “Yet there are strict impediments preventing clearing to enable graziers to save their stock – this is beyond a joke. “How can we expect our graziers to survive if we won’t let them do what’s best for their property? He added: “Landowners are hand feeding and their cattle are dying, now they can’t even clear the land that the Government is telling them they can irrigate – what is the good of that? “Our farmers aren’t interested in the bureaucracy, we are interested in the now – saving peoples lively hood and stock.”

Reef regulation fear among farmers A Tolga-based grazier is deeply concerned about a potential reintroduction of reef regulations – and believes this approach is a direct swipe at agricultural producers. Peter Spies – who acknowledges that various reef protection principles are important – said the Palaszczuk Government could be hamstrung by pressure from the Greens. “The re-introduction of Reef Regulations by the State ALP Government has sent a message to producers that they are seen as a problem rather than being part of the solution to the reef,” he said. “Agriculture has again become the whipping boy for the State Government to kick in its attempt to appease radical environmentalists. “The ALP made several com-

mitments to the Greens in return for preferences at the last state election. Now the environmental groups are doing everything in their power to influence political decision making.” He added: “The only thing holding the Government back in their agenda to stop any sort of development for high value agriculture is the numbers in parliament. “But that hasn’t stopped them from finding other ways to make life more difficult for landowners – many who are now crippled by drought. Landowners who they should be helping to build resilience through some irrigated agriculture and diversification in cropping.” Mr Spies said it was important for local graziers to band together and said those in the city need to be

educated more on the topic. “We need to educate our cousins in the cities and south-east on what is required to achieve sustainable food production and security,” he said. “We must advocate to and petition our government representatives, have constructive dialogue with our cousins in the cities and towns, write letters and get our message across in mainstream media and suburban papers, voice our concerns, and get behind our farming organisations and peak industry bodies like Agforce and Canegrowers” He added:“We must not be silent and stand by while our industry becomes more restricted through perverse legislation that achieves little, except curb our ability to manage our businesses.”

A rare find

Not very often do properties like this come onto the market in such a highly sought after location with all the work already done. Located approx. 2km from the Walkamin store and primary school and only 10 minutes’ drive from Atherton or Mareeba is this 2.5 acre lifestyle property. The four bedroom brick home has been beautifully renovated in the past five years. The large open plan living area features floating timber floors and air-conditioning and flows into the dining area and well equipped kitchen with plenty of bench space. A large covered 6m x 8m outdoor entertainment area off the kitchen is perfect for entertaining. The remainder of the home is tiled throughout with blinds, security screens, a family bathroom with floor to ceiling tiles, shower and bathtub and large laundry. There is a separate double garage with store room which could be converted into an office and the kids can play safely in the fenced backyard. A 4 bay shed with power and lean-to/shelter provides shelter to the large horse paddock. A smaller day yard is also set up with a stable and there is a dog run, chook pen and veggie garden. The house is surrounded by established landscaped gardens and fruit trees providing a small income with produce sold in a roadside stall. Water is supplied by a two megalitre water allocation from the channel in front of the house for irrigation and there is a drinkable bore, two pumps and 5000L poly tank. 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sprinkle each side of the chicken cutlet lightly with salt and let stand at room temperature 20 minutes. 2. Combine Mozzarella and Provolone cheese in a bowl, set aside. 3. Whisk together flour and egg until smooth. In a separate shallow dish, toss together Panko bread crumbs, Romano cheese, oregano, lemon zest, garlic powder and 1/4 tsp pepper. 4. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Dredge chicken in egg mixture coating both sides and allowing excess to run off, then immediately transfer to Romano mixture and coat both sides with mixture, while pressing gently to allow crumbs to adhere. 5. Pour olive oil and vegetable oil into a skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Once oil is hot, add chicken cutlets and fry without moving them until bottom is crispy and golden brown and flip. 6. Place cutlets on a baking sheet, sprinkle tops with Mozzaralle cheese mixture and transfer to preheated oven to bake for about 12 minutes. Remove from oven and garnish with lemon slices or wedges, serve warm. Squeeze fresh lemon juice from lemon slices over chicken just before enjoying.

Sam Cater and Adrian Madrid.

MAREEBA Mazda held its BT50 launch last Friday evening, with some very special guests stopping by to meet with locals. Former Queensland ‘State of Origin’ greats Scott Prince and Lote Tuqiri brought the State of Origin shield along on the night, which featured highly in pictures taken by those in attendance. Mareeba Mazda dealer principal David Mete said along with being excited about the release of the BT-50 range, he was de-

lighted that so many of the community could stop by and enjoy themelves. “When a couple of legends come to town, we really want the community to get involved,” he said. “So we’ve gone with this sort of style event where it’s family and everyone is welcome.” The Mareeba Gladiators JRL also ran a sausage sizzle with all proceeds going to the club.

EXPRESS sPORT Toshach shines at U/12 national hockey championships By Justin Fris

SKILLED Atherton field hockey product Abby Toshach recently returned home from Perth, where she joined her U/12 Queensland teammates in achieving a national hockey championship for the state. From a personal level, it was a tournament only few get to live out in reality. Undefeated, with four minutes left in the championship final against NSW, Toshach coolly slotted home the deciding goal. Toshach – who was selected as vice captain - backed up her memorable 16 goal effort during the state championships earlier this year, finishing as the tournament’s highest goal scorer (five goals). Upon arriving in Western Australia, Toshach said she was amazed with the sheer size of the city, which is naturally bigger than Atherton. “When I first arrived in Perth, my first impression was how big the city was,” she said. “ I live in a small town with the population of about 10,000 or more - whereas over there, it was about nearly 2 million. “On arriving at the fields (UWA Sports Park in Mt Claremont) and seeing everyone else from the different states, I was really proud to be there.” She added: “The fields were absolutely amazing. Turf in Qld tends to be very protected and you have to clean your shoes in a water bath to go onto the field. “But in Perth, people could sit around the edge of the field and go and play on it at half time and after the game. “This was the first time I had played on turf and it thought it was the best I had ever played personally and the best I had played with the team.” Qld would draw matches against the hosts (WA) and Tasmania during the round-robin group phase and would go on to defeat every other state on the road to the final. Toshach would start the majority of her matches in defence, with coaching staff keen to give all squad members an opportunity to develop across several different positions.

After a portion of each match, Toshach would move up the field into her favoured striker position and the rest as they say, is history. “I was part of a three player forward line with the intention to enter the attacking D (score zone) as often as possible with a purpose to shoot on entry,” she said. “Also I backed up my team mates by getting rebounds off the goalie’s pads or post.” She added: “The final was a little frustrating. While we were trying to break through their line constantly and at 0-0 with four minutes to go and everyone was desperate to score. “It was raining, but it wasn’t any more physically demanding than a normal game.” Camaraderie within the team appears to be one of the major cornerstones for success, with Toshach adding that training camp played a major role ahead of the championships. “We played each game as it came up and just worked together, she said. “(We) used the skills we’d learned at our training sessions and talked a lot on the field.”

Red Devils claim ‘deadley’ scalp

Clinton Cameron shoots from the free throw line. By Justin Fris

THE Red Devils have taken the pitchforks that were stuck in them a month ago and thrown themselves back into the finals fire. After seemingly floundering in the wrong half of the table, the Devils have found form and defeated top four opposition in their last two starts. Last Thursday night, they defeated the MBA Deadleys, 29-18, in a tight and tense affair. Although it was a low scoring game, there was plenty to take from the match. Both sides entered the court with much enthusiasm and were keen to imprint their dominance against the other. Benches on each side resembled venus flytraps, as each team were keen to ensure the five on the court were fresh. The sheer pace of the match proved to be an initial stumbling block for shooting, with the Devils (4/12) and Deadleys (3/9) not landing several field goal (two point) attempts. Points were at an absolute premium during the second term, with the Devils only sinking two baskets, with the Deadleys only sinking one. Leading 15-11 at the half, Clinton Cameron and Layton Osborne began to get into the groove and effectively broke the game open. Their efforts were coupled by atrocious shooting from the Deadleys,

who put up 2/13 from the field and 0/1 from the beyond the key (three point attempt). Holding a handy lead going into the final quarter, the Red Devils never seriously looked like relinquishing their dominance. The loss by the Deadleys is not catastrophic, but it did leave the crowd questioning whether they can handle big occasions. Juni Bordeos and Chris Sheppard put in impressive performances, which should see them in good stead in the lead up for the finals. In the later fixture, Express continued their mid-season revival, stinging the Stingrays 67-29. Hot Air and the Barras match did not eventuate, with Hot Air forfeiting for the second time this season. The Male A-Grade ladder is as follows: Deadleys 29, Red Devils 27, Hot Air 25 and the Comets round out the top four on 21 points. Out of the four, Express and the Stingrays are on 19 points, with the Barras still rounding out the table on 13 points. The Mareeba Basketball Association will be holding their ‘Top of the North’ association tournament at the end of the month, with everyone welcome to attend. Mareeba Basketball League matches are also held at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall on Walsh Street.

Mareeba Swimming Club’s development squad swimmers.

THE Mareeba Wildcats Swimming Club had a massive weekend, with two huge days of development and fun for local and Far North swimmers. Last Saturday, several talented local junior swimmers from Mareeba attended a special development squad coaching session, where they were provided with guid-

ance in the areas of goal-setting, dietry planning and assistance with managing training recovery. Sunday saw over 300 swimmers from across the Far North converge on the Mareeba Swimming Pool – with the Mossman Meteors a notable inclusion, after a two year hiatus from the regional swimming scene.

Boxing showcase set for Mareeba this weekend By Justin Fris

Saturday evening’s feature bout on a stacked card will see local lad Ashton Cater go toe to toe against fellow

talent Jayden Sinclair. Another one to watch on the night will be fellow Mareeba State High School student Kristie Eyers, who has continued her recent run of good form. Fighters will travel from the likes of Babinda, Cairns, Palm Island, Townsville and Yungaburra for the tournament. Bandits taste defeat in Innisfail By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba Bandits suffered their first loss of the 2015/2016 one day campaign, after being defeated by Innisfail last Sunday afternoon. After restricting the hosts to 4/130 off 30 overs, the Bandits’ top order never really got going. Bandits captain Brendan Payne said that prior to the match the pitch was quite damp - and a perfect opportunity for his bowlers to snare early wickets. Both Payne and Brendan Falvo – who have been in a good run of form – both

cheekily nipped at widish deliveries and found themselves not having to trouble the scorers. Reeling at 5/43 and needing to kickstart some life into their innings, Rowan Foxwell and Ricky Shave began to throw caution to the wind. Foxwell would hold his end of the fightback, and make 47, while Shave again made a promising innings (25) to give his side a chance. The visitors eventually closed on 7/114 after their allotted 30 overs. Mareeba play Tully in Mareeba on Sunday from 1pm at Kerribee Park.
